1. the act or the state of expecting: to wait in expectation. 2. the act or state of looking forward or anticipating. 3. an expectant mental attitude: a high pitch of expectation. 4. something expected; a thing looked forward to. 5. a prospect of future good or profit: to have great expectations.

xpectation—a word that rings most true when it comes to a wedding. Our anticipation of that day begins from an early age. When we are little girls, we pretend to get married with our princess dresses on, flowers

picked from the garden as bouquets and dolls as bridesmaids. Never mind that the “groom” is Billy, the boy down the street…who is an inch shorter than you…it all adds up to perfection in your eight-year-old mind. And we hold onto that idea for decades to come. When the real thing happens, you have to let go of those notions a bit. Yes, all will be truly magical, but, perhaps, things might go off track. In fact, if your intentions are managed from the start, no one is disappointed in the end. Sometimes, the best occasions in a wedding are the ones you don’t expect. After a morning of rain (where you think you might have a heart attack because you didn’t have a Plan B), the sun comes out with an added bonus of a rainbow peeking over the clouds. Or, the band’s playlist that you edited so carefully goes awry and “YMCA” plays at the wrong time…sending your 85-year-old grandma to the dance floor to bust a move (PRICELESS, especially as it is all caught by your videographer). Or, I just heard a story from a bride who said her beautiful long veil wasn’t properly secured and kept falling in her face during the ceremony. She decided to rip it off and chuck it across the pews (to much applause and laughter from her guests), and now she says it’s what made her wedding unique! Always shoot for the best, but when things come up...roll with them. For the parts you can prepare, use this issue to inspire you to make your nuptials even that much more individual. Our editors have scoured the state to find the most original, most personal, latest and greatest vendors who are the best of the best. This issue of C Weddings is an ideal jumping-off point for scripting your big day! We also highlight some very special weddings in some of California’s exclusive venues. We take you inside their stories and their “happily ever afters”…because it isn’t the expectation that you will remember but the cherished moments—perfect and perfectly imperfect—that will be

All the Right Moves Led by veteran instructor Mimi Karsh, 3rd Street Dance offers monthly wedding prep classes to keep any couple on its toes. STYLE If you want choreography, plan for at least a month of rehearsal time. PRACTICE Remember to look at each other and smile. Don’t look at the floor and don’t count. Ladies, practice in your shoes and make sure your train is bustled well. TECHNIQUE If you are both fighting for control of the dance, it’s obvious. e chose an industrial space with a rustic vibe and made it into our perfect location with a little set design,” says fashion photographer Hilary Walsh of her recent nuptials to film director and record producer Emmett Malloy. “The flowers and place settings were what you would expect from a party in a barn in upstate N.Y.—my original idea.” The couple enlisted a team of the city’s top professionals to bedeck the downtown L.A. warehouse: the peony cake was by Sweet Lady Jane; Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo from Animal and Son of a Gun catered the affair; arrangements were by Holly Flora; and wines were from Napa’s Esser Vineyards. And, in true L.A. style, Malloy wore a Band of Outsiders suit while Walsh chose a gown by local designer Juan Carlos Obando.

lmost 20 years after Michelle Carlson and Molly Sims met as newly inducted Tri Delts at Vanderbilt University, Carlson received a note last spring from her friend with a simple request: Will you be my Maid of Honor? Planning for Sims’ Napa Valley nuptials to producer Scott Stuber, though, was no easy task—even with the help of events expert Yifat Oren. Carlson immediately started an email chain among the bridesmaids to arrange the shower. Deciding on The Peninsula Beverly Hills’ Verandah Room for an outdoor tea, she delegated tasks that played on the strengths of her co-attendants. While Carlson handled the invitations, Emese Szenasy made arrangements for Diane von Furstenberg to sponsor the shower. Sims’ favorite sparkling wine, Schramsberg Brut Rosé, was poured, and goodie bags were filled with Dior lipsticks, shower caps, certificates for blowouts at DryBar and MattieLuxe place mats. Instead of individual gifts for Sims, the bridesmaids all went in on a set of Astier de Villatte bowls from ABC Home. A bachelorette party in the Hamptons was followed by private sessions with fitness guru Tracey Anderson, and dinners at Nobu Next Door and The Surf Lodge in Montauk. Just six months after Stuber’s proposal, the bridal party descended on Solage Calistoga for the wedding weekend, taking over the spa before the rehearsal dinner. By the big day, Carlson was ready. “It took about four weeks to write the speech. I had memorized it, but I also had it on paper to be safe.” She suggests tributes stay between three to four minutes in length. “At the reception, I made sure the dress was bustled and that she was drinking enough water,” says Carlson, who was also witness on the couple’s marriage license. “Be organized, communicate with your bridesmaids and remember that while she means the world to you, she also means the world to all the other girls.” •

hen young chefs most recently embraced farm-to-table practice, demand for restaurantquality, well-sourced and à la minute reception cooking became sizzling hot. Early darlings of this sea change, Tara Maxey and Matt Poley formed Heirloom LA in 2009, supplying to The Oaks, Silverlake Wines and a slew of hip weddings. Today, the couple runs a half-block-long facility and 20-member team in Eagle Rock owed in part to the lasagna “cupcake”—a signature so popular that the savory hand-helds are now available at Williams-Sonoma. Given Maxey’s experience in desserts at Cake Monkey Bakery and Poley earning his chops under Gino Angelini, Heirloom LA operates like a roving restaurant (really, their food truck was sponsored by Microsoft Windows Phone). They got 2011’s 8,000-pound McGrath Family Farm seasonal strawberry allocation, which goes into everything from pies to preserves. They also have standing weekly orders—think whole pigs, lamb—that Poley fabricates upon arrival from local ranches. From these bases, each waste-not wedding menu finds its personality, whether arancini lamb bolognese at Agoura Hills’ Rancho del Diablo Dormido, or a Superior Farms “tomahawk” cut lamb rack at a Rancho Palos Verdes farmhouse. (Everything looks good, too, thanks to a new chalkboard artist, and ingredients such as homemade ricotta and charcuterie arriving in butcher’s paper tied with string.) “Rustic kind of fits us,” says Maxey. “Plated—we do that—but family style is what we love,” Poley adds. To accommodate their aesthetic, they filled a storage room with giant wooden platters, bowls and silver treasures from vintage markets, and branched out into event rentals. An adjacent tasting salon now offers prospective clients a simple setting for a multi-course meal. Will it also become a dinner party pop-up? You never know. As for the cupcakes, they promise: “We’ll always be serving them.” 323-872-2904; heirloomla.com. •

hen New York PR consultant and San Francisco native Alexandra Fritz said “yes!” to Columbian textile businessman Ernesto Khoudari in August, 2010, there were many big questions on her mind. One thing was nonnegotiable: Family friend Monique Lhuillier would design her dress. “I considered no one else,” says Fritz. “I love her fresh, lady-like aesthetic.” Inspired by Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy’s sexy simplicity, Fritz met with Lhuillier at the designer’s West Hollywood flagship in October and walked right up to an elegant sheath. To Fritz, the gown embodied her idea of Hollywood Regency panache. She recalls: “Monique wanted me to try on a few puffy ones, experiment with shapes, but afterward, she said, ‘You’re right.’” Together, they discussed how to modify her first choice into a custom silk concoction that was more her style—lowering the back and increasing the décolletage. Lhuillier also suggested adding a long-sleeved coat of delicate Chantilly lace with metallic thread detail based on a similar piece from the fall 2011 collection. “It completed Alexandra’s overall look, but was still in keeping with her cool, effortless vibe,” says the designer. They paired the dress with a chapellength veil made from two layers of circular-cut tulle. “Since the gown silhouette was slim, the veil encompassed her and added an element of drama,” says Lhuillier. After four months of production, three sketches, a muslin version, and an afternoon of pinning, the final dress, cosseted in a waistcoat of lace, was faultless; gauzy glamour for a modern wedding with oodles of orchids, lilies and garden roses. “The dress was perfect,” says Fritz. “I could not have felt better on my wedding day.” 8485 Melrose Pl., West Hollywood, 323-655-1088. •

The Skinny Vaser shape may just be the magic wand for brides-to-be wanting to shave off that little extra something by chriStine Lennon

I

f I had a dollar for every time someone wished they could melt away extra fat, trim down the pooch of the belly, the bulge of the hips, or even the little flesh that spills over the top of a strapless gown, without any effort, then I’d be as rich as the people behind Sound Surgical Technologies are about to be. The company’s Vaser Shape device, now in residence at Kate Somerville Skin Clinic in West Hollywood, is a diathermic ultrasound apparatus that does just that. It emits high frequency sound waves warming the body’s connective tissue so that fat cells release their contents, which are then absorbed into the body and eliminated through the lymph system. Aside from some fairly intense heat, and the occasional electric tingle that lets you know something admittedly weird and extraordinary is happening, it’s trauma-free. An area about the size of a sheet of paper can be covered during one session, though up to five are recommended for best results. There’s no recovery period. And it works. Really. During four consecutive Tuesday morning appointments at Somerville’s spa, Jill, my nurse practitioner, who’d be hard-pressed to find any bags of her own to treat, oiled my abdomen, fired up the instrument, and spent 40 minutes passing a paddle with ultrasound conductors over my pregnancy-stretched “pooch.” If it sounds horrifying, it’s not. Considering that some of the most famous bodies in town have been greased up and treated under that same chandelier in the little white room, I was in good company. The Sound Surgical people say the sensation is like a hot stone massage, but I liken it to someone playing air hockey on my abs; instead of a puck, she’s using an iron on its “silk” setting. Throughout the procedure, Jill checked the temperature of my skin (as it turns out, 43-45 degrees Celsius is the optimum range for fat blasting) to make sure I didn’t burn. And after the final

session, we compared measurements and photos: I’d lost more than an inch in my waist, and the skin appeared firmer and tighter than it had in years. Later, on the phone with Sound Surgical’s research and development VP, Dr. Mark Schafer, I had two questions: “How does it work?” and, “What took you so long?” “It warms the tissue at the surface but also deep down, where it stimulates all of your biological processes,” says Schafer. “For every degree our temLog on to perature increases, the cells are 13% more active. vaser.com/ patients/find- Then, the acoustic energy going in the tissue a-physician. causes the fat cells to leak. They’re like little bags php to find of triglycerides, like bags of butter, designed to a physician or laser store fat as an energy source. They can very easily center with free that up—the cells are designed to be flexible Vaser Shape. in their ability to expand and contract. The uniform heating combined with the ultrasound makes the fat break down, which then migrates to the lymphatic system and is excreted from there. You just flush it away.” A similar tool is available in Europe, and Vaser Shape is essentially a modified version of an Italian machine that has been on the market for years. “But this is the only one we’ve seen that’s virtually painless,

really,” says Schafer. “There’s zero downtime.” No one can quantify the kind of transformations people can expect from the treatment. And though the equipment has been cleared by the FDA, it’s only labeled use is to improve the appearance of cellulite—not to offer permanent fat reduction. Skeptics say it’s expensive (around $700 per visit) for something that delivers such subtle, and possibly impermanent, outcomes. But patients are reporting real and lasting effects. And it might be just the pre-Bora Bora boost that you need to feel your best on, say, a honeymoon. “We are so excited about this device,” says Somerville. “Once the word really gets out, that machine’s going into overdrive.” •

DAVID SLIJPER/tRunk ARchIVES

since the equipment was delivered to somerville’s headquarters in november, its switch has been in the “on” position more than it has been off.

LOS ANGELES

For more than 25 years, Marc Friedland has created some very important paper goods (think: “and the Oscar goes to...”). Here, the invitation expert, who has a new online collection with Postmark.com, gives his top tips: • Honor your loved ones by personalizing each RSVP card rather than just using an M with a line. • Include a quotation meaningful to the couple, whether it’s a lyric or a line from a poem. • If there are several events (rehearsal dinner, etc.) send all the information in one mailing. • If you want people to wear black tie, take a stand and say so. Don’t make it “optional.” • When choosing, regard your invitation as a keepsake that you and your guests will hold onto. marcfriedlandcollection.com.

MIDDLE Luc Tuymans, St. Valentine; Earl Grey shortbread, Crème de Violette gelée, crème fraîche parfait. BOTTOM Wayne Thiebaud, Chocolate Cake; chocolate cake, coffee ganache, vanilla buttercream.

s an art student at UC Santa Cruz, Caitlin Williams Freeman often visited the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Captivated by California painter Wayne Thiebaud’s ’60s-era Display Cakes, she supported herself throughout college as a pastry shop counter girl before her eureka moment at the artist’s 2000 Legion of Honor retrospective. “Standing there in front of them, I knew I had to learn to make them—those cakes.” Eventually, she met Meg Ray and they formed Bay Area pâtisserie Miette. Williams Freeman sold her part in the successful business after six years, and when her husband, Blue Bottle Coffee Co. founder James Freeman, was opening a SFMOMA cafe some years later, it all came full circle. “I told him, ‘This is where I realized why I’m a baker. Can I make the Thiebauds in the cafe?’” Williams Freeman’s conceptualizations now range from sculptural Ellsworth Kelly Fudgsicles to hand-printed packages of Mexican Wedding cookies based on the marriage portrait of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. New menu items also honor visiting exhibitions. Some, she admits, are more difficult to cultivate than others. For the brooding, gray and yet somehow ethereal Luc Tuymans show in 2010, her edible pairing for St. Valentine came in the wee hours. “Crème de Violette!” (She stacked an infused gelée with a crème fraîche parfait and a “not too sweet” Earl Grey shortbread heart.) Other designs, like the cross-section, Battenberg-style Mondrian dessert, may never leave the cafe’s permanent collection. And since the museum’s rooftop sculpture garden is occasionally available for special events, these confections offer cultured couples an extraordinary, delectable display. 151 Third St., S.F., 415-243-0455; sfmoma.org; bluebottlecoffee.net. •

Their favorite part: “It felt like we were on vacation with all of our best friends.” esperanzaresort.com. “Our goal was to share one of our deepest passions—travel—with our friends and family, and everyone was blown away by Rancho Pescadero,” says Ty Bentsen, an L.A. e had always spoken about getting married barefoot on a beach,” says Kasia Bilinski. And after becoming engaged at the Muir Beach lookout while on a Highway One road trip in 2010, Big Sur seemed like the perfect place for Bilinski, a fashion designer, and her groom, Matthew Murphy, a filmmaker, to wed. The couple, who met as students in the bride’s native Australia, rented a property where all 11 of the wedding party stayed for a long weekend and partook in the festivities. “Our day began with a big family breakfast,” Bilinski says. She and her maid of honor then gathered wildflowers and grasses from the land surrounding the house to mix in with botanicals from Fiori di Amore for the floral arrangements and her bouquet. Close friends and relatives waited at a special spot on Pfeiffer Beach—where a stream of fresh water meets the ocean—for Bilinski and her father, who gave her away. “I told Matt he was not allowed to look at me when I walked around the river. Later, he knew it was because I was wearing white—not black as I had told him I would all along. The look on his face!” (Bilinski made the dress herself with slits so the wind would carry it.) After the ceremony, guests enjoyed a dinner by Michael’s Catering of grilled halibut, pepper-crusted filet of beef and stuffed portobellos in a nearby meadow. “I wanted it to feel like we were feasting in the wilderness,” Bilinski says. “The setting, intimacy and decorations were the most unique. We put our spirit and aesthetic into every single aspect. It was so elegant, pure and simple, and perfectly embodied Matt and me.” •

told her there is no way that we could get married in a Chinese restaurant,” photographer Justin Coit remembers saying to his then-fiancée, Katherine Power, the co-founder of fashion website Who What Wear. But, Mr. Chow it was for the classically cool Beverly Hills couple who had their first group date at the Troubadour, Power’s bridal shower at the Chateau Marmont, the rehearsal dinner at Mastro’s, and a wedding eve sleepover at the Beverly Hills Hotel. The morning ceremony took place at the Hollywood home of friends Jamie and Kelly Patricof. Power donned a white mini dress (made for her by friend and stylist/designer Rachel Zoe) to exchange Jonas Grunberg rings. After a brunch of bagels and lox, and mimosas, the newlyweds headed back to the hotel for a couples’ massage before the party. “We went with Mr. Chow’s whole Art Deco theme. We just had bigger and more of what they normally do,” Power explains of the abounding orchids and stargazer lilies. The couple also recruited pals Brent Bolthouse to redesign the lounge and Samantha Ronson to DJ. Prince’s “Purple Rain”—a favorite of Power’s—ended the evening, but they’ll be back on their anniversary every June 25th to relive the perfect night. •

didn’t want to look back at photos and be able to identify its exact year. I wanted something timeless,” says Mill Valley’s Jordan Moss of his September nuptials to Pleasanton native Jennifer Harland. The 120guest Durham Ranch affair, awash in pale peaches, taupes and feather grays, captured wine-country casual with elements coordinated by expert planner Laurie Arons—including the band Notorious and the please-all friedchicken menu by chef Tyler Florence (brother-in-law of the groom). “We flirted with typical fish and vegetables, but this was one thing almost everybody would be into,” explains Moss of the family-style dinner. And since “almost everybody” also likes sweets, the Paula LeDuc dessert buffet offered a two-tier Perfect Endings cake plus extra slices in red velvet and carrot.

“Nobody left hungry—that’s for sure,” laughs Harland. Timeless as the Napa Valley weekend was, their introduction was thoroughly modern—and, they both say, totally out of character. After exchanging wide smiles while Moss (who works in commercial real estate) was in a meeting and Harland (owner of PosePrints.com) was with her sister at La Boulange Cafe & Bakery on Polk Street, Moss posted on Craigslist.org’s “Missed Connections.” Harland’s friends, hearing about the encounter, urged her to check the site. She found his missive hours before it expired, and they’ve been together ever since. The couple agrees that this sense of togetherness extended from the welcome dinner at Rotisserie & Wine to the day-after party at Pizzeria Tra Vigne. Family and friends lingered by the Hotel Yountville pool for some quality time before the couple decamped to Big Sur. For their honeymoon, Mr. and Mrs. Moss will again hope for no missed connections en route to Buenos Aires. •

olpo di fulmine. That’s what Italians call “love at first sight.” And it certainly was a lightning bolt for Megan Bopes and Carlo Mondavi. Six months after meeting at a barbecue in Santa Monica, the former pro-snowboarder popped the question to the Park City gal at Opus One winery. (Mondavi’s grandfather Robert and the Rothschild clan collaborated to create the brand in 1979.) At the time, the pair was living part-time in Napa Valley, where Mondavi is currently the west coast sales manager for the family-run Continuum Estate; and in L.A., where Bopes is a documentary producer. One afternoon, Mondavi turned to his fiancée and asked, “What if we got married in a castle in Italy?” “I told him, ‘Settle down there, dreamer,’” says Bopes. But Mondavi dialed the Frescobaldis—winemakers from the Chianti Rufina region with deep ties to the company Mondavi’s grandfather founded in 1965. The couple would become one of the first non-Frescobaldis to wed at the estate. With help on the ground from Northern California wedding coordinator Mary Ellen Murphy, Bopes went for easy-going decor and a simple Augusta Jones lace gown. Uncle Buddy married them under an oak tree, and the party feasted in an ancient outdoor courtyard with glasses of Frescobaldi Pomino Benefizio, Continuum, and plates piled high with Chianina steak and spinach gnocchi. Afterward, the party danced until 5 a.m. And when shuttle bus drivers forgot to take stragglers home, the newlyweds and their friends lay in the grass. “I remember thinking—what an amazing night,” says Bopes. “To be here with my best friends and my husband, watching a million shooting stars. How lucky am I?” •

low-key brunch turned into an all-day date, then a 12-year romance. When they decided to make it official, L.A.-based Sydney Poitier and Dorian Heartsong turned to Church Estate Vineyards in Malibu. Friends sang the famous Beatles tune, “All You Need Is Love,” a cappella, as the couple floated down the aisle during the recessional. “I wanted a wedding that was a reflection of us,” says the actor, who did not use a planner. “Relaxed, organic, comfy and easy.” Using invitations embedded with wildflower seeds, succulents instead of traditional florals, and Édith Piaf in the lineup, Poitier and bass guitarist Heartsong looked for ways to go green, play meaningful music, and involve their tight-knit circle of friends. One kindred spirit crafted centerpieces out of reclaimed wood; another sewed linens; and longtime family pal Wolfgang Puck provided an array of delicious delicacies. Through it all, Poitier (named after her father, Sidney, the actor) and her groom kept the classics coming, grooving to “I Will” (also by The Beatles) for the combined father-daughter, mother-son dance. And at the end of the night, guests parted carrying home plants that require no soil to thrive. “I liked the symbolism,” says Poitier. “Like love, they create life out of thin air.” • The 140 guests danced by a small lake. atali Amar and Michael Smith met in Israel (where Amar was born and raised) at a party for a friend’s wedding. Upon his return to Los Angeles, Smith (a media executive) courted the brown-eyed beauty over Skype for two months before she agreed to a visit. (“To show her I was normal, I had my mom and niece join one of our chats,” he laughs.) A year later, on a trip up the California coastline, Smith proposed at Big Sur’s Post Ranch Inn with a sentimental stone. “The brilliant-cut white diamond was the last piece of jewelry my dad gave to my mom before he passed. I had it reset with a setting Nati loved.” At once, the betrothed, along with coordinator Merryl Brown, immersed themselves in planning every detail of the lavish affair, which would take place at Smith’s family’s Montecito manse. That detail had been firmly sealed: “Nati first met my mom when we went to her house. She told Nati that one day she hoped I would get married there and then gave her a little wink, wink.” And it was under a chuppah, adorned with thousands of pink and white roses, by Mindy Rice, that the couple were joined together as man and wife. The groom’s lifelong Rabbi, Uri D. Herscher read letters the two had scribed to one another. Amar’s fondest memory from the day was her walk down the aisle. “I came out to see the entire crowd of our favorite friends and family. My father gave me a beautiful blessing and then I saw my amazing husband,” says the bride, who was flawless in a white confection and veil by renowned designer Monique Lhuillier. The drop-waist gown had a lace-corset bodice and full skirt made with dramatic layers of organza and ostrich feathers. Amar completed her look with Harry Winston Lily Cluster diamond earrings. Following the ceremony, the sound of saxophonist Justin Claveria greeted guests as they passed through sky-high iron gates (from local Eye of the Day Garden Design Center) into the courtyard. All were seated under grand oak trees dripping with lights by King Dahl Event Design and brilliant chandeliers provided by Bella Vista Designs. It was longtime family friend Kenny Loggins who kicked off the reception with a lively performance of “Footloose,” followed by Brian Judah, star of the Bravo show “Platinum Hit,” who performed

when lauren Bacall (née Betty perske) met Humphrey Bogart on the set of To Have or Have Not, he was involved in a turbulent, alcohol-afflicted marriage to his third wife, mayo methot. until then, the actor, who’d already appeared in some 50 films, had never had an affair with a leading lady. He aptly called 19-year-old Bacall, Baby. their trysts took place at her apartment in Beverly Hills and aboard Bogart’s 54-foot sailing yacht, the santana, (despite her chronic seasickness) which he docked on Balboa island. Just 11 days after divorcing methot, Bogie was wed to Baby, and remained so until his death in 1957. PhotograPh by Ed Clark tExt by kElsEy mckinnon
