Look closely at errors in students’ work (formative assessment) to help you reflect and make instructional decisions to suit all students’ needs.

Students may record 14 as 1+4 instead of 10+4 because they see the numbers as digits rather than amounts. Students should use manipulatives to be able to visually recognize why the number 14 has 10 ones and 4 more ones, not just a one and a four.
