The top 15 rodeo athletes will pull out all the stops to show they have what it takes to earn a World Champion title. It’s been an eventful year for the women of rodeo as they continued to astonish audiences across the country. Each time they ride out into the arena, these ladies break down barriers to reimagine what’s possible in barrels and breakaway. With ever-growing support, there’s never been a better time to saddle up and take the reins as a female rodeo athlete. In this issue, we celebrate their accomplishments with a peek at what’s happening in women’s rodeo. Finally, we want to give a special thank you to our sponsors and fans that help support this great magazine. We also want to thank our staff who work tirelessly to make it happen. Stay tuned for our World Finals edition, which will release on December 1, just in time for the Wrangler NFR.

Welcome to American Buckle Magazine’s 2022 Fall edition. What an exciting time to be a rodeo fan! In this edition, we collectively connect our readers to the latest happenings in and around the rodeo circuits as rodeo teams and athletes make their final push for a World Championship title. As this summer kicked off, the PBR launched its allnew PBR Team Series competition. The organization conducted its first draft in late May, forming eight teams. Traditionally, bull riding is an individual sport, but now, these athletes have created a brotherhood. In this issue, we check in with the teams and cover the latest happenings. The fall season tends to be a favorite among most Americans. For cowboys, it’s deer hunting season. To some, it’s a yearly family tradition. To others, it means putting food on the table. Our friends at Sportsman’s Choice Record Rack have helped cowboys and hunters tag the biggest racks across the country for years. We sit down and interview PRCA steer wrestlers Dakota Eldridge and Clayton Hass, along with NASCAR Truck Series driver Spencer Boyd, as they share some of their favorite hunting adventures. We also take a look at what’s happening in the current PRCA Season, which is in full swing. Our favorite cowboys and cowgirls are pulling out the big guns this year to earn the right to enter the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas on Dec. 1-10 for the 2022 Wrangler National

The PBR changed the game when it announced its new Team Series, which would put the world’s most elite bull riders up against one another in a series of 5-on-5 headto-head competitions culminating in a Superbowl-style rodeo standoff. Bull riding is notoriously solitary, so competing as teams seemed utterly novel. Still, hometown pride is real. With enthusiasm behind classic team sports such as football and baseball, it seemed like a clever play to bring audiences together to root for their favorite riders

in a competitive format where there’s more at stake than ever. These riders would be drafted in the same way sports like football and basketball hold drafts to build the best teams. The individual riders would work together, train together, and win or lose together. They would represent cities, and brands would even add their names to some of them. The teams would be composed of seven core competitors and three practice squad members, though only four riders would participate in each head-to-head matchup.

The PBR’s gamble paid off. Since the PBR Team Series kicked off on July 25 and 26 at Cheyenne Frontier Days in Cheyenne, Wyoming, audiences have shown up in droves to cheer on their favorite teams and riders.

The team with the most wins at the end of an event wins. If there’s a tie, there’s a final matchup to settle the score. Now, each team is fighting its way into a playoff series and finale event at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas from November 4-6. ROSTERS HOW BEEN PERFORMING THROUGHOUT THE SEASON.

The PBR Team Series follows a tournament-style format. The individual scoring format hasn’t changed, as each player is judged out of 50 points, and each bull gets a score, too. Teams face off head-to-head, and the team that scores the highest number of overall points wins. Teams face different competitors each day of every event.

Perhaps it’s no surprise that Jose Vitor Leme was the first rider picked for the league. The Austin Gamblers claimed the two-time PBR World Champion, who had sustained an injury just days before the draft after a spill at the 2022 PBR World Finals: Unleash The Beast left him with four broken ribs and a partially collapsed lung. Still, Leme has repeatedly proved that he’s damn near unstoppable, leading the Team Series MVP race and going 10-for-14 throughout the Team Series season so far. And, even when Leme bucked off at the PBR Stampede Days in a match against the Carolina Cowboys, the boys came through, with rides from Ezekiel Mitchell and Austin Richardson carrying the win. At the time of publication, the Gamblers sit neck-andneck with the Missouri Thunder at 7-3-0. However, with more than $40,000 in earnings ahead of the Thunder, the Gamblers may be the team to beat when the playoffs roll around in just a few months.

It’s been a bit slow going this season for the Texas Rattlers. Even with Cody Jesus, who ranked seventh in the regular season, Brady Fielder, who landed 22nd in the season, and 12-year PBR veteran Ednei Caminhas on the team, it hasn’t been enough to get this team where it needs to go. But maybe some fresh blood is what this team needs to help push the team out of its 3-7-0 slump. That may have been what coach Cody Lambert was backing on when he agreed to trade Ednelio Almeida, who is on injured reserve, to the Carolina Cowboys for Junior Patrik Souza. It’ll be interesting to see whether the team’s gamble on Souza pays off.

In what could have been a no-score matchup against the Texas Rattlers, Alves pulled off the only ride between both teams to earn a win for the Stampede in the team’s hometown at PBR Stampede Days. With this win, the Stampede now stands even with the Texas Rattlers and the Oklahoma Freedom at 3-7-0. While it may be tough to turn the team around completely, the win is a promising indicator that adding Alves to the roster was a good move for the franchise. ARIAT TEXAS RATTLERS

It’s hard to put the finger on why this team is sitting in the mid-tier. Though Dalton Kasel, Bob Mitchell and Marcus Mast are putting on decent showings, the fact that it’s a team event means everyone competing needs to carry their weight. But, at 4-6-0, the team needs to push harder as a unit if it wants to succeed on the circuit.

But now that Kyler Oliver is back in the game after recovering from a broken neck, there’s no telling what the future holds for this team. Oliver placed tenth in the standings during the regular season, and his run included five rides scored 90 points or higher. He could singlehandedly turn this team around with numbers like that, provided he’s back in full force after his recovery.

While most of the riders on this team are seasoned and experienced, the team is an underdog facing off against Leme, the cowboy who has a record-smashing 75 lifetime 90-point rides. As such, it’s quite a feat to see these boys giving it their all to go neck-and-neck with their rival team to earn glory with their emphasis on consistency.

Although Luciano De Castro is 6-for14 rides throughout the Team Series, and Alisson de Souza is 8-for-16, their combined efforts haven’t quite managed to push them into the top spot. Oklahoma Freedom’s 3-7-0 record puts them in the same spot as the Rattlers and the Stampede. Even with such a stacked team of active riders, including Eli Vastbinder, who ranked ninth in the 2022 regular season, and Derek Kolbaba, who claimed fifteenth in the overall season, the team hasn’t been consistent enough to pull the numbers it needs to get ahead. However, with two-time World Champion Jess Lockwood and eight-time World Finals qualifier Chase Outlaw debuting with the team, the Freedom might have just the manpower it needs to set itself back on course this season. Both have been out with injuries, so they have to prove to the world that they can step back in and do exactly what they need to do to get this team out of its slump.

The Carolina Cowboys currently stand at the middle of the pack, with a 5-5-0 season. The team MVP has been Daylon Swearingen, who earned the distinction of being the PBR’s number one ranked bull rider in the 2022 regular season. He currently leads the team in earnings at $32,700, aided in part by a 92.5 ride on I’m Legit Too in a bonus round during the Team Series’ inaugural event in Cheyenne. Still, it’s the luck of the draw sometimes, and even though he’s had plenty of solid rides, it hasn’t been enough to edge out the competition in the head-toheadMasonformat.Taylor, who ranked 13th for the overall regular season, is also putting forth a solid effort. While he’s managed several rides throughout the Team Series, he just hasn’t quite been able to pull the numbers to bring the numbers to push the Cowboys into the forefront. this team still has plenty of time to show its true potential and claim its place at the top of the standings.

It’s no surprise that the men of rodeo and NASCAR are among that group. While they might be busy throughout the spring and summer, they have a bit of a break in the fall and winter where they can hunt whitetail and other game.

We had a chance to catch up with NASCAR Camping World Truck Series racer Spencer Boyd, eight-time National Finals Rodeo qualifier and two-time NFR average winner in steer wrestling Dakota Eldridge, and four-time NFR qualifier competing in steer wrestling and team roping (header) Clayton Hass about their love of the sport. But it’s not only hunting these three have in common. They’re all enthusiastic supporters of Sportsman’s Choice ® Record Rack’s Sportsman Choice deer feed and are avid supporters of the company’s Bucks for the Brave initiative, which brings together veterans and first responders for the hunting trip of a lifetime.

HEROESHUNTINGWITH SPENCER BOYD, DAKOTA ELDRIDGE, AND CLAYTON HASS SHARE STORIES FROM THE GREAT OUTDOORS 252022 VOLUME 2 | ABM

Deer hunting season is right around the corner. If you’re a fan of the outdoors and are looking forward to the start of the season, you’re not alone: about 8.1 million people hunt deer annually.

As he got busier with rodeo, it was harder for him to find the time to journey into the outdoors. But, once his rodeo career was on track, he felt the itch again. He found himself hunting elk with Mike Richie of Richie Outfitters in the Idaho wilderness, which boasts some of the best elk hunting in the “Evernation.since that trip in 2016, I’ve just been crazy about it,” he says. “I still love getting a nice trophy and getting the meat on the table, but at the same time, I get huge enjoyment out of either taking a client to get an animal or helping the veterans down there, seeing them enjoy the great outdoors and see those animals so close, and connect with nature.”

“Growing up in Missouri, outdoors were a big part of my life, hunting and fishing. Hunting whitetail deer is a big part of the lifestyle of Missouri,” Boyd says. “My grandparents had a farm, and my dad hunted all the time. So for me, hunting started out at probably four or five years old.” Boyd got his first sixpointer, which he says should have been an eight-pointer, when he was 11 — an impressive animal with a 21.5-inch spread between the antlers.Hass also started young in his hometown of Terrell, Texas.

As with many hunters, all three started hunting at a young age. They went out with their fathers and have fond memories of their earliest excursions into the wilderness.

“’I’ve always had a pretty strong predator gene in me, from shooting squirrels out on my grandma’s ranch or shooting stuff with a slingshot,” Eldridge says. “Growing up, me and my dad hunted, and we would harvest a few deer and a couple of antelope when I was a kid.”

Young Guns Chasing Big Bucks

The veterans he speaks of are those who partake in Bucks for the Brave, an initiative developed by Record Rack to honor veterans, retired military, and first responders. Eldridge, Hass, and Boyd are all involved with the program.

Nominations were due on September 11, but those interested in nominating someone for next year’s event can sign up for the Sportsman’s Choice mailing list for updates on the application process for 2023.

-SPENCER BOYD

Bucks for the Brave honors those who have put their lives on the line in service of our country. In many cases, these brave men and women have had experiences the broader population can’t even begin to imagine. Although Americans take time to celebrate their sacrifices on Veteran’s Day, the Sportsman’s Choice Record Rack team wanted to do even more to honor them. That was the genesis of the initiative, which grants discharged veterans and retired first responders, including law enforcement, firefighters, and EMTs, the opportunity to go on the hunting trip of a lifetime. Record Rack selects one winner from each category: Air Force veteran, Army veteran, Coast Guard veteran, Marine Corps veteran, Navy veteran, retired law enforcement, retired firefighter, and retired EMT.

Giving Back to Those Who Give Their All: Bucks for the Brave

The next hunt takes place on Veterans Day weekend, November 9-13, 2022, at Trinity Oak’s Thumbtack Ranch in Batesville, Texas. Selected participants have the chance to hunt alongside one another and also get to meet and hunt alongside some of the company’s sponsored athletes across rodeo and NASCAR. I’ve always had a pretty strong predator gene in me, from shooting squirrels out on my grandma’s ranch or shooting stuff with a slingshot.

“Growing up in Texas, we mainly hunted whitetail, with feral hogs and ducks, too. I was seven when I harvested my first deer,” says Hass. Eldridge is a lifelong hunter, but it’s only over the past few years that his love for hunting developed into a true passion.

“It’s always something I look forward to,” he says. “I really had no idea what to expect my first time. And then, after a couple of nights in, I caught myself tearing up and listening to these stories and just getting to know these heroes.”

“Some of these guys have been through some wild, wild situations,” Boyd says. “And they’re heroes. I’m just chasing a dream, driving a racecar, and here I am sitting with these guys that have accomplished so much and gave so much for so little. It’s a pretty humbling experience. By the end of it, you feel like family.”

272022 VOLUME 2 | ABM

This year will be his fourth year returning to the event.

Boyd, Hass, and Eldridge have all participated in Bucks for the Brave as special guests. For each of them, it’s been a profound experience that strongly impacted them. As each of these men speaks about their experiences, it’s hard not to take note of the emotions behind their words.

Boyd was such a fan of the product that he took the initiative to reach out to Record Rack about working together, which is also how the company made its first foray into NASCAR.

“Those guys impacted my life so much because they did so much for our country, and it’s just amazing. I just have a deeper respect for them the more I go, and the more veterans I meet and learn about their sacrifices,” Eldridge says. after a couple of nights in, I caught myself tearing up and listening to these stories and just getting to know these heroes.

None of these adventures would be possible without Sportsman’s Choice, which offers a complete line of products and feeds so landowners can grow bigger, healthier deer throughout their land.

Sportsman’s Choice Record Rack: “The Best on the Market”

Eldridge says that when he first heard about Bucks for the Brave, he knew he wanted to get involved immediately.

“We were able to put a pretty organic partnership together, just from me using the product and saying, ‘Hey, like, I like this. I think NASCAR fans would like this, and you haven’t been in the sport before.’” Boyd says.

“It’s the best on the market,” Hass says. “I have some kinfolk involved in raising deer and high-fence hunting. It’s pretty crazy what they have witnessed as far as the growth of the deer and the protein, and as far as growing better deer and better horn for their business.”

Hass echoes Boyd’s sentiment.

Hunters can take advantage of these products by establishing mineral sites in the early spring. Once deer discover a location where they can consistently find treats and nourishment, they’ll visit throughout the spring and summer months, meaning they’ll be in excellent health once deer hunting season rolls around.

PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT 28 ABM | 2022 VOLUME 2

“I’m very blessed to do what I love for a living. And so when I can give back, I do, because I wouldn’t have those freedoms if it weren’t for those veterans out there and those first responders out there fighting every day for us,” he says.

“When you go down to Trinity Oaks, you see the antler growth those deer have, their coats are glossy, and they’re fat. It’s crazy to see deer that healthy,” Eldridge says. “They showed me a picture of a buck the year before and then the buck next year. It was like, ‘Holy cow!’ The overall growth and quality of the deer is just unreal.”

“I’ve had grandfathers and family members who have been in the military. And I understand what they’ve talked about and experienced,” says Hass. “Then, to be able to go in firsthand with the selected few people that get to go on the hunt, when we sit by the campfire, and actually talk about more in-depth of what they went through — you appreciate what people laid on the line and that they put their lives out there for our country, and for me and my family as well.”

-SPENCER BOYD

The Record Rack line includes an array of products to help promote growth, such as nutrition-filled nuggets, deer treats, breeder pellets for areas where the deer are in short supply, and flavored deer corn that provides energy to the local deer population.

292022 VOLUME 2 | ABM

Hass is making sure to keep the hunting tradition in the family, starting with his 10-year-old daughter.

“We haven’t gotten to hunt in Texas together. We’ve always hunted in North Carolina and Kansas, kind of close to home out here in the Carolinas,” he says. “So we’re excited to go get on some big bucks down there.”

“Wecountry.rodeo till the middle of September, and that’s usually when the elk are starting to bugle and stuff. And so I’m headed back into that,” he says.

Like millions of other Americans, all three men are looking forward to enjoying everything the season offers them. To learn more about Sportsman’s Choice feeds, Record Rack, and Bucks for the Brave, visit the website at www.sportsmanschoicefeeds.com.

Hunting Season on the Horizon

Eldridge is looking forward to the opportunity to return to elk

He also has plans to do some pheasant hunting and will hunt whitetail in South Dakota. Come November, he’ll head to Colorado to hunt elk.

“I got her started shooting archery, and I’ve taken her out a few times,” he says. “She hasn’t harvested anything. If hunting is something she wants to take a step into and do, then that’s something that I’ll let her do. And if she just wants to learn how to shoot, that’s okay as well.”

After Bucks for the Brave, he’s also planning another big trip with some of his fellow rodeo athletes.

“I’ll be doing a Coues deer hunt in Mexico with Hunt Warz,” he says. Hunt Warz will record video of the excursion and release it as part of a competition-style YouTube show.

Meanwhile, in addition to returning to Trinity Oaks with Bucks for the Braves, Boyd looks forward to hunting with his father in Texas for the first time.

The PRCA Season is in full swing, and our favorite cowboys and cowgirls are pulling out the big guns this year to earn the right to enter the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas on Dec. 1-10 for the 2022 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. With a record-setting payout of more than $10.9 million, it’s no wonder the competition is as fierce as ever. The top 15 rodeo athletes in bull riding, saddle bronc, bareback, tie-down roping, steer wrestling, steer roping, team roping, barrel racing, and breakaway roping will pull out all the stops to show they have what it takes to earn a World Champion title. It’s been quite a year so far, and there’s still more to come. Here, we check in with the PRCA’s best athletes to catch up on who’s making waves during the 2022 rodeo season.

PRCA RECAP

ALL AROUND I

RECAPPRCA

t’s no surprise to see three-time all-around World Champion Stetson Wright at the top of the leaderboards again this season. As one of the best bull riders and saddle bronc riders, Wright has a superpower ability to hone in on what he wants and achieve his goals. With more than $332,022.89 in qualified all-around earnings for 2022, the 23-year-old recently broke the record for most money won all-around in a single season. He presently ranks first in bull riding and second in saddle bronc. Second-ranked Caleb Smidt would have to make an incredible showing throughout the rest of the season to catch up to Wright in the all-around standings, as Wright’s earnings are more than double Smidt’s. Wright deserves every penny he’s earned this year, with 11 wins each in both bull riding and saddle bronc and 21 allaround event wins. Wright has cinched the win in saddle bronc at the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo, the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo, the Fort Herriman (Utah) PRCA Rodeo, and Days Of The Old West Rodeo (Delta, Utah). He’s led the way in bull riding at the Ute Mountain Round-Up (Cortez, Colo.), RodeoHouston, Rodeo Austin, and Caldwell Night Rodeo (Idaho), where he earned a 93-point ride on Domino (Powder River Rodeo).

SADDLE BRONC

BAREBACK In the bareback scene, all eyes are on Jeff Pope, who finished second in the standings in 2021 but won the 2021 NFR bareback event and the average. Pope, who holds $137,580.91 in season earnings, won the average in 2020, which was also his first-ever NFR qualification. However, he’s just a smidge ahead of both three-time World Champion Tim O’Connell, who holds the second-place spot, and two-time NFR qualifier Cole Reiner. Fortunately for both of them, a few thousand dollars isn’t a lot when there’s so much money at stake throughout the rest of the season and up through the NFR.

repeatedly, a few solid wins or a good run at the NFR can make or break an athlete’s season, so only time will tell if Newman can keep his lead and stay ahead of the competition.

BULL RIDING Stetson Wright remains an unstoppable force in bull riding, commanding $252,451.70 in qualified earnings for the season. There’s more than $40,000 separating him and second-place Josh Frost, who won the NFR event and average titles in 2021 and ended the year as the reserve World Champion. But, it’s still anyone’s to take as a streak of bad luck for Wright, or a series of solid runs for Frost or thirdranked Jeff Askey, could change the dynamic. At 34 years old, Askey may be having one of the best years of his career, with eight wins and a co-champion title so far this season.

In a season surprise, Sage Newman holds the number one spot in saddle bronc with $233,359.65 in season earnings, marking an excellent year after qualifying for his first NFR last year and finishing 11th overall in 2021. He’s significantly ahead of Stetson Wright, who has earned $163,565.30 in the sport this year. Two-time saddle bronc World Champion Ryder Wright must put in a little more work if he wants to catch up to his younger brother, as Ryder sits fourth in the standings with $147,833.40. He’s behind Brody Cress, who holds the third-place spot withBut,$163,146.42.aswe’veseen

STEER ROPING At the ripe age of 47, Scott Snedecor shows no signs of slowing down. He’s qualified for the National Finals Steer Roping (NFSR) 20 times, and 2022 will likely be his 21st qualification. With $71,117.01 in qualified money this season, the four-time World Champion is out for yet another win after placing second in the world standings in both 2020 and 2021. Last year, he placed second to Cole Patterson , who is also vying for that number one spot as he sits third ranked in the sport. A few big wins could push him over the edge, as Patterson trails Snedecor by less than $5,000. He’ll also have to beat nine-time NFSR qualifier Jess Tierney , who sits in second place in the rankings. The final showdown takes place at the NFSR, which will be held from Nov. 4-5 at the Kansas Star Arena in Mulvane, Kansas.

TIE-DOWN ROPING

PRCA RECAP

There are plenty of familiar faces in the top ten ranked tie-down ropers this year, including 2013 World Champion Shane Hanchey, 2019 World Champion Haven Meged, and three-time World Champion and 2017 all-around World Champion Tuf Cooper, just to name a few. But, the star of the show this year is 2020 World Champion Shad Mayfield, who’s having a heck of a year with ten event wins under his belt so far and $162,211.75 in earnings. It would be exhilarating to see Mayfield return to claim the World Champion title after finishing only 7th in the standings last year.

STEER WRESTLING

Photo: Clay Guardipee

Three-time World Champion Tyler Waguespack leads the pack once again in steer wrestling with $121,429.79 in earnings after wins at the San Angelo (Texas) Cinch Chute-Out, the Fiesta Days Rodeo (Spanish Fork, Utah), and the Snake River Stampede (Nampa, Idaho). At the 2021 NFR, he was the event runner-up, which netted him $213,248 to earn him the 2021 World Champion title. Clearly, he brought that energy into the 2022 season, where he sits more than $10,000 ahead of second-ranked Will Lummus. Still, should Lummus or third-place Stetson Jorgensen have a Waguespack-like run at the NFR, either of them could easily dethrone this season’s front-runner to earn that World Champion title.

TEAM ROPING 2021’s World Champion team roping header Kaleb Driggers stands at the top of the rankings with $192,113.29 for the season. His partner, Junior Nogueira , is also at the top of the rankings for heelers with the same amount of earnings, proving that the two remain the elite team roping duo they’ve been for the past few years. Second place for headers is Clay Tyran , who reunited with previous partner Jade Corkill after a run with Jake Long . Corkill is presently ranked fourth for heelers, while Long is second. Between Corkill and Long in third place is Buddy Hawkins , matched with Andrew Ward , who’s currently third in the rankings for headers. But there’s plenty more team roping action to come this season, and all eyes are on Tryan and Corkill to see if their pairing will be enough to surpass the dynamic duo of Driggers and Nogueira.

Jordan Briggs is having a heck of a year in the barrel racing scene, with $$175,875.84 in earnings. Though plenty of mainstays such as Donna Kay Rule, Brittany Pozzi Tonozzi, and Hailey Kinsel are within the top ten in the standings, they’ll have their work cut out for them in the coming months leading up to the NFR if they want to surpass Briggs’s whirlwind season. And, it looks like rookie Bayleigh Choate is well on her way to qualifying for the NFR, too, as she’s currently ranked tenth, above other well-known racers such as Ivy Seabens and Jessica Routier.

Martha Angelone has a commanding lead in breakaway roping, $95,992.98 in earnings and more than $30,000 ahead of second-place Erin Johnson. However, the women of breakaway won’t let Angelone take it without a fight. There’s still more than enough time for ropers like Lari Dee Guy, Taylor Hanchey, and Shelby Boisjoli to even out the score, stealing the number one spot from Angelone. The Wrangler National Finals Breakaway Roping will take place at South Point Arena & Equestrian Center in Las Vegas, Nov. 2930, as a precursor to the NFR at Thomas & Mack. The event features the top 15 women of breakaway coming together to compete for a $250,000 prize pool. That’s what’s happening in the PRCA. Wherever you are and whatever you’re planning, we hope to see you in December at the biggest rodeo event of the year.

J ordon Briggs is having quite a year. She’s presently the front-runner for the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association World Champion barrel racing title, with more than $175,875.84 in earnings as of mid-August. That puts her more than $57,000 ahead of second-ranked Wenda Johnson. Her fellow barrel racers have their work cut out for them if they want to try to surpass her earnings and claim the World Champion title this year.

Her stellar 2022 season run comes after she won the 2021 World Champion title, beating out three-time World Champion Hailey Kinsel. Briggs set a world record at the 2021 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo with ten clean runs in 136.82 seconds on her horse, Famous Lil Jet “Rollo.” She netted a bonus for winning the event average, raising her NFR earnings to $194,842 for a total of $297,460 throughout the 2021 season. Her lifetime earnings are over $1 Briggsmillion.went full force into 2022 with the same energy and effort she brought to the WNFR. Early in the season, she scored a big win at RodeoHouston for $60,000. She also took the average title at the NFR Open in Colorado Springs and placed second overall in that Barrelevent.racing is in her blood. Briggs is the daughter of Kristie Peterson, who won four WPRA barrel racing titles from 1994-1998.

Coate’s consistency is vital to her success. After a rough start to the season, things began to turn around for her at Rodeo Austin in March, where she scored a second-round win and placed third in the finals. She was also the top earner at Cowboy Christmas, which takes place in the time period around July 4, edging out Shelley Morgan and pocketing $25,506 for her efforts. Additionally, Choate earned a big win on her horse Hail to be Famous at the Ponoka Stampede, where she had a clean sweep that netted her $26,267.

A ROOKIE RISES TO THE OCCASION: BAYLEIGH CHOATE’S RACE TO THE TOP A newcomer to the professional scene, Bayleigh Choate is already making a splash in the barrel racing world. As the WPRCA 2022 Resistol Rookie of the Year front-runner, she’s raked in $78,473.04 throughout the season. The 19-year-old Georgiaborn superstar, now living in Fort Worth, has 65 rodeos under her belt for the season as of midAugust. She’s ranked 10th in the overall standings.

You can bet Choate will be a racer that people talk about for years. Choate earned the National Barrel Horse Association world champion title at age 16 and has only continued to improve as a racer since.

552022 VOLUME 2 | ABM

She and Boozer, the fan-favorite horse she’s ridden for many of her top placements, show no signs of slowing down. Choate is currently the only rookie in the top 10 in the 2022 barrel racing standings and is only behind longtime barrel racer Brittany Pozzi Tonozzi by a few thousand dollars in earnings.

And, with her earnings, it seems she’s well on her way to a spot at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo come December.

Fortunately, there’s still plenty of time for the women of rodeo to continue rope and ride their way into qualifying for the NFR and the NFBR.

Angelone also competes in team roping and tiedown roping, making her a triple threat in the arena. Clearly, she’s driven to be the best of the best and is working hard to earn the distinction of being 2022’s best breakaway roper.

The Stephenville, Texas, cowgirl, who won the inaugural National Finals Breakaway Roping in 2020 and claimed the reserve World Champion title that year, is having a remarkable season. But it was a big win at Fort Worth’sCowtown Coliseum in May that catapulted her to the top of the rankings. There, she earned $70,900 over three days at the 2022 Women’s Rodeo World Championship, with runs of 2.05 seconds and 2.04 seconds.

BREAKAWAY’S BREAKOUT YEAR: NFBR’S $250,000 PRIZE POOL Rodeo fans’ interest in breakaway continues to grow among the rodeo community. The number of rodeos featuring a breakaway event is steadily increasing as there’s more and more demand to see the women rope alongside the boys. Throughout 2022, more than 300 PRCA rodeos will have breakaway events. In a big win for women’s rodeo, fans can check out the ladies of breakaway at the 2022 National Finals Breakaway Roping in the days leading up to the WNFR. The big event takes place Nov. 29-30 at South Point in Las Vegas and will put the top 15 names in breakaway against one another for $250,000 in prize money over two days and ten rounds. The NFBR kicks off just before the WNFR, which runs Dec. 1-10 at the Thomas & Mack Center in ButVegas.even before then, cowgirls can look forward to the WPRA World Finals. That rodeo will be held in Waco, Texas, with events in barrels, breakaway, heading, heeling, and tie-down roping, and will run from Nov. 10-13 at the Extraco Event Center.

On the PRCA women’s breakaway circuit, Martha Angelone takes the lead with $95,992.98 in earnings as of mid-August. That’s more than $30,000 ahead of second-place Erin Johnson, who currently has $62,396.56 in qualified money. Always focused on progression, Angelone never hesitates to address her mistakes and constantly strives to improve.

Photo: Rod Connor Photo: Brian Gauk 572022 VOLUME 2 | ABM

But Connor will have to work hard if she wants to retain her spot as breakaway’s number one Rookie of the Year contender. A big win from Schiek or third-ranked Rookie of the Year candidate Bryana Lehrmann easily displace Connor. These ladies have made it clear they’re hungry for the title. And that’s a wrap on what’s happening in women’s rodeo. We wish the best of luck to all the ladies roping, riding, and chasing their rodeo dreams.

When it comes to breakaway’s Resistol Rookie of the Year competition, Josie Connor seems determined to claim her spot as number one. As of mid-August, she stood at $31,053.86 in earnings, more than $2000 ahead of second-place Tiffany Schiek. At only 18 years old, Connor celebrated a win and set an arena record with a 1.85-second run at the Days of ’47 Rodeo in Utah, beating out a record that HobbsCrawford previously set. She also won the 2022 BFI All-Girl Breakaway Championship title at Lazy E Arena in Guthrie, Oklahoma, taking home $11,000. Her finalround time of 3.74 seconds cinched her that victory.
