2012 Class Sessions During their year in Leadership Coeur d’Alene, class members attended a variety of lectures, demonstrations, tours and activities that allowed them to gain a better understanding of our community. The class met one day per month, with each day focused on a different community theme. They discussed a variety of issues with community leaders, participated in team building exercises and were introduced to businesses and organizations in Coeur d’Alene that have been key factors in our area’s history, development and daily life. Members from the Leadership Class of 2011 were in charge of planning each session, taking into consideration their personal experiences in the program. This task allows former classmates to put their skills to work and demonstrate their growth in leadership. At the end of each day, the class conducted a “Best of the Best” discussion, where they looked at the pros and cons throughout the day and provided suggestions for the future. The comments from each day were collected and used at the Class Retreat to help plan the 2012 Leadership program. The following provide a summary of each day through Leadership 2012. The Leadership Committee thanks all of the community members who have supported the Leadership program throughout the years and have made this experience possible for hundreds of future leaders.

Robert Singletary then gave a lecture about the history of Coeur d’Alene with a slide show featuring photos from the past of our area. We boarded the bus and started the driving tour of the city with Mr. Singletary after his lecture was complete. He showed us many historical buildings and sites. After the driving tour, we headed to The Clark House on Hayden Lake where we had a delicious lunch before a tour of the House. Hearing the story about the interesting history at the Clark House was fascinating and enjoyed by everyone. After lunch, we had another speaker, Mr. Reed, who spoke further about the rich history in our area. Before the end of the day we voted for our Leadership positions and set up a meeting to brainstorm our “Dirty Dozen”.”

“The morning began with the class having their blood drawn by the great staff at Kootenai Health. Everyone had gone through and had their cholesterol/lipid test done and was now sitting down for breakfast when we realized our Tail Twister, Jumpin’ JP, was not present. After arriving late to class and letting us know that he doesn’t know how to operate his phone alarm the day got started. Later JP would make up for this mishap by volunteering for a heart screening (see pictures!). Up first was Jon Ness, Kootenai Health CEO, speaking about local and national health care issues and giving a history on Kootenai Health. Next, was Dr. Richard McLandress talking about the ethics of medicine. After, Dr. McLandress was given an award from the Leadership Board for his involvement in the Leadership Health Care day for the past 20+ years. The day continued with a panel discussion on health issues and was followed by a tour of the Kootenai Health Heart Center, Emergency Department and Radiology, MRI and CT Scan departments. During lunch we reviewed our cholesterol/lipid test results and then heard from John Bronsell, Pharm.D on prescription drugs and Dr. James Robson on the state of dentistry and its correlation with overall health. The class then traveled to the Kootenai Cancer Center in Post Falls where we heard from a panel about alternative medicine. The day ended with a tour of the Cancer Center and the class going over the Best of the Best. Packed day full of great speakers, presentations and information!” 4
