ig Sur. The mere mention of it transports you to a place of unending beauty. I have been going up to Big Sur for the past 15 years. It has been my refuge to relax and recharge—the time of year I most look forward to. Even in my off months, all I have to do is think about Big Sur, and my body unwinds. Most people know the area by the long and winding Highway 1. Hours can pass (praying you don’t get stuck behind a camper!) as you meander your way.

Those unfamiliar with the town will drive right through it. Big Sur is a spot made up of a few public establishments, and most unfolds off of the highway…behind rusted gates. I have been surprised by the chic, talented and well-traveled people who have never visited, even though they have lived in California their whole lives. It’s about time. It is a place that MUST be experienced. And, for that reason, we decided to create our first special issue. Here, we dedicate our entire feature well to the world of Big Sur. There are so many stories to tell; I wish we had endless pages. The perfect team to take on the challenge of getting off the beaten track: famed

photographer Lisa Eisner and talented writer Cat Doran. Over the past year, they’ve trekked up the coast more than eight times to create this amazing portfolio. We go inside houses and enter gardens that have never before been shot; we venture with cover subject Kate Bosworth (who stars in the upcoming movie Big Sur, directed by her fiancé Michael Polish) deep into the forest to show off the season’s best styles; we visit Rosanna Arquette and her daughter, Zoe Sidel, who have had a getaway in the area for decades. We cover historic legends, too, including a couple who lived off the land and created one of the most breathtaking abodes we’ve ever seen—building everything in it themselves. I can’t stress enough the power and the pull this stretch of Central Coast has to your spirit. It is worth the drive. Just put down the windows, let the sea air in, let the sun shine down on your face, and for goodness’ sake, crank up the music for a journey

Lisa Eisner “The first time I really experienced Big Sur was in 1996 for an Isaac Mizrahi ad campaign featuring Cindy Crawford,” recalls photographer Lisa Eisner, who headed back to the area for C’s Collector’s Issue. From Scratch “We need to consider what we may be losing in our perpetual quest for convenience,” star chef Thomas Keller writes in the Puff Pastry & Croissants section of his new Bouchon Bakery cookbook. Secrets from his famed Yountville and Beverly Hills ovens include delectable recipes for English muffins, cookies, pretzels, demi-baguettes, sticky buns, cakes and tarts. Inconvenient…but deliciously rewarding.

espite collaborations with Instagram’s Kevin Systrom, Path’s Dave Morin, Dropbox’s Drew Houston and Asana’s Dustin Moskovitz, designer Lauren Geremia is more interested in modernizing S.F.’s Victorians than exploring the future of cloud computing. “I’m not very tech savvy,” the Emeryville-based interiors expert confesses. “Obviously, my clients are.” A RISD alum, Geremia moved to the Bay Area upon graduation. “I knew I would never leave the east coast if I didn’t do it then,” she says. The painter parlayed her fine arts education into a new career and founded her eponymous firm at the age of 23. “My company is made up of opportunities for my friends to make stuff,” she says. Under her direction, a network of artisans has put its stamp on S.F. bars and restaurants (Umami and Churchill), private residences (the Palo Alto abodes of several Facebook staffers) and dot-com offices (you name it—plus, coming soon, YouSendIt) using a proven formula: “It always starts with art installations,” explains Geremia, who commissions 75% of the furniture she uses from scratch. The 30-year-old’s big break was the 90,000-square-foot Dropbox office, completed last April, but she approaches smaller projects with the same thoughtfulness: a Hillsborough residence’s custom glass lighting was painstakingly “crackled” to mirror the adjacent tree bark wallpaper; the ceiling at local bar Bloodhound was emblazoned with scattering birds, intended to appear “as though someone shot a rifle after one too many drinks.” Instagram’s South Park office also takes Systrom’s interests to heart with a menagerie of vintage cameras, an antique medicine cabinet to display the office scotch supply, and carved California Redwood chairs for a dose of NorCal spirit. “No detail is overlooked, and her choices never feel one-dimensionally visual,” says Systrom. Indeed, behind every project—and currently she’s juggling 23, including the office for Skype cofounder Janus Friis’s digital music service Rdio—is intentionality. “I don’t go to Jonathan Adler and buy tchotchkes. I’m not into excess stuff,” she asserts. “I’ll throw my own baby pictures out.” geremiadesign.com. •

he’s the digital empress of clean, monochromatic styling, so it came as no surprise when Guess? Inc. approached Elin Kling to design and model the Guess by Marciano fall capsule collection. The Swedish-born blogger (Style by Kling) and fashion director of the Euro pub Styleby immediately got to work. Leafing through the L.A. label’s campaign archives, she found her muse in a 1987 ad featuring a sultry señorita and matador crew in Seville. “I love how she perceived the [line],” says CEO Paul Marciano, referring to the modern separates, oversized chunky knits with chevron detailing, and body-conscious cropped tops and skirts. $60-$900; marciano.com. •

ince David Webb launched his jewelry line in 1948, the late designer’s multi-stone collars and colorful double-headed animal bangles have garnered the enduring admiration of the world’s most sartorially significant ladies—Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Princess Grace of Monaco and Diana Vreeland among them. (One enthusiast reportedly even requested to have her ashes sprinkled in front of Webb’s 57th Street boutique in Manhattan.) What was formerly cloistered inside the Beverly Wilshire Hotel has gone grand; Mark Emanuel, Sima Ghadamian and Robert Sadian, who bought the company in 2010 (35 years after Webb’s passing), tapped L.A. architect Hamid Gabbay to construct a two-story boutique. Here, a museum-worthy wall of original sketches (some of the ornaments owned by Doris Duke and Elizabeth Taylor), and leather-bound fashion portfolios of vintage Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar cover shots, are second only to a private viewing area housing the jeweler’s classic ’60s and ’70s collections (the Crystal and Zebra lines). “It’s the first time that we’ve had a true ‘curb’ presence in Beverly Hills,” says Emanuel. “We’re looking forward to being able to present, in full view, our beautiful [pieces] in all [their] boldness, color and form.” 9621 Brighton Way, B.H., 310-858-8006; davidwebb.com°ÊU

Being diagnosed with breast cancer changed the way I view everything, especially my health. With foods, skincare and the cleaning products I buy, my “FBCâ€? (f-bomb breast cancer) diagnosis was a huge wake-up call to pay close attention to the ingredients I use on a daily basis. Unfortunately, many beauty products contain loads of known carcinogens that, when used repeatedly, can wreak havoc on even the strongest immune system. The silver lining is that I don’t need to compromise on quality when making conscious choices anymore! There are many brilliant, forwardthinking companies producing topquality formulations that nourish and clean my skin while keeping the icky stuff at bay. One amazing resource I use to ďŹ nd them is the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Cosmetics Database (ewg.org). This free site allows you to search items by name, then identiďŹ es the ingredients and rates their toxicity. You’d be surprised what’s in your makeup bag! hen an A-list actress enlisted interior and fashion designer Kelly Wearstler to make over her four-level Seal Beach escape in an organic, natural palette, Wearstler ditched her trademark bright hues. It’s still 100% Wearstler, though. “That house has color!” she muses. “Beautiful sand tones, rusts, shell pinks, moonstone grays…” This ability to see rainbows where others might see neutrals shaped the project, an imaginatively modernist “dialogue with the sea” in which marine metaphors abound: Shaggy 1960s Italian mohair chairs— “Like little birds standing on the sand.” Chrysanthemum root from Hong Kong—“Driftwood.” A resin 1970s zodiac sculpture above the guest bed—“A starfish.” A two-story, 17-foot carved ceramic fireplace by local artist Stan Bitters commands the living room, which, like the rest of the house, is skinned in warm, honey-colored wood paneling. “You feel like you are on a boat,” says Wearstler, “or the set of a James Bond film.” Touches of vintage glamour punctuate the 3,500-square-foot-space, from a 1960s Italian brass-and-gunmetal chandelier to a set of Warren Platner chairs. Completed last January, the residence is featured in this month’s new book, Rhapsody: Kelly Wearstler (Rizzoli, $55), which testifies to the Beverly Hills-based decorator’s ongoing romance with Old Hollywood (and the starry client base that goes with it). But Wearstler, who has just shown new spring clothing and accessories collections, and fall wallpapers for Lee Jofa Groundworks, suspects that her popularity may have something to do with the ready-for-my-close-up factor she builds in: “Lighting is crucial,” she reveals. “I want my clients to look and feel beautiful in their homes.” kellywearstler.com. •

ll arrows point to Rachel Craven. At least, the hand-blocked symbols on her line of home textiles seem to say so. “My father was a minimalist painter,” explains the fine artist, “so I was exposed to all those people as a kid. What I am drawn to are circles and arrows and dots and crosses. I also love the work of Richard Tuttle and Agnes Martin. I am a fan of that graphic, minimal world.” Her understated designs imbue that simple, raw appeal. For a year now, the wispy blonde has been working from her headquarters in Echo Park’s Victorian-era enclave of Angelino Heights. In her latest line, runners, placemats and napkins are handstitched in rose-gold thread and dyed in indigo or flaxen tones, then printed. Look closely, and the shimmering prints display flecks of turquoise. This past summer, friend, tastemaker and admirer Shiva Rose hosted a dinner to show off Craven’s latest wares. Admittedly obsessed with the intersection of art and entertaining, Craven said, “Let’s invite a great group of women who are making stuff.” (Clare Vivier handbags, Joanna Williams accessories, Beatrice Valenzuela sandals—hardly “stuff.”) On a subsequent summer evening, a table stood deep in Rose’s Rustic Canyon landscape. A Circles Arrows and Dots runner contrasted currant arrangements by Moon Canyon Design Co., and curved-handle Japanese shears encouraged guests to hunt for blooms amid the gardenista’s incredible spread. The group joined for a gorgeous vegetarian menu by über-cool caterer Danielle Steckler of Paper Palate. Family-style courses included purple kale and plums piled with soft ricotta clouds on pale blue platters by Heath, one of Craven’s earliest supporters in her whirlwind year of design. apa Valley bursts into a golden blaze each October with the heady, intoxicating, baked-bread-andfresh-grape-juice smells of fermentation. It’s a time of excitement and intuition, as resident viticulturists defer to their sixth sense when harvesting those sacred grapes. At Calistoga Ranch, guests can partake in the

glories by pruning, picking and crushing. The 140-acre property, studded with ancient oaks and redwoods, has its own private vineyard, helmed by Kirk Venge and Sotero Vigil. oved by the forceful beauty of his surroundings, Charles Fine arranges the bounty from his extensive travels in large glass vitrines. Once housed, these ceremonial objects, seedpods, bone awls and tools are reborn on canvas, in photographs and as sculptures—always charged with meaning. C’s Editor-at-Large Kendall Conrad, a longtime friend and fellow artisan, interviews the maestro of the metaphysical about his retrospective at ACE Gallery in Los Angeles (Sept. 28-Dec. 29). How has your life and artwork changed in the 20 years we’ve known each other? Things have been pretty consistent. It’s still about integrating life— what you take in and where your interests lie—and translating that into, hopefully, compelling artworks. I’ve had the same studio, although it has grown larger, and a progression of working methods and materials has led me to new ways of realizing the thoughts I’ve been exploring over the past 30 years. I’ve also continued my travels to Mexico, which began in the late ’60s and has had an important place in my art-making process. I’m still returning regularly to a foundry just outside Mexico City to cast my bronzes. Tell me about your exhibition. The show will be wide-ranging in that it will have pieces dating back to 1980, some of which are the

beginning drawings and paintings that set the course for subsequent work. Many were last shown at the Newport Harbor Art Museum in 1986. It will also include sculpture, photography, video and paintings from the ’80s to the present. What will be the essential concerns of this survey? You’ve used the perfect word: essential. I’ve tried to focus on basic, essential aspects of the life cycle, and then put these into a visual context. Living structures, recycling, memory and loss are all underpinnings for my pieces. What do you most relish about being an artist? It’s intriguing to witness as paintings and sculptures come into being. I enjoy working with my hands; as the process unfolds, time becomes far less relevant, which is an inviting place to go to. I also appreciate taking in physical culture and how it is preserved. Art-making through the ages, which is so accessible to us at settings around the world, be it indoors or out, has been a large part of my life and it’s nice to be making work that is part of this continuum. or a creator like Carin Gerard, a limited palette of black, white, gray and umber offers endless possibilities to translate the gifts of nature. In her latest solo exhibition (Oct. 6-Nov. 3 at S.C.A.P.E.), “Organic Origins,” the Montecito-based painter has re-imagined flowers, seashells and butterflies in subdued hues using a near-monochromatic technique called grisaille (rooted in gris, the French word for gray). With detailing worthy of classical realism, the works also have a relief effect—a sculptural quality that makes objects on canvas feel tangible. “I focused on the intricate, subtle beauty of contrast,” says Gerard. Highlights and shadows of leaves, wings and shells become dramatic, volumetric forms. The project forced her to return to the fundamentals of her training in Italy, where she studied under Charles H. Cecil at his famed Florentine atelier and lived in a 19th-century Chianti farmhouse. Gerard revisited the essence of chiaroscuro—the thrill of opposition. “I have to be able to read color values, and read them well, to create the dynamic interplay of dark and light,” she says. Using precise objects in her studio, pretty is never her goal; she strives for sensual, powerful and unexpected. “My hope is that people will first see the pop of the image, then slow down to interpret its drama.” Southern California Art Projects & Exhibitions, 2859 East Coast Hwy., Corona del Mar; scapesite.com; caringerard.com.

n one of our first trips for this issue, an artist quoted a local saying that she attributed to author Henry Miller: “Big Sur either sucks you in or spits you out.” I could find no evidence that Mr. Miller ever said this, but it stuck with us the deeper we dug into this place and as we met the people tough enough to make a go of it here. Big Sur is not easy living. It is accessible by one road—the gorgeous Highway 1—that threatens to fall right into the Pacific Ocean with each act of nature. Even the true notion of exactly where this heralded enclave begins and ends seems hard to pin down—roughly 90 miles of coast from southern San Simeon to Carmel at the northern reaches. It is not a town. There is no village green or logical meeting spot, no high school, no grocery store, no true focal point; sometimes, there are no addresses. What does exist: a jagged showcase of the elements as they clash and conspire; a slice of California not for the faint of heart. • By cat doran PhotograPhed By lisa eisner

The company has been successful due in no small part to the efforts on Bosworth’s part to promote it. She makes herself available in terms of design decisions; and is a tireless advocate of the brand. She and Polish make a short each month highlighting something new about the collection. Recently, they traveled to Korea, and before that, they filmed in downtown Los Angeles, Coachella, Paris and Morocco. Big Sur will always have special meaning for the welltraveled couple. Polish likens it to a kind of no-man’s land between the mountains and the sea that can “shoulder a lot of emotion for people who choose to surrender there.” Perhaps the next time they visit, it will be to exchange I dos. •

dialogue is word-for-word from the book, not a normal cadence— no grammar, no start and stop to sentences. It felt a little Shakespearean in the way I had to figure out how to make it accessible.” It’s the kind of character of which Bosworth has always dreamed. She fell into acting because of her love of horses (growing up in Connecticut and Massachusetts, she was a competitive show jumper), landing her first role in Robert Redford’s The Horse Whisperer at 14. As the lead in Blue Crush, she not only learned to surf—she’d never even been on a board—she also became skilled enough to navigate the North Shore of Hawaii, a place where the waves are as high as buildings. For his part, Polish wanted to adapt the novel because it felt the most autobiographical of Kerouac’s works. He had also spent time “running around central California” as a teenager growing up in NorCal—Big Sur was the most dramatic of the places he knew. And, having filmed Northfork in 2003 in the middle of a Montana winter (on the high plains north of Glacier Park), Polish was able to enlist several of the same crew members to ease the burden. But, as he’s quick to point out, “Big Sur was its own beast. And it definitely tamed us animals.” Together, the couple has spanned the globe for Bosworth’s pet project, JewelMint, a online membership-based club she started in 2010 with longtime friend and stylist Cher Coulter.

don’t find Big Sur particularly relaxing. I find it confronting. A place where things end and things begin. It is provoking. It demands your attention,” explains actress Kate Bosworth. She would know, having spent many recent months along Highway 1 to film an adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s Big Sur, directed by her now-fiancé, Michael Polish. “I was living there and playing this character who is on the edge herself, and then we were literally on the edge, driving that winding road every day from Carmel to Big Sur. I kept having all of these moments where I would sort of leave the ground and feel suspended. And for an actor, those are really the moments you’re chasing,” she says. Indeed, it was a life-changing experience for Bosworth; news just broke of the 29-year-old’s engagement to 41-year-old Polish. “Michael and I had such an effortless artistic relationship. I felt this joy that I had found a director I wanted to continue to work with. I am so blessed. I have my best friend and my lover—but also my mentor.” Artistic synergy was required for Bosworth’s intimidating portrayal of Billie, a woman living in limbo between the uptight 1950s and the free-swinging ’60s. She struggles as a protofeminist who’s on the verge of personal discovery, yet she’s still reliant on men to help her in this transformation. Bosworth says, “The women of the Beat Generation were often the sober observers of a very un-sober time, so they had a pretty interesting perspective on everything. I thought Billie was a true reflection of that because she was shared between two men [Jack Kerouac, played by Jean-Marc Barr; Neal Cassady, played by Josh Lucas], and she was completely fine with it.” The film—due out next year—was shot on location, in the same canyon, near Bixby Bridge, where Kerouac lived. With efforts to keep the historical details accurate, Polish was fortunate enough to consult with Magnus Toren, executive director of the Henry Miller Memorial Library, Beat poet Michael McClure, and even Lawrence Ferlinghetti, the artist who owned the cabin where Kerouac stayed during his time in the Sur. “I thought it was incredibly ambitious to translate Kerouac cinematically, but I was also quite terrified of the role. Memorial Temple in San Francisco; the project sustained them through most of the 1950s and funded their ever-morphing house. Clement worked as an atomic engineer. Together, they could realize whatever they wanted. They built the entire house by hand. Original ideas to construct a big house on top of Mt. Clemile were put aside in favor of a smaller structure which they just kept expanding. Clement became ill in the 1960s with stomach cancer, and rather than casting a pall over their lives, his illness spurred them on creatively. The two were baroque music lovers, especially Bach. Clement was a keyboard player, and they had always wanted a pipe organ. His declining health gave them a deadline to complete the instrument, which Norman designed and Clement engineered. The born entertainers had people for dinner two or three times weekly—right in the middle of all their big endeavors (including the organ). Following Clement’s passing in 1973, Norman remained up on the hill, making and showing his art until his death at age 91 in 2009. Jeff Mallory, longtime friend and caretaker during Norman’s later years, describes their lives: “They worked like maniacs, and they played like maniacs.” •

ike many others who went to Big Sur in the first decade after the highway was completed, Emile Norman and Brooks Clement were just passing through on their way somewhere else. The duo had left Whittier in 1946 because it was “getting too crowded” and were en route to Mendocino. They stopped in Big Sur, saw a sign saying “land for sale” and figured, what was the harm in looking? They fell in love with the place and never left. After spending a couple of quick years on the initial piece of property by the roadside that they bought, the pair befriended Florence Pfeiffer, a member of the family whose name adorns many landmarks in the area. She sold the couple her late husband’s 120-acre timber claim high atop Pfeiffer Ridge, with famous words of wisdom: “If you stay down here at the river, you’ll get mold in your crotch.” Norman made a living as an artist who specialized in plastics and epoxy resin. He had large commissions, including the mosaic window and exterior sculpture at the California Masonic

ifteen years ago, Art Luna made a decision that would shift the course of his life. The legendary hairstylist was deciding between a salon on Rodeo Drive and one with a courtyard in West Hollywood. He chose the latter and set about transforming the exterior into a lush haven for his patrons. Not content as a weekend gardener, Luna went looking for more inspiration. He took a fortuitous trip to Lotusland in Santa Barbara that catapulted his hobby. Traveling to Europe as much as he could for research, he would return home and adapt his findings to the courtyard space. Eventually, Luna moved his salon to Main Street in Santa Monica (where he re-planted the garden). As clients watched the changes over time, they began to ask Luna for help with their own terrain. Two years ago, he was invited by friends to help landscape their oceanfront property in Big Sur. From the moment he turned into the driveway toward the sea, he felt a connection. “It’s a modest, well-designed, simple house made of teak that grays out into the landscape,” Luna practically bubbles with excitement when describing it. “When you arrive, you’re not going to pick out one element to focus on. You’re just going to think it’s the most beautiful property. And it’s loved. It’s really a well-loved piece of land.” Luna insists that all he has done is edit a few things—replacing arbitrary growths with solid drifts of a single plant—like the feathery Stipa that borders the walkway to the beach, and the Oriental fountain grass in front of the upper deck. The effect makes the swath appear more consistent. Above all, he made sure that nothing was so jarring that it interfered with the ocean view. Most houses in Big Sur sit high enough up on the cliff to command a Pacific vista. Here is one of the few places where you’re right on top of the water, and it changes your relationship to the ocean. “I know this probably sounds crazy, but if you wait and listen, the land speaks to you and before you know it, you’re doing what it tells you to instead of what you think you should do.” •

ver since Rosanna Arquette can remember, she wanted a house in Big Sur. In the mid-’80s, when she was gaining ground as a top actress, she headed to the Sur to try to make this dream a reality. “I walked through the gate and could see mountains and ocean, and that was just it. I said, ‘I’ll do Rambo V. I have to have this house.’” Luckily, she didn’t have to get that deep into the sequel rigmarole, and shortly after seeing the property, she booked a film that afforded her the charming spot. She has been coming here ever since, whether for long stretches of time or just for a quick weekend. She spent many nights in the house when she was pregnant with Zoe Sidel, now an 18-year-old high-school student in Los Angeles. In the footsteps of Arquette’s father, Lewis; grandfather Cliff; and four siblings (Richmond, Patricia, Alexis and David, all thespians), daughter Sidel continues in the family business (next, a Gia Coppola project). Decompressing from the industry for both women is and will always be key. The main house, with its light, bright open floor plan, welcomes seclusion. Two other structures complete the acreage: a separate guesthouse and a tiny meditation house that is rumored to have hosted the Dalai Lama during a three-month retreat in the 1970s. Arquette and Sidel use the place as their own personal retreat center— seeking solitude as soon as they arrive. Some of Sidel’s earliest memories reside in the house and at the Gazebo preschool down the road at Esalen. Upon each return, Arquette finds the place just a little different. “The elements don’t want man to stay here,” she says. “It’s like it’s constantly evolving. It’s not like it gets better or worse; it just changes, and that makes it even more magical.” •

ome time around 1944, Orson Welles and Rita Hayworth were selling war bonds for the U.S. Government. Everything, including petrol, was rationed. The stars were paid for their efforts with gasoline coupons, which they cashed in to drive down the California coast from San Francisco to Los Angeles. They got out of the car in Big Sur, looking for a picnic setting; instead, they spotted a cabin. Falling in love with its idyll, the couple bought it to use as a private retreat from the Hollywood madness. When they arrived back in Tinseltown, real life intruded on their Big Sur fantasy. Folklore has Hayworth making curtains for the cabin windows and receiving a cable from Welles sending his regrets;

she threw the drapes in the fireplace and never returned. Shortly after this, Lynda Sargent took residence in the log house. The novelist invited a destitute Henry Miller to share the cabin. The two reportedly did not get along but spent their days in front of dueling typewriters that could be heard from the highway. In 1947, Bill and Lolly Fassett purchased the property from Welles and Hayworth. The deal took two years; it was impossible to pin down both members of the estranged pair at the same time. The Fassetts decided to build a restaurant as a way to support themselves and raise their family. They moved with their five small children and began to plan the terrace and restaurant cONTINuEd ON PAGE 144

rik Seniska likes to call himself the EyE. The moniker refers to his supreme ability to seek out the one object, plant or rock (depending on whether he’s in a junk shop, a nursery or at the beach) that will, when given the right amount of love and repurposing, become a crown jewel—wherever it settles. Seniska grew up in Florida and, after studying graphic arts at Florida State University, moved first to Boston, then to New York during the ’80s and ’90s. He headed west, to San Francisco, where he lived for four years. As a working artist, he met architect Mary Ann Schicketanz (of Carver + Schicketanz) at a show house where he had displayed some decorative painting. The two hit it off, and Seniska won his first large commission doing his combed paint technique on a ceiling in a large Big Sur home of Schicketanz’s design. Soon employed full-time at Carver + Schicketanz and living in Big Sur, Seniska was introduced to a couple from Silicon Valley. They’d purchased a distinctive piece of property—two plots, actually: one with a small house (designed by the area’s most famous architect, Mickey Meunnig) overlooking the ocean close to Garrapata State Beach, on the northern reaches toward Carmel; the other, an entire hillside with little ramshackle buildings dotting the ridge. The owners first asked the artist to direct the landscaping around the oceanfront property. In a truly inspired moment, however, they told him he could do anything he wanted to the structures along the ridge. Of his client, Seniska says, “She is like the Peggy Guggenheim of tramp art.” This is most apparent in the abandoned hunting cabin (tagged Fish Fry by its former owner), where Seniska lived alone for nine months, laboring on his masterpiece, high atop a virtually impassable dirt road. Seniska painted the interior and exterior, and he tricked it all out with his repurposed art: Everything from the knobs on the cabinets to the living room chairs to the picture frames in the bedroom were handmade by Seniska using treasures accumulated as he hunted. He describes the process with equal parts drama and reverie: “It was blisteringly hot up there. I was basically camping out. I’d work on the west side of the house in the morning, and as the sun moved, so did I. The pattern on the outside is based on a West African motif that I saw painted on the sides of mud huts.” Every inch of Fish Fry, the meditation construct and ammo-shack has Seniska’s touch. The complex was gutted with some help from local contractors, and details—like the corrugated metal trim—were added, but the bones themselves weren’t changed. The combed and pattern painted surfaces, the horizontal patchwork wood walls, and the feeling of being in an adult playhouse all make Fish Fry the perfect spot for his clients to “get away” from the more rugged elements by the beach. The EyE definitely likes to design with a wink. •

A message left by a traveler at Esalen.

I

ndeed, there are some notably familiar stops along the winding, 90-mile stretch of Big Sur: Post Ranch Inn, which finds chic in its austerity; the rustic polish of counterpart Ventana Inn & Spa across the road; the almost Lilliputian Deetjen’s Inn; and the breathtakingly situated restaurant Nepenthe. These are the places everyone knows and visits on a drive down this craggy coastline. But people really do live in Big Sur and have resided among the Redwoods ever since 1937 (when the highway was built). It was constructed in large part by convict labor and completed after 18 years. The list of celebrated individuals who have spent time in the Sur reads like a countercultural who’s who. Henry Miller wrote his book Big Sur and the Oranges of Hieronymus Bosch while living here. Jack Kerouac passed through and later penned the novel Big Sur. Lawrence Ferlinghetti had a cabin deep in the woods. The irreverent Hunter S. Thompson was a night guard at the Esalen Institute baths. Speaking of Esalen, the magical place at the southern end of Big Sur has hosted everyone from Timothy Leary to Ken Kesey, Ansel Adams, Buckminster Fuller, Carlos Castaneda, Joseph Campbell, Aldous Huxley and B.F. Skinner. The Institute is not only known for its clothing-optional hot springs, which are built right into cliffs that hang

over the Pacific Ocean, but it is also the birthplace of Gestalt Therapy and offers some 500 workshops a year in fields as varied as tantric philosophy, Esalen massage and painting. After a couple of failed attempts to unearth anything more soulful than the standard tourist fare, we were fortunate to befriend Mike Gilson, co-owner of the Big Sur Bakery and Restaurant. At this de facto local meeting spot, the food is sensational, and you can actually pick up a cell signal. Gilson introduced us to amazing chefs, artists, architects, farmers and baristas. Disillusioned with corporate life or perhaps cashing out from it, these residents make fantasies of becoming an artisanal cheesemaker seem really romantic. We met an architect who was there doing exactly that. We also met a jade carver, an aura painter, a jewelry designer whose medium is animal skeletons she finds around her property, and some organic farmers chasing an offbeat American ideal: the simple life. Any telling of life in Big Sur would be incomplete without a mention of the Henry Miller Memorial Library and what goes on there. Executive Director Magnus Toren has created an ongoing series of events that runs each summer, including outdoor film screenings and live performances by bands like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Arcade Fire, Flaming Lips, and Neil Young. (Oh, and the venue holds about 300 people.) Imagine sitting under the stars and watching the Philip Glass Orchestra perform the original score to Bela Lugosi’s Dracula. The simple life apparently has a few fancy perks. •

structure that would become synonymous with life in the Sur. The Fassett kin grew up in the family business: working in the dining room, digging ditches, contributing to the handmade feel of the place—all under the observant eye of Lolly, who often called down to offer up

advice or admonishments. Any restaurant that can operate continuously for 65 years is incredible. That Nepenthe has done so under a single family is one of those things that could only happen in Big Sur because of its remarkable ability to resist change. As time passes, the log cabin has overflown with the fruits of their labor; the entire extended Fassett clan also has an artistic streak. Erin Lee Gafill, who lives in

My husband and I spent new Year’s eve 2011 in Anderson canyon with our good friends Mark Fletcher and tobias Meyer. the next day, we hiked to Andrew Molera State Park, through this giant meadow dotted with tents where surfers were staying. It is a dream campground—so close to the ocean with really spectacular views. the trail takes you down by the big Sur river and then out onto a bluff overlooking the shore. It’s a voyeur’s paradise with something to see for everyone: birds, whales, otters and surfers. I liked the solitude of this surfer heading out into the cold, green-gray water for his first waves of the year.
