Matt Dann Cultural Centre 2014 Season

Season 2014 Presented by the Town of Port Hedland The Matt Dann Cultural Centre is a quality Town of Port Hedland facility shared with Hedland Senior High School. The Town of Port Hedland strives to enrich the cultural choices for the community with an annual calendar of vibrant stage shows and movies. Since its opening in 1988, the Matt Dann Cultural Centre has provided Hedland audiences with the opportunity of sharing captivating and unique experiences with artists and performers from all over the world. The Town of Port Hedland is proud to present its 2014 season for the Matt Dann Cultural Centre, provided for your entertainment and captured in this brochure.

Welcome Welcome to your 2014 season at the Matt Dann Cultural Centre! The Matt Dann Cultural Centre was officially opened in 1988 and twenty six years later, we are still bringing the latest and greatest entertainment to your doorstep. In the last twelve months, we have opened our doors to over 11,000 patrons and we are proud of the magic that’s been taking place inside our four walls. 2013 was a time of great change at the Matt Dann with our long awaited behind-the-scenes technical upgrade coming to completion in May 2013. This entrance into the new age included a state of the art digital cinema system, a high quality winch down movie screen, winch down lighting trusses, new lighting stock and lighting desks. ‘That sounds great, but what does this all mean for me?’ you might ask. What it means is that we can provide you the same, if not a better quality experience than you would find in most capital cities. The upgrade has also given us greater flexibility in programming a greater number of movies and live shows more frequently so that you can enjoy more regular entertainment options.

It has also enabled time for us to connect with you in a more meaningful way by taking our live show performers and activities out to you through community and school workshops and outdoor presentations. Here at the Matt Dann we aspire to ensure something is left in our community after the show has left town, inspiring and creating a new generation of theatre lovers just like you. To help facilitate this during 2013 young people from the JDYz, Youth Involvement Council (YIC), Wirraka Maya and local schools had the opportunity to learn direct from the touring performers, including stunts and acrobatics from two particular shows, Freefall and 360 All Stars as part of our audience engagement program. Managing Carmen attracted the highest audience attendance than any other regional venue. This then led to an offer from the Black Swan State Theatre Company to hold theater workshops at the Matt Dann, which inspired the formation of the Matt Dann Play Reading group. Our promise to you is that the 2014 Season Program will bring even more enjoyment and smiles to your face, as you laugh, cry, be amazed and uplifted. The Matt Dann Team

Managing Carmen

By Black Swan Theatre Company Brent Lyall has it all. At 23 years old he has a beautiful girlfriend, two Brownlow medals, and he’s already the captain of one of the most powerful football clubs in the land. There’s just one small hitch. Occasionally he enjoys dressing up in women’s clothes. Uncovering his client’s penchant for cross dressing, Brent’s wily agent Rohan Swift swings into damage control to prevent the devastating truth from coming out. The media already has a whiff of the story and the humiliation of a public outing would spell the end of the athlete’s career, not to mention the mountains of cash they’re both making through endorsements. Managing Carmen is David Williamson’s latest laugh-out-loud instalment, holding a mirror up to the personalities we’ve all come to love and hate - the whatever-it-takes businessman, the bimbo trophy wife, and of course, the flawed footy hero. Duration 1 hour 50 minutes (including interval) Audience Recommended 16 years and above. Contains coarse language and adult themes. Saturday 16 August 2014 > 5pm

Swamp Juice By Bunk Puppets

Swamp Juice is the second production from acclaimed Canadian-born performer, Jeff Achtem. Using bits of rubbish and household items, Jeff creates stories in shadow puppetry. All of the puppetry is performed in front of the screen, so the audience gets a peek at how each silhouette is made. Swamp Juice is a simple story, told with no dialogue or text. A man explores a swamp, interacting with the characters that he finds: a pair of bickering snails, a mouse teasing a snake and bird feeding its chick. A chase begins, and the man and the bird tear about the theatre, leaping off the stage and into the venue. Then, in a gripping DIY finale, each member of the audience is handed a pair of 3D glasses and the chase moves into 3D shadow puppetry. The audience jumps as jellyfish hang over their heads, and swamp monsters leap out from the shadow puppet screen. Totally unforgettable! Duration 55 minutes {no interval} Audience Recommended for 7 years old and above. May frighten very young children. Tickets $44/Adult $34/Concession $32/Matt’s Mates $24/Under 18 years old

Still Awake Still! By Jump Leads & Jessica Wilson

Still Awake Still! is a funny, anarchic, musical theatre work with irresistible child-appeal and a sophistication that delights adults and children alike. Part-concert, part-theatre, the entire show emerges like magic from beneath the lid of a grand piano. Miss Ivory Tinklefinger, Queen of Sleep, is hired to sing the audience to sleep, but tonight her piano has a mind of its own. Her lullabies come alive – and the consequences are wild! Not only does she fail to put a single child to sleep, she also conjures two mischievous musical boys from the heart of the piano. What’s happening? Who is in control here? And can she resist the temptation to join in? Inspired by parents’ daily challenge of putting their little ones to bed, Still Awake Still! explores the tussle between order and chaos, rest and play, reason and intuition, in a drama that celebrates the process of creativity. Duration 50 minutes (no interval) Audience Recommended for children aged 4 to 10 years and their families. Tickets $44/Adult $34/Concession $32/Matt’s Mates $14/Under 18 years old

But wait there is more... Keep an eye out for the following shows! In addition to our 2014 Theatre Season, we are planning to bring a range of other performances and events to our venue. Once they are confirmed, we will promote the details through our normal marketing channels. 32

Dust of Uruzgan By Fred Smith

In 2011, songwriter and diplomat Fred Smith returned from 18 months in Uruzgan Province, southern Afghanistan with a collection of songs he released as the album Dust of Uruzgan. The album won rave reviews and coverage on national radio, television and print. The show combines songs, humour, and commentary with a stunning set of projected photographs by military and civilian photographers. Smith was actually there and the stories he tells are of real people and events.

The Sunny Cowgirls From sheep shearing through to the outback sun, they proudly sing about their lives, part country music celebrities and when the hats are put away, part tractor drivers, dog trainers and rouseabouts… you possibly won’t find a country act that lives the life more-so than The Sunny Cowgirls, they write what they live, and make no apologies for it. Sisters, The Sunny Cowgirls continue to demonstrate through music their zest for fun, they don’t shy away from having a good time, penning hit songs about the experiences they have lived.

Enhance Your Experience Theatre for everyone At the Matt Dann Cultural Centre, our mission is to harness the power of the performing arts to enrich our community. We aim to bring the theatre experience out of the Matt Dann space so that people of all ages from all sectors of our community can have access to some of the most talented national and international artists.

34

Audience engagement Meaningful engagement with our audience happens both inside and outside the theatre. Ways we did this during 2013 included hosting workshops that were facilitated by performers in some of our live shows such as Gene Peterson and the crew from 360 All Stars. This dynamic cast of talented performers held a range of workshops including basketball freestyling, breakdancing, BMX, circus and drumming workshops were held at the JD Hardie Youth Zone and were all well attended. These workshops motivated the kids participating to influence their parents to bring them along. Great outcomes for everyone with the kids going in confidence and the families gaining a live show performance that was high energy, entertaining and high quality. Other audience engagement activities around shows included Scent Tales, where budding young bakers participated in cup cake making & decorating workshop at the Well Women’s Centre and some of you may have been curious about the giant cupcake in the South Hedland Town Centre, we were unable to contain it within our walls and what a quirky way to get people involved! The following page outlines some of the audience engagement plans we have for 2014.

35

2014 Audience Engagement Education program Our focus by bringing the theatre experience out to the community has had a focus on youth. We believe in giving young people the opportunity to experience exceptional theatre, and we hope this will inspire a passion that will last a lifetime. In 2014, we will bring dedicate performances and workshops designed to allow children and young people to explore their creative side. Our program is developed to support teachers and youth agencies by creating unique opportunities to enhance young people’s learning and provide an access point into the world of performing arts. Schools and youth agencies taking part in our program will have access to educational resources.

Workshops Throughout 2014, a range of free workshops for the community including many for young people will take place at the Matt Dann Cultural Centre and around town. More details will be available closer to the events and will be promoted through our regular marketing channels.

Lost or stolen tickets

We are able to replace lost or stolen tickets to assigned seat events provided you gave us your name and address at the time of purchase. Lost or stolen tickets to assigned seat events are reissued by the Box Office on the day of the event and you must present photo identification to collect the reprinted ticket. Unfortunately, we are unable to replace tickets to general admission events such as regular movies and advise that you keep them in a safe place until they are required to avoid disappointment.

Warnings We do not intend to offend our audiences; however some productions contain coarse language, mature themes, smoke effects and material that can offend. Full information can be found on the show pages.

Accessible seating We welcome guests with disability into our venue. To ensure the best service and to facilitate your access to the theatre, please let us know when making your reservation.

Cancellations In the event that a movie screening or a live show is cancelled, the Matt Dann Cultural Centre will aim to reschedule the event to the first appropriate available time. If a patron has already purchased tickets to the cancelled event, then their tickets will be valid for the rescheduled event. If a patron cannot attend the rescheduled event, or if the Matt Dann Cultural Centre cannot offer a rescheduled event, then patrons will be reimbursed for their purchase or provided with complimentary tickets to cover the costs of the tickets.

Start time and latecomers Doors and kiosk open one hour prior to the events The Matt Dann Cultural Centre makes every effort to begin live performances at the published start time. Please note carefully the

start time of the shows as allocated seats will not be guaranteed after the start of the performance. Latecomers will be asked to wait in the foyer and will only be accepted into the theatre at a suitable break in the program. The late seating break is determined by the artists and is designed to cause as little disruption as possible to other patrons and the artists on the stage. For the movies, latecomers will not be admitted into the cinema after the start of the films and no refunds will be made. We recommend that patrons arrive at the Centre at least 20 minutes prior to the performance start time to avoid delaying the performance and inconveniencing other patrons. Photographs, audio and video recordings are prohibited.
