am the first to admit that I can be a creature of habit. My itinerary can seem repetitive. I frequent the same restaurants and shops over and over again within my regular driving radius. I wish I were more adventurous… wish I were able to try new places. But, I worry I will try something new and then regret that I didn’t go to the original spot I was craving. I know I need to take a chance, because with every new adventure, much can be attained. The truth is, we all just need a little guidance. If this sounds at all familiar, then you will love this special Best of Los Angeles edition. Our editors and L.A. contributors have amassed the ultimate reference for the tried, the true and of course, the new. From the fabulous Beverly Hills restaurant in the Four Seasons to the Little Tokyo ramen house that has people lining up around the block; from the hip Silverlake home store to the chic Malibu boutique that sells only the most sought-after tees, here’s your field guide to a city filled with neighborhoods worth rediscovering. If you’re a Westsider who hasn’t been east of Fairfax in years, then our insiders’ report will reveal what you’ve been missing. If you live in the Hollywood Hills and haven’t seen Point Dume since last summer, now is the time to catch up on what’s cool along the coast. Like a CliffsNotes for Los Angeles, we did all of the homework and have made the city easy for you to navigate. Use this issue as a sort of game to get out of your comfort zone. Venture to at least a few of our fab recommendations across town. You won’t be disappointed, and you might even find a new favorite haunt or two. Go ahead: Throw caution to the wind. Enjoy all of L.A.’s hidden gifts. They all really are in your own backyard. Happy shopping, brunching, cocktailing, discovering—so much to do and so little time! Ready, set…GO!
We’d love to hear from you Please send letters to edit@magazinec.com.

The crown king of casual-chic, Tod’s proprietor Diego Della Valle reopens the brand’s Beverly Hills flagship with style and soul BY KELSEY McKINNON

collection on the refurbished second level. A desk alcove display. Script Bag in calfskin. Kate Beckinsale and Della Valle. The new Rodeo Drive flagship.
Tod’s reopened in April with collaborations from fellow countrymen (and Oscar winners) Dante Ferretti, the set designer who created a 1940s Hollywood-themed showroom on the third floor; and costume designer Milena Canonero, who designed The Script handbag exclusively for the relaunch. But apart from a few collaborations with friends, Della Valle avoids the kind of licensing deals and that have diluted many other luxury brands. “Know what you are good at,” he says, picking up a pair of crocodile Gomminos. “The thing for us to do now is stay where we are.” 333 N. s beautiful, no?” Diego Della Valle asks in an elegant Milanese accent. The CEO and founder of Italian leather house Tod’s S.p.A. studies his new flagship—a boutique on Rodeo Drive set to open that evening with a star studded bash. Brimming with family photos, paintings and relics, the refurbished shop is the epitome of Italian warmth. And, yes, it is beautiful. Ranking among Ferrari sportscars, Murano glass and Antinori wines, the Gommino driving shoe became an instant Italian classic after Tod’s launched its first pair in 1978. Della Valle has since aligned the brand with an adopted sense of CA casual chic, even hiring S.F. native Derek Lam in 2006 as the brand’s creative director. Setting the standard in luxury sportswear, Tod’s leather mocs have come to symbolize the fashionable good life—or what Della Valle simply refers to as, “the life.” In the Italian village of Casette d’Ete, life at the center of Della Valle’s billion-dollar luxury empire, replete with a soccer club, a film studio and high-speed rail investments, is deeply rooted in the pride of famiglia, with almost every member in the Della Valle clan playing a role in the business. The current ad campaign has even forgone models and celebrities in exchange for real Italian women. Why? “Because they’re good mothers,” Della Valle says in his matter of fact way. His family precedent inspired the home design concept of the new boutique, which is tastefully sectioned into comfortable seating areas. “Everyone in L.A. always has a destination,” he says. “Why not make them feel like they are going home?”

This major survey traces the various styles and influences throughout the career of Armenian-American artist Arshile Gorky. A seminal figure in the movement toward abstraction that transformed American art, Gorky’s tragic life informed some of the most gripping, deeply personal paintings of the 20th century.
Arshile Gorky: A Retrospective is organized by the Philadelphia Museum of Art in association with Tate Modern, London, and The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. The international tour is made possible by the Terra Foundation for American Art. The U.S. tour is supported by The Lincy Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts, and by an indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities. The exhibition at MOCA is presented by The Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation. Generous support is provided by Lenore S. and Bernard A. Greenberg, Steve Martin, The MOCA Contemporaries, and the Pasadena Art Alliance. Additional support is provided by the MOCA Friends of Arshile Gorky: Mrs. Joseph H. Stein, Jr. and Mrs. Louise Danelian. In-kind media support is provided by Ovation TV, Asbarez Daily Newspaper/Horizon Armenian TV, YEREVAN Magazine, and Los Angeles magazine.

’m coming clean here, right out of the box. I’m a trustee of Los Angeles’s Museum of Contemporary Art, and I’m inspired by our new director, Jeffrey Deitch. Having said that, his appointment did not come without controversy. Arguably one of the world’s most prominent contemporary art museums, MOCA is recovering nicely from a bout of financial flu, and the board is betting Deitch will be just what the doctor ordered to ensure continued good health and growth. Raised on the East Coast, Deitch attended Wesleyan University and Harvard Business School. Everyone agrees on the basics: He’s highly intelligent and well-versed in art history—antiquities, old masters and modernism. He has vast experience as a dealer and has helped to assemble some of the world’s great modern collections. For 15 years, he showcased the work of cutting-edge artists from his Manhattan gallery space, Deitch Projects. The Deitch announcement in January ruffled many a feather. First, he was a highly visible figure

York, leave a well-oiled life, move out of his comfort zone and take the gig? For a man who’s most comfortable in neatly pressed suits, that’s pretty much like going into a free fall. It’s because Deitch has a deep-seated love and respect for art and artists. He is curious and open and committed to bringing fresh ideas to the greatest number of people. Over the years, he has made contacts globally, and, other than his sacrosanct morning run, the man lives and breathes his work. It’s his passion; it feeds him. It’s his priority and, according to his friend, artist Jeff Koons, “The quality of Jeffrey’s life is enriched by his ongoing interaction with new artistic experiences.” He’s a doer and a builder, and so it follows that helping to reinvent MOCA had to be his next act, challenging him anew and further harnessing his talents. As something of the Pied Piper of contemporary art, Deitch will likely attract people who otherwise wouldn’t have ventured into this world. He’ll continue MOCA’s tradition of academic exhibitions, but there’s a sense he’ll also spice things up with a few off-beat shows as a new kind of director—one with left and right brains working together in harmony. And with his Harvard MBA, he also knows how to navigate the complexities of running an organization. Working with MOCA’s existing Nancy Rubins, Chas’ Stainless Steel, Mark Thompson’s staff, Deitch will recalibrate proAirplane Parts, About 1,000 Pounds of Stainless Steel Wire, and Gagosian’s Beverly Hills Space at MOCA, 2001. gramming to include greater connections to music, theatre, dance, in the for-profit art world, and people wondered— performance art and new technology. I’ll defer to artist Ed his work has begun. First up: this summer’s showing Ruscha, who points out, “We’re going through a of the late Dennis Hopper’s work. Ranch Life the barn doors are soon to swing open to a new Malibu retreat boasting sublime farm fare and luxury accommodations BY NORA ZELEVANSKY
k
urt Steeber is a self-proclaimed “nutritional alchemist.” He can spin simple baby artichokes into culinary gold. In more conventional terms, though, he’s the inaugural chef at a new soulsearching health retreat—The Ranch at Live Oak Malibu. Starting September 5th, on 120 canyon-adjacent acres, 14 guests will drop their designer duffles in organic-style bungalows and begin six-day, seven-night explorations into physical and mental re-calibration. This luxurious take on ashram-modeled detox hardly involves monastic mush, however. With produce plucked from local farms, Santa Monica’s famed market and onsite orchards and gardens, Steeber prepares flavorful vegetarian meals at The Ranch that don’t taste like you’re sacrificing. While Hollywood playgrounds such as the Malibu Country Mart are just down PCH, the lush ranch feels truly secluded. As guests approach via winding mountain roads, they’re more likely to spot red-tailed hawks than cars. The main “hacienda”—now the owners’ home—once belonged to western star William Boyd (aka Hopalong Cassidy). The new proprietors prefer to stay anonymous, though, and let the land speak for itself: “You can’t really own this ranch; you become custodian of it. It’s the spirit of the place.” Fine. But Steeber certainly owns the kitchen. For the chef, a veteran of Big Sur’s Ventana Inn, Activities on The food is essential to The Ranch’s detox experience, Ranch’s 120 canyon acres include hiking which aims to eliminate 5% of total body weight in and yoga—all fat with outdoor, low-impact exercise and modexpertly balanced
erated meals. After a 30-day at-home prep, groups—transported on Sundays from the Fairmont Miramar—settle into the cottages, named for resident animal pals. Each features a limestone bathroom, custom Alta Pampa blankets, Turkish towels and garden bouquets. “It should feel like you just arrived at someone’s chic estancia in Argentina,” notes one of the keepers. The Ranch’s physical program, helmed by Malibu Ashram veteran Marc Alabanza, aims to eliminate stress through 5:30am wakeup calls, Santa Monica Mountain hikes, yoga, naptime and afternoon massages. Meanwhile, Steeber prepares 1,500 daily calories of market-driven dishes such as celery root gnocchi with chanterelle mushrooms and Brussels sprouts leaves, and “mocktails”—like a Kombucha Old-Fashioned with agave, orange peel and muddled cherries. In experiential, healthconscious cuisine, Steeber believes beautifully presented, flavorful ingredients speak for themselves: “What constitutes ‘healthy’ for me is organic, from the earth, whole fruits, vegetables and grains and limited dairy, mainly eggs. We’ll make our own vinegar and ketchup from our tomatoes.” Elective activities, for interested guests, include farm harvesting or producing artisanal products such as olive oil, cured olives, honey and goat cheese. The proprietors earnestly hope people who visit The Ranch will return annually. “Coming to the same place each year really marks your progress,” they say. Hey, anything to taste Kurt Steeber’s baby artichoke purée. theranchmalibu.com. •

A handcrafted mat tress made to last a lifetime There was a time, before assembly lines and mass production, when fine mattresses were crafted not manufactured. At Custom Comfort Mattress, we handcraft our mattresses using cotton and genuine tufted buttons. Louise Dumont, one of our talented artisans, will tell you that the use of natural fabrics and hand-tufting improves the quality and extends the life of a mattress. And crafting the finest mattress possible is what we’re all about. After all, we do not sleep well unless we know that our customers sleep well.

etallic and gleaming like an architectural exclamation point at the south end of the Third Street Promenade, Santa Monica Place is officially reborn. Originally designed by Frank Gehry in 1980 (and renovated with little imagination a decade later), the geographically desirable spot just two blocks from the beach has had its Hollywood scenes-from-amall moments, from Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Pretty in Pink to the original “Beverly Hills, 90210.” But today, all traces of the ’80s and ’90s have been scrubbed clean to reveal a decidedly modern and breezy three-story, open-air shopping center with bold architectural curves, an impressive central elliptical plaza, sleek glass towers and custom “lounge cubes” where you can take a moment to rest your feet–and take in the beach views. Santa Monica Place’s owner, the local Macerich Co., closed the low-key mall in early 2008 to begin the dramatic transformation courtesy of design architects, The Jerde Partnership in Venice, and executive architect Omniplan, based in Dallas. Thanks to 550,000 square feet of top-notch shopping and unique dining options, Santa Monica Place is helping redefine the shopping center with more than 80 specialty shops, including Barneys CO-OP, Michael Kors, Tory Burch, Burberry, Louis Vuitton, Swarovski, and Tiffany & Co. And while local fans of Bloomingdale’s and Nordstrom no longer have to cross the 405 for a department store fix, it’s not only luxury brands here: You’ll find the Westside’s only CB2, the edgy British label AllSaints Spitalfields, a 19,000square-foot, two-story Nike and Joe’s Jeans. And with one-third of the space dedicated to dining, fashionable foodies have found their new hangout. Shoppers who have worked up an appetite can hit the rooftop Dining Deck, which offers six chefdriven restaurants such as Chris Yeo’s modern Chinese XINO Restaurant + Lounge, Jeremy Umland’s Sonoma Wine Garden and Richard Sandoval’s LatinAsian fusion spot Zengo, as well as special Friday happy hours with DJs on hand. The Market at Santa Monica Place features branches of beloved local restaurants such as Kings Road Cafe and The Curious Palate along with selections of artisanal cheeses, fresh bread, gourmet treats and small-batch olive oil. Of course, for power shoppers, an indoor-outdoor food court may just remind you of, well, “faster” times. 315 Colorado Ave., Santa Monica; santamonicaplace.com.•

The Italian Job
Hospitality hot shot Sean MacPherson will re-light the fires at eating institution Orso BY DEBORAH SCHOENEMAN With Orso, he’s taking his time, interviewing chefs and building a 100-seat restaurant at what he calls an Italian pace. “The whole thing is relatively organic,” says MacPherson, who has yet to come up with a new name but has an idea or two about the menu. Like at the old Orso, he plans to serve straightforward Italian food and keep the wood-burning oven churning out pizza. After all, it was good enough for a devoted celeb clientele that included Hollywood heavy hitters like Anjelica Huston, Warren Beatty and Annette Bening, Al Pacino, Peter O’Toole and Mel Brooks, who used to have his weekly lunch with the guys there. More recently, it was a hot spot for Jennifer Lopez, Orlando Bloom, Colin Farrell and Kate Winslet. “I don’t want to change it dramatically; I’m just going to give it the love it needs,” McPherson says. “The building was originally a residence. I really like restaurants in former homes, like at the Waverly. I want it to feel like the 1920s Mediterranean house it was.” MacPherson insists the new Orso will have a published phone number—and diners will not require a personal relationship with an owner to book a primetime table. (Waverly co-owner Graydon Carter, Editor of Vanity Fair, has an assistant in his office that handles reservation requests). “I want to do something that’s a classic,” MacPherson says. “I’m hoping this will be a lasting incarnation. It’s not going to be exclusive.” •

est Hollywood gets a fresh wave of hotelier and restaurateur Sean MacPherson’s magic with the reopening of the legendary Italian eatery Orso on West Third Street, early this fall. “It’s a really personal project for me,” says MacPherson, who grew up in L.A. and is an owner of the impenetrably hip Waverly Inn, The Maritime Hotel and the Bowery Hotel in New York, and Jones, Swingers, El Carmen, Bar Lubitsch, The Roger Room and Good Luck Bar in L.A. “I’m building it very carefully, as if it were my own home,” he says. The last restaurant he opened in L.A. was Jones—and that was 17 years ago. “I was in my 20s, and I opened a place that I would want to go to in my 20s,” he says. “Now I’m building one that I want to go to in my 40s.” MacPherson was a frequent diner at Orso, which opened about 20 years ago and was once a Joe Allen restaurant. With its central location and sprawling patio sheltered from the street by a wood fence and greenery, the promise of alfresco dining at Orso was perennially a big draw. (Certainly for MacPherson, who bemoans the lack of outdoor seating at L.A. restaurants since Michele Lamy closed Les Deux Cafe.) “I want to have a beautiful, romantic garden,” says MacPherson. He lives primarily in New York’s West Village but is spending about half of his time living in L.A. while he works on Orso, and hopes to close a deal for approximately $55 million to take over the Magic Castle property in Hollywood, which includes the Japanese restaurant Yamashiro.

Woman by the Pool, beverly hills hotel, 1975 throughout the vietnam War, los angeles experienced its fair share of local conflict: from the Watts riots to bobby Kennedy’s assassination; the Charles manson murders to the sylmar quake; the violent fallout of the symbionese liberation army to the constant clash between the laPD and sunset boulevard revelers. Photographs from the period reveal a deeply divided l.a. evolving amid the unrest. but, at the beverly hills hotel, the same year saigon fell, artist anthony Friedkin recorded one striking moment of promise in the city.
