love to gild the lily with just the right finishing piece—be it the perfect bag or necklace that tops off the dress oh-so-right. And, when looking through our feature well, I realized the stories in our May issue—while mostly devoted to the finest spring accessories—had another thing in common: smart and sophisticated Californians who are accomplished in their own rights. (For example, there’s the talented design duo Bruce Gregga and William Laman, who opened up their
uber-fabulous Montecito manse for us.) Recognizing such visionaries who live life to the fullest, I decided the best attribute is being passionate about what you do. Our cover subject has taken that motto to heart. Not having wasted a day of her youth,
Dakota Fanning broke onto the scene in I Am Sam (holding her own opposite Hollywood veteran Sean Penn) when she was only six years old. Over the next 12 years, she has led numerous films and has developed from child star to true thespian. That she turned 18 within days of our shoot makes the pictures that much sweeter—she’s a girl now on her way to womanhood. Our fashion subject, Jessica Joffe, is another woman to keep an eye on. The former New Yorker recently moved back to California to focus on her acting career. I say “back” because she studied out west at Stanford (there’s much more to the European-born talent than her Victorian good looks). We present her in this season’s prettiest pastels and throw in the ultimate adornments to pair them with…mainly jewels! Another European model who is now focusing on her acting craft is the very beautiful Liberty Ross. Don’t let her accent fool you: This English rose grew up in the ’bu (Malibu, that is). Living by the beach until she was seven years old, she was a Golden State girl until her family returned to the U.K. Now that she’s in California with her talented director-husband and two gorgeous children, Liberty has come full circle with a house in Malibu overlooking the beach where she was raised. Maybe the term “house” is too liberal; it is actually situated within one of the country’s most iconic mobile-home parks. She has transformed her weekend escape into a comfortable and chic cottage for her family. In fact, the best accessories in life would be the ones you surround yourself with…family and friends. That, and as my grandmother would say, a big smile also goes a long way in finishing

drew Barrymore steps into the world of wine BY ALISON CLARE STEINGOLD

s
he may recall the names Venezia, Padova and fair Verona from grandfather John Barrymore’s turns as one of the finest Shakespearean players on the American stage. But in the Tre Veneto region of Italy’s northeast, a lush terroir where vineyards are lanes of verdant climbing grapevines, the actress/director found sudden inspiration last year for a different kind of project: Barrymore Wines. While most name-protected areas in Italy adhere to strict aging and varietal rules, winemakers may blend freely among the three regions of Friuli Venezia Giulia, Trentino Alto Adige and Veneto. This resulting bianco of the I.G.T. Delle Venezie sports a distinctive snap with a tropical note, yet enough body to stand up to a Memorial Day spread (we’re thinking lemon-kissed fish with tartar sauce, and charred-pepper tapenade). >>

<< To help honor generations of theatrical talent, Barrymore enlisted Angeleno artist Shepard Fairey and his Studio Number One to redesign her family crest. Teaming up with Wilson Daniels, a 33-year-old Napa Valley name in big-ticket wine importing (think DRC, Royal Tokaji), her premiere release for the label—2,000 cases of Pinot Grigio—comes to California this spring. “Wine is all about the journey, the discovery of new places and new varieties,” Barrymore explains. “I’m excited about sharing this with my friends and family and other wine lovers.” •

H
oward Hughes’ command post until the 1950s, “Romaine” was where the notorious producer, playboy and TWA owner edited films such as Hell’s Angels (1930) and Scarface (1932) while a team of operatives tended to his vast empire and extravagant demands. For a time, he was one of America’s richest and most powerful men who held lavish dinner parties here and seduced the starlets of his day (Katharine Hepburn, Bette Davis, Ava Gardner). Author Joan Didion’s 1967 essay “7000 Romaine, Los Angeles 38” makes special tribute to the building forsaken by the societal recluse that Hughes would later become. With such a riveting past, it would be the perfect home for Paola Russo’s new destination retail concept Just One Eye. Drawing from her extensive background in fashion, Russo turned the labyrinthine compound into curated salons of fine art, furniture, jewelry and clothing for men, women and children. In the spirit of a “moving installation,” displays are changed every three weeks, swapping Carlo Bugatti throne chairs for colorful Victor Douieb bronzed rhinos and pieces from Costume National, Proenza Schouler, The Row, Mark Fast and Anthony Vaccarello. “The space is really for someone who knows her stuff—who knows about fashion and art and who’s not after something that is heavily commercialized,” says the store’s buyer. As such, Just One Eye opened last winter with a book signing by Laura and Kate Mulleavy; Russo enlisted Ed Ruscha to design the brand’s online homepage. Just One Eye is also the exclusive U.S. distributor of Gaultier-veteran Alexandre Vauthier and will soon collaborate with Santa Monica jewelry line Hoorsenbuhs. A series of ’40-esque boudoirs highlight a colorful, progressive selection tailored for the west-coast client. Standouts—such as the Verena black-suede wedge sandals, and the Mini Tube mirrored clutch—will be available along with exclusives like the glittering Tyler iPad case in salt and pepper. 166 Geary St., S.F.; jimmychoo.com.

Bold Strokes David Yurman returns to his roots for a redesign of the Rodeo Drive boutique
Ceramic watch, $3,400.
H
aving spent his formative years as a sculptor in Big Sur and San Francisco, fine jeweler David Yurman reopens his Beverly Hills flagship this month with a nostalgic concept: an artist’s atelier. For the first time, the designer will display his paintings and sculptures, plus those by his wife (and creative collaborator), Sybil. “It’s a gallery of sorts,” says Yurman, whose 32-year-old jewelry business is best known for mixing metals and that classic twisted-cable motif. “The jewelry is really the expressive form of our combined art. I wanted to include my direct-weld sculptures—an immediate, fluid way of shaping a metal form directly with heat. Much of our jewelry is derived from this technique.” The renovation by architecture firm Gabellini Sheppard Associates more than doubled the store’s size with marble flooring, walnut countertops and trevira wall coverings. Not to be outshone by its new digs is the collection itself—pieces created exclusively for the west coast include statement-makers such as a Moonlight Ice Cable bracelet with Blue Topaz; Three-drop Starburst earrings; and the new Men’s Spiritual Bead bracelets with black and white pavé diamonds, pavé color-change garnets and pavé blue sapphires. 371 N. Kundalini music streams throughout the house as the lovely hostess whips up a homemade brew of Rooibos tea with Manuka honey. Rabbits and chickens roost in the garden, where the offerings span from sweet peas to blackberries. The conversation skips from Rose’s Buddhist practice to her latest panacea—coconut oil—to talk of the house’s coming members: a raven and a colony of bees. The mother-of-two (daughters are Colette, 15, and Charlotte, 6) shares this idyllic tableau in blog form on her holistic site The Local Rose, launched in February of last year. “I like to get on soap boxes—I have an activist nature,” says the free-spirited Persian American, revealing her doublearrest record for protesting during the Iraq War. “I realized

On the contrary, it can work better,” says the star of an upcoming John Steinbeck adaptation at Venice’s Pacific Resident Theater. n early 2010, Chris Miller traded his house in the Hollywood Hills, where he’d lived for 10 years, for an eighth-floor two-bedroom rental in L.A.’s iconic El Royale building, a skyline landmark where an eclectic bunch of celebrities, directors and industry execs have hung their hats since 1929. “That home had 360-degree views and a swimming pool,” he says. “I downsized in a way that makes me much happier.” (Besides, if the Flower Films co-president and Revolver bar co-owner is in the mood for a dip, he can head to his place in Palm Springs.) Who would decorate his new abode? Ruthie Sommers, designer of East Coast-chic-meets-West Coast boho interiors, of course. The two have been good friends since Miller and Drew Barrymore (his production colleague) stumbled upon her now-shuttered store, Chapman Radcliff, a few years back. Sommers ended up designing their offices as well as Barrymore’s home. Miller’s apartment was very much a collaboration. “Chris would text me about a chair while he was in a meeting,” she laughs. Before Miller moved in, he and Sommers made some changes, installing pristine marble countertops in the kitchen and painting the walls and cabinets a cool lime green. The floors were finished in black-and-white, peel-and-stick vinyl. In fact, this cheap-and-cheerful, high-low mix is representative of the whole dwelling. Sommers brought in a cozy sofa she already had and reupholstered it in luxe, orange French velvet; underfoot is a rug purchased at Sotheby’s Sunset auction for $250; there’s a Story & Clark baby grand piano—“a splurge after producing Whip It.” Views from the master bedroom, complete with a John Saladino bed, stretch north to the Hollywood sign and south to downtown. The result is swell; the place looks like Miller has lived there forever. Most important, he says, “It’s somewhere I can come home to at night and feel comfortable.” •

n 2009, landscape designer (and S.M. native) Steve Siegrist and his wife, fine artist/ sculptor Renée Lotenero, created some planters to house their rare cacti collection. When they brought the twice-fired ceramics to the California Cactus Center for staging (the art of “marrying the plant to the vessel”), the Pasadena nursery loved the handnumbered prototypes, and so did Potted in Atwater Village. Now joining Esther Studios’ Big Sur stripes is a matte set in bone-white and black, and a Point Reyes colorway—“a bit darker and moodier,” explains Siegrist. outing “gastropod” as a course on a menu sounds grammatically reasonable, if not tantalizing. Yet, periwinkles, whelks and abalone falling under gastropoda are nothing more than—wait for it—snails and slugs. Rivaling California’s obsession with Dungeness crab, to try the sweet, scallop-like abalone warrants a notch in a true Golden Stater’s belt. Abalone has been harvested in the rocky kelp reaching from Baja to Oregon since the prehispanic Ohlone. What was once plentiful now dwindles; gone are the halcyon days of “ab-grabbing” and beach barbecues. >> written and edited by alison Clare steingold may 2012

menu << The hunt still exists up in Mendocino and Sonoma counties, but the California Department of Fish & Game, with its punchcard tracking system and strict regulations, keeps close watch: North of the San Francisco Bay, the season runs April 1 through November 30 (closed in July). Rock-pickers and free-divers utilize designated irons to “pop” clamped shells from rocks. Size limits and allowances accommodate for the mollusk’s slow reproduction cycle, overfishing and poaching (estimated at 200,000 creatures annually). ear the ragged coves of what’s now Point Lobos State National Reserve, you’ll find iridescent remnants suggesting the location of California’s first abalone cannery (1899-1928). Commercial diving, too, closed in 1997, but the moratorium has actually pushed aquaculturing forward. Farms along the coast are now the lone places in CA to purchase the meat (about $20/pound). Large outfits like The Abalone Farm in Cayucos and Cultured Abalone in Goleta, for

example, grow the beauties to supply the likes of Morimoto Napa and Benu S.F. Another sustainable option, American Abalone in Davenport, ships its product live in the shell. The 20-year-old Monterey Abalone Company (MAC) has a solid reputation—fans include Christopher Kostow of The Restaurant at Meadowood and Michael Cimarusti of piscatorial-focused Providence in L.A. MAC feeds its abalone hand-harvested peninsula kelp— what they’d eat in the wild. S.F.’s David Baron of Atelier Crenn recently returned from one of the MAC’s foraging expeditions. The chef de cuisine was inspired to prepare a seaweed butter as accompaniment to the “textural, slightly crispy and chewy” seafood he’s known since the Superbowl parties of his NorCal youth. What You See is What You Get

ehind the See’s Candies retail cottage perched awkwardly on L.A.’s La Cienega Boulevard, two giant towers—each filled with 80,000 pounds of Guittard chocolate—stand like steam stacks as workers arrive in the cooler wee hours. Past security, recognizable scents mingle at stations: fresh roasting almonds for California Brittle; molasses for honeycomb-like chips; peppermint for patties. A shockingyellow machine (aptly named Tweety) measures molten butter, sugar, corn syrup and peanuts, then flips and flattens the batter with its spatula-like arm. On parallel conveyer belts, thousands of candies bask under waterfalls of tri-color chocolates, dry off, and go in for another dip in the enrobing room. Here, Lucille Ball and Vivian Vance trained for the 1952 episode of “I Love Lucy” wherein the comediennes, on the assembly line, wrap chocolates at breakneck pace—hilariously stuffing them into their hats, shirts and mouths. Employees—many of whom have been there for more than 40 years—don crisp white coats as they pack and quality-check. Is it 1957? ’86? 2012? The scene isn’t far, or far removed, from the historic first store on 135 Western Avenue and second at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre (look for a pop-up through June 30 at adjacent Hollywood & Highland). ith Pacific Standard Time winding down, auction houses have witnessed renewed interest in works from the region that spawned the Light and Space movement and Hard-Edge painting. On May 6, the Los Angeles Modern Auctions (LAMA) puts up a Santa Barbara collection of more than 100 pieces by the likes of Andy Warhol and David Hockney. The million-dollar question is, of course, how has the SoCal-wide art exhibition affected prices? LAMA director Peter Loughrey thinks things are looking up. “I don’t anticipate any increase in value for Sam Maloof or Eames, but we have already seen some increases for DeWain Valentine, Ed Ruscha, John Baldessari, Roland Reiss and Gerald McCabe, all of which can be tied directly to PST.” lamodern.com.

n a small machine-shop studio overlooking the San Francisco Bay, two young builders plot their version of Utopia, a series of complex ideas often revolving around natural phenomena such as hot springs. Blueprints by Nataly Gattegno and Jason Kelly Johnson of Future Cities Lab have already garnered real-world acclaim from as far afield as Greece and as close as SFMOMA, where their latest model, Hydramax, a prototype of an avant-garde pier set 100 years ahead, is part of the current Buckminster Fuller exhibition. When the married couple talks about their profession, the word “hybrid” is tossed out a lot; a mix of “architects,” “technologists,” “artists,” “craftsmen.” They’re interested in how the tentacles of architecture extend into other formats. “We like to hijack things that already exist,” explains the Cambridge-educated Gattegno. For example, the Hydramax model borrows from Miga Motors, a company that developed a new kind of motor for satellites in space. That innovation helps Hydramax bridge the interstices between earth and water, powering fan-like structures that extend from the roof when the fog bank rolls in. These “fog-feathers” harvest mist to run an internal Aquaponic system—first using water for tanks to grow fish protein, then to fertilize plant fields. The other components are also sensitive to the outside environment—even pier floors float in reaction to rising sea levels. “We see buildings becoming responsive and robotic, and places such as S.F.’s ports
becoming productive again,” says Johnson. This theme of using technology as interplay with environment is an overarching motif in their work, which at this point remains mostly in plan form or as art. “Our relationship with nature should be soft and porous and reactive,” says Johnson, who was raised in Canada. For example, recent plans for a hotel within a skyscraper imagined bottom floors for hollowed-out parks and public spaces, re-calibrating microclimates and rooms suspended in hive-like pods above the greenery. Likewise, the stunning Aurora exhibition in New York (2009) explored how ice-floe movement in the Arctic was affected by humans, and through that, a shifting light field. Trilux, another art installation in Hayes Valley this past fall, used a mash-up of machine-fabricated pieces and handiwork. “That’s the funny thing about technology; there is definitely a synthetic craft aspect,” adds Johnson. Up next, a sensory-light installation with Philips for San Jose’s September, 2012 Zero1 Biennial, a festival focused on the nexus of arts and technology. Those who’ve read The Fountainhead are aware that an architect’s career trajectory can be notoriously long and arduous before one’s magnum opus scratches city sightlines, but gratification is nevertheless on the horizon: Gattegno and Johnson are in the midst of proposals for interactive interiors at big-name startups in Silicon Valley (after all, L.A. street artist David Choe was responsible for Facebook’s interior mural and could clear $200 million in the wake of Facebook’s April IPO). Better yet, Greece will break ground on a version of Future Cities Lab’s Thermaespheres in 2015. The starfish-shaped theater, part of Renzo Piano’s master plan for the new Faliro Park on the coast of Athens, is a bright spot for the embattled country. In true Homeric fashion, the open-air pavilion aims to connect the city back to the wine-dark sea. “The Utopian Impulse: Buckminster Fuller and the Bay Area,” through July 29; future-cities-lab.net. •

t’s Spring Break—the time when most undergraduates depart on their annual rite of passage to Cabo or Cancun for a margarita-induced week of debauchery. Instead, Dakota Fanning, a freshman at NYU’s Gallatin School, and I are having a sober lunch at the Sunset Tower, just down the street from her parents’ house in the Hollywood Hills. Appropriately, we’re discussing why she’ll never be a typical college student: “I’m not going to school for a career. I’m going for my own interest, for myself. I already know what I want to do forever.” Of course, acting is what she’s done all along. This summer, she’ll film Very Good Girls—opposite Elizabeth Olsen—a movie about best friends racing to lose their virginity the summer after high school who end up falling in love with the same guy (played by Anton Yelchin). A torrid teenage love triangle? “It’s really the story of girls trying to figure out who they are and what their place in the world is,” Fanning says diplomatically. And how fitting: In reality, Olsen and Fanning both roamed the hallways of Campbell Hall in North Hollywood before matriculating to NYU. (They still share a group of friends.) The two first met when Olsen, four years her senior, was Fanning’s tour guide as an incoming high-schooler. Although there’s no current boyfriend, I ask Fanning if she’s ever had to fight over one in real life. “Maybe. I guess so.” Did she win? “Yeah,” she giggles. Fanning was home schooled until eighth grade; for better or worse, the young star spent her formative years on set, where the rules of sharing and problem solving seemed hedged in her favor. Understandably so—which other six-year-olds do you know have been nominated for a SAG Award? As for “traditional school,” she became a member of the cheerleading squad (“one of the flying ones”), was crowned homecoming queen and graduated with honors last year. In the wake of her 18th birthday, she finds a fresh beginning to an already impossibly charmed life. “I feel like this new chapter as an adult is almost like starting over,” she says. “That’s the interesting part about getting older in this business. I’m excited to present myself differently.” In Effie, which will be released this fall, Fanning plays a woman— not a child—for the first time. Written by Emma Thompson, the Victorian period piece places Fanning (the only non-Brit cast member) as the title-character wife who receives a hard-won annulment from the hugely influential, yet sexually inept, 18th-century art critic John continued on page 134 Ruskin. “She realized

ou can never predict what draws someone to a house. For interior designer Bruce Gregga, it was an exotic street name—China Flat Road—that first intrigued him in the early 1980s. Three years ago, when he and his partner, William Laman (of the local decor mecca), were looking for a new residence in Montecito, the serendipity of finding a property for sale on that street was irresistible. It helped, too, that the 40-year-old Hollywood Regency-style dwelling had exquisite mountain views and 5,000 square feet of space for the pair’s elegant, varied collection of furniture and art. But updating was needed. Gregga lengthened the already-tall windows and doors, replastered and moved some walls, and he laid marble underfoot in the entryway and gallery and antique herringbone-patterned wood floors elsewhere. In the living room, he introduced high oval windows, “inspired by Venetian architecture,” and removed extraneous gilt from a fireplace. “Bruce cleans up the spaces and gives them detail,” Laman says, pointing to an 18th-century Italian table with bone inlay under an arrangement of drawings, across from another table in English Brighton Pavilion style. The result is “edited and orderly,” he says, and while the groupings are formal, the feeling is warm and personal, thanks, no doubt, to the fact the pieces are longtime favorites. “It’s a collection of things I like,” says Gregga, adding lightly, “We cart the same old junk from house to house.” There’s a Botero oil Gregga bought in 1958 in Mexico, before anyone had heard of the artist, and Russian Constructivist works acquired over a span of 25 years. It’s not the fame of the artist that’s the attraction, Laman notes. For Gregga, it’s the form, texture and time period; Laman has a love of form and whimsy. “I always wanted to play with furniture,” Gregga adds. “When I was growing up, my mother would never know where it would be or what color,” because of his early decorating efforts. He went on William Laman and Bruce to a noteworthy career, designing sets and inteGregga with riors for the first Estée Lauder ad campaigns. their Parsons Through his Chicago-based design firm, Jack Russell terrier, Mazie. cottage proved an ideal setting to display pieces from the 17th through 19th centuries that could still fit a contemporary lifestyle. The overall effect—“we call it early California cockamamie,” Gregga says—is a bit more casual than that of their residence. The demands of the business leave little time for entertaining; instead, the house, which they share with an attentive Parsons Jack Russell terrier named Mazie, is “private and very comfortable,” says Laman. “I love the flow of it.” A long gallery with striking abstract paintings connects the living room with the master bedroom, where étagères (designed by Billy Baldwin for Cole Porter’s New York apartment) hold everything from an African mask to a Chinese Hanperiod bear and English porcelain. Along the way, the library is a serene space for reading, while farther on the sunroom opens to a swimming pool. The spirit of eclecticism is especially apparent in the dining room: Brighton Pavilion-style chairs surround the stone-based table custom made in Los Angeles by Dennis & Leen. This coupling sits under a William Laman shop chandelier that’s part of a lighting collection inspired by Giacometti and fabricated continued on page 134 in France. An industrial wooden screw,

T here’s a German phrase that goes Aller anfang ist schwer. It means, “The first step is always the hardest.” For Jessica Joffe, the Hamburg-born writer, model and now actress, the hard part is over. Two years ago, she packed up her Manhattan apartment and relocated to Beverly Hills in order to take acting more seriously. (She nurtured her passion for theater as a boarder at Bedales School in England as well as during her earliest stint in California as a Stanford undergrad.) What originally brought her here (“boys wearing no shirts and riding skateboards around campus”), however, was a different dream, and after earning her degree in comparative literature, she moved to N.Y., took a job with the New York Observer and later freelanced for other publications such as Glamour and German Vanity Fair. Immersed in the city’s fashion scene, she returned to modeling at the age of 25. Soon enough, Joffe was everywhere, from top ad shoots (Banana Republic, J. Crew) to Fashion Week and the best parties. “Although I think the relationship between modeling and acting is tenuous, when I started doing commercials and shorts, the bug bit me again,” she says. Last year, in her on-screen premiere, she played an aid worker in Marc Forster’s Machine Gun Preacher and, more recently, appeared in the comedy Celeste and Jesse Forever. With an unwavering wit and old Hollywood good looks (she’s also a new face of Elizabeth Arden), the ingénue meets the world on her own terms. “It may have been an unconventional path,” she admits to rediscovering acting, “everyone gets to where they need to be in their own time.” •

ith a jet-black mane, fair white skin, paleblue eyes and an affable English voice, this London transplant is as articulate as she is beautiful. She still models, doing “bits and bobs here and there,” but Liberty Ross has also begun to appear on film—first in Madonna’s W.E. and now Snow White and the Huntsman (out June 1), directed by her husband, Rupert Sanders. to Europe this summer, why don’t we just rent one of those beach houses?’ My mum and I walked onto that deck. I called Rupert, who was on a shoot in Mexico, and I said, ‘I found a house, Honey. Keep working!’ It really transformed our life here. It was really meant to be—that’s all I can say. We were completely sold. KC: SO, yOu ARE ORIGINALLy FROM LOS ANGELES? LR: I was born in London, though I lived here until I was seven. Even when we went back to England, I would return to L.A. for every holiday. I grew up on this very sand. When I sent my mum a photo of my children running along the beach, she sent me the exact same photo of my brother and me. That’s when I realized I was sort of repeating history. We were here because my dad [Ian Ross] owned Flipper’s, the famous roller disco in the ’70s and ’80s. Supposedly, Quentin Tarantino was a junior skate guard there. We’ve got pictures of Arnold Schwarzenegger putting on blue-suede roller skates. I’m in the early stages of making a film about it...The shocking things my older brothers got up to there! what you see is what you get continued from page 86 mother’s recipes, See’s opened signature shops all over the western U.S. with a matching fleet of sidecar Harley-Davidsons. Production was split between L.A. and S.F. in 1935. Today, there are more than 200 retail stores—and even New Yorkers can find beloved Bordeaux at Bloomie’s. The 91-year-old brand takes pride in taste. Says Senior Production Manager Chuy Soria, “Our ingredients are to our specifications. The cream that we use is 36% fat—it’s like the whipping cream you find in the market but 10% better.” Better? “Better. More fat. More flavor,” he smiles. Annually, the confectionery produces 1 billion pieces and sells 31 million pounds of sweets. So are you a “Nuts and Chews” or “Soft Centers” fan? she should be loved and that she deserved more.” Has Fanning ever been in love? “Ahh, not really. No. I would have to say no…But, Effie wasn’t really in love with her husband, either, which made it easier.” The transition is truly like looking at Fanning for the first time. As much as we never want to see the little six-year-old girl from Conyers, Georgia all grown up, it’s hard to fathom that Fanning’s true range is still unknown. Last year, she wrapped The Motel Life with on-screen brothers Stephen Dorff and Emile Hirsch. She plays Hirsch’s girlfriend, forced into prostitution in Reno, Nevada. When life spins out of control after a tragic car accident, Fanning provides the steering voice of reason. She says of Dorff, who appeared in Sofia Coppola’s 2010 film Somewhere with her younger sister Elle, “When I first met him, he was like ‘OMG, you sound just like Elle.’ I was like, ‘Elle sounds just like me. I was here first. She learned it all from me.’” Dakota does indeed carry the torch: Elle’s debut role was playing the younger version of Dakota’s character in I Am Sam when she was only two. “We relate to each other in a way that naturally other people can’t,” says Fanning. “Eventually, I’m sure we’ll do another movie together.” For now, they are fueling a sartorial bonfire as the most anticipated sister duo since the Olsen twins. And, while they may not be cashing in on any perks of adulthood yet, the Fannings love getting dolled up.
Dakota, whose uniform at Campbell Hall consisted of a navy-blue polo shirt and khakis, was photographed for this portfolio in just-off-the-runway Chanel Haute Couture. “Elle went to the show in Paris. I was very jealous,” she says in a proud, big-sisterly way. Fanning, after all, had her first photo shoot with Karl Lagerfeld when she was 13 and still remembers her earliest “fancy” bag being a small Chanel purse she still carries. While designers used to custom-craft fashions for Fanning, she’s excited to be mature enough to fit into ready-to-wear. Today, it’s a smart pair of army-green Céline sandals and a billowy white blouse that casually reveals a lace bra. Indeed, she’s a young woman now. Last year, Fanning was the subject of much discussion stemming from a Marc Jacobs ad that was banned in the U.K. because of a provocatively placed, oversized perfume bottle. She says, “We all ended up laughing about it. My friends were like, ‘You’re corrupting the London youth with your Oh, Lola! ads’—I was like ‘I know!’” If you’re worried about Fanning growing up too fast, rest assured: There are no apparent warning signs—no hangover, no new tattoos, piercings or cigarettes sticking out of her purse. She can’t even have a fake ID (“that just wouldn’t work”). It’s not a mystery why she’s thus far made it unscathed. Her theory (take note, Dina and Lindsay): “My mom is just my mom.” Before uprooting the family from Georgia for pilot season 12 years ago, her parents were both professional athletes—her mother a tennis player; her father a baseball player. For Fanning, it’s a mixed bag of traditional values and discipline. “Just because I can make decisions in my career doesn’t mean that crosses over at home. My parents tell me what to do. Luckily, they don’t believe in grounding.” I ask Fanning if she has any more exciting plans for Spring Break, since this interview surely can’t be at the top of the list. “No. I think this is fun,” she insists. I’d long forgotten I was talking to an 18-year-old until she excitedly blurts out, “Plus, I’m going to Disneyland with my friends on Saturday.” •
boxwood hedge with nearby bonsai planters with century-old varieties of white pine, gingko and bougainvillea. There are sculptural touches, too: a stone column from France, mushroom-like staddle stones, an ancient Turkish oil jar turned upside down. On their international shopping trips for the store several times a year, they don’t intend to buy pieces for the house. But, says Gregga, “When you see something you like, it’s spontaneous combustion.” •

Kc: When did you move stateside? Lr: In 2004, Rupert and I came to have our first baby here. We were in England, and I sort of had this big career, and he was really doing well with commercials. Then I got pregnant, and we wanted to be where we didn’t really know anyone. My agents all said that I might as well move to Beirut. Kc: Do you surf? Lr: We actually paddleboard. It’s quite funny; there’s a whole etiquette that goes down on these beaches. When we first moved in, a lot of surfers came over and were like ‘Hi, do your surf?’ Once we said no, they were like, ‘Welcome!’ They’re so happy when you’re not stealing their waves. Kc: The Volkswagen van says a lot about your lifestyle! Lr: For Christmas, I surprised Rupert with the VW. It has always been his dream car. We’re planning our own camping trip to El Capitán in Santa Barbara. There are a lot of people we pile into this trailer. It’s probably one of the reasons for getting the VW. It can be an extra bedroom. Kc: What’s the best thing about living here? Lr: To have contrast in life is so important. When we get here, we turn off our mobiles. We have no computers. It’s just what it is. We’re quite social during the day, and we love having loads of people over. All of our neighbors know my family. It’s a good vibe. •

mounted like modern sculpture, contrasts with shelves of 19th-century English china and garniture of Delftware. With cream walls and a restrained palette, the home’s interior relies on paintings, porcelain and the occasional chair textiles for color. Likewise, outdoors, where Gregga worked with landscape architect Heide Baldwin, the overall effect is textured shades of green. Behind the pool, globe-like bay trees alternate with spiky cypress; around the house, a series of garden “rooms” enclose a precisely trimmed low

RICHaRD GERE, 1982 Herb Ritts and Richard Gere first met in 1979. On a road trip, Ritts, though not yet a professional photographer, had the mind to take some pictures of the soon-to-be-famous actor at a San Bernardino gas station. Later that year, when Gere needed photos for spreads in Vogue, Esquire and Mademoiselle, he thought of the film, and those shots launched Ritts’ career. Ritts continued to point his camera at the star (here, Brazilian painter Sylvia martins dives into a Hollywood Hills pool while Gere fields a call). He even introduced Gere to his first wife, Cindy Crawford, at a barbecue hosted by his mother in Westwood.
