In 1821, at a horse race in Paris, Nicolas Rieussec successfully tested his revolutionary invention that allowed time to be recorded to an accuracy of a fifth of a second. The chronograph was born. Today, the Montblanc TimeWalker Chronograph Automatic is a tribute to 190 years of the chronograph’s technical evolution. 43 mm stainless steel case, skelleted horns and sapphire crystal back, black dial with red gold-plated hands and indexes. Crafted in the Montblanc Manufacture in Le Locle, Switzerland.

founder’s letter

pring is the perfect season for re-invention! After months of being wrapped in sweaters and coats, we shed our layers to unveil a brighter side of ourselves. This theme can be translated to all areas of our lives. From taking down the winter decor and adding pops of green around the house to getting back to the gym after too many holiday pastry puffs, it is about time we refocus on transformation.

With that mindset, we thought the perfect cover girl to represent re-invention would be Nicole

Richie. Once in the world of party-girl celebutantes, she has done a 180 in her lifestyle. A mother to two of the most adorable children, a devoted wife to a rocker, a businesswoman who has launched successful clothing and accessories companies, an actress and a television personality headlining NBC’s new show “Fashion Star,” Nicole is hitting her stride. We go behind the scenes with her in the season’s pretty pastels to witness the metamorphosis. Sometimes change is immaterial. Supermodel Kirsty Hume looks the same as the day she shot her first editorial 18 years ago. With her trademark long locks and impeccable features, she is ethereal in this season’s trend of “re-invented” Art Deco fashions. That Kirsty is now in a re-invention of her own (after separating from her husband, Donovan Leitch) does nothing to dampen the beauty radiating from within. Impossibly, she keeps getting better. Speaking of which, not much could be better than Lanvin. Beloved by all…stylists, editors and celebrities alike…Lanvin is at the top of its game with Alber Elbaz as its fearless leader. When the French house opened up a duo of stores in the past year, in Los Angeles and Malibu, I knew he had California on his mind (and I couldn’t be happier!). And, when I heard Mr. Elbaz would be coming here for a very intimate presentation of the Spring 2012 collection and a dinner with friends, I knew it was THE place to be. C was thrilled to score a front-row seat for the show as well as the evening, and we are proud to be the exclusive magazine bringing it to you. The funky location wasn’t up to Alber’s pleasing and within 24 hours was transformed, or shall I say, re-invented, into something so purely Lanvin that it only makes the story that much more compelling. Read our in-depth Q+A for your access to the evening…and into the mind of one of fashion’s greatest designers. Another fabulous designer among us is a local girl gone global. From dressing the most gorgeous brides and actresses on the red carpet to designing crystal for Waterford (plus new lines and brand extensions aplenty), Monique Lhuillier is quickly becoming fashion royalty. When she retreats to her home at the end of the day, she has made sure it embodies everything for which she is known: simple elegance. Recently, her love for collecting modern art and her newly designed outside space has shaped a re-invention for the new year. C takes you inside the House of Lhuillier! With 2012 and a fresh fashion season fully upon us now, we look to inspire you to do whatever will make you happy and feel rejuvenated (be it a new look to try, a new place to visit, a new exercise trend). A perfected personal style and

an inner peace will come…and what could be chicer than that?

ashion and jewelry designer Veronica M. Toub, who relocated from Paris to Los Angeles last year, spends most of her time dashing about the far flung corners of the globe to bring back exotic items from the finest craftsmen in Bali, Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar and Kenyan Maasai. After 25 years of collecting, she’s finally turned her nomadic state of mind to California, opening VMT this month in Brentwood. “This was always my dream—to put it all together someday. Foreign Exchange an exotic young talent, Elisa Sednaoui takes her next big step toward hollywood BY KELSEY McKINNON

he speaks with one of those untraceable accents—a husky inflection of French, Arabic, English, Spanish and Italian. If Elisa Sednaoui looks familiar, you probably recognize her as one of fashion’s newest faces with campaigns last year for Armani, H&M and Chanel. Or, maybe from her debut at the Met Ball on the arm of “Uncle Karl” (Lagerfeld). Her godfather also just happens to be famed shoemaker Christian Louboutin. The 24-year-old model, actress and filmmaker spent her childhood in Egypt before her parents separated and she moved to Italy with her fashioneditor mother. After passing through Paris and London, she left for New York at 18, and Sednaoui is now bound for Los Angeles. “I’m looking for a nice house in town,” she says excitedly. “I want to wake up and have tea in my garden.” Before that can happen, however, she’ll finish editing the documentary Kullu Tamam (Arabic for “everything is good”), which she produced and co-directed last summer with her London-based friend Martina Gili. The film was shot in the ancient Nile Valley city of Luxor, where her father, an architect, still lives. “I felt like last year, the media mainly focused on the bloggers of Tahrir Square. We took to the countryside village next to a mud brick house my father built 30 years ago,” she says of her mission to expose how different rural generations are coping with the uprisings in the Middle East. Other recent projects include The Legend of Kaspar Hauser—an Italian feature shot in Sardinia with Vincent Gallo—and the French film Love Lasts Three Years. She also collaborated with Israeli DJ Chaim Avital and co-directed (with Gili) the music video for his club anthem “Robots on Meth.” A modern-day Renaissance woman, Sednaoui is just getting started: “I would love to someday write a screenplay and then direct the film,” she says. “We’ll see what happens.” •

Dr. David B. Agus’ The End of Illness (Free Press, $26), was praised by everyone from Lance Armstrong to Al Gore.

5

hen it comes to managing our own health, most of us take a one-size-fits-all approach to supplements, diets and diagnoses. What works for one, however, could be a misstep for another. Award-winning oncologist and medical technology innovator Dr. David B. Agus of USC offers up this vision in The End of Illness. This ground breaking new book advocates a personalized approach to wellness. It’s no accident that this kind of health care emerges from the Golden State: “The West is where they take risks,” Intel co-founder Andy Grove once told Dr. Agus. By 2000, the doctor had relocated to L.A. to co-found (with engineer/physicist Danny Hillis) two companies that test for each patient’s individual risk-factors based on DNA and environment, and then concoct a

Perfect Scents

preventative lifestyle plan in response. Despite putting forth some complex concepts, the book is user-friendly and begins with an in-depth questionnaire which asks, “How is your sense of smell?” and “Is your ring finger longer than your middle finger?” The relevance is addressed throughout, accompanied by statistic-backed tips that advise skipping multi-vitamins (shown to increase death rates!), moving/walking regularly (exercising and then sitting is tantamount to smoking cigarettes), and eating and sleeping at consistent hours (irregularity causes inflammation). Overall, Dr. Agus encourages readers to know their bodies and to research doctors with the thorough mentality of a car shopper. “Every day, I have to tell [cancer] patients, ‘I have nothing more for you,’” he says. “I don’t want to do this anymore.” NORA ZELEVANSKY

T

ucked away in a San Fernando Valley neighborhood of mid-century, ranch-style homes is a secluded, verdant paradise. Drive by the property, and you’d never guess that behind its walls lies the 1930s Spanish-style abode inhabited by Priscilla Woolworth, a stylesetter whose eponymous website champions green living and offers eco-friendly items such as chic market bags and a most attractive compost bin. “You forget you’re in L.A. when you’re here,” Woolworth says as she walks through a thicket of roses, lavender and sage in her Valley Glen backyard. “It’s divine when everything is in bloom, attracting the bees, butterflies and hummingbirds.” She moved here eight years ago after living in Beverly Hills for 12 (and before that, France, and New York). The rear of the home includes a pool and two guest houses, one of which her 22-year-old daughter, Arielle Elwes, lives in (her younger daughter, Lucie Elwes, 19, is at college). Woolworth launched her site in 2009 because friends were always asking how to get the charming items around her house. Plus, she notes, “I have the retail gene on both sides of my family.” Descendants on her father’s side started the F.W. Woolworth Company five-and-dimes in the late 1800s, and her grandparents in France were also storeowners. Now, Woolworth uses her domicile as a “lab” to test out wares. In the kitchen, for example, you’ll find a colorful knit egg cozy made in Nepal and a striped plastic kettle from Africa that holds graywater, which she repurposes for plants. Both can be purchased on her site. “I’m very choosy,” she says. “If I won’t have it in my house, I won’t sell it.” Also spotted: rustic wooden bowls sharing space with silver that’s been in the family for generations. “I grew up surrounded by precious things that I wasn’t allowed to touch,” says the environmental enthusiast. “I didn’t want that here.” So, silver aside, Woolworth decorates with simple, but meaningful objects: rocks collected on hikes in Maine, Santa Barbara and other pastoral locales; cuttings from her garden; antlers. It’s all interspersed with personal pieces, such as albums she has made to chronicle her daughters’ lives and photos from family friends like the late artist Andrew Wyeth and photographer Amanda de Cadenet. Deep, melon-hued custom-made sofas are arranged invitingly in both the living and sitting rooms. Woolworth made the area that was once a small bedroom and deck into her office. There, beneath inspiration boards on the walls sit shelves of items waiting to be shipped to customers. It’s also where she’s working on a title for young women called LOLA (Lots of Love Always), a lifestyle book full of how-tos and advice—“things I wish I’d known when I was 18”—on beauty, gardening, volunteering and even etiquette. “I’m a compulsive sharer,” Woolworth laughs. Whether it’s a tip about the latest outdoors-inspired artist, a recipe for a delicious lentil soup or who makes the best all-natural moisturizer, “I want to share good, useful information. I don’t know any other way.” priscillawoolworth.com. •

or this lawn-less French Modern installation in Hancock Park, Scott Shrader thought inside the box to give what the revered Licensed Landscape Contractor calls “an introduction to the house:” His design mimics the organization of owners Donna and Martin J. Wolff’s Contemporary art collection just inside with a systematic grid of walkways, three-foot square hedges and semi-deciduous foliage. Yet, using traditional materials (gravel, boxwood hedges and elegant evergreen pear trees) keeps the enclosure relevant to the locale. The only hardscape to this low-maintenance eye-catcher? A stone path from street to front door. He adds: “Ladies in stilettos can appreciate that.” shraderdesign.com.

welve years ago, Santa Barbara-based Charles Banks was brought in as managing partner of a transformed cattle ranch in Santa Ynez. That winery, Jonata, would earn 98-100-point ratings and the rare praise of critic Robert Parker: best Cab Franc in the New World. Impossibly, Banks topped this feat in 2006 when he acquired (with a partner) Screaming Eagle, the 100-point Oakville cult Cabernet with a wait-list rival only to Lakers floor-seats for relative lifetime span. One might raise an eyebrow to learn that the just-launched passion project of Charles and his wife, Ali, is boxed and table wine. For every sale, Cultivate returns 10% of all sales to charitable endeavors. On the interactive website, buyers click on a world map to vote for a cause. Each quarter, the most popular charity receives $50,000. Runners-up get $10,000 each. This sizeable donation strategy (“subject to increase!” says Ali Banks) includes a shift away from the big-ticket partnerships under global umbrella Terroir (the Bankses and winemaker Andy Erickson moved on from Jonata and Screaming Eagle in ’09 and ’11, respectively). “We started Cultivate with no investors, just stickies on the dining room wall. That’s totally different than the incredible capital cost to build the others,” says Ali of the overhead. Essentially, production follows the J. Peterman model: “Find the best juice at the best price around the world.” Though crafted by the same winemakers as its exclusive sisters, Cultivate wines aren’t $750, and they’re intended for a younger, style-conscious consumer. The team enlists artists to create each label. There’s the flair of Chez Panisse events menu designer Cynthia Warren (Copa Cabana 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon) and LMNOP Creative (Dream Walking 2009 Chardonnay) to the sharp eye of iconic S.F. photographer Fred Lyon (The Gambler 2010 Malbec, $15). The “Behind the Brand” blog also blends design with entertaining tips and chic party decor. For 2012, “The Give” is projected to reach $750,000. Adds Banks, “These really do become house wines for Tahoe, book club, dinner parties. It’s 16 cents an ounce, and it’s fabulous.” Best of all, no wait-lists. cultivatewines.com. •

s an avid traveler, I was excited when American Airlines launched non-stop flights from LAX to Pudong International Airport (PVG) last spring. In a short period, I could—and would—shop the modernized city. Following the 14-hour flight, my check-in at The PuLi Hotel and Spa (thepuli.com) was particularly welcoming. This Zen-influenced oasis touts the perfect jet-lag antidotes: a majestic indoor infinity pool for a quick dip, followed by room service from chef Dane Clouston. After an Ambien-induced night of sleep, I woke up ready for my first order of business at the Shanghai South Bund Soft-Spinning Material Market, a multi-floored building filled with vendors and tailors (of questionable taste and offerings). Thanks to an insider recommendation, I made a beeline to the third floor, space 395 with my go-to Alexander McQueen khakis to replicate in a rainbow of colors. I was thrilled with the two-day turn-around of not only my trousers, but also a silk Mao suit. Here, quality exceeds the very affordable price. Pack anything you want reproduced and make this your first stop to ensure enough time for its completion. Of course, there’s more to do here after a long day of shopping, and a customary foot massage and Shanghai pedicure (done with blades) at Kang Jun is a bargain. purchases. Chinese food in Shanghai can be disappointingly Westernized (e.g. foie gras on chow mein), but reliable meals can be found at perennial favorite Ye Shanghai (elite-concepts. com). Mr & Mrs Bund (mmbund.com) continues to be the hottest table in town, and you will salivate for the truffle toast. My obsession is Lucky Zen & Veg Restaurant, which will satisfy any healthy Californian’s appetite. An after-five must-do is sipping Shook! (shookrestaurantshanghai.com) restaurant’s Kir Royale with caviar-crème de cassis pearls against a spectacular view of The Bund, Shanghai’s historical waterfront area, and the city’s skyline. Cultural attractions are also touched by a pervasive sense of style, down to The Bund’s stunning Art Deco architecture—best admired with a satisfying stroll. At the eye-opening Museum of the First National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party, located in charming Xintiandi, check out the kitsch-filled gift shop. I spent hours at the Shanghai Museum. This crash-course in history includes galleries of ancient bronzes, decorative pieces from the Ming Dynasty, and a particularly inspiring costume display. Gazing at a salmon-skin suit, I realize it wouldn’t look out of place down a couturier’s runway. Even in just a few days, it’s clear: Shanghai lives up to its moniker as Paris of the East. •

J Jean Paul Gaultier

ean Paul Gaultier never needed much fodder to come up with a brilliant idea. When other designers may have, for example, traveled to Morocco to dream up a souk-themed collection, the Frenchman looked nearby to the multiethnic arrondissements of North Paris. When other designers sought out rare gems and precious materials for a jewelry line, Gaultier famously took apart a cat-food can, dipped it in silver and turned it into a cult-favorite bracelet—part of a collection of accessories made out of items such as tea balls and Brillo pads. “I’ve always thought that beauty can be found anywhere and that some humble objects we don’t even notice can be beautiful,” says Gaultier, 59. Now imagine an exhibition where videos are projected over blank mannequin faces, rendering them animated. Vocal, they yammer at each other: “Hmm. I would smoke a cigarette, anything for a cigarette. How boring. I know it is forbidden here, like everywhere. How boring.” Surrounded by photos by Mario Testino and Andy Warhol, video clips from Pedro Almodóvar and Luc Besson, the forms are clad in show-stopping dress that gender-bends and flaunts race, religion and culture. “His designs and the show are just a perfect match for San Francisco,” says Jill D’Alessandro, curator of Costume and Textile Arts at the Fine Arts Museums, which have also fêted creative minds such as Cristóbal Balenciaga. “The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk” comes to the city this March after originating in Montreal and traveling to Dallas. “Being openly gay, taking his influence from the streets, music, sexuality, pop culture…he’s Vivienne Westwood meets Yves Saint Laurent,” D’Alessandro says. Six saucy motifs carry the exhibition (curated by ThierryMaxime Loriot at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts). It’s comprised of 120 ensembles from 1976 to 2010: The Boudoir—think Madonna’s cone-shaped bras; Skin Deep—bondage, leather, body stockings; Odyssey—sailor-striped shirts and chic white hats; Punk Cancan—classic Parisian trench coats with rocker skirts; Urban Jungle—embroidery, lace and animal skins; and Metropolis—costumes for movies, theater, dance and music, and everyone from Régine Chopinot’s dancers to Kurt Cobain, Carla Bruni and Beyoncé. Looking back, Gaultier’s work reads like an anthology of eccentricities and “a-ha” moments. His love of feathers and fabulousness started early when he watched a television broadcast of the Folies Bergère at his grandmother’s home. She believed he had a spiritual connection to the daughter she lost in 1914 and subsequently gave him free rein to dye her hair and experiment with her appearance. As he moved up the design-world ladder from Pierre Cardin’s

Today, as one of only 12 members of the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture, Jean Paul Gaultier (established 1997), serves a small echelon of passionate fashionphiles. Los Angeles-based collector Susan Casden is one of Gaultier’s major clients. Every year Gaultier sends his top customers a funky holiday gift. Once, he gave Casden a hanger with her name and face painted in oils. “He wants you to hang your outfit and see yourself CONTINUED ON PAGE 190 wearing his dress,” she says.

The Marin-born author of Bird by Bird keeps it honest Your 1993 book, Operating Instructions, chronicled the first year of your life as a single mother. A new memoir, Some Assembly Required, co-written by your son, follows the first year of his life as a 19-year-old father. What was it like to work together? Sam loved that Operating Instructions existed. I said I’d do Some Assembly Required if he did it with me; and it involved the usual pulling teeth that you can expect working with 19- or 20-year-olds. Riverhead I became ‘nagging mom.’ Sometimes, he would call to talk about what he was going through Books, $27. and it would be so profound. Little by little, it imperfectly started taking form, filling up its own shoulders with itself. I could just tell it was beautiful. Your books, both non-fiction and fiction, often reflect a distinctive California spirit. How does the state inform your work? I think California is entirely a mother of mine in terms of my writing. I was born and bred in its beauty. Every single relative that I have is within 10 miles of me. Living here has shaped the values that I have about the earth, the rivers, the bay, the mountains. Which authors for you epitomize California? Wallace Stegner. Evan S. Connell. Gina Berriault—she was a great writer—I was very influenced by her sense of place. Gary Snyder was here. Also, Allen Ginsberg. Even though he was so New York, I associate him with the Beats. Richard Brautigan. Steinbeck. All his books. I just devoured them. • READINGS: March 28, Los Angeles; April 3, Mill Valley; April 5, Sebastopol; April 12, Berkeley.

atelier to a house of his own, Gaultier continued to cull his influences from territory as diverse as the London post-punk street scene; Algerian-French model Farida Khelfa, who epitomized “Parisienne” for him; even a paper bra he created for his teddy bear when he was a child—which later inspired the legendary corset for Madonna’s Blond Ambition World Tour. His latest runway paid homage to another pop diva—Amy Winehouse—with a hangover-chic parade of tousled beehives, sequined bustiers and polka-dot capris. In the ’70s and ’80s, Gaultier presented biker jackets and tutus, reintroduced men’s skirts, produced corset-style dresses and recorded a house music song, “Aow Tou Dou Zat” (“How To Do That”). The ’90s were equally abundant with collections of mobile furniture, his famous “Classique” scent in a Schiaparelli-esque bottle, hosting “Eurotrash” on Britain’s Channel 4, and innumerable music, film, and theater costumes for projects such as Madonna’s tour, Régine Chopinot’s Ana production, Luc Besson’s film The Fifth Element, and Maurice

His cheeky sentiments are in full form this month at “The Cult of Beauty: The Victorian Avant-Garde 1860-1900,” at S.F.’s Legion of Honor. Conceived by the institution and in collaboration with the Victoria and Albert Museum, the exhibition showcases British Aestheticism—a radical, mashed up streak of countercultural ideas—through a rich brocade of works by William Morris, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Edward Burne-Jones and more. With pieces considered precursors to the Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau movements, this mesmerizing collection of bohemian paintings, architectural drawings, interiors and furnishings would make proper Aunt Violet blush. There are few designers out there who just get women. Lanvin’s Alber Elbaz is one of those rare creatures. He designs for them, makes them feel comfortable and glamorous at the same time, and he goes about it all in the most charming of ways: by being real. He isn’t about putting on airs or pretending to be someone more sensational than who he is—and, by doing that, Elbaz becomes authentically chouette. Ever since he was named artistic director in 2002, his clothes have made editors drop to their knees, season after season, and pray at the fashion altar of Lanvin—the oldest Parisian couturière, founded by Jeanne Lanvin on Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré in 1909. Celebrities love him…along with stylists, customers, retailers alike…who doesn’t have a crush on Alber? When we heard that he was coming to Los Angeles for the Spring 2012 collection’s U.S. premiere, C jumped at the chance for the exclusive interview and a peek inside the world of Lanvin— L.A. style… Congratulations on a beautiful show last night. Moments like these are really precious because I finished the work in Paris, I came here and saw all of you, and it felt really good. They’re very precious because they don’t happen every day. Sometimes I’m questioning my work, questioning today, questioning yesterday, wondering is it good, is it not good, is it too much, is it not enough? I take everything seriously, not like, ‘Well, whatever, let’s do it, and try to be cool.’ I’m not a cool guy. You are actually one of the coolest. I don’t think so. You can’t convince me on that one. Tell us about the space you chose, the Carondelet House in MacArthur Park, near downtown. It was not your typical L.A. venue. You know, it was a choice. I could have said, ‘Why don’t we do it in the Sunset Tower?’ That would have been so easy, so beautiful, so elegant and so L.A. But we were taken out of our element, and you took us there. We had to bring in the walls and bring the chandeliers. We have to work hard for

everything. I look like one of those people who takes everything easy. But I gave a really hard time to everyone in the company about the space, about the rooms. I found it very rustic and very far from everything else, and I said, ‘It’s not Lanvin.’ In 24 hours, we turned it into the world of Lanvin. At the end of the evening, everyone was saying, ‘I feel like I could be anywhere in the world right now, and it’s so special that I’m in the world of Lanvin.’ But it’s a very, very, very hard world. I really work on what it is that I want to say, what I think is important to say, how to say the things that are the truth but without hurting people. Because the truth hurts. You know, it’s like the role of the jesters; they’re joking, but they’re always saying the real message. I mean, talking about L.A. and talking about being skinny, about the red carpet… And then Kate Hudson arriving late… And what she said when she came in—

disappear. And I always ask myself, ‘If I were a woman, would I wear it?’ And things I wouldn’t want to do, I do not do to women. I would not put someone in transparent clothes. Sometimes, I find it very beautiful, but I say, even if it’s transparent, put a little something under it and it’s OK. Like some of the dresses in this collection. Exactly. But I’m not exposing women, I’m not making them look like caricatures. And it’s coming out of respect. It’s an exercise to always work around the word, beauty. You know, I was working with an architect, and he showed me something, and it was really beautiful, but I said, ‘It needs to be a bit more emotional.’ He said, ‘In that case, maybe we should put an antique piece next to that wall to bring the emotion.’ And I said, ‘Can you bring the emotion without that piece?’ Can emotion also be modern? Every time we talk about emotion, it has to be old. That’s the exercise: to introduce beauty and modernity together because usually modern goes with roughness and beauty goes with old. So how to mix those together? Do you feel like that’s what you do for Lanvin? It has this wonderful heritage, and now you bring the modernity? A company like Lanvin has a great sense of tradition. What I’m trying to bring is the newness. And when you bring newness to tradition, it becomes magical. There is magic within your designs, and there’s also a feeling of protection. I see different body shapes, different ages. I see American, Chinese, Middle Eastern, Russian—you know, all different women, different nationalities. When I do a black, long dress, I never think about wearing it on the red carpet. I think of wearing it in a home. It’s almost like a pajama feeling. That’s for me, like, the best long dresses. We’re in L.A., home of the red carpet. When I started the show yesterday—you know, everything I do there is always a reason—I had the carpet unrolled and then rolled back up. And I asked, ‘Is the red carpet a joy or a joke?’ That was my first question because I see girls that are so talented and so fragile and so good, and they have to attend all these red carpets to promote their work. continued on page 190

“i had the carpet unrolled and then rolled back up. and i asked, ‘is the red carpet a joy or a joke?’” that she was sorry she was breastfeeding. [He laughs.] It’s women! I love it! Where does this deep appreciation for women originate? Since I was a kid. I’m hanging more with women, and I feel very comfortable. I’m with women and I understand them past ‘ooh, you’re hot.’ I’m not looking at that. I see women, and I see how they are so well-rounded, and I’m not talking about the body. I’m talking about the personality of doing so many things in parallel. I see so many of the girls that I work with have a job; they have a husband; they are mothers; and, they have to perform. They have to perform parallel. Men don’t perform parallel; they perform one after another: ‘Let me finish at work and then you can speak with me about the child.’ For women, it’s not in three hours, so, ‘Let me get a babysitter and take care of it.’ Do you think in parallel terms? I think round and parallel. You know, when I drape the clothes, and I work in front of the mirror, and I wear black so I can

t least from how it seems on the outside, we should all be as good at multitasking as Nicole Richie. Richie, once best known as Paris Hilton’s BFF (and partner in crime in “The Simple Life”) and something of a party animal, is now, at 30, married to Joel Madden and a mother of two. (Daughter Harlow is four; son Sparrow is two-and-a-half.) On top of that, she has two fashion lines: Winter Kate is her ready-to-wear label; House of Harlow 1960 started with jewelry and has since expanded into bags, shoes and other accessories. In addition, Richie is in the midst of writing her third novel. A fragrance of her own is set for release next fall. In March, she will make a triumphant return to reality television as a mentor to designers on “Fashion Star,” alongside Jessica Simpson and John Varvatos. And she still retains her sly sense of humor—last Halloween, for example, she put on a tracksuit and went as Jennifer Lopez. “I’m half-black, so I’m naturally glowy,” Richie says. “Who doesn’t love JLo?” When we meet for tea one chilly dawn at the Chateau Marmont, a hop, skip and a jump from where Madden and Richie live. It’s really quiet at this obscenely early hour for a celebrity interview, but Richie loves her mornings. The fact that she wakes up every day at five a.m. seems to provide at least one answer to the question: How is Nicole Richie so darn productive? “I need time to myself,” Richie says. “I need to figure out how I’m going to focus so I don’t wake up flustered.” While other people might go for hikes, meditate or work on the screenplays they keep in their bottom drawer during that found time, “I’m drinking coffee, I’m watching bad TV—I just like to do nothing.” Richie’s favorite bad television: “Anything on Bravo. I’m just like, put it in a bag.” Her trash TV-watching takes place in the morning because, at night, her husband “will breathe heavily and make noise. And I’m just like, ‘Stop it.’”

It’s unclear whether or not “Fashion Star”—a cross between “Project Runway” and “The Voice” airing on NBC—can be classified under the “Bad TV” umbrella. The show, says Richie, involves 14 designers who are judged by buyers each week. Those buyers—from H&M, Saks Fifth Avenue and Macy’s—select which pieces should be produced and sold online and in their stores. “It’s really about immediate and accessible fashion,” says Richie, sipping her mint tea, her birdlike shoulders wrapped in a Helmut Lang leather jacket. Of all the designers in the world, Nicole Richie and Jessica Simpson might not be the first people you think of when you think “fashion mentor,” but don’t let the blond locks fool you. Since launching her lines in 2009, Richie has garnered top fashion accolades (including Glamour’s Entrepreneur of the Year award in 2010) and clients from Madonna and Rihanna to Claudia Schiffer. On the show, she says, “I was able to be completely honest.” She gave designers such advice as, “It’s not just smooth sailing,” and tried to force the participants to realize that “you definitely have to understand both the business side and the customer.” Richie, even with her loyal customer base, feels that she’s had to learn the same thing. “There are people who’ve supported my dreams overall, and I’m so thankful for them. But it’s still a new business, and there are challenges every day,” she points out. (Her lines are sold at Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Fred Segal and other stores.) “It’s definitely a lot of work, but I thrive on being challenged. I want to learn more and more every day.” To understand the new, over-productive Richie, you have to recognize what a far cry “Fashion Star” is from “The Simple Life”—a long-running, fish-out-of-water docusoap that borrowed heavily from “Green Acres.” Looking back on those days, Richie now realizes that her first successful foray into exposing her existence to America was actually “a very safe show for me. It was about me exiting my regular life and into someone else’s.” In the past five years since the show ended, Richie has emerged as a designer to watch and a red carpet authority on style (think vintage gowns with piled-on jewelry). Her philosophy about continued on page 190 jewelry is simple: “More is more.

“I can’t sit here and say that it’s easy all day long. I’m just figuring out how to make it work.” C 168

“I can’t just do clothes,” says Lhuillier. “I want to design everything I touch.”

ix years ago, fashion designer Monique Lhuillier was seven months pregnant with son Jack when she and her husband, Tom Bugbee, decided to buy their Holmby Hills home. “I told him, ‘All it needs, Honey, is a coat of paint,’” she laughs. Famous last words. Fast-forward 20 months after a complete stripped-to-the-studs remodel, and Jack was old enough to walk through the front door when the family finally moved in. Lhuillier, with help from builder Timothy Swain and Co., transformed the residence from a Tuscan-style domicile with an Asian-inspired backyard into a modern-French Regency masterpiece, complete with lollipop trees and structured hedges out front. “It was worth the almost two years of renovations to get it exactly how we wanted it,” says the designer, who opens her first New York store this season. “The house has great flow,” Lhuillier notes. Enter it and

you’re immediately struck by the 13-foot custom crystal chandelier hanging in the entry hall. It looks like an upside-down wedding cake—a nod to her success as one of the world’s premier bridal gown names. Move through the rooms and you’ll notice that even though Lhuillier does not shy away from bold hues in her ready-to-wear designs, nearly everything—from the walls to the furniture to the floors—is a shade of charcoal, thundercloud or dove. “I wanted to live in a gray world,” Lhuillier explains, “something calm to help me escape the chaotic pace of the fashion world.” Pops of color, however, appear in the various artworks she and Bugbee, who is also her company’s CEO, collect: a bright turquoise-pigment sculpted work by British artist Jason Martin over the gracious staircase; Murakami mouse paintings in the children’s rooms (the couple also has a two-year-old daughter, Sophia). Lhuillier originally tried to tackle the home’s decor by herself, but it became a full-time occupation in addition to running her fashion empire. Through a friend she met interior designer Jennie Abbott, who, while executing Lhuillier’s vision, helped find and re-upholster pieces from the ’30s through mid-century as well as create custom furnishings—like a Lucite-based dining room table that seems to float. Upstairs, the hallway wall is covered in black-andwhite photos that photographer Nancy Neil takes of the children every six months. The passage leads to a guest room in shades of whispery blue and green. Lhuillier and Bugbee’s master suite includes her workspace, a sitting area and his-and-hers bath and dressing rooms (Bugbee’s has a sauna). Windows open to views of the clean-lined backyard, more recently redesigned, featuring a lap pool and pergola. “I like to have my Sunday morning coffee here and read a magazine,” says the designer of the al fresco space. Flip a switch and streams of water spray over the pool for a soothing sound. In fact, Bugbee had a system installed that allows them to control this and everything from the lights to the audio system via touchpad. French doors connect back to the kitchen—“It’s pretty much where we live,” Lhuillier says—and adjoining family room. She has a flourishing and demanding business— the bridal brand, Bliss wedding dresses, evening gowns, ready-to-wear, ML eveningwear, a bridesmaids’ line, new store, tabletop and gifts, stationery, home fragrances and future plans for accessories, fine jewelry and furniture—but her creativity doesn’t end there, of course. “As a designer,” Lhuillier says, “I can’t just do clothes. I want to design everything I touch.” And that includes her alluring and elegant house. •

aesthetic of Paradox continued from page 148

Casden remembers her first Gaultier couture show in 2002; she instantly fell for the irreverent designer and master tailor. “He can turn a traditional man’s suit into something sexy for a woman,” she says of her favorite aspect of his work. “It’s extremely difficult make a men’s-style suit fit a woman’s body.” She also admires his ability to design for real women. “It really comes across that he loves women with curves and different heights. Others use models that are a certain size, but he goes for it.” Whether it’s a body stocking covered in “tattoos,” a sexy bustier, or a well-cut trench coat, each garment is a study of fine craftsmanship. Gaultier does not just put together headline-making fashion; his work also shows exquisite color sense and immaculate finish. “You are a true designer when people recognize your work without even looking at the label. This is the case for JPG,” Cardin once said of Gaultier. For Casden, his cheekiness is another draw. One of her favorite dresses from a past collection seems plain and simple from the front, but an elaborate cancan bustle in the back practically whispers dirty deeds. “He’s a little bit naughty—but always wearable.” “He’s the male Alice in Wonderland of couture,” adds Tatiana Sorokko, former model and current couture collector. She owns a few Gaultier pieces, including a Spring/Summer 2002 dress named Biffin— “He called it the The Homeless Dress,” she says—a complicated mesh concoction of silk taffeta, fishnet and silk chiffon that was featured in her own 2010 exhibition in the U.S. and Europe (“Extending the Runway: Tatiana Sorokko Style”). To an untrained eye, the whimsical, twisted matrix of fabric is hard to visualize on the body. When Sorokko was going through customs into the United States with the dress, the officer waved her through without asking for duties, saying, “You’ll be in enough trouble with your husband.” Sorokko laughs. “That’s the genius of Gaultier. He takes something that he calls ‘Homeless’ and makes it fabulous couture.” D’Alessandro credits the Frenchman’s longevity and boundless imagination to his attitude. More than the sailor shirt, the perfect Parisian suit or the safety-pinned kilt, his influence is as a contemporary voice, she explains. “He has championed a new kind of beauty and diversity with a signature wit.” And San Francisco aims to honor the designer in the same fashion. Instead of a tra-

ditional fête, the museum will throw an antigala of sorts on March 23 with a club-like atmosphere and performance by female drag artist Fauxnique. International Herald Tribune Fashion Editor Suzy Menkes will have an on-stage conversation with the designer over the weekend. And who knows if more clothes will appear, thanks to Gaultier’s prolific oeuvre. In Dallas, two weeks before the exhibition opened, boxes of clothes from his atelier began to arrive. Gaultier had become inspired by the Texan cowboy and sent over a few new looks—even a hat made out of human hair. “I’m just expecting to go with the flow,” says D’Alessandro. of owning a farm in Calabasas or moving to Napa. “I’m a California cheerleader,” Richie says. “I love the people and the weather. I love my personal space, and the older you get and once you start having children, you really appreciate that. It’s my home. I have history here. I have a lot of inspiration.” For the moment, for Richie, that’s enough. “I’ve been making clothes since I was a little girl,” she says. “If I’m 60, and I’m not selling clothes, I can still design. I won’t let that stop me from doing what I love to do.” •

lanvin’s Wonderland continued from page 165

There are no rules.” This spring, “You’ll see a lot of mixed metals, different feathers, incorporated stones.” As for her Winter Kate collection, Richie sources many of her textiles from India. “I appreciate the colors and the fabric of the culture,” adding, “Home furnishings are also a passion of mine, and I’m hoping to turn both House of Harlow 1960 and Winter Kate into lifestyle brands.” That may, eventually, include children’s clothing, even though she’s hesitant to put extra emphasis on dressing her own. “They’re so young right now. They are into being kids, and that’s important,” Richie says. “My daughter likes to dress up, but it has nothing to do with fashion. It has to do with putting on a Snow White dress, and that’s fine with me. It’s a form of self-expression, and I’m completely fine with that.” Raising a family while juggling all these projects “has its days,” Richie concedes. (She says she travels half the month, taking day trips to Montreal, where her clothing line is also based, and New York.) “I can’t sit here and say that it’s easy all day long. I’m just figuring out how to make it work. But I really don’t have anything to complain about. I have a very supportive family and husband and that makes it so much easier. My parents live here. They’re each ten minutes away from me, and they’re very eager to come over even when I don’t want them to,” she laughs. That closeness to her family and friends—most, she says, are from when she was two—is a reason why she’d never abandon California. Leaving West Hollywood, however, is an option; she dreams

It is part of their job. And how difficult, but it should be a joy. They enjoy the party because they meet all their friends, and it’s easy and nobody needs anything from them because they’re all one big family. But that exposure in the beginning—whom do you wear, what do you wear, turn, show me your back— I think that has got to stop. What do you think of L.A.? I think Los Angeles is a place where you are invited into the homes of your friends. So there is, bizarrely enough, a sense of family. Never ever do people say, ‘It’s such a family city.’ It is always the other side: it’s a rough business town; it is the land where people want to make things happen. Do you read what people write about you? Only bad reviews I will read. It kills me, but only bad. Why is that? Because I learn. My sense of inspiration, more than anything, is not a skirt from the 1970s, from a flea market. Stories inspire me. If I didn’t have spelling mistakes, I would be a writer, but I don’t write. With my clothes I tell stories; this is what I do, I’m a storyteller. Not within words or light but within colors and shapes and forms. What makes a woman stylish? I always say that there are women who dress for other women and there are some who dress for men. What do you wear next to girlfriends and what do you wear next to guys? Two different things. Now, next to these two there is how you dress for you… These are the most stylish women—the ones that are dressed for themselves. •

While she was an actress by trade, Zsa Zsa Gabor, now 94, was a real character herself whose behavior was just as entertaining off screen as on. she had nine marriages, referred to everyone as “Dahlink” and said things like, “i am a marvelous housekeeper: every time i leave a man, i keep his house.” soon after this portrait was taken in her backyard, the hungarian-born blonde essentially quit acting altogether and would make a career out of cameo appearances in the role she always played best—Zsa Zsa.
