Event Overview Ride the Dragon The inaugural Hong Kong Moodle Moot 2012 was held at the Canadian International School of Hong Kong, on 20-21 September 2012, with over 120 attendees from around South East Asia and the Pacific.
Keynote Speakers Iain’s work life has centered on teaching and technologies (not necessarily at the same time). Since early 2004 Iain has been fortunate enough to be in positions Director of the Learning Technology Unit, Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, The University of Auckland and Director of the eLearning Pedagogical Support Unit, Centre for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning, The University of Hong Kong - that have combined these two aspects of his career. Iain is currently responsible for leading the implementation of The University of Hong Kong's eLearning Strategy. This means that Iain is proactive in operational leadership, operational management, managing change, designing and Dr Iain Doherty
developing professional learning opportunities for academic staff and in working collaboratively to develop a supportive eLearning community at The University of Hong Kong.
Martin is best known as the founder of Moodle, the popular free course management system used by millions of teachers around the world. As the executive director of Moodle Pty Ltd in Perth, Western Australia, he leads the team of software developers at the heart of the Moodle project and the global network of 54 Moodle Partner service companies that help provide funding for this independent open source software project. Martin has a mixed academic background with post-graduate degrees in Computer Science and Education, and continues to focus on researching how educators approach internet-based education. Workshops Bling Your Moodle This workshop focused on how to create more engaging courseware outside of standard Moodle design schemas. The workshop highlighted the use of standard Moodle tools in an "out of the square" manner to create authentic, engaging and effective courseware for use with children and young adults. Plenty of opportunities for informal networking were built into the program
Conference Venue Recognized as Hong Kong's Leading International School by the Hong Kong Business magazine's High Flyers campaign for four years, the Canadian International School of Hong Kong (CDNIS) is a non-profit school that provides a "throughtrain" education to students from Pre Reception (3 year olds) through to Grade 12 graduation. The school currently has just over 1800 students representing over 40 nationalities. Also considered as one of the leading schools in South East Asia, CDNIS is an IB World School fully authorized to deliver the International Baccalaureate's Diploma, Middle Years and Primary Years Programmes. The school is also authorized to grant credits toward completion of the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), thus providing a "dual passport" for graduates to gain entry into top universities throughout the world. CDNIS is located on the south side of Hong Kong Island in Aberdeen overlooking the spectacular backdrop of the Lamma Channel and surrounding islands. Students are nurtured, inspired and challenged in an award-winning designed campus with superb facilities, including the spectacular 606-seat Leo Lee Arts Centre, which opened in May 2008.

Logistics Catering A catering menu was created by the CDNIS in-school caterer, Compass Chartwells. The menu was developed with a wide range of visitors and potential dietary requirements in mind. Two special events were also organized for the conference; a Jumbo Restaurant chinese set menu which was offered to all conference attendees on Friday evening, and an optional Jaspas Junk cruise on the Saturday evening.

The CDNIS in-school bussing contractor, Kwoon Chung Motors, was engaged for the transportation service for the conference. The conference hotel, Dorsett Regency in Kennedy Town, was included in one of the regular routes to and from the school, as well as our regular city stops (Admiralty MTR A and the DB Ferry Pier).
Accommodation In May 2012, the Dorsett Regency Hotel, Kennedy Town, was selected as the conference hotel. The hotel package of $1300/ night, inclusive of 10% service charge, included a fruit platter, newspaper, wi-fi as well as a free shuttle service to Macau and Airport Express.

Support Structures Digital Ambassadors Twelve students from the CDNIS Digital Ambassadors team provided various levels of technical and program support. One of the highlights of the conference was the student plenary discussion in which six students shared their perspectives on technology mediated learning. Marketing and Promotion Website The conference website was powered by Moodle and developed in cooperation with Pukunui Technology Hong Kong. Visit http://moodlemoot.hk/ for more information. Social Media Twitter was leveraged successfully at each stage of the conference for marketing, discussion and postconference feedback. The official the hashtag was #hkmoot12. Picasa Web was used as a repository for images from the conference. The Digital Ambassadors took photographs on iPad and email these directly to the web album. A moderator then filtered the images for appropriateness. UStream was used to ‘live stream’ and record the events scheduled in the LLAC. The recordings can be view at: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/hong-kong-moodlemoot-2012 T-Shirts Participants, student helpers and event organisers received a branded T-Shirt.
