Another season of education and all of the changes, challenges, excitement, and opportunities that come with it. Dean Bennett, who retired last year, noted: “North Idaho College is always changing. It’s constantly evolving. Every time you thought you could catch your breath, the college would move into the next stage of growth.” His words are simple and eloquent, but then, isn’t change what education is all about? Over the past 18 months, North Idaho College has experienced tremendous change and more is on the horizon. Last year, we saw significant administrative and leadership changes with the addition of President Joe Dunlap and three new vice presidents. Two more top-level administrators are retiring this year. In November, two new trustees were elected. New individuals and new programs bring new ideas and the potential to re-explore old ideas. Significant expansion in course offerings at the Sandpoint facility and the new aerospace program provide exciting potential for our North Idaho community. The evaluation of new professional-technical facilities, the possibility of a new athletics facility to replace Christianson Gym, and a student recreation facility are being explored. After several years of adjustments to accommodate record growth in enrollment linked to a poor economy, the economy is improving and we are now seeing a leveling off and even decline in enrollment. All of these influences and more will provide challenges and opportunities for North Idaho College and our community. The trustees invite and encourage each and every member of our college family and the community we serve to join us as we address these and other issues in finding ways to improve our collective needs. Laying the groundwork for the future 7
There’s a time machine on the campus of North Idaho College. Step inside and instantly transport to 1878, when Fort Sherman was a bustling center of activity around which the city of Coeur d’Alene grew. Beside Winton Hall, past the white archway and the cannon, sits the powder magazine, where weapons such as rifles, cannons, and gunpowder were stored in the days of Fort Sherman. It’s a small, unassuming building, but it’s one of the last surviving elements of the fort, a sentinel of Coeur d’Alene history. From the floorboards to the rafters, everything in the powder magazine is just as it was in the 1800s. Well, except for the Wi-Fi. That’s new. NIC Director of Facilities Operations Mike Halpern has wanted to restore the powder magazine for 26 years. Now, after nearly three years of work, his vision is becoming a reality. “For years, I’ve been trying to convince the administration that we could do something pretty spectacular,” he said. “I’ve always thought NIC should take this building back and do something for NIC, to have a display showing the history of what happened on these grounds.” While it was operated by the Museum of North Idaho, the powder magazine’s original wooden floor was covered with linoleum. Its rafters were hidden behind an acoustic ceiling. Sheetrock insulation was laid over the original brick. It didn’t look like a powder magazine, but all the original pieces were there, waiting to be revealed. The restoration effort began in 2010. Windows and doors have been reconstructed as they were, and much of the original architecture has been preserved. The powder magazine, which is open for visitors today, is as close to its original state as possible. “We wanted to bring it back, in all its glory, as it was in the 1800s,” said Rhonda Smalley, NIC Copy Center operator, who was charged with researching and designing exhibits in the powder magazine. The project is about more than just restoring a historic building. It’s about making the history of Coeur d’Alene’s Fort Grounds area accessible to visitors. In addition to serving as a connection to the past, the powder magazine will also be available as a meeting space and study area, complete with Wi-Fi. “We want to bring that history back,” Smalley said. “We have a footprint of something that’s been here since the beginning of time. It’s important that people know it’s here.”

REGIONAL REACH Sandpoint community raises over $100,000 for lab 9

Because of the generosity and support of the community, students will be able to complete a two-year associate’s degree from NIC at Sandpoint without having to travel to NIC’s main Coeur d’Alene campus. The community surpassed fundraising goals after just a few months, raising well over the $100,000 needed to retrofit the space and purchase the furnishings, equipment and technology, and supplies necessary for the science lab. Donations for the lab came from a mix of individuals and regional businesses. Pictured are James and Geraldine Lewis, who are just a few of many locals who contributed to make the Sandpoint lab a reality.
North Idaho College students, employees, and alumni participated in community celebrations all throughout North Idaho in 2013. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s 2013 Coeur d’Alene Basin Superfund Job Training Initiative held its graduation in May in Kellogg. NIC’s Workforce Training Center worked with the EPA to develop the program, which provides training and certification to prospective workers for the cleanup of the Coeur d’Alene Basin Superfund Site.
Students from NIC’s Welding program created a 15-foot, 500-pound bike rack for NIC at Sandpoint as one of several welding projects created for the community.

NIC celebrated several graduations: Basic Patrol Academy; pinning ceremonies for registered nursing, practical nursing, and radiography technology graduates; a group trained through the U.S. EPA’s 2013 Coeur d’Alene Basin Superfund Job Training Initiative; and multiple Adult Basic Education and GED graduations.

In 2013, North Idaho College entered into a partnership with Spokane College of English Language (SCEL) to encourage student transfer opportunities and recruit students. SCEL students hail from all parts of the globe and have come to the U.S. to first learn the language and then potentially earn college degrees. 11
Aerospace Center of Excellence takes flight With a nearly $3 million federal grant and support from community partners, NIC was able to create the Aerospace Center of Excellence in 2013, which is expected to create 520 new jobs by 2015. “This is something where we are going to look back in a few years and see the jobs and opportunities created by this grant and know that this (the grant announcement) was the catalyst for all of that,� said Tim Komberec, CEO and president of Empire Airlines. The core curriculum will be in the areas of general aviation, airframe composites, and non-destructive testing, as well expanding NIC’s current machining program. The proposal will target Trade Adjustment Assistance workers, displaced workers needing retraining, veterans, and the general student population. NIC is the only college in Idaho to receive grant funding from the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training initiative, which was designed to promote skills development and employment opportunities. The $2.97 million grant is intended to meet the workforce demands of the aerospace industry in North Idaho and help veterans and displaced workers in need of retraining. It will have a $28.8 million annual impact to the local economy with average job salary estimates of $43,500, according to the Idaho Department of Labor.
A record 1,100 students were eligible to graduate from North Idaho College during the 2013 commencement ceremony in May 2013, and of those, more than 400 chose to walk across the stage to receive their degree or certificate. www.nic.edu/aerospace

Five North Idaho College students earned national honors at the Business Professionals of America (BPA) competition in Orlando, Fla. NIC’s BPA chapter students joined more than 6,000 conference delegates from accross the country. The NIC chapter also earned multiple regional and local awards in 2013. 13

Staff members from The Sentinel newspaper raked in awards this year, winning first place for General Excellence in a college newspaper from the Idaho Press Club and multiple individual awards. The Sentinel was also honored by the Society of Professional Journalists in Region 10, winning several Mark of Excellence awards, including Best All-Around Non-Daily Newspaper. The Sentinel and staff also won Best in Show for two-year school newspapers.
North Idaho College’s Collision Repair Technology program placed nationally at the 2013 SkillsUSA championship in Kansas City in June 2013. Richard Schwemmer (left) placed eighth in the nation in the Auto Refinishing competition and Josh Hartt placed second in the Collision Repair competition. In addition, students in several of NIC’s Trades and Industry programs took home six gold, silver, and bronze medals from the annual Idaho SkillsUSA competition in Nampa.
Eight NIC students decided to forego the typical spring break this year in order to travel to Portland and help homeless people. The students immersed themselves in the Alternative Spring Break experience, being dropped off downtown Portland without any food or money. The life-changing trip was coordinated with the help of the charitable organization Bridgetown, Inc.

Michelle Bristow named New Century Scholar 15 15
North Idaho College student Michelle Bristow was named the top-scoring student from Idaho, earning her the honor of CocaCola New Century Scholar. Bristow was presented with a $2,000 scholarship and plaque from the Coca-Cola Foundation and Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation while being recognized at the annual Phi Theta Kappa President’s Breakfast in April of 2013 in San Francisco. “Being the recipient of this award has reinforced my aspirations and dedication toward my education. I am sincerely honored and humbled by the recognition and support I have received,” Bristow said. “Thank you to North Idaho College and all of the people involved with helping me along my journey.” After graduating from NIC, Bristow plans to transfer to Eastern Washington University to study for a degree in speech pathology. Her daughter, Kaytlynn, was born with bi-lateral neural sensory hearing loss. Bristow became interested in speech pathology after she watched how helpful the field was for her daughter. Bristow earned the highest score in the state at the All-USA Community College Academic Team competition, for which 1,800 applications were received this year. Fifty community college students from the United States, Canada, and the Federated States of Micronesia have been named 2013 New Century Scholars – receiving a total of $100,000 in scholarships. The New Century Scholars Program is sponsored by The CocaCola Foundation, Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation, Phi Theta Kappa, and the American Association of Community Colleges.

New Century Scholars are the highest scoring students in each state, plus one student from Canada and one additional student chosen from among one of the remaining seven sovereign nations where Phi Theta Kappa is represented internationally. “We appreciate the support of the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation and The Coca-Cola Foundation to recognize the outstanding academic achievement and leadership accomplishments of these outstanding community college students,” said Phi Theta Kappa’s Executive Director Dr. Rod Risley. “These scholarships provided by organizations like CocaCola make the goal of college completion possible – especially during these challenging economic times.” Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society is the largest honor society in American higher education with more than 1,285 chapters on two-year and community college campuses.

Counselor of the Year Gail Laferriere, North Idaho College Career Services assistant director, was named the 2013 Counselor of the Year by the Idaho Counseling Association. Laferriere was presented the award at the ICA annual conference in January of 2013. The ICA award is given to one person each year who exemplifies the model of an ideal counselor with the recipient demonstrating excellent rapport with clients, counselors, and coworkers. Laferriere has worked at NIC for 19 years. When she first moved to Idaho in 1993, NIC had no Career Center, so she began the process of creating and developing the career development program and center in 1994. That program has been lauded as the best in the state and region.

CARDINAL golf The men’s golf team finished seventh at the NJCAA national championship preview and 22nd at the NJCAA Division I national golf championship, both held in Lubbock, Texas. Austin Westphal became the second player in NIC history to be named as an All-American. The women’s golf team earned its best finish ever with a ninth-place finish at the 2013 NJCAA national tournament in Mesa, Ariz. The Lady Cardinals earned top 5 finishes in several tournaments in their most successful season ever, and also earned NJCAA Academic All-American recognition with a team GPA of 3.31.

The men’s soccer team made its third consecutive qualifying trip to the NJCAA District playoffs, and the seventh trip in eight seasons.
The men’s basketball team (26-5) was ranked as high as ninth in the NJCAA this year and coach Jared Phay got his 200th career win at NIC. Jalil Abdul Bassit was selected NJCAA All-American honorable mention.
The Cardinals were defeated in district semifinals 3-1 by Western Wyoming, a national tournament qualifier.
Seven Cardinals from the men’s basketball team signed with an NCAA Division 1 program this year including James Webb with Boise State, Chris Sarbaugh with San Diego, Jalil Abdul-Bassit with Oregon University, Mike Middlebrooks with Illinois State, and Kaj Sherman and Keon Lewis with the University of Texas San Antonio.
wrestling NIC’s wrestling team claimed the 14th NJCAA wrestling championship in school history. The Cardinals qualified 10 wrestlers for the NJCAA tournament and came away with seven AllAmericans including Ryan Zumwalt (165), VJ Giulio (197), Jarrett Morrill (141), Brock Banta (125), Mike Carreon (133), Jeremy Golding (149), and Caleb Rivera (184). The team was ranked No. 1 throughout the season and finished with a 13-1 record in duals. This year’s NJCAA championship marks the fourth for NIC Head Coach Pat Whitcomb, who was earlier named the 2013 Region Coach of the Year.
ATHLETICS volleyball The No. 7-ranked volleyball team wrapped up the 2012 season with an eighth place finish at the NJCAA Division 1 national volleyball tournament in West Plains, Mo., and a 26-8 record for the season. Yang Yang was selected second team NJCAA AllAmerican. The Cardinals were honored with several 2012 Scenic West Athletic Conference volleyball post season honors: Yang Yang was selected to the first team, Kaitlyn Molloy and Brooklynn Bradbury were named second team, and Rosie Robinson and Shelby Lausen earned honorable mention.

The women’s soccer team finished its regular season unbeaten in the last nine games for a 9-3-2 regular season record.
The women’s basketball team finished as cochampions of the Scenic West Athletic Conference, completing the regular season 27-3 overall and 12-3 in the SWAC.

The women’s basketball team earned NJCAA team Academic All-American honors and seven players signed scholarships to four-year colleges, including Mollie Kramer, Danika Johnson, Angela Woods, Hannah Love, Aimee Durbidge, Kabri Emerson, and Katie Buskey.
The softball team took third in the Region 18 tournament, with three players earning regional honors: Emily Perlich received first team AllRegion honors while Kelsey LaVaute and Shelby Carter received second team All-Region. Shelby Carter signed a letter of commitment to play at NCAA Division I University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Softball also earned team Academic All-American honors with a GPA of 3.26.

NIC Athletics Hall of Fame This spring, the North Idaho College Athletics Department inducted its fifth class into the NIC Athletics Hall of Fame. The 2013 inductees include: Mike Nyquist – Baseball: Considered one of the best clutch hitters in NIC history, Nyquist tied the NIC record for most RBIs in a season at the time with 48. Nyquist batted .333 as a freshman in 1986, while leading the Cardinals to a 27-14 record. He became more of a power hitter as a sophomore with 10 home runs, 48 RBI, and a .301 batting average, helping NIC to one of the best records in school history at 32-12. Pat Whitcomb – Wrestling: Whitcomb holds the distinction of being the only Cardinal to become a two-time national champion and be named as the NJCAA Most Outstanding Wrestler. Whitcomb captured back-to-back national titles in 1986 and 1987, and NIC won two team national championships during Whitcomb’s tenure. Whitcomb is currently the head wrestling coach at NIC, where he has led the Cardinals to four national championships. 1987 Women’s Cross Country Team: The 1987 team captured the first women’s national championship in NIC history. Members of the 1987 national championship team include: Roxanne (Jantz) Brown, Audrey Caren, Diane Armstrong, Jackie Harris, Diana Sisk, Cora Carroll, and Chris Hauger. The Cardinal cross country teams had several high national tournament finishes before bringing home the title in 1987.

The North Idaho College athletics program reached another milestone in school history in the 2012-2013 season, earning the No. 1 ranking in three different sports: wrestling, volleyball, and women’s basketball. Wrestling held the No. 1 ranking the entire season and claimed NIC’s second national championship in three seasons, following women’s basketball in 2011. NIC continues to be a standout in the competitive Scenic West Athletic Conference (SWAC) and the nation earning several National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national tournament bids this season (in men’s and women’s golf, volleyball, and women’s basketball) as well as academic individual and team All-American distinction.

Gathering Garden NIC has partnered with the Kootenai Environmental Alliance to use land for the Gathering Garden – an all-volunteer effort to build an urban farming and garden education center. Kootenai Environmental Alliance hopes to transform what started as a slash pile into a gathering place, a site for education about organic gardening, said Adrienne Cronebaugh, executive director of KEA. “We want to connect people with the food that feeds them,” Cronebaugh said. “We need to be conscious of our local food web.” Garry Stark, NIC assistant director of Facilities Operations, said the Gathering Garden will help faculty by expanding their curriculum. Herbs grown in the garden can be used by students in the culinary program, for instance. A pumpkin patch will be used by the Children’s Center. But the garden will be more than a college resource, Stark said. It will be a community resource, too. Much of the food grown in the Gathering Garden will go to local food banks. Community members will have the opportunity to work in the garden in exchange for some of the food grown there, or to buy food from the garden.

After getting her educational start at North Idaho College, alumna Samantha Jernstrom continues to be an outstanding student in Boise and, now, has her sights set on Washington D.C. Jernstrom started her college career at NIC as a dual credit student, overcoming many personal obstacles including spending five years in the state foster care system. She received an NIC Foundation scholarship that helped provide the resources she needed to graduate in 2011. She currently attends Boise State University and was one of 16 college students from across the nation chosen to spend the summer on Capitol Hill as part of the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute’s (CCAI) Foster Youth Internship (FYI) program. Jernstrom is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in social work with a minor in psychology at Boise State.
