Dear Friends,
Dear Friends,
On behalf of the Council of Churches of the Ozarks and its Board of Directors, let me thank you for your interest in and support of the Council and its many activities. The Council’s mission is to serve the most vulnerable in the Ozarks by showing the love and compassion of Jesus Christ.
Thomas Merton once said of the church, “We are already one; we just think we’re separate.” There are many doctrinal, societal and economic realities that can cause us to “think we’re separate.” Because of this “separate thinking,” the work of the Council of Churches of the Ozarks is more important than ever. Our work is a vital, daily reminder that our one-ness in Christ is indeed God’s desire for us, and this one-ness is often revealed through collaborative service to our neighbors in need.
The past year has set a solid foundation for transition and change at the Council of Churches of the Ozarks. Through this transition, new programs and models are being developed as we move forward to a one-campus concept. By the end of 2013, three agencies will have moved to the Council of Churches campus, which includes Child Care Aware® of Southern Missouri, Child Care Food Program, and Crosslines. Through the agencies of the Council of Churches, community outreach impacts vulnerable children, families, elderly, and people with disabilities throughout the Ozarks. In addition, the Council has been actively engaged in the community’s efforts to end homelessness through Safe to Sleep, and Crosslines has collaborated with the efforts of Care to Learn to end hunger. The common theme of each of these programs is improving lives and the Council is honored to play both leadership and supportive roles as the faith community recognizes its responsibility to be the hands and feet of our Savior. Unfortunately, the needs far exceed the resources available, and the Council constantly strives to be good stewards of the contributions which are received. The Council is so grateful for the strong support from its member churches, the generosity of individual donors, and foundations. The good work accomplished through the strong leadership of its Executive Director, Agency Directors, Central Office Staff, and committed Board members could not be achieved without YOU. Thank you for all that you do to support the Council of Churches of the Ozarks. I pray God’s richest blessings upon you.
The Council of Churches is in the midst of pursuing a vision that would bring our multiple service agencies on to one centrally located campus. This one-campus concept also includes welcoming other anti-poverty agencies onto our campus in order to create an empowerment cycle that can interrupt and even break the downward spiral of generational poverty in our community. Kindred spirits are needed! Your partnership in the work of service, and your participation in God’s vision for our one-ness with God and one another are essential. Thank you for being part of improving the quality of life in the Ozarks in the name of Jesus Christ, as we do together what is best done together.
In Joyful Christian Service,
Mark Struckhoff Executive Director
Sincerely,
Ken McClure Board Chairman

A FOOD PANTRY & SERVICES FOR FAMILIES IN CRISIS More than 8,500 people received Thanksgiving and Christmas assistance in 2012 and 3,500 children received new toys. In 2013, Crosslines is trending to serve more than 50,000 for the year.
PROGRAMS TO ENHANCE SELF IMAGE & CONFIDENCE FOR FOSTER CHILDREN Ambassadors for Children programs continue to grow to touch the lives of abused & neglected children. In 2013, the programs are going beyond Greene County to reach foster children in Christian and Taney Counties. The impact that Ambassadors for Children is making will be realized three-fold in generations to come as fragile lives are put back together so that abused and neglected children can have the choice to create a bright and happy future.
A little girl who entered foster care wearing pull-ups was severely neglected and had been isolated from the rest of her family. She had never been potty trained and was still wearing pull-ups at age 9. We helped her get a bedwetting alarm and additional pull-ups. Now she is not wetting the bed and has been accident free! Her foster parent said she is so proud of herself and it has really helped her self-esteem, especially as she’s getting ready for camping trips this year.
Crosslines added a mobile food pantry (truck) and Saturday distributions to further provide assistance to hungry families. The mobile food pantry distributes food to food insecure families in rural areas of Greene County, low-income housing facilities in Springfield and beginning in October, distribution to Springfield Public Schools will be added. In March 2013 Crosslines made the move from a 4,000 square foot building to a new 24,000 square foot warehouse for those to better provide food assistance to families, ensuring that they don’t have to go hungry. This increased size will give the capability to begin collaborating with additional poverty-focused agencies to better serve low-income families.
The Christmas Program provided 300 foster children gifts for Christmas. Ambassadors for Children works with Caseworkers, volunteers, and donors to provide the specific gifts on the children’s “wish list” and host a gift wrapping party to prepare thousands of gifts for delivery. After opening Christmas presents in his group home, a little boy asked “Who brought these gifts? I didn’t know anyone cared about us.”
QUALITY TRAINING FOR EARLY CHILDHOOD PROFESSIONALS
Southern Region
Child Care Aware® of Southern Missouri was awarded with Quality Assurance – making them one of the nation’s leading Child Care Resource & Referral agencies. Child Care Aware® of Southern Missouri hosted the first “Called to Care for Kids” Conference which brought together Sunday School Teachers, Child Care Providers, VBS Teams, Children’s Ministers, Church volunteers, and community members that support children and families. Over 130 attended the one-day conference which included topics such as bullying, children’s sermon strategies, socialemotional training, and strategies on strengthening families.

PROVIDING ESSENTIAL HOME REPAIRS FOR LOW-INCOME SENIORS CHS provided essential home repairs for low-income seniors in Greene County. Often times, the repairs enable an individual to maintain their independence and continue living in their home. In the last 10 years, Connections Handyman Service has completed more than $800,000 in essential home repairs in the greater Springfield area. Robert found himself unable to fix his home and when the water heater stopped working, his grandkids could no longer visit, and he didn’t have the money to replace it. Connections Handyman Service came to his home and replaced the water heater, fixed the plumbing under the house, replaced the bathroom floor, and repaired the kitchen the sink. Robert is able to stay in his home thanks to the Greene County Senior Citizen’s Fund, Musgrave Foundation, and Realtors Helping People grants.
PROVIDING MEDICALLY-MONITORED Adult Care & DAY HABILITATION Nursing and Social Service staff monitor medical conditions and collaborate with other local professionals responsible for the clients care outside our facility. Socialization, entertainment, and community outings beyond our client’s physical and financial means are also provided. Daybreak is unique in offering door-through-door transportation for clients. “Daybreak provides a necessary service to people with disabilities and the elderly. It allows me to be an advocate for them and to be a voice at the state level. What we do in making sure our community members have the care they need is important to me.” - Terry Cornio, LPN President, MADSA (Missouri Adult Daycare Services Association)
ADVOCATING FOR THE RIGHTS OF NURSING HOME RESIDENTS Ombudsman staff and volunteers advocate on behalf of nursing home residents, often being the last “voice” for these individuals. In addition, the staff and volunteers advocate to the community to build awareness about the long-term care issues. Each Christmas season, nursing home residents are given gifts through the“Secret Santa”program – providing joy and cheer to residents. In July, the reach of the Ombudsman program will include Jasper County (including Joplin). “Words can’t express the gratitude that is felt when such a worthy cause is supported in such a caring and Christian way” - Director of Activities, Christian Health & Rehabilitation
SENIORS LEADING WITH EXPERIENCE THROUGH VOLUNTEERING RSVP helps seniors live longer, healthier, and happier lives by providing meaningful opportunities throughout the community. One area of RSVP that has seen significant growth is the Reading Buddy Program. This program matches volunteers with an elementary child (K-3rd Grade) to help students practice and gain confidence in their reading skills. Often times, the Reading Buddy becomes a mentor and a steady, reliable adult in the child’s life. “I always feel I benefit most from working with a student. It is so rewarding to be greeted with a smile when that student sees you.” - Sequiota Elementary Volunteer
PROVIDING SHELTER FOR HOMELESS WOMEN Safe to Sleep sheltered 346 different women (Oct 2011- Sept 2012) averaging 15-20 ladies per night. This overnight shelter utilizes 76 volunteers and is open seven nights a week. More than 10,000 hours of volunteer time have been donated and 5,539 “bed nights” have been provided for homeless women. Because of a significant increase in the number of homeless women seeking shelter – 130% more this May than last – there is a commensurate increase in expenses for supplies. I am grateful for the opportunity to be involved with CCO because of the unique position it holds in the community. I see it as a ministry to bring the needs of those who are often forgotten or most in need to a greater focus weaving the Church into responsive action together. - Kim Erdel, Board Member

2013 POWER OF TOGETHER
The CCO NETWORK The CCO Network is a means for providing a bridge of communication and mutual support through planned, relationship-centered activities between churches, CCO, and the community. The objective is to build the network with a leader or leaders from each member church, affiliate member, or potential member who serves as a coordinator of news and information flowing from member churches to CCO and the community, and news and information from CCO back to the church.
The Power of Together Challenge is made possible primarily through the generosity of Ozarks area businesses and foundations that come together with the Council of Churches board of directors, individuals and staff to fund the Power of Together Challenge. This year the leadership gifts from the Power of Together Challenge sponsors and donor gifts designated to the area of greatest need of $100 or more will be added together for a total up to $100,000 for the Council of Churches of the Ozarks in 2013. The Power of Together Challenge is part of the Council of Churches Annual Fund Campaign to support the operations of the multiple service agencies that comprise the Council of Churches of the Ozarks.
In this past year, the CCO Network has been the nucleus to help programs, build support, and networking within churches. Here’s what one member has to say about the CCO Network:
“Since becoming a liaison for Holy Trinity, I’ve benefited greatly from interacting with changemakers from other churches and the Council. I’ve been able to bring good ideas and important information back to Holy Trinity from the Council and other churches, and to let others know what’s happening on our end. The many and varied positive things being done in and through our faith communities needs to be encouraged--and communicated.” - Mike DePue - Holy Trinity Church The faith presence, voice, and vision for a shared life together are making the Ozarks a better place to live! The Council of Churches offers unity through service and provides area churches with opportunities for community outreach. Monthly meetings provide insight to red-flag issues in the community such as hunger, homelessness, children, and education, to name a few. The meetings provide a platform for collaboration among area agencies, churches, and businesses to better provide services for the most vulnerable people in the community.
