Dear Friends,
T
his was a wonderful year at Sacred Heart! Throughout the year we shared experiences that were amazing, interesting, thought-provoking, happy, moving, and challenging. It was a year that included quite a few new faces among the administration, and a year that included welcoming back alumnae throughout the year. And it was a year in which our students shined brightly in their studies, in their performances, on the athletic field, in their community service work, in all that they tried. Our alumnae visited us throughout the year. In fact, we started the year with a visit from Roseanna Garay Powers ’01 who spoke at our October faculty in-service meeting about internet safety; crimes against children and the roles schools play in helping to prevent or recognize offenses. And we ended our year at Graduation with Mary Horstmann ’00, who currently serves as Chief of Staff in the office of the Deputy Managing Director of HHS in the City of Philadelphia, as our Graduation speaker. We are so proud of all of our alumnae. Our new administrators have learned and embraced the vision of Madeleine Sophie while finding their path in this dynamic community. And throughout the year, our students have focused and committed themselves to living out the Five Goals and Criteria of Sacred Heart. Sacred Heart Academy is a special place. In fact, I think it is a sacred place. It is a place where our students know they are loved and where they can share who they are. I hope you enjoy reading this issue of the Vue. It is full of school news and alumnae updates. I think it captures the energy and excitement that is found on our campus. Sincerely,
Deirdre V. Cryor Head of School

Athletics Highlights 2017-2018
GO HEART! Natasha Szipszky ’21 won her first varsity tennis match leading Sacred Heart to a win against Gwynedd Mercy Academy on Friday, September 8. Congratulations to Natasha and the tennis team. Hannah Seifried ’18 was featured in the news for her clutch field hockey goal helping SHA defeat opponent Villa Joseph Marie. Congratulations on our AACA league golf All-Star, Kat Kinslow ’18. Congratulations to Juliana Michniak, ’18. Juliana was selected as the Main Line Girls Athlete of the Week. To be selected as Main Line Girls Athlete of the Week, a studentathlete must first be nominated by her coach. On the volleyball court, the senior outside hitter and co-captain was a key reason for the success of the Lions streak of wins. Juliana was an AACA all-star, a member of the All-District 1 team (Class A), an All Main Line second team selection, and the Lions’ MVP (led team in kills, digs and blocks) as Sacred Heart finished second in the District 1 tournament (Class A). Juliana was on the varsity basketball team for Sacred Heart, and the senior class president. In addition to Juliana’s academic and athletic prowess, Juliana was a leader in Sacred Heart’s Community Service Corps (CSC) designing and implementing events that help those less fortunate. According to Juliana, “Community service has been a large and important part of my high school education, and probably the most rewarding.” The cross country team received second place in the AACA League champs in October, 2017. The team earned a trip to districts at Lehigh University. Kayleigh Doyle ’20 led the team with three from Sacred Heart finishing in the top six. SHA volleyball team won the semi-final district game in October 2017. The cross country team won the district title. Juliana Michniak ’18 was selected to the AACA All Star Team in volleyball. 4 Vue du Cœur SUMMER 2018

Where our girls are going
Saturday, September 15, 2018 marks the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Academy of the Sacred Heart in St. Charles, Missouri. Founded by St. Rose Philippine Duchesne, the school symbolizes the global essence of Sacred Heart. To celebrate this occasion and honor Philippine’s visionary spirit, the entire Sacred Heart community will join together in acts of service around the world on this day. As members of a Sacred Heart family, we are called to a social awareness which impels to action. This day will allow students, faculty, staff, families, alumnae, board members, and friends to serve others and share God’s love with our greater communities. Sacred Heart Academy Bryn Mawr will host several service projects on campus, as well as a few others at locations in the greater Philadelphia area. We enthusiastically invite you to participate. Visit our website later this summer for registration and stay tuned for more information. #SacredHeartService #CoeurValues #WeAreSacredHeart Email Ms. Kelly Weber (kelly.weber@SHAbrynmawr. org) to learn more.

Lower School Service Workshop
“Rock on Rubes” SACRED HEART GOAL 3
a social awareness which impels to action
7,017
HOURS In total, our Upper School students completed 7,017 hours of service. On average, that is 42 hours per student. Many students have well over 50 hours.
Lower School students participated in a service workshop and worked on a craft project with the organization, “Rock on Rubes.” They decided to gift their creations to the third and fourth grades of our Network School, Stuart Country Day School in Princeton, NJ. During the workshop the girls learned about the organization “Rock on Rubes” and how it was created in honor of their classmate, Ruby who was born with multiple physical challenges. When young Ruby wondered why people looked at her differently, her mom explained to her that God had chosen her to be extraordinary so he sprinkled an extra bucket of pixie dust down on her when she was born. The organization now teaches others to “Rock the dust you’ve got,” meaning to embrace what makes you special, unique, and extraordinary. Rock on Rubes spreads their message along with the idea of passing kindness on to others when they least expect it. After learning about the organization, the girls made necklaces with five beads to represent the five Goals of the Sacred Heart. Four beads are made of rock after the name of the organization, and one bead is bright pink or red to make Goal 3, “help those who need us” stand out. Ruby’s mom, Tyl Sadoff delivered the necklaces to the third and fourth grade at Stuart Country Day School on Valentine’s Day.
$1,730 Lenten Challenge: Change for Uganda. As a school community, we collected $1,730 dollars. Despite the fact that we had interrupted schedules in February and March due to snow. It is enough money to send two high school girls to school for a year and have leftover money to support e-readers, lunches, or the health clinic in Sacred Heart schools in Kenya and Uganda.
Courageous Conversations On Friday, March 23, thirty-six students and seven faculty members came together for the first meeting of Courageous Conversations. In response to a tremendous interest in current events throughout this school year, teachers Kerri Schuster and Kelly Weber offered an evening of dialogue training and discussion in what they refer to as a “brave space.” The event began with a Dialogue Walk in which students formed a circle and shared some of their own beliefs and experiences by stepping forward into the circle. Other activities included reflection on the word “dialogue,” completion of an identity wheel and lessons on active listening. The second half of the evening gave students time to use their communication skills in small groups on topics such as race, gender and gun control. The power of the event was felt by all. One student commented, “I felt an overwhelming amount of respect and support for one another within each discussion…I feel like I have a better understanding of my position in America and what I can do in order to implement change in our country.” Another student noted, “My biggest takeaways are that my concerns are shared by like-minded girls in our SHA community and that I’m not alone in wanting to make change happen.”
Third and Fourth Grade students at Stuart Country Day School were surprised with hand-made necklaces by our SHA Lower School.
National Walk Out Day

Betty Rexford Buckland ’57
The Ultimate Lifer FROM DAUGHTER CHRISSY BUCKLAND SCHWARZ ’86
B
etty Rexford Buckland ’57 will be retiring this year after a lifetime of loyalty and dedication to Sacred Heart. There is a line in our school song; Loyal to Sacred Heart, you will not find another graduate more honored to say she is a child of the Sacred Heart. Born in Philadelphia and raised two blocks from Sacred Heart – Overbrook, Betty attended Sacred Heart starting in the first grade. At the age of six her mother passed away. Her wish for her two girls (Barbara White Rexford ’55) was to attend Sacred Heart because she knew “the Nuns would take good care of us.” So in 1945, just after the war, Betty began her journey with Sacred Heart. Betty has so many loving memories of her time as a student and then as an employee. Most of the memories revolve around sports! Betty played field hockey and basketball at Sacred Heart. Well, she did not just play, she excelled at athletics! Some of her favorite times were spent competing and representing Sacred Heart. When asked what Betty loved most about her Sacred Heart education she responded, “I loved everything!” Betty graduated from Sacred Heart in 1957 and went on to attend night school at St. Joseph’s University while working for her father and coaching at Sacred Heart during the day. She married George Buckland, Jr. in 1966 and had four children; Wendy Buckland ’85, Chrissy Buckland

Forever Caring, Forever Faithful, Forever Loving, Forever A Child Of The Sacred Heart Mom, we are so proud of you! We Love You! George, Wendy, Chrissy, Buck, Tim, Cara, Pete, Jen, Brendan, Sean, Gracie, Peter, Emma, Margo, Timothy, Luke, Jude, Keeva and Annie
Schwarz ’86, George Buckland III and Tim Buckland. She was so proud to see her girls attend Sacred Heart and after a call from former Headmaster, Jim Breene, Betty found herself employed at the Bryn Mawr campus working as Alumnae Director. She continuously worked with alumnae, keeping them connected and informed about Sacred Heart. The phone-a-thon, Heartcoming and addressing the graduating classes each year were just a few of her duties. Fast forward 40 years and Betty is ready to step away from The Heart with much love and joy for the experience she has had “on the hill.” Many more fond memories come to mind when asked about her time at Sacred Heart. As a student she loved the study halls where the grades were combined and she could sit among upper classmen. She remembers the cute little blue pinafores she wore as a child and the trips to Eden Hall to play against them. She fondly remembers Mother Murray and Mother Kirby. She treasures her wonderful upbringing and When asked the valuable lessons the Nuns taught her and her classmates. what Betty Congé was different in her day; the entire Red or White team loved most would hide! The other team would search for them, down by about her the barn at the back of the property or around the campus. They had to race back and ring the bell. She also said students knew Sacred Heart when to change classes when a hand held bell was rung. In Lower education she School, a “Beetle” was assigned to the classroom to stay after class responded, and erase the boards and straighten the desks. The students loved ‘I loved this job because they could be late for the next class! Class rings were given out one-by-one by visiting Reverend Mother’s parlor; everything!’” not a ceremony like we do today. She also loved watching her CHRISSY BUCKLAND daughters compete for Sacred Heart in various sports and was SCHWARZ ’86 often heard “helping” the referees with their calls! Representing Sacred Heart, Betty has traveled to numerous states and attended countless conventions. She loves sharing what goes on at Bryn Mawr as well as learning about other schools in our network of Sacred Heart Schools. She is still friendly with so many alumnae and personally sends notes to all! Five out of the ten classmates from the class of 1957 still get together once a month for lunch. Betty looks forward to this time with her friends as it keeps their Sacred Heart connection alive! Please join us in congratulating Betty on an AMAZING career at Sacred Heart! A student, an athlete, a fan, a colleague, A LIFER!

FROM DAUGHTER WENDY BUCKLAND ’85
T
he first memory of being introduced to my Mother’s world of The Sacred Heart was at a very young age. She kept her yearbooks in her childhood bedroom at my grandparent’s home. I would sit on the floor when we would visit and study them. We went to Overbrook Day and I remember thinking – Mom went to school in a castle?! Overbrook was mesmerizing and overwhelming. We moved to Connecticut and Mom was a referee for high school and college field hockey games. We would all pile in the car for the adventures and sit on the sidelines watching her. She refereed at Greenwich…a second introduction to Sacred Heart. Another castle! Are all Sacred Heart schools like this? We made our way back to Pennsylvania and settled in Malvern. And shortly thereafter, I was on my way to Sacred Heart. But when Mom dropped me for my ‘visit’ – we were not at the castle in Overbrook. We were standing in front of red doors, at someone’s home. And so it began – being introduced to a most unusual educational experience. Learning not only school work… My respect for but traditions, in a most untraditional magical place. Where her admiration were my parents sending me? This castle, was altogether different and unconditional and incredibly unique. I learned very quickly, in this new dedication and environment – everyone knows Mom! Mom was back at SHA! Contributing and wearing love for Sacred countless hats over so many years. And Bryn Mawr Heart knows no blossomed into The Overbrook – Bryn Mawr – Eden Hall boundaries.” Alumnae Association. She always made sure to include WENDY BUCKLAND ’85 everyone. My respect for her admiration and unconditional dedication and love for Sacred Heart knows no boundaries. Returning as an alumna allowed me to see everything through her eyes. She asked me to be a sub for a meeting at Doane Stuart/Kenwood with her years ago. That opened the serious floodgates of AASH adventure. Since then, we’ve been nearly everywhere together – Boston, The Cape, Forest Ridge, Greenwich, Stuart, Bloomfield Hills, Villa, Josephinum, Flourissant, Woodlands, St. Charles, Carrollton, Chicago, and Los Angeles – just to name a few. We were galivanting to conferences and meeting up with other alumnae from all over the world. But by far, these are the two most poignant memories for me: In 2013, at Duchesne in Omaha, Mom was awarded with the most prestigious Cor Unum from AASH. This national award is bestowed for not only excellence in work, but more importantly for lifelong loyalty and service to The Sacred Heart. She asked me to make her introductions. The other is when she handed me my high school diploma in 1985. Even in retirement, this wonderful Lifer will never ever retire her compassion, dedication and love because she will always be a Child of The Sacred Heart.

Betty and I met years ago at AASH gatherings: San Francisco, St Louis, Detroit, New York, and Bryn Mawr. We always attended the “Regional Meeting” and caught up on the latest news. An immediate connection is that my mother, Hildreth Meière painted the altarpieces for the Chapel at Overbrook. You still have St. Joseph at Bryn Mawr that I saw when I attended and spoke at an AASH meeting a few years ago. Louise Dunn Eden Hall, 1947 as well as 91st Street 1947, and Greenwich 1948 alumna Betty and I bonded instantly over our love of Notre Dame. When I first started with AASH, I remember Wendy telling me her mom was a huge ND fan, and we’d get along great. And of course, that was true! Sacred Heart AND Notre Dame... what’s not to love? Congrats Betty – and Go Irish! Maggie Kaspura DASH ’85, ND ’89, AASH National Office Director I first met Betty about 25 years ago at an AASH conference and we’ve been friends ever since. We were both Eastern Regional Reps from our respective alumnae groups so we’re often in the same meetings. We’ve had lots of fun together! Betty is always ready with a helping hand, friendly to all, understanding, spiritual, resourceful, patient, kind, caring and generous. I hope for a wonderful retirement for you and hope you’ll continue coming to AASH conferences so we can get together every few years! I’m sure you’ll be missed at Bryn Mawr. Judy Conley, Sacred Heart Network friend Betty Buckland, who when you meet her, is the kind of woman who “oozes” all things Sacred Heart. Her love for the Society, the nuns, the school, and the traditions is evident in all she says and does. I remember when one of the staff had made a verbal commitment to support the education of children in Haiti and was, for whatever reason, unable to support that project. Betty, along with her sister, Barbara, stepped up the plate and provided the needed funds. Her comment was, “That’s not the Sacred Heart way of doing things. We do what we will say we will do.” We loved sharing the AASH Conferences with Betty and Barbara and especially enjoyed the side trips we took with the two of them. There were always many laughs and good meals shared together. How Bryn Mawr will miss her. Enjoy your retirement, Betty, and the time spent with your family. You deserve it! Sue Whalen, Sacred Heart Network friend
In June, Sacred Heart offered best wishes to those faculty and staff members who are retiring this year. The faculty and staff gathered at our last in-service day to thank and congratulate their colleagues: Deacon Jim Dalton, Mary Lee FitzPatrick, Christine Kinslow, Theresa McCoy, and Eileen McEntee. All were lauded for their dedication to their work; for their commitment to students; and for their love of Sacred Heart. The tissues were plentiful in the Chapel that morning! We look forward to seeing many of our retired friends on the substitute list, at school functions and at reunions!
