wedding is, by nature, a classic affair. And yet each season, just when I think it’s not possible to reinvent the wheel again, a slew of innovative brides, grooms, planners and tastemakers convince me otherwise—rethinking the cake (in a nude version, no less— see Jennifer Musty’s unfrosted wonder on p.71), the dress (more than one of our featured brides joined Solange Knowles in embracing the cape this season) and the tabletop (think original
works of art by Konstantin Kakanias, as seen on p.63). This issue, like all of our wedding issues, is intended to balance utility with fantasy; offering time-honored guidance and serving as a barometer of the latest and greatest in the Golden State’s wedding world. We’ve set our sights on all things prep; compiling a beauty calendar (p.60) tailored to distinct goals with a 12-month lead time to get you there; mock registries at Barneys New York (p.64) curated by Mary McDonald and Kyle Irwin; and a bridal style grid (p.40) that cross-references your fashion leanings with everything from venues to party favors. When it comes to inspiration, on the other hand, I believe there’s no better way to start imagining your perfect day than by appreciating those of others, so we’ve selected a varied crop of real weddings guaranteed to appeal to every aesthetic—from Laura Vassar and Kristo-

It goes without saying that it’s the people that make your day—the magic is having those closest to you in one place to share in that surreal moment where you commit to the one you love. But those extra details: the gold-leaf rose headband; the ’70s cover band; the artisanal donut wall? That’s the fun part—what translates who you are as a couple into what your day

The June nuptials of Tyler Ellis and Benjamin Shriner, who split their time between New York and Ellis’ native L.A., made an enduring sartorial statement. The daughter of the late designer Perry Ellis called on Raf Simons to create her Dior haute couture gown in Paris, which took almost 1,000 hours to complete. As for Shriner, designer Michael Bastian lined the groom’s tux with a vintage Perry Ellis textile. “It was definitely the most glamorous day of my life. Raf is a true genius,” says Ellis.

os Angeles designer Rory Beca feels your bridesmaids’ pain: “Every woman has a story of buying an overpriced, too-tight, strapless dress that they gave to Goodwill after years of it collecting dust in their closet,” she says. As an antidote to the one-and-done problem, Beca, who is known for her breezy array of exotically patterned maxi dresses, teamed with celebrity wedding planner Yifat Oren to launch Maid, a new collection that promises a return on investment. The line (which has already been modeled at the Oren-orchestrated nuptials of Adam Levine and Behati Prinsloo) features a variety of romantically draped silhouettes in double silk georgette in a palette of blush, magenta, royal blue, silver and onyx. The effect is California-cool in a way that can be dressed up for the big day or down for date nights (you may even want to borrow one for your honeymoon). “The idea of wearing a bridesmaid dress and then packing it for your next vacation sounds ideal to me,” says Beca. PERFECT TEN
Newlyweds Daphne Javitch and Pali Xisto Cornelsen.
Who made your dress? My dress was custom-made by Bill Bull (Vogue’s dressmaker/tailor). We would put the dress on for two minutes and then spend an hour gabbing about ’90s editorial. How did your personal style translate into your dress choice? My dress was completely aligned with my (dream) personal style—minimal, timeless, easy and elegant. What type of undergarments did you wear? I almost went without but was a little nervous about flash photography
so I wore a seamless nude thong. Do you have any undergarment tips for the big day? It depends on the dress, but the TEN bikini would be a cute “something blue.” What is your stance on the garter belt? I don’t have one, and my husband just asked what a garter belt is. What would be your fantasy honeymoon lingerie set? I spent more time packing lingerie for my honeymoon than clothes! I’m all about a pretty nightgown. That, or a vintage tee with cotton undies. tenundies.com.

find the perfect dress for her modern Indian wedding, she designed her own. But she didn’t stop there: Noting the void in the bridal market, Balakumar teamed up with Heather Green to launch Lakum,, a 25-piece collection dedicated to brides’ wedding weekend needs, from rehearsal dinner to after-party, as well as aisle-worthy gowns. “We designed Lakum for the modern bride who finds inspiration in the pages of high-fashion magazines and on the runway,” says New York–based Balakumar. “She is cosmopolitan and wants to bring her personal fashion aesthetic into her wedding-wear looks.” From $480; lakumcollection.com.

One of a Kind
A
visit to Ilan Trojanowski’s West Hollywood atelier usually yields more than its anticipated spoils. You may set out with the designer’s evil eye necklace in mind, but will also leave with the name of a miracle-working holistic doctor in Koreatown and a
fairytale-like anecdote about a rabbi with an aptitude for matchmaking. Such is the effect of an encounter with the charismatic French-Israeli talent, who launched his line, One Jewelry,, in January 2012 after forays as an antiquarian (he worked for his family’s business in Paris from the age of 16) and as a fashion buyer in L.A. “I grew up looking,” says Trojanowski, whose devoted clients include Zooey Deschanel and Nicole Richie. “So in everything I see, I also see the way it was made.” This intuitive sense for craftsmanship combined with an improvisational approach to geometric silhouettes translates to quietly remarkable yellow-, white- and rose-gold pieces encrusted with white and black diamonds. (See: the Kyra, a chunky architectural band topped with a sparkling pyramid; the Geller, a Deco-inspired cuff-shaped statement; or the Yael, a delicate lightning-bolt streak rendered in twinkling pavé.) Trojanowski, who is married to BCBGeneration Creative Director Joyce Azria, recently began accepting commissions for engagement and wedding rings, a collaborative process that comes naturally. “I was raised with sisters,” he explains. “I was into martial arts and basketball, but then I’d also be like, ‘Oooh, I like your ring!’” onejewelrylosangeles.com. Trojanowski (center) crafts intricate bands (top) and architectural rings (above) perfectly suited for the less-traditional bride.

beauty GET GLOWING
Joanna Czech, the specialist behind some of Hollywood’s most radiant complexions (Cate Blanchett and Kate Winslet are regulars) and La Mer’s global skincare adviser, offers tips on how to achieve a flawless visage from the inside out. 1 YEAR Purify your diet. Incorporate dark leafy greens and drink at least eight glasses of water per day. I like to follow Dr. Junger’s Clean Program. In six weeks you’ll see a dramatic difference in your skin and body, so keep it up until the big day. Begin a deep pore-cleansing facial (four treatments in the next month). I also recommend my diamond and sapphire peel married with LED light therapy. Use Biologique Recherche’s balancing exfoliators P50, P50V or P50W (depending on skin sensitivity) twice daily to maintain the epidermis’s acid pH. 11 MONTHS Schedule six to eight treatments of LED light therapy targeting hyperpigmentation, rosacea, dehydration and fine lines. 6 MONTHS Continue with monthly LED light therapy sessions combined with a hydrating facial massage [Czech favors La Mer’s The Concentrate]. At home, try Protective Nourishment’s Pumpkin Peel for its brightening qualities (it’s also great for breakouts and won’t irritate). For a body treatment, use Environ’s Derma-Lac Lotion and Vitamin A, C and E Body Oil after your shower at night for a youthful, toned glow. DAY BEFORE To reduce puffiness, drink water and snack on foods like apples and tomatoes to drain fluid from tissue. After getting a collagen or algae mask, get some sleep! joannaczech.com.

SHAPE UP
To get ready for the big day, Craig Balcom, senior program guide at The Ranch at Live Oak Malibu, devises a step-by-step regimen. BEFORE YOU BEGIN Get weighed and measured. Write your numbers down and your goal, and post on your refrigerator, then update your progress monthly. 1 YEAR Start walking: 45 minutes after lunch and 30 minutes after dinner. 9 MONTHS Simple is good—think: push-ups, sit-ups and squats. Pick one for Monday, one for Tuesday and one for Wednesday. Rest a day, then repeat. Set a goal of 100 reps per day. 6 MONTHS Try tennis, racquetball, basketball, swimming, hiking, biking, crosscountry skiing or surfing. Plan on at least an hour or two of being an athlete four to six times a week. 3 MONTHS Invest in a pedometer: Aim to take between 14,000 to 20,000 steps a day. Make sure to incorporate vertical steps (up hills or stairs) to get your heart rate up. 1 MONTH Stress will bulk you up, so try five minutes of deep breathing each morning, or yoga classes or meditation training. Find daily time for something you enjoy: Play music, read, write, paint or garden. 1 WEEK The wedding is all about you, so find balance and get grounded by doing something for others less fortunate. A good deed or two will do more for you than everything you have done thus far. DAY BEFORE Do as little as possible, and rest and laugh with friends. theranchmalibu.com.

Sisters and cookbook authors Heather Goldberg and Jenny Engel, founders of L.A.–based gourmet vegan food company Spork Foods, offer tips for healthy eating and provide a foolproof plan. 1 YEAR Ditch processed foods and incorporate cooked lentils or other beans into your diet (they have been shown to reduce belly fat). Choose whole grains like brown rice, instead of processed bread. Drink water throughout the day. It helps remove waste and maintain a healthy metabolism—spruce it up with some cucumber rings, fresh mint or berries. 9 MONTHS Increase the fat-burning foods in your diet. We make a spicy dressing with a few hot chilies, some olive oil, lemon juice, a dash of sea salt and pepper, and a touch of maple syrup to balance the heat. Blend and serve the mixture over your greens. 6 MONTHS Try a natural remedy for relaxation. Ours is kuzu pudding—kuzu is a root starch that is a known stress reducer. Whisk it into a pot with your favorite juice or some chocolate almond milk, and make a pudding by cooking it on medium heat for about three minutes. 3 MONTHS Now is the time to commit to the cleansing portion of your wedding prep. If you cut out dairy at this stage, chances are you’ll drop a few pounds. Almond milk is a delicious alternative, and the unsweetened variety has 30 calories per cup and no cholesterol. 1 MONTH Try eating more natural forms of healthy fats like avocado. 1 WEEK The week before the wedding can come with a lot of stress. Drink fresh peppermint tea. Peppermint relaxes you both through the aroma and the antioxidants in the mint. For a savory remedy, try basil oil to relieve a headache from strained or tense muscles. DAY OF Have a good breakfast such as oatmeal. Be sure to keep a lot of small, well-balanced snacks on hand, like hummus and veggies, mixed nuts or a small avocado roll to help regulate blood sugar. sporkfoods.com.

t Jennifer Musty’s Batter Bakery in San Francisco, the icing on the cake is, well, taking a back seat. Decadent frosted confections are making way for pared-back counterparts featuring fillings of seasonal fruit, soft caramel, decadent cream cheese and classic buttermilk. “We’ve seen people move away from traditional cakes towards rustic, fun-loving desserts that express the personalities of the couples,” says the accountant-turned-baker, who debuted her FiDi kiosk in 2009 and a brick-and-mortar spot in 2011. “The naked cakes align well with this less-formal, more playful and personal wedding style.” Known for infusing baked goods with outside-thebox flavor combinations, Musty is just one of the drivers behind this natural take on wedding sweets, which she favors in part not only for the frosting-to-cake ratio but also for the ability to highlight fresh fruit—a staple in her kitchen. “We source all of our produce from local farmers,” she says, “so I love to showcase it rather than hide it inside!” 2127 Polk St., S.F., 415-674-1069; batterbakery.com.

false start with now-husband James Bloomingdale,
reflected the destination in leather branded by the bride’s 86-year-
fifth-generation Angeleno and grandson of Betsy
old grandfather with a “BB” design—an homage to their last names
Bloomingdale. A friend suggested they connect,
and to Natalie’s father’s cattle ranch in Vernon, 5BB, where James
since Natalie lived in Dallas at the time, and
proposed. After the ceremony at the historic Shelton Chapel, the
James, head of acquisitions and senior vice president for JRK
nearly 500-strong party relocated to the Bullock Texas State History

Foo Fighters’ Nate Mendel and publicist Kate Jackson say “I do” in a music-filled fete in Coldwater Canyon Park

M
Y INITIAL IMPRESSION of Nate was that he was really smart and handsome but that he didn’t eat,” says Kate Jackson, founding partner of Grandstand Media & Management, of her first date with her now-husband, Foo Fighters bassist Nate Mendel. “I had to figure out how to be around a woman who I’m basically in awe of,” Nate recalls of his lack of appetite. Four years later, following another landmark dinner, this time at Mario Batali’s NYC mainstay Del Posto (Mendel was in town taping the band’s HBO series “Sonic Highways”), he popped the question. Nate had hired a musician to pose as a busker outside the restaurant and play the couple’s song, Gerry Rafferty’s “Right Down the Line”—as Kate listened in shock, he took a knee on the sidewalk. In October they wed at an outdoor amphitheater in Coldwater Canyon Park; the bride made her entrance in a caped Angel Sanchez gown, walking to a live performance of Stevie Nicks’ “Wild Heart” by Fleet Foxes’ guitarist Christian Wargo and manager Aja Pecknold. “I loved that we could see every single person’s face,” says Kate of the setup. For the reception, the pair tented the backyard of the Studio City home they share with Nate’s 10-year-old son, Noah, infusing the environs with, in Kate’s words, a “Hollywood goes on safari” sensibility. Bistro lights, lush garlands, Moroccan lanterns, Art Deco bars, and spherical vivid arrangements of roses, orchids, tulips and dahlias commingled to romantic effect. Entertainment for the night was a crowded bill: ’70s cover band The Goodtime Boys and The Kevin Large Band, a collection of the couple’s music buddies from Seattle shared the stage, while DJ Angel Salva took the last slot, cuing a finale in the form of “I’ll Believe in Anything” by Wolf Parade. “Our friends lifted us up and danced with us on their shoulders—that’s how we closed out the night,” says Kate. •

T’S PRETTY WELL understood that meeting your better half at a party in L.A. is like finding a needle in a haystack, but there are rare exceptions. Molly Fishkin and Asher Levin, two born-and-bred Angelenos, met the oldfashioned way—at the Beverly Hills Hotel’s 100th anniversary bash in 2012. A year and a half later, Asher, a producer/director, spontaneously proposed to Molly on the night of Yom Kippur with a ring he had been hiding in the cupboard. “I blacked out. I don’t even remember what he said on his knee,” Molly admits. Shortly after, she called childhood friends Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen of The Row, who insisted on gifting her a custom gown for the occasion. As for the location, Molly, a stylist, kept thinking back to shoots for Elle and Rolling Stone she had done at the historic Paramour Mansion in Silverlake. “It’s haunted, in a good way,” she says. “There’s taxidermy everywhere and every room is a different color, but there’s something about this place, I just fell so deeply in love with it.” Also known as the Canfield-Moreno Estate, the vista property was the perfect perch for the unique, untraditional affair. The day-of, Molly’s godmother, Stevie Nicks, surprised her with something blue: an heirloom sapphire ring. The Olsens helped the bride into her dress—a bohemian silhouette of breathable silk for the warm June night. Friend Jenna Caine sang Joni Mitchell’s “A Case of You” as Molly walked down the aisle to join Asher under a floral chuppah crafted by Richard Long. After an intimate ceremony in the ballroom, the 130 guests headed outside for the rustic reception, where Nicks gave a toast and performed “Landslide.” Cake and wine eventually ended up on Molly’s dress, but fortunately, friend Molly Guy of the line Stone Fox Bride brought a just-in-case option, which the bride wore for the last hour. The couple, who now live in Beverly Hills, returned to the pink-and-green palace to spend their first night together as husband and wife. •

HE SARTORIAL HIGHER powers were clearly at work bringing fashion plate Erica Pelosini and shoe designer Louis Leeman together. The pair met in Pelosini’s native Florence at the iconic Polimoda fashion institute. An international courtship ensued with a trip to Paris (where they lived before moving to L.A.), an engagement in St. Barths and, this past summer, a wedding in Capri. “Actually how we decided on a date was by looking to see when couture week ended in Milan,” says Pelosini, who decamped to the island with Leeman and 80 of their well-heeled friends— including Emilio Pucci’s Peter Dundas, who designed Erica’s wedding gown as well as the bridesmaids’ dresses. “I wanted a fairy-tale wedding, traditional [but] in my own way,” the bride explains. Friday night’s celebratory rehearsal dinner took place at the legendary Da Paolino, where long tables were strewn with lemons before the group danced the night away at Anema e Core. The next day, Pelosini gifted her bridesmaids custom Mary Katrantzou floral dresses for the bridal lunch (the couple also gave custom Louis Leeman espadrilles to each guest, inscribed with the wedding date). The rest of the afternoon was spent getting ready before the bridal party rode through the streets of Capri atop con-
verted construction buggies to the bucolic Certosa di San Giacomo. Erica walked down the aisle, which was covered in daisies, to a piano rendition of “Streets of Love” by The Rolling Stones. After the religious ceremony, guests released white balloons that were tied to the pews. Back at the J.K. Place hotel, an al fresco dinner was served under a full moon and a Baccarat chandelier that friend DJ Greg Boust had delivered from Le Baron in Paris. “The location was magic, above the sea with the view of the Faraglioni,” Pelosini recalls, referring to Capri’s iconic rock pinnacles. Friend Jake Rosenberg from The Coveteur was on hand to capture every fun-filled moment. In lieu of the traditional morning-after brunch, the group dined on seafood risotto at the famous Il Riccio Beach Club before heading out for a boat ride around the Bay of Naples. The next destination for these jet-setting Angelenos? Honeymooning in Africa. • VENUE J.K. P
ATRICK STOKER wanted Rachel Roberts on his team right from the start, when as 9-year-olds they played in the same Malibu Little League. But it took 15 years for sparks to fly, when Rachel, now a photographer and model, found herself in need of a volleyball partner for a doubles match at Surfrider Beach and a friend recommended Stoker, a commercial and residential contractor. Two-and-a-half years later, Stoker proposed on the beach in San Onofre with a bottle of Champagne in one hand and a custom-designed gold ring bearing his great-grandmother’s diamonds in the other. Their wedding was an all-hands-on-deck effort: Rachel’s cousin made her veil—the perfect finishing touch to her reworked vintage gown of Point Plat French lace with poetic bell sleeves; the flowers (a natural array of chamomile, ranunculus, lavender, golden tickseed and tuberose) were arranged by Patrick’s sister Cayley Stoker, and the groom and his wedding party constructed the ceremony structure from found driftwood and installed it on a private stretch of sand near Paradise Cove. “It put in place an energy that it was a wedding for everyone,” says Rachel, who made her own cakes—two towers of 50 tissue-thin French crepes, including one with Nutella and the other with layers of whipped cream topped with fresh raspberries. “Everyone was invested and a part of it.” The pair’s Little League coach Tim McAlevey served as officiant; after the vows were exchanged, the party reassembled at a friend’s home on the Malibu bluffs, where guests sat down to a family-style dinner of filet mignon and salmon, and personalized notes on Japanese paper from the bride and groom. The couple’s friend, producer E.B. Sollis, deejayed, spinning Motown and old-school hip-hop into the wee hours: “Patrick and I snuck out well before the party was over,” confesses Rachel, who returned the next morning to find more than a few sleeping overnight guests. “After a little bit of cleanup and leftover cake, we hopped in our VW van and drove up the coast to Bacara (Resort) for our mini-moon,” she says. •

K
RISTIN SOONG AND Phillip Rapoport first met in college at Columbia University. At the time, Kristin, now a trader for a bank in New York, and Phillip, who currently works for a software company, were both dating other people. “In college, it wasn’t really meant to be, and when our first date [a motorcycle ride to their alma mater] actually happened, everything sort of fell into place from there,” says Kristin, a San Francisco native who fatefully ran into Phillip at a New York bar in 2008 after returning from a year working abroad in São Paulo, Brazil. Four years later, the couple planned a trip to Rome, where Phillip proposed on the first night at the Piazza del Popolo. After deliberating over the perfect wedding venue (Aspen Mountain in Colorado was also a top contender), the couple settled on San Francisco’s Legion of Honor for both the ceremony and reception. “To me, the building looks like the buildings where we got engaged in Rome,” says Kristin. In a nod to their ancestry (Kristin hails from a Chinese, Irish and German background, while Phillip is Russian and English), the couple hosted a traditional Chinese banquet for the rehearsal dinner, and served Tsar Nicoulai Caviar and signature cocktails such as Moscow mules and cucumber-infused Hendrick’s gin martinis on the big day. For the decor, they enlisted San Francisco planner Melissa Panico of MAP Events, who reimagined the neoclassical space with mercury glass votives, centerpieces with ranunculus and succulents by Cherries Flowers, and a lounge area with French-inspired furniture. “I think the best thing was just having everybody come from all over the world and spend a weekend in my hometown,” says Kristin, who wore a lace dress by Monique Lhuillier. “Having everyone around you to celebrate a moment like that only happens once.” •

ETTING MARRIED AT YOUR OWN HOUSE—there is something so magical about that,” remarks Orange County native Laura Vassar of her June “I dos” to Texas-born Kristopher Brock in front of her family’s Newport Beach summer home. The bayfront affair, awash in a palette of muted pinks, lush greens and rich creams, came as a surprise to the 180 guests, who accepted invitations to an engagement party (in the midst of party planning the couple decided to make it a wedding instead). Laura—who, alongside Kristopher, co-designs the elevated American sportswear label Brock Collection—collaborated with dressmaker Geri Gerard on her gown, a timeless A-line silhouette composed of Chantilly lace and organdy, blending tradition and taste. As it happens, Laura and Kristopher’s story also begins with a wedding dress: In 2011, the pair met in a couture class at Parsons, where Kristopher asked his future Mrs. to be a dress fit model for his final project. “I had absolutely no idea he liked me,” recalls Laura. After graduation, the two reconnected while Kristopher was living in Paris; the following year, he proposed after an extended stay with Laura during New York Fashion Week. The evening unfolded like a storybook, with Laura tossing her bouquet of garden roses out the second-story window, and guests dancing under the canopy of string lights until the early morning hours. Before the night’s end, there was one more surprise: During the cutting of their lemon-and-coconut layered confection, the newlyweds revealed they were expecting. “Our doctor in New York sent an envelope with the sex of our baby to our cake maker, who would then dye it either pink or blue,” Laura explains. (It was blue, and their son, Charlie, was born in December.) STORY BYLINE
PRINCESS GRACE KELLY OF MONACO ON HER WEDDING DAY, 1956 As Grace Kelly boarded the SS Constitution with her bridesmaids and 80 pieces of luggage bound for her nuptials to Prince Rainier III of Monaco, her Hollywood studio, MGM, bestowed one last parting gift: a wedding gown fit for a princess. Costume designer Helen Rose imagined 25 yards of silk taffeta, 100 yards of silk net, peau de soie, tulle and 125-year-old Brussels rose point lace dotted with seed pearls into a conservative bell-skirted confection—and in so doing, inspired legions of future brides-to-be. For the 50th anniversary of the royal wedding in 2006, the Philadelphia Museum of Art pulled the dress out of its archives for one of the museum’s most visited exhibits; Kate Middleton’s custom McQueen gown for her 2011 nuptials to Prince William was said to have been directly inspired by Kelly’s— and girls the world over (princesses or not) look back and dream of their own crowning moments.
