he holidays (yes!)—time with friends and family, trips to tropical locales or cold, snowy mountains, and, for the dramatic, the stirring of Hollywood hoopla and the awards madness about to ensue. After New Year’s Eve, it actually starts to feel like its own holiday season-within-the-season—let the parties and fashion begin! We honor the art that makes our state famous, and we celebrate such endeavors in this winter issue of C.
Our cover girl Kirsten Dunst is already a silver-screen veteran at the young age of 29. Having
starred in some 50 movies to date, she is a rare breed—a child actor who has successfully crossed over and blossomed into a full-blown talent. Dunst has carefully selected her roles, and her most recent one has all of Tinseltown talking (and Cannes, too; she won the Best Actress award there for her performance in Melancholia). With nomination whispers growing louder, we thought she was the “best actress” to celebrate in this special issue. Back in 1931, Samuel Goldwyn had the insight to bring Coco Chanel to Hollywood to design costumes. He knew what the world was discovering—that she oozed chic—and wanted to harness her talent for his studio and its movies. We take you inside Justine Picardie’s new book Chanel: Her Life to focus on the legend’s California hiatus (from her French fashion empire). As the label is still the go-to brand by today’s actresses, Mr. Goldwyn was clearly way ahead of the fashion game. A hark back to that glamorous era, a trip on a boat was still considered the finest way to travel. And there was none more impressive to board than The Queen Mary! Now permanently anchored in Long Beach, it was the perfect cinematic backdrop for Resort’s nautical inspired trend (“Ship Shape,” p.138). As cinema isn’t the only art we create, we also wanted to focus on a Northern California painter. Ira Yeager’s highly coveted work can be seen in many a major collector’s home, and when it came time to peek inside his own, we found his studio and abode as charming and personal as it can get. ouis Vuitton’s 2012 cruise collection looks exactly like what you’d get if a cool California girl with some Francophilic tendencies mixed her casual-chic style with what a young Parisienne may have worn in the '60s or '70s. Is it any surprise, then, to learn that Sofia Coppola had a hand in designing the line? Here’s how it happened: Last summer, Vuitton Studio Design Director Julie de Libran customized some cruise pieces for Coppola to wear at the Venice Film Festival— there are certain perks to being friends with the company’s Creative Director, Marc Jacobs—and during the promotion of her last picture, Somewhere (the house made her a sequined, striped T-shirt dress for the premiere). When it came time for this season’s looks, she was an obvious muse and collaborator. Coppola sent de Libran a few favorite pieces from her closet to give the studio a feel for what she likes. Not that her style is any secret—the Academy Award-nominated director is almost as famous and revered for her laid-back style as she is for her movies. She doesn’t “like to feel like I’m in a costume or over-dressed.” The result is a collection of “pretty, simple dresses,” playful prints, wide-leg trousers, witty shoes, pops of red and, of course, practical-yet-luxe totes, purses and pochettes (Coppola debuted her handbag line for Vuitton in 2008). s he develops his acclaimed San Francisco restaurant, Benu, which opened August, 2010, Corey Lee continues to augment his artistry with custom-crafted dinnerware. “I couldn’t be limited to existing pieces to serve food,” says the former chef de cuisine at French Laundry. “That stifles the possibilities.” To fill in difficult design gaps, through Le Sanctuaire he teamed up with Jungbae E of Blueoculus—a La Jolla designer who’d been creating fixtures for S.F.’s aptly-
named professional culinary store. In autumn, 2009, the duo began with necessities: simple utensil rests. Of the smooth ovals, Lee says, “It’s a sensory experience beyond function. People pick it up, start to notice it. If they don’t—it’s still there since we don’t have tablecloths.” JB adds, “To discover design for yourself is a lot more meaningful than a list of instructions.” Take Benu’s new specialoccasion cake service—a glowing blackwalnut music box presented to the table. As the diner turns the crank, a mechanism plays the celebratory song. The lights extinguish when the top lifts off to reveal a dessert plate underneath. Today, the tasting menu at Benu runs

Chaired by Lilly Tartikoff Karatz, Nancy Marks, Maria Arena Bell, and Edye and Eli Broad, MOCA’s Art Talks (formerly named Salons by the Shore), moved east this year. A new cadre of collectors offered their homes to host Deitch’s one-hour conversations, and LVMH sponsored all three events. “Last year we tried it with Richard Prince, and this year we wanted to do a full year,” says LVMH Senior Vice President Charles Delapalme. Proceeds from the event’s $750 tickets benefit MOCA’s education programs and a newly minted LVMH Visiting Artist program, which brings artists face-to-face with young students. The idea is a perfect complement to the close-knit circle of patrons attending these fêtes. Larry Gagosian welcomed guests to his A. Quincy Jones residence in Holmby Hills for a tête-àtête with John Currin; the painter explained how he found himself inspired by Danish porn. At Tartikoff Karatz’s English Tudor manse in Bel Air, contemporary icon Ed Ruscha told Michael Chow that his Mr. Chow L.A., 1973, was originally done in soy sauce. And at the final salon at Deitch’s home, the museum

director led an informal tour, pointing out a funky Man Ray chandelier made out of hangers and Michel Gondry’s mixedmedia piece that lives inside a piano. After fresh fruits and quiche, Kruger, known for her graphic overlays of words and images, explained her deep suspicion of photography, its misuse and abuse, and her obsession with power hierarchy and the corruption of money. Guests were rapt. From television mastermind Darren Star to interior designer Kelly Wearstler, titans of their industries had an unmatched opportunity to get up close and personal with often-reticent virtuosos. “Jeffrey knows these artists as friends,” says Gagosian Gallery Director Deborah McLeod. “He walks them through their lives, not just their work—and we’re all interested in that.” After the guests had gone, Deitch plopped on the sofa and got a far-off look in his eyes: “What people don’t realize is that there is a lot of prep. We spend a lot of time with the artists, talking about it first. And I’m already thinking about next year…” •

ith all the mumbo jumbo about who wore what better, and who just broke up with whom, it’s easy to forget that there is actual talent in Hollywood. Take Kirsten Dunst. She has played some amazing and indelible parts in her 22 years as an actress. There was the young bloodsucker in 1994’s Interview with the Vampire, when Dunst was 12 and long before the undead became the industry’s go-to blockbuster generator. She was the sullen and beautiful Lux Lisbon in Sofia Coppola’s 1999 feature debut, The Virgin Suicides; the on-edge heroine in 2001’s teen drama Crazy/Beautiful; and Mary Jane Watson in Spider-Man 1, 2 and 3. Then came the divisive Marie Antoinette— also by Coppola—casting her as the French queen partying to a soundtrack of New Order and Siouxsie and the Banshees. “People come up to me all the time and tell me it’s one of their favorite movies,” the actress says over lunch near her Manhattan apartment (she sold her house in L.A.’s Nichols Canyon not too long ago). Though the fashion companies come acalling—Rodarte’s Pasadena-based Mulleavy sisters are among her closest friends—for some unexplained reason, Dunst hasn’t become a critic’s or awards show darling. The nadir: 2011’s Cannes Film Festival, watching von Trier self-destruct after making a Hitler joke at a press conference. Her stunned reaction—and whose wouldn’t be?—hit all the major papers and became a minor YouTube phenomenon. “I didn’t realize how see-through I was sitting there,” Dunst says. “There are certain things Lars says or does that you could take offense to. On set, I laughed at a lot of it. When it came down to working, he couldn’t have been a more supportive director.” Then there was the zenith: winning the Best Actress award at that same festival, placing her in a small pantheon of international thespians including Katharine Hepburn, Vanessa Redgrave, Helen Mirren and Meryl Streep. “Pretty epic,” Dunst says. “That’s a special award. No one’s getting anything because of any political reasons, especially in my case because of what happened [at the press conference]. I felt such gratitude to experience it at 29 and be able to take in the moment of being up there. Robert De Niro says, ‘The Best Actress goes to Kirsten Dunst.’ That’s a big thing, to have Bobby D. say that.” Hollywood award-givers might not respond to a sinister and slightly cerebral picture from von Trier in the same way as the Europeans. These days, the phone may be ringing off the hook, but roles don’t arrive on a silver platter. “I’d get calls to come in and audition for things and I was like, ‘I just won best actress at Cannes!’” Dunst laughs. very day, artist Ira Yeager wakes with the sparrows and works until dusk in his paint-spattered Napa Valley studio. As sunlight flickers through tall windows, he paints dramatic and alluring Native Americans, elegant French princes from the 1700s, Golden State landscapes and Swedish countesses at costume balls. “History for me stopped in 1812,” says the prolific Yeager, “and I’m besotted with 18th-century Sweden and France and long-ago California. I love the romance of that period, the fantasy. It’s topped with a jaunty cupola that lights up like a magic lantern on a summer afternoon. Half a mile away, but still on Yeager’s land, and surrounded by manzanitas, stands the red barn, assembled from a Swedish-style kit shipped west from Alabama. “I dream up houses and iconic farm buildings and Richard turns them into sun-filled structures,” says Yeager. “I see an image of a Gustavian pavilion in a design book, and want to build it, decorate it with my antiques, have parties.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 154 On weekends, friends from San Francisco and the

TAKING A PAGE FROM HER NEW BOOK CHANEL: HER LIFE, AUTHOR JUSTINE PICARDIE TELLS THE TALE OF THE DESIGNER’S STINT IN TINSELTOWN
O
n 19th January, 1931, film producer Samuel Goldwyn announced in Paris that Coco Chanel was coming to Hollywood. “After more than three years of constant effort, I have at last persuaded Madame [sic] Gabrielle Chanel, fashion dictator, to go to Hollywood to co-operate with me on the vexing question of film fashions,” he told The New York Times. Goldwyn’s plan was a bold one. As the Great Depression tightened its grip on America and unemployment spread to a quarter of the workforce, he still believed that millions of people would want Hollywood entertainment at its most escapist and alluring. Goldwyn was determined to sign up Chanel and ensure that his film stars were dressed in cutting-edge Paris fashions, both on screen and off. It was not the first time that her designs had been seen on a Hollywood actress—Ina Claire wore a striking Chanel black suit trimmed with red fox fur in The Royal Family of Broadway, released by Paramount in 1930—but the deal with Goldwyn represented a far more significant role for Chanel. According to The New York Times, “She will reorganize the dressmaking department of United Artists studios and anticipate fashions six months ahead, solving thereby the eternal problem of keeping gowns up to date…Thus, Madame Chanel may reveal the secret of all impending changes and the American women will be enabled to see the latest Paris fashions, perhaps, at times, before Paris itself knows them.” It was an ambitious, costly and time-consuming project. Goldwyn had been wooing Chanel ever since meeting her with the Grand Duke Dmitri in 1929. According to an American
journalist, who had interviewed Goldwyn for Collier’s magazine in 1931, “It all started in Monte Carlo. The Grand Duke Dmitri, of the Romanovs, quite casually introduced Samuel Goldwyn, of the movies, to Mlle. Gabrielle Chanel of Chanel. Pleasant talk, pleasant compliments, big inspiration, big contract—and the great Chanel had agreed to come to Hollywood to design clothes for the movies. Admittedly, it’s an experiment, a gamble, but on a million-dollar scale.” In fact, the gamble cost far more than that. Goldwyn had finally secured Chanel’s agreement to the deal, after some lengthy hesitation on her part, by guaranteeing her a contract of $1 million. But further outlay was necessary, not least for the special costume department that he set up for her at his studios, employing over a hundred workers, with facilities for cutting, fitting and dyeing fabrics. It was a bold declaration of confidence, both on Goldwyn’s part, and on Chanel’s. “This is the first time a couturière of such importance, or indeed any, has left the native heath,” observed Janet Flanner in a wry report for The New Yorker. “Considering what universal style-setting means to Paris for the maintenance of its financial and artistic pulse, the departure of Chanel for California must be more important than that of Van Dyck for the English Court of Charles I.” As it happened, there had already been an ill-starred precedent in 1925, when Goldwyn’s rival, Louis B. Mayer, hired Erté (the Russian-born designer and illustrator who worked in Paris for Paul Poiret). Erté hated his time in Hollywood, and declared upon his return to Paris that “film stars for the most part are illiterate, crotchety, unshapely,” and that American producers lacked “the slightest conception of elegance, beauty, or taste.” Goldwyn had come up with an offer for Chanel that looked too good to refuse. The million-dollar deal was done at a time

There Chanel met more Hollywood royalty: Marlene Dietrich, Claudette Colbert and the directors George Cukor and Erich von Stroheim, who allegedly kissed her hand and asked, “You are a seamstress, I believe?” Chanel, somewhat uncharacteristically, did not take offense, although she later remarked, “What a ham, but he really had style.” Soon afterwards, the seamstress set to work on her first Goldwyn film, a musical called Palmy Days starring Eddie Cantor as an assistant to a fraudulent psychic, with dance routines by Busby Berkeley. The film was notable more for its flimsily clad girls than its implausible plot, and Chanel had insufficient time to supervise all the costume design. However, her instinct for fluidity and movement manifested itself in her decision to make four versions of a dress for the ingénue Barbara Weeks; each looked identical but was cut with minute yet precise variations, to be seen at its most flattering in different scenes, whether the actress was standing, sitting or dancing. Chanel’s next job was on The Greeks Had a Word For Them, released in February, 1932. The title (and some of the storyline) had been changed from the original stage comedy, The Greeks Had a Word For It, in order to satisfy the censors; although, as Time magazine noted in its review, “Goldwyn was guided less by a sense of decency than a sense of decoration,” expressly crediting Chanel’s involvement. She dressed the three leads—Ina Claire, Joan Blondell and Madge Evans—who were playing glamorous showgirls-turned-gold-diggers. Thirty complete outfits were designed for the actresses. Chanel’s third and final Goldwyn project was to dress Gloria Swanson as a prima donna opera singer in Tonight or Never; and this time, the entire process was undertaken in Paris. The film star, who was herself something of a diva, described her encounter

when the deepening Depression had hit Paris couture. Previously wealthy American clients whose fortunes had been wiped out were making hurried departures, and even Chanel was forced to cut her prices in half as a consequence. nd so it was that on 25th February, 1931, the woman now deemed a fashion dictator set off for the New World aboard the steamship Europa, arriving in New York on 4th March, accompanied by her close friend Misia Sert. Chanel was immediately overwhelmed by Goldwyn’s publicity machine. A reporter from The New York Times was one of many who mobbed her hotel suite, where Chanel appeared to be “rather bewildered at the scores of interviewers and reception committee members.” Despite the crowd and the flu, Chanel held her own, wearing “a simple red jersey gown with a short skirt of the severe kind which she first made popular in wartime France,” and issuing some suitably strict diktats: a chic woman should dress well but not eccentrically; long hair would soon be back in fashion; and men who used scent were disgusting. Ten days later, Chanel departed by train from New York to Los Angeles. Goldwyn had arranged everything for maximum effect. The train was entirely white, and stocked with large quantities of French champagne, Russian caviar and American journalists, who reported on Chanel’s triumphant arrival in Hollywood. with Chanel in her memoir, Swanson on Swanson. After a week of fittings in Paris, there had been a pause in the proceedings, when it dawned upon Swanson that she was unexpectedly pregnant. “The following day Coco Chanel, tiny and fierce, approaching fifty, wearing a hat, as she always did at work, glared furiously at me when I had trouble squeezing into one of the gowns she had measured for me six weeks earlier. It was black satin to the floor, cut on the bias, a great work of art in the eyes of both of us. I said I would try it with a girdle, but when I stepped before her again, she snorted with contempt and said anyone a block away could see the line where the girdle ended halfway down my thigh. “‘Take off the girdle and lose five pounds,’ she snapped briskly. ‘You have no right to fluctuate in the middle of fittings. Come back tomorrow and we’ll finish the evening coat with the sable collar. Five pounds!’ she cried again, unable to restrain herself. ‘No less!’” The following day, Swanson returned to Rue Cambon with a large roll of surgical elastic, and requested that it be made into “a rubberized undergarment to the knees, or rather, two or three dozen of them.” Chanel was horrified, but Swanson prevailed, citing “reasons of health”; and eventually, couture corsets were provided, constructed with as much attention to detail as every other garment in the atelier. Tonight or Never proved to be Chanel’s last job for Goldwyn. The film—United Artists’ big Christmas release—opened to polite reviews (The New York Times described it as an “unusually striking production,” partly thanks to Chanel’s sartorial creations), but it flopped at the box office. She departed, according to The New Yorker, “in a huff,” having been told by the movie moguls that ‘her dresses weren’t sensational enough. She made a lady look like a lady. Hollywood wants a lady to look like two
ladies.’ Still, she had made her million dollars—Goldwyn paid up without an argument—and Vanity Fair, at least, was sufficiently impressed to nominate Chanel to its 1931 Hall of Fame. If Hollywood did not take to Chanel, then neither was she impressed by the might of the movies. In Paris, she had already collaborated as a costume designer with the most celebrated of modern artists: with Picasso and Cocteau on Antigone and Le Train Bleu; with Cocteau again in 1926 for his play Orphée (in which he described the character of Death appearing as “a very beautiful young woman in a bright pink ball-gown and fur coat”); and the Ballets Russes production of Apollon Musagète in 1929, composed by Stravinsky and choreographed by George Balanchine. Such triumphs counted for nothing in Hollywood, although Chanel was swift in returning the snub. In later years, when questioned about her trip into the heart of the film business, she was dismissive: “It was the Mont Saint-Michel of tit and tail.” And to Claude Delay, she emphasized her independence from the monolithic power of the studios: “The Americans wanted to tie me down, you see, because I out-fashion fashion. But I’m not for sale or hire. In Hollywood the stars are just the producers’ servants.” But whatever the disappointments of Chanel’s encounter with Hollywood, her journey to America was nonetheless a significant one. For this was the place that she had conjured up for herself in childhood as her father’s promised land, the New World where he would make his fortune, having left his daughters behind with the nuns. Her friend Claude Delay remembers Chanel’s wistful story of finding herself lost in Beverly Hills with Misia one day, searching for an address that they could not find. Eventually, Misia noticed the name Chanel written on one of the gateposts. CONTINUED ON PAGE 154

work to watch. In 2010’s underrated and little-seen All Good Things (her first film after a two-year-break), inspired by the life of real-estate heir and killer Robert Durst, she shared the marquee with Ryan Gosling. This fall brings Walter Salles’ adaptation of On the Road, in which she has a small part as Neal Cassady’s wife, Carolyn. The new year also brings the romantic fantasy Upside Down opposite Jim Sturgess, as well as Bachelorette, a comedy with Isla Fisher. “We say the ‘F’ word a lot in that one,” Dunst notes, “and I get to play the bitch, which is fun for me.” It’s Melancholia, though, which also stars Charlotte Rampling, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kiefer Sutherland and Alexander Skarsgård, that represents Dunst’s finest and most mature work to date. In one scene, Dunst basks, undressed, in the glow of the planet that corresponds with her unsettling mood swings. “I was self-conscious about [the nudity in the film],” she says. “It’s hard to do. They’re putting body makeup on you and you’re like, ‘How do my boobs look?’” As of our conversation, her brother, who lives in New York, and mother, who lives in the San Fernando Valley (Dunst grew up there after moving from New Jersey when she was six), still hadn’t seen it. “I think it’s going to be intense for them, yeah.” Dunst says she didn’t even consider a body double. “It’s naked, but it’s a Lars von Trier movie. And it looks beautiful. It’s not without reason. She’s having a moment with the planets, she’s accepting this fate and feeling this intimate thing,” Dunst explains. When it comes to her long-term goals, Dunst knows risk-taking will feed them. “I think of Charlotte Rampling,” she says of her co-star who famously appeared in 1974’s controversial The Night Porter. “If it weren’t for women like her, I wouldn’t feel open-minded to do things like this–to be brave enough to put it all out there.” “I don’t want to be another blond actress that’s on the page of Hollywood boring,” Dunst continues. “I don’t want to be part of a safe group. All the women that
I look up to were never part of that, and they’ve had the longest careers.” •

COCO’S LA LA LAND Napa Valley arrive bearing vintages from their estates and gossip from the city. When Yeager steps out of his studio, he’s sleuthing through Petaluma antiques galleries for gilded French pieces and rattling around San Francisco flea markets in search of Meissen porcelain. He recently found a set of 12 delicately carved ballroom chairs from Antique & Art Exchange in San Francisco that now adorn his Gustavian folly. New objets cluttering an old farm table include delicate Venetian glasses, an 18th-century French nobleman’s crimson silk jacket with its original carved mother-of-pearl buttons and a cache of French-cut crystal carafes from a Bordeaux château. Yeager’s studio manager, Brian Fuller, ships canvases to avid collectors and galleries in Carmel Valley, Beverly Hills, Santa Fe, Aspen, Houston, New York, London and Mumbai. “I’ve been fortunate to have a long career,” says the artist, taking a break to pick ripe heirloom tomatoes in his garden. “I studied in the early ’60s at the San Francisco Art Institute with teachers like Richard Diebenkorn and Elmer Bischoff, and I’ve been painting ever since. When people ask me if I’m still creating, I respond, ‘What else is better to do?’ I research and work on my art every day.” With Berkeley-based publisher Peter Koch, Yeager just released Paul Bowles 2137 Tanger Socco, a limited-edition, lavish red boxed compilation of the artist’s letters to the writer over four decades—illustrated with original portraits. “I met Paul Bowles in the late ’60s in Tangier,” says Yeager. “He was so encouraging for my work. And we always kept in touch.” The peripatetic Yeager has painted in Morocco, Corfu, the South of France

Still believing in Coco’s story of her childhood, Misia cried out in astonishment, “It’s your father. We’ll find him and take him back with us. I’ll leave Sert.” Chanel’s only response was a tart comment that Sert had already left Misia. The rest was left unsaid, although Chanel’s ambivalence about America was to crop up again in her conversations with Delay. On the one hand, it was a continent that had made her rich, through the vast sales of her perfumes, for which Americans seemed to have an insatiable appetite. (“They’ll buy every luxury,” she said to Delay, “and the first of all luxuries is perfume.”) And yet part of her, austere as a nun, resisted the seductions offered to her by America. Describing her hotel suite in Hollywood to Delay, Chanel listed its comforts with a certain amount of contempt: two bedrooms and four television sets, including one that could be watched in the bathroom. “All that’s for people who have gone soft. The English hide everything, the Americans show everything! America is dying of comfort.” •

MARILYN MONROE, HOTEL BEL-AIR, 1962 Upon check-in at the Hotel Bel-Air in June of 1962, photographer Bert Stern asked that all furniture be removed from his room. He hung a seamless white backdrop, ordered a case of 1953 Dom Pérignon and waited. His subject turned up five hours late but assured him, “We’ve got all the time that we want.” Over the next two weekends, Stern shot more than 2,500 images of Marilyn Monroe—mostly nudes with a colorful scarf or necklace. Five weeks later, the actress died alone in her home a few miles from the iconic resort. The images intended as her Vogue debut became an in memoriam tribute.
