Israel seeks rsurvival .
By Madelon Joyce Rosen Young Israel of Co-op 'City (Y!CC), this community's largest synagogue, may have to cease operations Jn May if it cannot raise money to meet approximately $50-60,000 in debts. According to Synagogue Rabbi Solomon Berl and secretary Edith Levine, Young Israel's fiscal situation worsened considerably as a result of the construction of a new wing two years ago. The new wing was built to "give a shot in the arm to this community," notes Rabbi Berl. But the construction, slated to be completed in three, months, took over a year and a half to finish. During that time, Young Israel paid Riverbay Corporation rent on the property while it was
unable to rent the rooms in order to raise funds. Now the synagogue owes $15,000 in construction fees and contractors have levied liens against YoungIsrael which must be paid within thirty days. "We've been stalling," admits Berl. The synagogue is deeply in debt to several vendors in addition to the construction contractors. The synagogue issued letters two weeks ago to both YICC members and non-members who use· the facility on an irregular basis, asking for money. Members were asked to give a · $200 assessment per family and $100 per single person. According to Berl, during its (ümtinoed OD page 16)
