In 1839, Vacheron Constantin created the famous pantograph, a mechanical device allowing for principal watchmaking components to be reproduced with total precision. Elevating the quality of its timepieces even further, this invention, which also revolutionized Swiss watchmaking, would propel the brand into the future.

roundbreakers…you gotta love them. They’re the guys who start their travels without a map and find their journeys along the way. Not afraid of rules or being told “you can’t do it,” they do it anyway. Those are our kind of people! We want to know them; heck, we even want to be them. In this fall issue of C for Men, we profile individuals making their mark, one passionate idea at a time.

Starting with John Krasinski, the beloved television and film actor is now ready for the big-big

leagues. Wrapping up “The Office” after nine seasons, he has co-written and stars in a movie along with co-writer Matt Damon, directed by Gus Van Sant (a bit reminiscent of Oscar-winning Good Will Hunting?). Not out until December, Promised Land is already getting Oscar buzz. And we are thrilled to present Krasinski in his new leading-man style, wearing the best of men’s fall fashion. Elon Musk. The name alone defines groundbreaker. He has been one of the top innovators of the electric automobile since 2003, and Tesla shipped its first Roadster back in 2008. So, how does he follow that up? With space travel, but of course! It is Musk’s mission to make the outer limits as accessible as the automobile. And if the final frontier isn’t yet on your itinerary, why not check out his newest venture, a luxury electric car in the $50,000 range…asking car owners to think twice about their German-engineered cars. If your thing is sticking a little closer to home, than why not indulge your love of the beach in our portfolio “The Point.” The collection was 16 years in the making by photographer Lyndie Benson. She has truly captured the essence of her neighborhood. (That her seaside hamlet happens to be one of the best surf spots in California didn’t hurt the project.) While Point Dume, in North Malibu, is world-famous for its breaks, its residents and surfers make the place that much more illustrious. Case in point: Rob Lowe grew up on the Point in the ’70s, with neighbors such as Sean Penn, Charlie Sheen and Emilio Estevez in the water alongside him. We showcase his essay digging up youth culture with an inside glimpse of P.C.H.’s hallowed area. From new aviator shades to throwing the coolest tailgating parties, from cutting-edge auto design to taking those rides on “James Bond Style” adventures throughout California, we have you up-to-date on tips and trends that will keep you in the loop. That is C for Men; we want to edit the best-of-the-best for you in one publication. That way, you have more time to focus on living

Spitfire Chronograph. Ref. 3878: Back in the days of the dogfights, there was no technology to do the flying for you. A pilot who wanted to get the most out of his Spitfire needed to have an eye on every detail. The same goes today for an IWC Spitfire Chronograph, incidentally: the big central seconds hand together with the day and date displays and the propeller-inspired hour and minute hands are all within the pilot’s field of vision. And that could hardly be more appealing. Here, the well-heeled silver foxes gab breezily, proudly displaying their trophies for all to see— both the four-wheeled and silicone-enhanced varieties. This is a place, after all, where a couple bought a one-off Pebble Beach edition Rolls-Royce Aviator on the spot for a half-million dollars. A small price to pay, it seems, for Avalon. or those making their virginal pilgrimage to the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, as was the case for me this past August, expect nothing short of automotive heaven. The hallowed grounds of motoring are a self-contained bubble high above the mundane realities of the recession-hit pedestrian—like a misty, Alfa Romeo-lined Avalon conjured by Thurston Howell III. Since its 1950 debut, the Concours d’Elegance has steadily grown from an insular coterie of car collectors gathering at a small PaciďŹ c golf course into something not unlike Coachella for the G6 set. Every day, from Thursday until its Sunday afternoon climax, Pebble Beach and its environs are home to a growing list of niche events: a dinner prepared by Thomas Keller, hosted by Vacheron Constantin; a round of golf on the legendary course; and the historic Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion car races in Laguna Seca on Saturday. There, one can watch exorbitantly priced antique cars race each other in loud ďŹ ts on the track. It’s a bizarre schadenfreude to witness a multi-millionaire crash his 1927 Bugatti 35C into a wall—the guilty delight of watching the equivalent of your child’s college fund burst in an explosion of hubris. However, the titular Concours d’Elegance remains the gem on the gilded crown of Pebble Beach. In lavish suites, marquee automakers like Bentley and McLaren ply their former and future clients with magnums of Krug and owing waves of freshly shucked oysters. They honor them with sneak previews

cross the international divide, Byung hun Lee is known as one of the key players of the “Korea Boom” and one of the “Four Kings in Japan.” Throngs of starcrossed, teary-eyed admirers follow his every move—the Tom Cruise of the Pacific Rim, if you will. Born and raised in Seoul (his sister, Eun hee Lee, was crowned Miss Korea in ’96), Lee picked up acting in his early twenties—first in Korean television dramas; later, national blockbusters as South Korea began producing and distributing top-notch reels to foreign film festivals (I Come with the Rain; The Good, the Bad, the Weird; I Saw the Devil). “My martial arts background is in Tae Kwon Do, so I have a good base to work from,” says Lee. “The hardest stunt sequence was for a movie called A Bittersweet Life. It was an escape scene that took about two weeks. In the middle of winter, I had to be totally wet for the whole thing.” Lee does his own stunts (“if physically possible”). The star made his U.S. debut with G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra in 2009 after learning English from some American friends (he’s been spotted attending LACMA galas and red-carpet affairs with Eva and Michael Chow). With an IQ of 155, an unflappable calm from his Buddhist upbringing, and a love for action sports, he has a universal appeal (he’s also dating the stunning Korean star Min jung Lee). The mark of a true Angeleno is one’s first car, and he has picked up a Bentley GT for his month-long stints at the Beverly Wilshire. (Most recently, he made his handprint at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, the first Korean to do so.) Currently, Lee’s in pre-production for Red 2 in London and Montreal—all before next spring’s release of G.I. Joe: Retaliation, co-starring Bruce Willis and Channing Tatum as an elite team of U.S. special forces protecting the world from the apocalypse. Just your average Joe. •

The quest for precision

The “Grande Maison”

In 1833, antoine leCoultre, a young blacksmith fascinated by precision mechanics, founded a small watchmaking workshop in a remote valley of the Swiss Jura. He tirelessly designed and produced tools and instruments dedicated to improving the precision of timepieces. Step by step, he acquired the competencies required to make complete movements. In 1866, he inaugurated the first horological Manufacture in the Vallée de Joux: an establishment bringing together in one place the full range of skills indispensable to creating a wide array of calibres ranging from the simplest mechanisms to the most refined complications.

almost 180 years of research and development have enabled the Grande Maison to file 400 patents and to create 1,231 mechanical movements – an absolute record within the watch industry. Many of them are equipped with the most prestigious complications involving impressive feats of production: over 200 repeater striking mechanisms, chronographs and perpetual calendars, as well as the smallest movement and the thinnest calibre in the world. a watchmaking icon, the reverso invented in 1931 at the request of polo players in India has left an indelible imprint on scientific and technological history. 80 years on, it has become a genuine cult watch. In 2004, Jaeger-leCoultre caused a sensation by unveiling the Gyrotourbillon. By gravitating on two axes in order to free the timepiece from the effects of gravity, this revolutionary spherical tourbillon has pushed the limits of precision to a whole new level.

real watches for real connoisseurs The Manufacture brings together more than 180 aspects of watchmaking know-how, all under one roof, ranging from the rarest manual skills to state-of-the-art technologies. This integration allows Jaeger-leCoultre to craft truly exceptional timepieces from the smallest pinion to the most complicated components. Meticulous care is devoted to making them and 95% of the operations are consistently performed by hand. each model is equipped with a calibre specially designed to ensure the closest possible fit with the shape of the case. In order to meet this requirement, Jaeger-leCoultre currently produces more than 60 manually-wound or automatic calibres, from ultra-thin movements to Grande Complication versions. The Manufacture is dedicated to preserving horological traditions and to perpetuating the rarest forms of hand craftsmanship. Its gem-setters, engravers and enamellers transform watches into genuine works of art. Before leaving the Manufacture, each finished timepiece must meet the stringent quality criteria imposed by the 1000 Hours Control. for over six weeks, this extremely tough battery of tests verifies in real-life conditions the precision, the reliability, the resistance to water and to shocks, and the smooth functional operation of the complications. It has thus become a unique signature feature of the Grande Maison in the VallĂŠe de Joux.

egardless of which passion came first, acting or racing, it was Steve McQueen’s bad-boy style that completed his appeal. Nowhere was this more apparent than on the late actor’s wrist. A bluefaced Heuer (pre-Tag) “Monaco” Calibre chronograph withstood punishing laps in cult film Le Mans (1971); a Gruen Precision kept time in Sam Peckinpah’s hit The Getaway (1972); and he made waves in his own Rolex Submariner Reference. Persol-shaded, Triumphriding fans continue to revel in his aura: In 2009, that Rolex fetched $234,000 on the block, and the iconic Monaco, estimated at $300,000, sold in July’s Profiles In History “Hollywood Auction” for $799,500.

t summer’s Le Mans 24, the hype surrounded an outlier so far beyond technical boundaries that it couldn’t win—even if it were to win. The V4 Nissan DeltaWing was a 1,050-pound waif that barely drank fuel and rendered competitors zaftig by comparison. Other than MSRP, 2013 cars are slimming. Some have gone on extreme diets, like the hulking Range Rover, which lost 926 pounds (thanks to its new aluminum chassis). Others are reducing their footprint, like electric eco-luxury pioneer Fisker, which has tapped BMW to provide engines for next-

generation models. With gas around four bucks a gallon, the race is on: Who can create gorgeous automobiles that are lighter and more intelligent? The $280,000 AM 310 Vanquish coupe proves how classics never go out. Aston Martin has made an exra-wicked silhouette with carbon paneling to lighten the V12 load; 565 horsepower; and improved gas economy. Likewise, Bentley’s Continental GT Speed—its latest agship—offers pedigreed grace with reductions in CO2 emissions. A FlexFuel component means the it runs on gas, bioethanol, or both. >>

<< But sensible seems downright ridiculous for power-hungry supercars zooming 0-60 in 2.6 seconds—and convertibles, to boot. Yet, Bugatti’s Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse (a cool $2.5 million) is the fastest production roadster, well, ever; and it’s still light as air with titanium, carbon, magnesium, and aluminum welded into crash-smart construction that tops 255mph (shutting off at 233 for mortals). Liftoff might be imminent save for its tires—about $42,000/set—which actually explode beyond 250mph. British bespoke maker McLaren has also capitalized on carbon technology in the MP4-12C Spider. With a V8 twin-turbo engine, the 12C adds just 88 pounds and loses only 3 mph max speed versus its Retractable Hard Top version. Oh, and custom-ďŹ t luggage makes the $268,250 price tag somewhat more palatable. McLaren’s Special Operations division unveiled a one-off X-1 at this year’s Pebble Beach Concours. Referencing grand pianos, Jaeger-LeCoultre Art Deco clocks and images of Audrey Hepburn, designers spent three years with foam (not digital) models to build a million-dollar riff on the MP4-12C’s platform. Lead designer Hong Yeo says it “glides like a superhero’s cape.â€? Brains and brawn? Check. And the X-1 real-life Batmobile is probably as close to a yĂžÂˆÂ˜}ĂŠV>Ă€oĂƒÂœĂŠv>Ă€°ĂŠU

ay Area designer Will Wick sees things through a Savile Row lens: “I like to build interiors to look like a suit,” the 40-year-old says, referencing a library he revamped for a private residence: “I used a gray flannel sofa, pillows made out of shirting material, a leather desk—‘the shoes.’” Considering his sartorial inclinations, it’s not surprising the man at the helm of Wick Design Group made his solo debut at the 2004 Decorator Showcase with a spotlightstealing, 1920s-inspired “gentleman’s closet”—a project he describes as “cleaned-up Ralph Lauren-y.” Since then, Wick has opened his own Potrero Hill antiques shop. Battersea stocks everything from Eames chairs to vintage French pharmacy jars to tribal masks. He has mastered a look of sophisticated masculinity— steering clear of the man-cave norm. “The cliché, which is hard for a lot of men to hear, is the big chair with the ottoman and the 60-inch television,” Wick says. “You can do it, but it can be dangerous,” he adds. The Medlock Ames tasting room in Alexander Valley offers an example of Wick’s bold take on simple. Farm store rusticity blends with industrial Americana in the centuryold former grocery, where triple-hung windows showcase verdant wine-country landscaping. The adjoining bar has “a speakeasy vibe—without it being like every other lounge in San Francisco,” Wick says. A communal factory table with swivel seats sourced from a Pennsylvania salvage shop anchors the space, while a smattering of curios—including a taxidermy Mallard and folk art banjos crafted from cigar boxes—accent a tin ceiling and Victorian-style banquettes. Having recently put the finishing touches on his first private plane commission (“Paul Smith meets Giorgio Armani”), Wick is hard at work on a Swiss chalet-inspired Montana ski getaway. Next, he’ll outfit a 40-foot Airstream as a company’s mobile office, complete with barn walls and a farm table set with Mid-century Modern chairs. Just don’t expect to find Wick’s taste faithfully mirrored in his own home. There, decor is left to his wife and director of brand styling for Restoration Hardware, Jennifer Kelly, who might nudge things in a more maximalist direction. “I walked into her daughter’s bedroom and there were, like, 50 snow globes on her shelf,” Wick relates with mock horror. “I went, ‘What the hell is going on here?’ But now I understand what she was doing with that—and I love it.” wickdesigngroup.com. •

menu << “If you do try making one of the dishes and it’s a disaster don’t blame me. Or my publisher. Blame yourself. Just kidding. But not really.â€? This caveat emptor, in Todd Selby’s chicken-scratch, adorns the back page of Edible Selby, sequel to The Selby is in Your Place. His new book could be considered an “accidental gourmandâ€? extension of the magazine column he created with then-T: The New York Times Style Magazine editor Sally Singer. “I knew her from when she was at Vogue,â€? he explains. “I’d ďŹ nished my ďŹ rst book, and it had done very well. I wanted to expand, and I told her my idea to move into the food world.â€? The California native has tracked and inuenced trends, covering everyone from the Mast Brothers making micro-lot chocolates in Brooklyn to visits with gastronomy’s tweezer-wielding class. In this new volume (complete with magnets for your fridge), each artisan’s chapter includes a Proustian questionnaire—asking him or her to draw diagrams, give quick tips and secrets— all in the subject’s own handwriting. Recipes might be given to the quarterteaspoon or left open to interpretation. But what is The Selby? In 2008, Todd Selby began a portfolio of tastemakers captured in their daily lives. This updated cinema veritĂŠ for gypsetters offered (and still does) whimsical sneak-peeks in photo, video and watercolor, and it kept users scrolling their mice, ad inďŹ nitum, on his addicting website, theselby.com. Technically, Edible Selby would be his third book; ďŹ rst was an edition of 250 devoted to his 2009 collaboration with concept boutique Colette in Paris.) Abrams quickly translated his aesthetic to print in 2010 with The Selby is in Your Place. Selby insists, it’s not so much about photography of curing rooms so appealing you can almost smell the gustatory layaway. “Take IĂąaki [Aizpitarte of Le Chateaubriand and Le Dauphin]; there are so many articles about him. A more fun thing is to show CONTINUED ON PAGE 120 his house and his personality. There’s a lot more underneath.â€?

HALF TIME Want to watch, as opposed to hearing, the game from the kitchen? “Get as much prep done beforehand so you only have to assemble the dish,â€? advises Beverly Hills caterer Chris Brugler (chrisbruglercatering.com). One of his signatures is a crème de cassis-braised short rib, served on toasty challah slices. Dispatch from Bouchon’s after-hours dinner Overlooking a banquet table of medieval proportions, a y on the wall would notice that chefs don’t let chefs go hungry: Ad Hoc fried chicken, shellacked ribs, buttery corn on the cob, bacon-studded cheddar biscuits draped in gravy, macaroni gratin, cones ďŹ lled with pencil-thin frites. The linen tablescape, to wit, looks like Roscoe’s House of Chicken and Wafes re-imagined for Michelin inspectors. “For one chef to come in, the kitchen gets really excited. This is special to have so many,â€? says Rory Herrmann, chef de cuisine at Bouchon Bistro in Beverly Hills. “It’s not like in New York, where you all go and drink and eat at the same bars afterward. Here, we’re all so spread out.â€? Herrmann’s second-annual industry feast for his pals fell on the Monday following Los Angeles Food and Wine weekend, when a mass of food luminaries were still in town. No chef could leave his respective post early, so a late night was about to get later. 9:30, 10:00 p.m. Ari Rosenson (Cut), Tetsu Yahagi (Spago) and Neal Fraser (BLD, Strand House) sip cocktails at Bouchon Bistro’s demi-lune bar, working on an icy display of lobster, oysters, shrimp and crab. eep in Santa Barbara County’s Santa Rita Hills, Rajat Parr has fallen in love. Where names such as Cold Heaven, Dragonette Cellars, Foxen, Foley, Sea Smoke and Sweeney Canyon strike cool-climate gold, you’ll ďŹ nd the source for Sandhi, now entering its fourth vintage. Says star chef Michael Mina of his longtime wine director: “His palate is unlike any other, and he has earned immense respect from his colleagues as a trained chef, winemaker, mentor, author and sommelier.â€? Having worked on projects with “big brotherâ€? Jim Clendenen of Au Bon Climat, and created scant quantities of syrah with Steve Beckmen of Beckmen Vineyards, Parr had his a-ha moment: “I came to realize that to make the wine you love, you gotta make it yourself. By make, I don’t mean blending the wine; I mean all the decisions.â€? One such decision was the partnership itself: Terroir Capital’s Charles Banks (previous co-owner of Screaming Eagle and Jonata) and winemaker Sashi Moorman. (Sandhi is Sanskrit for collaboration.) After previous vintages (Oregon, Anderson Valley, even closer in Santa Barbara County with Bien Nacido Vineyard), Parr narrowed his focus to Santa Rita Hills appellation—and now, one speciďŹ c road. Moorman works to express the suave character of pinots from Evening Land’s Tempest, and old-vine Sanford & Benedict, and the higher-acid, wild-yeast fermented Rita’s Crown and Bentrock chardonnays. Says Parr, “It’s old, new-world wines from the past—just with more precision, more civility and balance, not all about fruit and ripeness and oak.â€? Boutique as production may be—approximately 90% of supply goes to restaurants—Sandhi is making big moves. Excitement turns to the historic Inn at Mattei’s Tavern in Los Olivos, where a tasting room will open this autumn. The tireless 40-year-old commutes between Santa Barbara and San Francisco two to four times a month; spends harvest, of course, in S.B.; attends events related to his James Beard Award-winning book (Secrets of the Sommeliers, 2011) in the margins—all while keeping a vigilant eye on 20 restaurants. As for his future with Santa Rosa Road: “That should keep me busy for the next 20 years.â€? sandhiwines.com°ĂŠU

SAN FRANCISCO BAY It’s a good thing Max Zorin didn’t destroy Silicon Valley in his quest to corner the market on microchips, or the James Bond series would have detonated along the San Andreas Fault in A View To a Kill (1985). Instead, watch Roger Moore race through San Francisco in a “borrowed” Renault 11 Taxi, dressed as if he stopped at Wilkes Bashford en route to City Hall. Careening toward the Transamerica Pyramid, he’s pitted against Zorin (Christopher Walken), hanging onto the Golden Gate Bridge. Today, that “killer view” is perhaps enjoyed best on the water and not dangling above it. While the America’s Cup regattas add international intrigue this month, find your own speed with architect Zaha Hadid’s fiberglass Z Boat—a limited-edition of 12. Simply put, it’s villainous. zaha-hadid.com. PALM SPRINGS When John Lautner sat down at the drafting table to mastermind the high-in-the-sky Elrod House in 1968, it’s unlikely he consciously allotted space in the sunken living room for hand-tohand combat with bikini-clad babes named Bambi and Thumper. But, as Sean Connery would discover at the manse featured in Diamonds Are Forever (1971), there was ample room to be thrown, tuxedo and all, into the sparkling pool. The Elrod hovers in the elite realm of architectural landmarks. Buffs who can’t wait for tours and lectures on the subject at the annual Modernism Week Palm Springs (Feb. 14-24, 2013) can sign on for a four-day preview, DOCOMOMO, this Oct. 5-8. modernismweek.com. BAJA The best parts of Timothy Dalton’s License to Kill (1989): Benicio Del Toro as a young assassin and an 18-wheeler chase scene on Mexico’s Federal Highway 2. Even without the threat of combustion, the most haunting drive of your life could well be the serpentine La Rumorosa. In the Sierra de Juárez, between desert and sea, it’s a steep, east-west stretch connecting Tecate and Mexicali—a place where the cosmic balance of the “Curva Peligrosa” is the Tacos Lalo stand. For 13 miles of unadulterated bliss and terror chiseled out of whispering landscape, skeletons of chassis sit by the side of the road. Let’s just hope it won’t be your DB5. •

There are certain celebrities who are always at the Chateau Marmont. Actor John Krasinski is definitely one of them. The hostess knows his favorite table—a circular five-top in the rear of the courtyard, by the bar—but today, a large group is celebrating a birthday, so we settle on a couch. When the waiter takes his order of decaf coffee, Krasinski converses with him as if he’s an old drinking buddy, admiring his tucked-in tie, a particularly new addition to his wardrobe. And when Krasinski heads home—he and wife Emily Blunt currently live near the hotel—the maître d’ validates his parking ticket with a humorous signature he has formulated especially for the strapping six-foot-three, 32-year-old Brown University graduate who has grown bored of the standard stamp. Should it come as a surprise that Krasinski, one of the most amiable characters on television, has turned this typically austere, unfriendly and intimidating hotel into a real-life version of “Cheers”? We have grown to know him, mostly, in our living rooms as Jim Halpert, the immensely likable paper salesman on “The Office” for the past eight seasons. (A ninth and final season began earlier this fall.) Jim is the adorable everyman of this NBC comedy—an underdog we’ve rooted for, since the BBC spin-off hit the airwaves as a midseason replacement in 2005. It was the New Englander’s first major professional job following two post-collegiate years waiting tables at New York joints like Sushi Samba and The Odeon, and what ensued is something he still considers a kind of overnight success. “My entire career began and has lived through this show,” Krasinski says, after a day at “The Office” set in Van Nuys. “Any movies I’ve made”—and there have been several: George Clooney’s Leatherheads; It’s Complicated with Meryl Streep; Away We Go, directed by Sam Mendes—“have happened because of it. But I’ve never wanted to leave or run away from it. At no point did I ever say, ‘I’m bored. I need something better than this.’ We all wanted to protect it and be there at the end.” The series finale doesn’t come as a relief. “It’s incredibly sad,” he says. “For us, it’s the end of a family. It’s such a great job.”

Now he certainly has ample time to focus on his film career—both in front of and, most recently, behind the camera. This December 28, Focus Features releases Promised Land, a Gus Van Sant film from Krasinski’s first original screenplay, an idea he developed with S.F. novelist Dave Eggers (A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius) and co-wrote with actor Matt Damon. By the film’s opening date, some armchair bettors are already placing it in the Oscars race. Other clues: The film co-stars Frances McDormand and Hal Holbrook, a supporting cast the budding director calls both “surreal” and “pretty phenomenal.” “I wanted to tell a story about American identity,” he says of the flick, a contemporary local hero tale in which a naturalgas salesman (Damon) tries to win over a rural Northeastern town in hopes of drilling there. “It’s probably one of the things I’m most proud of that I’ve done in this business.” While other actors aspire to superhero movies—something that Krasinski, who auditioned for the role of Captain America, says he won’t rule out since “I’m willing to try anything”— it also means taking a big risk. “It’s this weird precipice,” he explains. “This is my shot to take a chance at who I want to be, to say to the industry, ‘This is what I want to do.’” This isn’t the talent’s first go behind the camera. He previously directed an adaptation of stories by the late David Foster Wallace, though he asserts, “That was about wanting people to hear those words. I mostly quoted from him.” The experience of Promised Land, he adds, is more about when “You jump off a cliff, land in the water, and you look up, and you’re still there.” Naturally, Krasinski has started working on another screenplay, but he won’t elaborate. The end of “The Office” also means more time with his wife. The actress has spent the two years of their courtship and two of marriage traveling. Krasinski, meanwhile, has been landlocked in L.A. due to his television show’s shooting schedule. When Blunt is off somewhere far flung, the couple arranges a visit every few weeks. For him, sticking in Hollywood has “made it easier, I don’t think it’s all that awesome to be the one to leave,” he says. CONTINuEd ON pAGE 120 And then there’s the subject of

rom aerial vistas of the glinting Pacific to up-close shots of “the locals” (see model/ volleyball great Gabrielle Reece), photographer Lyndie Benson offers an insider view of storied Malibu surf enclave Point Dume in her new photo book The Point. Sixteen years in the making, Benson’s pictorial began organically when the L.A. native endeavored to document her sons’ childhoods—marked by sunrise dips in the sea and twilight bonfires. The film developed into a love letter to the idyllic coastal promontory where her family resides. “It’s meant to capture an essence of the place,” explains Benson, who was mentored by the late Herb Ritts after being introduced by friend Cindy Crawford. “[Malibu] is epic and magical and tricky to pin down; it’s casual and down-home—and yet, we have a Nobu on the beach.” Actor Rob Lowe’s recollections (excerpted below), and thoughts from surf legend Laird Hamilton and noted environmentalist Kelly Meyer complete this vicarious glimpse at the quotidian of those who live on the bluff set on the northern end of the Santa Monica Bay. It’s a neighborhood where you might run into Bob Dylan at the park and an early morning surf session could have you sharing oceanic real estate with Kelly Slater. Adds Benson, “Eventually, you meet everybody in the water.”

for “kooks,” “spastics” and people from the San Fernando Valley.) Surfing was an absolute requirement. If you did not know how to surf (and imagine my expertise coming from the Midwest), you could count on losing every girlfriend you had to someone who did. Starlettes and “stalker-razzis” had not yet turned Malibu into an ongoing photo shoot for US Weekly, so back then, the locals and celebrities had each other’s backs. If your school room was stormed by a legendary rock star’s estranged wife’s bodyguards, you simply helped the teacher hide the kid in a closet until the divorce lawyers and cops arrived. Our summer vacations were epic. There were endless, perfect, cookie-cutter days of sun and spear fishing. We snorkeled off Big Dume looking for the rumored sunken Indian village. We wandered through the trails and canyons, building forts. We rode bareback to the market and tied our horses to the community hitching post. Adventure was everywhere, and we felt safe to seek it out. The Point, then, was populated by working-class families, teachers, firefighters and maybe an architect or doctor. Sure, there were a few actors but they were mostly the type you would see on “The Six Million Dollar Man” as a guest villain (although I once saw Steve McQueen, grubby and barefoot at the Point Dume market, buying a lot of beer; when a little boy asked for his autograph he said, “I ain’t anyone famous, kid”). It was a very simple, unsophisticated time. If a new album came out, it would take weeks for it to make its way to Euphoria Records, our lone record shop, where I am sure most of its surfed-out staff was indeed “euphoric” 99% of the time. It would also take months for any new movie to make it to the Malibu Cinema, where I worked for a summer before being fired for talking to girls and threading the projector backwards. Then, and now, the Point had a loving, loyal brand of community. During the great fires, I can remember neighbors rescuing horses and spraying each others roofs as flames threatened to jump the Pacific Coast Highway. Every home was evacuated to Westward Beach and we stood united, in the ash and light of the flames. When mudslides closed the only roads in or out, we hunkered down, cut off from the world and enjoyed the adrenaline rush of knowing that we were part of an absolutely unique way of life and that to live on the Point, was to live on the edge. •

FOREWORD BY ROB LOWE I remember the day “Charlie’s Angels” came to our elementary school on Point Dume. My friends and I rushed down to see Farrah Fawcett and company as they slinked in and out of our principal’s office, remade Hollywoodstyle into an emergency room. Every self-respecting boy had the famous Farrah poster in that fall of 1977, and her appearance caused an uproar. Having moved to Point Dume from Dayton, Ohio, during our bicentennial summer previously, I had come to understand that the Point was a place where the abnormal was normal, and the lifestyle and code one lived by was both unique and beautiful, if highly specific. Long pants were not tolerated. (God help you if you showed up wearing Toughskins at the first day of seventh grade. In Ohio, those pants were de rigueur; on the Point, they were banishment to that special place in teen purgatory reserved

D HIS TOYS LAUNCHING SPACESHIPS TO MARS, ELECTRIC ROADSTERS AND THE MODEL T OF THE FUTURE, ELON MUSK IS ON TOP OF THE WORLD—LITERALLY

I

BY NICOLAS STECHER

t’s ďŹ tting that Elon Musk’s most famous appearance came at a party in the blockbuster Iron Man 2, where he shakes the hand of Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark and suggests rather enthusiastically, “I’ve got an idea for an electric jet.â€? First off, there’s much buzz about how Musk was an inspiration for Stark’s character—a ridiculous speculation, considering Musk was probably reading about Tony Stark’s playboy billionaire antics in pajamas as a child. No, what’s ďŹ tting is the 41-year-old’s brazen and ludicrous speculation for an electric jetliner—something that is easily decades away. The thing is, when a statement comes out of Elon Musk’s mouth, it almost has to be taken seriously. When you think about it, there is something superhero-esque about the South African entrepreneur. For years, he has been uttering outlandish statements as facts, widely panned by many experts. And for years, he has been making those “expertsâ€? eat their words.

Consider this: At an already weathered 12 years of age, Musk sold his first commercial software program. He went on to make his (first) fortune as the largest stakeholder of PayPal, selling the company to eBay for $1.5 billion. He then founded SpaceX, a rocket ship company built with the explicit purpose of—get this—“extending mankind to other planets.” Sound far-fetched? On May 25, SpaceX made the quantum leap of being the first privately developed spacecraft to dock at the International Space Station, earning the company a $1.6 billion government contract. “The successful docking of the Space Station would be one of the top experiences of my lifetime. Probably bigger than the sale of PayPal,” Musk says with relief. After a pause, he continues on to make one of his grand Muskian proclamations: “It really cements the sense that SpaceX is going to be around for the long term and, ultimately, hopefully get it to the point where we can take people to Mars.” Sure, why not. At around the same time, Musk launched another major venture with similarly fantastic goals—one greeted with perhaps even more skepticism. In 2003, he invested in and co-founded a fledgling electric car company, intent on taking its powertrain from the garage into full production. Keep in mind: This was the era of the dubbed-out Hummer, when the mere idea of an electric car would be a punchline for most auto manufacturers. Yet, by 2008, Tesla Motor’s first car, a Lotus-based two-seater called the Roadster, was in production. While most major auto manufacturers scoffed at the viability of a tech-funded upstart like Tesla, the company grew and collected some of the most valuable investors in Silicon Valley. They have now delivered almost 2,500 of the tiny speedsters in 31 countries, retiring the Roadster last year to concentrate full focus on Tesla’s real coming-out party: the Model S. While the niche Roadster was a tire-melting proof of concept, with a 0-60 mph time in 3.7 seconds and a $107,000 price tag, the Model S aims to be for Tesla what the Model T was to Ford: its bread and butter. A luxury sedan coming in at under $50,000 aimed straight at those carrying a BMW, Audi or Benz keychain. And what a car it is. Having driven both the Roadster and Model S, it is clear Tesla is not just trying to make a great electric car—they’re trying to make a great car. Period. The styling of the Model S is impressive, its large rear haunches and aggressive styling not flinching a centimeter to the German four-doors in its crosshairs. The inside interface is centered around a massive 17-inch touchscreen equipped with the same intuitive playability as an iPad. Want to open the expansive sunroof? Flick your wrist. Change the sonic focus of the sound system? Move the target over the cabin icon with your finger. Increase the air conditioning. Play Slacker, the onboard, Pandora-like app. Or simply enjoy the car’s basic amenities: the plush 8-way leather seats and ample trunk space (since there’s no engine, there’s a trunk in the front and the back). Seat seven people comfortably (the rear two passengers facing backward in seats that unfold from the trunk). continued on page 120 Need power? Just press the pedal—

rom Alexandra and Michael Misczynski’s master bedroom balcony in the Hollywood Hills, you can just make out the corner of Chateau Marmont’s penthouse suite. Having witnessed countless parties there over the years (and unmentionables), the iconic setting is where the couple decided to throw a bash for their first book, Interiors | Atelier AM (Rizzoli, $55), out now. Michael admits, “We are not big partiers, but we figured, why not? We can walk home.” The pair met 15 years ago when collaborating on the decor of a client’s apartment in N.Y. (Michael was working for Rose Tarlow; Alex, under the late Naomi Leff). A few years later, the Misczynskis relocated to Michael’s native SoCal (Alex grew up in Bedford, N.Y.) to start a business and a family— Miles, 7, and Henry, 4. “In the beginning, it was about finding our strong points and finding an appreciation for each other’s aesthetic. Now, it sounds crazy, but we are pretty in sync,” says Alex. The pages reflect this compatible style that Michael simply describes as “honest.” In 2008, a client from Chicago asked the pair to take on an existing Mediterranean in North San Diego County’s Rancho Santa Fe neighborhood. Averting the district’s “tough design review boards,” they completely stripped the house. Initial drawings, rife with Provençal details, traditional carvings and reclaimed wood moldings, were reinvigorated with a surge of modern contrasts: In came Han Dynasty vases to juxtapose French blonde barre limestone floors, a Louis XIV fireplace, a Contemporary abstract painting by Mark Bradford, custom cashmere lounge chairs—and not a patterned textile in sight. Their deliberate placements hinge on this interplay between the rustic and the refined, the new and the antiquated. “You could buy the best furniture in the world, and it would still be a crummy house if there wasn’t light or volume,” says Michael, who, after all, honed his craft in the office of superstar architect Richard Meier (L.A.’s Getty Center). Their modus operandi is never to distract from the structure’s integrity—and the absence of gimmicks and superfluous trimmings lends an uncontrived richness and a genuine spirit. In his essay for the book, noted design editor Mayer Rus cites Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in describing the Misczynski vernacular: “The music is not in the notes, but in the silence between them.” •

In one photo, see the king of bistronomy, scruffy, cigarette in hand, sitting on a color blocked quilt in his son’s playroom. Adjacent, find his pristine raw scallop dish with black truffles and a dust of mushroom powder. “The vast majority of the work,” Selby continues, “is in the research on my feet, talking and meeting and checking [the space] out. This is pretty much how they are, not cleaned up or styled.” While his travels span Mallorcan hideouts, Japanese highlands and bespoke kangaroo-leather shoemaker-cafe hybrids in Australia, the photographer reserves a soft spot—and a chunk of pages—for his home state. Selby wasn’t always hunting down Pu-Erh tea importers in the backwoods of Lagunitas, though. As a child in Santa Ana, his sole adventures in food (other than taco trucks) were on far-flung family vacations. So, he relied on friends to pierce culinaria for this project. “Getting into that whole chef world was very much about having one food person introduce me to the next,” he explains. “What I was doing was not a straight-up profile. It was more in-depth and intimate.” Take the six degrees of Chez Panisse: From the dinners he shot for Alice Waters’ 40th anniversary, first, there was friend and Panisse alum Ignatio Mattos (Isa, N.Y.), and also S.F.’s Iso Rabins, a noted forager who introduced him to Chad Robertson from Tartine Bakery (author of the book’s introduction). Through Tartine, he met Russell Moore and Allison Hopelain of Camino in Oakland. They led him to nearby Japanese caterer Peko-Peko. Sylvan Brackett hooked him up with Kirk Lombard, a loner hunting urban waters—seriously, fishing in storm drains—for surf smelt and monkey-faced eels. Selby’s artistic independence has been funded by a string of cool corporate projects for the likes of Nike, Cole Haan and Hennessy; most recently, he wrapped a railway trip with Louis Vuitton. Then there’s Amsterdam, next heading to Seattle, maybe S.F., he thinks, Paris, Chile, India… But will he be trying his hand at

Peko-Peko’s pickled cherry blossoms? “First of all, I’m never home. Second of all, I’m pretty bad at cooking. Cooking is something I’ll do,” he adds dryly, “when I have time.” •

Michael Voltaggio (Ink.) is “running way late.” The Animal guys (Jon Shook and Vinnie Dotolo) are on the line. “They’re just slammed,” he reports. Carolynn Spence (Bar Marmont) and Ralph Johnson (The Pikey) join. 10:30 p.m. Ken Takayama (Mélisse) arrives to a back-slapping greeting. “450, man,” says Herrmann, referring to the number of covers served that night. 11:00 p.m. The group retires to the Escoffier room for an initial parade of warm epi-baguettes, shiny olives and potted terrines. Conversation turns to the city’s obscure Korean dives. Late diners depart. Jay-Z blares through on the speakers. “I can’t wait to see the reaction,” says head sommelier Alex Weil as a giant wooden checkerboard of charcuterie emerges (and subsequently returns, bare). There’s raucous laughter, klatschy gossip and iPhone flashes. 1:00 a.m. By the wee hours, banana splits, vanilla bread pudding and baba rhum cakes have arrived. The playlist navigates hip-hop, Radiohead and Death Cab for Cutie. Chefs applaud an exhausted kitchen staff. The attendees would be equally exhausted the next morning—a regular Tuesday of placing orders, doing payroll. Ho-hum. The good news? Next year’s feast is only a year away. Bouchon, 235 N. family. “Yeah, definitely at some point we want to have kids, but I don’t think we’re necessarily rushing into it,” he says.

“We’ve only been married for two years, and we’ve had a blast.” Typically self-deprecating about his relationship, early on, Blunt asked him to go to a screening of The Queen Victoria with her, in which she played the name on the marquee. “To date someone for three weeks and then see that movie,” he recalls, “You’re like, ‘Boy, I wonder who she’s going to date starting tomorrow…because it sure as shit isn’t going to be me.’” While he might not be dark, he’s certainly tall and handsome. And add industrious to that list of positive qualities while you’re at it. Being in the driver’s seat in Hollywood, says Krasinski, is “definitely more work, but obviously you have more control along the way. I know that I can’t just say I’m going to direct tomorrow. I have to do a lot more work before that needs to be done. But this was trying out a very new phase. I’m not trying to be a mogul anytime soon.” •

its electric motor supplies full torque at zero rpm. No engine or turbo to spool means 0-60 mph in just 4.4 seconds. That’s Porsche Panamera speed at the cost of owning a four-cylinder car. “Whenever there’s a new technology introduction, in any field, it tends to follow an S-curve. So in the beginning, the adoption is slow, then it starts to accelerate—like how it was at the beginning of the internet,” says Musk, lending evidence to why he thinks sales of the Model S could easily surpass his many doubters’ expectations. Then his voice changes. He switches from pedantic, soft-spoken CEO to bar-room gambler, a vocal swagger like a man who has had just the right amount of bourbon. “I’m highly confident that by 2030, more than half of all new cars made will be pure electric. If someone’s willing to make me a billion-dollar bet, well then I’m willing to take that bet. Of course, they better have the billion dollars to back it up!” Elon Musk is many things, but humble is not one. Neither is he dishonest. He is almost robotic in his sincerity; there’s an android-like quality to his thought process, a filter-less stream of information that is nearly indistinguishable between

data and prognostication. And there’s reason for confidence in his prophesies. If Tesla had not existed, the impetus for General Motors to make its Volt, and Nissan, its Leaf, may not have existed. Bob Lutz, former vice chairman of GM, admits as much. Now after a steady diet of doubt and doom, some of his detractors have become clients: Tesla will be supplying the powertrains and

So whether he’ll be playing superhero building the spaceships that carry mankind to the moon, or leading the vanguard into the American garage, the options are there, but don’t expect Musk to spend too much

Clark gable (1901-1960) and george allen “slim” aarons (1916-2006) were great friends, even before gable became a legendary hollywood actor and aarons became a famous hollywood photographer. in 1957, gable had agreed to star as lead of It Started in Naples. in the film, gable has just fallen in love with sophia loren but must return home to marry another girl. after the scene, gable walks over to aarons—who had been drinking with the dialogue coach—and gave him a few lines. one was: “The girls in naples? i don’t even drink the water here,” to which aarons could only deliver, “The girls in naples? i don’t even drink their water.” Back in Beverly hills, on new year’s eve in the Crown Room at Romanoff’s, gable couldn’t help but retell the story to Van heflin, gary Cooper and James stewart. aarons, of course, got the shot.
