here is something about a sparkler that makes me unable to help myself! When I see a beautiful cocktail ring or to-die-for necklace, my heart skips a beat. The workmanship, the artistry, the design—it all adds up to perfection. With this issue focused on all that glitters (in jewels and in every other facet of life), we present some of the best
baubles and watches around. I wish I could own every piece that passed through our office, but, alas, I know that would only be a fantasy. (No harm in daydreaming, though!) If I were to fall head first into another world, it would be into the land of Tony Duquette and
his imaginative home, Dawnridge. Duquette created strong pieces of jewelry that defined his era. That Duquette’s business partner, Hutton Wilkinson, has carried the name and tradition on—and continues to define and refine it—speaks volumes. The art Wilkinson creates today is just as magical, and we take you inside the aesthetic the duo created. Speaking of beauty, I don’t think there is a more gorgeous creature out there than our cover girl, actress Freida Pinto. Without a stitch of makeup, she glows! And once we put on some finishing touches, the entire crew on set was breathless. With every shot, her inner beauty (and, yes, her outer) shined…much like a jewel! And since we are all a sucker for the sort, we present our fashion portfolio: the best in baubles paired with a sophisticated wardrobe of suiting worn in an oh-so-feminine way. Perhaps it’s a good starting-off point when considering your upcoming holiday wish list? There are so many other categories to celebrate in this issue, from a fabulous farm-to-table gathering in Malibu—waited upon by the most adorable surfer boys you have seen—and the chicest clutches about to hit the market, to the two Parisian hotels you can’t miss on your next European jaunt. We strike a high note with San Francisco’s famed Symphony commemorating 100 years, and we escape to the most divine Ojai home for under-the-radar elegance. Our editors continue to present aspects of the Golden State that are sure to whet your whistle—or like my

wenty-two was a big year for Petra Ecclestone: She got married in a castle outside of Rome, relocated to Los Angeles (to the former Spelling mansion, no less) and, this winter, launches a line of exotic clutches. Largely influenced by artist Tracey Emin, her Stark collection is edgier than what you might expect from the blond-tressed heiress— with plenty of alligator, python and signature gold panther emblems mixed in. “I studied art, and it inspires me,” says the young Briton, whose idea of a perfect afternoon now includes visiting The Getty Center, shopping at Maxfield and grabbing a bite at Madeo. Imagine what might happen at 23. From $495; starkltd.co.uk.

ontrary to popular belief, not every member of the Missoni clan is tied to the family business. While Jennifer Goldie Diamante Missoni grew up in Varese, Italy, where the knitwear brand is based and where her father Luca was the menswear designer, her future would be on the stage and on screen. Missoni attended drama camps in the U.S. before entering the prestigious Idyllwild Arts Academy at 17. She finished her musical theater degree at The American School in Switzerland. Now, the 26-year-old actress splits her time between L.A. and New York with appearances in Off-Broadway productions and television shows such as “Damages,” “Law & Order” and “Gossip Girl.” Missoni also recently wrapped her first feature film, Playback, with Christian Slater. “My character’s name is Dee Dee. She’s very proper and responsible,” explains the actress. “What attracted me to this role was the opportunity to portray someone so unlike myself.” Missoni may be the kind of girl who does her shopping in town (usually at Coquette Atelier on Melrose Place), but she’s definitely got a Westside vibe: “I go to the beach at sunset when it’s chilly and almost deserted. I put in my earphones and dance as if no one was watching.” • Missoni, photographed at the Milan apartment of her grandparents, Ottavio and Rosita.

S
onia Boyajian is a bit of an accessories outlier. The L.A. native makes chunky bracelets and rings with handmade ceramic beads, necklaces dripping with quartz, odd, amusing charms and quirky little hats. Her bold necklaces are like never-ending stories—the more you look at them, the more questions you have. “It’s really important to be able to view an object and see beauty in every direction,” she says. Trained at Otis College of Art and Design and then as an apprentice in Antwerp with jeweler Pascale Masselis, she began selling her wares after a visit to Paris fashion week in 2001. “I tend to work with shops that are owned by very strong women,” says Boyajian, who operates out of a studio in her Hollywood backyard. In L.A., Mameg sells some of her rare, one-of-a-kind pieces; in S.F., Susan is a longtime exhibitor. Other boutiques are as far-flung as Maryam Nassir Zadeh in N.Y. and Gago in Provence. Boyajian’s site (handcraftedweddings.com) allows brides to buy fine jewelry, wire-wrapped engagement rings and offbeat feather fascinators. Her spring/summer collection—in a palette of tomato-red, black and orange— was inspired by Bulgari, ancient civilizations and Persian weapons. Then there is her newest project: a line of painted dishware that she’s showing to previous collaborator, Anthropologie. “It’s very me— taking something old and childlike and making it sophisticated.” soniabstyle.com. •

In 1821, at a horse race in Paris, Nicolas Rieussec successfully tested his revolutionary invention that allowed time to be recorded to an accuracy of a fifth of a second. The chronograph was born. Today, the Montblanc TimeWalker Chronograph Automatic is a tribute to 190 years of the chronograph’s technical evolution. 43 mm stainless steel case, skelleted horns and sapphire crystal back, black dial with red gold-plated hands and indexes. Icy Reception Touted as the “King of Diamonds” for a remarkable ability to acquire some of the most enormous, rare gems in the world, Graff lands in San Francisco this month with the opening of its sixth U.S. outpost. “Not only does it complete our presence in the United States,” says President and CEO Henri Barguirdjian, “but it also ties in beautifully with our expansion in Asia.” (the company plans to open in Hangzhou, China next year.) For the S.F. location, architect Peter Marino took cues from the British jeweler’s Madison Avenue flagship and used classic touches such as goatskin-lined walls, French walnut paneling and Cippolino marble floors. Standouts like the Fancy Intense Yellow cushion-cut diamond ring and pear-shaped Colombianemerald earrings will be available along with engagement rings and timepieces. 237 Post St., S.F.; graffdiamonds.com.

alvatore Ferragamo, though linked to Hollywood for the past eight decades by its shoes, has long been a sartorial sleeping beauty. It was not until last year, when the Florentine luxury house entrusted its rich heritage to Massimiliano Giornetti—appointing him creative director—that a reawakening of the storied label began. Case in point: This past June, Giornetti jetted to New York for a staging of Ferragamo’s first-ever resort fashion show. A stylish set of the brand’s celebrity friends, including Eva Mendes, Freida Pinto, Minka Kelly, Ashley Greene and Emma Roberts, were “transported” to an Italian palazzo as they entered a magnificent BeauxArts mansion on the Upper East Side that was once home to the iconic Duke family. The new Ferragamo image only hints at its old world movie-star lineage, hearkening to the days when Salvatore created shoes for Marilyn Monroe, Marlene Dietrich, Audrey Hepburn and Greta Garbo. No longer does the name conjure just a Gancini buckle flat, and Giornetti’s immediate impact is evident. He has created a sleek practicality, from a gold-and-ivory cashmere striped sweater and fringed skirt to a silver-and-gray silk evening gown—looks ideal for bonfires on Carbon Beach, opening night at the S.F. Symphony or dinner at Eli Broad’s. “I was fascinated by the aesthetic of the 1930s—sensual and elegant but at the same time very dynamic,” says Giornetti, who has other reasons to celebrate: Only hours before speaking with C, the company had gone public with an IPO. Additionally, this month welcomes the debut of Ferragamo’s first jewelry collection (see “What’s Hot”). He hopes to visit California more often as well. “What I love is the attitude,” he says. “It’s very Italian in a way, for me, because Italian taste and Italian flavor are very chic but always toned down.” ferragamo.com. •

Perfect for any California girl, it has no age barriers— any woman is sure to make the most of it. Just toning down the lip, for example, can take this from day to evening."

CHRISTIAN LIAIGRE: LUC BOEGLY
“He’s kept a low profile over the past years, working with a lot of private clients,” says Jennifer Ridel, decorator and owner of the new interiors store Community & Co., of furniture designer Charles Hollis Jones. “I got wind that he wanted to make a comeback.” Now, her just-opened shop is the only place in L.A. where you’ll find new designs by Jones, famed for his craftsmanship with Lucite. Ridel also carries his vintage works— bar carts, lamps and makeup mirrors to name a few. “They’re timeless. Even pieces from the ’60s and ’70s are relevant. I’m blown away by how well they work in houses today.” Thomas Lavin feels the same about interior designer Christian Liaigre’s collection. “It doesn’t matter if it’s a contemporary or traditional-style home. His pieces take on the personality of the room,” says Lavin, who has the exclusive on Liaigre for all of Southern California and Nevada at his eponymous Pacific Design Center showroom in West Hollywood. A couple of his favorite pieces: the bronze coffee table and the “super luxe and stunning” Aspre sofa. “Liaigre’s overall aesthetic is so sophisticated and elevated but still accessible,” Lavin says. Just as exciting as having the exclusive on a big name like Jones or Liaigre is being the one to discover and sell a lesser-known name or newcomer on the scene. Antonio Ametrano of S.F.’s Hedge Gallery seeks out recent graduates from schools like the Rhode Island School of Design, where he found “incredible industrial designer” Aaron Silverstein. Hedge is now selling the Marin native’s folding tables and benches and his Piriformis coffee table, made of corian. Also at the gallery: British porcelain fabricator Tanya Gomez, who went to the Royal College of Art in London. “Her vessels are decorative but have become conversation starters. They are magnets for attention.” •

HOT PROPERTIES Author Michael Gross—whose 740 Park details New York’s toniest apartment building— now takes his revealing pen to Los Angeles: From Greystone to Greenacres to The Knoll, Unreal Estate (Broadway, $28) chronicles 16 of the city’s greatest manses and the families (think Doheny, Fairbanks) who lived in them.
House Proud Founding editor of the much-loved (and missed) Domino magazine, Deborah Needleman has written a witty guide, illustrated with watercolors by Virginia Johnson, to designing a house that’s both stylish and livable. Here, a few of Needleman’s must-try tips from The Perfectly Imperfect Home (Clarkson Potter, $30): NICE LIGHTING In the words of decorator Kathryn Ireland, “Ask any woman to name one overhead light she considers her ally.” Beautiful rooms tend to have soft pools of light that come from a variety of sources. The goal is to create a sense of depth, seducing the eye with highlights and lowlights. BATH AS A ROOM Your lav need not shine like some hygienic lab. Include some actual furniture (like the kind you stick in other rooms), maybe even a patinaed old piece or two. As in any other room, you want to warm up the space and imbue it with the feeling of a welllived life. GLAMIFICATIONS Glamour is an essential excess, the icing on the cake. You don’t need to overdo it, but you can’t be wimpy: That chandelier or that mirror or wallpaper has to assert itself loudly and clearly. Glamour is not meek.

On this overcast fall evening, you can find Henderson— private chef, author of The Swedish Table and former model—in her home kitchen, arranging slim grissini next to just-picked figs. The enamelware filled with herb-flecked butternut squash is ready to go next to bamboo steamers of lacquered cod. Sweet-salty date butter accompanies olive bread fresh from her baker, Trevor Grossman, and large peach-cornmeal cakes (“like an upside-down tarte tatin,” she explains) cover her kitchen table. In the vein of Outstanding in the Field, progressive neighborhood fêtes and today’s underground urban supper clubs, Henderson and business partner Netti Bode’s Malibu Farm dinners have transformed her backyard into a de facto restaurant for residents and purveyors. With practically all of the organically grown ingredients harvested then and there, supplemented with artisanal edibles, she’s demonstrating a growing food culture in this seaside hamlet. (Note this year’s resurrection of the Malibu
Farmers’ Market and the garden focus of the Trancas Country Market under development as further evidence.) “I’m being approached because everybody wants to participate. The word spreads with the produce,” she says. “That’s how the lady with the goats found us.” On the eve of her second meal series, a white tablecloth is set for 66 on the lawn. Clusters of friends seem to recognize each other as people from all industries—music, film, real estate, politics—mingle. Guests (those not in stilettos, that is) wander terraced garden levels to discover hors d’oeuvres created from local treasures such as house-cured honey gravlax on crostini and chilled dill “pickle” soup. The crowd is attended to by towheaded young servers. And yes, at Malibu Farm, it’s ok to feed the pets. The $100-a-plate dinners sell out within a few hours. And this month, Henderson and Bode continue with cooking classes and Thanksgiving weekend feasts on November 18 and 19. n global gastronomy, René Redzepi (Noma), Massimo Bottura (Osteria Francescana), Alex Atala (D.O.M.) and Iñaki Aizpitarte (Le Chateaubriand) have at least two things in common: Their restaurants all made the top 10 of 2011’s San Pellegrino World’s 50 Best Restaurants. They’re also part of an elite band of roving chefs. Formed in 2009, Cook it Raw convenes periodically in remote locations to forage and prepare spectacular, sustainable feasts. Of its dozen or so participants, one hails from California soil. Daniel Patterson—the two Michelin-starred chef/owner of S.F.’s Coi and Oakland’s Plum—will head to Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan later this month. There, he’ll connect with nature as he previously did in Collio, Copenhagen and Lapland. Toques, for example, get lost in the woodlands and emerge with bags of rare oddities like elk moss and forest fungi

Each talent then works magic with his bounty: Momofuku’s David Chang and Combal Zero’s Davide Scabin have served reindeer milk with just-caught salmon and Lapland dashi, while Patterson has used open-fire techniques for baked beetroot with reindeer blood, juniper, wild blueberries, half-dried lingonberries and sorrel. Back in the Bay Area, it’s a busy fall; Patterson’s in the midst of opening Plum Bar (adjacent to Plum on Broadway),
and, over at Jack London Square, he’s working with Kim Alter (formerly of Plate Shop) on forthcoming eatery Haven. Horse Whisperer Katie Upton’s lifelong passion jumps off the canvas
BILL DEWEY

rtist Katie Upton resides in a pastoral sphere: a home in a converted barn on two acres near the Mission in Santa Barbara, and on the foothill trails she lopes up in the afternoons. She also spends long hours in her studio. Upton paints images of horses—always horses. Sometimes she works quickly; other times, it’s a labor. But the finished piece always veers far from traditional sporting portraits—those stern, briskly formal images mired in environment. Instead, rootless and suspended in space, Upton’s acrylic icons appear ready to breathe, toss their >>

manes, snort and whinny. Painted to life-size, they dominate a room, practically emitting a musky smell. “I draw from my collective consciousness,” declares Upton, shyly. At the age of three, she started riding her brothers’ horses at her family’s Santa Barbara home; Upton’s parents, fearing for her safety, quickly bought a pony. From then on it was a love affair. She spent a few years competing, and
countless days in Rattlesnake Canyon, Tunnel Trail, and Parma Park near Montecito. Time spent among these animals gave her an encyclopedic memory of their nature and form. “I absorb all that stuff,” says Upton. “I have this storage of all this energy and spirit and all the things they posses somehow inside of me.” She adds, “To draw them is like a feast.” Classically trained as a fine artist at the

University of California, Santa Barbara, Upton began professionally drawing the equine in charcoal in 1989. She then delved into oils and now uses acrylics to paint not only abstract renditions of colts and mares, but also commissioned portraits and images of famous racers, such as Secretariat and the now retired champion Zenyatta. Along the way, the 53-year-old gathered quite a following in the international equestrian community. “She’s popular among breeders, trainers, lovers and owners— people specifically connected with horses on a personal basis,” says Christine Crocker, a merchandise manager at Santa Anita Park. Crocker bought her own Upton, the likeness of a Palomino against a vivid blue background, after discovering the artist online. “She strips it all away and gives you the essence,” says Crocker. Claudia Winters, a self-proclaimed “horse nut” and competitor who lives on 130 acres near Rhinebeck, New York, owns three gigantic Uptons. “It’s like living inside with a horse,” she says. “My Black Horse #2 is so majestic and his eyes are so soft. an Francisco is naturally and temperamentally a musical city,” said New York conductor Walter Damrosch when he visited in 1901. “What it needs is a good orchestra.” It took many voices and several bond bills passed by San Franciscans to create and house what would become a world-renowned ensemble. And when the merry gala goers spilled out of Davies Symphony Hall this past September, they had something to celebrate: 100 years of stellar classical music, thanks to a strong tradition of civic support. In 1911, the first official orchestra formed out of the ashes of the 1906 earthquake and performed at the Cort Theatre on Ellis Street; tickets cost 15 cents. Today the prices are a little higher, but so are the honorable distinctions: The 104-person company was the first U.S. symphony to hire female musicians (besides harpists) in 1923; it has produced numerous award-winning recordings; and it has always played outside the “music box” by collaborating with bands from Metallica to the Grateful Dead. Over the years, SFS has been molded by the hands of a variety of visionaries, includ-
ing the charming Henry Hadley, virtuoso Alfred Hertz, Pierre Monteux (who led the first performance of Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du Printemps), Viennese maestro Josef Krips, hotshot Seiji Ozawa, and now 11th conductor Michael Tilson Thomas—known as MTT. Through the reincarnations, however, the one constant has been an enthusiastic, involved spectator. A passionate fan named Kathryn Roberts passed around a hat to keep the baton in Hertz’s hand in 1922; the Volunteer Council runs the annual Black and White Ball to bring in funds; and in the past decade, patrons Evelyn and Walter Haas have played a key role in the MTT-narrated “Keeping Score,” a program for PBS designed to make classical composers accessible to unlikely audiences. Executive Director Brent Assink says he “wanted to honor the community and reflect that back” with a daring 2011/2012 schedule chock full of marquee performances and lesser-known composers, semi-staged productions with visual elements, a cycle of American Mavericks concerts and a weeklong residency at Carnegie Hall. “The distinctive CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT characteristic of the Bay Area is Concertgoers on their way to the centennial patrons’ a willingness to be flexible and dinner. Music Director Alfred take chances. And that’s also how Hertz and the SFS in 1922. Michael Tilson Thomas. I would describe the symphony,” This year’s symphony supper at City Hall. he says. sfsymphony.org. •
2011/2012 Hitting the High Notes Three upcoming SFS centennial programs epitomize West Coast spirit: The American Orchestra Series is a wonderful excuse for some of the country’s largest and oldest groups to present work that reflects their expertise. The Boston Symphony Orchestra (Dec. 6-7), Chicago Symphony Orchestra (Feb. 14-15, 2012), and New York Philharmonic (May 13-14, 2012) will all make rare visits. • The American Mavericks Festival glorifies original voices of composition, many of whom have a strong association with MTT. Four world premiere scores are on the bill from John Adams, Mason Bates, Meredith Monk and Morton Subotnick. March, 2012. • Barbary Coast and Beyond: Music from San Francisco’s Gold Rush Days dusts off pieces from the mid-1800s to 1911 with costumes, set design and imagery as accents. May, 2012.

by another pivotal lead in director/artist Julian Schnabel’s Miral. This time, she played an orphaned Palestinian girl in the center of the Arab-Israeli conflict during the First Intifada. It was filmed on location in the streets of Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and in the tumultuous West Bank, where Pinto (raised Catholic) became fully conscious of the film’s political relevancy and issues of gender discrimination. “I had been to Afghanistan and there was a good Muslim population at school growing up,” she says. “I feel these [Arab] women are either misrepresented or not represented at all.” Earning praise and confidence, she was well prepared, so she thought, for Black Gold, which premieres next month. Filmed in Tunisia, Black Gold is a period drama about the discovery of Middle Eastern oil in the 1930s. On the eve of the Arab Spring, Pinto traveled to Hammamet, just outside of Tunis, and almost immediately found herself in the midst of an uprising.
“I have no idea where I came from. I’m a gypsy. Today, someone asked me where I live, and I was like, ‘I haven’t had a place in two years.’” With homemade bombs exploding in the capital city about 40 miles away, Pinto and co-star Antonio Banderas were two of the cast members who decided to stay. “The biggest terrorist attacks in Bombay took place during Slumdog time, and I wasn’t even in my city, so I felt this responsibility to stay back and support some of the people and friends I’d made in Tunis,” she says. After a safe and successful wrap, the film has impacted her view on whether “the discovery of oil has really benefited these Middle Eastern countries or caused their doom,” she says. “I mean, look at Iran…” The political warfare continues this month with her latest release, but it’s of the mythical sort that is best viewed in 3D. Immortals recounts the tale of the Greek warrior prince Theseus who battles against imprisoned Titans in CONTINUED ON PAGE 127

here did you come from, Freida Pinto? It’s a question that, these days, has no answer: “I have no idea where I came from. I’m a gypsy. Today, someone asked me where I live, and I was like, ‘I haven’t had a place in two years.’” Director Danny Boyle can certainly be credited with discovering the 27-year-old starlet, and since his 2008 hit Slumdog Millionaire, Pinto has been thrust into the public consciousness. Yet, after beating out thousands of girls for the film’s role of Latika, Pinto is essentially homeless and living out of three suitcases. Nomadic citizenry is, perhaps, the price for instant international stardom; Pinto bounces between London (her boyfriend, and Slumdog co-star, Dev Patel lives there), New York and her family’s apartment in Mumbai. This week, she’s staying at L’Ermitage Hotel in Beverly Hills before heading down to Comic-Con in San Diego. Pinto, as it turns out, hails from and is to some degree based in Mumbai—which she still refers to as Bombay (the sign of a true local). She and her older sister grew up in a middle-class suburb just beyond the urban sprawl. Her mother was a school headmistress and her father was a senior branch manager at the Bank of Baroda. Ironically, her native city is the only place in the world where she can still navigate public transit and shopping centers largely unnoticed. Even with four films out this year and an international ad campaign with L’Oréal, she’s overlooked by locals more concerned with the billion-dollar Bollywood industry. “I’m not not doing a Bollywood film,” she says. “I’m looking for Indian-language films that are more parallel to cinema.” She found one last spring in Trishna, a Michael Winterbottom adaptation of the classic novel Tess of the D’Urbervilles that was shot in Rajasthan. In addition to British English, Pinto speaks a colloquial version of Hindi and had to learn a completely new dialect to play the lead. She takes pride in her background, so much to say that “modern India can sometimes be shockingly more progressive than modern America,” but not so far as to submit to being typecast as the sari-clad “Indian girl.” After Slumdog, Woody Allen cast her in a small, yet important role in You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger, which was followed

“My designs always spring from imagination
eauty, not luxury, is what I value,” says fine jewelry designer and interior designer Hutton Wilkinson. One look at the magnificent, one-of-a-kind necklaces, brooches, bracelets, rings and earrings in the style visionary’s new book, Tony Duquette/Hutton Wilkinson Jewelry (Abrams, $50), confirms that Wilkinson embraces this credo while honoring the legacy of his late friend and business partner of 30 years. A famed MGM production designer, internationally renowned decorator and creator of fine jewelry, Tony Duquette died in 1999 at 85. As president and designer of the Tony Duquette Collection of jewelry, Wilkinson (who developed his aesthetic while studying the antique gems of his mother, daughter of a Bolivian president and Spanish noble) is entrusted with that sparkling heritage. Pieces that Duquette fashioned for the Duchess of Windsor, trailblazing decorator Elsie de Wolfe, movie stars like Sharon Stone and members of high society became instant treasures and are held in private collections around the world. The April auction of Duquette and Wilkinson’s “Talismans of Power” at Bonhams & Butterfields in Los Angeles sold out all 135 lots for a total of over $350,000. “Tony and Hutton, to my mind, create fantasy jewels that are bold in scale and a startling blend of color, texture and substance,” says Lisa Hubbard, North and South American chairman of Sotheby’s International Jewelry. “Hutton’s designs for the Tony Duquette Collection recall the magic of old Hollywood,” says Ron Frasch, president and chief merchandising officer of Saks Fifth Avenue. Indeed, Wilkinson’s bold looks feature gumball-sized, candy-colored and cabochon-cut rubies, emeralds and tourmalines combined with rough stones and uncut gems. Set in 18-karat gold, these baubles are often CONTINUED ON PAGE 127

ictoria Pearson was once a regular at fast-paced photo shoots in Los Angeles. These days, though, she’s more likely focusing her lens on inviting interiors and appetizing eats, working out of her home studio. She made the 1940s Ojai Valley farmhouse, which she shares with her husband, chiropractor Brett Laymance, and her 18-year-old stepson, Marshall (stepson Trevor, 22, recently flew the nest), her full-time residence 10 years ago. “My recent work is more aligned with my personality,” she says of projects for glossy shelter magazines. “I’m lucky I found my niche.” Pearson’s proclivity for domesticity is also evident in her own home, where walls are washed with a white paint she customized by adding a dash of ochre for warmth. The palette is offset by rich textures: woven baskets, sisal rugs and dark wood accents. “I love, love, love color,” she says, “but I use neutrals because it gives me a sense of peace. And it’s full of possibility!” While wall art is sparse, the pieces that make the cut are those that call to Pearson, such as local artist Katie Van Horne’s large painting of an eagle; a vibrant landscape nestled in the living room’s floorto-ceiling bookcase; and enlarged images of lemons and avocados that she snapped herself. Mounted elk antlers in the living room and master bedroom are a nod to Laymance’s fondness for hunting and the outdoors, while the Asian accents reflect Pearson’s extensive treks abroad. “I drag things home from my travels,” she explains. Of all the rooms in the abode, “the kitchen is where we really live,” she says of the welcoming hub, outfitted with a cozy fireplace, a white oak dining table from Crate & Barrel and cabinets brimming with a sizeable collection of white English ironstone dishes. Her studio and guest house is “comfy for family and friends but practical for shooting,” Pearson says of its sliding barn doors that, when open, usher in light from a quiet, pea-graveled courtyard. Pearson collaborated with local landscape designer Paul Hendershot to create her garden—mainly green, sculptural plants intermixed with white roses. Pearson says she’s continually moving things around. “I’m always looking for harmony, balance and functionality,” she says. The result is fresh and inviting—and a constant work in progress. •

PF is a terminal disease that causes progressive, incurable lung scarring and an irreversible loss of the lung tissue’s ability to transport oxygen. There is no known cause for this disease and it strikes randomly – no one is safe. Two-thirds of PF patients die within five years, and approximately 40,000 patients die each year.

It is the ultimate in fine jewelry.” (The collection is sold at select Saks Fifth Avenue trunk shows and at tonyduquette.com.) tically glam bib necklace blending amethyst, abalone, azurite, carved jade and malachite beads with perforated, gold-plated aluminum plaques sourced from dismantled vegetable steamers. “Tony pioneered recycling and the luxurious repurposing of humble materials for fine jewelry back in the 1960s,” Wilkinson notes. Today, Wilkinson haunts estate jewelry dealers for elements to incorporate into his one-of-a-kind designs, which are manufactured in New York by a master craftsman. Take, for example, Wilkinson’s “Pond Scum” suite. Composed of malachite stalactite slices set in 18-karat gold and festooned with faceted citrines, emerald and pale green tourmaline beads, these ornaments embody a pond’s glistening surfaces and murky depths while shimmering with naturally Baroque, majestic chic. Gazing into the scum-free lagoon in the garden of Dawnridge, Duquette’s former home in Beverly Hills and now headquarters of Wilkinson’s design businesses, he observes, “My designs always spring from imagination and the natural beauty of materials at hand, rather than from arbitrary definitions of luxury.” •

SOPHIA LOREN, 1965 “Sex appeal is 50% what you’ve got and 50% what people think you’ve got,” Sophia Loren once said. Though she never left much to the imagination, the numbers were certainly adding up for the actress in 1965: She was 30 years old and had already appeared in 62 films, she was nominated for her second Academy Award for Marriage Italian Style and had just been paid one million dollars to star in The Fall of the Roman Empire.
