THE DIAMOND. THE PROMISE.
founder’s letter
i
have heard of many brides recently who are confused as to whether they should splurge on a big wedding or just forgo the hoopla and elope. They are torn between their childhood dreams and the realities of executing a grand affair. I think there are pros and cons to both sides of the argument. POSITION ONE: A GRAND AFFAIR I know many women (myself
included) who had dreamed of their big day since they were little girls playing make-believe. Files of magazine clippings were stored away for inspiration. They already had everything planned in their minds including
the look of the dress. The idea of letting go of this fantasy is not in the realm of possibility. POSITION TWO: THE ELOPEMENT Some brides would rather avoid the planning process
and complications and get straight to the point: marrying your best friend. Standing at the beach (or a courthouse or in a garden), holding your partner’s hand as you promise yourselves to each other is pretty special. Besides, you skip the hurt feelings that are bound to arise in the process. And let’s not forget all the money saved by not hosting a party for 200-500 of your nearest and dearest—hello, down payment on a house! Both sides are compelling and both sides work. It just depends what you and your partner decide is best. If you are the girl who wants the ceremony and reception for your loved ones and friends, then this issue of C Weddings is full of all the tips, trends and ideas that will help you plan your ideal day. If you are ready to get out of town with dress in tow, just you and your intended, we also have

you covered. Check out the wedding of actress Jaime Murray and Bernie Cahill, who decided to go to Bali for their elopement. Regardless of the size of the ceremony, you still want a perfect dress, jewels and makeup for that special day, even if it is just the two of you. We also present a third option, evidenced in the wedding of superstar chef Curtis Stone and actress Lindsay Price. They decided to have a destination wedding in Majorca, and invited close friends and family to join in on the fun. But keep in mind that you don’t have to leave our glorious state to have the perfect wedding. Big or small, California has whatever you are looking for. In the end, all that matters is that moment

f a picture is worth a thousand words, no doubt a Lara Porzak image is worth a great deal more. Candid scenes, stolen moments, unexpected angles are anything but conventional—the Venice-based photographer shoots exclusively on film, in black and white, and it’s just her, no assistant, with seven cameras slung around her. She primarily does real weddings, but you’ve seen her work (Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi, Drew Barrymore and Will Kopelman). “The best weddings are the ones where the bride and groom really love each other, and you can always tell,” she says. Porzak grew up “all over the place” with her novelist mother, attending high school in Martha’s Vineyard and then Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H., for a filmmaking degree. She eventually landed in L.A. where she was a bridesmaid at actress Elisabeth Shue and director/producer Davis Guggenheim’s wedding. Unsure of what to give them as a gift, she decided to take some photos from a bridesmaid’s point of view...and the rest is history. Eighteen years later, Porzak is at the pinnacle of her career. She shoots on average four weddings per year and is humble about her success as a fine artist (she hosts a show at her loft each December). With a precious stockpile of out-of-production film, one day she intends to donate her collection of vintage contact print frames to a worthy institution like The Getty. “I’m interested in photographs as objects,” says Porzak as she scans her studio. “These prints are made of real silver and printed on thick, high-quality paper; they’ll be around forever.” laraporzakphotography.com. •

A year after her own fairy-tale wedding in Barbados, San Francisco-born designer Erin Fetherston joins Nordstrom this fall for a special capsule collection of bridesmaids dresses. “I wanted to go all out with feminine, romantic, ethereal styles,” she says of the Erin Fetherston x Nordstrom Weddings collab, which features both exclusive styles and renditions of archive pieces—think flower-patterned and sequin- and feather-accented chiffon frocks in a pretty pastel palette. Worried about upstaging the bride? “The truth is she looks even more beautiful when she is surrounded by beautiful bridesmaids,” says Fetherston. The 27-year-old Central Saint Martins grad also recently released her first engagement ring design for the label—the pavé diamondaccented Caress ring—last spring. “I’m drawn to fluidity and abstraction and wanted to create something that could become a modern classic,” she explains. From fashioning mood boards to painting sketches and motifs, every step in Barden’s creative process reflects her preference for jewelry that is both timeless and personal. S
an Francisco arts philanthropist Stephanie Marver has worn glamorous party dresses from Giambattista Valli’s couture collections since 2011 when the French designer presented a fashion show fundraiser for the San Francisco Ballet. “Giambattista Valli’s dresses are wonderfully feminine and joyful, all with a modern flair,” says Stephanie, a longtime patron of the ballet, opera and museums in the city. “I was immediately drawn to his exquisite couture techniques and his beautiful use of handmade lace, highly detailed embroidery and delicate silk.” In April (after one and a half years of dating), she accepted a romantic on-bended-knee proposal from Jim Marver, co-founder of a leading San Francisco venture capital firm. Stephanie’s dress, which was crafted at the designer’s atelier in Paris in less than a month, was a dreamy confection of fluttering organza flowers, layers of Alençon and guipure lace on the bodice, and a flirty, short skirt sculpted with layers of tulle and horsehair. The intimate spring ceremony attended by a few close family members was conducted by Mayor Ed Lee in his chambers at the Baroque-style S.F. City Hall. Stephanie’s 6-year-old daughter, Carissa, was the flower girl. Afterward, they celebrated with a Champagne toast, and a festive dinner in the Mission at Bar Tartine, the site of their first date. •

Excited for the big day. Original sketch of the dress by Karl Lagerfeld. A closer look. Intricate details on the back of the bodice. Removable skirt.
P
oppy Delevingne’s couture Chanel dress for her May wedding to aerospace executive James Cook was an elegant lesson in mathematics. The custom tunic, bolero and skirt—crafted from 17 different pieces made of 55,000 square centimeters of white silk tulle—were divided among five couturiers who spent 400 hours each perfecting the gown. The garment was embellished with 270 flowers cut from four different types of guipure lace, with detailing from 4,600 crystal beads, 2,000 glass tubes, 1,000 bowl-shaped beads and 9,000 beads in crystal glass. After four fittings and the addition of a 16-foot-long, white tulle veil, Poppy married at St. Paul’s Church in Knightsbridge, London, on May 16 (a second celebration followed the next weekend in Marrakech, Morocco). “It was beyond my wildest dreams,” she says—even the London sun came out. “I’m the luckiest, happiest girl alive.” The British actress and model, who has recently been spending time in Los Angeles while she expands her Hollywood repertoire—continued the celebrations into the evening at Chiltern Firehouse with a shortened hem and Massaro shoes piqued with plexiglass heels (30 hours went into fashioning them—for those still counting). “I love the way the skirt can be removed to become a party dress; it’s very me,” she says, adding, “If only I could sleep in it every night.” chanel.com.

oose hair like this is modern and unfussy—everything a bride should be feeling on her big day,” says Benjamin Mohapi, founder and director of West Hollywood’s Benjamin with Negin Zand salon. Here, the British-born hairstylist (who also opened Selects Apothecary in March featuring a curated selection of luxury products) shares his tips: • Although I like to think less is more, there are times when it’s important to dress things up. Hair accessories like flowers or jewelry can be really effective (as shown here), but remember to keep it simple. • It’s best to wash your hair the
evening before the wedding, as clean hair doesn’t hold its shape as well. Sleeping with it in a braid can give you a great texture to work with, too. • When styling, a little salt spray before you do anything is a great idea. It will give the hair a bit of grip, so it’s good for braided styles and helps hold in pins or combs. • Another definite is to go easy on the hairspray. Grip is good, but stiff is bad. You do not want hair to be anything other than relaxed and happy on the wedding day, just like the bride herself. 8910 Melrose Ave., West Hollywood, 424-249-3296; salonbenjamin.com; selectsapothecary.com. •

rom a two-week turnaround to a couple who wanted to drive a DeLorean down the aisle, Firefly Events has been fielding challenges since 2009, when the planning company launched in L.A. Teissia Treynet and Alia Wilson’s goal is originality—something achieved with installations like hanging centerpieces and “anti-ballroom wedding” spaces in New York like The Bowery Hotel, The Foundry, Wave Hill House and Glenmere Mansion; and collaborations with Les Loups, Saipua, Tree of Life Films, Rebecca Shepherd Floral Design, Nine Cakes and Winsome Brave. “We love combining over-the-top artistic elements with simple, classic details,” says Treynet. But after moving to New York in 2011, it will be nice to omit the 200 umbrellas for any given backup plan as the duo returns with a second office in Downtown L.A. Here out west, the list jumps from venues in Ojai, Napa and Palm Springs to tucked away gems like Figueroa Mountain Farmhouse, Post Ranch Inn and Rancho del Cielo. Some of their favorite vendors include Jen Huang, Nick Radford, Shotgun Floral Studio, DJ Bill, Elisabeth Millay, Anne Robin Calligraphy and Elan Artists. With the expansion, they’re looking forward to working with Moon Canyon, Whoa Nelly Catering, Room Forty, Urban Palate and Urbanic Paper Boutique. The more, the merrier. “It’s really important to us that the weddings we plan are fun,” says Treynet. “It is a party, after all!” firefly-events.com.

A multitalented vendor is highly coveted for its one-less-stress quality and aesthetic coherence. Take M.K. Sadler, for instance, whose expertise covers invitation design and paper goods, calligraphy and photography. This Texas transplant isn’t going to make sunshine when it’s raining, though. Meghan Kay Sadler’s style skews moodier, she admits—a narrative vibe with more gray tones and shadows. That’s particularly helpful with engagement photos, a genre that can often feel staged. For a Venice couple, that meant forgoing an elaborate engagement setup and shooting at home in Venice. “It’s more about the story the image tells,” Sadler explains. “It requires a longer look and makes you inquire about the moment before and after the picture. I want my images to make you feel something, not to just show off a trend.” mksadler.com.

Savor the Skyline With a futuristic touch, Heirloom LA pulls off a wedding feast as light as air
L
os Angeles’ American Cement Building was the 1964 vision of the firm Daniel, Mann, Johnson and Mendenhall. Through its latticed skeleton of sculptural harlequin-pattern concrete covering its façade, one can enjoy views for days. This incredible piece of architectural yesteryear was a stunning backdrop for a recent sunset ceremony and reception. Tables perfectly lined with shiny Panton chairs were awash with monochromatic anthurium and ranunculus in angular black vases, while dark foliage and hints of gold added interest to the tablescape. Perennially hot caterer Heirloom LA planned a menu to complement the minimal-mod scheme. “The bride did all the design herself with a 2001: A Space Odyssey concept,” explains co-owner Tara Maxey. “It was really elegantly unusual.” No astronaut food here— from the cocktail hour of old-fashioneds and tequila palomas, to the farm-direct dinner and trufflestudded dessert—the feast (think heirloom gazpacho, market fish, ricotta cavatelli with red beet juice) reflected sunset colors but didn’t detract from the ethereal mood. heirloomla.com. •

odel/swimwear designer Tori Praver and pro surfer/photographer Danny Fuller were both raised in Hawaii but didn’t meet until they were set up on a blind date in New York. After six years of dating, Danny proposed on the top of a mountain in Whistler, British Columbia, Canada, on their annual snowboarding trip. Without question, the couple knew they wanted to get married back in Hawaii. “We chose Kauai because of its stunning beauty and I fell in love with this specific venue,” says Tori of the bluffs overlooking Pila’a Beach. “I wanted so badly to get married under a big tree and Danny wanted to get married overlooking the ocean. This location had both. It was perfection.” Beneath streams of flowers in front of 225 friends and family, the bride, who wore a Mara Hoffman dress, says, “The ceremony had so many memorable rituals including being wrapped in a lei for a special prayer, and Danny, our daughter [7-month-old Ryan Mahina] and I drinking from a coconut.” The Malibu-based newlyweds are staying busy with Tori’s latest swimwear collection debuting while Danny opens a photo exhibition, “Meditation on Blue,” in the Hamptons. •

Actress Jaime Murray and Bernie Cahill, a founding partner at ROAR, exchange “I do’s” amidst an exotic Balinese rain forest
THE COUPLE
“We always said we would elope, and we did. It was just the two of us,” says Jaime. “It was incredibly intimate and the perfect choice for us.”
Travel (Bits) THE RINGS
“We chose my Cartier Love ring because it’s so classic and practical,” explains Jaime. “Bernie’s ring is from David Yurman, who uses a lot of Balinese influences in his work.”
THE DETAILS
“I found my white umbrella at the Portobello Market in London...it was the perfect solution to the midday sun,” says Jaime. “I also grabbed this handwoven fan from my room as we left for the ceremony.”
“Bali is a magical place. Our wedding took place at the Amandari, which means ‘peaceful spirits,’ and it was breathtaking,” the bride says.
THE DRESS
“I’m not a big wedding gown kind of girl,” says Jaime. “When I tried this Monique Lhuillier dress, I loved the simplicity and elegance of the cut. It also had that old-school, boudoir look I wanted.”
THE CEREMONY
“We had our service high up in the lush, green rain forest, surrounded by nature’s rich colors and scents, with the rushing waters of the Ayung River below,” says the bride.

CTRESS LINDSAY PRICE had a good feeling about the blind date she agreed to at Terroni in West Hollywood when Curtis Stone insisted they sit beside each other in a booth instead of across the table. The next three years were a whirlwind—the L.A.-based couple welcomed their first child, son Hudson, in 2011, and Curtis, a renowned chef, opened Maude in Beverly Hills. On a much-needed Italian holiday, Curtis gave Lindsay a love letter about their relationship that ended with “Will you marry me?” The couple remembered a vacation to Majorca and their friend Marietta Salas, who owns a majestic Arabian horse farm on the island (Ganadería Ses Planes), and in 2013 they tied the knot at a black-tie affair on the property. “A destination wedding meant giving up control of every little detail, which we happily did,” says Lindsay. SoCal-based planner Lisa Vorce, who specializes in romantic destination affairs, took the reins for the Old World European fairy tale. (“We actually found Lisa in a C Weddings issue that my dear friend and stylist from ‘Lipstick Jungle,’ Amanda Ross, sent to me when she found out Curtis and I were getting married.”) As Lindsay spent the day getting ready, Curtis prepared the meal inspired by local traditions and recipes and made a carrot cake (Lindsay’s favorite) decorated with wildflowers from the gardens. “While he was mixing the batter, we each stirred in a wish for the future,” says Lindsay. “And now every year we make this cake and make a new wish.” The newlyweds celebrated their first anniversary in Curtis’ native Australia, eagerly awaiting the arrival of their second child in September. •

FAMILY DINNER AT NOBU MALIBU quickly turned into a wedding planning session for Heather Perrilliat and Jared Freedman. “We both love sushi and the space is so beautiful and inviting,” explains Heather, a professional interior organizer from Oakland. “It sits on the ocean and was the perfect place for us.” Five years after meeting at a party at Hollywood’s Roosevelt Hotel, Jared, a brand director with Citizens of Humanity jeans, popped the question during a relaxing day at home in Santa Monica. “I told him that my client had asked me, ‘If your boyfriend asked you to marry him right now, would you say yes?’ ” Heather explains. “He said, ‘Well, would you?’ and then he leaned over and reached into a hiding place and handed me a ring.” Heather put a festive spin on the zen space—incorporating origamiinspired piñatas and tasseled branches by New York-based Confetti System, simple succulents and greenery in geometric vessels and even a Lladró Hello Kitty figure atop the metallic cake from Culver City’s Jin Patisserie. Heather surprised her groom with a graffiti wall made by one of his best friends for a photo backdrop that doubled as a privacy wall in the parking lot. After exchanging vows on the restaurant’s outdoor deck overlooking the ocean, the couple headed inside for sushi and dancing, later revealing to their 175 guests they had a little girl on the way (Golden, was born six months later on March 14). Heather’s friend Chip Brown—better known as Big Man Bakes from Downtown L.A.—whipped up individually boxed chocolate, red velvet and carrot cupcakes for guests to enjoy on their way home. While the couple’s honeymoon excursion to Europe was postponed due to morning sickness, Heather says the pregnancy made the big day even more special. “It all happens and goes by so fast, but it was amazing…so many people told us it was the most fun they ever had at a wedding.” •

Santa Barbara is the ideal setting for Annina Mislin and Patrick Hill’s serene courthouse ceremony By Zinzi Edmundson Photographed by Blue Caleel

O THEIR FRIENDS and family, Annina Mislin and Patrick Hill have always possessed a quiet strength. The couple met in their native Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada, nine years ago, and moved to L.A. together in 2008. Annina is C’s associate fashion editor and Patrick is the creative director of streetwear brand The Hundreds. Staying true to their cool, understated style, the Silverlake couple chose to eschew the frills of a large wedding in Canada for a more intimate affair in Santa Barbara last spring. Their families (16 people in all) rented homes in Montecito and spent nearly a week in the area. “It was really important to us that they all spend time together,” says Annina. While Patrick and his compatriots surfed daily, others enjoyed cocktails at Coral Casino Beach and Cabana Club and spa time at Four Seasons Resort The Biltmore. On a sun-drenched Friday afternoon, Annina, in a Céline slip dress, choker and pumps, with her Bulgari Serpenti engagement ring, joined Patrick in the gardens of the Santa Barbara Courthouse for the quiet ceremony. After cocktails at The Biltmore and a stroll on the beach in Montecito, the party assembled around two long tables at Italian mainstay Pane e Vino, subtly decorated with white peony arrangements. “By simplifying everything, it felt like us,” says Annina. “And it all held such a special importance as both my grandparents and great-grandmother had homes in Montecito.” •

#LYSM Christina McBride and Evan Sharp, two social-media power players, throw an elegant affair inside a 100-year-old San Francisco landmark By Kelsey McKinnon
C
HRISTINA MCBRIDE FIRST MET Evan Sharp when they were freshmen at the University of Chicago. After graduating with history degrees, the like-minded couple moved to New York to study design—he at Colombia University, she at Fashion Institute of Technology. Christina came home one evening to their studio filled with flowers and candles—and Evan waiting to propose. After graduating (again), the couple moved west to pursue careers in tech—Christina is now the head of Digital, Global Business Marketing at Facebook; Evan co-founded Pinterest and is the company’s Chief Creative Officer. Naturally, Pinterest boards abounded as wedding planning got underway. The couple created personal boards and collaborated with vendors who shared their vision (no Evites here, bridesmaid Jessica Hische designed the invitations). “An intimate dinner party was our vision from the beginning,” explains Christina. After a morning of torrential rain, the clouds parted as 80 guests gathered at the Swedenborgian Church in Pacific Heights—a national historic landmark beaming with arts and crafts charm. “It felt like a sanctuary within the city,” remembers Christina. Cocktail hour was held beneath towering redwoods in the garden before dinner inside the cozy parish house with a roaring fire. Angela Ginsburg of A Fork Full of Earth served an organic feast sourcing cheese from Harley Farms in Pescadero (the site of the rustic rehearsal dinner). An after-party ensued at the Hideout at Dalva. “We walked home together through our neighborhood, which felt really surreal and special,” Christina says. Guests were asked to use a hashtag (#evanandchristina) for their Instagram and Facebook photos. “We were really touched by all the moments friends captured and shared with us,” says Christina. Caroline Wolff gives Andrew Casino her hand at her family’s bucolic Hopland vineyard
O
By Zinzi Edmundson
FTENTIMES, true style comes with the restraint to admit when something is already working. Such was the case at the wedding of W Magazine’s photo director Caroline Wolff to financier Andrew Casino at the bride’s family vineyard in Mendocino County. The couple of 10 years wed surrounded by oak trees, forgoing superfluous adornment with a simple altar. “It was magical,” says Caroline. “The sun was dappling through the two humongous trees and Spanish moss was hanging down in a natural canopy.” The short walk to the knoll where the ceremony took place cut through the vineyard itself, immersing guests in the location, which was important to the couple. “Drew proposed in the same place almost a year to the day,” says Caroline. “It was really special that we were able to have the wedding there.” During the ceremony, close friends of the family performed a song by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, encouraging others to sing along, which created a communal aspect that the bride describes as “really beautiful and meaningful.” Later, Caroline slipped out of her mother’s 1979 Saks Fifth Avenue wedding dress, expertly tailored by Irene Tcherniakhovsky, who is the go-to for Rodarte and Jason Wu, and into an off-the-rack Lanvin. If ever there was a signal to start the party, this was it. Dinner was served family style on long farm tables until DJ Mike Gross, a friend of the couple who had flown from London for the event, started his set. “People were dancing all night and it was packed,” says Caroline. The evening wasn’t over after the last song. “When the music stopped, everyone jumped in the pool!” she says. Friends and family lingered until the wee hours, when fire pits lit up, and marshmallows and guitars were brought out. “I didn’t want it to be overly complicated,” says Caroline of the night. “It was simple, warm, festive and happy.” •

ATHERINE AND LOREN Lewallen were 18 when they first spotted each other in the freshmen dorms at Columbia University in New York City. After a year of being “library buddies,” as Katherine explains, the duo began dating the first week of their sophomore year. “I finally confessed that I really liked him. He was so surprised!” Katherine recalls. Her acceptance into Berkeley Law School allowed the couple to switch coasts in 2010. Loren, a Mendocino County native and financial analyst, proposed to Katherine (who is now a poverty lawyer) while on a winter vacation to Dominica in the Caribbean. Their next thought was Big Sur, a place they had frequently visited. “It’s this incredibly magical and special place…the mountains and the ocean give it an indescribable allure,” explains Katherine. Following an almost two-year engagement, the pair kicked off their wedding weekend with a rehearsal dinner at Ventana Inn in Big Sur and exchanged “I do’s” the following day on a private cliffside property in front of 107 guests (plus the couple’s beloved rescue dog, Sya). The natural altar, a colorful flower garland connecting two of the venue’s native redwood trees, reflected the rural aesthetic of the ceremony created by wedding planners Yifat Oren & Stefanie Cove. Moroccan-inspired pillows, decorative staghorns and a colorful, woven tree swing helped complete the look. The reception followed in an open-air tent pitched on the grounds, where worldly dishes by Paula LeDuc included Serrano ham with mint and feta and coconut-curry-topped salmon were served alongside wines by Matthiasson and Schramsberg bubbles. “We wanted the spirit of the wedding to capture the beauty of the space, to enhance it and blend into it instead of take away from it,” Katherine adds. A quick honeymoon in Cuixmala, Mexico, where the newlyweds encountered the retreat’s exotic zebras, antelopes and crocodiles, allowed Katherine to return in time to launch her nonprofit, Root & Rebound, a mere seven days after the wedding. Haute couture wedding gowns are perhaps the ultimate fashion statement—the result of a heady combination of inspired design, expert craftsmanship and surging emotions. For her wedding to actor Mel Ferrer in Bürgenstock, Switzerland (the couple met at a cocktail party at Gregory Peck’s L.A. home), Audrey Hepburn beamed in a high-collared, white organdy tea-length gown by French couturier Pierre Balmain…to love and to cherish from this day forward.
