e asked. You said, “Yes!” Now, where to go from here? Do you

want a big wedding? Small? Religious ceremony? Garden setting? Stay local or make it a destination event? Simple? Over the top? Too many choices and no one way is right or wrong, so ask

yourself: What does your day say about you as a couple and your

personalities? A classic wedding at the Santa Barbara Mission followed by a dinner for 75 at your parents’ home can be super sweet. A gala affair for 300 in the Beverly Wilshire hotel’s ballroom guarantees a grand soiree. A gathering for 20 at Post Ranch Inn in Big Sur is also a way to kick off your new life together, as is a modern wedding set in San Francisco’s de Young Museum galleries. Don’t get bogged down in the small details. Whether you’re choosing between organza linens for the tables or a bare farmhouse look; lots of candles or none at all; lush, romantic roses and hydrangeas or simple orchids, it is about the overall sentiment of what you are doing that really matters. Marrying your best friend in front of loved ones is the important part of the day! The rest is actually just (pardon the pun) “icing on the cake.” (But, what cake, and icing, to go with?) It’s enough to make your head spin. Relax…we want you to enjoy your engagement and all the planning that goes with it! We have an issue full of inspiration and dream-worthy weddings to take notes from. Each bride featured in this issue, I am sure, had her own panic attack at some point in the process. Yet, at the end of the day, no one was the wiser. In every picture you see the love that radiates between each of them and her beloved. With that in mind, we brainstormed every sort of decision that you can make along the way…from rings to dresses, bridesmaid ensembles to flowers, cakes to favors, the ultimate bridal shower, venues and invites, tips and trends. And, let’s not forget about the honeymoon options (and, of course, what to pack). We present a full vision of all things chic today in our fall/winter bridal spectacular. In the end, on your day, the most important thing the guests will remember is the look on your faces when you kiss as you are presented as husband and wife. The rest—every fabulous detail included—will

hen Krislyn Meyer-Komarov closed her 3rd Street studio last year to focus exclusively on fine arts, fans of her sculptural installations wondered if there would be a successor. To their delight, there were two. Her blessings went to her creative director of seven years, Heather Pando, and apprentice of nine, Manuel Acosta. This fall, the duo transitions Krislyn’s vision into Little World Design. As in the past, Pando and Acosta will forego the shortlived limitations of freshly snipped stems for centerpieces harnessing other natural elements. Regardless of size, the compositions juxtapose the manicured with the wild to dramatic effect: electric turquoise feathers mimicking a bonsai atop perfectly scraggled manzanita; herbs and twigs in orbs of glass; and over-

sized topiaries of rare, soft grasses in the palest celadon (“I was lucky to get the last of that hybrid, ever,” says Pando). The designers are also pushing the boundaries of event and home decor straight into bridal fashion. To adorn a Versailles-worthy wedding dress, for example, they created undulating, spiraling waves of individually pleated paper flowers. “It’s a one-of-a-kind,” beams Acosta of the gown, which required 20 yards of recycled material to construct. Unique, yes, but counting ethereal cotton bouquets as fluffy as clouds and tree-pods “blooming” with hand-carved balsa wood, aren’t they all? 818-642-5829; littleworlddesign.com.

Emily Post, 1892.

Unexpected snafus can threaten to turn the big day into a big disaster. Prepare yourself with the 18th installment of Emily Post’s Etiquette: Manners for a New World (William Morrow, $40, Oct.), co-authored by the conduct connoisseur’s genteel offspring. Here, tips from Peggy Post on tying the knot: DO We now see honor attendants of the opposite sex, mothers escorting their daughters down the aisle and brides not wearing white. DON’T Email or text. A prompt handwritten thank-you note is the only way to express gratitude. ON GIVING No gifts are expected at an engagement party. If given, they are generally tokens of affection. Shower gifts should fit the theme of the fête and shouldn’t be too costly. Wedding presents should be sent before the event (and giving cash

is perfectly acceptable). WHO GETS A PLUS-ONE? A guest who is married, engaged or living with someone. GUEST ATTIRE Err on the side of conservative. Men are always to wear a dark suit, unless it’s black tie (in which case a tuxedo is required). Women may wear white, but “with caution.” THE WORST OFFENSE? Crashing.

his spring, A Soolip Wedding hosted blushing brides-to-be at the Bel-Air Bay Club for an afternoon with a vetted group of the industry’s most extraordinary resources. In a flurry of food and cake tastings, champagne refreshment and expert panel discussions, guests viewed Claire Pettibone’s ethereal “Spirit of the Night” couture gowns complemented by David Yurman’s timeless jewels. Soolip also introduced the “Couple’s Garden” to inspire an environmentally conscious tradition: The affianced pair grows an edible or floral garden together and shares the fruits of their labor with guests on the big day. ow’s this for a sumptuous prewedding fête? Imagine a Saturday afternoon in Malibu, with the bride’s 30 nearest and dearest gathered in a breathtaking, seashell-adorned pool house for an intimate luncheon where champagne and decadent desserts are de rigueur. “It was perfection from A to Z, I have to say,” the guest of honor remembers. Friends and family arrived at the shower to glasses of Nicolas Feuillatte bubbly before taking their places at a long table set with centerpieces by JL Designs. “My favorite part of the day was to sit and see all the wonderful people I’ve met here over the past two years,” says the 26-year-old—a recent L.A. transplant—who wore a pretty, pink Vera Wang dress and Christian Dior pumps. After everyone was served fresh fare created by Cory Martin Events, she was toasted by her future mother- and sister-in-law (the party’s hosts). The day even had its own special soundtrack: a playlist provided by the groom. No corny shower games here; guests were shown to a display of scents by beauty company Ka-mil-yin where they could custom-mix their own fragrances. And for dessert: dainty fruit tarts, cupcakes (by Cupcakes Couture of Manhattan Beach) and a tiered white cake covered in (what else?) shells. “It was one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever been to,” says the soon-to-be-bride. Only to be topped, no doubt, by her actual wedding. •

ho needs three Kitchen-Aids when you can build a wine library instead? In the heart of Napa (and with a high reputation for representing vintner side projects and one-barrel allocations you won’t find anywhere else), the specialists at Acme Fine Wines help couples craft dream registries. But it’s not about scoring a few bottles of Tychson Hill, explains sales consultant Scot Wagner. “A curated list reflects all price points,” he says. Whether choosing daily-drinking (look for newcomer Taken), culty (Hundred Acre, anyone?) or a Madeira laden with decades of dust, Acme will also assist wedding guests through the gifting process. The personalized service can certainly go above and beyond—and creative: “One fellow called with the idea to ship the bride and groom an occasion wine for each of their first five anniversaries,” recalls Wagner. “So every year, we’d put aside that vintage release for Kim and Rob, and off we’d send it on their anniversary week with a note from their friend.” 888-963-0440; acmefinewines.com.

Field Notes Table to farm? Unforgettable wedding feasts await in surreal al fresco locales

E Heath Ceramics settings.

A menu dictated by the season.

Ceremony beneath the oaks at Kunde Estate, Sonoma.

Traditional wine service.

Heritage pork roast.

arly in October, atop Sonoma’s Boot Hill on Kunde Estate, ingredients had changed with the day’s harvest. Chefs scribbled. Courses morphed. For canapes, in came Hog Island oysters, and just-blackening padron peppers, shining with local olive oil and sea salt. Sweet watermelon joined a rainbow of beet and biodynamically-grown tomato. Tableside, a fleet of servers poured Straus cream, in concert, over Frog’s Leap pear galettes. Would you believe this was a wedding? During the public tour of artist Jim Denevan’s Outstanding in the Field, purveyors, winemakers and farmers forage and harvest for a multi-course meal created from their livestock, produce, orchard fruit and dairy. On the first day of spring, tickets sell out instantly for the national progression of one-night-only eating where big-name toques each take a nightly turn. It’s fine dining a la Buñuel—like a restaurant just dropped onto an idyllic Carmel beach or Paso Robles garden for a day. Santa Cruz-based OITF has also spent the past two years crafting private events for anywhere from 20 to 300 guests. Leading the way are Director Katy Oursler, and John Thurmond and Steve Thorlton, co-chefs who met behind the stoves at Blue Hill at Stone Barns, then Ubuntu. Outstanding in the Field Private Events collaborates with couples and secures a venue from a vast network, provides the professional service and rentals, and develops a worth-a-detour tasting down to French-press from Ritual Roasters and Andante Dairy small-batch tommes. That now-iconic communal table—often snaking its way to infinity through a vineyard or sea ranch—is constructed and set. Rusticity finds delicacy. And in a state where the family name might have a winery or farm attached to it, a meaningful wedding is what ultimately matters. “We take on a handful of private events for people to experience seasonality and quality, and cutting-edge menus—often in the context of a place they might already have a connection to,” says Oursler. “The point is not to exclude. If grandma makes great fried chicken, we’ll incorporate it somewhere.” From $245/guest based on head count of 150; outstandinginthefield.com.

COUPLES California’s most illustrious twosomes who found the love of a lifetime

P

By Kelsey McKinnon

erhaps Aristotle was right in saying, “Love is composed of a single soul inhabiting two bodies,” for the mission of finding that Earthly counterpart has been the subject of song, poetry and dreams throughout history. California has long been the romantic stage for such encounters—especially those of the beloved Hollywood stars, politicians, titans of industry and creative minds pictured here. Take Nancy Davis and Ronald Reagan. In 1949, the 28-year-old actress confronted Reagan (then-president of the Screen Actor’s Guild) at a party over the fact that her name was mistakenly included on one of Hollywood’s Communist blacklists. The mix-up was sorted out, and a relationship quickly ensued. Throughout the next 52 years, the couple endured the good (budding film careers, two children, a CA governorship and two terms in the White

House) and the bad (an assassination attempt, battles with cancer and Alzheimer’s). They even published a book together: I Love You, Ronnie: The Letters of Ronald Reagan to Nancy Reagan. Their journey, like many others, started with a simple suggestion over dinner, “Let’s get married.” She responded, “Let’s.” Sometimes, it takes a couple tries to get it right. Natalie Wood and Robert Wagner married in 1957, divorced in 1962 and remarried in 1972 on a boat off Catalina Island to Frank Sinatra’s “The Second Time Around.” And then there are some who never wed at all, like publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst and actress Marion Davies. While Hearst was married to Millicent Wilson (who refused to divorce him), he lived openly with Davies in their many lavish homes (Hearst Castle in San Simeon, Davies’ Beverly Hills estate, Wyntoon in Siskiyou County, the Beach House in Santa Monica and St Donats Castle in Wales). Whichever the course, behind each of California’s great love stories, a soul has indeed found its mate. •

NATALIE WOOD & ROBERT WAGNER At the 20th Century Fox lot, a 10-year-old Natalie Wood met Robert Wagner for the first time, then turned to her mother and said, “I’m going to marry him.” And she did, twice. Here, the couple attends a Hollywood party for producer Frank Taylor in 1960.

igh school sweethearts Eileen Granger and TJ Barracks III wanted only two things for their September nuptials: a gorgeously understated gathering—“not too overdone”—and childhood friend Jose Villa as their photographer. Wishes granted. With the help of creative director/stylist Joy Thigpen, late that sun-soaked afternoon, 220 guests followed Granger’s hand-drawn maps from the ceremony at the historic Old Mission Santa Inés to the Barracks’ Piocho Ranch in Santa Ynez. Overlooking Happy Canyon vineyards and polo fields, they lounged by a bar built to encircle a majestic oak while Tony Ybarra played flamenco guitar. A dinner of rustic-cool elegance then commenced underneath a canopy of trailing succulents and grapevine orbs. The special touches: local olive batards doubling as placecards; gaucho chimichurri inspired by Barracks’ polo-playing travels; pot de crèmes in lieu of formal cake. The laid-back atmosphere continued with a DJ, dancing and the after-party. Finally, the newlyweds hit the highway for Post Ranch Inn to begin a two-week California road trip toward Big Sur and Tomales Bay.•

mily Feld and Jordan Bernstein “have one of those funny stories,” says the bride: Feld met Bernstein’s sister at summer camp in Maine when they were nine years old. They reconnected years later at the University of Michigan, where ’lil sis finally introduced her big bro to her old friend at graduation. “She always said I’d be perfect for her brother,” Feld recounts. Her instincts proved more than right; after a Santa Monica beach-towel proposal, Feld, who works in marketing, and Bernstein, a restaurant attorney, wed last August. “As two individuals who enjoy classic elegance, how could we choose anything but the Beverly Hills Hotel?” asks Feld, who wore a backless Amsale ball gown and had über-planner Mindy Weiss design the affair. Feld and Bernstein exchanged vows in the famed pink lodging’s Crystal Garden under a chuppah of white roses, hydrangeas and greenery by Mark’s Garden. They followed the ceremony with a private poolside moment (“We dipped our feet in the water to get them ready for an evening of dancing!” Feld says). Twenty-four hours after getting down with guests in the hotel’s Crystal Ballroom to the Cowling Band and tunes spun by DJ Mel DeBarge, the couple was off to Bali, where they spent nine days, plus four more in Hong Kong. A perfect escape after a perfect day.•

hen I met my husband, Joshua Groban (not the one you’re thinking of) at a Halloween party in 2008, I was dressed as an astronaut and he was a fireman. In honor of our costume-clad beginning, we asked our 160 guests to bring props to accessorize the photo booth and dance floor when we married in Palm Springs this past February. We picked the intimate setting of the Colony Palms Hotel because it’s where we spent our first weekend away together. I wore a champagne-pink dress from Les Habitudes and rose-gold and diamond earrings designed by my friend Irene Neuwirth. My mother-in-law created the chuppah, complete with antlers and masks from Guatemala. And Joshua’s aunt, the Honorable Carol Isackson, officiated. We then had a three-night starter honeymoon at the San Ysidro Ranch near Santa Barbara, and we’ll take an extended one on the Aeolian Islands— off the coast of Sicily—this fall. •

n a balmy summer night in 2009 atop Amani Point, Nousha Rahnama (a suburban girl from Clovis) and Henry Hagenbuch (a city boy from S.F.) found themselves overlooking the African game savanna at the San Diego Zoo’s Safari Park. Hagenbuch, on one “shaky” knee, proposed with a brilliant-cut sparkler as the wild animals called. Fourteen months later, the L.A.-based couple wed in the civilized splendor of the Burlingame Country Club, just outside San Francisco—where the groom, now a professional tri-athlete, first learned to swim. “We wanted to treat our guests,” says Rahnama, who had relatives fly in from Iran for the black-tie affair. “The English garden setting was very refined, but we had a few surprises,” she says of the Persian dancers welcoming the party into the grand dining hall. Sans planner, it was a creation all their own. Rahnama, a real estate agent, advises, “Focus on what matters to you. For me, having a great photographer was at the top.” And Erin Hearts Court captured every moment of the storied night, including the longstanding Hagenbuch tradition of tossing the groom in the pool. •

or Ashlee Lynn, the morning began with the couple’s typical Saturday stroll down the Santa Monica strand. But then, just a few blocks from home, Matthew Hansen proposed with her grandmother’s diamond in a new custom setting. At nearby Casa del Mar, her boyfriend of four years had planned a surprise brunch with her family (from Palos Verdes) and his (from New York). So when it came time for the August wedding, the beach was an obvious choice—this time at The Jonathan Club. The oceanfront ceremony was officiated by Fr. Robert Beloin, the Chaplain of Saint Thomas More, the Catholic Chapel & Center at Yale, where the pair met in 2005 during the law school’s admitted students weekend. Now in California, the lawyers take advantage of every moment. “We love that we get to pass by the very spot where we said ‘I do’ when we walk our dog [Miley, a wedding present to each other] along the path.” •

truly met my prince charming,” says Jodi Guber, owner and creator of I am Beyond activewear, of her introduction to Seth Brufsky at an art show. A year later, he, senior partner at Ares Management, an alternative investment company, proposed at the end of a scavenger hunt with a Gilan ring and cards from his daughters (Caroline, 11 and Georgia, 8), asking Guber to marry their dad. The pair wed six months later on the beach at One&Only Palmilla, Los Cabos. In a strapless Vera Wang gown, the bride stood under the all-white chuppah as Brufsky tearfully recited his vows with 98 loved ones looking on. “It was so touching,” says Guber, who lives in Malibu with her family. “It was my dream wedding. I have never been happier.” •

Event planner Yifat Oren orchestrated every detail of the two-day affair. The pièce de résistance: a layered lace-and-organza chuppah with hot-pink floral floor.

The Four Seasons, Bora Bora boasts 100 overwater bungalows.

Down the Isle Three South-Seas sanctuaries offer glamorous getaway weddings with a thrill BARBARA KRAFT/FOUR SEASONS

here’s a new reason (besides the thatched-roof overwater bungalows, unbeatable snorkeling and scuba diving, private islands and pristine beaches) to visit Polynesia: The government recently ruled that a legal marriage in this Garden of Eden no longer requires a 30-day residency—great news for non natives looking to wed in island style. For nuptials with all the trimmings, it’s hard to top The Four Seasons, Bora Bora (fourseasons.com). Church weddings are performed in the onsite lagoon-view chapel with Kohu wood ceilings,

while other ceremonies take advantage of the wild “coral” beach facing the Pacific, or the private “motu” (miniature island) as golden sunset emerges from behind Mount Pahia and Mount Otemanu. The honeymoon can include tours in the resort lagoon with the resident marine biologist; jet skiing; and excursions with locally-run Manu Taxi Boats. Wander sand bars to pet friendly stingrays or explore the panoply of fish and snorkel with blacktip reef sharks and spy on 13-foot lemon sharks lurking below. For something a little more secluded, take a 10-minute flight and water taxi to Taha’a’s decidedly non-touristy Le Taha’a Island Resort & Spa (relaischateaux.com). Popular with Italian soccer stars and billionaire Bill Gates, and situated on a private island, the resort evokes a Swiss Family Robinson feel with buildings crafted out of local fishing nets, bamboo and stone. The main lodge suspends almost magically from swooping palm trees.

For Le Taha’a’s traditional Polynesian ceremony, couples, draped in white, take an outrigger canoe to another tiny island, where they’re greeted by a full choir and dancers. Wrapped in a quilt and given tastes of indigenous fruits, couples can swear on the sea to be together forever. If rugged is more your style, try the Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort (hilton.com), fresh off a $2 milion refurbishment. Situated on a peninsula between Cooks Bay and Opunohu Bay, the volcanic island of Moorea overflows with ginger flowers, bougainvillea, gardenia and hibiscus. Offering similar amenities for legal weddings (such as a beach ceremony and cut-to-fit catering) activities are the resort’s biggest draw. Newlyweds have a chance to swim or scuba with whales, discover ancient temples and rent ATVs from Albert Transport to roam lush interior mountains. Slow food devotees can visit vanilla plantations to sample artisanal soursop marmalades, too. Each resort needs at least six months to prepare, and paperwork must be filed three months in advance. But once you’re there, it’s ready, set, “I do.” •

The 8-hour flight is three hours longer than a trip to Hawaii, and Air Tahiti Nui (airtahitinui-usa. com) offers 8 non-stop flights daily from LAX to PPT. Plan on arriving in the evening and spending the night at the waterfront Manava Suite Resort (spmhotels.com) on the main island. Shop downtown Papeete for black pearls (prices are cheaper than at the resort boutiques) before boarding regional carrier Air Tahiti and hopping over to Bora Bora, Taha’a, Huahine, Raiatea or Moorea.

e could have easily added on six months!” says supermodel Maggie Rizer of her twoweek, jet-set honeymoon beginning in Dubai and ending on Mnemba Island, a small safari paradise off the coast of Tanzania. The trip topped off her September wedding—to businessman Alex Mehran— held near Rizer’s childhood home of Watertown, N.Y., at St. Agnes Catholic Church and Lake Placid Lodge. The pair, who now live with their three dogs outside S.F. in Diablo, “knew we wanted to start a family fairly shortly after getting married,” says the now-expecting redhead, “so it was important to us to travel somewhere we wouldn’t necessarily go with young children. We wanted adventure and romance, and certainly got both!”•

T

he Hawaiian honeymoon has, of course, been done before. But never like this. Arrive via one of Hawaiian Airlines’ eight daily nonstop flights to Honolulu and say aloha to the two-year-old St. Regis Princeville—perched atop Kauai’s lush Pu‘u Po‘a bluff with a vista of pristine Hanalei Bay. The 252-room castle in the sky is home to the 11,000-squarefoot Halele‘a Spa, which absolutely lives up to its name (translation: house of joy). For treatments and activities, reservations are a must, whether for tee times at Makai Golf Course (recognized among the nation’s finest links and most difficult), or a table at Makana Terrace for Mailani dinner, which presents traditional Hawaiian delicacies (Kalua Pork, and fresh Lomi Lomi Salmon), ukulele music and hula. The resort’s setting makes a luxurious base for exploring the rest of the island, like the uninhabited Na Pali Coast by chartered catamaran, and the sea-cliff trails by horseback or helicopter. Not so daring? The resort’s 5,000-square-foot infinity pool, dotted with lava-rock stones and butlers standing by, is the perfect place to start married life. stregisprinceville.com.

The finale of the Mailani dinner presentation culminates with a fireknife dance and a fireworks display. RIGHT Bulgari purse, $1,900.

PUT IT IN WRITING The happy couple should also be a thoughtful one. Pack pre-addressed thankyou cards (if even just for the wedding party) to pen on the plane. A stylish design with a simple thought goes a long way.

Lanvin cards, $55/six.

In 1955, 26-year-old Grace Kelly met Prince Rainier III of Monaco at the Cannes Film Festival. The encounter marked the beginning of their lightning-fast courtship: Rainier proposed to the actress with a 12-carat, emerald-cut sparkler, and just one year following their first meeting—and a $2 million dowry paid by Kelly’s family—the royal couple married. Here, Her Serene Highness leaves the MGM studio lot a final time to pursue her real-life fairy tale, never to appear in another film.
