FOUNDER’S LETTER

Summer, besides being the year’s most anticipated season, is an excuse to languish in the glow of the sun. With warm rays beating down and the scent of jasmine and salt air intermingling, the effect can entice one to break free from the status quo. That carefree feeling was our muse this issue. And while we continue to bring you the latest and greatest across all categories, our features seek to capture the spirit of summer lovin’ in its many forms. Music and film scion Kenya Kinski-Jones grew up with legendary parents: Quincy Jones and Nastassja Kinski. She has emerged a quiet and strong beauty in her own right, and is tackling the modeling industry at full speed. With her longtime beau, Hollywood heartthrob Will Peltz, she is ready to take on the world in our sartorial depiction of young love, photographed at Hollywood Boulevard’s landmark Harvard House Motel. Speaking of making a mark, a new exhibition at the Getty Villa, “Plato in L.A.: Contemporary Artists’ Visions,” explores the philosopher’s enduring influence on today’s world. Modern greats have taken Plato’s concepts and reimagined them in an updated context. Set against one of the most classically inspired backdrops (and on my list of favorite places in Los Angeles!), the provocative works are a must-see. Sometimes getting off the grid is the perfect antidote to life’s busy social whirl, and I can’t think of a place more off the beaten path than the Lost Coast of Northern California—a stretch residing between Humboldt and Mendocino counties. We sent photographer Manfredi Gioacchini, known for his reportage travel journals, to this pristine locale to document his findings. What came back was a portfolio that captures a place largely untouched by man. It reminds us of the beauty this state offers, if you know where to look. Rocio Gonzalez de Narvaez and Paco de Narvaez know just where to go every summer: Santa Barbara has long beckoned to Rocio, the accessories designer behind Rocio G, and her professional polo player husband. The couple and their two children live in Argentina during the school term but pack up for the season and head to this California coastal clime to play polo and thrive in their bohemian rhapsody of a life. We are invited into their idyllic retreat—where days are filled with horses, asados, family, friends, artistic endeavors, beach, surf and flickering bonfires. Which brings me back to the idea of summer: It is fleeting. It is a finite period of time to relax, indulge, recharge and renew. Even in our eternal summer state, the feeling of escapism is short-lived and should be relished as September starts to sneak up and the faint sound of school bells is around the corner. Until then, I am going to dive headfirst into the season of the sun.

“I was in creative glitter heaven,” says makeup artist Pati Dubroff of creating Kenya Kinski-Jones’ rock ’n’ roll look for “Oh, You Pretty Things,” p.88. Big-wave surfer Laird Hamilton was born in an experimental saltwater tank at UCSF, a fitting beginning to his lifelong pursuit of water-based innovations. From pioneering aerial 360s, tow-in and foil surfing, and stand-up paddleboarding, to developing underwater resistance workouts with his wife, Gabrielle Reece, Hamilton isn’t one to sit around (unless he’s in a sauna or submerged in an ice bath pushing the limits of his body’s thermoregulation). The extreme athlete, who splits his time between Malibu and Kauai, is equally inventive in his approach to food, foraging locally as he seeks new waves around the world. The biodiversity and nutrient density he’s found on his travels inspired him to pen a new cookbook, Fuel Up (Assouline, $50), a compilation of more than 50 protein-rich dishes and, naturally, a chapter devoted to hydration. “If you eat what makes you feel clean, you start craving what you’re consuming. It’s a cycle,” he says. Here, a few things that catch Hamilton’s eye when the waves are flat. lairdhamilton.com. • E L I ZABETH VARNEL L

THE HOTEL CALIFORNIAN

Santa Barbara’s revived Hotel Californian is every bit bold and beautiful. Designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard delivered a megadose of splendor to the 1925 seaside property with his iconic pattern play, masterfully mixing zigzags, oversized mirrors, Moroccan tiles and an eclectic array of international antiques. His glamorous combinations are enough to make one dizzy with design sensory overload, however that floor-to-ceiling drama—what he calls a “graphic experience”—is what’s drawing celebrities, locals and far-flung travelers to linger a little longer at the lively 121room hotel. In reinventing the original Spanish Colonial Revival’s facade with more modern Moorish designs, Bullard says he wanted to “give Santa Barbara an edge that is fresh and exciting.” From the transportive black-and-white lobby to the Marrakech-inspired spa to the rooftop pool to the uber-locally sourced Blackbird restaurant and bar, his mission is wildly accomplished. A JAPANESE EATERY FINDS A HOME ON THE GROUNDS OF CHATEAU MARMONT

WH bits

As we sit down for lunch, Reika Alexander admits that she has not eaten in 24 hours—a seemingly unfathomable amount of time for one of Manhattan’s busiest restaurateurs. At En Japanese Brasserie, the bustling restaurant she opened in the West Village 14 years ago, she promptly orders a bowl of traditional Japanese rice porridge to which she adds scallions, a few nori strips and a raw egg. “It’s healing food,” she says. The reason for the unintentional fast, she explains, was due to the frenzy surrounding the pending opening of her second restaurant, Chateau Hanare, across the country in Los Angeles. Hanare translates to “little cottage set apart” in Japanese, and it’s a fitting moniker given that the cottage lies on the grounds of the storied Chateau Marmont, connected to the hotel’s courtyard through an interior pathway. The idea was set in motion nearly 10 years ago when Alexander was having a casual conversation with one of her regular customers, Chateau Marmont owner André Balazs. “I told him about a concept for a really intimate, cozy, authentic Japanese restaurant where each room would have a

different vibe. He said, ‘I love it, we should do it together,’” says Alexander. For his part, Balazs, who has a history of doing business in Japan, explains that he “has always been interested in Japanese culture. Whether you study ikebana or tea ceremonies, it’s a very beautiful and mannered society.” He initially suggested building the restaurant inside a Japanese-style hotel in New York that he was conceptualizing at the time, and later proposed a space in his London property, the Chiltern Firehouse, neither of which were quite right. Then he urged Alexander to fly to Los Angeles to check out a little Spanish bungalow at the edge of Chateau Marmont’s hillside “campus” (a word Balazs uses to explain the Continued on p.126

In Excess

MISMATCHING AND CLASHING ARE THE NEW NORMAL The most interesting notion for Fall 2018? The idea that all trends can be worn simultaneously—wearing sci-fi with tartan, adding a floral print, and topping with a neon balaclava...totally cool. This season is anything but minimal, and certainly exciting.

LOS ANGELES’ BELOVED GARDE SHOP BRINGS ITS WORLDLY PERSPECTIVE TO SUMMERLAND Garde, the Beverly Boulevard mecca of organic modern design, is escaping the city with a new second location outside of Santa Barbara in Summerland, set in a historic 1921 Shaker-inspired barn. Double the size of its original site, the shop is filled with the brand’s warm, minimalist global finds, including exclusive Dim Atelier lighting and Ben Storms furniture,

as well as new collaborations such as a line of fixtures and hardware created by founder Scotti Sitz and fabricator Peter van Cronenburg. There’s also Garde House, a one-bedroom rental on the second floor (available to book through Garde’s website) with luxe details including ebonized oak counters by Studio E&R and amenities such as Glitch coffee from Japan.

The renovation of both spaces occurred during the region’s recent wildfires and mudslides. Though their structure was spared, the disaster gave Sitz more resolve. “We fell in love with the town,” she says. “We’re determined to be part of the revitalization of this community.” 2280 Lillie Ave., Summerland, 805-845-8384; gardeshop.com. • K ER ST I N C ZA R RA

Fourteen years after co-founding the California furnishings label Serena & Lily, Serena Dugan is continuing to break creative ground. The textile designer and painter recently debuted the Serena Dugan Studio and its waterfront Sausalito headquarters. Here, Dugan dreams up original and commissioned fine art and decorative works, and transposes them into custom fabrics, wallpapers, hand-loomed rugs, encaustic tiles and more. She also uses her keen eye to create site-specific designs for interiors, all while staying true to her cheery, motific style. “Good design should have soul,” says Dugan. “When you combine the elements of art, pattern and decor in a way that’s personal and unique, that’s where the magic happens.” 225 Locust St., Ste. Byzantine Journey

ORI MENASHE AND GENEVIEVE GERGIS DEBUT BAVEL, THE MIDDLE EASTERN RESTAURANT OF THEIR DREAMS Shortly after Ori Menashe opened Bestia, his phenomenally popular Italian restaurant in Downtown Los Angeles, he had the idea to create a Middle Eastern spot where he would serve the food he grew up

eating in Israel and cooks for his friends and family at home. Now, after nearly five years of twists and false starts, he and his wife, pastry chef Genevieve Gergis, have opened Bavel, a sun-splashed restaurant in a former

warehouse at the foot of the Fourth Street bridge in Los Angeles. It’s perfect timing: The city is in the midst of a Middle Eastern culinary movement, as evidenced by a flurry of ambitious new restaurants such as

Kismet, Mh Zh and Jaffa. “Obviously there are the flavors, but Middle Eastern food is very festive, too,” Menashe says, explaining the surge. “We put the food in the middle of the table—it’s not one for you and one for me—and it’s like a gathering, with all these people sitting together and sharing.” As he does at Bestia, Menashe takes a freely creative approach with the classics— but labors over getting the foundations right. His hummus is lusciously silky (the secret: tiny garbanzos imported from Andalusia contribute smoothness, and sweet, stone-ground tahini from Palestine cuts bitterness), and served with spicy duck nduja or green and red chili pastes. It is among an array of delicious spreads, flatbreads and appetizers from which you can assemble a festive meal. More substantial dishes, such as a succulent beef cheek tagine, lightened up by pickling the beef before braising, are made for the center of the table and often include Menashe’s impossibly fine, handmade couscous. Across the board, spices are intense—drawn from the traditions of Turkish, Egyptian, Moroccan and Israeli

cooking—but also nuanced and balanced with fresh mint and other herbs. The wine list, by beverage director and natural-wine guru Ryan Ibsen, features unusual selections from regions around the Mediterranean and California. As a nice touch, many are decanted into pretty glass jugs Ibsen found in Tripoli, Lebanon. While Menashe’s menu is rooted in tradition, Gergis’ beguiling sweets are pure fantasy. “They don’t really do plated desserts in the Middle East,” she explains. “That forced me to be creative.” Her pillowy, barely sweet chocolate doughnuts are fragrant with cloves and rose-scented sugar, and served with a bowl of sherry-tinged cream. The licorice root bonbon, made with ground root from Afghanistan, arrives as an unadorned puck that reveals layers of licorice ice cream, muscovado cake and caramelized white chocolate, all set off by slightly sour licorice caramel. At Bavel, dish after dish is surprising, yet comforting —a mash-up of cuisines and cultures that feels perfectly at home in 2018 Los Angeles. 500 Mateo St., L.A., 213-232-4966; baveldtla.com. • M I C H A L EN E B U S I CO

THE SWEETEST THING It was during a 2014 hiatus in their native New Zealand that Gabrielle Mirkin and Luke Harwood came up with the idea to start their manuka honey brand, Activist. They were recharging, following a hectic stint in Manhattan (where Mirkin worked as a senior designer at Vogue and Harwood ran an independent fashion label), when their beekeeper friends asked to keep hives on the couple’s land. “We began to understand the bees’ key role as environmental indicators,” says Harwood. “It gave us a vision for a business in tune with our lifestyle.” After moving to Topanga Canyon

EMERGING ARTISTS REDEFINE OUR RELATIONSHIP TO CALIFORNIA AT THE HAMMER MUSEUM’S BIENNIAL This past winter, curators at the Hammer Museum began scouting artist studios in the Greater Los Angeles area to select a lucky 33 in all mediums for the fourth edition of the museum’s “Made in L.A.” biennial. They ended up choosing native Californians—about 25 percent— and others who hailed from as far away

as Tehran, Iran. The connective thread? These artists are all working in Los Angeles, and some are producing work deeply connected to the city. Themes of landscape and community, rituals and ceremony, visibility and a sense of place are mined through film, visual art and performance. Keep an eye out for work

by dancer and choreographer Flora Wiegmann, who references Southern California’s devastating wildfires, and Eamon Ore-Giron, whose new in situ mural is inspired by a Venezuelan poem about the Latin American diaspora. A short, turquoise-painted cinder block wall barely separates the Harvard House Motel from Hollywood Boulevard, and the structure’s noir-tinged aura persists even during daylight hours. Actor Will Peltz and his girlfriend of seven years, model Kenya Kinski-Jones, are on set at the seedy 1947 relic for C’s cover shoot, adding to a growing list of projects they’ve booked together, including campaigns shot by such luminaries as Mario Sorrenti and Peter Lindbergh. For the couple, there’s something romantic about the seamier side of the famed boulevard. “You know, we actually met right around here,” says 25-year-old KinskiJones. “We met in a church,” confirms Peltz, 32, who was shooting the indie film Sugar with Kinski-Jones’ mother, actor Nastassja Kinski. By all accounts, the couple felt an instant connection. Kinski-Jones, a Los Angeles native whose father is music producer Quincy Jones, arrived straight from high school—she was 17 at the time—to visit her mother on set. Peltz, the son of New York businessman and investor Nelson Peltz, spotted her immediately and, well, the story turns into a playful he-said-she-said. “I told Kenya’s mom, jokingly, ‘I want to take your daughter out. I’m going to marry her,’ ” says Peltz. He eventually got mom’s blessing (for a date), but maintains that Kinski-Jones pursued him. “Oh please, that’s not true,” she interjects. “He’s the one who asked me out.” Peltz teases her about relentless texting, but the laughter in his voice indicates his girlfriend’s early relationship memories adhere more strictly to the truth. A providential meeting also jumpstarted Kinski-Jones’ modeling career. She was introduced to photographer Bruce Weber by her mother, leading to a Vogue España story. Once the selfprofessed bookworm earned her bachelor’s degree in literature at Loyola Marymount University, she made her runway debut at Chanel’s 2016 Métiers d’Art show. Peltz, also a model, grew up in Bedford, N.Y., playing hockey, but came to acting after helping his sister, actor Nicola Peltz, run her lines. In addition to indie titles, he’s appeared in the thriller Unfriended—plus campaigns for Calvin Klein, Dior and Tod’s. Most

“I TOLD KENYA’S MOM, JOKINGLY, ‘I WANT TO TAKE YOUR DAUGHTER OUT. I’M GOING TO MARRY HER.’ ” recently, Peltz walked in Dolce & Gabbana’s Alta Sartoria show in New York’s Rainbow Room. The duo’s cadre of industry friends includes Anwar Hadid (brother to Bella and Gigi, and Nicola’s boyfriend) and a cross-section of Southern California natives—Peltz’s Coachella “class picture” on Instagram features Kaia and Presley Gerber. The pair will hopscotch between shoots around the world in the coming months, but Peltz and Kinski-Jones have their collective sights set on Tokyo this summer. “Kenya went for work last year and fell in love,” says Peltz, who has yet to visit Japan’s neon-lit capital. Wherever the summer leads them, Peltz hopes it will be as a couple. “When I’m traveling, I don’t know if it has to do with the jet lag and the time change, or the immersion in another culture, but I get super lonely,” he confesses. “So it’s always nice if Kenya goes with me. It makes the trip that much better—to share the experience.” •

One would never imagine that the world’s most famous (and expensive) living pop artist, Jeff Koons, the greatest (and most controversial) Greek thinker, Plato, and Jean Paul Getty’s lavish Getty Villa in Pacific Palisades would make any sense together. But the ambitious “Plato in L.A.: Contemporary Artists’ Visions” marries the ancient and the modern, the serious and the humorous, with philosophy and pop art—making sense of it all. The exhibit is a complex, challenging show exploring the classical Greek philosopher’s often-contradictory, provocative observations, and the ways they have influenced and informed 11 of the

most important contemporary artists of our time. But why is Plato—who conjures up memories of mind-boggling college term papers for many—relevant in 2018? As the art world tackles the country’s divisive, polarizing political climate, it is in fact an ideal time to revisit Platonic ideas on morality, humanity and politics. “Plato in L.A.” is not only a stunning collection of contemporary art, it’s a conversation starter. Curator Donatien Grau and the J. Paul Getty Museum’s director Timothy Potts

first started to plot the show three years ago, after Grau came forward with the idea. Potts agreed that the Getty Villa, which Getty created to be even more perfect than the Roman villa it was based on, was the ultimate locale. “The Getty Villa in itself is a very Platonic creation because it’s an imitation. It’s been recreated as the very ideal of itself,” Potts explains. “There is something very Platonic in creating something that is even more real than the real one.” Grau, who is the head of contemporary programs at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, began combing through the works of artists who have engaged in a productive, and sometimes contradictory, dialogue with Plato’s complex opinions on politics, love, idealism, God, poetics and, ultimately, the creation of art itself. After exhaustive research and countless studio visits, Grau assembled a group of contemporary artists who have always pushed buttons: Koons, Paul Chan, Rachel Harrison, Huang Yong Ping, Joseph Kosuth, Paul McCarthy, Whitney McVeigh, Raymond Pettibon, Adrian Piper, Michelangelo Pistoletto and Mike Kelley (the only non-living artist in the show). The never-before-staged exhibit encompasses a range of mediums:

sculpture, paintings, drawings and largescale installations, such as artist Huang’s grand piece Caverne 2009. Potts recognized immediately that Grau was the one person who could pull off such an ambitious undertaking. “He brings a depth of experience and understanding in the depths of two opposite ends of the spectrum—the very early and the very recent, which is rare,” Potts

explains. “He’s a youngish scholar [at 30 years old] with one foot in the ancient world as a scholar of ancient history and antiquity, and the other foot in the contemporary world.” Grau explains, “When Jean Paul Getty would talk about the Villa, he would say that he wanted the audience to have the sensation of being able to converse with the great Greek philosophers. So there is the DNA.” The exhibit—which despite having a framework can be absorbed in any order one chooses, thus creating a different experience for each viewer—is expansive in both scope and ideas. Housed in the special exhibitions galleries on the second floor, the show plays host to a range of installations, including Koons’ famous Play-Doh, a monumental aluminum sculpture that depicts a mound of multicolored clay, and McVeigh’s Divine Rules—a library of found books she has formed over a 10-year period—which was realized on site. “There’s a book in the library entitled 1000 Best Poems in the World, and, in the preface, the writer talks about a ‘Future Library’ that consists of the 100 best books in the world of universal human knowledge: astronomy, geology,

ship-building, telegraphy, history, chemistry, electricity, mathematics, mechanics,” McVeigh explains from London, where she lives. “I realized this is what I was doing by bringing the collection together, dedicated to ordinary subjects that connect us as humans. I’d read The Republic by Plato, and Donatien was informed of my influences in recent years. We had a studio visit where I proposed the library.” Pettibon’s contribution is a mini retrospective of 35 years of his Platonic work in 15 pieces, which were mounted in the way he sees his work—as a cloud of drawings. Kosuth, who has created neon, word-based pieces for decades, devised an installation excerpting Allegory of the Cave that illuminates from a large wall. “It was a quote which reflected very well my ambivalence with the philosophy of Plato,” Kosuth says. “This quote was, not without irony, the most anti-Platonic quote I could find.” Koons has always had an ongoing creative dialogue with objects that pre-exist. His massive sculpture Play-Doh not only coincidentally is a wordplay with Plato, but also addresses Plato’s contemplation of banality and often-negative feelings about art as too perfect and beautified in itself. “I think when Plato talks about the good and talks about transcendence, that’s the experience art wants to give—really the essence of someone’s potential,” Koons says. A seminal, collectible book accompanies the exhibit, and includes interviews with and writings by the 11 artists, exploring their work in relation to Platonic themes. “There was sort of a price to pay to be in the show,” Grau says. “[The book]

is quite an extraordinary document which has never been done—a conversation and dialogue around Platonic thought and how it allows us to read our world today.” Koons, who cites book seven of Plato’s The Republic as having a profound effect on his work, says: “There is a section that deals with the cave. And every day I think about the cave and walking out of the cave and how do you achieve that and how are you able to achieve transcendence to reach the highest level of consciousness,” he says. “And I believe the way to do that as a human being is to remove judgment and hierarchy, and if one practices complete acceptance of everything and finds everything perfect in its own being, that removes anxiety and fear. And when you remove anxiety and fear, you’re able to be open to everything and the realization that everything is here at your disposal and everything reveals its own being and its own energy. I think that’s how you walk out of the cave.” Potts hopes that “Plato in L.A.” will not only ignite an open dialogue about Opening night of the the world’s pre-eminent philoso“Plato in L.A.” exhibit at the Getty Villa. pher, but also connect people to how From top: McVeigh and PAUL McCARTHY. He’s against artists. Part of the argument of the exhibition, if there is one, was to confront that. Because artists allow us to address the commonplace in a much more complex, interesting way…they really challenge us and invite us to think differently and have a more open vision of our world.” “Plato in L.A.: Contemporary Artists’ Visions.” Through Sept. 3. The house that Rocio Gonzalez de Narvaez and her family decamp to for the summer, an adobe-walled dwelling set within the exclusive oceanfront enclave of Carpinteria’s Beach Club Road, may be the ultimate manifestation of a bohemian escape. Its front patio—“perfect for cooking asados,” says Rocio—is draped with African weave rugs and appointed with an Argentine leather campo chair; its light-drenched recessed living room beckons leisure-seekers with an assortment of Maison K pillows and a pulledwool wall hanging by artist Taiana Giefer. Yet she cites the home’s unusual cylindrical blueprint as chief among its attributes. “I love the roundness,” adds the designer behind Rocio G, an accessories line spanning hand-sewn leather bags and shell-encrusted camisoles. It’s a fitting quality for the Buenos Aires native to call out, given the full-circle nature of her relationship to this idyllic corner of Southern California. “My father came to play polo in Santa Barbara in 1980, the year I was born, and since then we have not missed a summer,” she says. When Rocio married Paco de Narvaez (another world-class polo player, who has a 9-goal

In the course of her 38-year pilgrimage, Rocio has inhabited spaces in Montecito and Summerland. Yet something about her current abode, a 1970s-era hideaway known as The Kiva House—replete with exposed wood ceiling beams, cement floors and a structural plan that borrows from Pueblo traditions—has come to mean home. That is, in addition to the couple’s South American properties: a

Days start around 6:30 a.m.—“and we drink maté until 7:30,” Rocio says. After breakfast, daughter Begoña, 7, and son Paquito, 10, start classes with a tutor while their parents visit the barn to check on Paco’s horses and ride. Lunch follows, as does a beach siesta, and then it’s back to the barn, this time for the children to get their rides in while their father has practice games. “We drink maté after practice, where we meet other players and families. We go back home later, around 8 p.m., to start a fire to cook outside,” says Rocio, adding, “It’s very simple, very nourishing.” The family’s transcontinental existence is, for Rocio, who is also an artist, a way to nurture her own creativity: “Argentina is raw; California is the wilderness tamed. And both places are beautiful and necessary for my inner balance,” she says. “My inspiration comes from this duality.” rociog.com. •

Alexander, Balazs and the Tokyo design firm AGE set about converting the space into a minimalist, East-meets-Weststyle abode—inspired by the Westernization of Japan in the late 1800s—with handmade furniture from Japan and a modern L-shaped garden punctuated with a snow-white pear tree. Questlove, another customer-turned-friend, created the jazz-centric playlist. Alexander found an apartment nearby and plans to be bicoastal, as does En Japanese Brasserie’s chef Abe Hiroki, who is overseeing the authentic kaiseki-style and à la carte menus, the latter of which features shareable dishes such as the daily homemade silken tofu. “We have such a beautiful food culture [beyond] trendy sushi with mayonnaise and fusion cuisine,” says Alexander, who grew up in Tokyo. “This really feels like walking into a friend’s traditional-style house in Japan…that just happens to be right off Sunset Boulevard.” 8907 Selma Ave., L.A., 323-9635269; hanarela.com. • KE LSE Y McKIN N ON Raw, organic vegetables in a sesame-edamame tofu crème at CHATEAU HANARE.

After leaving his native Japan to hone his culinary skills in Peru and Argentina, chef Nobuyuki “Nobu” Matsuhisa (noburestaurants.com) debuted Matsuhisa restaurant in Beverly Hills in 1987, forever altering Los Angeles’ fine-dining landscape. The sushi master has since built a hospitality empire—with business partner Robert De Niro—spanning 47 restaurants and seven hotels (and counting) across five continents. Still, the L.A.-based mogul’s name is arguably most synonymous with Malibu, where his iconic oceanfront restaurant Nobu—next to the Nobu Ryokan hotel—lures foodies from around the world. Here, Matsuhisa shares his Malibu musts. • Grom for authentic gelato made with ingredients imported from Italy. grom.it. • Malibu Farm Restaurant—a great spot for brunch. malibu-farm.com. • Solstice Canyon is a nice light hike with architectural ruins of past wildfires. 3455 Solstice Canyon Rd., Malibu. • One Gun Ranch practices biodynamic farming. Rhiannon McGAVIN Poet

C 130 SUMMER 2018

Photo Finish PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARK GRIFFIN CHAMPION STYLING BY REBECCA RUSSELL

Rhiannon McGavin is named after a mythological Celtic goddess, not a Fleetwood Mac song. “People always ask,” laughs the 20-year-old former Youth Poet Laureate of Los Angeles. Having studied Shakespeare since age 7, McGavin can wax poetic on any topic. “When I was little, I wanted to be a perfumer,” she says. “I would go around in the backyard with a bucket of water, putting weird leaves in, and then I would take my mom’s Dior perfume and replace it with my leaf water.” She now equates her former interest to her current passion by explaining that poetry, like perfume, “has an immediate effect and it’s something that unfolds on your skin over a longer period of time.” And while the UCLA English major may have published her first poetry book, Branches (Penmanship Books, $15), in 2017, she still doesn’t have her driver’s license. “I have a very intimate relationship with the Los Angeles Metro system,” jokes the Hollywood-bred writer, who has delivered spoken-word performances everywhere from West Hollywood’s Troubadour to New York City’s Lincoln Center. The daughter of a documentary filmmaker, McGavin goes by The Geeky Blonde on YouTube and often collaborates with her best friend, Ariela Barer, who stars in Marvel’s Runaways on Hulu. As for what the future holds, the self-proclaimed “superstitious” scribe declines to share, so that she doesn’t jinx it. “If there is a book next year, that would be amazing, but it’s not a given,” she says. “I’m happy not knowing everything.” • L INDZI SCH AR F
