A message from President Ray Di Pasquale In May 2014, I was very proud to represent the Community College of Rhode Island and confer more than 2,000 associate degrees and certificates for the second year in a row during the commencement ceremony for the Class of 2014. This annual publication, the Career Placement and Graduate Transfer Report, highlights the successes of the members of the Class of ’14 since they crossed that stage. More than 80 percent – 1,610 graduates – responded to a recent survey and we are thrilled to learn that so many of them are doing so well and continuing to change their lives and achieve their dreams. Almost 90 percent of respondents to our survey are employed at least part time, continuing their education or a combination of both. I am proud to work with the highly qualified faculty and staff members who clearly prepared the 2,011 graduates well for the next stage of their lives. As you will see in the following pages, a majority of the respondents are living and working right here in Rhode Island and contributing to the local community and economy. Of these recent alumni, approximately 90 percent are enrolled at Rhode Island educational institutions and more than 80 percent are working part time or full time in the Ocean State. I believe that this report shows that after 50 years, the state’s only community college is continuing to help Rhode Island residents change their lives and achieve their dreams. This level of accomplishment is a great point of pride for me and the entire CCRI community. It is truly remarkable to be a part of our students’ journey as they pursue higher education. I invite you to learn more about the members of the Class of 2014 in this report and join me in recognizing their successes.

The true measure of CCRI’s success ... Aubrey Fletcher There wasn’t much downtime for Aubrey Fletcher of West Warwick after he graduated in 2014 with an associate degree in Computer Programming. In fact, he described the transition from training to employment as a “seamless” one. After diving right into the workforce as an intern with A.T. Cross in Lincoln, he secured a contract as an application developer with Embrace Home Loans in Middletown through Robert Half Staffing. Fletcher said the professors and coursework at CCRI prepared him to excel in the workforce readily. In addition to the skills he acquired, he lauded the attention the program paid to valuable attributes such as interpersonal skills, leadership and organization. “They gave me so many good tools to learn how to deal with people and how to manage,” he said. When his contract with Embrace Home Loans ended in December 2014, he quickly – and proudly – was able to return to his alma mater, where he now works as a programmer/analyst in the Information Technology department. “I like working at CCRI because I can finally give back to the community that gave so much to me,” said Fletcher, who came to CCRI to pursue his dream of a better life for his young family after he was laid off from a retail job. Whereas retail had been unpredictable, lower paying and less fulfilling, Fletcher said that a computing career has been everything he hoped for and more. “It’s awesome, and computer programming is definitely challenging work. You learn something new every day,” he said.
Sandra Lee When Sandra Lee ’14 graduated from CCRI at age 55 with her associate degree in Radiography, she was taking a leap of faith into a great unknown. The Providence resident had enjoyed careers in theater, retail and real estate before she decided to return to school to learn a new way to do what she loves most: helping people. “I’m sitting here with my cup of coffee in my own home, three minutes from my job site at Concentra, all my bills are paid, I love my job and I help people every day I’m at work. I don’t know what else I could ask for,” she said by telephone one summer morning. Lee said that the learning curve for the Radiography program was a steep one, but once she powered through, she felt amply prepared for the tasks in front of her. By July 30, 2014, just a few months after graduation, she had already passed her licensing exams and conducted a successful job search. “I put on my salesgirl shoes and went and knocked on every urgent care door in the state,” she said, adding that the first door she chose is the one she now walks through each day for work. “I think it’s common knowledge in the field that the CCRI Radiography program is a good one. Everybody who graduates from that program has to be well-versed and well-educated. The curriculum and the teachers are just superb; they helped prepare me.” Her work at the Concentra offices in both Providence and Warwick has proven to be a rewarding challenge. Beyond X-ray services, Lee also has been trained for medical assisting and occupational testing. “It’s a great variety, and I just love meeting, talking with and helping the patients,” she said. “I love that I’m making a difference in people’s lives. From the moment I greet them in the waiting room until we say goodbye, my attention is focused solely on them and helping them get what they need.”

The true measure of CCRI’s success ... Betti Worth After only a year at Southern Connecticut State University, CCRI soccer standout and Class of 2014 grad Betti Worth said she feels as though she’s been at the school for years. She credits some of this to the camaraderie of her soccer team; Worth plays midfield for the Owls, and she’s been named captain of next year’s team. But she gives more credit to her time at CCRI. Worth, a native of Bolton, England, said that her two years at CCRI prepared her culturally as well as academically for her experience at SCSU. “The transition was so much easier than I expected it to be,” she said. “I think attending CCRI was the best thing I could have done to prepare. The professors are tough and know how to prepare you; my soccer coach was very big on developing discipline, and told me what to expect physically and mentally at SCSU; and my host families while at CCRI helped me become more used to the American culture.” Thanks to the advising and counseling staff at CCRI, she said, her transfer process was a smooth one, too: she lost no credits in the transition. Initially, Worth had declared a major in business at SCSU, but found through her coursework that she preferred the sports management track with a minor in business management. “I think it’s a perfect major for me,” she said, adding that the hands-on internships required of the major helped connect her with a job at New Haven Parks and Recreation, where she runs camps for area children. “I’m loving the parks and rec experience,” she said. When Worth graduates with her bachelor’s degree, she said she will keep an open mind to whatever opportunities come her way – especially if they allow her to continue her soccer career. In the meantime, she’s continuing to immerse herself in the campus experience, including working two jobs: one selling ads for the newspaper and another doing general administrative work for the International Office. “Opportunities keep coming, and it’s amazing that they keep arriving,” she said. Meeting expectations As the Ocean State’s only community college, CCRI provides affordable open access to higher education at locations throughout the state with the goal of helping Rhode Islanders change their lives and achieve their dreams. Results from a survey conducted six months after they graduated showed that the Class of 2014 continued the trend of recent CCRI graduates being very satisfied with the education they received from the community college. When asked how they would rate the quality of their CCRI education, 97.7 percent of those responding selected either “good,” “very good” or “excellent.” During the survey, the graduates were asked to share information about employment status, including their job title and salary*, as well as whether or not they are continuing their education. The satisfaction of our students, their placement rates in employment and the number of those furthering their education are true measures that CCRI is meeting the expectations of those who choose the community college for their first higher education experience or additional skills training. The 2,011 members of the Class of 2014 students have been well prepared by CCRI faculty for the next stage of their lives. Though most graduates tended to remain in Rhode Island, whether pursuing further education or a career, the CCRI graduates can be found living from coast to coast – making CCRI proud.
* Range and average salaries reported by employed graduates may vary from year to year based on salary levels that may have existed prior to obtaining the degree or certificate.

The chemical industry is one of the strongest industries in the United States and trained technicians in quality control, and research and development laboratories are in short supply. The Chemical Technology program prepares graduates to work in the chemical field as any of the following: chemical research technician, quality control technician, laboratory assistant, chemical production technician, instrument repair or instrument sales technician. The program is structured to develop a fundamental understanding of general, organic and analytical chemistry, with emphasis on laboratory applications and hands-on instrumental analysis. The job placement for program graduates is nearly 100 percent. Previous chemistry experience is not required and there are no prerequisites for entering the program. Core chemistry classes typically meet for one evening and one weekend morning each week for scheduling flexibility. The program provides its graduates with an open-ended career opportunity in science because credits transfer to most colleges and universities as equivalent to the first two years of a traditional chemistry program.

These programs serve both students transferring to a four-year college or professional school and students who wish to pursue a career. They provide hands-on experience in the first two years of higher education, a strong foundation in the humanities and exposure to interdisciplinary study. Visual arts offers studies in both new and traditional media, with a strong base in art history and studio foundations. Digital art, digital photo, graphic design and new media art take place in cutting-edge Mac labs, while courses in drawing, painting, photo, 3D, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking and traditional darkroom photography are held in fully equipped studios. Students graduating with the A.F.A. in Fine Arts are prepared for their junior year at art and design schools. A.F.A. Music students are wellgrounded in four semesters of music theory and aural skills, applied music, and other courses designed to fulfill requirements for transfer. CCRI’s Jazz Studies program, the first collegiate degree program of its kind in the state, has been offered since 1985. The Theatre program offers two tracks: one in performance and another in technical theatre. Students in the theatre program develop skills and creativity in the areas of their specialization and actively participate in the four theatre productions each year. The Art, Music, Jazz Studies and Theatre degree programs enjoy good program and course transfer to colleges in Rhode Island as well as Fine Arts programs throughout the United States.

The Liberal Arts program provides a foundation in the traditional disciplines associated with general education: Humanities, Mathematics and Science, and Social Sciences. Many students who enroll in the Liberal Arts program intend to transfer to a four-year college or university in pursuit of a baccalaureate degree. Since the program offers students many options within the stated requirements, students should plan their course selections after first checking with the transferring institution in order to maximize the transfer of credits. The Liberal Arts program offers students the opportunity to develop a better understanding of oneself, the human experience, and the world-at-large. Students have the opportunity to develop skills that assist one in pursuing a lifelong education; these skills include critical thinking, effective writing, researching and evaluating information. Students who successfully complete this program and/or a Liberal Arts concentration receive an Associate in Arts (A.A.) degree. Students may concentrate in: English, foreign languages or mathematics. The degree in General Studies enables students to demonstrate a broad understanding of the arts and sciences. Graduates should demonstrate effective communication and computational skills and possess the capacity for continued learning and logical reasoning. The program allows students the opportunity to select any instructional credit courses at CCRI for which he or she satisfies the prerequisites. Many courses required in this program are transferable to four-year colleges and universities in pursuit of a baccalaureate degree.
