Downer helps competitors get on their bikes
In early July Garry Itzstein, EGM Services, set off in a group with five other fathers and their sons to hike the Kokoda trail in Papua New Guinea.
The first stages of construction at the site of the new asphalt plant in Gympie, Queensland.
Construction of new asphalt plants underway in Queensland
INSIDE
South East Queensland is Australia’s fastest growing metropolitan region with its population expected to increase by up to 85 per cent over the next 20 years. This rapid growth will impose significant pressures on infrastructure, the economy and environment.
3 4 9 11
To support the projected business growth in the region, the North East Road Infrastructure management team led by Mark Mackay (EGM Road Infrastructure NE), alongside Jeff Bowser (GM Queensland), Clive Freeman (Business Support Manager) and Nathan Arousi (Project Manager) have taken the initiative to erect two new asphalt plants, one on the Sunshine Coast and the other in Gympie. This will allow Downer to remain competitive and increase market share throughout the region.

On the Sunshine Coast, a new European designed Ammann asphalt plant will be constructed, providing Downer with a stateof-the-art manufacturing facility. The plant will incorporate energy efficient technologies and supports
Downer’s commitment to Zero Harm and environmental sustainability. The new 240 tonne per hour plant will replace an existing 30 year old plant, and will be supplied and erected by Ammann who specialise in asphalt mixing plants. Ammann has partnered with Downer to deliver plants operating in Archerfield (QLD) and Hume (ACT). The second plant will be erected in Gympie where Downer previously operated an asphalt plant. D&G Machinery from China will have been awarded a supply only contract for the new 120 tonne per hour plant, providing a cost effective solution for a regional plant location. Due to the nature of the contract with D&G, support from throughout the business has been required
for logistics, importation, customs clearance and overall quality inspection procedures. This has enabled the overall procurement costs to be reduced against a conventional type contract.
Garry and his son Tyler began the 96 kilometre trek from Owers Corner in Central Province, located 50 kilometres east of Port Moresby. The adventure took the group through the isolated and mountainous tropical jungle terrain that is only passable on foot. The famous trail retraces the route that the Australian and Japanese armies took during World War II in 1942.
The group of 12 arrived at the village of Kokoda in Oro Province and completed the trek in eight days which reaches a height of 2,190 metres as it passes around the peak of Mount Bellamy. After such an arduous journey only minor first aid treatments were required. However all of the fathers came home some five kilograms lighter!
Led by an ex-Australian SAS military officer, everyone gained insight into the military history of the area, the hardships endured by both armies and of the local Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels, who assisted the Australians during battle by carrying the wounded soldiers to safety.
“This has been one of the most satisfying and, in a strange way, enjoyable experiences of my life that I can highly recommend to anyone,” said Garry.
On day three of the trek, Tyler celebrated his 19th birthday making the trip even more memorable.
“Never in those 38 years have I met a man so dedicated to ensure the Riverland Community can watch and enjoy in safety and the 230+ riders can race within safe road conditions set up by Trevor and the Downer team. The professionalism shown by Trevor and his crew do credit to the Tour Down Under Road Team” wrote Mr Skinner in a letter of thanks.
Construction work on both sites has commenced in preparation for the arrival of the plants in October 2012.

Trevor’s desire to give back to the community as part of these long term contracts has seen Downer become an integral part of community events in the Adelaide area including the high profile annual cycling Tour of Riverland which closely follows the successful international Tour Down Under. The event attracts participants from all over Australia. Tim Whetstone MP the Member for Chaffey, David Beaton the Berri Barmera Council CEO and the vice president of the local cycling club, Barry Skinner OAM have all showered Trevor with praise for Downer’s support of the event.
“The Gympie model will provide Downer with low cost entry manufacturing capabilities in rural areas where annual volumes are often low but as a group we need to maintain a presence” Jeff Bowser said.

Please clean up your email in preparation for the new Group-wide email and calendar system We are now ramping up the roll out of Downer’s new email and calendar environment. This move is a key initiative of Program Connect which is moving us from a complex web of disparate email environments into a single, robust environment. Now all email users will have the same email address format for consistency, simplicity and to project our unified brand to the marketplace. Your new email address will be “firstname.lastname@downergroup.com”. We plan to roll out to groups across Downer Infrastructure (Works and Engineering – Australia) and Corporate from late August through to the end of October. Other divisions will follow after this. Users will not experience any outage during the migration and full support will be available at all times. Please check the size of your mail box and take steps to clean and reduce it in preparation for the new email solution. Click here for hints and tips on how to reduce your mail box.
Seven ‘Tough Blokes’ and three ‘Tough Chicks’ braved the cold and rain on Sunday 1 July to compete in this year’s Sydney Tough Bloke Challenge. Open to both men and women, the Downer ‘Tough Ten’ braved 20 hair-raising obstacles over a six kilometre cross-country course laden with thick mud-pits and ice-cold water crossings. The team crawled through mud trenches covered with barbed
wire, climbed through damp, dark concrete tunnels and pulled their own body weight across the ultimate obstacle, aptly named ‘Hell’s Gate’the provider of rope burns and bruising for all!

NZ lT Team update The NZ IT team has recently completed its move to the Amelia Earhart office. On arrival at the office, staff were presented with a welcome pack containing an introduction letter to the new area with important information like where to get a good coffee and the best places for shopping and lunch, free coffee cards, chocolate and stationary. The pack also included small office plants for each staff member, these are now in various states of dehydration and bets are out on whose plant will last the longest!
To conclude the move, a team building event was organised including go-karting followed by lunch. Congratulations to Peter Thompson for winning the Michael Schumacher award, Lee Smith for the Directionally Challenged award, Craig Liddell for winning both the
Sunday Driver and Fastest Team award, and Carol Thompson for the Snail Driver award. We now know who to avoid in the car parks. All in all a great day and fantastic to see almost the whole team participating and having fun!

There are more than 7.1 million children aged between three and five years in Pakistan. Less than five million of these children will complete primary school and only half will grow up to be literate adults.
Our Playschemes provide early learning activities, games, education and parenting support for disadvantaged families and children under the age of six in more than 80 urban, regional and remote communities across Australia. Operating for more than 30 years, the program opened new sites this year in Greater Shepparton, Victoria and Kununurra, Western Australia, and extended to families

in Villawood Immigration Detention Centre in Sydney. In 2012, a Playscheme will commence in south-east Perth. Working with Maari Ma Community Health and other groups in Wilcannia, New South Wales, our Playscheme is supporting families and preparing children for school. The staff of eight local women, the majority of whom are Aboriginal, have reported that parents are feeling more comfortable with structured play and learning, essential
for the transition into kindergarten. Also in New South Wales, our Glebe Pathways Project reaches marginalised young people through community-based learning after they have experienced difficulties at school and with the law. The program saw all eight Year 10 students graduate with their school certificates. Many have taken on further education or employment – achievements that all students, staff and supporters can be proud of.

Kirsty and Seth’s story, Australia Two years ago, Kirsty received her child, Seth, back from foster care. She had limited parenting skills and was struggling to cope with two-year-old Seth. After being absent during his early years, Seth was difficult, displaying anger and violence towards Kirsty and others. Kirsty would yell when Seth acted up and, following her example, Seth would yell back. But, by attending our Playscheme, mother and child formed a more positive connection. Staff worked with Kirsty to establish a routine for her children that would prepare them for kinder and school. They helped her enforce “time-outs” and built her confidence as a parent. Through group activities with other children and families, Seth was introduced to sharing, taking turns and listening. Now aged four, Seth is much happier and more settled. He listens to his mother and can be reasoned with when things are calmly explained. Initially, attending kinder one day a week was difficult for Seth. But dropping back to half-days and returning to our Playscheme for a while helped him transition. Seth is now thriving at kinder.

Sally Roberts, Partnership Coordinator at Save the Children Australia, led a team of 21 wonderful volunteers on a charity challenge through Nepal. She tells us about the amazing experience and how the volunteers’ fundraising efforts will help children improve their health and education. Well, we did it. 21 volunteers, 41 sherpas, porters and Save the Children staff trekking the stunning Annapurna Ranges, visiting Save the Children health programs, bussing and hiking into a very remote village, and working alongside the local community to build a school for their children. What an incredible experience. With participants ranging from 15 to 65 years of age, hailing from Tasmania to Queensland, nurses to carpenters, our volunteers were

Trekking for kids certainly a varied bunch! They had earned their place on the trip by fundraising thousands of dollars each for our programs. The first part of our trip involved scenic trekking. But on Day Five, we woke up ready for the reason that everyone had worked so hard for – the project visits. We drove an hour out of Duhlikel and were shocked to see the rundown state of the old health clinic that had been used up until a month ago. We then walked through the village
look See the fun and excitement on the 2011 Nepal Trek video at savethechildren.org.au/charitychallenge
and saw the wonderful new health centre supported by Save the Children. The new centre is big, clean and very inviting for new mothers. Some of the funds raised by the participants will support training Village Health Workers – locals who do home visits and reach areas that do not have easy access to health facilities. The money will also buy equipment for birthing centres and to create materials to help mothers understand the importance of breastfeeding. It was then onto a school construction site where, for the next two days, we worked extremely hard to lay the foundations for a school. We dug, we picked, we moved rocks, we pulled down the mountain! All the while we had the help of the local town people – giggling school girls, singing mothers, hardworking gentleman. It was an incredible joining of two very different cultures working on the same purpose – to bring education to the lives of children in the village.
The remaining funds raised from the trip will be spent on education programs in Nepal, including refurbishing and constructing schools and a school library, building toilets and drinking-water stations, and buying education materials. The participants had brought presents, which were given to the school principal to share with the children ...and then the fun started! The kids began kicking the footy, throwing basketballs and tried to learn the yo-yo, all the while being enthralled by us. A big thank you to all of the 21 brilliant volunteers who took the time, energy and effort to fundraise over $95,000 for the children of Nepal, and for helping to start the school construction. You will be remembered forever in the hearts of many Nepalese people, just as I am sure they have all snuck their way into your hearts now too.
