alifornians have style in spades! I feel confident in making that statement as I have witnessed it first-hand, from the chic San Fran streets and soirees full of the Denise Hales, Danielle Steels and Vanessa Gettys of the world…to the Los Angeles contingent of tastemakers like Lisa Eisner, Susan Casden, Minnie Mortimer and Sally Perrin, to name a few. Our women are taking the trends, editing them down to what will work for them, and throwing in a bit of

west-coast vibe to create their own looks. This issue, our big fall fashion focus, marking C’s 6th anniversary, oozes our state’s own special mix of style with page after page. A consistent red-carpet winner, cover girl Kate Bosworth proves that you can be fashion-

able in every situation. Whether making an incognito coffee run or at a premiere, she always looks sensational and knows what’s right for her. In fact, it is with that knowledge that she and her best friend—and stylist, Cher Coulter—have built their own bauble brand, JewelMint, that is taking off in the world of the web. We sat down with Kate to hear how she balances a burgeoning business with her film career. Curating a look is half the fashion battle; when your house reflects your style just as much as your outfit does, you know you have a complete win in the fashion game. Jacqui Getty has aced it. A cool girl to her core, Jacqui’s style is spot-on. The famed hostess invites us in to her über-ultimate world of friends, fashion and fun! Heading north a bit, we present the best of fall’s fashion-gone-prairie trend, bringing you all the looks C shot in the gorgeous fields of the Santa Ynez Valley. Not only about winemaking, the territory is home to horses, rolling hills and thousands of oak trees dotting the vista. What a perfect backdrop for donning designer duds! Another view of style is the one from Belinda and Pascal Levensohn’s home in San Francisco’s Sea Cliff neighborhood. Hiring famed designer Ken Fulk (a CA man who defines S.F. chic), the bungalow now pops with color and a newfound gleam. There’s something so special about our golden light. As our state is drenched in sunshine, designers use it to their best inspirational advantage when creating their collections. With critical acclaim already arriving for Rodarte’s Mulleavy sisters and Monique Lhuillier, we profile four names making a splash—The Row, Gregory Parkinson, Juan Carlos Obando and Jenni Kayne—as the world-wide fashion intelligentsia looks westward. And isn’t that what fashion is about? Creating a stir! Mix it up and make it your own;

think when you’re lucky enough to meet up with a happy accident, it’s easy to turn around and say, ‘Well, everybody gets a chance if you work hard and do what you love,’” Brit Marling explains at a cafe near her Whitley Heights apartment. “But, there are a lot of talented people out there who never meet their happy accident.” This 28-year-old actress, writer and producer isn’t one of them. In 2011 alone, Marling had two feature films accepted into The Sundance Film Festival and sold both to Fox Searchlight. It was an unconventional path for the Chicago native: After graduating from Georgetown University (as class valedictorian) in 2005, the economics major turned down an investment banking position at Goldman Sachs, where she had worked the previous summer. “People think it’s like Liar’s Poker,” she says of her corporate stint, “where everyone’s wearing power suits with shoulder pads and eating fruit out of crystal bowls.” Unimpressed, Marling moved to L.A. instead with some of her old college friends: filmmakers Mike Cahill and Zal Batmanglij. Cahill directed Marling, who co-wrote, co-produced and starred in this summer’s Another Earth, a “cosmic love story” that delves into the concepts of guilt and destiny within the reality of a parallel universe. Produced on a shoestring at Cahill’s parents’ house in Connecticut, the feature is Trojan-horse filmmaking at its best: emotionally vulnerable and deeply thought-provoking. Fox reportedly bought the rights to the film for nearly $3 million. Marling and Batmanglij were simultaneously writing Sound of my Voice, in which Marling plays a charismatic, if not sociopathic, cult leader. Again, without a formal budget, schedule or any permits, they shot the movie around L.A. on a handheld Canon D7. “We just decided one day we were gonna do it,” she says unapologetically, “You really don’t need anyone’s permission.” That can-do spirit led Marling to a role in her first big-budget film which wrapped last spring. Arbitrage, co-stars Richard Gere and Susan Sarandon. In her opinion, “I’m probably not worthy of these opportunities, but I keep telling myself, ‘You better not waste them.’” •

Energy Stars Anti-aging innovators are using electricity to battle our body clocks, leading to sharper memory, firmer skin, easier surgical procedures and reduced fatigue

I

t comes from the wind, the sun’s rays and rushing water. We use it to power ultra-efficient cars and jumpstart failing hearts. Electricity is a topic plenty familiar to Californians, but most people don’t know that it has also become the latest tool to fight aging. By using it to open neurological pathways in the brain, stimulate the musculature of the face, guide a cosmetic surgeon’s sutures in the operating room, and tap into the subtle currents that run throughout the body, the progressive longevity specialists in the state are keeping us looking and feeling younger, longer. “We all have our own electrical fingerprint,” says Montecitobased Melanie Simon, who started her business six years ago with a cellulite-busting endermologie machine—a device that massages and breaks the connective tissue that can lead to bumpy, orange-peel skin—and is now one of the country’s most in-demand aestheticians. “With my treatments, I’m trying to tune into that precise range.” A session with her is unique, to say the least: The arsenal of gadgets that she plugs in and uses to tighten the skin, including a customized ST-8 lymphatic drainage device,

looks straight out of NASA headquarters. The ST-8 machine converts oxygen to ozone, she explains, and pushes the latter’s frequency into the body. The Perfector, another one of her favorites, generates nano- and pico-electrical currents that mimic the natural electrical impulses of the body, and encourages cells to operate optimally, producing collagen and elastin at levels comparable to that of a younger person. Then add in the Arasys, created by the developers of the pacemaker, to charge up the tiny muscles of the face and set the clock back by a few years. Lost yet? You don’t need to understand how it works—just know that it does. The results are temporary but dramatic, creating a firmer jawline and overall perkier face. Even her new skincare line, Circ-Cell, uses pyzo- and piezo-electric minerals to create a very subtle charge, which Simon claims keeps skin cells healthy and happy for 30% longer than their average lifespans. Simon often refers her clients to Dr. Michael Galitzer, a Santa Monica-based anti-aging and bio-energetic medicine specialist. (The two are also collaborating on a new product, ER-3, that imitates the effect of hormone replacement on the skin.)

“People here want to be firing on all cylinders,” says Galitzer, who is Suzanne Somers’ anti-aging guru and a frequent source for her books on the topic. “It’s just part of the lifestyle in California. Most patients come to me with medical concerns, like chronic fatigue, that are difficult to treat with traditional medicine. But about 15% of my patients are people who just want to look their best or feel more youthful.” While most doctors center on identifying and curing disease, Galitzer’s practice is more focused on the nuances of wellness—what he calls a “functional disturbance,” or that feeling of being off-balance or unwell that is hard to pinpoint with blood tests or Melanie Simon, Santa Barbara, 805-403-6056; other diagnostic tools. “I work to re-establish balance beautifulyoumc.com; to the electrical, or energetic pathways that run circcellskincare.com. through our organs, glands and tissues. ith its happy crush of bright-orange William Haines brass-framed seats, a pair of citron silk-covered slipper chairs based on drawings by Tommi Parzinger (a major inspiration), and Venini and Barovier & Toso handblown glass lamps in tutti-frutti Matt Murphy colors, Matt Murphy’s S.F. design gallery is in vivid contrast to the stately antiques stores and historic buildings in San Francisco’s Jackson Square. Matt Murphy Studio is a collection of 20th-century furnishings, accessories, and art—a showroom chock-a-block with works by the Mid-Century designers Murphy admires, in particular T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings, Edward Wormley and, of course, Parzinger. “Matt’s collections are superbly edited,” says interior designer Jay Jeffers. Murphy’s store is also frequented by the likes of S.F. decorators Kathy Geissler Best, Ken Fulk and Fisher Weisman. For four decades Parzinger ran a New York studio that custom made furniture and lighting, and he designed with a pared-down elegance. “I first encountered his style when I unearthed a pair of his lamps at a tag sale,” says Murphy, who was a VP at Pottery Barn and headed up Minneapolis-based Target’s home design department (he also had an antiques store in the city). “They were urn-shaped, Neoclassical and so refined. I still have them in my apartment.” Murphy, instantly obsessed, researched everything he could find on the designer, who passed away in 1981, and eventually introduced himself to Parzinger’s business partner of 40 years, Donald Cameron. He has been a mentor to Murphy, who’s now an expert on Parzinger and often consulted to authenticate his pieces. Recently, Murphy introduced his collection of screenprinted textiles inspired by Parzinger graphics. Made to order, the fabrics can be customized in color and texture. He is also working on a line of embroidered silks and linens. “Parzinger has been a rich and rewarding inspiration for me, and the foundation for my decorating and furniture design,” says Murphy. “Now I’m branching out with more interiors and a new lighting collection.” Matt Murphy Studio, 550 Jackson St., S.F., 415-277-7224; mattmurphystudio.com. •

wanted to create a space that people can dream in,” says Restoration Hardware Chairman and Co-CEO Gary Friedman of the company’s new The Gallery at Beverly Boulevard. The monumental, bi-level retail space provides more than enough ways for “Resto” lovers to do just that. Wander the rooms full of the brand’s ever-evolving collection; smell the posies in floral designer Eddie Zaratsian’s boutique; order an organic oolong from the Bellocq tea atelier, pick up interiors magazines from the bibliotheque and read in the garden beneath 65-year-old olive trees. It’s only one of two new ventures from the design house; Restoration Hardware has also opened doors in Marin to The Baby & Child Gallery. “We’re just warming up,” Friedman says of the firm’s expansion. “You’ll see us moving faster. We’re kind of allergic to the status quo.” The Gallery at Beverly Blvd., 8772 Beverly Blvd., WeHo, 310-652-0323; The Baby & Child Gallery, 1816 Redwood Hwy., Corte Madera, 415-927-2659; restorationhardware.com.

ome people have the uncanny ability to hit that California sweet spot. Call Valerie Gordon one of them. When she tempered her first batch of handdipped chocolate toffee in 2004, “artisanal” wasn’t yet a household phrase, Foodzie.com didn’t exist, and operations for Valerie Confections hinged on phone-order and fax. Even so, the luxury lagniappes quietly became an indulgence of choice at the right dinner parties and wedding celebrations across the Golden State. In the seven years since that debut, the business has expanded in a gourmet swirl of high-design truffles and elegant compotes, tea scones and petits fours. There have been a few surprises along the way, too. In 2009, for a “dream weddings” story for Los Angeles Times Magazine, food editor Lora Zarubin included Gordon’s rendition of a Blum’s Coffee Crunch Cake bestrewn with flavored honeycomb. “I grew up with this cake in San Francisco, and I couldn’t find it,” explains the South Carthay resident, who launched her company with partner Stan Weightman Jr. “Blum’s and Fantasia Bakery were these fantastical dessert houses—my Disneyland.” (The pastry shops serving the now-vanished treat had closed in the 1970s or been sold.) Ever the researcher, Gordon pored over the menu collection in Central Library’s Rare Book Room downtown. She tested versions of the coffee cake. She wanted to discover the taste of nostalgia. Immediately after the Times story ran, Gordon received a clamor of 150 calls and orders for this edible memoir of lost San Francisco. A logical next step? The Classic Cakes line—think Chasen’s, Brown Derby, Bullock’s Wilshire Tea Room—“to preserve,” she says, “quality items of our golden era that are iconic and timeless.” While Gordon puts finishing touches on Scandia’s legendary apple cake for a fall release, she’s also cultivating Valerie at the Market, another unexpected sensation that launched at the Hollywood and Santa Monica Farmers’ Markets in 2010—an unlikely time to expand amid a soured economy. From a Silverlake boutique and kitchen not much larger than her signature ribbon-tied boxes, Gordon and crew work in choreographed production, generally devoting cool mornings to chocolate-making and afternoons to continuous prep and fillings and doughs (plus white-glove tea catering and select wholesale accounts). They source thrice weekly and bake six days a week to accommodate the lengthy menu emailed on Thursdays. On weekends, Weightman CONTINUED ON PAGE 190 and staff attend to a charming

Yet, here, versatile microclimates have attracted vintners at Pahlmeyer and Far Niente, and oenological success dates even prior to Cedar Knoll’s silver medal at the 1889 Paris Exposition. With the Coombsville AVA sub-appellation expected to pass late this summer, protected status—85% of grapes must be grown within its bounds—arrives for a once-nameless region now having its moment in the sun.

he audience at Cannes International Film Festival rose for a fiveminute standing ovation after the premiere of Restless, the latest from director Gus Van Sant (Good Will Hunting, Milk), and producers Brian Grazer, Bryce Dallas Howard and her father, Ron Howard. In the film, Annabel Cotton (Mia Wasikowska), a terminally ill cancer patient, meets Enoch Brae (Henry Hopper, son of the late Dennis Hopper), a jaded misfit who has recently lost his parents. With the world closing in on them, a love grows through a brave and heartwarming injection of life. Sony Pictures Classics, Sept. 16.

Love, Passion, Drama

S

till on a high following the company’s critically acclaimed, sold-out presentation of Wagner’s magnificent “Ring” cycle in June, San Francisco Opera kicks off an exciting 2011/2012 season at the War Memorial Opera House on September 9 with a glittering gala and the presentation of Turandot—with sets by artist David Hockney—under the baton of conductor Nicola Luisotti. The 89th season will also premiere a number of works: a new production premiere of Mozart’s Don Giovanni; the company premieres of Handel’s Xerxes and Donizetti’s Lucrezia Borgia, starring Renée Fleming; and a fresh production premiere of Mozart’s The Magic Flute. Vividly conjuring the intrigues of

Imperial China, Hockney’s extravagantly luscious stage design (first unveiled in 1993) for Puccini’s famed unfinished work will be a highlight of the packed lineup. Swedish soprano Iréne Theorin, considered by many to be the world’s reigning Turandot, plays the lead, while Marco Berti, as Calaf, performs “Nessun Dorma,” the Pavarotti-popularized ode to eternal love and honor. The same motifs of passion, friendship and heroic virtue arrive in different form the next evening, on September 10, when the curtain rises for an anticipated, newly commissioned Heart of a Soldier (in commemoration of the 10th anniversary of September 11). The moving contemporary opera, by composer Christopher Theofanidis with a libretto written by

Donna DiNovelli, is based on James B. Stewart’s 2002 book and reflects on the true tale of Rick Rescorla, a soldier who fought in Vietnam, married his soul mate, Susan, and gave up his own life saving thousands just before the twin towers were destroyed. Amid the unimaginable chaos that morning, Rescorla used his commanding presence and booming voice to literally sing his colleagues down smoke-filled stairs and out of the building. After he successfully evacuated all of his company’s 2,700 employees from the South Tower before it collapsed, Rescorla made the ultimate sacrifice and went back inside to search for stragglers. Theofanidis translates words to score with a traditional orchestra and adds elements including electric guitar and

synthesizer, as well as a large choral presence. He evokes idioms of American classical music along with Cornish ballads and 20th-century pop-rock influences. Theofanidis explains: “The tone is lyrical and has a great deal of humor woven throughout, which is part of the humanity these characters bring to the story.” The cast will feature distinguished baritone Thomas Hampson as Rescorla, tenor William Burden as his wartime buddy Daniel J. Hill, and soprano Melody Moore as Rescorla’s wife. (Susan Rescorla is expected

to attend as a guest of opera company General Director David Gockley for the opening night.) “On the surface, Heart of a Soldier is about what it takes to be a true hero, but the opera is driven by the passion, the suspense, and the ultimate tragedy,” says Gockley. “When I read Stewart’s true story of an unsung hero of 9/11, its epic themes of a warrior’s code of honor, intense bonds of loyalty, late-found love and overwhelming tragedy struck me as extremely theatrical,” says Artistic Adviser Francesca Zambello,

who will direct. “It also explores ideas and ideals, morals and morality in the context of modern American lives.” Heart of a Soldier will be presented in seven performances through September 30, but Gockley’s commitment to presenting new works continues in future seasons with composer Mark Adamo’s The Gospel of Mary Magdalene, scheduled to open in June, 2013, as well as Jake Heggie’s Moby-Dick in Fall, 2012. 301 Van Ness Ave., San Francisco, 415-8643330; sfopera.com. •

Jacqui Getty keeps her elegant Hollywood home filled with personal treasures, cool art and always plenty of friends

ink is the color of the new chapter in Jacqui Getty’s house. Not the candy or Harlequin hues that once adorned the walls in her daughter’s teenage bedroom, but a softer, more delicate shade that can be found in the bunches of peonies and dahlias throughout her Spanish-style Hollywood home. This isn’t to say Getty only has one hue on her palette. Her style would never be so monochromatic. As a friend of hers puts it, “When it comes to Jacqui’s house, there is no template.” The same could be said of her life. Though born in New York, Getty lived in Rome and Napa Valley before settling down with daughter Gia Coppola (Francis Ford Coppola is Gia’s grandfather) in this hilltop house. Over the past 20 years, Getty has juggled being a mom and a stylist (pop culture fact: she chose the black Thierry Mugler dress Getty wears Demi Moore wore in Indecent Proposal), a a vintage caftan costume designer (she worked with Academy in her backyard. Interiors Styling: Award-winning Milena Canonero on the 2007 Breezy movie The Darjeeling Limited), and becoming one of the town’s alpha hostesses. And what a perfect match for such personality and talent Getty’s house is. It was built in a neighborhood of the Hollywood Hills which, back in the ’20s, was designed to look like a Mediterranean-style village complete with winding roads and lush greenery. An escape from the growing urban sprawl in the flats below, Whitley Heights immediately became desirable to movie stars looking for European charm and an alternative to the trim lawns and predictability of Hancock Park. Valentino and Marlene Dietrich all lived up here, and it’s not a big stretch to say there’s still something of that earlier glamorous era in the air. Almost a century later the neighborhood remains an arty enclave and bohemian dazzle stills rules the day. This is a canvas Getty knows how to paint, and it all begins with space and light. One of the most appealing things about the house is that it can be both intimate and spacious—as if it can contract or expand given the occasion. If it’s just a few friends having cappuccinos at the simple wooden kitchen table, there’s a clubhouse-cozy air; if it’s a large affair, guests won’t feel crowded. This isn’t accidental. Getty sets multiple inviting areas throughout her home. No room is off-limits or too precious, so the entire house becomes the stage for a party. Friends might end up chatting away, sprawled on the bed in the upstairs master bedroom, or congregating in the living room as someone improvises on the piano. They might linger around the dining room’s Italian monastery table, or continue the conversation while relaxing on boho-chic backyard chaises with Hermès blankets, over-sized pillows and fur rugs. The other crucial element Getty gets right: lighting. It’s often said in L.A. (some attribute this quote to hotelier/restaurateur Sean MacPherson), “Life comes down to good timing and good lighting.” The flattering daytime environment in Getty’s home can be credited to the site and the green garden she maintains around it. “Actually,” she laughs, “I let it get a little wild. I like it looking like a jungle.” The nighttime ambience comes from the soft glow of globe lamps on the dining room sideboard, the sparkle from the chandeliers and, of course, a multitude of candles, including those in the red coral silver-based candleholders designed by friend Sandy Hill. Rain can be L.A.’s social deal-breaker, especially at night if one is heading up onto twisting, narrow, slippery roads where mudslides and falling rocks are an actual possibility. Even in a storm, no one cancelled on an invitation to a legendary Getty Halloween bash. She recalls when Kate Moss showed up with photographer Mario Testino, and another guest was dressed in costume as Moss. So, too, was a reveler dressed in costume as Johnny Ramone alongside the real thing. “So many people have passed through. And raising my daughter here, so many good memories…and many more to come.” Can’t help but think that Lombard, Valentino and Dietrich would all approve. •

“It’s taking control of my career, but it’s also something I love to do,” Bosworth says about her new ventures. “I’m very hands-on.”

O

n a recent Sunday morning, Kate Bosworth bounds into the lobby of Palihouse, the West Hollywood hotel, looking sunny and stunning with her wet blond hair twisted into a bun and her face freshly scrubbed. She wears a seemingly effortless-yet-chic outfit: an Isabel Marant red knit sweater, a denim skirt designed by her friend Sienna Miller, tan suede booties and a cream-hued Alexander Wang bag. If it weren’t for the tiniest blemish on Bosworth’s chin, she would hardly seem human—particularly with her famous cat-like eyes, one hazel and one blue. “I’ve never been happier than I am now,” says the 28-year-old actress who rocketed to fame in 2002 as the surfing star of instant cult-classic Blue Crush. After that, her biggest movie roles have been as the pretty woman next to the powerful man, like Sandra Dee in Beyond the Sea and Lois Lane in Superman Returns. That’s all changing now. Lately, Bosworth’s parts have been considerably less beachy. She endured major bruising while shooting a rape scene for Straw Dogs, a remake of the 1971 Sam Peckinpah film, which opens this month. Coming out soon after: Another Happy Day, the debut feature film from writer/director Sam Levinson, in which Bosworth plays a self-mutilator. As if that double-whammy weren’t enough, she just wrapped Black Rock, a thriller rife with beatings by mystery creatures on an island in Maine. Oh, and this autumn, Bosworth begins shooting Fairy Tale of New York, where she falls in love with Kiefer Sutherland while dying of a terminal illness. “Clearly there’s a pattern here,” Bosworth laughs as she shows off pictures on her BlackBerry of her and co-star Lake Bell’s makeupenhanced bruised faces from the Black Rock set. As Bosworth approaches 30, she’s taking on more than just physical tests. She’s starting to produce movies with her female writer/director pals and has her eye on writing and directing. She just returned from a two-week trip to London and France to meet with financiers for Lost Girls and Love Hotels, a feature she’s producing that will shoot in Japan. Plus, she’s about to leave for Italy to do a movie by one her best friends, Kat Coiro. Bosworth is a producer on the yet untitled film with a $150,000 budget. She’ll be doing her own hair, makeup and styling on the shoot. “It’s taking control of my career, but it’s also something I love to do,” Bosworth says about her new ventures. “I’m very hands-on.” Bosworth has always been a perfectionist. Growing up in Connecticut, she was a child equestrian champion, a skill that landed her first role, at age 14, in The Horse Whisperer opposite Scarlett Johansson. (Bosworth used a family Christmas card as a

headshot to get the audition.) Accepted at Princeton University, she chose to pursue her acting career in L.A. instead of matriculating. She doesn’t regret the decision, although she wouldn’t mind taking some classes in creative writing, literature and psychology. “I’m into understanding the human psyche,” says Bosworth, who admired Natalie Portman’s performance as a ballerina losing her mind in Black Swan. “I’m into understanding love and pain and everything in between.” She certainly had to plumb some depths for Straw Dogs, where her character, Amy, is raped on screen by Charlie, played by Alexander Skarsgård (he’s also the hunky vampire Eric Northman on HBO’s “True Blood”). They met two years ago on the film’s rural Louisiana set and have been dating on and off ever since. She doesn’t like talking about their relationship but lets it slip that she spent last August visiting his homeland of Sweden, where his father, Stellan, is one of the country’s most famous actors. “People want to know about my personal life, and I understand that, but there’s so little preserved when you live in the public eye,” says Bosworth, who weathered a particularly painful and public breakup with Orlando Bloom when she was in her early twenties. “My intention is to lead a healthy existence and protect that.” Another crucial part of that existence includes riding horses up to four days a week when she’s in town, dining at her favorite restaurant, il Ristorante di Giorgio Baldi in Santa Monica, and taking weekend trips to places like the San Ysidro Ranch in Santa Barbara. She’s also an avid reader. Whenever she travels, she packs a suitcase of books she might want to option for movies. (She’ll only read scripts on her iPad.) Fashion is another outlet. Her favorite designers include Proenza Schouler, Rodarte, Olivier Theyskens, Stella McCartney and Vanessa Bruno, whose fall European ad campaign stars Bosworth. She’ll also appear in a short launching September 9 on Bruno’s website. It was directed by Jean-Marc Vallée, who’s doing Lost Girls and Love Hotels. Last fall, Bosworth and her longtime friend and stylist, Cher Coulter, launched JewelMint.com, an online, membership-based costume jewelry boutique developed with MySpace co-founder Josh Berman. (“Kate brings the elegance, and I bring the fashion knowledge,” says Coulter.) So far, about 22,000 people pay a $29.99 monthly fee to pick a bauble every few weeks. “Wherever I am, I go to local markets and antiques shops for inspiration,” says Bosworth. “It’s been a really fun project.” At Palihouse, Bosworth wears a pair of JewelMint dangly silver earrings with yellow beads that she describes as “sunny-side up.” The same could be said for her—no matter how she appears on the big screen this fall. •

he beginning of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s label will go down as fashion lore: a quest to make a T-shirt. Not just any, but the tee—a single-seamed top made of luxurious jersey. That was in 2007. They named their collection The Row, after London’s Savile Row, and, considering the sisters’ impeccably tailored fall collection, the moniker has never been more fitting than now. The brand has grown into an impressive— and influential—ready-to-wear line with eyewear and now handbags (also look for their collaboration with Santa Monica-based Toms Shoes this season). True, The Row operates mostly out of New York. But the Olsens grew up in California, and one can’t help but see their native state’s influences in the duo’s designs (fall’s loose white sweater over an ankle-skimming skirt) and, of course, their own signature boho-chic style. •

y look is very versatile,” says Gregory Parkinson, “and I dress many different types of women.” Meaning, you can spot his vivid creations on everyone from the coolest girls on Abbot Kinney—they really know how to rock his maxi looks—to Michelle Obama, who, earlier this year, chose a tie-dyed pink-and-purple leopard-print skirt from his spring 2011 collection. (And soon, with a special capsule collection, you can find his work in Anthropologie). The British-born Parkinson, who arrived in L.A. in 1989 and has quietly been turning out his line since 1994, makes clothes that are anything but reserved; he uses multitudes of hues in all manner of patterns—whimsically mixed—to make pretty, feminine silhouettes (fall’s perfect metallic lace-appliquéd trench, for one). It doesn’t hurt, either, that they’re wearable no matter the month. “That’s something that is always part of the way Californians dress,” Parkinson says. Not to mention, timeless. “Having a life of more than one season in a woman’s wardrobe is an accomplishment.” •

Juan Carlos Obando ust a few years back, Juan Carlos Obando was at the top of the advertising world as creative director of an agency. Literally—his Century City office had breathtaking views of L.A. But by night, he was cutting fabric for dress samples on the firm’s conference table. Two years ago, Obando left to be a full-time designer, “from a high-rise job to the wilderness of fashion,” he says. Now, Obando, who hails from Colombia, is situated in a Silverlake studio, where you might find him hand-dying fabrics for his collection. “Here, you’re more focused,” he says, considering the upside of being based in California—as opposed to New FROM LEFT Vest with Swarovski crystal York or Europe. “We lock ourselves harness, $7,495, in for months. But it’s an informal—and very west coast—spirit he’s after. “I want a woman to be comfortable so she can be at a party and dance and drink, not just sit and be pretty. She looks super dressed-up,” says Obando, “but can go eat a taco afterward.” Doesn’t get more California than that. •

And, the collection is always influenced by California because I’m such a California girl,” says the native Angeleno. That girl takes a trip to the countryside (“somewhere on the east coast or in Tahoe, perhaps,”) with chic coats, cozy knits and trousers this season. She throws in a little ’90s nostalgia with minimalist bias-cut silk skirts and dresses in peacock and red-wine shades. Kayne launched her label with a 30-piece collection in 2003, when she was just 19 and opened her West Hollywood store in 2007. How has the line evolved? “As I get older, it changes with my life,” Kayne says. hen San Francisco fashion stylist Belinda Levensohn saw the Sea Cliff house, it was love at first sight. Fortunately, it was a clear day with no summer fog. Otherwise, this story might have had an entirely different outcome. “I was captivated by its refined Spanish architecture, the Pacific, the beach, the sun gleaming on the water,” recalls Belinda. “We wanted a special house with dramatic views. This was the one.” Belinda and her husband, Pascal—founder of Levensohn Venture Partners, an S.F.-based venture capital and advisory firm—had spent two years in search of a home overlooking the panoramic San Francisco Bay and Headlands. (They are the parents of Amanda, 19, an anthropology major at UCLA, and Marshall, 17, a high school senior.) “In a real estate ad, I happened to find a pretty picture of a small, primrose-colored 1937 bungalow in Sea Cliff, so I dashed out to see it,” Belinda recalls. “We loved its bones. It was neglected, but full of potential. We made the winning bid.” The Levensohns assembled their team of contractor Ben Rogne, architect Ken Linsteadt and interior designer Ken Fulk to update the decor and give the abode a more gracious feeling. They would take the architecture back to its Spanish-Moorish roots. “My background and our extensive travels in Spain and around the Mediterranean were a great foundation for developing a very specific and personal concept,” says Belinda, who was formerly the fashion director for Macy’s West. “I wanted the house to be a jewel box.” Fulk and his associate, designer Brian Anderson, worked closely with her to enhance the home’s innate CONTINUED ON PAGE 190

mid a regular trend parade that would keep Bill Cunningham perpetually buying double the film, imagine what happens when Milano Moda Donna (cameramoda.it)—the ready-to-wear shows (September 21-27)—converges in Milan. Taking time to experience the metropolis’ fashion is as essential as ascending the Duomo, and near the monolithic cathedral, its sartorial heritage thrives. In lavish Via Montenapoleone quarter, Milanese names such as Giorgio Armani, Dolce & Gabbana, Etro, Missoni and Prada have built huge flagships near the glittery arcade Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. Other spots where fashion intersects design and art: the Brera district’s antiques and flea markets along Via Fiori Chiari; and the intensely curated 10 Corso Como (10corsocomo.com), housing everything from Nicholas Kirkwood heels to Riccardo Schweizer tabletop in a sanctum of style by gallerist Carla Sozzani (sister to equally influential Vogue Italia editor-in-chief Franca Sozzani). It’s like the European rendition of Maxfield if it joined Opening Ceremony, merged with Taschen and took a layout like Fred Segal. Also in Corso, the lobby’s dreamy paper-cloud lights float with Cheap & Chic confidence at newcomer Maison Moschino by Hotelphilosophy (maisonmoschino.com)—one in a growing fashioninteriors-lodging niche. Maison’s 65 rooms are decorated in 16 outlandishly bold schemes (think dripping with “ivy”). Meanwhile, Bulgari Hotel Milan (bulgarihotels.com) is, hands down, the place for a drink if you fancy an actual garden. For fashion-meets-arts, seek out public works and permanent collections hosted by nonprofits Fondazione Nicola Trussardi (fondazionenicola trussardi.com) and Fondazione Prada (fondazione prada.org). And, you can still catch Anglo-Indian sculptor Anish Kapoor’s installation at Rotonda di Via Besana (anishkapoor.com) through October 9. Or, explore Hangar Bicocca (hangarbicocca.it). At this contemporary exhibition space set in an industrial park north of the city, it’s an afternoon break away from Fashion Week frenzy.

Youth bronze statue from the Getty Villa, however, the area has seen a bit of celebrity. Rightfully so—the land is abundant with gourmet truffles, unspoiled Renaissance and Roman architecture built into pistachio-hued hillsides, plus big-ticket retail. How big? Common sights on the azure waters off Ancona are luxury boats sailing in from the Mediterranean. If you want to custom-build a mega- or super-yacht, contact Ancona’s Ferretti-brand CRN (www.crn-yacht.com) for one hand-built, piece by piece. On land, beach resorts dot the Riviera del Conero. Look for quaint-yet-luxe Hotel Emilia (hotelemilia.com) and Hotel Fortino Napoleonico (hotelfortino.it)—a converted military fortress from 1811—and sleepy trattorias serving fried olives and just-plucked mussels. Farther north, and closer to cultural hotspots like the preserved town of Urbino—birthplace of Raphael—there’s the fresh Hotel Excelsior, Pesaro (preferredhotels.com). True craftsmanship also extends from the 15th-century wood marquetry at Palazzo Ducale to the area’s celebrated industry. Marche is land of the shoe, and at Casette d’Ete’s silvery-sleek headquarters for Tod’s (tods.com), watch shoemakers hammering studs into those iconic driving moccasins. Then, take your new pair for a test spin to the impressive Prada outlet down the way.

n Florence, tradition is what’s modern, and there’s more to a romantic autumn than just the Ponte Vecchio. Discover new additions to time-honored perfume houses at the 19th-century railway station Stazione Leopolda when Pitti Immagine Fragranze (pittimmagine.com)—the international beauty fair from the organizers of summer’s Uomo and W tradeshows—arrives September 9-11. Or, stroll Via dei Calzaiuoli, a centuries-old garment quarter and site of the city’s first bazaar, now home to Coin department store and extravagant retail. The avenue empties to Piazza della Signoria, where Gucci Museo (gucci.com)—an archive dating to Guccio Gucci’s 1920 leather shop—cuts its (red-andgreen) ribbon September 26. On the equally prime Via de’Tornabuoni, unforgettable boutiques for hometown heroes Roberto Cavalli and Emilio Pucci scream with color and pattern alongside glam homes for the likes of Pomellato and Buccellati. At Museo Salvatore Ferragamo (museoferragamo.it), put on your best cork wedges for a rich history (he lived in Santa Barbara and L.A. before moving to Florence) as expressed with a staggering 14,000 models of footwear. Have the concierge at the newly renovated St. Regis, Florence (stregis.com)—an overhauled palace with a grand past as a stopover for nobility—make you a reservation. Of course, for a fine arts and old masters fix, the columned Palazzo Corsini will host the 27th Biennale Internazionale Dell’Antiquariato Di Firenze (mostraantiquariato.it; October 1-9)—like a Basel for sumptuous Italian relics. As antiques and handmade works can be brought back to the States duty-free, and with more than 3,000 items for sale, authentication and consult on export (including how to expedite them), veni, vidi, veci… •

steel, fiber-optically lighted device) is used to weave a trampoline-like support system below the chin like a shoelace—all leading to a more defined jawline and neck. If the light shines yellow through the skin (similar to how a flashlight makes the skin glow warmly when it’s pressed against your hand), the sutures are shallow enough to cause minimal tissue damage and bleeding. If the suture-rod goes too deep, the light becomes red. What was once an invasive, inconsistent procedure has been streamlined. Incisions are tiny, the length of surgery is cut in half and recovery time is minimal. The technology can also be used on the forehead to successfully lift brows in a less traumatic way. “You can do all the patch work you want,” adds Blume, referring to our obsession with quick-fixes like injectable fillers and Botox. “But if you look like you’re in your forties at 55, and yet you can’t remember names and go blank, you’re not going to seem young.” •

market pavilion constantly restocked with all manner of pies, galettes, savory hand tarts, larder preserves, cookies and Viennoiserie in illustration of famed aesthete Baron de Rede’s protocol that a tray never goes empty. “We’d always planned to integrate baked goods,” she explains, “but we literally sell hundreds of pastries each time.” Part of the excitement she attributes to a shift in the perception of fine dining: “Restaurants are all using market stuff. No one wants to eat Smuckers anymore.” (And who would want to with 40 grown-up alternatives like White Fig-Pear-Vanilla Bean or Finger Lime?) Much of Gordon’s talent lies in her ability to stay on-point, so outside collaborations have allowed her freedom “to work with aesthetics that don’t specifically fit our banner.” Take Halloween, 2007, when she teamed up with N.Y.-based trailblazer Douglas Little (then of D.L.&Co.) for the Mori Ex Cacao—“death by chocolate”—line of miniature skulls in exotic

scorched caramel and chili, $40 apiece, set in gorgeous black-satin-lined boxes. (As Little unveils a new eponymous brand later this year, keep an eye out for more cacao curiosities.) There was also her holiday, 2010 collaboration with Roman Alonso of Commune Design: a limited run of 72% bittersweet squares in a Byzantine pattern with a coordinating cardboard box. The autumn, 2011 encore promises a Super-Choco-Food bar stuffed with enticing ingredients, “slightly renegade packaging” and a multi-media component. She’ll continue on with the new American Tea Room in Beverly Hills, where gold tins filled with blends matching her signature flavors rest on wellmerchandized shelves. And if expecting her second child weren’t enough, she’s adopted a peach tree from Masumoto Family Farm alongside former W editorturned-canning expert Kevin West. And then, the side projects: writing her definitive dessert recipe and entertaining tome for Artisan Books; readying a hard goods line of desserts stands and tea/ coffee service, and stretching her creative muscle with more bespoke catering. While curating this broad collection, she never forgets her California muse: “We’re a company you might have seen 40 years ago, and hopefully you’ll see 40 years from now. I’ve tried to stay away from things completely of the moment and be stylistically true to the golden era, to Hollywood—a place I’ve always looked to for classic, simple, beautiful design.” valerieconfections.com. •

beauty. “We kept all of the fundamental components of the architecture and accentuated them so that they ultimately conveyed its spirit,” says Fulk. “The groin-vaulted ceiling in the entry is part of its vital language. We hand-stenciled the living room beams and they now look integral to the decor.” The new ocean blue-green plaster walls in the living room, accented with fuchsia silk and tasseled turquoise silk pillows, were a masterstroke. “I believe there was an audible gasp

when I mentioned the concept of the wall color,” says Fulk. “I felt strongly that the room could handle it, and in fact needed it. With its scale and double height, the space felt a bit too cavernous.” The complex hue unites the seascape and landscape and imbues a tranquil mood. “The Golden Gate Bridge and the rugged Headlands are a hypnotic presence out the living room windows, so it also needed formidable seating,” says Fulk. He and the Levensohns chose a pair of Chesterfield-style, deep-seated sofas upholstered in waxed linen. “The natural textile pulls them back from feeling too stuffy. In a velvet, they would have been just too formal,” Fulk says. “And the carved, gilded feet just make you smile.” Beautiful, harmonious walls became a significant feature throughout the house. Willem Racké Studio used traditional hand-applied and polished Venetian techniques and custom-mixed colors. During the two-year renovation, the Levensohns made significant improvements, all aimed toward subtle rearrangements so that the house now looks as if it has always been glamorous and light-filled. The most sophisticated creation might just be the spacious master bedroom. In collaboration with the architect, Fulk and Anderson crafted a compelling dreamscape. The walls are plastered in exquisite pale lavender-gray with a trace of fog. The new master bathroom, carved out of a former crawl space beneath the eaves, embraces the heartbreakingly beautiful ocean vista. The walls are covered floor to ceiling in Moroccan ogee-shaped, hand-painted metallic tiles. “I wanted to give the bathroom a luminescent quality,” says Fulk. There are no hard edges. Doorways and openings have soft arches. A tub offers views of the full moon glimmering over the East Bay hills. The completed house, with its confident style and happy color statements, has created a halo effect. “Belinda and Pascal and I have become, first and foremost, dear friends,” says Fulk. “I now sit on the board of the San Francisco SPCA with Belinda. Pascal is an inspiration. He is passionate about life, his family and all those he loves.” With the house now completed, Belinda is focusing on Ruby Style, her new consulting company. “Our home is the perfect background for everything that is to come,” she says. “It’s so comfortable. It’s like a house that has been in the family for decades, now with great style.” •

Once billed as the next Audrey Hepburn, Jacqueline Bisset certainly looked the part and was already a big star by the 1970s after roles in Casino Royale (1966) and Bullitt (1968). The British beauty is still working today, though she never lived up to those lofty expectations (maybe that should be left to her goddaughter Angelina Jolie). Photographer Terry O’Neill, who took this shot of the doe-eyed actress on the beach in Malibu, looks back: “No, she never did go on to become the new Audrey Hepburn. But tell me, who did?”
