Summer is coming in hot. Whitney Wolfe Herd, founder of Bumble and cofounder of Tinder, was the world’s youngest woman ever to take a company public. She has recently added an abode in Montecito (“Appily Ever After,” p. 84) as a place for her young family to grow and thrive, and we visited her at home at the stables to see where she is happiest: among the horses with her family in tow.

Cover subject actor Kiernan Shipka (“Role Play,” p. 64) also started her career young, at 6 years old, and hasn’t stopped since. An upward trajectory starting with Mad Men to TV series and movies proves that when you are passionate about your profession, nothing can stop you. Owner Ty Warner closed the Coral Casino Beach & Cabana Club during the pandemic to give it some time — and $108 million — to catch its breath and come out again in style. Set on the shores of Butterfly Beach, the private social club has hosted many of the world’s foremost dignitaries, stars, filmmakers, and musicians.

First designed in 1937 by Gardner Dailey of San Francisco, the Moderne–Art Deco historical landmark has more recently been in the hands of architects Peter Marino and Barry Winick. Warner invited Winick to update the club after he worked alongside Marino during the original restoration project in 2008. Beyond the freshened-up backdrop, perks include the iconic glass spa, which now seats 25 with custom jets, lights, and underwater music; a cold plunge with RGB lighting and views of the Pacific Ocean, Channel Islands, and downtown Santa Barbara; 31 private oceanview cabanas; a shaded beach-entry kids’ pool; and the “Sandbox,” with 16 chaises sunk into sand imported from Malibu.

Creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri reinterpreted two toile patterns for her newest Dioriviera collection. In a town known for its exceptional creative heritage, there’s always room to experiment and play. When the Pelago decor shop in Palm Springs’ Uptown Design District shuttered, Jory Edmunds seized the opportunity to take over the light-filled retail space. At PHYLUM, which opened last fall, “we want to highlight California makers, with Scandinavian and design from unexpected places,” he explains. Classic Georg Jensen goods are on offer near pieces by L.A. ceramicists Kat and Roger and merino wool tabletop items from Graf Lantz, along with an enticing array of earthy chic global finds and apothecary indulgences. The Bay Area has played an outsize role in the way people experience music over the past century, including psychedelic posters and album covers, portable digital music players, file-sharing software, and inventive audio devices — and now SFMOMA is filling its seventh floor with some of the evidence. Art of Noise includes more than 800 works, many drawn from the museum’s extensive collection, which includes a cache of visually stunning and era-defining

1960s and ’70s posters. There are also four audio installations, including sound environments created by Stockholm-based teenage engineering (who also helped design the show) and Japanese sound artist Yuri Suzuki. Throughout the exhibition’s run, musicians and archivists are set to live-curate Brooklyn-based speaker guru Devon Turnbull’s audio sculpture. MATE GALLERY is located in Montecito’s Country Mart, the retail compound and de facto neighborhood community center, and has become an indispensable home to all things nautical. Conceived and owned by Matt Albiani and Ron Brand, the shop is a style source for tourists and natives alike, offering maritime takes on everything from clothing and vintage accessories to home furnishings. Albiani is a fashion photographer and a Boston native; Brand, a real estate agent, immigrated from Dundee, Scotland, in 1991. Together they cull and curate unique items that embody the Mate Gallery aesthetic. INVISIBLE COLLECTION, the acclaimed online design gallery founded in 2016, has descended on the West Coast for a yearlong residency within the private client room at PHILLIPS LOS ANGELES. Following two popular activations in the Hamptons and New York City, the contemporary design gallery debuted its partnership with the auction house’s L.A. outpost this spring, during Frieze, with an exhibition of high-design furniture. The rotating curation of bespoke pieces from French and European designers will reflect the gallery’s eagle-eyed aesthetic while tipping its hat to La-La Land’s glamorously eclectic style. Even before entering into their collaboration with RH in 2015, brothers Harrison and Nicholas Condos had already elevated outdoor furniture design to an art form. The Australian design duo officially launched their brand, HARBOUR FURNITURE, only five years earlier at ICFF (the annual global design fair in New York City), but their unique blend of materials and design quickly caught the eye of top interior designers and savvy individuals whose coastal homes matched the pair’s aesthetic. “We try to design collections that are familiar but fresh,” Harrison explains. And with curves in all the right places, their five new collections for RH Outdoor 2024 are no exception. For the first time, the acclaimed DESIGN MIAMI/ is coming west. The art fair, which gathers influential collectors, gallerists, designers, curators, and critics worldwide, chose a Holmby Hills estate designed by the late architect Paul R. Williams to showcase some of today’s most influential art and design. “A land of dreamers and creators, California has always been fertile ground for risk-taking and avant-garde thinking,” says curatorial director Ashlee Harrison. Visitors will see an imaginative gathering of pieces from local galleries, such as Friedman Benda, which recently opened a gallery in Melrose Hill, and The Future Perfect, known for championing artists such as Chris Wolston and Leena Similu. Line illustrations reveal the true artistic intention of each design YVES SAINT LAURENT dreamed up during his storied career from haute couture wunderkind to head of his eponymous Paris fashion house. Now his drawing practice forms the basis of a new OCMA show, Saint Laurent: Line and Expression. Pencil and pen sketches with his vibrant color combinations form the exhibition’s backbone alongside photographs, haute couture garments, and accessories created from 1963 to 2001. The Algeriaborn designer famously withdrew into solitude to devise each collection, often during twice-ayear stays in Marrakech, before handing over the ideas to the ateliers. These simple studies amount to a tour de force through his fearless innovations.

Founded in 2008, the in-demand L.A. design studio CUFF STUDIO is a go-to for A-list designers to find furniture and lighting that fuses geometry, architecture, and glamour. The firm’s principals, Wendy Schwartz and Kristi Bender, are expanding their footprint with a new showroom in Melrose Hill. The sun-drenched space will house the studio’s heirloom-quality furniture and lighting layered with vintage collectibles and art. Their first sofa, The Slant, will be included in the mix. A curvy upholstered design with tufted arms and a naturally slanted back, it is available in any fabric from the Cuff Studio library. California has such a variety of environments that it feels like a small country,” says Caroline Clements, who coauthored Places We Swim: California (Hardie Grant, $45) with environmental scientist and photographer Dillon Seitchik-Reardon. The couple, who have created guidebooks and fine art prints for water seekers in Australia, traversed hundreds of spots in the state over a six-month span and penned details on more than 50 locations for this deep dive into much-traversed treasures and hidden gems plus the hotels, campsites, and eateries surrounding them.

“We had an initial attraction to beach life,” says Clements, an editor from Melbourne. But the pair and their 2-year-old quickly realized that freshwater settings amid inland landscapes are also awash in outdoor culture. “Rivers, lakes, and hot springs loom large in the Californian consciousness,” she says. “We ask a lot of our river swims,” adds Seitchik-Reardon, who was raised in New Mexico and credits a summer spent in Yosemite with setting him on the exploratory path that has led him around the world. He points to what he calls a “Goldilocks equation,” which the couple use to evaluate places they visit that combine “the right

amount of water movement, temperature, and time of year.” Other factors are at play too. “We look for big bends and high rocks to slow the water down and create deep pools,” he says.

A host of lakes are listed, including one in Lassen Volcanic National Park and Tahoe’s Emerald Bay, as well as a natural mineral bath and various hot springs in Calistoga, Bishop, Long Valley, Bridgeport, and beyond. Clements notes that “each destination embodies a specific character, culture, and landscape of the region.” As the pair make their way south, they bolster the volume’s saltwater entries. A number of idyllic beaches along the coast make the cut, from La Jolla’s white sands and Laguna’s Treasure Island Beach tide pools to the rocky headlands of Malibu’s Point Dume and Sunny Cove in Santa Cruz, a place SeitchikReardon calls “a true neighborhood beach” that he has continued to visit for more than 20 years. •

It seems the appetite for Italian American restaurants never abates. SAL’S PLACE joins in from the other coast, specifically Provincetown, Massachusetts, at the tip of Cape Cod. The original, founded in 1975, has a casual, bohemian vibe moderated with plenty of red sauce and parmigiana. At the new WeHo outpost, owner Siobhán Carew is going for a similar local-hangout feel. A decade after closing DTLA’s Rivera and going home to New Mexico, John Sedlar is behind the stoves at ZOZO, a new La Brea district spot he has opened with partner Bill Chait. Inside the French homeware store Maison Midi, Zozo’s menu jumbles together southern France, Spain, Italy, and the Middle East. Start with handmade tortillas pressed with fresh flowers, Jerusalem hummus with za’atar, or escargots with jamón ibérico. The larger Abiquiu lamb with chayote chutney or scallops with sea beans and hoja santa are meant to share. Santa Barbara’s Funk Zone pulls in the crowds for casual eats, but high-end omakase is a first. Lennon Silvers Lee has never been to Japan, but he fell in love with the delicate artistry of nigiri while cheffing around SoCal in his early 20s. “Almost in the blink of an eye,” he says, “I became a full-blown sushi chef and my career clicked.” At 26 he opened Sushi|Bar in Montecito with his restaurateur brother, Phillip Frankland Lee. Two years later it earned a Michelin star, one of Santa Barbara’s first. At the new SILVERS OMAKASE, the 29-year-old chef focuses exclusively on a seasonal 14-course menu for just 10 guests at a time. His rice comes from the Doyuuno farm in Japan’s Toyama prefecture. Billion of dollars of fresh tracks, tunnels, and monorail will arrive by 2028, and the COUNTDOWN STARTS NOW

Picture it: a balmy evening on July 14, 2028. An astonishing 70,000 people packed into the LA Memorial Coliseum roar to a crescendo as the Olympic cauldron is lit, kicking off a month of competitions that will play out across the greater Los Angeles area — along with a peppering of events further afield in the state. Millions of people will flood into Southern California for the Olympics and Paralympic Games, a mammoth event that will be “the equivalent of seven Super Bowls every day for 30 days,” according to Casey Wasserman, the sports superagent and chairman of Chairman LA 2028. And all this activity in a city known for its soul-crushing gridlock, creaking infrastructure, and crisis-level population of unhoused people. What could possibly go wrong?

Although 2028 sounds far away, the city is working to prepare the ground for what it has pledged will be a “car-free” affair. That means huge upgrades and extensions to the Metro System, an influx of almost 3,000 buses to shuttle people from event to event in special bus lanes, and dramatically expanded airport capacity to handle the masses.

The Olympic legacy for host cities is, at best, mixed. Athens, which hosted the 2004 Games, notoriously lost billions of dollars and was left with an array of fetid unused pools, weedstrewn stadiums, and crumbling infrastructure it had frantically erected for the Games. Decay set in almost as soon as the torch was extinguished and the world turned away its attention.

Los Angeles is far better positioned, not least because it will have had more than a decade to prepare. The International Olympic Committee broke with history in 2017 when it named Paris as the winner of the 2024 Games, but awarded the subsequent Olympics and Paralympics to Los Angeles at the same time. What’s more, virtually all the venues in Los Angeles are already built, meaning the tricky question of what to do with newly constructed stadiums after the Games is not a concern. The Intuit Dome, future home of the Los Angeles Clippers, will open this summer and is set to serve as the primary basketball

venue. Sofi Stadium, home of the NFL’s Rams and Chargers, will host parts of the opening and closing ceremonies, along with the Coliseum. Gymnastics will be based at the Kia Forum, the Honda Center in Anaheim will host volleyball, and soccer will mostly be at BMO Stadium, home of LAFC and the Rose Bowl. That said, the city has its work cut out, mostly remaking how people move around. Last year Angelenos lost, on average, close to four days — 90 hours, the second-highest rate in the U.S. — sitting in rush-hour traffic. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority has laid out an ambitious “Vision 2028” plan to double the use of transport options other than

solo driving in the next four years. This includes ramping up mass transit ridership, walking, biking, ride-sharing, and carpooling. A critical piece of the puzzle is the $9.5 billion extension of the Metro purple D line from Wilshire/Western

— Westwood/UCLA and Westwood/VA Hospital — set to open in 2027, months before the Games. The latter is critical because UCLA will provide housing for virtually all the athletes and coaches. International media will stay at USC’s student housing. The city will also rent an extra 5,000 buses that, theoretically, will bypass the worst of the traffic via special bus lanes.

A dramatic overhaul of the city’s primary airport is also steaming ahead. The $15 billion megaproject includes a six-stop, 2.25-mile people-mover rail loop that connects the main terminal areas with the Metro, a new $1.5 billion car rental depot, and buses and other local transit options. In addition, four of the nine existing terminals have been renovated, or are in the process, at a combined cost of $4 billion. A $400 million addition

through Beverly Hills, Century City, UCLA, and Westwood, as well as another new line to connect to LAX. The latter is slated to open as soon as fall of this year.

The purple line, which has been plagued by hundreds of millions in cost overruns, hit a huge milestone in April when it finished tunneling work for the 9-mile, seven-station extension. Mayor Karen Bass said, “This safe completion of tunneling through this part of Los Angeles is a milestone in Metro’s work to expand fast and reliable public transit across the region.”

The Metro, however, is still working against the clock. The line will open stations in 3-mile chunks, with the last

LA 2028, the nonprofit organization charged with delivering the games, has secured all the funding and commercial deals required to meet the $6.8 billion budget for holding the Games. “There was no big plan,” says Adam Brown, describing the launch of Orlebar Brown, the London-based menswear line he founded. Rather, he notes, “there was a particular moment.” Brown, a photographer who was traveling in Rajasthan, India, during the summer of 2006, went from the pool to lunch wearing swim shorts and was asked to change before entering the restaurant. “It set me thinking, ‘I want a short I can swim in,’ nothing more dramatic than that,” he adds.

The next year, Orlebar Brown launched quick-drying tailored trunks in four lengths. The line has evolved to include key pieces centered around vacation essentials like polo shirts, linen blazers, smart trousers, and outerwear. Reworked Larson swim shoes designed for salt water and a sustainably sourced line of made-in-Italy sunglasses are new on the roster. “Everyone had swim as part of their collection, but they didn’t have swim at the center. That informed everything,” Brown says.

He credits Simon Long — the line’s design and collections director, who spent years at Paul Smith — with monitoring fit, fabric, and sourcing. “He knows the proper weight of merino and how men want things to fit,” Brown says. The trunks are

based on men’s bespoke trousers, and more than 60 elements go into the construction of each pair. The company worked to make shorts sustainably and is moving toward B-corp targets. “To wear our shorts, you’re probably on an airplane, on a road, it’s not lost on me. It’s a central part of all the conversations we have. But if we don’t travel and experience other places, we’re just narrower people,” Brown says.

With a newly opened Montecito boutique joining an already established location in Beverly Hills, Brown, who is just back from The Ashram in Calabasas, is reminded that he tested some of the line’s first samples while visiting Venice Beach years ago. In the decade since I first met Kiernan Shipka and we decorated cupcakes together at a bakery on Melrose Avenue, she has gone from child star, playing the petulant Sally Draper in Mad Men, to a charming, funny, and surprisingly (given the precedent for child stars) untroubled and self-actualized young woman — not to mention a hugely successful actor.

Sitting in Cafe Gratitude in L.A.’s Larchmont neighborhood, we’re talking about adulthood — how you know when you’re in it and what it means to have responsibility for your own life and your own happiness. “Lately I’ve been thinking about who I was when I was younger and the parts of me that I want to hold on to and bring into my life now,” she says.

It’s clear that Shipka bonds easily. She’s bright, engaging, and quick witted. I find myself laughing with her as I would with a dear friend. In fact, she tells me, comedy is the genre she currently feels most drawn to, explaining, “I lived in drama for such a long time that to be funny and to be free in that kind of way, and improvisational, right now it’s something I’ve been thinking about a lot.”

This lightness and playfulness is all part of embodying her best grown-up self. Where it has gone wrong for many child stars is feeling too mature too soon, and being thrust into an adult world before being ready to deal with it.

“I’ve known Gia for a long time,” Shipka explains, “and we were itching to work with each other.” She calls Coppola an amazing director who is calm, impeccably organized, and so trusting of her actors. “She really knows what she wants, and she’s clear and concise and stands back and lets it all unfold.”

Shipka has worked nonstop since she was 6 years old, but far from being jaded, the young actor seems energized by the experience. “When I shot Sabrina, those hours and demands weren’t anything I’d ever

this really, sort of wild energy” that she tries to relocate in herself whenever life feels too serious or stressful.

She lives in “a guesthouse situation” in her parents’ home, which suits her perfectly. Her father, John, is a real estate developer, and she calls her mother her greatest role model.

“My parents are my friends now,” she says. “They were so wonderful with me as a kid, as I was in this situation they had no blueprint for. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned to respect that and love them not just as the people who take care of me and protect me and make sure I’m OK, but that it’s a two-way street, and I’m there for them too. I feel like we’re learning from each other, and it’s really beautiful.”

“By 15 I had done a lot that felt very adult,” she says. “I had a job and certain levels of responsibility, but the difference in actually being an adult is experiencing the spectrum of human emotion. Getting hit with all these feelings that you’ve never felt before. Being emotionally vulnerable and real and actually forming connections with other people and my relationship to myself.”

Shipka is now 24, and after bagging the lead in four seasons of Netflix’s teen drama Sabrina (a remake of the ’90s show Sabrina the Teenage Witch), she has already shone in a number of film roles that span genres from campy horror Totally Killer to tender melodrama Wildflower. She has just wrapped a trio of films, a follow-up to the 1996 action movie Twister (which stars Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar Jones), action thriller Red One opposite Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, and Gia Coppola’s third feature, The Last Showgirl, starring Pamela Anderson (as the dancer) and Jamie Lee Curtis, last year’s Best Supporting

done before. That was definitely a learning curve. How do I not get burned out? How do I show up every single day the best version of myself? What can I do for self-care? But I’ve figured out how to take care of myself and what I like to do to rest and recoup.”

Therapy, journaling, self-help books (The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks is a favorite), and getting back to the “essence and spirit” of her childhood have helped. She tells me there’s a particular family photograph of her at 4 or 5 that shows the “playfulness, spunkiness…just

Shipka turned 21 during the pandemic, when Hollywood sets were empty and there was plenty of time for introspection and a transition of sorts. “It was only when a lot of the world started to come back to life when I started to feel like I was an adult in the world,” she says. She soon fell into a new group of friends, actors, writers, and producers, a group where “the common theme is usually some sense of creativity.” She’s still in touch with John Hamm and January Jones, her on-screen parents in seven seasons of Mad Men , and they see one another for a night out a couple of times a year.

How does she think her friends would describe her? “Fun. I would hope a good friend. I think down for an adventure always and looking to have real conversations.” Shipka has traveled the world promoting her work and attending fashion shows and events (she’s been a face of Nina Ricci fragrances). She still loves exploring new places and says, “I’m trying to get more adventurous because L.A. is such a great place to travel within your own city. Whenever I have the travel bug, I have to remind myself that I can actually exercise it here by just driving 30 minutes to be in a completely new place, experiencing a restaurant that I’ve never been to.”

She’s much more of a dinner-and-drinks kind of person than a big partier, and she loves an evening at the Sunset Tower bar. “I would rather sit at a table with my good friends and actually talk about stuff that feels real than go to a really loud place where we lose ourselves,” she says. They frequent a steady rotation of restaurants in West Hollywood, their “Central Perks,” named after the

On a heavy-clouded Santa Barbara morning, Whitney Wolfe Herd and Michael Herd open the heavyset doors leading into their traditional Spanish courtyard. The two square mirrored fountains are bubbling, rosemary lines the shaded patios, and a hint of woodsmoke mingles in the air with the damp fresh smell of green leaves. Already you’re in another world, one of 1845 adobes, olive trees, widow’s walks, and wisteria winding down porches, with a patch of deep blue sea in the distance and craggy mountains to the north. Ask the couple how they found their house and you can almost hear them exhale in bliss. When Whitney walked into the lush, tropical grounds of their Montecito summer home in 2022, she says, “It felt very spiritual — and that’s what I needed at this chapter in my life.”

For a decade, the pages had been turning rapidly for Whitney. The Salt Lake City native cofounded the dating app Tinder in Los Angeles, extricated herself from that organization in 2014, and moved to Austin, Texas, where she developed and founded its hyper-successful competitor Bumble. Centered on femaleempowered relationships and kindness, the app lets straight women contact men first — a major innovation in the space at the time. Whitney then expanded to other offerings, including friendship and professional networking. The company became an even bigger success, going public in 2021 and reaching 1.9 million

paying users at the end of 2022, which translated to $1.1 billion in annual revenue. It was the fast-paced life of a CEO of a publicly traded company: earnings calls, quarterly shareholder meetings, and board dynamics.

Meanwhile, in her personal world, she had married Texan Michael, whom she met skiing in Aspen, and had two young boys, Bobby and Henry. When her sons were 3 and almost 1, “I looked in the mirror and I was like, ‘OK. I have 10 years behind me of grind. No sleep, no health. What am I doing?’” she says.

Enter the house. Originally built in 1845 on San Leandro Ranch, the adobe has changed hands many times, even serving as a dairy farm, before being built out in 1917 by insurance executive, polo lover, and Ennisbrook nomenclator Herbert C. Cox as well as subsequent owners, including Ellen DeGeneres. Today two classic fountains bisect a traditional Spanish-style courtyard, enclosed on three sides by the original adobe and two similarly styled buildings. Turnout pastures and an arena frame the southern side of the property. Small outdoor eating areas are tucked in every nook and cranny. Whitney had seen the hacienda online years before and added it to her mood board. It had seemed like a nice daydream, she recalls. When it went back on the market, a friend called and said, “This is the perfect house for you and Michael.”

Tucked away in the folksy Ennisbrook neighborhood of Montecito next to a 44-acre preserve, it felt like a “magical,

mystical escape, where you could meditate under a tree,” she says. It was exactly what she had been craving after “living on an airplane for eight years.”

But it wasn’t just the charm of the Old California home that appealed to Whitney: She knew that to get her husband on board, horses were key. Michael is about as close to a real-life cowboy as you can get. Hailing from an oil and gas family in Tyler, Texas, he spent most of his weekends on his grandparents’ quail ranch. “You know the show Dallas?” he asks. “Every oil and gas man has a quail ranch.” On weekends Michael worked with an old cowboy (aptly named Hollis) to build out his grandparents’ property. They constructed roads and fences and spent hours doing manual labor; Hollis also taught him how to “rope and ride.” Michael went on to compete in rodeos throughout his college years at Texas Tech and continues to compete today.

When Whitney showed Michael the property, his reaction was equally enthusiastic. To find a property where stables are so close to the house is rare anywhere, they explain, particularly in Montecito. Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi were selling the house for the second time. They had bought in 2017 for $7 million and sold it to Tinder cofounder Sean Rad for $11 million; in 2021, Rad sold the ranch back to DeGeneres for $14.3 million. This time the house was on the market for $21 million. Would Whitney be the second Tinder cofounder to buy that house?

The Herds didn’t hesitate and haven’t looked back. “I went from living in the future — chasing the next greatest innovation, high pace, high frequency,” Whitney says. “This felt old-world.” When they walk into their kitchen their view of the ocean isn’t from a giant glass box, Michael points out, but a simple rectangle, which feels timeless: “It makes you realize that you’re here for a short time, and you have to savor every moment.”

Between Us. “A group of girls came for La Scala salad [one of Whitney’s favorites from the L.A. eatery] and learned about how to tap into our inner knowing and how to channel things,” she says. “We don’t have many serious or traditional events. This is not a ladies-who-lunch home. We gather, hang, and tell stories.”

And her two boys, now ages 4 and 2, run wild. Every morning, they get up at five o’clock, play together for a while, and go outside to pick flowers for their mother. It’s a romantic gesture, which is ironic considering Whitney is considered a feminist dating-app innovator and she’s “engulfed in boyland.” Even the three Quarter horses and three Labrador retrievers are boys.

“We can’t get our 2-year-old off the horse,” Whitney says. Most afternoons they load their Quarter horses in a trailer and drive five minutes to Loon Point Beach, where the whole family can ride along the water. That in itself was a turning point. Although her Californian mother, Kelly, played polo and her sister, Danielle, was an equestrian, Whitney always preferred to sit in the car and read rather than go out riding because she was allergic. She hadn’t really been on a horse until she met Michael, she admits. “I got her on the horse when I proposed to her, though,” he says.

The property’s collection of buildings also adds a village-like feel. One structure houses a primary living area and a main kitchen; another building has the laundry, playroom, and a second kitchen. Still another edifice fits a movie theater and a guest wing.

The Herds spend lots of time curled up in front of the fireplace reading, enjoying family dinners, cooking at home, playing cards, and having lunches with friends. The vibe is comfortable and classic but not too formal. Whitney likes Loro Piana fabrics and clothing, Paris (she attended sixth grade in the City of Light), quality over quantity, a little equestrian flair. The decor needs to have the “kind of furniture the kids can make forts with and the cushions will fit when you put them back,” she says, laughing.

“And now I’m really into it,” Whitney answers, almost surprised. “Horses are empowering. You have to trust them and have confidence because if you are scared, they freak out. They’re incredibly therapeutic, healing. They’re old souls.”

A year after the couple bought the home, Whitney was able to realize every entrepreneur’s dream of handing off the company role of CEO and becoming board chair. She selected former Slack CEO and technologist Lidiane Jones as her successor. “It’s how the story was supposed to go,” she says.

Becoming chair has opened up opportunities for her to be creative as she helps Bumble expand, and perhaps tell her story in a new format and focus on philanthropy for women’s issues. Meanwhile, her success story has captured the imagination of others; a new movie centered on her life story and the building of Bumble will star actress Lily James. “I don’t quite know how to feel about that,” she muses. “We’ll see it when everyone else does.” Her husband is equally busy in the philanthropic department, running his family’s foundation (which supports higher education, health, and human services) and the family office, and of course competing in team roping (a rodeo event in which two riders rope horses in tandem) in Texas and Colorado. As usual, it all works.

“We’re so yin and yang,” Whitney says. “I’ve been living behind a computer screen for 10 years.”

“And my life has been so offline,” Michael adds.

“It’s a beautiful balance,” she says. •

It’s been 10 years since ISABEL MARANT brought her unique brand of Parisian chic to California. Here, she shares why Golden State style will always be an enduring source of inspiration

The list of activities

Parisian designer and perennial cool girl Isabel Marant does not have time for, literally and figuratively, is quite long.

It starts with covering her gray hair, which she’s wearing in a messy bun. “I don’t have time to sit in a chair looking at myself in a mirror for hours, talking about stupid things,” she says with a laugh and a dismissive wave.

Also on the list: Elaborate makeup, which she is trying to avoid before an afternoon photo shoot, and long, drawn-out work lunches. Which is how Marant, 57, ended up sitting on a rock in the Judy Kameon–designed

modern cactus garden in front of her Melrose Place store, eating a bagel from the Yeastie Boys truck straight out of the wrapper.

Leisurely visits to California are also rare. Marant hasn’t been to Los Angeles since the Franklin Azzi–designed store opened in 2013. She has been lured back to town to celebrate the 2024 Fashion Trust emerging design talent winner with fellow judges Maria Cornejo and Phillip Lim, and to present the accessories award to handbag designer Esha Soni. Marant’s own business has mushroomed in the decade since the opening of her shop drew its own star-studded crowd.

“I have [more than] 80 stores now all around the globe,” she says, including one at South Coast Plaza and one in Palisades

Village. “And new collections to design every five minutes. So my work doesn’t allow me to travel around like that. It’s sad because this store is still my favorite. It’s probably a good thing I don’t have time to shop for vintage furniture here because I’d want to buy it all.” It took a force of nature to get Marant to come to Los Angeles the first time, when a volcanic eruption in Iceland grounded 100,000 flights to Europe for several days in 2010. During that trip she first visited the tree-lined street, arguably the most European block in the city sprawl, and helped turn it into one of the chicest shopping destinations in the world.

“I was in New York and I couldn’t fly home to France, so I came the other direction, to Los Angeles,” she says. “We were already

planning a shop here, so I said, ‘Why not?’ I totally fell in love.”

Fans of Marant’s 35-year-old sexy, sporty, streetwear-influenced brand might be surprised to learn the designer doesn’t spend more time in Southern California. Season after season, she leans heavily on influences that are abundant on the West Coast, like surf and skate culture, Western wear, and irreverent tomboy touches.

“I started out making jewelry back in 1989 and making my own clothes, redesigning my father’s old things,” she says. “Then I focused on knitwear. But I didn’t have my first runway show until 1994 or ’95. I was very committed to making ready-to-wear clothes; in a very true sense focusing on my clients, who were my friends, and what they wanted to wear. Not the version of fashion you see on the runway. That’s still true today.”

Her fall collections in particular feel tailor-made for the climate, using lightweight fabrics like cotton voile and silk and cozy knits to address that nagging 70°F-winterday problem. Her expansion into menswear five years ago, with gender-neutral printed sweats and logo T-shirts, is right in step with the L.A. streetwear scene. Even her dressiest pieces tend to have a tomboy edge, and she was one of the first designers to elevate that Cali staple, the high-top sneaker.

pilot turned architect who spotted a plateau in the forest from the sky and decided to build a small enclave of Neutra-inspired homes there. Their time in nature feels more like Big Sur than Côte d’Azur.

“Since Tal was a baby, we had a cabin in the countryside with no electricity or running water. We’d spend all our weekends there. He is a nature boy,” she says. “Now we bring friends and have big dinners and play cards. We rest. He rides his motorbike. We swim in the river and kayak.” Could it sound more Californian?

Marant also has an ageless approach to personal style, which many of her local devotees can appreciate. Today she’s wearing a beaded miniskirt, a T-shirt, a vintage Boy Scout shirt, sandals, and bold pink aviator sunglasses — not the choices a woman nearing retirement age would typically make.

“There’s a sporty vibe in California that I’ve always loved,” she says. “It’s a very easy, sunny, and cozy vibe, but it’s also quite dressy. I think our clothes correspond very well to California and to the L.A. scene specifically. It really makes sense here.”

Marant’s hobbies and interests also hint that her distinctly Parisian exterior conceals an unpretentious California heart. For starters, she’s a modern architecture lover and admires the work of Richard Neutra in particular.

“I was so happy some years ago when I went to a Neutra-designed home up on Mulholland Drive,” she says. “Vidal Sassoon’s wife invited me. Noguchi did the garden by the pool. It’s an amazing place. It’s tiny, and everything is preserved and kept perfectly.”

Back home, she escapes the city for beach vacations in Ibiza and quiet family weekends at her modern retreat in the country near Paris with her husband, handbag designer Jerome Dreyfuss, and their 20-year-old son, Tal, who studies metalworking at art school. Their house was built in the ’60s by a former

“For me there are no rules in fashion, and since my 20s I haven’t changed my way of dressing,” she says, pulling out a pack of Fortunas, no-smoking ordinances be damned. “It’s about how you feel and living your own way. Sometimes my son will say, ‘Oh, Mommy, you’re not young enough anymore for this skirt.’ But come on, I’ve got good legs. I can do it. And even if I didn’t have good legs and it pleased me to wear these things, why not? For me it’s about being yourself and accepting who you are and about saying yes to things that make you happy.”

She continues: “I think beauty comes also from feeling at ease with yourself. That’s what I try to help women understand. We’re not going to be young forever, so you have to be prepared.” She laughs. “Sometimes I look at the young girls, and I think, ‘Wow.’ We had our time, and now we’re at another stage of our lives, and we have to feel good about it.”

Given that she’s already living the lifestyle, it makes one wonder if she’d ever consider trading in her hotel stays at Chateau Marmont for a more permanent place of her own here. But the answer is an unequivocal no.

“I’m French,” she says, drawing the syllable out in a way that’s very, well, French. “When I came here for the first time, I wanted to live here. I was so excited by the modernism, architecture, all the many places to buy amazing furniture, by the sunshine. It’s a dream. But it’s so far. My culture is in France. My family is there, and my friends.” She pauses for a nanosecond to consider the possibilities. “If I could move everyone I love out here with me? Maybe,” she adds, and lets out a smoky laugh. •

It was Praya Lundberg’s mother who put her in touch with her future husband, Vietnamese businessman Quoc Cao. But with the actress in Los Angeles and Quoc continents apart, they connected during the pandemic over the phone, eventually developing a friendship and sharing poems, hopes, and dreams. “We were able to get to know each other slowly, the old-fashioned way,” says Praya.

Once travel resumed and Quoc arrived in L.A. for frequent visits, Praya brought him to her favored haunts. He, in turn, brought her to Rome — a place dear to Praya as the first foreign city her Thai mother visited (her father is a former Swedish diplomat) — and proposed. “My dream when planning my wedding one day was to wear a gown made by the house of Valentino and designed by Pierpaolo in Rome,” says Praya.

The Italian lace veil inspired Pierpaolo Piccioli, Valentino’s creative director at the time, to suggest the Alexandre Desplat song “Snow in the Garden” to accompany Praya and her father down the aisle. She did just that amid a cascade of white roses and Italian-inspired columns set in the lush gardens of Hotel Bel-Air. “It was my Italian wedding dream,” Praya says.

The reception was a variation on the floral theme. “A dome of white roses and wild smilax contained twinkling lights,” says Lisa Lafferty, Praya’s friend and planner. “The entrance tunnel and table florals were a mix of white roses, ranunculus, hellebore,

lilacs, tulips, lisianthus, and hyacinths.”

Even the towering cake was draped in white peonies. Praya and Quoc created custom China settings with their wedding monogram in gold for the reception to double as their daily dishes at their new L.A. home. “We had the plates hand-washed and dried the night of the wedding and returned to their new home for use — all 1,250 pieces!” says Lafferty.

With the Hotel Bel-Air nuptials preceded by a welcome party at Nobu Malibu and a rehearsal dinner at the Sunset Tower, guests got a tour of all the places Praya had taken Quoc while they dated, and the after-party was held in an ephemeral speakeasy on-site at the hotel. “Being an actress myself, it felt fitting to revel in that Old Hollywood glamour that I love so much,” says Praya. •

When a couple from New York met with wedding planner

Danielle Tolleson Williams, founder of Elise Events, to discuss their Lake Tahoe nuptials, they had one wish: “They really wanted the wedding to feel like an elevated dinner party,” says the San Francisco–born Williams of their elegant but approachable vision. “It was important to continually go back to these roots when designing and making decisions,” adds Williams, who began the design process back in summer 2022 once the couple settled on the venue.

With a backdrop like Martis Camp, a luxury ski and golf community set on a breathtaking landscape of towering pines and meadows in Truckee — where the couple had formed fun-filled memories of golfing and skiing together over the years — the possibilities were endless. Luckily, the bride and her mother already knew what they wanted, making the process streamlined. “My most important ‘must’ were the flowers,” says the mother of the bride, who worked closely with Williams and floral designer Mindy Rice. “[The bride] emphasized the importance of the color scheme dominated by tons of lavender and blue,” says Rice, who began carefully selecting seasonal blooms to

create a garden-like feel throughout. Fast-forward one year to a warm September weekend where 120 friends and family members gathered amid a sea of ranunculus, delphinium, and clematis to witness the couple exchange their vows surrounded by sweeping views of Martis Valley. As cocktail hour concluded, guests headed down to the candlelit greenhouse where they dined under a starlit sky and enjoyed live music.

“We loved the idea of bringing the outdoors in,” says Williams of the striking interior, which featured soft banquettes, rustic light fixtures, and a grand bar. “Mindy and I wanted to create a residential feel to the space, almost as if you walked into a swanky restaurant in New York.”

The entire day incorporated myriad thoughtful details, including a locket with a sentimental photo that was attached to the base of the bridal bouquet and handwritten notes the couple left at each guest’s place setting. “The notes were such a special touch and ended up being my favorite detail,” says the bride.

Late-night revelers enjoyed espresso martinis, bowling, and danced to tunes by Brian Hess Music. “There was a ‘pinch-me’ moment during dinner,” says Williams. “The sun was starting to set and the candlelight was magical in the structure, [and] as I watched the couple and their friends and family enjoy the labor of love that went into producing this wedding, I knew we had hit their first ask right on the head!” •

Kate Friedman and Oscar Weis grew up 10 blocks away from each other in Santa Monica, but they didn’t meet until a mutual friend hosted a dinner party in New York City in 2017, when they discovered that they had each moved to N.Y. by coincidence. “I remember locking eyes with Oscar as soon as I stepped out of the cab,” says Kate, who knew she had found the one over a weekend getaway with friends in Southampton six months later. “Right away he felt like my human CBD,” recalls the freelance copywriter. “He has the most calming presence and made me feel so safe and centered.” Five years later, while on a vacation in Milos, Greece, Oscar, who heads marketing at a San Francisco start-up, popped the question on a secluded beach, followed by

a boat ride and a private beachside dinner.

With that, the couple wed last October before 175 guests at Thacher House in the Ojai Valley. The property — which consists of a main house and three cottages set amid olive groves and lavender fields roamed by chickens and goats — is a nod to the groom’s mother, celebrated English interior designer Kathryn M. Ireland, whose 1740s farmhouse in the French countryside was where Oscar spent summers as a child. They were also lucky enough to receive pointers from Ireland: “I frequently sought input from her on designrelated topics,” says the bride, who infused familial elements into the events including the tablecloths and chuppah, which were sourced from Otis Textiles, a line of fabrics founded by Ireland and Oscar’s brother Otis.

dinner lit in the romantic glow of candles among dusty pink floral arrangements and bowls of overflowing fruit. “We loved the idea of a European-esque family-style meal that felt like one big dinner party,” says Kate. The newlyweds opened the floor with their first dance to “Lightning” by Cannons. “It came on the stereo as we were driving around Milos the day we got engaged,” recalls Kate. “When I heard the lyrics, I cried because it captured exactly how I feel about Oscar.” At the end of the night, the pair were — to no one’s surprise — the last two on the dance floor. “I’m not sure if anything will ever top that moment for us,” says Kate. “It was the most fun dance party we could have dreamed of.” •

As for relationships, despite being linked in the past to musician John Mayer and another Coppola scion, filmmaker Christian, Shipka tells me she’s single. “The older I get and the more I get to know myself, the more exciting the prospect of having a partner in crime is. When I was younger, I felt like it was all about dating. But my recent journey has been much more inward. And the stronger I feel, the more that I’m drawn to having deeper friendships. Connecting with people has been more exciting to me lately.”

Having this anchor to herself as well as a trusted group of good friends has helped Shipka navigate a life in the spotlight. A generation has watched her grow up on TV, as Sally and then Sabrina, and viewers might feel they have some kind of claim to her personal life. She admits “seeing mean things about me online is not great, that’s for sure,” but adds, “I’m lucky I can feel the ouch and then pretty quickly have a good system of people around me to remind me that it’s not real life.”

The idea of getting older isn’t daunting for her, having learned from the likes of the “wonderful” Jean Smart of Hacks fame in Wallflower as well as Jamie Lee Curtis in The Last Showgirl . “I have so many examples of phenomenal, dynamic women doing things at all ages. To me it’s key to be excited about each stage I’m in, and not let it pass me by because I’m worried about a future one.”

“Watching [Curtis] command the set and seeing what she did — I took endless lessons away from it in such a short amount of time. These women make me want to up my game to a level of wanting to not only be at my best at a given moment but also pursue an approach to performing for the rest of my life that feels like it’s conducive to the freest, most powerful, creatively charged version of itself.”

Shipka would love to follow Coppola and try her hand at writing and directing. Given her style credentials, would she ever want

to do something beyond modeling in the fashion world? “I’ve been in that world for a long time and I’m very, very inspired by it,” she says. “I’m really in awe of people who are doing amazing things, such as [Californian gender-fluid designer] Harris Reed. It just feels like a great gift in others, which is probably where it stays for right now.” She pauses, then adds, “But you never know. I never want to cut myself off creatively. That idea of putting myself in a box is not appealing to me.”

I wonder where Kiernan Shipka will be in a decade. In L.A. still, she’s sure of that. But everything else — kids, relationships — is “up in the air…I have come to the realization that gripping onto expectations is just the death of the moment — and stifling creatively.”

Wise words for a 24-year-old with a whole lifetime ahead of her. •

The goal, however, is to use the Games to catalyze lasting improvements for Los Angeles; to be, in a way, the anti-Athens. And there is precedent. The 1984 Games yielded a $233 million surplus, much of which was used to fund the LA84 Foundation, an organization that built youth sports programs and facilities across the city. It continues to operate today.

The 2028 Games will be far larger, with more events, more venues, and more visitors. So although the risks are higher, so too is the prize. Wasserman said recently: “The real legacy is the economic legacy. If we can create a surplus, that surplus stays to benefit the city forever. When you have an event of this size and this scale, it is a great line in the sand to get the city motivated and focused on being at its best when the world comes here.” •

The seven-time Olympic gold swimmer shares her favorite spots in the state where she studied

Where do you live?

I primarily live in Gainesville, Florida, now. It’s where I train, so it’s also where I spend the most time. I lived in California for five years while I went to Stanford University.

Where do you feel most zen?

I feel calmest when I am in the pool. It’s a place where I get to be with my teammates while also focusing on my goals. I love the feeling of being in the water.

Favorite swim spot?

Avery Aquatic Center at Stanford. It’s where I trained while studying there, so I have lots of great memories.

Favorite relaxing getaway? Coronado, California. My family

vacationed there when I was younger. And the sunsets are unforgettable.

Favorite drive?

I love driving across the Golden Gate Bridge because it’s scenic from both directions: You get stunning views of the San Francisco Bay or the mountains in Marin. It’s exhilarating to drive across such an iconic landmark.

Favorite health food fix?

I love all kinds of berries!

Where do you take visiting friends?

In California, I would take them to the farmers’ market in Menlo Park or the Filoli Historic House & Garden in Woodside.

Favorite music to help you relax? Let It Be by the Beatles and Sounds of Silence by Simon and Garfunkel. It’s music I was around a lot growing up, and I loved playing my favorite tunes on the piano, so it feels like home.

Favorite podcast?

Of course my favorite podcast is going to be all about sports. I love Laughter Permitted With Julie Foudy. It is funny and has thoughtful and candid conversations with athletes and other interesting personalities.

Where will you vacation after Paris 2024?

I am looking forward to visiting relatives in New York, North Dakota, Montana, and Utah.
