"THERE is only one llach ", exclaimed Frederíek the Great when he hea,~d that master of oratorio, JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH, improvise on his pianofortes and org~ns at the palaee in Potsdam. Born in Eisenaeh, a Thuringian village in Gerrríany, March 21, 1685, little Sebastians family was known throughout the country as one of musicians. . Between 1500 and 1871, fifty-two deseendants covered the four generations .. His great-great grandfather, Veit Bach, a jovial miller, strummed his instrument and sang lustily while the noisy mill-wheel was grinding his grain. Sebastiari's father, Joh~nn Ambrosius Bach, a viola player and organist in the village ehurch, gave him Bach playing for Fr ederick the Great lessons on the violin and encouraged him to beeome a great musieian. When the lad was nine years old his mother died; the following year he lost his father. So his eldest brother, Johann Christoph, fourteen years older and a very fine musician, took charge of the, orphans. He lived .in Ohrduff, a vilIage thirty miles frorn Eisenaeh, and here the ehildren were sent to sehool at the Gymnasium. to study literature, religion .and-e-of coursc+-music. It was diffieult to get musie in those days and Christoph, who had quite a library whieh he kept under loek and key, refusedto let the boy have some sheets hewishcd to copy. Sebastian found a way to gain access to the_bookease, and night after night, for six months, copied them by rnoonlight. At the age of fourteen, he set out from home with another boy to walk to Lüneburg, a víllage 200 miles away, where they applied as choir boys at St. Miehael's. Baeh's faeilityfor reading musie and his lovely voiee so engaged the singing master that he was urged to remain. Besides developing a knowledge of church music he heard the distinguished organist Bohm. Soon he. began to "walk over to Hamburg", a distancc of thirty miles to hear the great organ master, Reinken, of St. Katherine's, give coneerts. A story is told that he sat down to rest on a hench outside an inn, undoubtedly wishing he had the money to en ter and partake of some of the delicious sausage, the cooking aroma of which tempted his appetit , Someone must have seen him, for-suddenly, two herring hcads were thrown out the window. Sebastian picked them up, and inside eaeh mouth found a gold piece. After satisfying his hunger, he undoubtedly returned to Ha mhurg to hear rnorernusic In 1703"he secured a position as organist in a new chureh at Arnstadt where his salary, including allowance for board and lodging, was about$50.00 ayear. Hcre, on a ne w organ, he was free to expand his lave of playing and eompo'sing. He began to write thpse elaborate Toccatas and Fugues. At the age of twenty-t wo . he marr-ied his iitt le cousin María Barhara and received a small "dot" to sct up housckeeping in Mühlhauscn where he aeeepted a new post. The environmcnt was not lo h is liking so he wen t to Wc-i mur, where he had a choir' of about twelve and a very substantial incornc. Hore at th« court 01' Saxe-Weimar he was made director of concerts and had to cornpose a cantata cvcry month besides special pieces for ., birthdays, weddings, funeral s, de. So he packed up his family a nd moved to grcater opport unit ic-x. .-\.t Cot hcn he wrote the immortal "48 Preludes añd Fugues". He frequently accompanied t he Prince Oll jourru-ys. Rcturning froin onc of the tours he learned that his wife, after a short illness. had dicd and was hurivd la·fof(· he could he informed. Tw o of their children, Wilhelm Friedmann and Carl Philipp Emmanuel bccarnc fa m oux JlHI SIC ia liS. In 1721, he married a musician, Anna Magadelena, who bore him thirteen children, managed his household, <copied out his works and was the source of greatest inspiration to him for the next thirty-one years .. Toward the end, his eyes began to fail and nothing could be done to prevent blindness. Hedied July 28, 1750. There was always music in the Bach farnily, all the children studied and nothing gave Baeh greater pleasure then to gather his family around him and play music.

N olden times, musical people wrote down th.eir favorite piece~ and ,~ept them .in neatl~ bound books. Three of such books were In the Bacb family : The Claoier Book prepared for the eldest son, Friedernann : a book containing the first five French Suites and a few smaller compesitions, inscribed ; "ForAnna Magdalene Bach "; ando the íamous Note-Book (1725) as reproduced above. The original of this book has a -cover of green paper, the edges oí which are stamped with a goldborder. The initials and date are in gold letters. The additional letters, speUing out "Arma MagdeL Bach " in ink, are in the handwriting of Philip Emanuel and were undoubtedly added later. According to the date, it seems to have been given to Anna by Sebastian 01'1 her twenty-fourth birthday. Anna Magdalene, born Sept. 22, 1701, was the youngest daughter of a musician, Johann Casper Wülcken, who held an appointment as trurnpeter to the Court at Zeitz. In 1714, he was transferred to. the Duke of Weissenfels' Court and here Arma seems to have appeared in concerts., A few yearslater, she won fame as "Singer to the Prince" in Cóthen, Sebastian Bach, a widower since j uly, 1720:, and the Court conductor oí music,'fell in love with this lovely singer oí twenty and, 01) Dec. 3,.1721, they were married. Two. years later, the couple, with the children of Bach's first marriage, moved to Leipzig. . Many interesting and charming Iegends have grown up, around the "Note-Book". In his biography of Bach, PhiJlip Spitta calls it "an intimate, tender relationship between husband and wifé."· However, there is no reason to suppose it was ever intended as a record. of Bach' S· own compositions. In 1725, he wrote out two. of his piano suites, in the book an.d after that, he seerns to have surrendered the book entirely to the fancy of his wife's taste. A third of the pieces in the "Note-Book " are in Anna's. handwriting. The contente seerns. to cover a long period and' f.or : months at a time, there are no entries. Meanwhile, the children were growing up and needed teaching pieces to play on the clavichord or rnusic for dancir:ig~marches, gavottes, minuets. polonaises, etc. As. Papa Bach was always a busy man , it rested UpORthe lovable, unselfish Ann.a to. collect simple and practical material. As the children grew up they also tried their hand at COIIIposing and Mother's beloved music-book 'becarne a convenient place to jot it d,OWR. The pietv and devotion of the Bachs accounts forthe frequent appearances of Chorales and religious mlls.¡c.
