ust saying the word “summerâ€? takes me back to that last school bell in June, knowing we had three looooong lazy months ahead to relax, bask in the sun, surf and have nightly bonfires on the beach‌when not working a job or internship, of course. There’s a paradigm shift in everyone’s mood during this time. With that in mind, we’ve dedicated this entire issue to the best three months of the year.

In C What’s Hot, we showcase different C insiders and their favorite places to vacation,

plus some new tips and trends alongside tried-and-true spots‌and in C Fashion, we highlight the finest one-piece swimsuits (who knew they could be so chic?!). From modern pool accessories to sun-proof beauty, St. Helena’s dining boom to LACMA’s blowout Collectors Committee Weekend, we’ve got it covered. Building on this theme of full coverage, our features traverse the state. We shot C’s cover

subject, Rachel Weisz, in an industrial loft overlooking downtown L.A.’s cityscape. We go in-depth with this talented thespian on life as a celebrated actress, motherhood and her marriage to 007 himself, the dashing Daniel Craig. From there, we venture to Malibu, where we’ve discovered one of the most spectacular homes. Antiques and arts impresario Richard Shapiro opens his beachfront villa in a beautiful portfolio shot by famed interiors photographer Lisa Romerein. The mix of decor in this stone fortress is both alluring and breathtaking. I am ready to move in. Heading north, model Erin Wasson sports pre-fall’s gypsy-inspired fashions at Rincon Beach in Santa Barbara County. The model, jewelry designer and now actress is navigating Hollywood like a pro—and the same can be said for the way she handled the reins in “Wild Horses.â€? Our trip north continues as we present wine country’s idyllic, effortless lifestyle in “Stealing Beauty,â€? starring white-hot model/vintner Michèle Ouellet. Think of a collage from the Bertolucci/Liv Tyler film and some stunning vineyard landscapes, and you have pages creating a visual vacation in their own right. And isn’t that really the point of summer‌to get away from the everyday tasks and truly let go? We hope this issue of C starts your season off on the right foot‌one that happens

Great Expectations

L

os Angeles hasn’t produced many homegrown stars as of late, but that’s about to change. Remember Justin Timberlake-as-Sean Parker in a morning-after repartee with a witty Stanford undergrad in The Social Network? That was Dakota Johnson’s breakout film, which she explains in a soft voice, “Could be one of the most amazing experiences I ever have in my life. Indeed, it was a strong beginning, but the 22-year-old (who moved from Aspen to L.A. when she was 12) didn’t stop there. She has since appeared in 21 Jump Street, The Five-Year Engagement, the Sundance hit Goats, and is the current face of Japanese retailer Uniqlo and L.A.-based Oliver Peoples. This past

spring, Johnson landed the lead role on FOX’s pilot “Ned Fox is My Manny,â€? a comedy about a single mother who works at a bar. She replaced Abby Elliott of “Saturday Night Liveâ€? for the part, which was written for a 26-year-old—a gig not even her parents (Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith) could have engineered for her. This American Life (as a Hollywood Gypsy)

My sister and I had expected our movie-star mansion at last. But when I saw the building and the neighborhood that was to be our new home, I almost dropped my canvas bag of clothes. Lexington Avenue was more concrete than grass. More sickly palm trees and dilapidated housing than the expected yearround California perfection. It looked as if a hurricane had barged through and no one had bothered to pick up. Our first American apartment was located on the second floor of a very noisy complex, a two-story dove-gray structure with a gated pool shaped like a cashew in the middle of a cement courtyard. Music spilled out of the windows, unfamiliar melodies bouncing off one another in decidedly non-American flight. Bars covered the windows, and graffiti crawled in bold strokes along the walls. I told my mother I had never imagined living somewhere identical to Butyrskaya Tyurma (Butyrka Prison) back in Moscow. “At least it has a roof, my mother said as she squeezed my shoulder and bravely passed through the front gates.

At Hollywood High, school was an empire divided, dictated by geography as much as by identity. On one end of the campus, the one closer to Hollywood Boulevard, you’d find the black-trench-coat territory, the Performing Arts Magnet School. Girls with purple hair, guys in dresses, and other artistic types with pierced noses and studded tongues lurked in the cavernous hallways of the auditorium, with its underbelly of music classrooms. Marafioti has readings this summer at Vroman’s It also housed the cafeteria— in Pasadena (August the only common ground for 7th; vromansbookstore. com) and S.F.’s all students, regardless of their Booksmith (August 9th; fashion sense, ethnicity, or booksmith.com). level of weird. Everybody on this end aimed to be a superstar someday. Hollywood High had given the world Judy Garland, Carol Burnett, and even Cher, who is adored as much as soccer by half of Europe. Using a prepaid international calling card (essential in an an immigrant neighborhood) I called Zhanna to tell her I’d be attending the same school that Cher once did. She screamed into the phone. According to Zhanna, and Romani tradition, it couldn’t be a simple coincidence but a sign of great things to come. I hoped so. After all, I was in America now. Great things were as common here as Twinkies. Excerpted from American Gypsy by Oksana Marafioti, to be published in July, 2012 by Farrar, Straus and Giroux, LLC. Copyright Š 2012 by Oksana Marafioti. ith white sandy beaches and plunging granite cliffs, Sardinia’s Emerald Coast— or the Costa Smeralda—is a playground for Hollywood royalty (Johnny Depp and Meryl Streep) and the international jet set. They flock to the strand for its exclusive regattas, polo matches, posh soirĂŠes and fine-boutique shopping. This summer, in honor of the lauded Hotel Romazzino’s 50th anniversary, four new seaside villas (each with its own private butler, garden and pool) will be unveiled. Former model for Fendi and Giorgio Armani, among others, Laurel Barrack—who owns the resort with husband Tom Barrack (of L.A.’s Colony Capital)—has overseen the redesign. “The anniversary is the perfect time to update a hotel from the ’60s with some California retro flavor,â€? says Barrack, who worked closely with architect Tonino Fadda and Los Angeles interior designer Joan Behnke. The team later collaborated with local interior decorator Beatrice Bez. The challenge was to stay true to the architecture Prince Karim Aga Khan IV employed when he hired architect Michele Busiri Vici to create the original retreat in the early 1960s. “I wanted to balance the ethnic interior with a colorful, modern vibe.â€? Think burnt orange tie-dyed pillows, handwoven turquoise-and-cream wool rugs and custom olive Loro Piana cashmere throws. “This isn’t your average hotel room,â€? says Barrack. “But this isn’t your average clientele, either.â€? ith this store, the luxury is in its space, its high ceilings,” says Valentino’s Pier Paolo Piccioli of the Italian brand’s new Rodeo Drive flagship. Not that the two-level, David Chipperfielddesigned outpost is devoid of splendor (see the American walnut walls and chandeliers made of magnifying glass lenses). Opened to celebrate Valentino’s 50th anniversary— with a bash attended by a stylish who’s who of L.A.—it is indeed large. But, despite its grand scale, the shop exudes an intimate feeling. “The idea was to make it like a modern Roman palazzo,” says Piccioli’s co-Creative Director, Maria Grazia Chiuri. “Each area has an attitude of its own, and you want to spend time there, like in a house.” A house filled with beautiful lace party dresses, impeccable suits and the most coveted shoes and bags, that is. 324 N. Waterproof products are key this season—as temperatures heat up, everything stays in place.

or me, summer is all about looking healthy and fresh, and your makeup should mimic that. Keeping it simple, however, doesn’t mean boring. First, you’ll need a golden glow (I really love Soleil Tan De Chanel bronzer and Laura Geller’s Blush-n-Brighten in Sunswept). Then have fun

with color. When using bold hues, keep it focused—apply to just your eyes, lips or nails. I suggest a flirty orange lipstick—Heat Wave by Nars—and a cool yellow polish like Mimosa by Chanel. Instead of all-over shadow, try Chanel’s waterproof iĂžiÂ?ˆ˜iĂ€ĂŠÂˆÂ˜ĂŠ6ˆœÂ?ˆ˜i]ĂŠ>ĂŠÂŤĂ€iĂŒĂŒĂžĂŠÂŤĂ•Ă€ÂŤÂ?i]ĂŠ>˜`ĂŠ >`i]ĂŠ>ĂŠĂƒĂŒĂ€ÂˆÂŽÂˆÂ˜}ĂŠ}Ă€ii˜°ĂŠU

t’s all about getting a sexy, tousled look this summer at Morrison Hair, a new salon above North Coast Highway in Laguna Beach and unlike anything in the area. Clients check in and out via handheld devices, and staffers are trained in making a proper cup of tea (a nod to lead stylist James Morrison’s Scottish roots). GOOD ENOUGH TO EAT Perfume inspires daring dishes at Woodward’s Garden in San Francisco

A

chance encounter on Twitter blossomed into aromatic greatness. Alyssa Harad, scent-junkie and author of Coming to My Senses (Viking, $26, July), and S.F. chef Dana Tommasino (known for her literary-themed dinners) selected five indie perfumes from the Golden State to translate into whimsical cuisine. First, guests at Tommasino’s Mission restaurant, Woodward’s Garden, sniffed each fragrance on small props such as peacock feathers and paper moustaches. Then the corresponding dish was served. “Perfume for me is all about ‘synesthesia,’says Harad. “Using one sense to describe another.

DRINK For Yosh Han’s Sottile, a light-filled fragrance of rose, Lily of the Valley and an undercurrent of green, the chef added verdant notes to a classic Sorelle Bronca prosecco Particella 68 by incorporating a twist of Meyer lemon, dried rosebuds and a dash of pomegranate juice. SALAD Roxana Villa’s Chaparral, a woodsy, dry scent inspired by the native California landscape with

hints of sage and frankincense, became a grassy mix of shaved delta asparagus, cipollini onion, grilled citrus, ricotta, toasted sage and fennel. MAIN COURSE A play on Mandy Aftel’s Cepes and Tuberose: parchment-wrapped steelhead trout, fava beans, fennel, purple fingerling potatoes and a wild mushroom-jasmine ragout. “The jasmine made the mushrooms almost rich—like a truffle,â€? says Ineke Ruhland, who attended the event with fellow featured perfumers Han and DelRae Roth. DESSERT Ruhland’s Evening Edged in Gold, a mixture of saffron, cinnamon and osmanthus flower—an unusual bloom with a leathery, apricot-like aroma— was reimagined as saffron ice-milk with poached plums, cinnamon, vanilla, saffron and osmanthus. “It was perfect for an oriental fragrance with gourmand notes and done in an adult way,â€? she says. Roth’s chic and reserved Mythique, the final fragrance with a distinctive heart of iris root, had even the perfumers guessing beforehand. “I couldn’t have imagined it being anything ÂœĂŒÂ…iĂ€ĂŠĂŒÂ…>Â˜ĂŠ>ʓiĂ€ÂˆÂ˜}Ă•i]Ê,ÂœĂŒÂ…ĂŠĂŒÂœÂ?`ĂŠ >˜°ĂŠ ˜`ĂŠÂˆĂŒĂŠĂœ>Ăƒ°ĂŠU

A new batch of sunscreens are formulated for better-than-ever coverage BY CAROLINE CAGNEY When it comes to sun protection, the mile-long list of products still confounds even the most well-informed Californians. While The Food and Drug Administration’s new sunscreen label regulations go into effect this June, making changes to how they are being marketed—such as banning the term “sunblock since the claim is misleading—recent studies show a host of additional concerns about ingredients. Additions include lemon trees and enameled yellow table tops alongside dark upholstery and hammeredbrass stools—inspired by the palette of tropical sun and dense black in Henri Matisse’s 1912 Tangier paintings. “It’s still colorful,” says Formby, “yet with a refined sophistication that plays against the exotic textiles.” 572 N. Nine reasons why St. Helena is this year’s hottest dining destination

C

harles Krug. Heitz. School House Vineyard. St. Helena soil is hallowed ground—as far as auction-surfing collectors are concerned, anyway. This year, with Meadowood now polishing its third Michelin star, a burst of gustatory energy arrives along Highway 29: The options for three-square begin with the new menu at GOTT’S ROADSIDE (gotts.com). There’s also FARMSTEAD’s Sunday brunch (longmeadowranch.com), where the doughnut holes are served with decadent Meyer-lemon dipping sauce. For a Napa spin on the hard stuff, organic cocktail originator Scott Beattie will soon make a stir at the anticipated GOOSE & GANDER (goosegander.com), set in the Martini House’s 90-year-old bungalow. Another storied spot—the Keller Meats building—now plays home to Austin’s James Beard Awardnominated, mod-Mex eatery LA CONDESA (lacondesanapavalley.com). While the first-Friday “CHEERS!â€? evening (cheerssthelena.com) is worth checking out after hob-nobbing with vintners at perennial standby COOK (cooksthelena.com), venturing beyond downtown leads to Christopher Kostow and THE RESTAURANT AT MEADOWOOD (therestaurantatmeadowood.com). At last, it has reopened with a gleaming new kitchen and dining room. The 15-to-20 courses of gallery-worthy, edible masterpieces arrive on locally-made pottery by Lynn Mahon. In addition to Meadowood, wine-country architect Howard Backen has built Leslie Rudd’s casual FRENCH BLUE (frenchbluenapa.com), poised to become a bona fide neighborhood hub. To celebrate the opening, Rudd has plenty of corks to pop: At nearby PRESS (press sthelena.com), his brand-new cellar houses a 10,000-bottle collection of Napa varietals, giving Rudd’s steakhouse one of the largest lists of local names (all 1,200) anywhere.•

Historic events such as the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee (June 2-5), Royal Ascot racing (June 19-23), Wimbledon (June 25July 8) and, of course, the Summer Olympics (July 27-Aug. 12; london 2012.com), have set the city abuzz with excitement, so pack your Mulberry bags (dare we suggest a Burberry trench) and away you go. ounding down the stone path of her Venice compound, Erin Wasson swings open the front gate with a friendly, “Hey man.” As the model leads me to the house—a modern rental a block from the beach (her permanent home nearby is being renovated)—she hands me a bottled concoction (apple with turmeric root from Moon Juice) and starts explaining why she had to push our interview back a couple days, “I just got in last night, been on the road for five days. RV road-dogging through Montana, Idaho, Oregon and Wyoming. I was blowing in the wind, with dust in my boots and sunshine at my heels.” Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, Wasson has lived in Venice for more than 10 years (keeping an apartment in N.Y.), and she seems in every respect the bohemian cowgirl next door—in constant pursuit of artistic expression but not quite anti-establishment. Take for example, Low Luv, the jewelry line she started in 2009, which has been guided by her close proximity to some of world’s top fashion talent. She walked exclusively for Givenchy this spring, has appeared on the covers of Elle and French Vogue and has worked with everyone from Mario Testino to Karl Lagerfeld. “Being in the industry, you learn all these tiny lessons over the years that collectively seep into your subconscious,” she says. In January, Wasson traveled to Argentina to study silver smithing with a Mapuga tribe (“They ornament their horses more than any fashion editor sitting front row could bedazzle herself”). She’ll return to South America this summer for an adventure with a group of nomadic riders in Brazil (the Texan has been an avid equestrian since childhood). “These people are so off the grid,” she says enviously. Back in Hollywood, the spotlight is on the June release of Tim Burton’s Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, starring Wasson, Benjamin Walker and Dominic Cooper. It seems to suit her tastes: “There’s no f-ing love story in it. Nobody twinkles. Nobody is going through teenage angst. It’s for adults.” For Wasson, like any free spirit, there’s never a real plan, but she does have a finish Fendi dress, line: “I’ll be sitting on a ranch raising $3,990. Marco Bicego my own horses eventually. That earrings, $2,520, Ãii`Ê ÃÊÌ iÀi°Ê ̽ÃÊ> Ü>ÞÃÊLii ÊÌ iÀi°»ÊU Bloomingdale’s.

I

t’s unlikely that, at first glance, one would take Rachel Weisz for a surfing enthusiast. This, of course, would be an assumption based on no factual information, merely a conjecture that the Cambridge-educated thespian would never be interested in paddling into a wave. But, over tagine in an East Village Moroccan cafe, Weisz, in dark jeans and a white button-down shirt, manages to bring up the sport more than once. “I’ve never actually done it,â€? she admits, “but I wish I could. I think then I would spend more time in California because the surfing is great there.â€? Of course, the waves aren’t the only draw. “One of my favorite artists is in L.A.‌Raymond Pettibon.â€? Also, she remarks, “the sushi is incredible.â€? Despite the west coast’s siren song, most of Weisz’s time is spent in this N.Y. neighborhood that treats her like any other resident; perhaps that’s why she has made it her home for the past six years. “Everyone moans about the city changing and becoming gentrified, but I think the East Village still has a little edge and also has a community,â€? she says. Weisz’s sixyear-old son Henry (with her ex, director Darren Aronofsky) even attended pre-school next door to where we’re lunching. Over the past year, Weisz hasn’t had time to be involved in much other than work. Two projects, 360 and The Bourne Legacy, will hit the big screen on the same day this August, and Oz will be out next spring. Although her role in 360 is admittedly a small one (Weisz shot her part in less than a week), she committed because it reunited her with Fernando Meirelles, who directed her Academy Award-winning performance in The Constant Gardener. Weisz has also shot an as-yet untitled picture with Terrence Malick (costarring Ben Affleck and Rachel McAdams). With Malick, “There is no script, so you’re showing up to kind of just do jazz free-form with the professor.â€? Clearly, the people, particularly directors, often dictate her career path. In 360, based on La Ronde, the popular Arthur Schnitzler play, Weisz stars opposite Jude Law as a wife carrying on an affair with a much younger Brazilian man. It’s an ensemble piece about relationships and the momentous effect that one seemingly innocuous event can have on another. Or as she

aptly explains it: “Someone sleeps with someone, sleeps with someone, sleeps with someone, sleeps with someone and then it gets back to the beginning.â€? The Bourne Legacy, however, is about new beginnings. It’s an extension of the blockbuster trilogy, except in this turn, the focus is not actually on Jason Bourne (the character made famous by Matt Damon). “He’s in the periphery of the story,â€? Weisz explains, “but it’s about a new military program and I am thrown together with Jeremy Renner’s character by circumstance, because,â€? she hesitates so as not to spoil any plot points from the highly anticipated thriller, “well, we need each other.â€? When pressed about how she might spend the next few months after back-to-back shooting, she shares only that she won’t be working. “I think I’d just like to be a mom for a while,â€? she says happily. That’s but one example of the actress’s containment. Whether discussing her craft or her son, Weisz is noticeably thoughtful and measured in her speech. She wears minimal jewelry; a single gold wedding band is the only indication of her marriage to another very famous actor, Daniel Craig. The two wed last June, after co-starring in ghost story Dream House, but Weisz prefers to keep details of the relationship private. She is, however, convinced that being a mother has helped her become a better actress. She confesses she is still scared when signing onto a new role: “I want to always feel like it’s a stretch and that I’m not quite sure I can pull it off,â€? she explains, “And I think that is truly the right reaction.â€? Having Henry forced Weisz to approach her job in a much different way. “I used to get really affected by my work, but when you have a kid, you have to come home and be there mentally,â€? she says. “When the director says cut, it’s all make-believe, and strangely enough, that took me a little bit of time to work out.â€? One would assume that the exciting projects ahead—the Malick film and Oz, which tells how the wizard arrives in Emerald City—would lead Weisz to feel settled when reflecting on her career. She pauses before considering a future without acting: “One always has to toy with the fantasy of abandoning something and trying something else, right?â€? 7iÂ?Â?]ĂŠĂŒÂ…iĂ€i½ĂƒĂŠ>Â?Ăœ>ĂžĂƒĂŠĂƒĂ•Ă€w˜}oĂŠU

R

ichard Shapiro wasn’t looking for a new abode when he set off to view a property for sale on Malibu’s Broad Beach. He was perfectly happy at his Holmby Hills residence, running his worldy empire of curation and design in town (Studiolo collection, 8905 boutique, and Richard Shapiro Antiques), and fashioning gardens and residences for clients. “I went on a lark,” recalls Shapiro. “I stepped inside the front gate, saw the view and discovered total seclusion. I was smitten. Within 30 minutes I knew exactly the house I would build here.” Three years later, he stands in the ethereal, light-filled living room overlooking the ocean. The retreat provides a year-round escape—a fantasy with the feeling of a Mediterranean hideaway. On the edge of the bluff, a pair of handsome 200-year-old Monterey cypresses frame the view. Steps lead down to a peaceful stretch of coast. Pelicans in formation hover and swoop, and silvery whales bask in kelp beds just off shore. “I originally planned it as a weekend house, but I’ve found I’m spending more and more time here,” says Shapiro. “Friends drive up from Los Angeles. We have drinks and watch the sunset, and we enjoy dinner on the terrace with a big fire on cool evenings.” The villa is so polished, so perfectly at home on this site that it’s hard to imagine Shapiro’s land originally included a roofless, windowless tumbledown shack in a tangle of vines. After acquiring the 40x200-foot lot, he devised a way to build on the footprint of the extant dwelling. “I loved that I’d be starting from scratch, creating whatever I wanted,” Shapiro explains. “Tall hedges and bougainvillea disguised the neighboring houses so nothing would intrude on my concept.” For many years, his extensive travels throughout Europe in search of antiques and inspiration included visiting and exploring historic châteaux and Renaissance villas. He admired the patina of age on palaces in Sicily and wanted to replicate that sweet, ruined ambiance. Shapiro added a new guest suite at the back of the house, and in the process crafted a sunny courtyard with an old stone fountain and the graphic punch of bright turquoise and white Moroccan floor tiles set in a zig-zag pattern. Bougainvillea spills over the crenellated walls, and clipped box spheres in terra cotta pots jostle with rain-washed Provençal troughs and an elegant, attenuated urn. The sea air and sibilant surf sounds complete the age-old Sicilian atmosphere. formulations, an update on past consistencies, which consumers have long avoided for their thickness and chalkiness. Here’s what we know: Ingredients in chemical sunscreens such as oxybenzone and benzophenone seep into the skin, absorbing UVB rays and UV light. Physical sunscreens—commonly called mineral sunscreens—with ingredients titanium dioxide or zinc oxide sit on the skin’s surface, deflecting UV radiation. “Chemicals like the oxybenzone and benzophenone penetrate the skin and when the ultraviolet light hits [them], it creates free radicals, which can be carcinogenic, says Stuart H. Kaplan, a Beverly Hills dermatologist who recently re-launched his eponymous mineral SPF in glass bottles so they are also BPA-free. “Physical sunscreens are the safest and most effective—they’re just more difficult and expensive to make cosmetically elegant.

Soleil Organique, which debuted at Ron Robinson this past spring, and the skincare line Willa have emerged to glam up this side of the sunscreen market with both clear and tinted makeup-friendly formulas. “I’m horrified when I see parents slathering their children with chemical sunscreens, mistakenly thinking they are protecting them,â€? says Christy Prunier, founder of Willa, which was inspired by her 12-year-old daughter Willa Doss. “They’re toxic, and research suggests they can cause hormonal disruption,â€? she adds, referring to a toxicity study by Dr. Amy Taub, a former product development consultant. West Hollywood skincare expert Gina MarĂ also urges her clients (Heidi Klum and Marcia Cross, for starters) to opt for titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. “A major reason consumers have stayed away from mineral blends is because of their white, pasty consistency,â€? says MarĂ. “But with the recent advanced science, the new formulas are genius. Hyde Park’s iconic hotel has earned a well-deserved following of celebrities and diplomats alike with rooms appointed in traditional floral decor and a host of superb amenities—like the “Rose Cocoonâ€? massage treatment that layers swaths of warm rose gel, oil and cream into your skin. beneath the undergrowth for centuries on this remote bluff,â€? says Shapiro. “I planned the interiors to look old, too. I’ve always been attracted to antiquity and want to live in another time.â€? Most brilliantly, Shapiro, a longtime collector of high-profile contemporary art, juxtaposed his antiques and taupe sandstone slab floors (cut into 16-inch squares with edges chipped off for patina) against the crisp cubist outlines of linen-covered L’Aventura by Studiolo chairs in the living room. A sinuous, modern steel stairway balustrade crafted by metal artist Glenn Fischer and designed by Shapiro curves past the ceiling beams. After more than 18 months of painstaking construction, Shapiro has created a dream life for himself. At Broad Beach, his perfect morning begins with an early walk on the sand, admiring sculptural rocks unearthed by the tide and spying cormorants and herons overhead. “On a summer day, friends arrive, and lunch lingers on until the evening,â€? he says. “We sit outside listening to the waves; the moon rises; constellations are bright. “The first time I witnessed Mavericks in person was on April 1, 1994, says big-wave rider and former editor of Surfer magazine Evan Slater. “I drove up from San Diego during a massive, late-season swell, paddled out and all the descriptions paled in comparison to what I saw. This was a wave like none other. When you get that first view from the channel of the most intimidating peak in the world, you immediately know whether you were destined to surf the place...or not. Slater’s recent paean to epic breaks, Swell (Chronicle Books, $30), explains what makes these natural wonders— from Northern to Southern Hemispheres, Indian to Atlantic Oceans—simply heaven sent.
