ndividual style can’t be taught…no matter how much one may spend trying to achieve it. You either have it or you don’t. If you do, it oozes from every ounce of your being. The way you wear a dress or jewelry, or decorate your home, will be consistently you. In this, our fashion issue, the women we highlight are stylish to their very core. Jessica Alba is a perfect example. She has the fashionable mommy/off-duty actress look down. Always chic in every image, she exudes elegance. Not content to rest on her laurels, she has parlayed a busy on-screen career into an even busier entrepreneurial role. Creating a brand full of natural products catering to children has made her even more of a power player—on her own terms. Another woman doing things her own way is designer Pamela Skaist-Levy. Having cofounded Juicy Couture and then selling it years later, she wasn’t ready to just sit back. She and partner Gela Nash-Taylor decided it was time to create another special line, Skaist-Taylor. The company’s DNA is so distinctively Californian that it is sure to be a big success. When Skaist-Levy needs to unwind, she retreats to her inspiring home in Los Angeles—an estate at once grand and elegant but cool at the same time. The same could be said of Skaist-Levy.
Founder’s Letter
Speaking of homes, famed model Angela Lindvall’s Topanga abode is as naturally gorgeous as it gets—an oasis just outside of Los Angeles. With animals and yurts, flowers and a pool, the place is magical. That she is opening the residence up select times per year for health retreats makes it even more special. It truly is a healing spot…and so authentically Lindvall. We shot her in the season’s best bohemian looks, in the most organic location of all—her home! And when thinking of individual style, it doesn’t get any more interesting than the bright young things in our big fashion portfolio, “The Kids Are Alright.” With uber cool girl Jacqui Getty curating this talented group, we knew we had the new “in” crowd. That they are all accomplished and stylish in their own right only added to the project’s uniqueness. And, with famed photographer (and former CFDA Perry Ellis award-winning designer) David Cameron at the helm, it was a dream shoot. To the point that style can’t be taught, the reason the stories come together so seamlessly is that they all express what is personal and authentic. When reading through our biggest issue ever (and our eighth anniversary issue on

ichael and Xochi Birch, the young couple who sold social networking site Bebo.com to AOL in 2008, envisioned a place in the city that would merge old-school S.F. with the vibrant, entrepreneurial hotbed the city has become. To bring this dream to life, they called on design impresario Ken Fulk to overhaul the iconic 1907 Musto Plaza building (previously a marble warehouse) in Jackson Square into a modern-day social club and hotel. This month, The Battery welcomes an eclectic group of authors, artists, professionals and socialites to the casual-dress, annual-dues club. (Hotel guests are also able to access many parts of the club as temporary members.) “I wanted the space to feel like it had been put together over a long period of time, full of eccentricities that reflect lives well lived,” says Fulk. On the first level is 717B, a white tablecloth establishment helmed by Executive Chef Jason Arbusto. Take the glass enclosed elevator to the second floor to find a quiet library, The Musto Bar (members-only), a study (for intimate gatherings) and a parlor, which can accommodate up to 90 people. The third level boasts 12 luxury suites with three additional indoor/outdoor suites on the roof-deck mezzanine—a perfect perch to take in the America’s Cup. 717 Battery St., S.F.; thebatterysf.com. •

Curves Ahead
Nevena Borissova carefully maps out the future of her expanding sartorial empire
F
ifteen years ago, Nevena Borissova—a feisty 22-year-old originally from communist Bulgaria—borrowed some money from friends and family to open a luxury boutique on Robertson Boulevard. “I was so scared. Will people come in, will they like, will they buy?” In short order, they did all three—Marisa Tomei was one of her first clients—and Curve became a second home to L.A.’s serious shoppers. Borissova has a visceral approach to buying, with a propensity for up-and-coming and often European talent. She is responsible for introducing Nevena innumerable young brands to California: Preen, Iro, Berardi, Isabel Marant, Raquel Allegra “and Borissova probably 100 more.” “I first bought Isabel Marant personally in Paris and made an appointment at the showroom over a decade ago. The chain boots were madness. We had presold 70 pairs. We were the only people in the States to have ordered them. She couldn’t produce them and wanted to cancel the whole thing. We literally got one pair that Kelly Wearstler owns. In the end, she decided to [go through with production] and saved us from refunding an insane amount of money.” In 2005, Borissova started producing pieces for the shop that she couldn’t find elsewhere. She also expanded: Soho opened in 2008, followed by Miami in 2009 and S.F. in 2011. This month, she opens a destination storefront on Bond Street in N.Y.’s Bowery district. And in 2015, Curve will anchor the new Hayden Tract development in L.A. with a BELOW, FROM LEFT Jenni Kayne custom 7,000-square-foot lifestyle shop. D’Orsay flat, $550. Curve’s S.F. dressing room. For fun, Borissova produced and Borissova, who is expecting her second boy this fall, is also excited styled a Hotel California-inspired shoot. for the launch of AOTC (Ahead of the Curve). It took many years for her to come back to production after the death of her first pattern maker. Now working with a designer from Joie, the full line is stocked with timeless pieces: flouncy skirts, leather tops and updated wrap dresses. “I really wanted something exclusive because everything gets taken away from me. We discover designers, make them cool, and then other stores come in and buy them two or three seasons later.” For the 15th anniversary, some of her best selling labels have contributed exclusive pieces (a Jenni Kayne D’Orsay flat, Viktor&Rolf bodysuit, Mary Katranzou scarf, Mugler purse, Pamela Love ring and more). “You can buy clothes anywhere,” says Borissova. “The truth is, we are here and we will be here because I am still so passionate.” shopcurve.com. •

A young L.A. philanthropist puts her fashion background to good use
r
ochelle Gores Fredston is just as well known among schoolchildren in Watts as L.A. society circles. After her 2007 relocation from Manhattan to L.A., Suzanne Marx introduced her to the Children’s Institute, Inc. (CII)—a century-old organization helping resuscitate the city’s poorest neighborhoods through youth development programs and support services. “I wanted to be hands-on,” an expectant Gores Fredston says. “Plus, their overhead is just so lean—I was blown away.” That’s the business side of Gores Fredston talking— she’s a Senior Advisor at The Gores Group, a private equity firm her father started in 1987, and oversees the operations of top fashion brands like J. Mendel, Twelfth Street by Cynthia Vincent and Big Strike. Shortly after joining the CII board, Gores Fredston launched PSLA (Philanthropic Society of Los Angeles), a committee solely devoted to raising funds for CII. In addition to volunteering, the group of hip, young entrepreneurs, fashion voices, social influencers and celebrities meet annually for the highly anticipated fashion show/fundraiser known as the Autumn Party. In the past, the event has partnered with Arcade (Gores’ former store on Melrose Avenue), designer Yigal Azrouël and J. Mendel. Saks Fifth Avenue will be the title sponsor for the upcoming fall party with funds going toward a permanent CII campus in Watts scheduled to open in 2017. Most recently, she revived the Back to School event, outfitting kids with knapsacks and supplies, and providing haircuts, clothes and manicures. That’s the icing on the cake: “We aren’t just going in and saying ‘Here’s a bunch of stuff,’” Gores Fredston explains of a community that has been resistant to outside help. A do-whatever-it-takes ethos coupled with a fail-proof business model have opened a lot of doors. “We are seeing changes in these kids in a month, two months, three months. It’s incredible.” ps-losangeles.com. •

Unlike most teenagers, Clara Mamet has already written and directed her first film (this past February), Two-Bit Waltz, starring William H. Macy. Creative ambition runs in the family: Mamet’s father is Pulitzer-winning playwright David Mamet, and her older half-sister, Zosia, is an actress on “Girls.” STYLE I like Birkenstocks and wearing my hair like Minnie Mouse. DIRECTOR Sidney Lumet, if for nothing other than his staying power. INSPIRATION Virtually none. I hate anything that’s good, as I’m a deeply jealous, off-balanced sort of person. HIDDEN TALENT I’m very good at untangling knots. FAVORITE RESTAURANT Hop Li Seafood in Santa Monica. CALIFORNIA My favorite thing about California is probably the L.A. AMBRE DAHAN • WALKINMYCLOSET.COM What, might you ask, is virtual- and social-wardrobing? Walk In My Closet founder Ambre Dahan has created an online world for trend seekers to catalogue, buy and sell high-end, contemporary readyto-wear and vintage looks. Art Director Julia Restoin-Roitfeld, and designers Charlotte Ronson, Jenni Kayne and Irene Neuwirth have already archived their closets. 1 KENZO LOGO SWEATSHIRT, $275. I live in sweatshirts, so this black Kenzo one pays perfect homage to my Parisian roots. 2 CÉLINE CLASSIC MEDIUM BOX BAG, $24,500. I love exotic skins and use this bag almost every day in dusty salmon python. I rarely wear the color green but this particular green is gorgeous and will complement any outfit. 3 JENNI KAYNE SHOES, $595. I lived in Repettos for years and needed a change, so the pointy silhouette of the D’Orsay was the perfect transition for me. 4 SAINT LAURENT BY HEDI SLIMANE. I just got a Saint Laurent polkadot dress that I wear with chunky Balenciaga boots. It’s the perfect marriage: strong, yet feminine—and a little grunge. • FALL INSPIRATION I try to stay true to my style as seasons transition. I’m attracted to the cut and material of a piece, as opposed to the trend of the moment.

Ever-iconic Hermès marks a glamorous boutique retrofit with an equally elegant, exclusive offering
T
o celebrate the September 3rd reopening of its Beverly Hills flagship, Hermès is hosting a grand soirée and launching an accessories lineup dedicated to the City of Angels. Its roots here, after all, run deep. Hermès first opened on Rodeo Drive in 1972, then moved its shop down the street in 1997 to a jewelbox designed by RDAI. The same Parisian firm is responsible for the boutique’s striking new lines, Carrara marble façade, cube-like windows and party-ready rooftop garden. The 12,000-square-foot interior includes a sculptural spiral staircase and mosaic tiling. On the newly added third level, patrons can stock up on chic Maison wares; ready-to-wear, jewelry and luggage are still housed on floors below. Exclusive to the shop, International Artistic Director Pierre-Alexis Dumas commissioned Benoît-Pierre Emery, artistic director of objects and tableware, to create one of its signature silk scarves. “I felt inspired immediately, as there’s such a strong visual imaginary universe around Los Angeles,” says Emery, whose palm shadows and orangebordered swimming pool design embraces SoCal landscapes and 2013’s “A Sporting Life” motif. This paved the way for other ultra-luxe items such as a canvas-and-leather wine trunk, beach towel, and a white wicker and turquoise leather Kelly Picnic handbag. “There’s an [Hermès] philosophy of fun and pleasure, and it makes a perfect link with the easy-going California lifestyle and hermes.com. • casual spirit.” 434 N. << “Using metallics and glitters in colors like deep blues, rich purples, silvery teals and rusted golds, I applied a stronger density of product on the outer eye fading toward the center of the eyelid for a washed effect,” says makeup artist Diane Kendal. The Briton breaks down the beauty look she created for Thakoon’s fall runway show with Nars’ newest colors (and a few all-time favorites): Apply UBANGI EYE PAINT with a flat brush, painting it on the lid and creating a wing shape to the eye. The paint provides a base for shadows. • Pat the blue color from MARIE-GALANTE DUO EYESHADOW on top of Ubangi in the outer corners. • For effect, apply OUTREMER MATTE EYESHADOW to deepen overall tone. • Add a mix of bronze and rose gold glitter on top. To apply the glitter, dip a synthetic paintbrush in water, then into your glitter color of choice. Press the brush lightly on the lid. • Note: Create the eye before your foundation, as there will be fallen glitter on the face to clean up, which you can do with scotch tape around the fingers. • Finish with curled lashes and a coat of black mascara, a light satiny peach blush (like Sex Appeal) on the apple of the cheeks and a natural lip. narscosmetics.com. •

ho What Wear co-founders Hillary Kerr and Katherine Power are the glamour girls occupying the space between beauty insiders and the makeup obsessed masses. With the launch of Byrdie, Byrdie an online magazine devoted to makeup, skincare, health and hair—Kerr, Power, editor Lexy Lebsack and site director Britt Aboutaleb have created a one-stop shop. “We’re doing monthly editorials with celebrities,” says Aboutaleb of Byrdie’s much anticipated launch last month with a color story on actress Brit Marling. This month, actress Julianne Hough is the feature focus. In addition to the celebrity angle, the L.A. ladies behind Byrdie offer advice from dermatologists, how-to videos, runway trend reports and a variety of wellness information—presented in the same stylish way as WWW and sister shelter site, Domaine. “We consult with doctors and health experts and talk a lot about foods you can eat to help your skin or when you should be juicing and if you should be juicing,” continues Aboutaleb. And no beauty bible is complete without product reviews. Aboutaleb says, “We’re reviewing products as consumers and as regular women in a beautiful, glossy way, and we’re offering tips from hair and makeup artists.” For example, a recent expert opinion detailed more than a handful of ways to wear coral lipstick, like matte and pale retro, while a bi-monthly Get the Look column breaks down every product used to achieve flawless red carpet looks. With three new posts daily and newsy tidbits making sure you never miss a release, Byrdie proves to be a bombshell of a site. byrdie.com. •

Treasure Trove
Kelly Wearstler opens her sublime storage space to decor enthusiasts “My favorite part of the job is combing estate sales for great pieces,” says designer Kelly Wearstler as she walks the aisles of her 10,000-square-foot warehouse. The pieces on the wide metal shelves represent 15 years of scavenging Europe, Asia and the Americas to stock up for future projects and clients. Within the bubble wrap rests some serious finds: a Louis XV commode, important Mid-century studio furniture—Paul Evans, Harvey Probber—and rare vintage lighting like a 1970 Fillipo Perego table lamp. “None of it was catalogued. We didn’t know what we had,” she says. Now, following months of itemization with associate Andrew Spraggs, Wearstler is giving designers and collectors the appointment-only opportunity to visit the building that’s quietly tucked away in an industrial section of Downtown L.A. There, some of the items will remain in her permanent collection, and others will be available for purchase. “Believe it or not, this isn’t [my] only warehouse. Three California women spin deluxe Peruvian alpaca into lovely home textiles
N
orthern California, by way of Peru, has become an unexpected hub for the alpaca trade. Ashley, 30, and Erin Hayes, 28, the sisters behind Sonoma-based Asher Market, year-old purveyor of alpaca pillows and throws, stumbled upon the cashmere-like fiber quite by accident. Between them, they have a law degree, a psychology degree, a photography business, and fashion and culinary training. But all they really want to do is sew. “From sun up to sun down, we made floor cushions, robes, aprons,” explains Ashley, who says their Texan grandmother, an accomplished seamstress, taught them the craft when they were girls. They took their wares to stores like Wonder in Santa Barbara and turned their hobby into a business. Not until Ashley took a trip to South America and scooped up cozy, lightweight Peruvian alpaca blankets did they find their niche. “She brought them home to sell with the things we made, but that’s all anybody wanted,” Erin laughs. Soon after, the pair was back in Peru, designing blankets in bold chevron and diamond prints, and a painterly palette of vibrant colors. They quickly added pillows to the mix. “We blend the alpaca with a little synthetic fiber to make them machine washable and reduce allergic reactions,” she says. “Plus, we design them seasonally, so once a color is gone, it’s gone for good. You’ve got to get them while they’re hot.” From $110; ashermarket.com.

SANDRA JORDAN PRIMA ALPACA, HEALDSBURG
O
n the higher end of the design spectrum, Sandra Jordan offers luxurious and lightweight alpaca by the yard. As a girl in Peru, she learned about the Incan traditions of weaving silken fabric from alpaca fleece. “They called it the gold of the Andes,” says the former creative director of Jordan Winery in Healdsburg, “but the itchy blankets I used to see in the marketplace didn’t match what I’d read about.” The diplomat’s daughter came to the U.S. for college in the ’60s but never lost a connection with her home country. In 2006, when she researched textiles for a redesign of the winery, she stumbled upon a story in Discovery magazine on the DNA of purebred Peruvian alpaca. Several trips to Peru later, her exclusive line, Sandra Jordan Prima Alpaca, was born. Today, she works with a sustainable Peruvian mill that uses highest quality, purebred fibers to create upholstery weight weaves or drapery sheers in 50-plus shades by the yard. Some big names are fans: Designer Jiun Ho used it for his new upholstered furniture line. Michael S. Smith bought the fabric in Peony pink for the Obamas’ White House bedroom. “I got an order for 140 yards of the Mushroom from Kanye West,” she says. “My kids had to tell me who he was.” 707-836-9240; sandrajordan.com.

<< Learning her craft at London’s seminal river Café, Cecconi’s, and eventually soho House properties in the U.K. and now West Hollywood (plus another in L.A., and s.F. in 2014), shelley Armistead lives for gastronomy and family. the south African-born Gm has a b.s. in Nutrition and is devoted to culinary programming and pop-up restaurants for visiting cooks. And beyond 12-hour workdays, this mar Vista resident has a bustling domestic life with husband (soho House WeHo’s executive chef) matt Armistead, and two boys. she’s also active in Jamie Oliver’s Food revolution, a commitment to bring children real, healthy meals. MORNING ROUTINE I wake up at 4:45 a.m. to walk in Venice and stop at Toms (toms.com) at around 6 a.m. they remember my green tea order. It’s a simple thing that we really hold dear as hospitality people. For their integrity, Moon Juice (moonjuice.com). For the avocado smoothie, GTA (gjelina. com). FAMILY TIME Our meal together is breakfast since we can never be home at dinnertime. I make a lot of quinoa, beluga lentils
and rice bowls with proteins in them. Or smoothies. Or we’ll add green garbanzos, collard greens and quinoa to omelettes. I’ll put out a selection of pumpkin and sesame seeds, and seaweed—if they want to, they can try new things. HAppY HELpERS I’m working on a cookbook about how it’s easy to be fast and nutritional. Kids can mix ingredients and connect to the kitchen process. We store everything in glass, and I think that’s a great way to learn what the lentils and grains look like. EATING EXpLORATION The Seabirds in Costa mesa (seabirdstruck.com). And one space that needs to be on everyone’s radar is Nick’s Cove in tomales bay (nickscove.com). Here, you don’t need to drive or fly very far to experience incredible food. sohohousewh.com. •

Former Water Grill toque David LeFevre was something of a pioneer when he decamped to Manhattan Beach in 2011 to open M.B. Post. Today, from his new establishment to other chefs’ nascent spots (try Circa and Little Sister), a wave of eateries has shifted the tides and tastes of this seaside locale. THE HALF-SHELL At funky Fishing With Dynamite, David LeFevre’s recently debuted oyster bar, it’s worth the wait for a gin-sherry cocktail, sweet malpeques, a light clam chowder, and grilled octopus with date-tomato ragu. Stick around for the key lime pie. 1148 Manhattan Ave., M.B., 310-893-6299; eatfwd.com. BACON-CHEDDAR BUTTERMILK BISCUITS With a Michelin-starred chef behind them, you’d be remiss to skip M.B. n the 1980s, when “nobody knew what the hell charmoula and romesco was, and none of us was in it for fame or glory or cookware dreams,” former Chez Panisse chef Joyce Goldstein opened Square One—among the first S.F. restaurants to adjust menus daily and pair wines by the glass. “It never dawned on anybody how big the change was— to go from a yearly to seasonal to daily menu; how open kitchens affected service,” Goldstein says. And when the time came for a definitive record of California cooking, UC Press knew the exact person to pen it. After almost 200 interviews with chefs, critics, food artisans, iconoclast winemakers and restaurateurs, the doyenne has tracked a 30-year shift in design, casualization and style with Inside the California Food Revolution. Goldstein dissects tastes like mesclun, raspberry vinegar and Laura Chenel goat cheese. There’s Sally Schmitt’s French Laundry—15 years before Thomas Keller; Acme’s founder baking bread in his college dorm; and chanterelle mushrooms coming to market. “I’ve written 26 cookbooks, and I’ve never tackled food history,” Goldstein explains from her S.F. kitchen. “But I thought, I’ve been here since 1960, I’ve seen the whole thing, and they’ll take my call. If I’d been some young reporter, they’d never talk the way they did.” So is it really a revolution? Goldstein thinks so. “To have modern art on the walls at Michael’s? And no tuxedos? That’s a revolution.”

Promised Land An entertainment executive heads to the vineyards of Rutherford

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP Steve
McPherson. The Joy, $35. 2009 Promise Cabernet Sauvignon, $225. Harvest on Winston Hill. Promise ages in new French oak barrels.
n 1976, a young Steve McPherson moved to Paris to attend the American School, where his father was headmaster and field trips took students to places such as Champagne. The budding oenophile went on to study wine—with a successful Hollywood career in between. (As president of ABC/Disney television, he launched the likes of “Lost” and “Desperate Housewives.”) Standing in the middle of a Rutherford vineyard in 2004, McPherson, now 48, vowed to Jennifer, his future wife, that he’d fulfill his winemaking dream. He sent a bottle of Italian wine and a letter to Rich Frank of Rutherford’s esteemed Frank Family Wines. The friends “hashed out” a partnership and a vineyard source. The 100% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes selected for Promise Wine grow on a western-facing slope of loamy volcanic stone—right on Frank’s estate. In crafting a product of 96-point finesse, the Pacific Palisades-based entrepreneur understood the learning curve. “We love Amarones from Italy and wanted to emulate those…but we realized after the 2004 harvest that it’s so much about the terroir,” he says. “A cab grape from Italy is different growing than in Napa.” With such Rutherford pedigree comes potential for cellaring of 2009 Promise, whose allocations goes out this month. McPherson has also given time to new projects like The Joy rosé. This fresh wine of pinot noir grapes is a marked departure. “It has taken us a while to be comfortable with one year versus four before the consumer sees it,” he says. Were he stranded on a desert island, McPherson insists Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche would be his last bottle. Of course, choosing a Burgundy sidesteps the issue of choosing between Promise and The Joy. “They’re like our children,” he says. “Our girls are so different, and I love both of them.” promisewine.com. •

“Boutique” wine takes on new meaning this season with Cliff Lede’s offering of 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon, co-created with fashion designer Derek Lam. The S.F. native visited the Napa Valley vineyards to blend juice from its flagship Poetry Vineyards. Says Lam of the process, “While dressing is very different from enjoying a bottle of wine, the desire to enjoy each is similar.” Yountville-based proprietor Cliff Lede considers Poetry by Derek Lam a new beginning. He says the 47 cases are “the first in our new ‘capsule collection’ series. “Each year we will work with a leading innovator in his or her field—future releases could bring Poetry by… an internet mogul, a performance artist or a rock star. Stay tuned.” cliffledevineyards.com.

ilan is practical, always dynamic and continuously changing. It is full of nuances, and austere like its buildings that often hide beautiful gardens behind their gates. I think that Milan is one of the most important international Fashion Weeks for the variety and wealth of what it offers. I present both collections [Giorgio Armani and Emporio Armani] here because I think it’s important to do so. We should all commit to bringing back energy and dynamic force to the city—like it was in the early 1980s, which created the Made in Italy phenomenon. Milan has nothing to envy of any other fashion capital. Of this I am convinced—and in my own small way, I am committed every day in this regard. PLAY Milan is a discreet and coy city. Beautiful views hide behind façades. Via Borgonuovo, both secretive and stylish, is my favorite. I like to stroll around Corso Garibaldi and Via Brera. Corso Garibaldi is a street with buildings that tell of the old Milan from which new skyscrapers stand out—a truly unique contrast. • Of all the museums, my favorite is the Poldi Pezzoli Museum for the uniqueness and variety of its collections. On choosing Singapore— Chanel’s maiden voyage to Asia—Karl Lagerfeld said, “I haven’t been back in 25 years, and everyone told me that this place has changed so much. I wanted to see it for myself, and the best way is to do a show here.” The first night premiered Lagerfeld’s Once Upon a Time… Deauville 1913 on the lawn of the famous Raffles Hotel. The following evening, 800 guests gathered at Loewen Cluster, an upscale residential area that formerly housed a nutmeg plantation and barracks. The presentation showcased long and lean skirt/jacket looks equally mindful of the tropical climate and the rich culture. Having spent four years in Singapore with my father
while growing up, I was also excited to see three decades of change. A melting pot of Chinese, Malaysian, Indian and Western cultures, the city-state has become a mecca for foreign investment, magnificent skyscrapers, luxury shopping—and world-famous street food. Bulgari jewel is as recognizable as a Chanel suit,” art historian Eveline Schlumberger once wrote of the Roman company with Greek heritage in a 1963 article for Connaissance des Arts.. Andy Warhol declared the company “a museum of contemporary art.” “Bulgari was able to tap into our culture and come up with something people wanted,” remarks Martin Chapman, co-curator of the de Young exhibition “The Art of Bulgari: La Dolce Vita & Beyond, 1950-1990,” which includes almost 150 pieces—some donated by collectors Jennifer Tilly, Linda Chaiken and Dede Wilsey. Breaking away from the tradition of diamonds arranged in garlands and other organic compositions, Bulgari chose geometry. Each decade stands out: Jeweled flower brooches suspend from springs, causing them to “tremble” and sparkle—that’s the ’50s. Jumbles of bold, candy-colored stones, sensuous snake bracelets paved in enamel—the ’60s. Look for sautoirs, Egyptian motifs, stars and stripes, and ancient coins in heavy gold—now think ’70s. 1980s? Recall the Parentesi collection: architectural bracelets, almost computer-inspired but purportedly shaped after Roman curbs. “They looked to their heritage and came up with something fresh and bold and new,” adds Chapman. The personalities who wore these pieces equally fascinate. In the ’50s, socialites gravitated toward the house. fter the death of their grandfather in 1996, Sascha Rice and Hilary Armstrong spent more than seven years interviewing, producing and fund-raising for the new documentary California State of Mind: The Legacy of Pat Brown—to understand who he really was. The story of Edmund Gerald “Pat” Brown, Sr. is an American dream tale. Born in San Francisco, the son of a man who owned a gambling room, Brown never attended college but rose to become California Attorney General, and Governor of California from 1959 to 1967. The sisters’ mother, Kathleen Brown, ran unsuccessfully in 1994. Jerry Brown, their uncle, is re-elected to the seat last year. “In my family, a politician is a public servant and someone who dedicated his life to serving— someone who was a leader and willing to be criticized,” says Rice, the award-winning co-writer/director/producer. Rice asked her sister, who co-founded Cow Hollow Preschool and raises funds for various charities, to executive produce the documentary. “When a task is in front of her, she’s unstoppable,” remarks Rice. While Armstrong corralled the Annenberg Foundation, Edison International, PG&E and others, Rice began roping in political touchstones. Former governors Arnold Schwarzenegger, Gray Davis and Pete Wilson; journalist Tom Brokaw; Senator Dianne Feinstein; Representative/Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi; and historian Kevin Starr all sat down and shared their thoughts. Brown, after all, was celebrated for laying 1,000 miles of freeways and enacting the California Master Plan for Higher Education, a bill that expanded the Cal State and UC system. We really have a ying-yang thing going on.” “The rest is organized chaos,” she says of their Midcentury Modern styled mansion—a shift from their previous home, which was French Polynesian. “The girls have creative spaces where they can be inspired, play and dream,” and she says the family can always be found in the kitchen. “It’s the heart of the house.” Alba, now 32, met Warren nine years ago on set of the Fantastic Four. They have just celebrated their fifth wedding anniversary; she says she “happens to have the best husband in the world. Cash bought me a necklace with a wooden ball on it,” she says, starting to draw it in mid-air. “He always gives me gifts according to the year we are together. Five is wood. It was really sweet.” She says the strength of their relationship isn’t about sustaining romance [though he appears to be trying] but rather about communication. “It’s the biggest thing,” she insists. “A relationship takes on a different life completely when you have kids and work. You have to make adult time to reconnect.” Alba thanks her parents for this. Her Mexican father, Mark, and Danish/French mother, Catherine, free the couple up for date nights. “They are very hands-on grandparents,” she says while crediting them with a life-long relationship to emulate: “They have been together since they were 17 and 18—and are still best friends.” Both Alba and Warren are Californians. Her parents still live in Pomona, where she was born. She went to Claremont High School and began acting classes at 12. Clearly headstrong, she left school at 16 and worked her way from small television roles—“The Secret World of Alex Mack” and “Beverly Hills, 90210”—to leads in Flipper and her break-out role in the James Cameron helmed series “Dark Angel.”
Film followed in every genre; from drama (Michael Winterbottom’s The Killer Inside Me) to comedy (Little Fockers) and action (Spy Kids 4). She is best known, however, as muse to Robert Rodriguez. Their fifth collaboration, Machete Kills, will be released this month. Here, she reprises her role as Special Agent Sartana Rivera. In early 2014, she resurrects exotic dancer Nancy Callahan in Rodriguez’s sequel to Sin City. Point being, the director has made Alba both international pin-up and a woman endlessly on People’s Most Beautiful list. Looking from the outside in, one could excuse her for believing her own mythology. To her credit, she doesn’t. Instead, she has used her traction to found The Honest Company with environmental specialist Christopher Gavigan. This eco-savvy online venture sells toxin-free products for the household—everything from dishwasher soap to diapers. She stumbled on the idea when she was pregnant with Honor. “I had an allergic reaction to a baby laundry detergent,” she explains, “and when I did the research, I found out there are toxic chemicals in personal care and cleaning products in the U.S. that are not government-tested. And so, I knew we needed a company that is a toxin-free, transparent, effective and an inexpensive family brand.” To put her ethos to paper, the actress published The Honest Life: Living Naturally and True to You (Rodale) this past March. “For the book, I wanted to describe realistic, healthy alternatives that anyone can apply. You don’t have to eat all organic. You don’t have to be all yoga, granola, hemp; cream and beige. I’m not that chick. It’s about how to live in a healthy way without being extreme.” A multi-tasking matriarch, she is currently juggling motherhood and sourcing organic lip balm while also shooting flims. The latest is How To Make Love Like An Englishman, in Vancouver. Starring Pierce Brosnan (she laughs of the title, “he knows the answer to that question”), the comedy is about a Cambridge poetry professor re-evaluating his life of Byronic excess. Her other project, dark comedy A.C.O.D., hits theaters this autumn. She and Adam Scott play children of divorce who have unknowingly become subjects of a psychological survey. She loved A.C.O.D. because, she says, “It asks the question: When do you stop blaming your parents and take responsibility for your own actions?” continUed on paGe 240

N
owadays, the genetically blessed among us are more likely to talk about their favorite yoga guru and the best green juice in town rather than their latest all-nighter in Paris. Case in point: Angela Lindvall. The 34-year-old Kansas City native and long-time face of DKNY and Victoria’s Secret has helped maintain a nearly 20-year career this way. Before her eldest son, Dakota, 11, was born (her youngest, Sebastian, is 8), she became an eco-activist. And five years ago, she started detoxing with the help of doctors and practitioners, which has literally changed her life. “I learned that we have such a symbiotic relationship with our environment,” she says from her rustic Topanga Canyon home. “What we breathe and eat enters our body and can affect our health in ways that are really surprising. If our bodies are toxic, then we make toxic decisions.” She even started an environmental nonprofit that promoted sustainability among young people. But she worried that wasn’t enough. The problem with acquiring all of this knowledge, whether it’s about heavy-metal toxicity in the blood or climate change, is that it can make people feel powerless. “I have what I like to call environmental anxiety disorder,” laughs Lindvall. “I start to worry that I can’t do enough, that it’s too big of a problem for me to handle. Then I realized I had to start at kind of a micro-level—with myself, my family and friends—and then to open that up and help make meaningful changes for a few people at a time.” Lindvall’s solution was to open her Topanga property, a small farm that she describes as her own “little Utopia,” to guests as a holistic retreat four times a year. Facilitated by Bio Sanctuary and its medical director, Genita M. Mason H.H.P., N.C., biochemist—visitors can partake in a green juice cleanse and gluten-dairy-sugarmeat-free meals, in between yoga, live blood analysis, infrared sauna breaks, life coaching, hiking and other health-promoting activities. “It’s always been my dream to put my roots down in a place like this,” Lindvall says. “It feels like the country, but it’s close to Los Angeles and just a few minutes from the water. Lately, I’ve been running on the beach and jumping in the waves. If I could live like this for the rest of my life, I’d be one happy lady.” Sept. 21-30; 877-285-9266; biosanctuary.com/ malibu-california-biosanctuary. •

enice-based model and swimwear designer Tori Praver has taken on her biggest project: sevenmonth-old daughter, Ryan Mahina Fuller. Praver, 26, is simultaneously preparing for swim’s largest tradeshow in Miami, planning her upcoming nuptials to longtime boyfriend, pro-surfer Danny Fuller and caring for their newborn. But, the laid-back Hawaiian beach girl isn’t stressed—instead, she radiates ease and balance. With her tanned athletic legs, thick blond hair and impossibly bright smile, Praver has wholesome, yet sexy looks suggesting a modern-day Christie Brinkley. She was discovered at a Costco in Hawaii when she was 13; by 20, she was posing for Sports Illustrated and was the face of Guess. In 2009, she transitioned from model to swimwear designer; creating an eponymous line of flattering ruched silhouettes. For Resort, she’ll unveil a small capsule of ready-to-wear pieces—“beach coverups that you could wear to dinner,” she says of the maxi skirt, kimono and oversized men’s shirt that make up part of the collection. This October, the couple will wed beneath a tree strewn with leis, on a bluff in the North Shore of Kauai. Though they currently call Venice Beach home, the family eventually plans to return to the island. “You move back after you accomplish what you want to do,” she explains of their timeline, “and we still have a lot going on.” toripraverswimwear.com. •

Pamela Skaist-Levy infused some much-needed levity and playful irreverence to her historic Beverly Hills estate By cHriStine Lennon PHotograPHed By LiSa romerein

was so scared of this house,” says Pamela Skaist-Levy while sitting in the media room of her expansive 1930s home. Built by noted Los Angeles developer Burton E. Green, who also constructed The Beverly Hills Hotel, the estate appears on the local register of historic properties, and occupies a sweeping corner lot bordered by a towering hedge and concealed by a massive gate. Beyond the imposing stone façade, the seven bedrooms and grand public rooms within are every bit a construct of formal scale. “It was so dark and intimidating. There were three layers of curtains on every window. And it was in Beverly Hills.” Its history is as dramatic as the two centauride statues that flank the front entrance. Merv Griffin was a former owner, and it’s said that the proper garden on the north side of the lawn was one of Nancy Reagan’s favorite spots for clipping roses. SkaistLevy, 50, whose long, blond hair has ends expertly dipped in blue dye, is Southern Californian to her very core, but she and the former First Lady don’t exactly share the same tastes. SkaistLevy is one-half of the founding duo behind Juicy Couture and now, Skaist-Taylor. She and Gela Nash-Taylor have been business partners and best friends since they met working at L.A.’s trendy Diane Merrick boutique in the late ’80s. “We were filling in for a friend who happened to be in rehab,” she says, drily. “How’s that for an L.A. story?” Skaist-Levy and Nash-Taylor started Juicy in 1995, and their popular velour tracksuit, replete with its signature logo on the tush, has been credited with putting California casual on the map. Though the brand was acquired in 2003 by Fifth & Pacific, formerly Liz Claiborne, Inc., the friends (who are often spotted wearing matching over-the-knee boots and micro mini-dresses to events) still embody the Juicy legacy. SkaistTaylor, the pair’s newly launched collection of affordable dresses and separates, is a mature incarnation of their style, more grown-up glam than laidback loungewear. The brand represents their personal evolution from fun-loving party girls to successful businesswomen. Skaist-Levy grew up as a “kooky kid” who worshipped surf and skate culture. She found work as a costume designer on small projects and independent films before Juicy. She’s unapologetic about her eccentricities—particularly her love of the ’70s in the San Fernando Valley. “I do. I love the Valley. I loved growing up there,” she says. Her husband, director/producer Jeff Levy, grew up on the other side of the hill. “He’s from Beverly Hills, so buying the house was his idea.” Skaist-Levy agreed to take the risk, realizing that the topography of the lot surrounding the estate was unusual and special. >>

<< “It’s so green here because there’s an underground stream,” she says. “And even though the house was terrifying, I knew the forest would save me.” The greenery to which she refers to is a stand of pine trees at the back of the lot that provides shade and privacy (both luxuries in high demand here). Tucked among those trees is a small cabin with a wide deck. Original to the property, the redwood structure currently serves as the family clubhouse— site of an occasional yoga class and a more than occasional gathering. Its very existence negates the potential stiffness of the main domicile. “They entertain here a lot and the parties are always very elegant, but never formal or stuffy,” says Peter Dunham, the English-born, West Hollywood-based interior designer the Levys hired to help with the decor. “I was talking to Hamish Bowles at Vogue about the house—how intimidated I was by it—and he was the one who told me to call Peter [Dunham]. He knew [Peter] was the only one who would get it,” says SkaistLevy of Dunham’s ability to navigate the two worlds— contemporary and traditional—with equal ease. Dunham, who had considered the property for a previous client before the Levys purchased it, realized the home’s floor plans were stashed beneath his desk when Skaist-Levy called. The two of them masterminded an aesthetic that Dunham has described as Duchess of Windsor-meets-Iron Maiden: ornate and ladylike with an irreverent spin. Skaist-Levy has a strong sense of style, but Dunham’s most critical contribution was his ability to make the sprawling rooms feel more intimate. Before the couple moved in, Levy suggested that they have the interiors painted a clean, uncomplicated white and remove all those heavy curtains in an attempt to “open it up” and make sense of the scale. But even then, a design scheme proved elusive. The family’s previous home, in the Valley of course, was dramatic, modern and not entirely child friendly. The couple’s 12-year-old son, Noah, was four when they decided to move. “I mean, there was a pool under the living room,” laughs Skaist-Levy, explaining, “you could swim from the living room to the kitchen. I’m sure the other parents were a little wary of sending their kids over to play.” And even though Skaist-Levy has an allegiance to Southern California-cool, she also has a not-sosecret girlie side, and has been acquiring antiques and accessories like candelabras and pedigreed vases on Friday afternoon shopping trips with Nash-Taylor. That meshes well with Dunham. “My English side comes out most in my design work in what I call the ‘architecture of furniture,’” he says. “I like the room to have different areas, if continued on page 240

“Peter [Dunham] introduced me to the world of wallpaper,” says Levy. “I always loved the layered look, and I’m always drawn to color and pattern. But it didn’t happen all at once. It evolved over time.” oPPosIte An ivory chair upholstered in Claremont fabric and trim and a reflective screen, both custom; Dunham created discrete seating areas within larger rooms to give the space a sense of “mystery” and to let it “unfold more slowly.”
