Program
two houses, a house within a house. each house is for a single occupant. The project was inspired by the separation between public and private in Marrakech. Given that the woman plays a very hidden role in the Islamic culture, I designed a house for an islamic man and an house for an islamic woman. The house of the woman is inside the walls, while the house of the man is the empty space that is delimitated by the walls. The two houses manifest themselves in a way that neither habitant is aware that there is someone living so close. Both houses follow a game of a spiral labyrinth that begins from the streets until they reach the central courtyard, which is the only place where the man and the woman meet.

Intertwining stairs The way the two houses intertwine is like a labyrinth and the central stairs are the architectural manifestation of the idea of the project. Each occupant can choose to enter into the courtyard or go up the stairs to their respective terraces were they only share one moment of view. As they go up the stairs, there is a rhythm of dark, light, dark, light until they reach the top.

urban lab
cincinnati, oh
Program
an urban lab, including residences for artists and families, studio spaces an archive, several galleries, an exhibition hall, and an auditorium, What is an urban lab? This thesis defines the city as a series of interconnected paths, as a network of nodes and arteries. Among its primary characters, the pedestrian is elevated from the streetscape to the bridgescape. The entire site acts as a microcosm of Cincinnati, with its network of bridges serving multiple programs and multiple commuters. The Urban Lab explores through the pedestrian transcursion in the bridgescape a new perspective on the city.
urban lab
The skywalk is a network of bridges, closed and open, that links major retail and business buildings in Cincinnati on their second level. Planned in the 1960’s, the skywalk was never fully finished. The urban lab connects to this system, both at the site and city scale.

watershed observatory riverview park- radford, va
Program
a watershed observatory, including three residences for researchers, a water library, a gallery space, and a rain room. What is a Watershed Observatory? A place where the researches can observe the people’s relationship with water. Observations are not accomplished by sitting, looking, and taking notes. Instead, the researchers observe the people by experiencing the space with them; by incorporating themselves in the progression of the space and by taking part in the programmatic elements.

The progression consists of a circular ramp throughout the whole building. The curves of the ramp never ends, rather continues on the different levels.

Upper level ramp connects the residences with the lookout terrace. The pedestrian entrance ramp branches off into the interior courtyard connecting the upper and ground levels.
Ground level ramp connecting the gallery with the rain room.
Undeground ramp connecting the gallery with the water library.

Water drains from a slit in the roof in between two concrete walls. Openings at the bottom of the wall continue the water flow onto the glass roof of the ramp underground. The water then falls down the wall underground.
block typology study berlin, germany
Program
residential apartments and a public ground level with retail shops and cafes The semester was structured as a study of the Berlin house typology and focus on understanding what a typology entails. This project aims to create different environments through the courtyards that change the relationship between the block type apartment and the courtyard. In order to create different environments there are six distinct courtyards, each defined by a strong character. The character of the courtyard is defined by its relation to the context and a specific architectural element. Scale and form also come into play with each courtyard.

Change in plan- more than one direction There are four types of apartments. Each apartment has a relationship to two or three courtyards, thus to different architectural elements that define the courtyards. The rooms also have a relationship to one or two courtyards. Thus, the room emphasizes the individual element and the common space in apartment focuses on the relationship between the courtyards and the apartment. This offers multiple environments within the same apartment, making each apartment unique. Therefore, changing the linear relationship in plan of the typical block type house.

mixed use building 3rd and 14th st, new york
Program
mixed use five story building. Two living apartments (multi and single family units) and a pediatric dentistry for two practitioners. The organization of the building is a large open atrium with individual units or “boxes where the program takes place. The central atrium is framed by screens coming out of the lateral concrete wall. The language of the screens inside is translated to the outside on the facade.
mixed use building
The use of screens creates an openness and a continuity of space while allowing separation of each individual program. They play with light, view and privacy.

kite lantern installation blacksburg farmer’s market,va
Program
temporary installation for the AIA Blue Ridge biennial design awards exhibit with Aki Ishida architect pllc. As part of a four student team, together we designed, fabricated and set up the installation. The kite lanterns, made out of mulberry rice paper, were hung under the farmer’s market’s timber structure and would sway with the wind. They trapped colored light that shifted from warm to cool tones, responding to the density of people in the space. The sensors also triggered a wood chime sound responding to people’s motion. By integrating digital technology, the installation provided a multi-sensory atmosphere that raised awareness of the natural and human qualities influencing the space.
The installation was completely transformative from day to night. It was left in place for the entire weekend, allowing the town to also enjoy its daytime qualities when the Farmer’s Market was taking place.
