Abstract - Floods are one of the most expensive natural disasters. Theoretically, the water cycle offers three options in reducing flood risks 1. Storing water in the hinterland, before it reaches major rivers (Natural Water Retention Measures) 2. Retaining floods upstream to vulnerable cities with dams or polders (space for the river) 3. Preparing cities in a way that they are adapted to inundations (resilient cities) These three options to reduce flood risk in a catchment area are not entirely new, but the implementation is often hampered at a local level. Flood risk management needs to address land use, or rather land users. Implementing measures for flood retention and resilience on private land is crucial. This seminar will discuss approaches and indetify potential research gaps.
