California is romantic. Its scenery is so stunning, so dramatic that you can’t help but fall in love with the topography and, if you’re lucky, with an amazing partner who lives here, too. Ripe with beauty at almost every turn, the Golden State practically plays Cupid with its picnics at the beach, long drives up the coast, and wine tastings in the Napa vineyards. It just doesn’t get much more picturesque than that. So, when it comes time to plan your perfect day, you should use the backdrop of our state to inspire your nuptials—be it a coastal-themed soiree, an over-the-top garden party, or a traditional religious ceremony at your place of worship. Each locale can be a jumping-off point for your imagination and help in your planning. Just ask New Yorkers Joshua Gaynor and Adam Cohen-Aslatei, who met and fell in love while visiting Los Angeles, then returned to California to tie the knot; or Ligaya Tichy and Russ Simmons, who threw a celebration to remember at Dos Pueblos Ranch in Santa Barbara, and set up nearly 70 luxurious tents for their guests to camp out on the property. We also present the best in food and decor, jewels and gowns, and tips on how to set up your first home together in style. (And lest you thought you were busy prepping for your own wedding, imagine being in the shoes of L.A. designer and bride Maria Korovilas, who not only designed her own runway-worthy wedding gown, but the dreamy hand-embroidered and beaded dresses worn by her bridesmaids, too.) With one of the most magnificent pool houses I have seen outside of Hearst Castle (complete with shell-encrusted walls and sparkling chandeliers), La Villa Contenta sets the scene for some of this season’s most opulent gowns featured in our fashion story. I am lusting after the Gucci gown on the cover—so different than the fairy-princess gown I wore in the late ’90s, but oh, so fun! There are so many elements that go into creating your perfect wedding, whichever locale you choose; most important, though, is that the day truly reflects you as a couple, making it one that you will never forget.

New Bohemians Designer MARIA KOROVILAS dreams WH up her FREE-SPIRITED celebration and an inaugural BRIDAL LINE to match

Maria Korovilas never dreamed of an elaborate wedding. But when the Los Angeles-based fashion designer and her then-fiance, musician Lawrence Katz (longtime guitarist for the Mighty Mighty Bosstones), secured Silver Lake’s Paramour Mansion as the site for their late-spring nuptials, her creative wheels were set in motion. “I’ve just been obsessed with that place forever,” says Korovilas, who resides with Katz and their pup, Elizabeth, in the neighborhood. “I started reading about it, and got really inspired by the motif and the stories,” she says of the hilltop property, once home to 1920s silent film star Antonio Moreno and his wife, Daisy Canfield, and later, a convent for Franciscan nuns. The result: an Art Nouveau-infused affair (taking style cues from Tim Burton’s fantasy film Big Fish), which included a tarot-card reader, a mermaid performer swimming in the outdoor marble pool for cocktail-hour entertainment, as well as a lawn-party feast for the 300 white-clad guests. But her vision didn’t stop there. The estate’s opulent setting motivated the designer—who launched her Korovilas ready-to-wear label in 2012—to debut part of her inaugural eponymous bridal and evening-wear line at the lavish fete, including customized beaded bridesmaid and flower girl dresses, and her own dreamy
“bohemian bourgeois” gown—fashioned from a Victorian lace tablecloth she found at a flea market and festooned with antique brass-hued embroidered appliqué. “I wanted all of the elements to come to life,” says Korovilas, who drew upon the property’s ornate details for her designs, from the carved antique furniture to the Greek Revival Wedgwood collection in the dining room, wallpaper motifs, and the pine forest surrounds. “A bridal collection was always in the plan, it was just a question of timing,” says Korovilas, who also creates custom wedding gowns from her studio in Downtown L.A. (“I can only do so many a year since so much couture handwork is required”). “Once I got engaged and realized I was going to end up designing everything, I thought, what better time than now to design all of my dream dresses?” Made up of 25 dresses, the inaugural Paramour Collection is “interchangeable between bridesmaid, bride, guest and red carpet,” she says of the versatile range.

Created in her signature shades of lavender gray and Wedgwood blue, each dress is also available for special order in ivory. “I think the world is a little different now; people get married in untraditional ways and in nontraditional places,” says Korovilas. “We’re pushing a different point of view.” mariakorovilas.com. • LESLEY McKENZIE

When L.A.-based event planner Beth Helmstetter visited Haiti following the devastating earthquakes of 2010, she had an inspired idea: Rather than registering for high-end espresso makers, what if couples started out their new lives together by giving back? “The prospect of building a marriage and a life on the ritual of generosity was one I had hoped would resonate,” says Helmstetter, who got her start in fundraising for nonprofits. That it did: Earlier this year, she launched The Good Beginning, an online charitable donation registry (that can be paired with more traditional wish lists) that raised more than $250,000 for causes around the world in the nine months since it launched. For her engagement party to Patrick Barrazza, Hughes chose a vintage travel theme, whisking guests from a Kentucky Derby at the stables to a Moroccan hookah lounge in the grotto as they meandered throughout the six-acre property. “It transports you into its own fairy tale,” says Hughes. “There are a lot of books out there about how to fix a broken marriage, but not enough that talk about how to avoid it being broken in the first place,” says Jo Piazza, who met the love of her life, fellow journalist Nick Aster, on assignment in the Galapagos Islands and tied the knot eight months later. The S.F.-based journalist and author—who penned the novel The Knockoff with Lucy Sykes—spent the next year traveling the world researching partnerships in different cultures. The result? How to Be Married: What I Learned From Real Women on Five Continents About Surviving My First (Really Hard) Year of Marriage (Harmony, $26), a memoir-driven book debuting this April that spotlights modern relationships. “It made me think of marriage as this grand journey, rather than the destination,” says Piazza. “The best advice I got was from a guru in the Mexican jungle. He said that a lot of couples come in saying, ‘Now we’re one,’ and that’s bullshit. You have to maintain your sense of self and your own life in order to be a good partner.”

SPINELLI KILCOLLIN
Put a Ring on It As engagements traditionally go, jewelry designer Yves Spinelli’s proposal to his partner in life and work, Dwyer Kilcollin, came as a surprise to the bride-to-be. Of course, this occasion included an off-script diversion for the groom as well: searching the streets of Tokyo during
a work trip in May 2015, after Spinelli temporarily misplaced the custom-made ring—two diamond bands set in white gold and one solid 18-karat yellow-gold band, all linked with rose-gold connectors. “I woke up in Japan and he was having a heart attack,” recalls Kilcollin of SPRING WEDDINGS 2017

the day the proposal almost didn’t happen. “I followed him around retracing our steps. Five hours later, I said, ‘Please tell me what is it we’re looking for,’ and he says, ‘It was your engagement ring.’” Shortly after Spinelli’s admission, the ring was found in a client’s office where

it had been left during a day of meetings, but the revelations didn’t end with their harrowing engagement adventure. The talented Los Angeles-based pair, who launched the namesake jewelry brand Spinelli Kilcollin in 2010, also designed each other’s wedding rings. They revealed them to one another during their ceremony—a gorgeous affair held on the lush grounds of Silver Lake’s Paramour Mansion in June 2016. The bride wore a Rodarte gown embellished with metal sequins, with a matching floral headpiece, and Spinelli wore a Saint Laurent suit. Kilcollin created a solid platinum band with 24-karat gold accents for her groom, while Spinelli’s design for his wife comprises three sparkling linked bands: one white-gold band with white diamonds and two yellow-gold bands pavéd with green and orange diamonds, all joined with white-gold accent rings. Their journey will soon come full circle in a bridal line set to launch this spring that’s reflective of their established aesthetic: prizing architectural and stackable elements and encompassing varying precious metals. “I’ve been trying to do this for years and have just been waiting for the right moment,” says Kilcollin of the collection. “It’s finally time.” spinellikilcollin.com. • MELISSA MAGSAYSAY

Silver Lake-based jewelry designer Daria de Koning got her start designing custom engagement rings before launching her own line in 2006; since then, the trained fine artist and gemologist has quietly garnered a cult following for her distinctive pieces. “I can’t resist a gorgeous cabochon,” says de Koning, who describes her work as “painting with gems,” and favors emeralds and sapphires, as well as more unusual elements such as blue opals, rainbow moonstones and even fossilized coral. Dream Weaver
Fashion’s newest iteration of the classic chignon turned heads at New York designer Ryan Roche’s Spring 2017 ready-to-wear presentation. Hairstylist James Pecis pulled models’ tresses back into low, center-parted ponytails, then wove pieces of muted-pinkcolored silk between sections before twisting the hair into a tight bun at the base of the neck. To achieve the dreamy ballerinainspired look for your wedding day, the Northern California-born Pecis suggests, “If you are having a dress made, ask if there are any scraps left over you can have to use; the soft edge of the cut or torn fabric adds to the texture in the hair. Lace can work as well.” • CAROLINE CAGNEY

FRENCH ACCENT
For florist Kelsey Harper of Flower Girl Los Angeles and photographer Tyler William Parker, romance was ignited via their creative callings. After first meeting through a mutual friend in 2008, the two reconnected while working a fashion event three years ago, and last September, the Eagle Rockbased pair exchanged vows in Maui. Here, the bride and mother of two reveals how she prepped for her day: FITNESS The wedding was just four months after I gave birth to my second baby, so I really had to throw myself into self-care mode! I did the Tracy Anderson mat workout in my living room daily—it really helped me get results quickly. FACE I saw Tony at Face Place in West Hollywood for a facial that begins with a deep cleansing followed by a galvanic current, which does everything from tightening skin tissue to stabilizing pH. A week before we left for Maui, I had a body scrub at the Wi Spa in L.A. For the big day, I wanted a natural look, so makeup artist Cynthia Rose prepped my skin with Tata Harper Resurfacing Mask before applying Yves Saint Laurent Beauty Le Teint Touche Éclat Foundation, Nars Velvet Matte lip pencil in Dolce Vita, and waterproof Make Up For Ever mascara and Stila Convertible Color. HAIR I went to Lucas Clouser at Ramirez Tran Salon for sandy blond highlights. I ended up getting extensions, as my hair hadn’t recovered from pregnancy—they were such a breeze, and even lasted through swimming in the ocean. F LOW E R G I R L LOSA N G E L E S.CO M

Jamie Sherrill (aka “Nurse Jamie”), a registered nurse, skin-care expert and owner of Beauty Park Medical Spa in Santa Monica, is revered by celebrity clients for her trademarked specialty, The Baby Drop Fillers, a technique delivering bruise-free, natural-looking results. “With a special ‘Gucci’ needle [a custom needle she designed] and micro-baby droplets of filler such as Juvedérm or Restylane, I make hundreds of minuscule punctures to get the filler exactly where it is needed for a contoured, natural infusion that gives overall definition, volume and lift. I can smooth away wrinkles even on the day of a big event,” Sherrill says. While the treatment takes twice as long as a regular injection, due to her meticulous technique, devotees cite a lack of puffiness that makes it well worth the extra effort. 1511 Montana Ave., S.M., 310-587-3502. A Sonoma-based event planning and design company led by longtime friends Justina Geraghty and Brittany Bijan, Harlin & Sparrow’s designs offer warm, relaxed decor with nods to the terroir, such as artful arrangements atop wine barrels. Inspired by organic materials and pops of color, Bijan and Geraghty have the recipe for statement-making decor. “We love mixing and matching patterns and textures,” says Bijan, “and using nature in our designs— like fruits, leaves and branches.” They try to avoid fleeting trends. “We get to know our clients and what speaks to them,” says Geraghty. “Then we add our version of a modern edge.” harlinsparrow.com.
A FABULOUS FETE For memorable invites, place cards and menus, it’s hard to top the work of A Fabulous Fete’s Lauren Saylor. Her Mission Viejo studio creates exuberant, elegant calligraphy that befits the joyous occasion. “I attract couples that want something beautiful and unique,” says Saylor, “but with a bit of edge that you don’t see in traditional calligraphy work.” Her aesthetic goes beyond the classic black-and-white type, with bright hues, spirited illustrations and loose, imaginative typography. Saylor’s blog shares ideas outside the envelope as well—from DIY decor to tabletop ideas. The future holds even more inspiration. “I’m loving all of the stars and moons that I’m seeing,” she says of her favorite trends for 2017. “And palms, either illustrated on your paper items or used as decor on the table.” afabulousfete.com. • KERSTIN CZARRA

“I design tabletops to be a reflection of personal style,” says Farra Miron, the creative force behind the San Diegobased company—offering more than your regular rental fare. In the past, Miron has imagined settings inspired by British luxury brand Smythson and Italian photographer Massimo Vitali. “Being able to read your client and their personal taste is key,” she says. For 2017, Miron favors simplicity with the unexpected: cactus, patterned textiles and cut crystal, for example. “It makes total sense and is a beautiful, elegant table,” she says. Unlikely palettes also receive praise. “I love black graphics with feminine pinks and textured indigos,” says Miron. “They just play off one another.” hostesshaven.com.

This spring, brides are ditching the monochromatic compact bouquet for the more-is-more version, according to a few of California’s go-to florists. “I’m getting fewer and fewer requests for all white or a single shade,” says Natalie Bowen Brookshire of San Francisco’s Natalie Bowen Designs. “Brides are open to much more color.” For added elegance, layers of hand-dyed silk or chiffon ribbon are perfect for tying up the bouquet, attests Natalie Gill of San Diego-based Native Poppy. Not changing? “Peonies are still a classic—so big and bold, yet still feminine and soft. Locally grown garden roses are also huge right now. Distant Drums and Koko Loko are some of the most popular varieties,” says Gill. “My brides are loving big blooms and lots of deep-green vines and wild, unruly foliage.” N ATALIEBOWEND ES IGNS.CO M; NAT IVEPO PPY.CO M

Working with a coterie of design talent, including L.A.’s own Eric Lin and Chris Earl, they focus on unique, timeless pieces that adapt to a new family’s needs. “Modularity plays a key role,” says Creative Director Tiffany Fong. “Furniture can grow and expand as homes change.” A few standouts: the Cameron Sofa, “comfy enough for Netflix binges,” and the Ovoid tables that can be clustered or stand alone. The next day’s blacktie affair—where the bride donned a custom Monique Lhuillier dress—was replete with an alfresco ceremony held on a floating platform built over the pool and a reception staged on the tennis court (“We called it an open-air crystal theater,” says Jennifer of the transformed venue). Dinner, catered by Paula LeDuc, began with two vegan courses—a sweet-corn risotto and a beet salad—followed by a choice of roasted Sonoma lamb or farmers-market cauliflower for the entree. “My wedding planner and I had a rule that roughly half of the food served would be vegan,” says
Menu (turn) Jennifer Cain and Eric Brown’s love affair began as many modern romances do—on Tinder. After two years of courtship following the successful right swipe, Eric popped the question along the shores of Lake Tahoe in September 2015. For the San Francisco-based couple, the venue choice was an easy one: While Eric is vice president of sales for clean-energy company Carbon Lighthouse, Jennifer is a partner and brand ambassador for her family’s business, Hall Napa Valley. (Jennifer’s mother, Kathryn Hall, owns the winery and is a former United States ambassador to Austria.) “Many of our happiest memories are from my family’s home [in Napa] and on the surrounding vineyards,” says Jennifer of the private residence, set in the bucolic hills above Hall Rutherford winery. Given the backdrop, food and drink were of the utmost importance. And despite the fact that the bride is a vegan and the groom a vegetarian, the welcome dinner was a Texas barbecue, a nod to Jennifer’s home state. Pit-

Naturally, a slew of both fine and sparkling wines were served throughout the evening—including the vineyard’s prize Kathryn Hall Cabernet Sauvignon—but the drinks of choice were the Walt rosé of pinot noir and Hall cabernet sauvignon created especially for the festivities, complete with personalized labels celebrating the couple. • SARI ANNE TUSCHMAN Jennifer and Eric at their Texas-themed welcome dinner. Mackenzie and I met on the set of Plain Jane, an MTV makeover show that set up blind dates. He was the director, I was the host, and after working together for five years, we ended up being the ones on a date. He proposed at the beginning of 2016 in the middle of a snowstorm in Colorado, and we decided to get married in my native England, where most of our family and friends live. Following our October wedding in the English countryside, we took advantage of being in Europe and headed to the famous Le Sirenuse (sirenuse.it) in Positano, Italy, for a few days. The hotel was unbeatable for breakfast with a panoramic view. Lunch at Da Adolfo (daadolfo.com) on the beach (just a boat ride away) and sundowners at Franco’s Bar (francosbar.com) topped our list of things to do. Visiting in the fall meant the weather was cooler, still sunny, and the crowds had died down—perfect. We then migrated down the coast to the little town of Amalfi, checking in just minutes away to Monastero Santa Rosa Hotel & Spa (monasterosantarosa.com) in Conca dei Marini, an awe-inspiring former 17th-century monastery built into the cliffside—the views are spectacular. Watching the sunset from the hotel’s infinity pool, Aperol Spritzes in hand, was one of our best memories. We got up early and took the first ferry to Capri. At the famous La Fontelina beach club and restaurant (fontelina-capri.com), we ate our body weights in seafood pasta, drank the local rosé and then strolled around town. Ge-

Prairie Flower Writer MOLLY CREEDEN looks back on her Collin and I met after midnight at a bar called No Malice Palace on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, known for its raucous dance floor and heavy rotation of Biggie Smalls. So when we got engaged on the Venice Beach canals six years later—having moved to Los Angeles, where Collin works at Netflix and I’m a writer for magazines and the online estate-sale platform Everything But the House—we wanted our wedding to conjure the fun and rowdiness that started it all. And if I’ve learned anything during my four years in California, it’s that there’s a gorgeous alchemy in gatherings that are both elegant and laid-back. We picked a location where we’d have the most freedom: Fountain Valley School of Colorado, a boarding-school campus in Colorado Springs where I grew up while my father was headmaster. It’s a stunning place—an adobe enclave tucked into the prairie at the foot of the Rocky Mountains that informed much of my personal aesthetic and my connection to the West. Serendipitously, Irene Neuwirth, with whom Collin worked to design my engagement ring, also attended the school. We let the backdrop of the campus, with its crisp peach and pink Pueblo Revival Style architecture (some of which dates back to

1927), open blue skies, and view of Pikes Peak, do a lot of the visual work, opting for a clean, muted palette as a complement. My bridesmaids wore white Joanna August floor-length dresses, and I asked my florist, Frances Harjeet of Prema Style, to fashion bouquets and arrangements that were almost matte. I leaned on my West Coast sensibility as we planned remotely—getting my veil from Solstice Bride, my dress from Vera Wang in Beverly Hills and custom “Hecho en Venice” cups specially for the after-party. There were plenty of memories to rehash the next day, from antics in the campus dorms where our friends stayed, to the dramatic thunderstorm that erupted after the reception, to the bonfire after-party (where a surprise mariachi band stole the show). My favorite, however, is the moment I walked with my dad into the school’s small chapel—whose pews I had sat in hundreds of times while he led all-school assembly—and saw Collin’s and my favorite people, assembled in the same rows. •

“He had seen me before we went on our first date, but I had never seen him,” remembers San Francisco native JJ Fritz of the air of mystery surrounding her initial encounter with her future husband, Patrick Moeller. Patrick, who works in institutional sales for an investment company, first noticed JJ, now a Pilates instructor, while they were both living in Washington, D.C., in 2011. After the then-Georgetown undergrad walked by him in the apartment building where she lived, Patrick acted on impulse—asking her doorman for her phone number. “She seemed like a free spirit and I wanted to know who this girl was,” he says. “I might have given him a couple six-packs in return.” Four-and-a-half years later, Patrick found the perfect moment to seal the courtship while the couple, who live in Boston, was visiting JJ’s family home in Lake Tahoe. During sunset margaritas on the edge of the dock, he presented her with a glimmering square cushion-cut sparkler as both of their families looked on in anticipation from the nearest window. “I made the decision [that she was the one] a long time ago,” reveals Patrick. As the last of five sisters to tie the knot—none of whom married in their hometown—JJ decided to return to the Bay Area for their wedding, knowing what it would mean to her mother. “We

The five-day whirlwind—seamlessly orchestrated in part by Los Angeles-based event authority Oren Cove—was equal parts country and city, commencing with a rehearsal dinner at JJ’s mom’s house in Pacific Heights, a wine-tasting lunch at her father’s winery, Lynmar Estate, in Sonoma, and a Friday night welcome party on the Embarcadero below the Bay Bridge. On Saturday, the pair exchanged vows at nearby St. Vincent de Paul church, where a gospel choir flooded the aisle for their recessional, singing “Oh Happy Day,” and carrying the serenade into the streets before the newlyweds rode across the Golden Gate Bridge in a vintage convertible Mercedes to their reception venue, Sausalito’s historic Cavallo Point. As the 215 revelers shuffled into a tented dinner, they were greeted with a breathtaking baby’s breath canopy. The evening then unfolded into a reception in an olive tree-lined in the ballroom. Throughout the festivities, JJ and Patrick made sure to incorporate their beloved Chihuahua, Artie, whose likeness (seated in a plane, wearing aviator goggles) made an appearance on save the dates, invitations and even a special groom’s cake. The two danced into the night with the golden lights of the bridge glowing behind them before jetting off to the Hawaiian isles of Lanai and Maui for their tropical honeymoon. •

Pet pugs as flower girls, a surprise performance from friend and British singer Bryn Christopher, and an oversized typographic sculpture—there was no shortage of wow factor at the wedding of Royce Wadsworth and Greg Reed. “We wanted more of a fun, casual celebration than a traditional, formal affair,” says Royce, a former wardrobe stylist and now chief of staff for Los Angeles-based podcast network Wondery. When he first met Greg, now vice president of technology partnerships for Universal Pictures, three years ago at a bar for a mutual friend’s birthday, he thought, “I have to pursue this guy,” recalls Royce. The pair spontaneously broke off from the party to grab a late-night dinner at nearby Kitchen24 in West Hollywood. After three months of dating, Greg proposed: “I chuckled and said, ‘No,’” laughs Royce of his original hesitation. But one year later, he turned to Greg on the couch at home in L.A. and said, “OK, yup, I’m ready to get engaged now.” On a cloudless day in June, guests gathered amid the bleachers of the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club (a site the couple visited on their first weekend getaway) to witness the couple exchange vows on the open field. A large-scale “R + G” sculpture that Royce and his father built set the backdrop for the ceremony, which was officiated by Greg’s cousin and conducted partially in Welsh (Greg was born in Wales). After the “I do’s,” the best men popped bottles of Champagne as the newlyweds walked off, pugs in tow, to Justin Bieber’s “Sorry.” “I know it seems odd for a wedding, but it’s such a good song!” says Royce. “That’s when I knew it was going to be a good evening,” he adds. Open-air lounges and games set the scene for cocktail hour, followed by a tented dinner on the field. Personal details were in abundance thanks to family and friends— from cotton ball-dotted centerpieces (a nod to Royce’s parents’ cotton farming background) to wooden tabletop elements crafted by Royce’s father. “It was like everybody helped to put on a show,” he says. •

Grace Silk and William Tisch met through friends in Santa Barbara while they were both on college break. Five years later, Tisch proposed during a trip to Vienna, and in August 2016, the couple—who now resides in New York City—chose the lush oasis of the Hotel Bel-Air as the site of the vows. The California nuptials were a homecoming of sorts: Grace was raised in Carpinteria, while William’s hometown is Santa Barbara. The ceremony took place by the hotel’s iconic swan pond, and dinner was held on the front lawn under the stars. When it came time to dance, the party moved into the ballroom, where no detail was left untouched. “The bespoke dance floor was hand-painted and inspired by a vintage European tile I found,” says Grace. Stringer lights created a glittering canopy from the ceiling. Soul phenom Leon Bridges and his band kicked off the night, setting the tone for the celebratory evening. The bride wore a three-piece dress by Inbal Dror: a beaded minidress, a tulle skirt and a long-sleeve lace gown over the top. “It felt ethereal and romantic,” says Grace, who is planning to pursue her master’s degree in science and currently works as an executive assistant at New York design showroom and gallery Les Ateliers Courbet. The groom—an executive with the Eldridge Hospitality Group whose father, Steve Tisch, is a film producer and chairman and executive vice president of the NFL’s New York Giants—wore a navy suit by Tom Ford. Sweet cravings were satisfied with fresh donuts and a white chocolate buttermilk wedding cake, while those who continued the party late into the night were treated to egg sandwiches, sliders, truffle fries and burritos al pastor. When it finally came time to depart, guests left with Diptyque candles, a lovely end to a spectacular night. “It was absolute perfection,” says Grace. “I still can’t believe it was real.” • PLANNER Oren Cove ENTERTAINMENT John Virgel Band, Leon Bridges, DJ David La Melza RENTALS Found Vintage Rentals, Casa de Perrin VIDEOGRAPHER Eric Hires of The Wedding Artists Collective DRESS Inbal Dror SUIT John Varvatos ENGAGEMENT RING Vintage Hilary Tisch HAIR Calista Sanderson HONEYMOON Positano, Dubrovnik, Montenegro

A New York snowstorm helped Oliver Hammond to know the timing was right to propose to his then-girlfriend, celebrity stylist Halle Reum. The Los Angelesbased couple, who met in 2012 at Miami nightclub Story (on New Year’s Eve, no less), had been dating long distance while Oliver, a principal at investment management firm Tennenbaum Capital Partners, was stationed at his company’s Manhattan office. When his flight home got canceled due to inclement weather, it was a wakeup call: “Something in my heart gave out; I was just like, this has to be permanent.” Soon after returning, Oliver visited West Hollywood jeweler Jean Dousset to design a classic emerald-cut engagement ring, and later proposed at San Ysidro Ranch, the site of the couple’s first vacation together. The significance of the destination wasn’t lost on Halle: “The entire car ride there she just kept looking at me and laughing,” says Oliver. “She definitely knew.” They chose the Parker Palm Springs as the venue for their October wedding, in part due to the groom’s family history in the desert; his great-uncle was publisher, philanthropist and diplomat Walter Annenberg, whose estate Sunnylands has a long tradition of hosting politicians and foreign dignitaries. The bride was intent on a formal affair:

“Everyone was like, ‘You’re doing black tie in the desert?’” she reports, echoing her guests’ incredulity. “I’m a fancy person—I was not going to have a boho-chic wedding,” she adds. Halle’s custom Elie Saab dress was designed with Saab over meetings during Paris Fashion Week; beaded with small pearls and sequins and embellished with lace appliqués, the gown fit the reception’s outdoor enchanted-garden theme, brought to life with a lush trellis adorned with curly willow, hanging green amaranth
and Louisiana smilax (a vine flown in from Louisiana especially for the occasion) from Mark’s Garden. Both electronic dance music fans, Halle and Oliver enlisted friends DJ Zen Freeman and Australian musicians Nervo to play the reception: “My dad was like, ‘Wow, so this is what a rave is like!’” recalls Oliver with a laugh. Halle adds, “We had music blaring until 4 a.m.—we never made it to the brunch the next day, but people said it was really nice!” For Oliver, the evening’s defining moSPRING WEDDINGS 2017

“California was like the third spouse in our wedding,” jokes Joshua Gaynor, who married Adam Cohen-Aslatei on the brilliantly green grounds of a private country club in Los Angeles last July. Joshua is a New York City native and Adam grew up in Montreal (the pair now resides on Manhattan’s Upper East Side), but it was a chance meeting at a Beverly Hills charity event at Adam’s family home six years ago that brought them together. “We ended up talking all day,” says Joshua, vice president of communications for Fendi. “I was supposed to stay in L.A. one more day and extended a week. We spent every day together.” Nightly phone calls and plenty of air miles helped to sustain their long-distance relationship over the next three years until Adam relocated his job to New York (he now works as marketing director for Jun Group) and planned a surprise proposal on the beach in Tulum, Quintana Roo, Mexico. “He wouldn’t tell me anything,” says Joshua. “He was being weird and cagey, and he’s not like that at all. He’s the nicest Canadian person you’ve ever met.” Adam then popped the question with a woven yellow-gold band from Bottega Veneta. “It was truly magical,” recalls Joshua. The ceremony, performed by Rabbi David Wolpe, took place under a chuppah made from intertwining willow, olive and cherry blossom branches. Olive trees were placed throughout the dinner area and a crisp palette of white flowers and lush greens wound down the long communal tables. “We wanted everything very fresh, very California,” says Joshua, who wore a navy

blue Lanvin tux, while Adam wore Burberry in a similar shade. Singer Frenchie Davis serenaded the couple with Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” for their first dance and returned after dinner for a Donna Summer medley that Joshua says “took the roof off.” Guests gathered for a traditional cake cutting of the vanilla, chocolate and tiramisu confection, whose topper perfectly represented the couple: two grooms, one climbing up a tier of the cake and the other with his arm outstretched. “It’s so us,” says Joshua. “One is always helping the other.”• SPRING WEDDINGS 2017

Lydia Hearst & Chris Hardwick When model and actor Lydia Hearst and comedian Chris Hardwick first began their courtship, they bonded over a love of all things sci-fi and country music. So it was only fitting that their wedding day incorporate robots and zombies and a dose of Southern charm. “We’re nerds, and proud of it,” says Lydia, who married Chris at the Langham Huntington hotel in Pasadena in front of 750 cowboy boot-clad guests including James Corden, Paul Feig, Olivia Munn, Michael Sheen, Sarah Silverman and—yes—Star Wars androids. “R5-D4 is Chris’ favorite droid, so of course he had to be invited! He was also the ring bearer!” Close friend Christian Siriano custom designed the bride’s “dream dress,” while the groom donned a custom Prada suit. The Rev. Edward Dumke and actor Jaime King officiated the ceremony, followed by a Mindy Weiss-organized reception with zombie servers, hundreds of red roses from Mark’s Garden, and an elaborate Doctor Who-themed confection by Joanie & Leigh’s Cakes. Country star Clay Walker sang “I’d Love to Be Your Last” for the couple’s first dance while DJ Nikki Pennie provided the party’s soundtrack. “We danced the night away,” says Lydia. “Every moment was more perfect than the last.” • SPRING WEDDINGS 2017
