FOUNDER’S LETTER
hen you live in California, home for the holidays is not such a bad place to be. For the most part, you won’t see snow-dusted landscapes (unless you escape to the
mountains), but the holiday spirit permeates our environs nonetheless. With traditions of Christmas parades dotting your local main street, menorahs lit every
evening in town squares and seasonal parties galore, it is a special time of year.
While many friends use the school break as a time to jet off to locales far away (and no one is
saying that isn’t fun), I think it is a great time of year to stay put and enjoy the beauty our state
has to offer. Perhaps it just seems a little bit quieter on the road; it almost feels like we have the
place to ourselves. A drive to dramatic Big Sur or quaint Carmel can feel like a break from the ordinary routine. Or, for the ski bunnies, Tahoe or Mammoth might be calling your name. There is so much to do in our own backyard; I say, take advantage of it all. Look no further than this issue’s features for cues on how to make merry this season. If attorney Kevin Yorn decides to hang at his Los Angeles home, no one would fault him: Envisioned with the help of Vanessa Alexander, it is at once design-forward yet comfortable. And if the Hamilton family wants to stay put at their abode in Napa, we couldn’t imagine a lovelier place to nest than among their world-class art collection and gorgeous gardens. The Palm Springs area is another great spot to head to during these winter months. We took the
Founder’s Letter
best of resort fashion and headed deep into the desert. The stark white architecture of Rancho Mirage was the perfect backdrop for the punch of prints and colors that dominated the collections. Speaking of covetable clothing, style setter, songstress and screen siren Charlotte Gainsbourg found modern classic pieces that fit her signature easygoing and elegant look for this month’s cover shoot. Besides being about the chicest girl out there, she knows who she is, and isn’t afraid to be herself. Recently, she brought a slice of her effortless look to us mere mortals by partnering with Current/Elliott to create a capsule collection—perfect to pack in your weekender bag for one of your California staycations, indeed. But before you are off, it is time to make your list and check it twice and be sure you are well prepared for the gift-giving extravaganza. Our editors scoured the state (and the globe, for that matter) for presents that are sure to thrill even the most jaded of recipients. Or, perhaps you can follow Lulu deKwiatkowski’s lead and make your own holiday ornaments to decorate and to give with love. Because in the end, it really isn’t about the actual gift but the idea that you thought of that loved one during the busiest time of year. Whatever you do, wherever you go, we hope you enjoy it—even if all you do is go down to the beach, with toes in the sand and watch the sunset,

It is our entire automotive philosophy set in motion. Again.
The 2014 S-Class. 127 years ago, the founder of Mercedes-Benz challenged his employees to deliver “the best or nothing.” The 2014 S-Class is proof that his words still resonate to this day. Building on its own history of innovation, the groundbreaking 2014 S-Class features dual 12.3" high-resolution screens, hot stone massage seating and an aromatic filtration system on the inside, while outside, a revolutionary MAGIC BODY CONTROL system uses cameras to scan the road for imperfections and instantly adjust the suspension for a superior ride. lthough Gucci has been dressing Tinseltown’s brightest stars for decades, it wasn’t until recently that the company started thinking beyond the red carpet. For that, you can credit Creative Director Frida Giannini. In brokering a slew of philanthropic endeavors
and sponsorships within the film industry, the savvy 42-yearold Roman saw the opportunity to contribute to worthy causes, which just happened to increase the brand’s visibility and forge celebrity relationships. Since 2006 (a year after Giannini came on board), Gucci has donated more than $3 million to Martin Scorsese’s The Film Foundation, which preserves such classics as Joseph Happened One Night (1934). Additionally there’s a Gucci documentary fund with New York’s Tribeca Film Institute, as well as the Annual Gucci Award for Women in Cinema

at the Venice International Film Festival and, most recently, a partnership with the Biennale di Venezia on the Biennale College-Cinema, a program dedicated to fostering the talent of young filmmakers. Then, of course, there’s LACMA’s annual Art + Film Gala, which the fashion house underwrites and Giannini attends, dressing some of the more illustrious guests. Held each November, this year’s event drew a bevy of Gucci-clad beauties including Cara Delevingne, Kate Hudson and Jennifer Lopez. Giannini, however, seemed most taken with the night’s honoree, director Quentin Tarantino. “He’s a creative genius,” she

later exclaimed. “I love his work and appreciate the way he creates the story.”
It will probably come as no surprise that Giannini is
something of a film buff. At her home in Rome, which she shares with her partner, Gucci CEO Patrizio di Marco, and their young daughter, Greta, she has a private screening room where she watches the latest releases along with old favorites like Breakfast at Tiffany’s, The Godfather and Scarface. Giannini brought her love for film and reverence for Gucci’s longstanding relationship with Hollywood to the redesign of the label’s flagship Rodeo Drive boutique. “From film collaborations to outstanding red carpet moments, CONTINUED ON PAGE 168

hink about how your American-made jeans come into being, and your mind likely goes to a Jules Verne place: a factory in which an industrial-sized machine manifests cropped drainpipes at the touch of an LED button—spitting them out whole in the manner of a toaster presenting an Eggo waffle. But visit J.Crew’s South L.A. sewing facility or Huntington Park washhouse and the reality is more lo-fi and decidedly hands-on: a finely orchestrated production line including stone-wash cycles with golf balls and porous pumice stones, and manual tasks by craftsmen trained in finessing 3-D resin-coated whiskers, sandpapering wear lines or wielding a dentist’s drill–sounding Dremel air tool to inflict the subtlest bit of fray on the edge of a pocket. The New York–headquartered brand made its foray into premium denim relatively recently—opening its West Coast design studio in May 2013 and joining the ranks of Current/ Elliott, J Brand, 7 For All Mankind, Citizens of Humanity, Paige Denim and others manufactured in Southern California, aka the mecca for high-fashion jeans. “Being in L.A. keeps us connected to the latest developments in the market,” says Tom Mora, J.Crew’s head of women’s design. “It’s a cool, creative hub with a concentration of resources, the best sewing and washing available, and a skilled workforce that understands the subtleties and nuances of fit and wash. We wanted to have immediate and constant access to it.” The company produces its more affordable core denim in Mexico and China, but its premier labels originate here, including workwear-inspired men’s line Wallace & Barnes and the jewel in the crown: new women’s offering Point Sur—the brainchild of Palos Verdes-raised J.Crew President and Executive Creative Director Jenna Lyons. She created the range when she couldn’t find the perfect vintage-imbued pair for her own closet—the sort of effortless, second-skin jeans that work just as well with Carven as they do with a threadbare retro tee and, most crucially, look and feel like you’ve had them forever. The collection—which launched in the spring and features silhouettes including a dramatically high-waisted skinny CONTINUED ON PAGE 168

SANTA MONICA
FOREIGN EXCHANGE When Santa Monica–based Julia and Craig Noik began conceptualizing their inaugural skincare line, African Botanics, three years ago, the husband-and-wife team turned to their native South Africa for their all-star ingredient, marula seed oil. Derived from sun-dried marula nuts, which are cracked open and cold-pressed by women in Fair Trade co-ops, the unrefined oil is loaded with antioxidants, minerals, nutrients and fatty acids—ideal for combating dehydration and premature aging, as well as repairing skin. “Our
inspiration is to create products that capture South Africa’s beauty, textures and earth elements combined in potent formulations for maximum skin benefits,” explains Julia. “We wanted to offer the sensory experience of being somewhere exotic.” The line does just that, with best-sellers including neroli-infused marula oil, botanical body cream, shimmering gold oil and, just in time for winter, a nourishing intense skin-repair balm. ABOUT FACE When Prabal Gurung launched his namesake line in 2009, MAC Cosmetics stepped up to support the budding designer. Now the relationship comes full circle, with a limited-edition collaboration launching in December. Two years in the making, the 14-piece collection, available at MAC boutiques including the new store on North Beverly Drive, features nude and charcoal shades, as well as lipstick hues that transition effortlessly from day to night. maccosmetics.com.

hether you’re sprinting or sun-saluting your way to 2014’s finish line, rest assured you’ll be doing so in luxury activewear. With a number of designers showing sport-inspired 2015 collections, the fashion world has confirmed what we in the Golden State, and co-founder of Lolë activewear Eva Guerrand-Hermès—yes, that Hermès—have known all along: Yoga pants are an acceptable substitute for skinny jeans. And nowhere is this more applicable than in L.A., where, as Guerrand-Hermès notes, in a day “you can go from hiking in the mountains or yoga on the beach to a business lunch.” On the heels of launching her brand’s second California atelier in Brentwood, filled with practical, essential pieces, she observes, “I believe that Lolë gives the fashion-forward yet active Angeleno a solid ‘studio-to-street’ offering.” For Guerrand-Hermès and a number of “family-oriented and career-driven” ladies who call the Westside home, to live actively extends beyond the confines of classes at next-door Maha Yoga or gluten-free brunching at A Votre Sante to include engaging with, building and giving back to the community. Artist and textile designer Lulu deKwiatkowski hosts an ornament decorating party, no smocks required
F
BY CHRISTINE LENNON PHOTOGRAPHED BY ANGIE SMITH
rom their garden high atop Mulholland Drive, Lulu deKwiatkowski and Alfredo Gilardini have the kind of full-sky view framed by lush azaleas that Los Angeles is famous for. On a typical fall Sunday, their 1960s ranch home brims with color and joy. The French doors are usually open to a long, brick patio and a well-used outdoor fireplace. The rooms are alive with paintings and textiles from her eponymous Lulu DK line, and the sounds Ariana Lambert Smeraldo of Lily Lodge crafted a garland out of olive branches and bay laurel to display the colorful ornaments.

of three growing boys at play. But during the holidays, and at her annual Christmas ornament decorating party in particular, deKwiatkowski’s friends and family have come to expect a kind of next-level coziness that only a seriously skilled hostess can pull off. “What can you do?” she asks with a shrug, after an errant soccer ball flies off of the grassy yard and onto a table covered with artfully displayed paint palettes, brushes, bottles of glue and bowls of sequins to adorn plastic (and, yes, glass) ornaments. “You’ve got to laugh it off. Smile your way through it!” DeKwiatkowski is such an ideal Los Angeles host—impossibly relaxed, bohemian, unfussy and chic in denim and silk—that it’s hard to believe she’s not, in fact, an Angeleno. She grew up in Manhattan and spent summers on the beaches of Long Island. She and Gilardini, a writer and producer, flirted with L.A. for years before they finally decided to put down roots just shy of seven years ago when they were expecting twins. “I grew up with very traditional Christmases in New York, and then my family would always travel to the Bahamas for a winter holiday,” she says. “There were six children in our family, and my mother was always organizing a cookie decorating party—the holidays were so important to her. Honoring traditions has always been a priority to me, so I wanted to make something of my own.” For the past three years, she has hosted an ornament decorating party, inviting creative friends like painter Bess Ratliff, fashion designer Natalie Martin, interior designer Sienna Oosterhouse, actress Amber Mead, Petit Trésor co-owner Nina Takesh and florist Ariana Lambert Smeraldo (who brings armloads of greenery from her flower shop, Lily Lodge), and their children to decorate simple white and glass balls to take home for their own trees. “The holidays can be so stressful, but you never feel that here,” says Martin, as she fastens a tassel to her own little masterpiece. “At Lulu’s, it’s all about family and kids and friends. No one is worried about getting their hands dirty.” There’s always a table filled with kid-friendly snacks and adult-friendly beverages, and people rarely leave until the sun dips below the hills with a splash of painterly color—a display nearly as vibrant as the string of decorations drying in the breeze. •

RH takes design to another level with the opening of a sparkling, museumworthy gallery in West Hollywood—and a rooftop you might never leave
T
BY JENNIE NUNN
here are very good reasons that it took four years and more than 300 people working around the clock to open RH West Hollywood, The Gallery on Melrose Avenue. Whether you blame it on 18 heritage olive trees flown in from Italy that make up a public rooftop park, the facade lined with Venetian plaster, boxwood topiaries and massive banana palm trees, or the 15-foot-tall steel gates designed as a nod to Italian mastermind Carlos Scarpa—it was all well worth the wait. Built in collaboration with architect James Gillam of Backen, Gillam & Kroeger (the Sausalito-based firm that designed Restoration Hardware Chairman and CEO Gary Friedman’s own Marin residence and collaborated with him on RH galleries in Houston and Greenwich, Conn.), the museumlike structure located across from Urth Café and the Pacific Design Center is a design dream come true. Think staircases lined with antique gilded mirrors and that pristinely manicured 10,000-square-foot rooftop garden showcasing the brand’s outdoor furniture collection, replete with modern concrete fire tables, wall fountains, a
pingpong table and a 40-foot-long table made of two planks of reclaimed pine. “The rooftop is a real destination, and I think people in the neighborhood will want to spend a lot of time there,” says Gillam. What sets the gallery apart, though, is the resort-like vibe: Impeccably styled rooms are arranged by style, color and category. Couple that with five-star service including an on-site team of design experts working with existing floor plans and photos, and offering up advice on everything from fabric and upholstery options to paint color (they also make house calls). “We are trying to be unpredictable, and we think until it hurts, so that the whole experience as you walk through will be like no other home store that anyone’s ever seen,” says Friedman. And the gallery is just that, down to every meticulous detail, including a giant sculpture anchored at the top of the building to pay homage to the City of Angels: a 10-foot-tall vintage, angelic replica of the Louvre’s Winged Victory of Samothrace procured by Friedman at a Parisian flea market. There’s also a Ben Soleimani rug showroom, and a Bellocq Organic Tea Atelier, while store vignettes throughout are layered with found objects such as aviation artifacts, salvaged ship propellers and Old World maps. Says Friedman, “The No. 1 comment we hear people say when they come into the new galleries that we’ve built is: ‘I just want to live here.’ ” 8564 Melrose Ave., West Hollywood, 310-652-0323; restorationhardware.com. • MARK HUG/RESTORATION HARDWARE

elebrity chef and author Alex Hitz has taught legions of fans to cook with his legendary book, My Beverly Hills Kitchen. But when he accepted an invitation from friend and fellow Angeleno Kim Uzielli to instruct a cooking club of kitchen-savvy friends on how to prepare a holiday feast, Hitz was faced with the challenge of teaching his very first class. “Kim called me and asked, ‘Would you ever do this?’ ”

recalls Hitz in his distinctive Southern drawl. “Usually when I cook, it’s for a charity raising zillions of dollars, or for a big event. But I wanted to do this because it sounded fun, and I’d never done it before.” And so Hitz and Uzielli put their heads together and laid plans to re-create his signature “bulletproof” holiday menu. “That’s the Christmassy menu I grew up on,” says Hitz, whose childhood was spent between Atlanta and France. “It’s an easy one that’s “Our goal is to spend time catching up

Recipes in one hand and wine glasses in another, 11 attendees gathered in Uzielli’s kitchen for the tutorial, which culminated in Hitz’s chocolate soufflé. With prep work taken care of prior to arrivals, Hitz whipped up his holiday extravaganza in an hour and a half, and served dinner on time. Guests including Shelley Litvak and Jennifer Nordstrom took their seats in Uzielli’s festive dining room, which she had decorated earlier that day using white hydrangeas and red gooseberries—a trick Uzielli learned during her early days working at a flower shop.
Marveling over the seemingly effortless feast, the friends exchanged strategies for their own forthcoming Christmas dinner menus before bidding adieu with signed copies of Hitz’s book. Says Uzielli, “The highlight of the night was having fun with these great girls who have been with the group for such a long time, and having my daughters say, ‘Mommy, we heard you laughing all night! Italian actress Silvana Mangano and film producer Dino De Laurentiis, reconnected on a flight from Los Angeles to Rome in 2010. That high-altitude meeting prompted a trip down sartorial memory lane, during which the pair revisited Mangano’s longstanding relationship A trolley with the label—from the from the capsule faille fabric and leathercollection. trimmed trench coat she wore in the 1974 Luchino Visconti film Gruppo di Famiglia in un Interno (Conversation Piece) to her more personal items, including a vintage Pergamena suitcase toted on globecircling jaunts. Taking those design moments as a jumping-off point, the resulting capsule collection dedicated to the late screen goddess (whose proceeds go to benefit De Laurentiis’ charity the Silvana Mangano Center) swings from silk and cashmere maxi scarves to elegant leather Boston bags; in short, everything you might need for an Italian getaway—or an Old World-inspired stay closer to home. fendi.com.

Buffum Chandler reshaped the CultureDorothy (Opener) cultural landscape of L.A. with her vision of a world-class performing arts center
LIFE MAGAZINE
C A Life magazine photo of Dorothy Buffum Chandler in the lobby of her beloved L.A. Music Center.
WRITTEN AND EDITED BY ELIZABETH KHURI CHANDLER
alifornia may be a younger state than its eastern-seaboard cousins, but we do have a tradition of charitable giving and bringing together the city’s diverse groups in the name of a great cause. Dorothy Buffum Chandler, the whirlwind force behind the creation of our performing arts center in Downtown Los Angeles, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this December, is part of the not-so-shabby history of fundraising in the city. Full disclosure: I first heard of “Mama Buff,” as the Chandlers call her, when my husband (her great-grandson Otis Yeager Chandler) and I were dating. Coming from Northern California, I wasn’t particularly familiar with her, but something about this woman intrigued me: Relatives floated words like “imperious” and “fearless.” “She was a tiger,” another told me. She was polarizing. She certainly didn’t sound like your stereotypical 1950s rich man’s wife. Chandler spearheaded the fundraising of more than $18 million—some $138 million in today’s money—for the Los Angeles Music Center. It wasn’t a dilettante’s vanity project either: Work began in 1950, when she joined the board of the Southern California Symphony Association, and it became a lifelong passion, continuing long after 1964, when Bob Hope led the center’s opening. For many years, in between appearing before Congress to encourage cultural exchange between the U.S. and the Soviet Union, or overseeing the acquisition and installation of Picassos and Diebenkorns in the Times Mirror Building, Chandler launched a campaign that was formidable. Born in 1901, she went to Stanford University, where she met and married Norman Chandler, eldest son and eventual successor to the powerful Los Angeles Times publisher/real estate mogul Harry Chandler. Chandler struggled with her confidence, especially since she felt unaccepted by many of Norman’s relatives because she was not from the then-inner circle of Los Angeles society. >>
<< In 1932, 10 years after her marriage, she moved in with psychiatrist Josephine Jackson for a month (an approach nearly unheard of at the time) to work on overcoming her own sense of inadequacy. According to the biography Privileged Son, Jackson told her, “stop being a passive victim and start getting involved.” With her new sense of resolve, Chandler’s path to find a home for the L.A. Philharmonic became awesome in its ambition and execution. And she was clever about getting things done in the “Mad Men” world of the ’50s and ’60s. Fundraising occurred either at home in the pool house—called “the Pub”—in the backyard of her Hancock Park home, or at the local fancy restaurant Perino’s. At the Pub, celebrities such as Nat King Cole would stop by to hand-deliver $25,000 checks. At Perino’s, in order to stave off the traditional “man pays for a woman’s meal” rule, Chandler arranged for all bills to be sent to her home rather than be presented at the restaurant. As a woman, she had more leeway than a man to be unconventional: Chandler refused to conduct any meetings at the California Club or Jonathan Club, which also didn’t accept minorities. “I’m not like that,” Chandler famously said. “To me it [fundraising for the Music Center] did more to break down the barriers against Hollywood, against Jews, against new-timers than anything that’s happened in our city.”
FROM TOP LEFT The Music Center today; the 1966 statue in the courtyard by Jacques Lipchitz is called Peace on Earth. Chandler with the architect of the center, Welton Becket, and music director Zubin Mehta; as president of the Southern California Symphony Association Hollywood Bowl, she recommended Mehta for the position, initiating a tradition of young, fresh talent for Los Angeles—a trajectory that continues today with Gustavo Dudamel. A billboard thanking Chandler for her efforts. Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater is one of the highlights of The Music Center’s dance program. Placido Domingo directs the center’s L.A. Opera, the fourth-largest opera company in the U.S. Women from the “Buck Bag” campaign. Elizabeth Taylor at the the Academy Awards, which were held at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion 25 times from 1969 to 2002.
Culture (Turn)
Heading over from her office at the Times Mirror Building, Chandler would intercept guests on their way to meet with her husband. She asked Henry
Kissinger for money, and J. Paul Getty when she stopped in London on the way to a couture fitting in Paris. Mark Taper dropped a cool million. Relatives recall stories of her ripping up checks, declaring, “You can do better.” Under her unflappable steam, then-disparate groups all opened their pocketbooks. The Blue Ribbon Committee, powered by 1,000 women volunteers, raised $1 million; a benefit premiere of Cleopatra earned $1 million for the center; the Chinese community contributed $15,000; the Japanese government donated $10,000; the Mormon Choir of Southern California donated $25,000 from performances of Handel’s Messiah. Chandler’s next idea, to ask every Angeleno to donate a buck and toss it in a brown bag, netted nearly $2.2 million. After the center opened on Dec. 6, 1964, with performances by Van Cliburn, Frank Sinatra and the L.A. Phil conducted by the young hotshot Zubin Mehta, Chandler continued to fundraise for nearly the rest of her life. Daughter-in-law Bettina Chandler recalls being with Chandler when they bumped into Cary Grant in the elevator at the Music Center in the 1980s. Grant reminded her that he had dropped off a $25,000 check at her house in Hancock Park in 1962. “It’s time for you to write another,” Chandler quipped. Today the Music Center is a linchpin of Downtown, and the home of the L.A. Opera, L.A. Philharmonic, Center Theatre Group and L.A. Master Chorale. There are eight venues, including a cityscape-altering structure by Frank Gehry. It hosts dance companies from around the globe, and a cornucopia of other events that activate the community. Yet the memories of the regal Chandler, who died in 1997, remain intimidating. “She was such a good fundraiser because people were a little scared of her,” recalls grandson Harry Brant Chandler. Mama Buff doesn’t sound very warm and fuzzy. (Then again, neither do Hillary Clinton or Sheryl Sandberg.) But without a doubt, the cultural fabric of Los Angeles wouldn’t be what it is without her. 50th Anniversary Spectacular, Dec. 6, 7 p.m.; The Next Fifty Party, Dec. 7, 6 p.m.; musiccenter.org. •

California-based galleries and artists get ready to make their mark on Art Basel Miami
F
ab parties aside, Art Basel Miami Beach is the go-to place for galleries looking to connect with serious collectors. This year, San Francisco’s Jessica Silverman Gallery breaks into the fair for the first time in a section designed for artists showing new works created in the last three years. Silverman’s curated grouping of three artists includes Ruairiadh O’Connell, Hugh Scott-Douglas and recent Whitney Biennial participant Dashiell Manley. An L.A. artist to watch whose output has dramatically shifted gears, Manley’s paintings and films exhibit “the way abstraction mutates when it travels across mediums,” says Silverman. Elsewhere, L.A.’s Honor Fraser Gallery highlights Botswana-born artist Meleko Mokgosi, Kohn Gallery makes an appearance, and Freedman Fitzpatrick will show work by former MAK Schindler Resident Lucie Stahl. S.F.’s Altman Siegel will also be showing Bay Area local Liam Everett for the first time. And in the Kabinett sector, designed to highlight various artists from the world’s top 200 galleries, L.A.’s Dianna Molzan and Sausalito’s Etel Adnan get an airing. Ladies and gentlemen, take out your pocketbooks. artbasel.com.

It’s a crisp fall morning in New York’s West Village, and the chanteuse and actress is running a few minutes behind for our meeting at Hamilton’s Soda Fountain cafe. Wearing a pair of her favorite Notify jeans, a pumpkin-colored cashmere sweater and one of her classic Balenciaga fitted tweed blazers, the milky-skinned Gainsbourg slithers between tables, offering a warm smile. It’s easy to see why she is often viewed as the modern-day embodiment of French elegance. Unlike her more polished counterparts (family friend and France’s former first lady Carla Bruni, for example), Gainsbourg has perfected the insouciant, just-rolledout-of-bed-and-threw-this-together look. “I still don’t know how to sell myself, and that’s OK,” she admits. Earlier this year, she launched a capsule collection of personal favorites (including classic button-downs and shrunken leather jackets) with L.A.-based Current/ Elliott, and she has been a muse and friend to designer Nicolas Ghesquière for more than 16 years—a relationship that has also helped her to achieve a record of flawless red carpet appearances. “I just finished filming four movies in a row,” she says (implying many forthcoming step-and-repeats). “[Right] now, I’m enjoying my kids and gathering my thoughts.” Gainsbourg’s apparent idleness fuels her imagination—it’s a vital time for her artistically curious old soul, which she inherited from her parents. Her father is the late music icon Serge Gainsbourg, the unchallenged patron saint of French provocateurs, and her mother British actress, singer and quintessential “it girl” Jane Birkin. Born in London in 1971, Gainsbourg was raised in Paris with half-sisters Kate Barry and Lou Doillon from her mother’s side. It was her father who first coaxed a then-12-year-old Charlotte to record the duet “Lemon Incest” on his album, marking a scandalous beginning to her singing career. Like her mother, Gainsbourg was also born to be an actor, first evidenced with her 1984 role in the film Paroles et Musique alongside Catherine Deneuve. Despite accolades including César Awards (France’s “Oscars”) for Most Promising Actress in 1985 for L’effrontée and later, in 2000, Best Supporting Actress for the film La Bûche— not to mention a Cannes Film Festival Best Actress award in 2009 for Antichrist—she has no desire to “make it” in Hollywood. “It’s not a goal of mine,” she says. Instead, she welcomes scripts from cerebral European auteurs she admires. This selfselecting approach pays critical dividends: She’s transitioned between American dramas (21 Grams), whimsical art-house flicks (The Science of Sleep), and Lars von Trier’s tortured, psychological sex
tales, including the aforementioned Antichrist and Nymphomaniac I & II. Offscreen she has morphed into a cheerful, doting mom, building a strong family story with her partner of 23 years, actor and director Yvan Attal (they have three children together, ages 17, 12 and 3). The couple met on set in 1991, and worked together on films including My Wife Is an Actress (2001) and Happily Ever After (2004). Despite Gainsbourg’s professional and personal successes, she still exhibits deep feelings of loss for her father, who passed away suddenly from a heart attack in 1991. He was her mentor, both in life and in music (in 1986, she collaborated with him on her debut album, Charlotte for Ever), and it wasn’t until 15 years after his death that she was ready to embrace new music projects for the first time without his blessing. “[He] was putting the bar so high that it was hard for me to dare going there,” she says. “I realized recently that I just need to relax—make it a bit less dramatic. It’s not about being genius, or having a divine gift. I’m starting to understand that [creating music] is less abstract; more simple than what I had imagined when I was younger.” In 2006, she released the album 5:55 with the help of the French duo Air, followed by a collaboration with Beck titled IRM (2009)—named for the French acronym for an MRI (she had experienced a cerebral hemorrhage, the result of a waterskiing accident, in 2007). Gainsbourg recorded the LP at Beck’s L.A. home studio. “It was great to discover that Los Angeles is not a desert disguised into highways,” she says. “The music scene is extremely stimulating.” Her 2010 Coachella gig was a watershed moment. For a split second, before taking the monumental stage in front an ocean of people, she almost retreated. “But then it was miraculous,” she says. “The audience really carried me through. It was a revelation.” Since then, Gainsbourg has turned her focus back to the silver screen. The 2015 release of director Wim Wenders’ dark, 3-D drama Every Thing Will Be Fine pits Gainsbourg alongside James Franco. But crossgenre diversions are never far: In her spare time she plays the piano, writes lyrics and sketches— another trait inherited from her father. “I’m a spasmodic [artist], classically trained,” says Gainsbourg, who has contemplated releasing a book of drawings on her favorite theme: her children. “I [use] a very special ink pen; extremely precise,” she adds, before revealing its most compelling feature: “It also allows me to have accidents—and I love accidents.” And if anyone understands the mesmerizing effect of imperfect beauty, it’s her. •

NTERTAINMENT ATTORNEY Kevin Yorn counts some of Hollywood’s hottest talents, such as Ellen DeGeneres, Scarlett Johansson and Matthew McConaughey, as clients and inspirations. Yorn, who also acts as a liaison for his client’s investments in the Silicon Valley tech sector, is the cofounder of Morris Yorn Barnes Levine Krintzman Rubenstein & Kohner. “I get to work with a lot of really creative people,” Yorn says. “Growing up in the suburbs in New Jersey, I never understood that much about interior design until I met Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi. Every time they’ve done a new house, which is often, I’ve been blown away. I thought, ‘Wow, I can have a house that speaks to me and makes me feel good when I walk in. I can have that for my friends and family.’” When Yorn purchased his 5,500-square-foot Mediterranean-style home in Brentwood two years ago, he turned to friend and designer Vanessa Alexander to create a more masculine, contemporary space with the richness of 1920s Hollywood. “The Chateau Marmont and Greenwich Hotel were big influences,” Alexander says, “but ultimately it was Kevin who informed the design by his lifestyle. He’s very social, with a large extended family and friends. He wanted a place where he could equally entertain his 90-year-old grandfather and play music with his brothers and friends.” Yorn grew up playing music in the basement of his family’s home with his brothers, singer Pete Yorn and talent manager and producer Rick Yorn. “When I walked into this house, the first room I saw was a study, and I immediately thought of turning it into a music room where I could play all of my vinyl,” Yorn says. Friends often end up in this room after enjoying pizza from the outdoor oven, or wander inside to play one of his vintage 1960s Martin or Gibson guitars in the living room. “This house is about music and art. My daughter is a songwriter. She’s a freshman in high school and will have her friends over for a listening party or they’ll all play vinyl. When I see that, it makes me the happiest.” Each room, Alexander says, expresses a different side of Yorn’s creative passions, whether that’s the open kitchen where he can cook on the island while talking to guests, or the dramatic metal doors inspired by one of his favorite hotels in New York that open from the living room to the outdoor pool deck that’s covered in reclaimed wood from the Coney Island Boardwalk. In addition to works from artists Matthew Brandt and Jennifer Boysen, photographs by sister-in-law Beth Yorn and his daughter hang on the walls. “The house is filled with these very personal things that tell a story,” Yorn says. “It’s cool to me.” •

crescendo. In any sport, especially with surfing, you’re always looking for an opportunity from Mother Nature.
T’S RARE TO FIND Laird Hamilton and Gabrielle Reece in repose. Surfing legend Hamilton and pro volleyball player Reece are always on the move, whether they’re demonstrating their natural athletic prowess (a video of Hamilton riding a wave for 400 yards and then maneuvering between Malibu Pier’s narrow pilings went viral this summer) or traveling between their homes in Malibu and Hawaii along with their two daughters, Reece, 11, and Brodie, 6. C Editor-at-Large Kendall Conrad caught up with the couple in Malibu as they prepared to head back to their ranch in Kauai for the winter. After an underwater training session, a hot sauna stint and an icy plunge in a galvanized tub, they opened up about everything from Reece’s new high-intensity circuit-training class to Hamilton conquering 100-foot waves and the first time they met.
KC: What’s going through your mind when you’re hitting 50 mph on 100-foot waves? LH: There is no room for conscious thought other than what you have to do. Your unconscious moves at 32,000 times the speed of your conscious mind, which in a way, if you’re able to tap into that, is like being telepathic. They call it genius when the conscious thought becomes unconscious, like when somebody masters something after 10,000 hours. At that point it’s an unconscious act, and it is really motored by your experience. Surfing is a thing that has no beginning and no end—I think that there are very few things we experience in our life that are like that. Meditation can get you into a similar zone. Sex too, when you’re in that moment of true intimacy, there is no time or space. Nothing gives you a greater feeling of accomplishment, which is what I think all of us are seeking in everything we’re doing.
for the TV show “The Extremists.” Was it love at first sight? LH: It was more like love at first conversation. GR: Once you get Laird’s respect then you’re in good shape. LH: We both grew up on islands. We had some parent situations that were less than normal. I wanted to construct a different life and reality for myself and have a partner who felt the same way. GR: And you want to break the bad things but borrow the good things. Once we realized that, we were living together eight days later. KC: Gabby, you’ve co-authored two books. What’s appealing to you about that medium? GR: Well I wrote a book in ’97 called Big Girl in the Middle, and I had been writing columns for magazines since ’92. I like to connect with people through writing because it can be about them too, not just “How’s my spike?” or, “How does my skin look?” I joked about doing a blog called Death by Domestication that talked about trying to balance all these things: being a woman, being in a relationship, growing older, finding happiness as an individual and bringing children into it. So it started as a joke, because I thought a lot of people probably feel that way—how do you navigate that and not die in it? My manager at the time actually asked if I would be interested in expanding that into a book, and then I hooked up with Karen Karbo again [for 2013’s My Foot Is Too Big for the Glass Slipper: A Guide to the Less Than Perfect Life].

KC: You recently seized an opportunity to shoot the Malibu Pier. What was that like? LH: Shooting the pier is just taking advantage of a uniquely large swell in Malibu. People say, “Why would you do that?” I tell them it’s like climbing up a cliff you want to jump off—you finally get to the place that you’re going to jump, and of course you’re going to because you’ve climbed all the way there. The pier just represents the end of the ride, the

KC: Gabby, how do you feel about him on these waves? GR: Laird approaches his sport with a really professional attitude. His preparation and training give me a lot of confidence. It’s part of his destiny and I certainly would never get in the way of someone’s destiny. He is one of the most talented athletes I have ever met, but really he’s more of an artist and it is his art. I have had moments though, like once a year, when I wake up and get a feeling: Somehow I always get him on the phone and I say, “Yo, heads up.” I’ll get instincts and I always honor that. KC: Laird, you met Gabby in 1995, when she interviewed you
KC: How do you balance family life between here and Hawaii? LH: I’m always ready for the change at the end of the season. It’s super balanced. Gabby says the girls are such troopers, and I say, “Well, that’s because we’ve trooped them.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 168

N A HIDDEN CORNER of northern Napa Valley, shimmering light filters through the silver leaves of stately olive trees and glazes the hand-hewn sandstone walls of a former ghost winery, c. 1880. A green moat of grape vines and overgrown oleander hedges obscure the ivy-covered residence and ensure the solitude and silence that Lucy and Bill Hamilton crave, far from the social whirl. The Hamiltons, generous philanthropists who grace opera galas and museum exhibition openings in San Francisco and Lexington, Ky., appreciate the embrace of the 18-inch-thick walls of their rustic retreat and have turned the house into a gallery for their museum-quality collections of French masters, Impressionists, and European and Chinese antiques. “This house is magical for us,” says Lucy, whose family owns Overbrook Farm, a world-famous thoroughbred horse farm in Lexington. “I was captivated by this house the moment I saw it. I love the silence and the privacy it offers, and the feeling of history in its massive walls and noble structure.” The three-level house, now glittering with 18th-century Swedish chandeliers, Chinese lacquer screens and Arts & Crafts furniture, is adorned with Lucy’s notable collection of paintings by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Édouard Manet, Henri Fantin-Latour and Paul Cézanne, as well as contemporary sculptures by Marino Marini and Andy Goldsworthy. The Hamiltons worked closely with interior designer Matthew Carter to bring their collections and interiors into focus, and to create the comfort and delight they wanted for their summer sojourns with children and grandchildren. Carter, of Matthew Carter Interiors in Lexington, and San Francisco architect Sandy Walker laid out a new configuration of rooms, including turning the former kitchen into a bedroom, and simplifying the floor plans. Bare concrete floors were softly waxed and covered with timeworn Oushak and Serapi carpets. “When Bill and Lucy first showed me the house it had been somewhat neglected and the gardens were overgrown, but the bones of the original winery were intact,” notes Carter. “We worked for three years to restore the gardens, and to create new light-filled living spaces that would enhance enjoyment of summer entertaining in the Napa Valley.” Walker added a pool house in a shaded corner of the garden. As the house was being restored, Lucy gathered an inventory of inherited furniture, paintings and antiques, and her treasure trove of Jansen tables, Diego Giacometti tables, and a pair of Gothic Revival iron and stone console tables. The designer refreshed down-filled sofas and antique chairs with slipcovers for a more relaxed mood. “I’m addicted to Fortuny, so we used eight different smaller-scale designs, in the more relaxed and rustic patterns,” says Lucy. The Hamiltons’ connoisseurship is evident in every room. Lucy lived in France for 30 years and had a house in London, so she has a very close understanding of classical design and French taste. Bill’s taste, in counterpoint, veers toward Chinese antiques and Aesthetic Movement furniture. And his highly admired ink cartoons for The New Yorker, gold-framed, hang in his study and in the library, his ironic and astute social commentary in frisky juxtaposition to romantic paintings by Jean Giorgio de Chirico, Odilon Redon and Renoir, and exquisite Henri Fantin-Latour paintings of garden roses. The relaxed mix of styles, the jostle of rustic with refined, was very thought-out, says Carter. “Lucy and Bill enjoy the solitude and are the most wonderful hosts. They enjoy everything every day,” he says. “This is a vibrant home, and a life lived to the fullest.” •

we have established ourselves as a staple in Hollywood’s wardrobe,” she says, pointing out that the original boutique, which opened in 1968, was among the first international labels to open on the block. The renovated 22,000-square-foot space, which reopened in October, boasts a slick mix of historic Gucci materials like dark rosewood and marble and modern elements like ribbed and smoked glass and two-story LED wall displays. On the third floor is a sunny wraparound terrace where VIPs can shop for red carpet gowns and made to measure suiting. A veritable Gucci universe, the boutique carries the complete collection of men’s and women’s ready-to-wear, handbags, jewelry, shoes, children’s apparel and the newly launched (and highly sought-after) beauty collection. “The new store reflects a true atmosphere of luxury,” says Giannini. “It encompasses my vision for the brand moving forward.” 347 N. and a slouchy, cashmere-blended boyfriend jean (available in a spectrum of washes ranging from inky to ultra-faded and priced between $198 and $288)—is aimed at die-hards who appreciate details such as double belts, oxidized buttons and red thread-accented turnups. “We start with the best quality of fabric and build from there,” says Head of Denim Design Mary Pierson, who sources bolts of cotton from Italy, selvedge from Japan and textiles from North Carolina heritage mill Cone. “Our development is a collective process—we’re a bicoastal team but we speak the same language,” she adds. Spend an afternoon in J.Crew’s airy Arts District atelier, populated with rack upon rack of denim specimens hunted down on far-flung research trips, and indigo swatch samples named with aspirational wash monikers like Renegade, and one starts to get a feel for the dialect. A peek at the Fall 2015 samples reveals a trend toward a softer silhouette—skinny cuts lean in a more straight direction, while oversized shapes skew slightly narrower. It’s a less severe interpretation the tastemakers are betting you’ve been waiting for. Of course, you’ll have to wait a bit longer—given the behindthe-scenes workmanship that goes into nailing the line’s heritage aesthetic, the future jeans of your dreams still have a lot of living to do. jcrew.com. •

DREAM TEAM CONTINUED FROM PAGE 158
It’s what they know and it’s natural. It’s a nomadic way of life and a certain portion of people on earth are meant to migrate; it’s what the [Native Americans] have always done, animals too. KC: Laird, what is your favorite wave in California? LH: Malibu is one of the most perfect waves in the world. Rincon is also another perfect one. I love The Wedge in Newport because it has Hawaiian power. KC: And which of your new designs are you excited about? LH: My objective has been: How do I continue to enjoy surfing after more than 45 years and how do I keep it new for another 40? I’m always looking for new ways that allow me to be a beginner again and enjoy lesser surf. The Foil [board] does that. It can make medium days giant, because you’re booted in and there’s a lot more going on. It’s also more sensitive and you can ride waves that don’t break. The latest board that I have been working on is called The Serrater. It stems from the humpback whale’s side fins, which have these cuts in them that make their fins more efficient. The golf board is in production now. It’s an automated skateboard with four-wheel drive that you ride on the golf course. It activates you and it makes good players play better. KC: And what about submersibles? LH: We are working on them now. I’ll be riding waves under water before I’m finished. The sensation will be pretty fantastic riding just under the surface, beautiful! There will be a special suit that is hydrodynamic so you can get into bigger surf. In order to go 30mph underwater (that’s 300 mph through the air) you have to be shaped like a dolphin. KC: Gabby, what’s next for you? GR: I will be spending the next year and a half launching HIGHX [the circuit-training class that she created]. I will train the master trainers and then they will train others all over the world. KC: What is the significance of being a Waterman, Laird? LH: Being a Waterman means you are conscious of your existence and that you are part of it and how you manifest it. You need to be like water, and flow through life and look for the path of least resistance and be skilled at a multitude of disciplines in the water and out. Watermen, or Waterpeople, have a completely different mentality as far as the way they look at the world, their conscience, their relationship with the environment and their awareness of nature and weather. Look, the earth is 71 percent water and growing; it’s a water world. KC: How do you become a Waterman? LH: My stepdad always used to say, bigwave riders [are] born, not made. It’s the same with Watermen: You just have it in you, but

you still need to learn it and to cultivate it. I’ve been thinking a lot about [an academy] lately, a young men’s thing. Give me 15-to 20-year-olds. I’ll get a couple of my buddies and we’ll teach them how. KC: What do you find most rewarding professionally? LH: When I see 400 people paddling, lined up at the battle to race—that is the trophy I want. I couldn’t care less about plaques on my wall, but if you make people’s lives better and they are in the ocean and have an experience— that is the real stuff. KC: What does California mean to you? LH: I was born here; I will always be from California, even though I lived my entire life in Hawaii. There’s a lot of creative people, information and innovation happening here. If you want to expand your brain this is a good place to be. GR: I think California in general has so much to offer—such diverse nature, and as far as health and fitness, this is a wonderful place to learn about the latest things going on. You can dream here—I love that for my daughters. •

California CAPTURING THE GOLDEN STATE OF MIND
STORY BYLINE
REMEMBERING OSCAR DE LA RENTA AT LAKE TAHOE, 2005 Fashion designer Oscar de la Renta (1932–2014) was a Renaissance man in the truest sense: an artist, businessman, avid gardener, husband, father and gentleman. But most markedly, de la Renta was an admirer of women, and devoted his life and career to making them feel beautiful. Each summer for the past 14 years, he traveled to the shores of Lake Tahoe for a fashion show to benefit the League to Save Lake Tahoe. It was an unorthodox site for a catwalk, but the designer relished the opportunity to catch up with his San Francisco clientele. In 2005, he told C, “Lake Tahoe is like a second home to me. It is an extremely beautiful place...really a gift from God.”
