2014 MAY-DEC NEW ADMINISTRATIVE COMPLEX EP FLOPEC, LAS PALMAS, ESMERALDAS. ECUADOR PRELIMINARY AND FINAL PROJECT
In collaboration with José Sáez, Alejandro Soriano, Rubén Bodewig and Jorge Galvañ (Extra Arquitectura). EP Flopec, the Ecuadorian Oil Fleet Companay, had expected an important growth in the next years. The headquarters was in Quito, capital of the country, far from the coast. However just a district office was in Esmeraldas, some departments of the company needed proximity to the port, to vessels and the boats repair shop. It was determined then to assemble all sections of the company in one building in Las Palmas, Esmeraldas. Las Palmas is the part of the city that faces the coastline and the port, by that time it was poorly developed and careless. Taking in account the new project coming Ep Flopec and Municipality decided to make an engagement to renovate and equip this district.
4
The project contained an urban plan of 7HA on the coastline of Esmeraldas, the Ep Flopec Headquarters building, a Kindergarten, a public library, a group of restaurants, a coffe shop and other facilities. To minimize public space occupation we proposed the office building to be a bridge over the main square that rests on two podiums, these hold elevators, emergency exits, hall, the public library and the kindergarten. This strategy allowed us to insure pedestrian connections and permeability with the seacoast. Under this “bridge” a fresh and shaded place is created, what becomes extremely appropriate in this tropical region where temperature and humidity stand high all year long. The coffe shop is placed in front of Ep Flopec office building, in the middle of the square, and its sloped roof works as a walkable terrace and viewpoint. Some weekends, when weather permits, movies are projected on the office building façade and people enjoys the showing sitting on the steps of the roof. Other buildings, facilities and strategies were implemented on the district, for instance: an underground electric installation, a separated drainage system for sewage and rainwater, a complete renovation and urbanization, sand dune fixation on the beach by palm tree replantation, market stralls for fairs, beach cabins and toilets, group of restaurants in front of the sea, etc. All these actions that took place produced a great transformation in Las Palmas. Public space was never enjoyed and lived as it is now, citizens stay later at night, more tourist come, concerts and other events are celebrating frequently there, hotel industry is growing too.

2017 MAY COOLING TOWER
***HONORABLE MENTION*** THE FUTURE OF SHADE 2017 COMPETITION
Cooling Tower is a canopy tent designed to provide a shaded space with natural ventilation to guarantee thermal comfort in hot days. Implantation of Cooling Tower in public space will create an island in the city where one can rest comfortably; a cool place in shade similar to that provided by a big tree. The upper part of the Cooling Tower has darker Sunbrella fabric. During the day solar energy heats the fabric and the air within it, creating an updraft of air inside. This chimney effect will be more intense as the solar radiation increases. Cooling Tower provides shade and ventilation to regulate thermal comfort according to the sun intensity, passively, without spending electricity. Grouping several Cooling Towers can create a larger space sheltered from sun and heat, suitable for public markets, fairs, outdoor celebrations, etc.

***SELECTED PROPOSAL*** OPEN UP! THE FUTURE OF SHADE 2014 COMPETITION Open up! was selected by the jury as a singular proposal and the image of the dome has been used many times in marketing communications and marketing campaigns by Sunbrella. Open up! is a system created to block or regulate the entrance of sunlight into a building. It consists of a holey fabric sheet that acts as an exterior covering where the size of the holes is fully adjustable. The mechanism works like the shutter of a photography camera and allows for an accurate disposition of the blades to guarantee an appropriate lightning and sun protection in the inner space.

Concepts in consideration: - Duality: two sides confronted but still conected, two opposed arguments/ postures that converge on one point. Reconciliation. - Wound / torn: wound or scar as a memory of the past, also an injury that heals. - Reflection of two worlds / realities: Left part of the monument reflects the ground and that means: Past and Present, heritage, culture, history, knowledge and memory, we see ourselves in this scenario. Right part reflects the sky and that means: Future, world of ideas, bright future, plans, projects, wishes. Past-Future attached, knowing the past we walk forward. - Courtain: a thin barrier, a threshold… with an entrance that invites you to pass through, enter the scene, ready to perform, as a metaphor of life. - Material nature and shape: deformed metallic sheet, expressive, lightweight. Reflections, different effects from different points of view. Contrast with traditional and old surrounding architecture. New material and shape, a contemporary approach. An attractor for people, something to touch and look over, to experience. Bright and shiny monument transmits optimism. - Position: monument axis coincide with Zvezda park axis. The monument is the background scenario for ceremonies.

2008-09 PROJECTS 4 - ACADEMIC
SURGERY IN VALL DE GALLINERA ALICANTE, SPAIN
20 BenialĂ and BenissivĂĄ are located in Vall de Gallinera, Alicante. They still have fantastic and well preserved nature, without any trace of an uncontrolled urbanism as it happens on the coast, just 16 km away from there. Population ageing, migration to the city and lower earnings in agriculture are causing these villages to be increasingly isolated and lonely. The project defines a sequence of buildings attached to the road, completely integrated in the landscape features and topography. It is actually a surgery in the valley. Alternative paths to the main road and a lightweight bridge are defined to improve the connection between villages. A large balcony provides a viewpoint to gaze at the valley, a rest area for drivers and an appropriate place for the market. This market might become an attractive point for tourists or costumers from this region. It should be known that Vall de Gallinera produces the best cherries in Spain, but also almonds, oranges and lemons. Below this balcony a parking lot is hidden, it will free the streets from cars. This project proposes an apartment building for students, tourists or researchers to allow them visiting this marvellous valley frequently. The last building is a restaurant with fantastic views to the valley. Other programs can be considered if necessary.
2011 SEP PH LEÓN WORKSHOP
MASTER PLAN GUIDELINES FOR LEÓN, SPAIN DRAWING BOUNDARIES
Bea Brieva, Carlos Cuenca, José Quintanar, José Carlos Fernández, Natalia Matesanz, Olalla Seorans y Juan Socas.
To redefine León city limits it is necessary to understand boundaries between urban and natural ecosystems, between different municipalities, disconnected regions, impassable infrastructures barriers and abandoned or unused plots. Then you realize that new boundaries appear, those associated to mobility, economy, infrastructures, nature, society, etc. These are the most important points to deal with; they constitute the guidelines for a new master plan: - Develop joint operations in dialogue with San Andrés del Rabanedo municipality. - Adhesion of San Andrés to León. - Reactivation of Alfoz rural districts, respecting their identities. It is mandatory to break infrastructures barriers that have been created last years in the south and east. - Annexion of Villaobispo de las Regueras y Navatejera to León. - Use abandoned plots and include equipments or facilities for common use. They must be sensitive landscape interventions keeping in mind surroundings. Connect both sides of “la ronda” by footbridges and underground passages. - Distribution market of organic products in situ and frequent outdoors market for citizens. - Solve problems caused by train infrastructure and provide solutions to empty plots around that constitute an opportunity to reactivation of the district. - Need for a logistics center for product management and distribution with direct connection to the railway. - Presa del Bernesga must preserve its Nord-South axis as a continuous green corridor, designated as not for building. It represents a valuable natural ecosystem contiguous to the metropolis.
