In 1839, Vacheron Constantin created the famous pantograph, a mechanical device allowing for principal watchmaking components to be reproduced with total precision. Elevating the quality of its timepieces even further, this invention, which also revolutionized Swiss watchmaking, would propel the brand into the future.

Faithful to the history upon which its reputation is built, Vacheron Constantin endeavours to maintain, repair and restore all watches it has produced since its founding: a sign of excellence and confidence, which continues to elevate the brand’s name and stature.

founder’s letter

ith its myriad of festivities, winter can whirl by as if part of a dream. The invites pile up, the parties are nonstop, the shopping list seems unending (and let’s not forget about having to wrap all those presents). I love every second of the craziness…To manage it all, I try to make my gift lists

as soon as Halloween is over. I take the family portraits for the holiday card in November and have already picked my wrapping “theme” for the presents so they all coordinate under the tree. That said, the whirlwind is enough to make one need a vacation (hence so many fleeing at the end of December to recover)! In this issue, we want to lighten your load and give you a veritable “cheat sheet” for the season. Check out our editors’ chic gift picks that are sure to make it onto your list. Find Santa Barbara style setter/lifestyle blogger Carolyn Espley-Miller’s tips to decorate and

entertain with fresh California materials. For inspiration, read our dream-worthy features, full of the most decadent fashion, personalities and places. When thinking of indulgence, one might immediately envision an over-the-top party. Who better to call upon than San Francisco’s maestro of soirées? A world-class decorator to socials and Silicon Valley titans by trade, Ken Fulk doesn’t rest on those laurels. His clients rely on him to create out-of-this-world, price-is-no-object parties. Plus, the celebrations he hosts at his loft are just as legendary. Everyone who is everyone wants to be on the list. Speaking of lists, Emily Blunt is on Hollywood’s most-wanted short list. She started her career in indie art films and graduated to the A-list with her break-out role in The Devil Wears Prada. Film after film, this English beauty delivers—just as she does in our fashion shoot wearing the season’s best gala gowns. Although her style is signature, Dita Von Teese’s vintage look has been shaken up a bit in our fantasy portfolio. Picture the famed dark tressed burlesque star as a BLONDE (think the allure of Marilyn Monroe mixed with the full-on glam of winter’s opulent dresses). That she is a chameleon for our theatrical feature is apropos; she shows her range as she continues to extend her brand and become a serious businesswoman—all while remaining seriously sartorial. And perhaps most indicative of a reverie, we present the Havens’ haven on a hillside in Vista. The pièce de résistance at their health spa Cal-a-Vie? A home lovingly built after years of curation and collecting. A stay at their heavenly destination getaway was much needed, but when I saw their château and property, I was blown away. It is from another century—complete with a former French convent deconstructed and reconstructed—yet thoroughly modern. It got me day-dreaming about how I could take cues to incorporate into my own residence. From holiday gatherings to quiet time spent with family and friends,

Jennifer Hale Founder & editorial director

we hope your season is full of all things dream-worthy!

I’m happy that my wife either subscribes to or bought this issue of your magazine. “It is a place that must be experienced.” I quickly turned the pages, hoping to find what I truly consider the hidden gem of Big Sur, but, disappointed, I did not find it. The New Camaldoli Hermitage is a tiny turn off the Big Sur highway, just past Limekiln Park. Hidden up the winding, upward-bound road is a place of peace, quiet, reflection and majesty—a step into another world. If you missed it, then please consider to return and try to find it. Perhaps you did know about it and chose to keep it to yourself because of its preciousness. Your magazine is beautiful. I can’t help but think it would have been further enhanced by a mention of this incredible Hermitage and its monks, who are devoted to our world and yet stay on their mountaintop. H. Janklow

[In response to C Beauty, “Secrets of a (Not-So-Secret) Plastic Surgeon,” September 2012, p.132]: It is very important that you consult with your physician about the procedure that is right for you, and that may include longevity of the results, downtime and price, which is just one consideration in seeking cosmetic surgery. You should research the doctor. Not only that, although minimally invasive procedures may, often times, cost less, you will most likely need to repeat the procedure. Some simply do not work as well for certain corrections. Do your research, and check out all your options. Dr. branman

Start the year off right with a few tricks of the trade atural beauty expert Marie Veronique Nadeau recently opened her first retail boutique in Mill Valley. Here, Nadeau’s three at-home, post-holiday pointers to de-puff and detox: • To lighten dark circles, soak cotton balls in freshly-grated white potato and leave on the eyes for 10 minutes, which allows the skin-brightening enzyme catecholase to work its magic. • Diluted apple cider vinegar works Marie great as an astringent Veronique to manage breakouts. would like people to understand that they should not equate an absence of identifiable disease with good health,” explains Dr. Soram Singh Khalsa from his Beverly Hills clinic, where he employs 14 full-time staff. “What I’m interested in is that gray area in between.” Dr. Soram (as he prefers to be called) graduated from Yale University and Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, is board-certified in internal medicine and currently teaches at UCLA School of Medicine. He’s also a Sikh and wears the traditional long beard, white robe and Pagri. He describes his practice as integrative and is highly sought after for combining allopathy (prescribing modern drugs when necessary) with a number of complementary practices such as acupuncture, homeopathy and herbs for prevention and treatment of everything from Lupus to cancer. After failing to be properly diagnosed with chronic fatigue as a student, he began experimenting with his own therapies: vegetarianism, vitamin supplements (“a multi-vitamin was about the only thing available in Cleveland at the time”) and yoga. He traveled to California, where he became a devoted student of Yogi Bhajan (Sikh Dharma founder and figurehead of Kundalinistyle yoga in the U.S.). That was 30 years ago. If you’ve heard about chronic vitamin D deficiency and how it’s linked to maladies spanning osteoporosis to depression, you have Dr. Soram to thank. His book, The Vitamin D Revolution, drew attention to an overlooked and underdiagnosed condition that’s easily cured with simple, inexpensive supplements. “The average woman leaves the house with more than 130 chemicals on her body,” says Dr. Soram, which are then absorbed through the skin. In response, he recently launched a preconception/pregnancy program to help women clean heavy metals and harmful chemicals out of their systems before they pass it along to a developing fetus. “Babies are being born with Teflon and Scotchguard in their bodies. One in six children in America is born neuro-developmentally disabled. It’s all coming through the environmental toxicity levels.” Dr. Soram If a regimen of acupuncture, nutritional Singh Khalsa supplements and herbal medicines sounds too rigorous, Dr. Soram has some guidelines to minimize your risk of chronic degenerative

disease: Keep your Body Mass Index under 25, exercise 30 minutes daily (or 3.5 hours weekly), minimize meat consumption, avoid smoking, and find some kind of “grounding” practice for mental health (like yoga or meditation). “Doing those simple things will lower risk factors for all kinds of chronic disease, like stroke, cancer, heart disease and diabetes. And that’s not just me talking.” Khalsa Medical Clinic, 436 N. Bedford Dr., B.H., 310-274-6200; khalsamedical.com°ÊU

arolyn Espley-Miller’s white-shingled Montecito house, built in 1895, begs for the “more is more” style of seasonal embellishment. And she obliges, beginning the first week of December, with a beribboned garland of nuts and pine cones on the front door, and a 12-foot tree, which she spends several days decorating for family, houseguests and get-togethers ranging from a tea-and-champagne afternoon to an evening cocktail party. >>

A festive table set with tartan.

1

Run with a theme—natural materials or jewels, say—and throw in an unexpected element. If you’re using burlap and kraft paper, mix in something sparkly.

2

Think “scent, scent, scent,” with warm cider on the stove, and slices of dried oranges on the tree or in a bowl.

3 << The Santa Barbara style-setter and designer chronicles the display on her blog, SlimPaley.com, an addictive potpourri of fashion, design and travel. “We have a collection of old and vintage ornaments,” says Carolyn Espley-Miller, who lives with her husband and two sons (when Espley-Miller they’re home from college). She also attaches flicker-flame bulbs and freshly dried orange slices to the tree, all of which look like bits of stained glass when illuminated from behind. “The citrus is a signature of mine. They make the house smell amazing,” she adds. She turns the mantelpiece into a kind of aviary with branches, decorative birds, delicate nests and a blown-glass dome that encloses petite eggs. And candles. Lots of candles. “I’ll swag the staircase with fresh pine garlands,” she says, “and wire green apples or pears into clusters” at the base. To suggest Christmas in a forest glade, she’ll fill a low basket with moss and bark and layer fresh mushrooms, or she might use a tartan tablecloth to dress a dining table. Last year, she took slips of paper printed with good wishes and tied them to the tree. Some ornaments are always part of the decor, though, like Espley-Miller’s favorite ruby slippers—suggesting, perhaps, that during the `>ÞÃ]ÊÌ iÀiÊÀi> ÞÊ ÃÊ Ê« >ViÊ iÊ i°ÊUÊ

Californians are lucky to have fruit and vegetables in December. Go to your garden or your farmers’ market for a fresh, organic addition to your decorations.

4

Focus on a single color, but use different materials for variety.

5

Toast the holidays with a signature drink. [Last year, she poured marshmallow martinis.] The libation should be decadent. After all, your New Year’s diet is only days away!

Her 1895 house begs for the “more is more” style of holiday embellishment.

eyond a discrete entrance at The Century—one of Century City’s architectural towers—neoteric chef David Myers imbues Southeast Asian styles with of-the-moment local flavors. His recent travels translate onto the plate: willow-smoked and marinated tuna with grape seaweed; green papaya and mint soup; miso-aged cream cheese. (And talk about strategic: Related—the company that linked Thomas Keller’s lauded Per Se and N.Y.’s Time Warner Center—is behind the project.) The name of this urbane study in brass and wood? Hinoki & The Bird, a fitting moniker for a dining destination where culinary enthusiasts will flock. davidmyersgroup.com. •

P

erhaps you recognize his portraits by Andy Warhol, David Hockney or Helmut Newton, and those unmistakable round lenses. That’s Michael Chow—aka Mr. Chow: restaurateur and celebrity, design visionary, businessman, husband to art and fashion force Eva Chun Chow, and father to actress China, artist Maximillian and college student Asia. His restaurants have been defining places for the cool, beginning with London, 1968, and Beverly Hills, 1974. Savvy to the landscape of power lunches and curbside paparazzi, Chow has selected only the most exclusive venues: two in New York; the W Miami Beach (positively hopping this month at Art Basel); and a future home in Las Vegas. In December, Malibu Country Mart, a high-end retail and dining complex, joins the clique with a whiteon-white outpost. This new locale promises the same version of cosmopolitan Chinese/ Cantonese fare like hand-pulled noodles and gambei with “goodies.” Edible gold still garnishes the shumai—a golden-rule reminder about this establishment: The diner—royalty or not—is king. 3835 Cross Creek Rd., Malibu; malibucountrymart.com; mrchow.com. In another liquid realm, Esperanza offers more than 100 tequilas, and tequilero Christian Moya hosts opportunities to journey through tastings of the Mexican spirit in many incarnations, like Maestro Tequilero Reposado—“rested” in fire-charred, white-oak barrels, imparting an alluring, smoky note. Akin to a sommelier, Moya helps guests distinguish characteristics of mescal from tequila; and yes, rumored hallucinations from eating the worm are indeed a myth. The agave spirits pair adeptly with bites like scallop ceviche with green serrano, pollo con mole or lightly spiced and salty dark chocolates. ormally, I wait until January to decide on my New Year’s resolutions. This year, however, I got an early start on soul-searching during, of all things, a trip to a Wyoming dude ranch with my son and a good girlfriend. As we drove the few hours from the Denver airport to Saratoga, we had no idea what to expect until we arrived at the twoyear-old Brush Creek Ranch—a dead ringer for the set of the old western show “Bonanza.â€? Better still, there was a cast of characters equally as charming—and inďŹ nitely more gracious—working at this 40-room paradise stocked to the hilt with every conceivable ďŹ ve-star resort amenity. We were equally impressed with the decor in the cabins and main lodge. Exquisite chandeliers fashioned from antlers dangle from high ceilings over custom-made, dark wooden furniture and comfortable beds. While there are no television sets in the rooms, there is wi-ďŹ . The attractive staff assists in the planning of endless activities such as yoga at sunrise on a bluff (overlooking the Medicine Bow National Forest), horseback riding, skeet shooting, paintball and rock climbing. We began with a morning hike where buffalo roam. (While we saw very, ahem, fresh signs, fortunately, we didn’t run into any during our walk.) Later that morning, we went to the creek for a little y-ďŹ shing—a thrill even though I clumsily hooked my arm rather than a ďŹ sh. After lunch, we marveled at the sight of a bear cub in a tree before landing at the obstacle course: climbing tires, walking a fairly high tightrope with a safety harness and a zip line. “This is the coolest trip,â€? my son confessed to one of the CONTINUED ON PAGE 182 twentysomething guides.

be a generalist, sizing up a collection and then directing the troops—the specialists who dive into the nitty-gritty of cataloguing and making sales recommendations. If much of her assessments take place in the recessed, dark rooms of private collections, an auction offers a breath of fresh air and a public face to her work. Fiuczynski is part of an elite, international team of 50 auctioneers at Christie’s, and one of 20 women. It may be common in the art world for women to hold positions of power—Ann Philbin, Shaun Regen—but not so in this culture. (One of the first female fine art auctioneers in the U.S. was Lorna Kelly for Sotheby’s, in 1976.) Fiuczynski worked her way up in New York and spent years in Berlin, overseeing Nazi-era restitutional appraisals, including the famed Mauerbach Treasure (a group of objects stored in an Austrian monastery). In 1997, she finally landed in California to help run the west coast headquarters of Christie’s. “I think it’s very simple,” she says. “Whether you are a man or a woman, be the best at your craft. You must remain modest and humble. Be on your game; there can always be someone who can out-trump you.” cONTiNuED ON PAGE 182

The tuxedo counters, eventually with $5,500. “He’s bold, he’s fierce,” says Fiuczynski. “Don’t let him psyche you out,” she cajoles a lady in pearls. “You have it still,” Fiuczynski points to the man. “Anyone else?” “Anyone else?” “The gentleman has it,” she looks around. “It’s yours, sir!” She strikes a petite ivory gavel head with a resounding clack. Auctioneering is only a sliver of Fiuczynski’s role at Christie’s, where she has been for 27 years, cultivating relationships with buyers and sellers: museums and high-level collectors, interior decorators and bankers. She visits homes and estates, where she makes preliminary assessments about decorative objects and fine art. hen a new collector pops into a gallery to ask about a painting by Cy Twombly, the rep will often say it’s on hold. Emily Blunt asks as she orders eggs, spinach, toast and smoked salmon. After having spent the day practicing stunts and working out, it’s not weird at all. The protein load-up is for the action movie she’s filming with Tom Cruise, All You Need is Kill, that will keep her in London and away from her home in Los Angeles until early 2013. It’s not the first movie she has had to train hard for; when she was shooting 2011’s The Adjustment Bureau with Matt Damon, she had to learn ballet, something she describes as “being like an alien language to me.” But the whole physical process of this, her first action role, has been so strenuous she admits, at times, the thought of stepping back into a corset and bonnet—the kind she wore in 2009’s The Young Victoria—is tempting. “Tom was in today, and when he saw I had a bruise the size of an apple, he said”—she puts on a big, deep voice—“‘Yeah Blunt! That’s what an action movie’s all about!’ He thinks it’s fun that I’m losing my indie credibility. I hurt like hell!” Putting on voices, or accents of all shapes and sizes, is what attracted Blunt to acting in the first place: “I had a really bad stutter as a kid, and the thing that got me out of it was to imagine I was someone else—to take on a new identity via silly voice or by mimicking. It was the only way I could speak fluently.” She admits that in her early years she was occasionally teased for it: “Kids found it funny, and I can understand. There’s a frankness to the way they say, ‘What’s wrong with you? Why can’t you just say it?’” Fortunately, her parents—her father is a Queens Counsel barrister and her mother, a former actor-turned-teacher—knew she’d grow out of it. “They were there to catch us,” she says of herself and her three siblings, who grew up in Roehampton, just south of London. “Their presence and support was what allowed me to overcome and grow out of it. The stutter got left behind in the dust”—as did a career as a Spanish interpreter. “I know! Can you imagine?” she laughs, then puts on a Spanish accent, “Me ll-am-o Em-i-lee!” Blunt deferred university— she had planned to study Modern Language—when she landed an agent at 18. That was only a year after a teacher cast her in a play in the Edinburgh Festival. A resounding success, the fledgling actress decided to work in television and theatre for a couple of years. Director Pawel Pawlikowski gave her a big break in 2004’s much revered art-house film My Summer of Love. For the audition, he asked her to imagine her father caught in flagrante with the secretary, then pretend the whole thing was just a joke—with all the crying and laughing that might ensue. “I walked out and called my lovely agent Ken McReddie, whom I still have, saying, ‘Oh my god, I just made such a tit out of myself!’” It was but a hint of what was to come; save for an outline, most of the film was improvised. “It felt like you were jumping off a mountain,” says Blunt, “and you’d pray that something would occur to you in the scene that meant you’d be able to save yourself. It required a certain amount of guts.”

While The Devil Wears Prada catapulted her into international stardom with her Golden Globe-nominated portrayal of the over-ambitious and under-fed assistant, the perfect foil to Anne Hathaway’s more earnest Andy Sachs, she didn’t actually move to Los Angeles until she met her husband, actor John Krasinski. “You move where home is, and he is home,” explains the 29-year-old. The couple has been married for two years and is busy renovating a house in the Hollywood Hills. Over time, Blunt admits she has fallen in love with the nooks and crannies of the city. Days off are spent driving up the coast to Santa Barbara or Ojai, where the newlyweds have just bought a second residence. She loves Ojai Valley Inn & Spa and jokes at how she’s managed to convert Krasinski, a formerly reluctant spa-goer, to the joys of massage. Blunt also loves exploring the vintage shops along La Brea Avenue, perusing photography at the Fahey/Klein Gallery, or checking out Mid-Century furniture at Empiric and Gibson—something of a passion. “There is a lot of real life in L.A.; you just have to delve through what I call the sceney-scenes to find it. And I have the most amazing network of British and American friends who truly become your family when you live that far from home.” If they’re lucky, she’ll serve them dishes from brother-in-law Stanley Tucci’s new book, The Tucci Cookbook. “He’s the most amazing chef you could ever meet, and it’s full of all his family’s old recipes.” Another family member is her enormous dog, a red Labrador mix so big he could stand in for the dog in Hans Christian Andersen’s classic fairytale, The Tinder Box (the canine with eyes the size of saucers). “I never thought I’d be one of those owners who shows pictures of their dogs. It must be insufferable!” With our relaxing chat coming to a close, I glance down at my notes, and say: “What big thing could I have left out?” Dead-pan, she replies, “I don’t know. Maybe my big film Looper?” We laugh and I tell her that by coincidence, someone had just tweeted me: “Is Looper any good?” (The film opened in theaters the week we met.) Instinctively, she replies: “Tell her: ‘Yes! It bloody is!’” Blunt greatly enjoyed portraying Sara, a character she describes as “Phenomenal! A tough, mid-western farm girl who chops wood, wields a big shotgun and is fiercely protective of her child. It’s a really stunning film: original, emotional and action-packed, and that’s a combination you don’t find that often. Oh gosh, have I oversold it now? What if you don’t like it?!” And with that, she’s off, leaving me with the same overall impression I had when she first ordered her eggs: Emily Blunt is not at all weird and, in fact, very, very nice. •

The hillside château of Cal-a-Vie heath spa proprietors Terri and John Havens displays the resplendent glory of all things antique—and the joys of acquisition By Christine Lennon Photographed by Lisa Romerein

he oldest building in San Diego County sits high on a hillside in the aptly named community of Vista, a town 40 miles north of the city border that’s remarkable mainly for its sloping views of the surrounding terrain leading right down to Oceanside Beach. The structure is a charming 400-year-old chapel from Dijon, France, once part of a Carmelite convent, taken apart, packaged and shipped, then carefully rebuilt, stone by stone. It’s both humble and grand, and it feels at once oddly out of place and right at home in the little enclave that houses it—the Cal-a-Vie destination spa. Its presence also explains the dual commitment the of the spa’s owners, Terri and John Havens, to French antiques and to creating an atmosphere of complete luxury. Surrounded by plenty of other treasures from its homeland, the chapel is not alone. Just a few yards away is a limestone orangerie, originally built in 1710 as a greenhouse on the same Provençal convent. Every building on the 220-acre property, including the Havens’ private residence, is embellished with statuary, tapestries, light fixtures and furnishings almost exclusively from France, all of which are very old, many museum quality. “I’d say that we are definite Francophiles,” says Terri. She, John and their three young children use the spa and the spectacular château they built as a vacation home. “I’m from New Orleans, and the French antiques, the high ceilings in the rooms you see here—that’s what I grew up with.”

When the Havens purchased the 14-year-old property back in 2000, they were drawn to the location, the rolling hills and cool ocean breezes that reminded them of their travels through Europe. At the time, their primary residence was in New Orleans—a regal house accented with exquisite furnishings and designed with entertaining in mind. “Back then, John was running marathons,” says Terri. “He wanted to run in different cities, just to keep it interesting. And I was very interested in destination spas, so we thought, ‘Let’s check out different spas as we go.’ There are fewer than 10 in the U.S., and they can be frumpy with just basic treatments and services. So, when he decided to race in San Diego, I booked a week here. As soon as we arrived, we knew Cal-aVie was special. We loved the light and the environment. We just fell in love.” It took two years for the owners, who’d been contemplating a sale, to part with it. Once they did, John, a self-described “project-aholic” and geologist, president of his family’s oiland-gas information business called Seismic Exchange, and a co-owner of the Houston Astros, dove into renovations that have continued for a decade. One of the first items on the to-do list was to transport the chapel. They also updated the treatment list and introduced state-of-the-art fitness training. Then, they shifted focus to accommodations, installing formal European and meditation gardens, planting a vineyard, and incorporating antiques in every room. Even the gym is outfitted with historic tapestries. >>

<< During many trips to France, Belgium and Italy over the years, the couple filled container after container with towering library shelves, oversized mantels, ancient wall paneling with peeling paint and ornate mirrors, to ship back home. Now, thanks to the spa’s 30 guest rooms and public spaces, they finally had a place to put it all. But the most challenging of all the tasks was building a private residence from the ground up, over two years. “When we first started coming here, we’d stay down at the old main house, where the lobby is now,” says Terri. “There was only a living room, one bedroom and one bathroom for all of us. Our oldest son would sleep on a cot in the room. The baby would be in a bassinet at the end of the bed, and our middle son would be in bed with us. It wasn’t exactly comfortable.” Then, after Hurricane Katrina, the family decamped from New Orleans to Houston, where they moved into a 10-bedroom house designed by architect John Staub in the early ’30s. Naturally, the California accommodations felt a little snug by comparison. Another issue with having kids at a spa: The sounds of children playing didn’t exactly make the guests, who pay close to $10,000 to escape there for a week, comfortable, either. “At first, I was always bringing the kids everywhere. Then, once it got back to me that someone had complained about the children that she had left her own and didn’t want to hear someone else’s,” explains Terri. “And then it happened again. And again. So we knew we had to build a family place on the property.” The solution was to construct a sprawling, new château just a short golf-cart’s drive away, with its own massive pool, play room, spa cabanas, outdoor kitchen and entertaining pavilion. Their former neighbor in New Orleans, architect Michael Carbine, who also owns Mac Maison antiques, knew exactly what they desired, and was happy to design around the Havens’ growing collection of reclaimed paneling, bookshelves, mantelpieces and light fixtures. Almost every item in the house has some kind of impressive provenance, from the ornately carved beds to the custom-designed and forged hardware in the kitchen. Every chandelier, in every room, is antique and unique. “Our deal is no two chandeliers, and sinks, are alike throughout the property,” admits John. “We love picking those up when we travel.” Terri is beginning to wonder if he loves it too much. “We have plans to open an antiques store at Cal-a-Vie because we have so much, but they keep getting delayed,” she says. “Over the last 13 years, we’ve been collecting and my husband just doesn’t want to sell anything. He doesn’t want to part with it. It’s all too special.” •

magine waking up, beneath a crystal chandelier in a mirrored, gray satin boudoir, and putting on matching lingerie and seamed stockings…every morning. For Dita Von Teese (née Heather Renée Sweet), it’s the only way to start the day. “That’s my gear. That’s what I’ve done since I was 16 and worked at a lingerie store. I just like it,” she says in a soft, almost mid-western twang. In the introduction of her first book Burlesque and the Art of the Teese, she writes: “Sweatpants (at least spiritually) chafe me. If I am chilled, I nuzzle a fur stole…glamour is a way of life.” Step inside her home within a gated community in Los Feliz, and there’s a delirious display of exotic taxidermy, chests filled with china tea sets, marabou robes and memorabilia. If anything, in a business that some categorize as “loose,” Von Teese is an incredibly disciplined personality. The natural blonde, who dyes her hair jet-black in her bathroom, says, “I don’t have a glam squad. I don’t have a stylist. I don’t ask people to do things for me. The glitter on my bathtub [for the show]—I did that with my two hands. You know, I just like to do things myself because I feel like all those little things come across on stage.” Like the flashy gold bathtub, her tricks are full of gusto. Von Teese has spent the past 20 years choreographing original routines, reviving the lost art made famous by idols Mae West and Gypsy Rose Lee. As the centerpiece of the neo-burlesque movement, she’s the force behind a roving mélange of feathers, corsets and tassels. She has performed in more than 15 countries and picked up sponsorship deals along the way (including a five-year post as the global ambassador for Cointreau). She is currently penning her third book to help fund new shows: It costs her around $80,000 to produce each seven-minute act and there are currently 10 in rotation. She’s in control of the whole process: the elaborate, embellished costumes, music, makeup and props. And she’s resourceful, having imported a mechanical bull from Murtaugh, Idaho, that’s now swathed in pink-velvet with Swarovski crystal covered steer horns. continued on page 182

esigner Ken Fulk delightedly describes his salon-style soirĂŠes as “pop-upâ€? parties. At the end of September, as Fulk was juggling various projects, he received a last-minute query to organize and deliver one within 36 hours. In addition, this prom-themed, surprise fĂŞte also required unicorns. “I received the call as I was driving,â€? Fulk recalls of this prospective client (whose name he’s contractually bound to withhold). “I phoned back in 20 minutes and said, ‘I’ll do it with the caveats that you can’t cancel. And, I’ll be reasonable, but you can’t ask about costs. There just isn’t time.’â€? When the 200 guests arrived at Fulk’s SoMa loft, there was a pony adorned with a unicorn horn, a sushi chef, photo booths, a hot dog cart and confetti canons. “I love the ridiculousness of having just 36 hours’ notice to get a unicorn, a band, a DJ and bartenders,â€? laughs Fulk, a slim, blue-eyed blond who dresses with the panache of a Wildean dandy. “I have great installation experts who can turn out a party, turn out a house so we can move from one thing to the next. It’s all a bit theatrical.â€? Eschewing the idea of a traditional events business, Fulk still enjoys the exuberance of entertaining as he mixes with the likes of a diamond-clad Denise Hale and fanciful ďŹ lmmaker John Waters. Fulk, 47, grew up in a hamlet outside of Charlottesville, Virginia. He studied English and History at the University of Mary Washington. And he moved to San Francisco 18 years ago with his long-time partner, now husband, pianist Kurt Wootton. A self-described “real estate junkie,â€? Fulk’s love of interiors led to an unchartered career staging homes for sale. His core business remains his interior design work—supported by a 35-person staff, now including architects. “I love being enveloped into all aspects of our clients’ lives. We’ve probably done six or eight weddings, but I never want to ‘do weddings,’â€? Fulk explains. “I do them because we have intimate relationships, and they trust that we understand their needs.â€? Fulk’s design clients extend from San Francisco to international locales such as London, where he recently completed an up-do of a historic Regent’s Park home, and a farmhouse in Dordogne, France. In February, 2011, he undertook his ďŹ rst restaurant renovation, working with chef Amanda Michael to create Jane, a cafe at the hip, caffeinated heart of the Upper Fillmore District. And Durham Ranch, his 80-acre St. Helena spread, provides ďŹ ve-star caterer Paula LeDuc with an exclusive venue where Fulk once created a “turnkeyâ€? nuptial celebration for a Chicago client (whose sole request was that the designer surprise her with a ďŹ ve-day affair, invitations and all). >>

<< “My philosophy is,” Fulk explains with a chuckle, “have party, will travel.” Fulk is also sporting the title Creative Director of The Battery, a London-style private club slated for a spring, 2013, opening in the city’s Jackson Square district. Developed by Bebo co-founders Xochi and Michael Birch, who realized a multi-million dollar profit when they sold a social-networking site to AOL, the interior architecture of this 1907 brick-and-timber building is being re-imagined by Fulk, who also outfitted their Gold Coast manse. The club will feature a spa, restaurant and 15 hotel suites, all crowned with a Modernist glass penthouse. Regardless, it has been an eclectic year at his fanciful loft: When London-based illustrator David Downton visited in February for a dinner with friends, Fulk recalls “one of the most elegant, pretty and girliest evenings we’ve hosted.” This past summer, he hosted an exhibition for “A Peep At P-Town.” It supported one of Fulk’s personal passions: the artists of Provincetown, Massachusetts, the acclaimed art colony where Fulk has long kept a home. In October, his loft set the stage for an American Conservatory Theater Halloween-themed dinner and concert, starring Stevie Nicks, to raise funds to refurbish the Strand Theater—recently donated to ACT by Fulk’s clients Laurie and Jeff Ubben. “The fact that ‘Halloween’ and ‘Stevie Nicks’ are in one sentence about San Francisco is thrilling for me,” says Fulk. “And the Strand has the opportunity to be the anchor for the rebirth of Mid-Market, the main drag of San Francisco that has long been blighted. My loft is only three blocks away.” That turn-of-the-century, three-story loft complete with mezzanine, which Fulk purchased in 2006, began as a furniture manufacturing setting in 1908. But among a certain set, Fulk’s loft is better remembered as the site of the former Mr. S. S&M leather factory. The element of “naughty” is a theme Fulk often weaves through his work—from taxidermy art to a dramatic “Heaven & Hell” dinner for fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier’s retrospective at the de Young Museum last March. “To be able to surprise Gaultier with a striptease starring Dita Von Teese atop a mechanical bull while shocking some of the more staid museum members, then going to the downstairs disco with boys and girls in cages and Gaultier screaming, ‘Magnifique,’” he enthuses, “Well, I’m just a little boy from Virginia. It was an honor to be involved.” That contrast between high-brow, low-brow; uptowndowntown edge is a signature. And the idea that anyone spends day-in, day-out with the same homogenized set simply bores him. “San Francisco has this very blue-blood society. But it’s also known for the ’60s, free-love movement and gay rights,” explains Fulk. “Somehow these elements live in harmony here yet don’t always interact. It’s like a puzzle that needs solving, and I love to mix the pieces together.” •

Reboot back at the Ranch cONtiNuED fROM pAgE 142 By early evening, we were ready to retire to the saloon, where button-down and denimclad guests swapped stories from their funpacked days. A father-son duo from California was determined to return home with a buffalo head. A couple of women were getting away to celebrate a 50th birthday. The week prior, a team from Google had taken over the entire ranch. (“Of course they did,” we all laughed.) Friendly bartenders offered a panoply of drinks (from cosmos and fresh mint gimlets to Shirley Temples) before a communal, familystyle dinner in the main lodge of corn chowder, delicious steak and killer peach cobbler. It got me thinking that the best New Year’s resolution might be to take vacations, or even days at home, where I choose to tune out from the high-tech pace of modern life and tune-in to nature. ANDREA fiuczyNski Weeks before the live auction for the Pacific Asia Museum’s annual benefit, Fiuczynski speaks with the event coordinator dozens of times to iron out nuts and bolts. “You always want to start and end an auction with a sure-fire sell,” she says. A regular on the charity circuit— conducting approximately 20 auctions annually, including 2011’s Artists for Haiti sale (which raised $13.7 million)—she’ll offer advice on merchandise, too. “I don’t want to get up there and have five duds. The final impression is with the auctioneer and with Christie’s.” The well-researched professional arrives on the scene with printed notecards, ready to add ideas about the opening bids, price intervals and tips about donors. Sometimes, she’ll make a fuss about and bring a celebrity on stage; other times, she’s extra discreet. She’ll view the works for sale in person—“I never sell anything I haven’t seen”—and heads for the ballroom. Battling ambient dinner sounds, she paces the stage at an old-school club in downtown L.A., injecting energy into the sophisticated crowd and “feeling the room.” “It’s interactive theater,” she says. Once the last lot is sold, she slides gracefully into her seat and attempts to take a few bites from her dinner. She hugs two women who approach her and then whispers to me, “They were at the auction I did a few years ago, at the Beverly Hilton. The power went out. Someone found an old-fashioned bull horn, the director’s kind, and I conducted the auction in the emergency lighting.” After all, the show must go on. • DEBORAH McLEOD who want to push the boundaries…most people who buy Contemporary art have to defend it, frankly,” she says. McLeod hopes to guide her artists into the hands of these sorts. She mentions no names, but

the biggies in California are obvious: the Broads, the Bells, the Schwabs, the Stones. “Selling artwork, all money is not the same shade of green.” It’s akin to an agent putting her actor in a movie, she explains. It needs the best script possible, the most interesting role, a great supporting cast. And after five years at BlumHelman Gallery (co-owned by Joseph Helman, closed in 1991), another 13 at Christie’s, and now eight at Gagosian, McLeod knows the players. On the artist side, she helps manage showing schedules and produces exhibitions at the gallery. On the collector side, she visits clients’ homes to get a better sense of their aesthetic, attends museum shows with them and presents work she thinks might match. There’s art to be found at Gagosian around $50,000, but a million-dollar sale is “more fun.” And for the committed collector, perks such as studio visits beckon. There’s also the thrill of working for the most powerful dealer in the world—Larry Gagosian. (But that’s not all fun and games; as of press time, Gagosian was in the midst of two thorny lawsuits.) “Everything is first-class when it comes to Larry,” McLeod gushes. “He has astonishing taste in all aspects. The heavy business cards, the Richard Meier building... he’s also the most tenacious man I’ve ever met.” • MARy zLOt for some reason, must sell, she brings the piece back to the dealer. “I really believe in the dealer system. Being up-front and honest allows you to enjoy a reputation that is helpful for all your clients,” she says. “When something great comes into a gallery, and they know we represent terrific clients, we get the call.” It’s not just shopping. The team educates, researches the provenance of pieces, deals with insurance, manages the collections, and produces educational videos and slides for all their corporate accounts (Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co.’s worldwide international offices; Schwab corporation; Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe)— even commissioning and finding art for the $1.2 billion Dallas Cowboys Stadium. Now, largescale wall drawings by Franz Ackermann, Mel Bochner and Lawrence Weiner appear on staircases, walls and ramps, and Jenny Holzer does her “truisms” on the video screen. “Education is such a large part of our work. I love learning about new artists and I appreciate and respect the creative spirit. And sharing that with our clients…It never gets dull or boring!” she says. •

“I’ve had to try harder at everything I’ve ever done in my whole life except for being me. I’m not the youngest. I’m not the best dancer. I’m not the tallest. There are a lot of things that I’m not, but [that’s why] I feel people want me to win. We like to watch people who are slightly flawed.” Against public opinion, the majority of Von Teese’s fans are women, which she credits to the concept of manipulated versus natural beauty. “I know the effect I have on people when I’m stripped down without my tricks,” she says. “On Halloween, I put on jeans and paint my nails beige, wear beige lip-gloss and a blonde wig. I never get a second look.”

Heather (a name reserved for the closest kin) attended high school in Orange County—her parents relocated the family from her native Michigan. “I didn’t have the money to buy designer clothes and things my friends were buying—Jordache and Guess jeans. I just felt really ordinary and boring and was incredibly shy.” She found a curling iron, started wearing makeup, transformed flea market lingerie into dresses and relished the sudden attention. After her stint at Lady Ruby’s lingerie shop in high school, she was working at a makeup counter by day and by night, had landed her first gig at a Tustin strip joint called Captain Cream (which she left in ’98). Von Teese’s stage name was a tribute to the silent film star Dita Parlo, and when Playboy required a surname for a lingerie shoot, she chose Von Treese from the phone book. The magazine misprinted it as Von Teese, and she just decided to stick with it. It’s also not a secret that in her twenties she got breast implants and had a beauty mark tattooed next to her left eye. And after years of wearing corsets, Von Teese is able cinch her waist from a size 22 to a 16.5. One day shy of her 40th birthday, she is elegantly perched on a blue velvet chaise in her library. A team of workers is in the process of covering the backyard in two feet of rose petals (she insists they are only helping for the party). “The theme is disheveled formalwear. Exiled aristocrats.” Hardly showing her age, Von Teese performed her signature Martini Glass number just a few weeks prior at the opening of The Ritz-Carlton, Vienna. It’s not a family show, in nothing but a G-string and pasties, she swirls and strips around the rim while bathing herself with an olive shaped sponge. “When I’m up there, I’m not like, ‘Oh my god, everyone thinks I’m so sexy.’ I’m thinking, ‘I hope people like this. I hope it’s funny. I hope they get the joke.’” By and large they do— and her sex appeal is not lost on anyone, either. Since her divorce in 2007 from musician Marilyn Manson, plus another three-year relationship, she has been single for the past year. “I’m a grown-up now. I definitely feel differently about trying to let people know more about who I really am. I’m not trying to intimidate people,” she says. The real Dita Von Teese seems to be an honest woman who’s still looking to buy her ’50s dream house, takes dressage lessons in Griffith Park and enjoys throwing parties. She’s laying the groundwork for a future off the stage, recently launching her first fragrance at Fred Segal, the international ARTDECO cosmetics collection, Von Follies lingerie (available on stylebop.com), and a dress collection at Decades on Melrose. She’s quick with a compact—but deplores superficiality: “Someone asked me the other day if I ever feel objectified on stage. I’ve never felt objectified on stage, but I do when people just want to get my picture. You know they just want their Facebook picture; they want to Tweet. They don’t even say hello or introduce themselves.” Or worse, “When I pick up a magazine, I don’t want to read a story if the actress or actor doesn’t say something racy or vulnerable or interesting. I don’t want to hear about their character or their makeup line. No, I don’t care.” But only if it’s the truth. She refers to an embarrassing story her family read in Vanity Fair that claimed she was in a triple X-rated gang bang (which was actually a Czechoslovakian girl using her name). “How could they get that wrong?” she wonders. “It’s not like I’m hiding anything.” •

Liberace, 1955 every christmas, Liberace would festoon his home in Sherman Oaks with an outrageous display of holiday cheer. One year, he spent upwards of $25,000 on a dozen life-size reindeer, a nativity scene and 18 fully decorated trees. in 1955, he added a piano-playing rooftop Santa with a giant, antennae-like candelabra, in his own honor. The delirious scene caused messy traffic jams (and irritated the neighbors to no end), but, of course, it was all in good spirit.
