ith summer upon us, I dream of how to spend these wonderful, lazy days (to be fair, for most, they aren’t that lazy). In this issue, we guide you through the best of the season in the Golden State. For starters, you can take our California Road Trip. Hop in (why not rent an over-

the-top dream car!) and cruise the Pacific Coast, stopping along the way. Our editors have scoured the state to report on what’s exciting. We have all the newest spots and events, north to south, paired with insider secrets from locals. Nothing more is needed to create the ultimate itinerary. What to wear for that beach bonfire or poolside in Carmel is the next question. We have your

back—sprinkling our summer picks throughout the pages. From seaside cool in Venice (p.144) to floral dresses for the Annual Lotusland Fundraiser in Montecito (p.126) to pre-fall choices on the streets of San Francisco (p.132), we have curated your wardrobe. And let’s not forget about accessories…from beach totes and towels to the best bikinis. You’ll need them for a summer sail around Lake Tahoe. This insanely beautiful spot is profiled in “Tahoe Confidential” (p.138). We bring you the ins and outs and the who’s who as we shine our spotlight onto this magical place. Another mythical area is the famous Little Dume surf spot on Point Dume in Malibu. For the issue’s home feature, we go inside the house of photographer Lyndie Benson. With its perfectly assembled treasures, books and art, it is a chic way to rethink beach style—nary a seashell in sight. Someone who has been in our sights since childhood, Drew Barrymore is the ultimate child actor turned bona fide movie star. On top of her success, throw in producer and entrepreneur and you only have a few of the things that make Drew who she is today. She is also a new wife and a mother, and if you ask her, those are her favorite roles yet! On the day we photographed her in a breathtaking Holmby Hills garden, I loved watching her collaborate with lensman Diego Uchitel. When her daughter, Olive, visited the set, Drew danced around the lawn, holding her adorable girl with the sun beaming down on her back. She thanked us for bringing together the team to create such fun portraits on such a lovely day. Isn’t that what the season is all about? Dancing around a garden, or a beach, or a field of wildflowers, enjoying the sun’s warm embrace and just letting go… Whatever you decide to do this summer, this issue can help you make it an unforgettable one—and that is what the perfect California summer

Jennifer Hale Founder & Editorial Director

is all about!

We’d love to hear from you Please send letters to edit@magazinec.com.

If the dinner celebrating LACMA’s upcoming James Turrell retrospective is any indication of what to expect at the museum this summer, be prepared for a grand display. After three full days of set-up, 146 fashionable supporters were picked up via private coach and driven to the Vacheron Constantin boutique on Rodeo Drive—all before arriving at the campus for five courses plated by Alain Passard and a performance from San Diego native Andra Day. “Just another day at LACMA,” joked Michael Govan of the lavish spread. Guests went home with iPad minis and memories of one of LACMA’s most decadent evenings.

The Australian native has mastered the art of effortless, year-round dressing over the decade she’s lived in the Golden State. “[Balinese silk] has a nice weight to it and it’s very fluid, so it works for day. Our favorite day at The Americana at Brand is a mixture of fashion, food and discovery. First stop: Barneys New York CO-OP, where Matt feeds his sneaker addiction with a new pair of Adidas, and Tara is intrigued by the Loren Stewart bracelets. Tempting! Then on to Barnes and Noble, where Matt discovers the first issue of Modern Farmer, a magazine that shares our belief in the farm-to-table philosophy. Lunch at Chi Dynasty and at last Pinkberry, where we sample their new Greek yogurt: chocolate with berries, chocolate granola and cinnamon honey – tasty. It’s another delicious day at The Americana at Brand.

Happy Campers

Digital detox and mind-body healing begin at a Malibu sleepaway ’m not a big camper—not even as a kid—but after hearing about something called Campowerment, I gathered my courage, sleeping bag and pillow and took off for this new take on the girls’ getaway in the Malibu hills. (Think summer camp for grown women.) Driving on PCH, a right turn up a narrow road ends 800 feet above the Pacific Ocean at the Sycamore Canyon property. I was greeted by Campowerment’s founder and director, Emmy Award-winning TV producer Tammi Leader Fuller. Her look was different than usual, complete with a clipboard, whistle and megaphone. “If camp director had been a major in college, I would have gotten a Masters,” she explained. It didn’t take much to realize that this camp was also a family affair; Leader Fuller’s two daughters, sister and 77-year-old mother showed us around the perch with 180-degree ocean views. Let’s be real here…the facility is indeed a kids camp for the Wilshire Boulevard Temple in the summer. The sleeping arrangements are bunk beds. But this weekend isn’t about getting spa treatments. Instead, personal enrichment, nature and delicious meals are on the menu (and there are options for vegetarians, carnivores and those who are gluten-free). Around the campfire with 75 other women, we listened to charismatic life coach and business strategist Dawn Andrews. She spoke, not preached, about simple ways to improve professional and personal relationships. Wine and vodka were

flowing; soon, so were the songs—more “Leaving on a Jet Plane,” less, “I am Woman, hear me roar.” Next, a classic chick-flick everyone could agree upon: Dirty Dancing. After the festivities, we retired to our 10-person cabins. Special care was taken to have an eclectic group bunk together like CEOs, lawyers, fashionistas and stay-at-home moms. Each of the nine lodgings could easily be identified with names such as Rage Against the SUV and Bunk O’Bombshells. Taking a top bunk, I was wondering if I’d sleep well. I woke up eight hours later, fresh and hungry. Leader Fuller laid out a slew of activities from which to choose, including yoga on a bluff overlooking the Pacific, a designer clothing swap, an obstacle course which includes walking a fairly high tightrope with a safety harness and a zip line. It was easy to fill the day or you could do just one or two activities. She also handpicks well-known authorities to visit throughout the weekend. The list includes top chefs, authors, doctors and relationship experts. (The only man allowed is an energy healer by the name of Ubi Sheikh.) There is cell phone service, but the longer you’re at Campowerment, the less you feel the need to connect to the outside since you’re busy connecting with the amazing women right in front of you...something nice to remember long after leaving camp. $975, all-inclusive weekend. Day camp and virtual camp available; campowerment.com. •

TODAY’S Macau IF

you’re planning a trip to Asia this year, one stop that should not be overlooked is Macau. Located on the southeast coast of China, it’s easily accessible from the United States with no visa requirements for Americans. Most visitors get to Macau by flying to Hong Kong and then taking a 50-minute high-speed ferry ride. Macau is also a 2-hour, nonstop flight from Shanghai and is within a 2- to 3-hour flight from most major Asian destinations. Macau comes to life in its blending of Eastern and Western cultures, living in harmony for nearly 500 years. The charming classic architecture of Macau

is reminiscent of Europe. Portuguese piazzas meet Buddhist temples, colorful villas cross with traditional Chinese gardens, and cobblestone streets meet bustling markets. Another legacy of the Portuguese and Chinese cultures in Macau is the discovery of true fusion cuisine. The delicious Macanese cuisine is not only a mix of Portuguese and Chinese dishes, but also a combination of African, Indian, Malaysian and Brazilian flavors from Portuguese explorations around the world. This year is an exciting one for Macau, with the 25th anniversary of the International Fireworks Display Contest in

www.visitMacauchina.cOM/deals

Macau.indd 1

September 2013 and the 60th anniversary of Macau’s Grand Prix in November 2013 filling up the fall calendar. Imagine one of Asia’s most beautiful skylines glowing with magnificent fireworks lighting up the sky or experiencing the extraordinary excitement of Macau’s Grand Prix, where hundreds of cars and motorcycles zoom through the city streets. These are just two of the many diverse and dynamic experiences visitors can enjoy in Macau. could do this for anyone else,” says Glenn Lawson, gesturing to his artfully arranged Los Feliz abode. “And I have. I help clients with their homes all the time. But when it came to my own home, I was stuck.” Lawson is one half of the duo behind Lawson-Fenning, the contemporary furniture showroom with two Los Angeles locations and a third, scheduled to open on Sunset Boulevard in Silverlake later this summer. Back in 1997, when Lawson and Grant Fenning were graduate students at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, they opened nearby Rm. 107. In 2000, they created their namesake L.A. shop and have quickly become local authorities on vintage modern furniture, and a go-to source for pieces by emerging West Coast designers. Two years ago, when Lawson moved from an angular contemporary house in Silverlake to this ’20s-era Spanish-style residence, he started from scratch. “I painted everything white and tried to breathe for a little bit, just live

06 Home_Turn IC.indd 98

in the space and see what happened,” he says. A year later, he contacted old friends David John Dick and Krista Schrock, new partners in design firm Disc Interiors. Schrock, who previously worked for designers Nickey Kehoe and Jane Hallworth, was also known for starting the artful indie magazine Collected. Dick, an artist and a former glass blower, shares Schrock’s love of classic interiors with a rustic edge; and layered, textural rooms that use color and accessories sparingly. “It was a treat to work with Glenn, who is such a collector and lives with so many beautiful things,” says Dick. “It challenged me to learn how to deal with so many objects.” Schrock and Dick installed a Plain English-inspired kitchen with green cabinetry and Carrara marble countertops, and they turned a warren of lower level rooms into a handsome master suite with a sitting area and patio. Lawson has since adapted to his refreshed surroundings quite well, though he’ll swap out a sofa from his warehouse at a moment’s notice. “I can’t help it,” he explains. “I’m addicted.” From dinner on the sunny patio to drinks by the fireplace, Schrock surmises, “It’s the ultimate California house.” lawson fenning.com; discinteriors.com. •

ack in March, when former W Magazine editor Kevin West co-hosted Fritz Haeg’s “Domestic Integrities” installation at The Hammer, the Master Food Preserver’s contribution included a lemon-curd sweet made with Band of Outsiders’ Scott Sternberg and Ammo restaurant. In Saving the Season ($35; Knopf), excerpted here, the Deep Springs College graduate and Hollywood Hills resident consulted literary manuscripts, marquee farmers, and friends and legends like Valerie Gordon and June Taylor to pen the story-packed compendium. It’s a bounty of jelly, marmalade and pickle recipes, timely and timeless for today’s cult of domesticity. >>

hen I was twenty, I took a year off from college, which turned into two years as I hung around Berkeley, California, vaguely hoping to find my way into the food scene there. The benefactor of my ambitions, such as they were, was David Tanis, who in 2011 retired from Chez Panisse after some 30 years, to write cookbooks full-time. David hooked me up with two stages, pronounced in the Gallic manner like “stahj”—restaurant lingo for unpaid internships. The first was at Greens, the legendary vegetarian restaurant cofounded in 1979 by Deborah Madison, an alumna of Chez Panisse and the San Francisco Zen Center. In the history of American meat-free cookery, Greens was arguably the first American restaurant to justify the previously oxymoronic phrase “vegetarian cuisine.” The day I was there, the kitchen smelled of simmering stockpots and baking winter squash. I was assigned a flat of wild mushrooms to prep, which was a lot of wild mushrooms when you consider that they were small, fragile, dirty things. A cook—I wish I could remember his name— demonstrated the light brushing technique for cleaning them. Then he gave me a word of advice. “Treat each fruit individually,” he said. That he classed the mushroom as “fruit” was striking enough, a pretty high-class way to put it, or so it seemed to me at that impressionable age. But, more important, that he saw the mushrooms in front of us as specific and not generic shifted my worldview on its axis. That is to say, I saw a tiresome number of one thing— mushrooms—that needed to be improved. He saw many individual things that were unique in themselves and therefore complete. CLOCKWISE FROM ABOVE Author Kevin “Treat each fruit individually” thus represented an important episteWest. Caramelized mological distinction between Plato (there is a perfect Mushroom, but perpineapple with tequila and saffron. haps no single mushroom) and Buddha (every mushroom that is, is yet Olive oil cake another aspect of Mushroom in its infinite expressions). In the Greens with apricot jam. Extracting kernels worldview, food comes from nature, and the ideal function of the cook is to make spiced to reveal an ingredient’s inherent qualities as unobtrusively as possible. peach butter. Offerings from Over time, that worldview has become my own. his new book. My second stage has taught me something technical, so it’s easier to explain. David got me into the kitchen at Chez Panisse one particularly busy Saturday afternoon when extra bodies were needed to—literally—peel potatoes. I was nervous to be in the sanctum sanctorum of new American cooking, and as I worked, I let potato peelings drop everywhere, creating a mess that drew Alice Waters’ attention as she swept through the kitchen. She pushed me aside and crisply put everything in order, whole potatoes in one tidy CONTINUED ON PAGE 160 pile and peelings in another.

PEACH JAM | YIELDS 3 PINTS 5 lbs. ripe peaches | 2 T. freshly squeezed lemon juice | 3½ c. sugar 1. To peel the peaches, slash a shallow “X” in the pointed end of each fruit. Working with a few at a time, blanch the peaches for 60 to 90 seconds in boiling water, or until the skin loosens. Lift the peaches out of the water using a slotted spoon and set them aside to cool; remove the skins and pits. Slice each peach in quarters, then cut each quarter crosswise into fourths. Mix the fruit with lemon juice, stir in the sugar, and leave to macerate for 30 minutes.

2. Turn the fruit-sugar mixture into a large preserving pan, and rapidly bring to a full boil. Reduce over high heat to the gel point, 8 to 10 minutes at a full rolling boil, while stirring constantly. If the jam is too chunky for your liking, turn off the heat and stir with a whisk for another minute, to break down the chunks. Ladle the hot jam into six prepared ½-pint jars, leaving ¼-inch headspace. Seal the jars, and process in a boiling-water bath for 10 minutes.

hris Sewell and Kenny Osehan, the husbandand-wife team behind Shelter Social Club, resuscitated Santa Barbara’s Presidio Motel in 2007. Since then, they’ve jettisoned their polished, comfortable, yet “under”-designed aesthetic around the area: to an S.B. lodging (Agave Inn, 805-687-6009); to ever-charming Danish Solvang (Hamlet Inn, 805688-4413); and, most recently, to naturally minded Ojai (Ojai Rancho Inn, 805-646-1434). SSC hasn’t limited itself to hotels, either; on S.B.’s State Street, farm-driven Indonesian restaurant Sama Sama Kitchen (805-9654566) is in development, gado-gado salad and all. In renovating an old motel to satisfy the kind of weekenders who appreciate indigo-dyed curtains, the couple called upon artisan friends to give Rancho such one-ofa-kind accents. The getaway also hosts music bands and gift pop-ups à la Echo Park Craft Fair. Says Osehan, “We needed to create a place where like-minded people could come, meet others in the community and from out of town—not just a place to stay. It’s artisanal California with a spiritual twist.” sheltersocialclub.com. •

he modern baritone or tenor looks as attractive as he sounds. What’s more, it’s not unusual to see one scantily clad on the cover of Opera News, shirtless and smoldering. Nathan Gunn is definitely part of the new world order of male opera stars. But Gunn is known for more than just his physical attributes; the Indiana-born baritone is a regular at the Metropolitan Opera and on Broadway, and characters such as Papageno in The Magic Flute and the title role in Billy Budd are owned by him. At 42, Gunn, the director of the newly formed American Repertoire Council in Philadelphia, which is dedicated to commissioning American operas, appears in an exciting new contemporary work this June. “I believe opera in its own right can be the most powerful art form on the planet,” Gunn says. “And I believe opera needs to become relevant and sometimes controversial.” FROM TOP The artist. For Adamo, pushing A model of the the envelope is a natural piece of the process. “La Traviata was the Sweeney Todd stage set for the holy land. of its time,” explains Adamo. “The more theatrical, the more engaging, the more human, the more musical it can be, the more political it can be.” Adamo wasn’t sure how Gunn would react to Yeshua since he comes from a strong Anglican tradition, but after the first meeting, Gunn texted Adamo: “I am won over.” We’ll see if audiences feel the same way this summer. For those hoping to see some skin, yes, there is a sex scene. “I get oiled,” Gunn says, laughing. “Anointed! Anointed!” Adamo rebuts. June 19-July 7; 415-864-3330; sfopera.com. •

LOOK BOOK One artist makes sculpture out of books; another uses the pages inside for collage; a third toys with word play. These are the types of experimental creations that populate “Word Perfect,” Danielle Steel’s fifth-annual curated show at the Andrea Schwartz Gallery. Seven different artists from Taipei to Houston all massage the concept of written language—sometimes as subtle as Seamus Conley’s dreamy paintings, other times stinging, as with Jerry Kunkel’s wit. “Words are paintings of thoughts,” says Steel. “A single word can instantly conjure up a place, a person, a mood, a situation. The right word can transport you, upset you, excite you, delight you.” Gallery co-owner Andrea Schwartz is excited to return to an early theme when they collaborated on “Word,” in 2009, for their second show together. (The duo met when Steel owned a gallery in Presidio Heights.) “Because she is a writer, she has a different vision,” Schwartz says. And many of these artists are asking an important question in the digital age: What is the future of the book? Aug. 7-Sept. 6; 545 Fourth St., S.F., 415-495-2090; asgallery.com. •

the wackiest upbringings.”

T

he other day, Drew Barrymore and art advisor Will Kopelman, her husband of nearly a year, were trying to figure out what to do about the dining room in their Hollywood Hills home. “I told him, ‘Dining rooms are stupid. They shouldn’t exist. When was the last time we had a dinner party?’” Barrymore recalls. “I wish we were those people who threw seasonal cocktail parties for our friends—‘he owns a coffee place in Brooklyn and she works as a stylist.’ But we will never be that couple.’” When Kopelman suggested they use the room for—ahem— actual family meals, Barrymore says she burst into tears. “Family dinners would never have occurred to me, and that’s what I want most,” she says. “Now it’s my life mission to figure out this room.” At 38, Barrymore finally has what she’s always wanted: a family of her own. Kopelman, 36 this July, comes from a distinguished, tight-knit New York clan (mother Coco, is a philanthropist, father Arie is the former Chanel CEO and sister Jill Kargman is an accomplished novelist). They’re all in love with the newlyweds and their baby, Olive, born last September. “I won the in-laws jackpot,” says Barrymore. “It might be the best karma for having one of the wackiest upbringings. I never had dinner with my mom or dad, let alone together.” Of course, the granddaughter of legendary actor John Barrymore was only seven years old when she skyrocketed to mega-fame as the adorable little girl in E.T. And from there, well, she grew up very quickly. “It’s amazing to think that in life you can completely have a do-over,” Barrymore says. Besides becoming a happy wife and mother, in the last year, Barrymore launched a wine label (Barrymore) and a makeup line (Flower). She’s still a big Hollywood star on both sides of the camera; her 18-year-old production company, Flower Films, has produced movies including Donnie Darko, Charlie’s Angels and He’s Just Not That Into You. She’s about to start shooting a yet-untitled Warner Bros. romantic comedy in Africa that will reunite her with Adam

Sandler (50 First Dates, The Wedding Singer). With profits from her various endeavors, she’s also building a teaching academy in Africa as part of her Ambassadorship with the United Nations World Food Program. “I like creativity and I like business,” she adds. While she hates a moment away from her baby, one of the reasons why Barrymore is dedicated to growing her makeup line is to give Olive something other than a Hollywood legacy. “I would love nothing more than to be someone who has a good influence on her and to be able to pass along a company to her one day,” says Barrymore. It could be a big job. Since launching exclusively at Walmart in January, Flower cosmetics has exceeded initial projections. The products are custom-formulated with the same ingredients used in luxury makeup but sold at affordable prices because the company doesn’t advertise. Their business model allows for a quick development to shelf cycle. An expanded line will debut this fall. “When we see that green is trending from the Paris shows, we can respond to that before anyone else,” says Chris Miller, co-president of the company. “Drew is involved in absolutely everything,” he adds. Barrymore has plenty of experience with cosmetics. “I was always experimenting and curious about makeup,” she says. “I would go to concerts and paint my face crazy and happy and fun, and I’d pretend to be someone more conservative and glamorous on the red carpet.” Besides sitting in the cosmetics chair for countless shoots, she was a co-creative director of Cover Girl and the brand’s spokeswoman for five years. Moreover, she counts Revlon’s global artistic director Gucci Westman and Stila founder Jeanine Lobell as close friends and inspirations. If Olive joins the family business, Barrymore hopes that day will be far in the future. “I want her to be a kid for as long as possible,” she says. (Barrymore appeared in commercials before her first birthday.) For now, she seems content with plans to take Olive for plenty of hikes and to beaches along California’s coast. Maybe they’ll even sit down for family dinners in the dining room. Barrymore insists she’s not much of a cook, but she really knows how to assemble a great cheese plate. And, she’ll be pouring her own Pinot Grigio. The label says “Barrymore.” The company motto: “From our family to yours.” •

magine an entire summer breathing in pine-scented air, spending sun-struck days gazing at the lake’s magical, pure blue waters. That’s the privilege and pleasure of many California families over the last century as they’ve escaped San Francisco’s summer fog, valley heat and city life for weekends of cloudless boating, hiking, long lunches, boisterous kids and dogs running free, and dressing for cocktails on the dock or the beach. Ah, sunset. For San Francisco art collector Dolph Andrews and his extended family, summers have always meant Tahoe. “It’s the largest alpine lake in the Americas, and we go up there and have a glorious time,” says Andrews. His wife Emmy’s grandparents built their rambling house on the lake in the early 1900s, and the family has been going there ever since. Generations of children and grandchildren have taken boats out onto the pristine waters, and invited friends to join in the fun. “Since the ’70s, I’ve loved to stay the weekends with Dolph and Emmy, who are dear and longtime friends,” recalls Denise Hale, who traveled to Tahoe with her husband, Prentis, and trunks of chic sportswear and collections of Bulgari and David Webb. “The traditional style of family estates around the lake is very understated, with elegant staff and fabulous personal service,” says Hale. “The Andrewses were the most civilized ever, with everything planned and arranged for the comfort of their guests—but so subtle and low-key. I felt relaxed and so did Prentis, and we never wanted to leave.” The couple and the Andrewses and friends would briefly depart on Saturdays for lunch at Diana and Gorham Knowles’ residence, a classic camp-style timber house in Meek’s Bay with dramatic California art-filled interiors by Michael Taylor. The Knowleses, leaders of San Francisco society and style in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, headed up each June with their highly coveted Chinese cook and a multitude of staff and seasonal accouterments. Michael Taylor would follow to style, fluff and shape the house for months of parties, lunches and lazy afternoons. At their pine-shaded estate, complete with a dock and sandy beach and numerous alluring watercrafts, everything was luxurious, with

We saw a group paddling by in cocktail dresses and figured the boards must not be too tippy if they were going by in dinner attire! ing watercrafts, everything was luxurious, with Taylor’s signature taupe silk-chenille sofas and chartreuse silk pillows. The coffee table in the living room, a massive chunk of rough-hewn granite from a nearby quarry, was winched into the house over the Douglas firs and then hauled in between the French doors. There’s a lot to enjoy. Lake Tahoe is 22 miles long, 12 miles wide, and has 72 miles of shoreline. And the League to Save Lake Tahoe, founded in 1957, is a powerful group committed to preserving that Eden. The highlight of the summer season since 1969 has been the League to Save Lake Tahoe fashion show/benefit, the first of which Bill Blass and Saks Fifth Avenue hosted at the Rubicon Beach estate of Mr. and Mrs. John R. Metcalf. Blass presented his collection barefoot on the beach. At the 1975 show, Saks Fifth Avenue bolted down sheets of plywood to prevent his models from sinking into the sandy shore. Today, there’s a dramatic raised runway. In 1995, designer Oscar de la Renta debuted on the lake. He told a friend that the Lake Tahoe event is his favorite. “All year, I look forward to being in Lake Tahoe,” said de la Renta. In 2003, attendance broke 600. Guests over the years, like Nan Kempner, Marissa Mayer, Alexis and Trevor Traina, Dede Wilsey, Mara Fritz, Jean Larette, Rosemary Baker, and founding families such as the Andrewses dress in white linen, don hats and the latest resort wear. Then, they rush the trunk show tent for first dibs on the newest designs. The upcoming August 3rd show is expected to sell out once more. Over the years, the benefit has raised more than $15 million to keep the lake blue. In 2012, Lake Tahoe’s waters were the clearest in 10 years, according to UC Davis scientists who study the lake. Among the League’s earliest victories was the defeat of a development plan for a high-speed freeway circling the lake, a bridge over Emerald Bay, additional casino districts, and heavily populated urban centers around the lake. The newly-formed League successfully educated public opinion against the plan and helped guide management of the Tahoe area in a different direction since that time. “We’ve always worked to protect the lake from incorrect development, and to bring science continued ON page 160

n any given day, you can find at least one bewildered tourist traversing PCH in search of Malibu. Without a significant Main Street, or any kind of organized town center beyond the evergrowing Country Mart, locals don’t seem to mind that the charm of their beloved enclave eludes outsiders. “I like to say that Malibu is more of a state of mind than a destination,” says photographer Lyndie Benson, a Point Dume resident for the past 17 years. If you were looking for the real Malibu, you’d be well advised to turn to the native Angeleno for clues: She raised two boys here, sent them to Point Dume Marine Science Elementary School up the street and walked with them down a rocky path to the beach to surf before roll call with other local moms. Last year, she published a book of photographs, The Point (Dollhouse Publishing). A portion of proceeds from this visual love letter benefits The Malibu Foundation for Youth and Families. Look closely at the photo of the famous “Peace Paddle” that philanthropist Kelly Meyer and surfer Laird Hamilton coordinated and donated to the Natural Resources Defense Council, and you’ll spot Benson in the upper left corner, bobbing in the blue water on that cloudless day. “I grew up in Los Angeles dreaming of moving to Malibu,” she says, perched on a pale linen sofa, in her living room, surrounded by an impressive art collection highlighted by a Robert Graham sculpture, an Ed Ruscha painting and many of her own photographs. Looking tan and fit in a thigh-grazing Michael Kors caftan, the fiftysomething Benson explains how her interior design sensibility is built around multipurpose spaces and furniture. “I like the idea of having all the perks of an estate—but with a smaller-scale property. I don’t like to use the word downsize, but it’s just more practical to live in a house that’s not 15,000 square feet,” she says. Her version of a more manageable property includes a tennis court, a putting green, and a priceless view of the Pacific. “So I have a game room, with a pingpong table and a pool table that can also become a dining room, with just a small conversion. James Perse custom-makes these chic game tables. I push them together and have a continued ON page 160

JAM SESSIONS CONTINUED FROM PAGE 106

“Do everything neatly always,” she said before darting off. I’d nominate that sentence as the single best piece of kitchen advice ever imparted. Fifteen years passed before I went into a restaurant again, when my friend Akasha Richmond, proprietor of Akasha Restaurant in Culver City, asked me for a lesson on making jam. I was a bit nervous to be there as an instructor rather than a student, and frankly intimidated by the huge pile of Elberta peaches we had for making a restaurant-sized batch of jam. I forgot to consider each fruit individually. I wasn’t neat in all things. And it showed in the jam, which tasted good but had a sloppy, farmhouse look. Disappointed, I suggested to Akasha that we run it through a food mill to improve the appearance. “No, I like it,” she said. “It’s rustic.” And that was the third lesson I’ve learned in professional kitchens. The jam that we made didn’t need improving, because there’s no such thing as the perfect Jam. Instead, every jam that is, is yet another aspect of Jam in its infinite expressions. •

and prudent management and information to benefit the region,” says Bob Damaschino, board president for the last five years. Future goals include reinforcing science-based water monitoring, education, and beach cleanups, pulling weeds and protecting water-

sheds that support native wildlife. That said, new communities in the Lake Tahoe region are in development, including Martis Camp at Northstar, which includes a Tom Fazio golf course. Top San Francisco designers, Will Wick and Kendall Wilkinson have recently completed interiors for S.F. families who spend holidays there. “Tahoe has been my retreat since I was a child. It’s a place I take my own children to throughout the year,” says Wilkinson. “The boys can run around, hike, swim and just be energetic boys, away from hectic city life.” Wilkinson, who fashioned the expansive great room with natural materials such as locally quarried stone, added an urban nod to the furnishings with industrial-style lighting. The family takes in glorious views of the majestic pine trees flanking the property throughout the house. Interior designer Will Wick also recalls idyllic summers. “I learned to water-ski there,” he recalls. “We’d take out the Chris-Craft. The water is freezing cold, which encouraged my desire to ski well. It was exhilarating. Then we’d go mountain biking on the rugged forest trails and along the Tahoe Rim Trail, the 165-mile paths that forms a loop around Lake Tahoe.” Silicon Valley luxury travel planner Gwen Books insists, when she summers there, a quick dive from a pier is refreshing. “We love to go hiking and enjoy the cheerful squeaking of scrub jays and endless views of the brilliant blue lake from the peaks,” she says. “There are many hiking trails quite close to the lake.” Like many Tahoe residents, Books collects classic cars. “My 1969 Mercedes 280SL is my summer-at-LakeTahoe convertible, and I appreciate the classic wooden boats that ply the lake in summer,” she says. “In August there is a celebration, featuring vintage Chris-Craft, Gar Wood—truly many are works of art, gleaming mahogany and polished chrome, the only acceptable mode of transport across the lake.” Books is also fond of Fourth of July celebrations, where “fireworks fill the sky and are mirrored on the lake,” says Books. “It is spectacular.” Marin County designer Jean Larette drives up to Tahoe (with audiobooks on hand for the three-hour trek). She also tours around on one of the classic “woodies” or zooms across on a speedboat. “We often find a nice cove to an-

chor, and last year, I attempted to stand and balance on a paddleboard,” says Larette. “We saw a group paddling by in cocktail dresses and figured the boards must not be too tippy if they were going by in dinner attire!” And for those without a family estate or cumbersome staff, there are always houses by the lake to rent, friends with whom to bunk, and now the fourstar Ritz-Carlton, the new luxury hotel with Residence interiors designed by San Francisco designer Jay Jeffers. “Lake Tahoe continues its tradition of offering healthy living, surrounded by children, cousins, aunts and uncles, grandparents, and golden labs,” says Dede Wilsey. “Time stands still. It’s idyllic. I can’t wait to return.” •

POINT THE WAY CONTINUED FROM PAGE 154

dining table that seats 16.” On a tour of the house, Benson walks through an oak bar that’s stocked with candy jars and a popcorn machine for impromptu all-ages gatherings with family friends, and into a home theater. There, a massive sectional sofa has been upholstered in French terry. “The screen retracts, and the shades lift up so you have a cozy den,” she adds. “That’s how we entertain here, with friends and kids and dogs.” While she is not a professional interior decorator, she has taken on several home projects for friends and neighbors, most of whom are notable and, this being low-key Malibu and all, would prefer not to be name-checked. At the moment, she’s building a new home on a nearby street with Albino Construction and architect Sandy Young, a beachy-traditional clapboard house which will serve as a footprint for her design philosophy. She’s also settling into her own empty nest. Her younger son is visiting colleges while her eldest boy enters his junior year at Columbia University in New York. “When I go to see him, I stay at The Lowell, get a driver, see a show one night and have a few fabulous dinners,” she says. “So of course I love New York—for four days. I couldn’t live there. Out here, I spend my days hiking, playing tennis, surfing, entertaining friends. The light and the sky and the water are so amazing. Honestly, there’s no place I’d rather be.” •

story byline

The months after Ben Braddock received his diploma and returned to L.A. are largely spent floating in his parents’ Pasadena pool, as he avoids the idea of becoming an adult—or even worse, a young professional. Director Mike Nichols shot The Graduate around the USC and Berkeley campuses, the now-demolished Ambassador Hotel on Wilshire Boulevard, United Methodist Church in La Verne and Mrs. Robinson’s house at 607 N. Palm Drive in Beverly Hills. With responsibility, suits and a manipulative older woman waiting, why get out of the water?
