Participant Step-‐by-‐Step Instructions:

Activity 1: Create voice recordings and create a fluency digital portfolio Step 1: Important: Clearly state your name at the beginning of each memo. Each person should practice at least 2 reading fluency checks using the selection. The recorder should also time the reader. When finished, count the number of words read. This information can be included in metadata later. Step 2: Create a Smart Playlist that will organize memos in a digital portfolio when synced.* Step 3: In iTunes, click File > New > Smart Playlist Step 4: Make sure to set the “artist” container and type in the student name after the “contains” box.

Step 5: Using the “teacher laptop”, plug in your iPod and sync. The voice memos will be organized under “voice memos”. Step 6: Highlight each memo individually. As soon as you hear the name, you are ready to add metadata. File > get info. Rename “artist” to student name. (no need to re-‐sync) Since “update live” was checked during Smart list creation, the voice memo will automatically populate in that student playlist. You can also copy and paste the reading selection under “lyrics”.

Method #2: Sync all student voice memos • • • •

Memos will populate under the voice memos category View options: select artist and comments View all the voice memos in “list” view; click on each memo and update artist info & comments after they have been tagged, you can delete from this area; it should only contain memos that have not been identified

Highlight each student Smart Playlist Ø Click View > Options Ø Remove all checkmarks except: Artist, Time, & Comments

Organize class folders: Create: new playlist folder, drag and drop each student “smart” playlist into the playlist Example: create a folder for period 1, period 2, small reading group etc.,
