Organisation Kringum

Description “Kringum” (Around) is the most popular app in Iceland today, and it’s often used as a family game to read and learn about the places you are travelling to. Karl Thoroddsen is a self-employed computer scientist with a background in history studies, who specialises both in apps and underlying systems. Karl, like the rest of the world, had to be at home a lot during covid. He wanted to share information and knowledge from history with the public. He used the time to design an app that identifies where you are located and brings up stories, locations and maps of the area. The instruction is both in the form of audio readings, written language and pictures. He asked local people for stories and used his foundation in history.

CASES ANALYSIS REPORT: EUROPEAN ENTREPRENEURSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

“Kringum” contains over 12 thousand locations, interesting stories and detailed information about places that appear on your iPhone or Android phone when you travel around Iceland. During the creation of the app, Karl talked to many people to gather information, for example, The Icelandic Tourist Board from whom he received a lot of data that could be transferred directly into the app, and from the National Country Survey, he received names of places. Kringum includes close to a thousand folktales, stories from settlers, descriptions of events and information about famous people who lived in certain places or were born there. Hundreds of stories are available to you in the places where they happened. Every fjord in Iceland and all its interiors are full of stories of elves, ghosts and trolls. Kringum teaches you about the events that have shaped the nation, from battles to eruptions. The history of the country comes alive in the eyes of the user. The Kringum app serves as an example of how time was used during covid constraints to launch a new business opportunity. This is also an example of how important networking and solidarity are for such work, the passion is contagious. Success factors The app will be offered in more languages. An English version will be published this autumn and tourism operators will be able to buy in as a location. As an example, if you are driving into Siglufjörður, one of the possibilities would be to find a restaurant or a museum that would be advertised on the app. Karl's family helped a lot with the development but his wife especially helped with registration related to the country's wildlife. Karl's father proofread all the text and his son designed the logo, promotional material and design of the app. Challenges Kringum is a very good tool for promoting knowledge of the culture and uniqueness of each part of the country. It’s as if a guide is sitting next to you while showing you around the area. The app helps maintain and transfer knowledge between generations about the country’s history and culture. It’s easy to use regardless of age or technical knowledge.
