The Vacheron Constantin Manufacture of Haute Horlogerie proudly presents a new masterpiece of femininity: a creation in pink gold blending a delicate, refined, and elegant design with a sophisticated movement.
Since its founding - and even more so since 1889, the year of its first ladies’ wristwatches - the Maison Vacheron Constantin has maintained an unwavering connection with women. Its sophisticated pieces have seduced countless icons. Poets, novelists, Broadway stars, and figures of the silver screen; all of which gloriously tell its story. A story that, like them, is unique and rare.
The Patrimony Contemporaine Small Model reveals several layers of elegance: the delicate gesture of a woman’s wrist, the first automatic Vacheron Constantin ladies watch movement (stamped with the Hallmark of Geneva), and its refined design, both contemporary and timeless.

T
he phrase “Bright Young Things” once referred to a group of dilettantes and
socialites in 1920s London who were on a continuous circuit of soirees. I would
venture to say that this phrase should be updated and modified. When I think of BYTs in our midst, I think of women doing extraordinary things
with their lives. These women are focused on what they are going to do in the world,
how they can live their lives in a meaningful way. Take our cover subject, Gia Coppola. A scion of the famous family, she has begun
her destined craft at an early age. Having written, directed and produced her first feature film before she turned 24 is a good sign that she is just getting started. In addition to that, she has her own wine label coming out this month, and she is already working on her next movie project. We were honored to visit her at her family’s winery and take a peek into her world—in beautiful Napa—including a visit from Grandpa (the legend himself!). Among the vines, it is her inner beauty and strength that shine the brightest. Our portfolio of Los Angeles mothers and their children is a perfect tribute to Mother’s Day this month. The women profiled in the soon-to-be-released book The Glow are all accomplished
Founders Letter
artists and entrepreneurs, but what makes it even more poignant is that we present them in their favorite role—mom.
And while raising children to rule the world (or at least to make it a better place), it doesn’t hurt if one rocks great clothes, accessories and even a jewel or two along the way. I would never claim to say personal style has to suffer to be taken seriously. There’s a lot to be said for how many doors a well-dressed woman can open…especially in this season’s pretty pastels (captured in our fashion portfolio, “Pale Fire”). Speaking of a soft palette, the Brentwood home that über-decorator Michael S. Smith just completed is beyond perfection. Warmth and elegance emanates from every corner, which is all perfectly orchestrated by Smith himself. And that’s what I think is the common thread among our featured subjects, that they are orchestrating their lives with purpose and direction. No dilettantes here…just bright, bright things!

She’s lovely, and I could see her director’s eye at work throughout,” says Silverlake-based hairstylist Charles McNair, who lent his talents to “The Talented Miss Coppola” (p.92). Gowdy recently finished a short film for Oakland-based wild fragrance company Juniper Ridge. C SPOTS • Joshua Tree • General Store in Outer Sunset • Bolinas

Bronze and turquoise “little sculptures” from Lisa Eisner are designed to be layered.
isa Eisner spent many years collecting studio works from Tina Chow and Alexander Calder to add to her stockpile of Native American pieces. “Jewelry has always been my thing,” she says...and not tennis bracelets and pearl earrings, we’re talking about “big jewelry.” Despite the fact that diamonds are her birthstone (April), she has very few in her collection, opting instead for colorful “little sculptures.” This spring, the multihyphenate (tastemaker/muse/photographer/mother/ wife) unveils a collection of bronze jewelry with turquoise, with a few pieces incorporating black jade and handmade feathers. “Bronze is a beautiful metal that a lot of people don’t use. It was popular with California artisans in the ’70s. I would love to work with gold, but to make one of my pieces in gold would cost the same as a house,” Eisner explains. She also loves the way the high-quality metal patinas from natural body oils. As for the turquoise, “I found this family-owned mine in Arizona, and it was really important that I work with American turquoise instead of fake Chinese turquoise.” She handpicks individual stones and designs around them—rendering each creation unique. The collection is a mix of Native American and California hippie influences. “I had this dream of driving up PCH to Big Sur and finding an old A-frame shack. I’d walk in and find this guy who makes handmade jewelry. It doesn’t exist,” says Eisner. Perhaps this is the next best thing. From $1,500; available at Maxfield.

Ouest Coast Girl Jordane Crantelle, Chanel’s glamorous golden girl, lives out her American dream BY KELSEY M C KINNON PHOTOGRAPHED BY JESSICA SAMPLE
As much as Jordane Crantelle exudes Parisian it-girl cool (Chanel bags, chocolate croissants and French-tinged English), the model turned PR doyenne is at once a sun-kissed, blond-tressed, laid-back Cali-girl. It was, in fact, that storied French brand that brought Crantelle to the West Coast—she’s done PR for Chanel for the past 10 years after an introduction from a photographer led to an internship. She’s responsible for special projects around the world, from fi nding celebrity ambassadors in Asia to partnering with artisans like Maison Michel and Barrie Knitwear. Last year, knowing her affi nity for the city (she had been visiting two or three times every year for the past 10 years), the company asked if she would like to spend more time in the L.A. office. “I said, ‘Oui, defi nitely!’ I moved out here a month later, found a house in four days and was like, ‘I’m not going anywhere else…ever.’ I loved it immediately.” >>

CLOCKWISE Crantelle in her backyard wearing a Brunello Cucinelli shirt. In her closet wearing a Chanel dress, Maiyet belt and bangle. A Chanel clutch. Crantelle’s mother, a naturopath, painted the Japanese calligraphy. A few prized pairs.
WH (Spotlight) << The sun-filled bungalow on the edge of Venice is a reflection of Crantelle’s uncomplicated realness—she’s someone who responds to quality but doesn’t fuss over the nuances of matching place settings. Trunks and trunks of clothing (a lot of Chanel), records (her friend Cat Power is a favorite), Japanese calligraphy paintings from her mother and original photography from Karl Lagerfeld were shipped. In the living room is Lagerfeld’s photograph of models in classic tweed skirt suits holding Chanel longboards in Biarritz. “I said, ‘If I am going to bring one thing to California, this is it.’ I’m creative; I love film, art, poetry. This is the reason I went into PR. I realized this was a place where I could meet and have relationships with really amazing artists.” To that end, she’s also set up a home office, where she’s launching a full-scale creative agency. In addition to Chanel, clients include the luxury swimwear brand Eres, Esteban Cortazar, Maiyet and Twins for Peace. The latter, a one-for-one sneaker business founded by seventh-generation Hermès brothers Maxime and Alexandre Mussard, “is like the Toms of France. I feel like fashion should be more socially conscious,” she says, like a true Angeleno, adding, “I want to have a production arm of my company too. I would love, for example, to direct a short movie.” Pourquoi pas? •

Stepping out From the red carpet to the streets of Silverlake, Sandra Choi makes Jimmy Choo for (almost) everyone BY GENEVIEVE BAHRENBURG
While Sandra Choi has a degree from Central Saint Martins, you could say that Jimmy Choo’s new creative director actually comes from the “school” of Choo. Choi’s uncle is Jimmy Choo (who has since sold his share in the company), and she began working with the brand in 1996, shortly after the label became synonymous with red-carpet style. Today Choi takes a more versatile approach, building on the duality of the women’s line with sleek leather pastel pumps, color-blocked modern evening heels and playful floral slip-ons. “I’m inspired by London style, how eclectic and expressive it is with its rock-and-roll influences—not overly polished or contrived,” says Choi. She also hoped that vision would translate to the retail environment. She unveils a David Collins Studio redesign of the Beverly Hills flagship store—the first of many locations to be revamped. “I wanted our new space to combine the detail of a haute couture salon with the intimacy of a fantasy closet.” Satin gold, rosa egeo pink marble and mink velvets add a soft texture, while oyster stone and mother-of-pearl chevron floors create soft drama. A special made-to-order program will launch in conjunction with the opening of the new space, not to mention an exclusive on the iconic Candy Blah Blah bag. 240 N. Chanel’s signature Coco Mademoiselle perfume takes on a fresh look this spring with a new cinematic campaign. The latest short—which comes 23 years after Jean-Paul Goude’s “L’Espirit de Chanel,” starring Vanessa Paradis as a caged songbird—is directed by Joe Wright (Atonement, Pride & Prejudice) and features London-born beauty Keira Knightley, the face of the label since 2007. Knightley, as Coco Chanel, and Danila Kozlovsky meet at a futuristic Chanel launch party and later cross paths on the Seine—all in a matter of 60 seconds. Like its predecessors, the commercial spotlights the seductive allure of the Oriental scent, which blends hints of orange, bergamot, floral and spice, as well as the irresistibility of the woman who wears it. “Coco Chanel is timeless,” says Knightley. “Her creations precisely express her free spirit.” chanel.com.

Owens tunics and high-top sneakers. She’s also one of the world’s youngest senior kundalini teachers—her spiritual name bestowed by the late Yogi Bhajan himself, the man responsible for bringing kundalini yoga to the West. Guru Jagat’s mission is to bring all these ancient teachings—beauty secrets included—into the mainstream. In December, she also launched RA MA Records, a recording label that pairs kundalini mantras with punk rock, rap, reggae, electronic and other musical styles. Famed ’80s girl band The Go-Gos are among artists slated for the label’s next release. Kundalini yoga is gaining popularity worldwide as an effective antiaging technology with its combination of physical postures, breathing techniques, mantras, mudras and meditation to strengthen the nervous and glandular systems. Not surprisingly, Los Angeles is the epicenter, with kundalini studios Yoga West, Golden Bridge, Nine Treasures Yoga and now the staggeringly popular RA MA Institute for Applied Yogic Science and Technology, which has become de rigueur among Venice hipsters, hard-core yogis, athletes and celebrities who follow the studio’s master teachers. While the spiritual element is key, kundalini is not religion-based—it’s a nondenominational and measurable technology for uplifting the body, mind and spirit. Harvard Medical School is currently conducting a five-year study examining the effects of yoga and meditation on chronic stress. One test group practices kundalini yoga, chosen for its emphasis on meditation. Guru Jagat smiles and shrugs: “Yogis have known this for thousands of years,” she says, “but it’s very helpful to have science behind it.” After an inspirational, albeit spicy talk (Guru Jagat’s delivery is lively, to say the least) and an intense yoga set to balance the “tattvas” (elements of earth, water, fire, air and ether), more timetested beauty advice is revealed—cold-water showers to flush the capillaries, specific asanas (postures) for weight control and youth, hair washing with oils instead of shampoo, massaging the skin with ghee, yogurt baths, recipes for golden milk made with turmeric (a natural anti-inflammatory), and the special spice-infused yogi tea that is a staple in the kundalini beauty regime. Four hours later and already feeling uplifted, the group as a whole is looking decidedly different. We’ve swapped our neuroses for the kind of radiance you can’t find in a bottle or at the dermatologist’s office. •

he biggest yogic beauty secret of all is selfesteem,” proclaims Guru Jagat in opening remarks to 50 women, who sit mat to mat on a Sunday afternoon at the RA MA Institute for Applied Yogic Science and Technology in Venice. “If you really think you are too fat, too thin, too old, too whatever, that’s your projection, and that’s exactly how people will see you.” The idea that our neuroses can age us prematurely is news to some but an obvious truth to the growing group of regulars in attendance at RA MA’s women’s workshops. Ageless yoginis dressed in flowing white cotton (white increases radiance), and with skin that quite literally appears to glow, guide a high-energy group of 20- to 60-yearolds, here to practice kundalini yoga, replenish with health elixirs and collect ancient yogic beauty prescriptions as doled out by RA MA’s ravishingly radiant founder, 34-year-old Guru Jagat. an a stationary item be in motion? Before answering, examine a Miri Mara vase. Its shapes are so compelling that one’s vision can’t help but trail its pattern around the vessel. “Texture,” Fatmir “Miri” Mara explains, “it really speaks, gives movement. Like velocity.” Perhaps this is what Diana Vreeland meant when she said, “The eye has to travel.” Mara’s effects are diverse: geometric patterns; a line playing with shadow; weathered snakeskin of layered glazes; and a kind of hypnotic, smooth matte finish begging to be touched. These surfaces and silhouettes play into a balance of extremes. Angular vases with decoration worthy of an African mask reflect primitive, earthy stoneware. It could be mistaken for centuries-old bronze. Conversely, there’s simple, solid geometry channeling the modern. Two plates stand upright and parallel with a chamber for florals in between— reminiscent of the Bauhaus’ triangle-circle-square. And some series take the middle path; his sleek interpretation of an ancient Greek Cycladic visage, for one. Ceramics is a relatively nascent passion of Mara’s— and not his first. His formative career was fashion: five years at Alta Moda in Rome with Renato Balestra and the next 19 in Milan prêt-à-porter, designing and consulting for manufacturers including Cadette and Ghe-
rardini with partner, now husband, Rick Perkins. Twelve years ago, at 42, they retired in Santa Barbara. “The creative part was suffering more and more,” he says, “so it was time to leave.” Mara’s galvanizing experience was seeing a documentary about Japanese pottery. Ceramics had never interested him before, yet he signed up for a class at Santa Barbara City College, where he’d been taking art classes. “I loved it from the first day,” he recalls. His structures could not be accomplished on a wheel, so he preferred to sketch pieces and hand-build. Soon enough, what began as a hobby turned into a business. A low point hit in 2008 when they lost everything in the Tea Fire, including his entire body of ceramic works (about 80 pieces) and his cahiers. The collage journals contained the sketches, cutout photos, phrases and pictures of museum pieces that fuel his oeuvre, from those Cycladic heads to the engravings on Italian banknotes that inspire many of his etched surfaces. He immediately began to search for new creative juice. He says of journaling: “[What] you start to see in a museum or a piece of architecture or a piece of a mechanical part can really get in the back CONTINUED ON PAGE 128

Crafting comfort Joanne Zorkendorfer, a former design director at IDEO, found her calling in decidedly nonindustrial elements: Otomi, the vibrant embroidered motifs of flora and fauna based on rock paintings in central Mexican caves. Immediately drawn to the textiles’ modern, graphic quality, the San Franciscan sought a more contemporary format than bedspreads to show off their look and color. A friend (a textile historian and collector) connected her with a group of embroiderers in Tenago, and after three years of development, from finding the right foam-poly fiber filling to sourcing custom-dyed zippers and leather in Napa Valley, Zorkendorfer had prototyped unique low-lying daybed loungers, each of which requires three to four months to produce. It’s fitting that McKinnon and Harris has opened a Los Angeles showroom dedicated to enduring beauty; after all, estate and garden furniture is intended to weather the elements. In the four skylit galleries, there’s old French limestone underfoot, strong rift-sawn oak and a trove of stone antiquities such as 16th-century columns flanking the entry, a noble second-century Togatus and stylobate-platform marble lions. Mirrors for depth and a profound lack of color—rather, a rigorous commitment to endless shades of white—pay subtle homage to British decorator Syrie Maugham’s timeless aesthetic.

anta Barbara has two of the world’s best surf shops— each home to legendary shapers representing a different era of surfing. Reynolds (“Renny”) Yater designed a classic longboard called the Yater Spoon back in the ’60s, and his shapes are available for sale at The Beach House (805-963-1281). And Channel Islands Surfboards (805-966-7213), a brand started by my friend Al Merrick, whose cutting-edge designs are ridden by the best surfers in the world, including 11-time world champ Kelly Slater. If you are into old-school carving, check out my personal model there called The Warp. • Mate Gallery recently opened in Montecito, merging New England beach style with a vintage California vibe—books, prints, furniture, accessories, vintage clothing and original photography by Matt Albiani. 805-895-6283 • Start at the bird refuge on the edge of Montecito and take a leisurely stroll along Cabrillo Boulevard, past the zoo, the volleyball courts on East Beach, and keep heading along the palm-lined boulevard to the tip of Stearns Wharf. Shaun Stop in at the Ty Warner Sea Center and Tomson see the jellyfish, and catch a ride on Lil’ Toot, the diminutive ferry that takes you through the beautiful harbor and drops you off right in front of Brophy Bros. A frosty Corona and lime, a dozen oysters and a slab of local fish will fortify you for the walk home. 805-966-4418. • Drive past the Santa Barbara Mission and its rose gardens and make your way up Alameda Padre Serra to Santa Barbara’s Riviera and the revered and recently renovated Belmond El Encanto hotel. Dine on the balcony at sunset and you might think you are in a more beautiful version of Monaco or Cape Town. 805-845-5800. • At Montecito Cafe Bar, a little spot formerly owned by Charlie Chaplin, order a pomegranate martini with Grey Goose, a juicy cheeseburger and french fries. 805-969-3392. • Denim czar Gene Montesano re-created his version of a New York-style steakhouse, Lucky’s, with a West Coast vibe. Sit by the window in the bar and start with super-jumbo shrimp and then the world’s finest lamb chops with spinach and frites. The French martini gets shaken at your table and will simultaneously freeze and melt your brain. Via Vai has the best pizza on the planet, all cooked in a classic wood-burning oven. Order a crisp pinot grigio and a thincrust pizza seafood combo as an appetizer from one of the proud Roman waiters. Then go for the ultimate this side of Venice: spaghetti al coccio con frutti di mare, a rich stew of seafood in a spicy tomato sauce, cooked in a clay dish and covered with pastry. • If you have a child, the Santa Barbara Zoo is the most important stop in town. A little diesel train takes you around the entire zoo in about 10 minutes, past the toucans, condors, gorillas, giraffes and lions. Don’t miss the pair of magnificent snow leopards. 805-962-5339. • A short walk along Hammonds Beach brings you to Shalawa Meadow and a little stone memorial: “The sacredness of the land lies in the mind of its people. This land is dedicated to the spirit and memory of the ancestors and their children.” shauntomson.com. •

Even before you arrive, your personal journey has most likely begun through the ever-available concierge, advisers and specialists. Once you’re on the property, there are at least four expert-instructed fitness classes offered every hour (from aerial yoga to zumba), in addition to a multitude of walks, hikes, bike rides, a state-of-the-art gym, a spirit lodge, pools and, of course, the spa. Topping the priority list are the seated (a welcome reprieve) meals in the dining room, which serves an ever-changing menu of seasonal calorie-conscious items. They may be low cal, but you will never go hungry (unless that’s part of your plan). ust a few blocks off the not-for-amateurs surf break at Ocean Beach, Eric Rewitzer and Annie Galvin potter about cutting out posters that display a custom literary map of the state for California Bookstore Day. It’s just another afternoon of producing work that pays homage to the happy dream of California: sunshine and poppies, grizzly bears, the never-ending highway. Here, in the normally foggy reaches of the Outer Sunset, the couple have turned a former liquor store into a vibrant retail, studio and teaching space, filled with Galvin’s paintings of bears hugging the Sunshine State against different Technicolor backgrounds, and Rewitzer’s relief prints of Golden Gate Bridge and the Bay Bridge—done by handcarving into large slabs of linoleum. On the weekends, Rewitzer teaches printmaking classes, and there is a steady stream of commissions and customers, who often stop in the backyard to knock back a pint from the very S.F.-style “keggerator” or sit at their custom picnic table, crafted in the shape of the state. Before 2007, both artists were slaving away in a different milieu. Tech and banking refugees who made a prodigal return to their early callings, motorcycle rider and Irishwoman Galvin studied art in her homeland, and Michigan native Rewitzer spent his early years as a journeyman stripper—someone who strips film in a commercial color shop. A few forays into selling the work they made at nights and on
weekends made them realize that they had a chance to pursue art full time. “I always kind of dangled the carrot in front of my nose saying that when I was 40 that’s when I could be an artist,” says Rewitzer. So he bought screen-printing equipment, then an etching press and fell in love with relief printmaking. Nearly seven years later, 3 Fish Studios A Californiashaped picnic brings in tourists from Japan and Texas and table. serves as a hub for this vibrant artistic community. “I think people are here because it is really mellow and it is beautiful,” says Rewitzer pensively. And the two continue to innovate: Rewitzer sees his work heading toward larger format, thanks to the new 48inch press they recently purchased (one of the largest in the city), and Galvin is working on expanding her quirky bear-themed images to other states for a complete collection. “There might be some weird states, like Delaware,” she says and laughs. But it’s always something new. Rewitzer beams. “I wasn’t born in California, but I was reborn in California.” 3fishstudios.com.

ACOUSTIC ADVENTURER “I get a profound feeling of comfort from a wooden box with vibrating strings attached to it. It feels magical to me,” says Jacob Aranda. The Chicago transplant and his wife came to Ocean Beach eight months ago to join up with his friend, furniture maker Luke Bartels, one of the four founders of Woodshop SF on Noriega Street. Working among this collective of woodworkers who craft furniture, surfboards and skateboards, Aranda creates custom guitars without using any electronic tools. He spends nearly three months per instrument, working from 19th-century techniques he learned from José Luis Romanillos Vega, a master maker based in Sigüenza, near Madrid. “I used to get very frustrated, thinking I had to make a guitar the same way a factory did it. Then I realized there is another way to do it that’s methodical and meditative. I end up feeling a really strong connection to the wood and the instrument,” he says. arandaguitars.blogspot.com.

Music maestro Master guitar maker Alan Perlman has been crafting and restoring instruments from his home workshop in The Sunset since 1983; reworking Paul Simon’s first handmade guitar or taking on an intensive repair of an 1867 Antonio Torres—the maker who is considered to be the father of the classical guitar—is just part of a day’s work. So when a customer contacts him about a new instrument, Perlman always asks to listen to the person’s playing so he can figure out the appropriate custom qualities: East Indian rosewood or South American mahogany? Wide or narrow body? Tonal type? With a two-year waiting list for an $8,000-plus instrument, and constant restoration projects from the S.F. Conservatory, the purist keeps extraordinarily busy. But that’s the way he likes it. “I think part of the underlying thing is I’ve always had this attraction to virtuosity. Going after perfection,” he says. perlmanguitars.com.

Founder John McCambridge’s retail-shop-slashart-space was christened Mollusk because the surfer wanted something “fractal.” “There are so many cool variations on a mollusk,” he says of the plentiful invertebrate. “The same sort of variations that go into a surfboard or a piece of art.” His Irving Street space channels an artsy Mission School vibe, combined with a hardy, craftsman feel. Handshaped surfboards are propped near a boat with a geometric carapace designed by artist Jay Nelson, a friend, whose tree houses, campers and art installations have museum cred; local artists’ work is available for sale; clothing features graphics by McCambridge’s wife, Johanna St. Clair; and on an impromptu basis, artists such as legendary surf photographer Jeff Divine show up to give slide shows and tell war stories about the ’70s. “You’ve got to entertain people, too,” notes McCambridge. mollusksurfshop.com.

W
hen Gia Coppola started working on Palo Alto, her first feature film (an adaptation of James Franco’s short story), she decided to call up one of her favorite filmmakers, Alexander Payne (Sideways, Nebraska, The Descendants), to ask for some advice. Now, as the film hits theaters, the writer/directors talk about the experience and touch on one of their other favorite subjects: wine. Gia Coppola: You were so supportive when I was starting Palo Alto. I was so nervous and just wanted to pick your brain. Alexander Payne: And I was so flattered that you even asked me, considering who your grandfather is. GC: My 97-year-old uncle just saw Nebraska. He said it was his favorite movie this year because it was so true. I was curious, though, what was your first feature movie like, and how do you feel about it now? When I saw the first edit of Palo Alto, I thought it wasn’t what I initially intended, but it kind of took on its own form, and I had to realize that’s part of making films. AP: That’s the case with every film. You have to learn that you are going to be mortified by every first edit. Editing is the ongoing process of disguising how bad the film really is. We try to make the film suck less, so finally at the end of the process you release the least sucky version of the film. By the time you finished editing, didn’t you feel good about it even if it was different from what you envisioned? GC: Well, it took me a while to stop fiddling with it, and it came to a point where I was only doing more harm than good. My grandpa told me, “Better is the enemy of the good.” So I just had to stop. AP: There’s another editing phrase: “Films are never finished; they are abandoned.” GC: Yeah, well, that’s kind of how it felt for a while, and now, as time has passed, I can look at it as its own. For a while movies didn’t feel the same, and it was really hard to watch them. I thought I had ruined something that I enjoyed so much. AP: You have to cut yourself a lot of slack here. Your first movie is like the first waffle—the iron isn’t quite hot enough; you haven’t put enough butter. The first waffle you always have to throw away, or you, the cook, eat it, but you’d never serve it. You know, the second waffle is servable. GC: That’s a great analogy. AP: No one is defined by one movie, unless you just make one movie and you die. Each one is a learning process. I’ve made six feature films, and I still don’t think I’ve made a good movie. I mean, they’re OK. I consider myself a 53-year-old film student; it’s just that now I’m being paid to continue to learn. GC: I really was trying to figure out how to do this on my own and challenge myself. Of course, I got advice from my grandpa in terms of the business, but I’m still trying to make my own decisions. CONTINUED ON PAGE 128 AP: You have to make friends with your

COOL, CALM, COLLECTED With a meticulous approach, designer Michael S. Smith transformed a bare-bones Pacific Palisades home into a study of traditional elegance By Christine Lennon Photographed by Lisa Romerein

“The architectural details of this room were so strong that the right rug really softens it,” says Smith. Custom shades on a chandelier, a collection of blue-andwhite plates on the wall and a hand-painted Chinese wallpaper. OPPOSITE, CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT The focal point of the master bedroom is the hand-carved bed with bone inlay from India. In the master, a James Welling painting hangs above a ’40s reproduction chest. A generous sofa upholstered in velvet corduroy, a 19th-century bookcase and a bone leather chair furnish the handsome study.

he words “spec house” and the name Michael S. Smith aren’t typically uttered in the same conversation, let alone the same sentence. Smith, who is Los Angeles’ celebrated king of cozy elegance, is known for creating lush, layered interiors in distinguished homes for clients such as Dustin Hoffman, Steven Spielberg and President and Mrs. Obama. Cookie-cutter layouts and factory finishes just aren’t his thing. Maybe that’s why it’s such a surprise to learn that this stately shingled house Smith designed in Pacific Palisades came into being eight years ago as a builder-issued dream house. “It was a really well done, thoughtful spec on such a beautiful site,” says the designer, “but it was still a big project to elevate it and make it feel much richer.” Certainly, the bones of a great house were in place: vast windows to take in the unobstructed green surroundings, weathered gray shingles that echo the gray of the mist and fog that rolls in from the nearby coast, and generous outdoor spaces to enjoy year-round entertaining. But it wasn’t until one of the home’s owners happened to be seated next to Smith on a flight and the two began to chat that full interior reimagining was commissioned. “My husband came home and said, ‘I just met the greatest guy on the plane. I don’t know if he’s any good, but I like him,’” says the homeowner. Smith began by swapping out fireplace mantels, pushing back the yard and improving the flow of the layout, making it more conducive to an active family’s life, and separating public spaces from private ones. “Our challenge was to add interest and give it a sense of complexity, giving each of the rooms a different feeling,” Smith explains. “We took this Connecticut kind of style and gave it a more sophisticated edge.” His solution was to incorporate custom and artisanal touches whenever possible. The walls of the master bedroom, for example, were stenciled with a delicate white design. A hand-painted Chinese border adds some intrigue to the paneled dining room. A patterned fabric from Smith’s own line of textiles was also embroidered, by hand, to impart even more texture and intricacy. An outdoor dining pavilion, which has custom benches around its perimeter, is the quintessential spot for warm-weather gatherings. While the rooms all have their own distinct character, they’re linked by shades of cool blue and cream, deep, cozy custom seating and thoughtful textiles, like antique and custom rugs, throughout. “I’m maybe a little more high maintenance than most of Michael’s clients, because I can be uncertain. I like to see a room evolve,” explains one of the homeowners. “But to me, what’s amazing about Michael is not that he develops a whole concept at once but that he keeps adding to it. We started with rugs, then the fabrics, and then he would show up with the most unexpected thing that just worked. He’s always so right.” •

For the family room, Smith designed a geometric carpet that he describes as “easy to live with.” It stands up to mixing patterns and complements any shape that’s put on it—including a square ottoman, striped drapes by Cowtan & Tout and a “wacky Italian or Spanish wing chair” upholstered in an embroidered, fern-pattern linen.

A collection of blue-and-white pottery is displayed on a Georgian table. Pale yellow hand-painted striped Elizabeth Dow wallpaper makes the white-painted moldings “pop,â€? says Smith. ROBERT PROCOP AND ANGELINA JOLIE ON THE SET OF THE TOURIST, 2010 Robert Procop and Angelina Jolie first met at the Oscars in 2000—the year she won Best Supporting Actress for Girl, Interrupted (and when she may or may not have kissed her brother). Procop, who now has his own salon in Beverly Hills, was the CEO of Asprey & Garrard. They dressed Jolie for the event, and the pair bonded over a mutual love of jewelry. Among their many subsequent projects together was Jolie’s film The Tourist, for which Procop sourced and designed all the jewelry—including this magnificent 68-carat Elise Choker. Jolie and Procop also designed a collection together, with proceeds benefiting Jolie’s charity Education Partnership for Children of Conflict. Last year, it was Brad (Pitt) who called on Procop to design an Art Deco emerald-cut eternity ring, which received a very warm welcome from Jolie.
