BOOK CLUB The book club offers a great variety of books for all reading tastes which have been selected to prompt lively book discussions. Book Club is open to all ages. The title for April is 'Youth' by J.M.Coetzee. The narrator of Youth, a student in the South Africa of the 1950s has long been plotting an escape from his native country: from the stifling love of his mother, from a father whose failures haunt him, and from what he is sure is impending revolution. Studying mathematics, reading poetry, saving money, he tries to ensure that when he arrives in the real world, wherever that may be, he will be prepared to experience life to its full intensity, and transform it into art. Arriving at last in London, however, he finds neither poetry nor romance. Instead he succumbs to the monotony of life as a computer programmer, from which random, loveless affairs offer no relief. Devoid of inspiration, he stops writing. An awkward colonial, a constitutional outsider, he begins a dark pilgrimage in which he is continually tested and continually found wanting. HARM REDUCTION THERAPEUTIC ACTIVITIES As a way of reducing harm Bloodwood Tree Association has come up with practical strategies intended to reduce the negative consequences of high risk behaviours such as over drinking alcohol or drug use. This is a non-judgemental approach and Bloodwood Tree Association’s counsellors are attempting to meet people where they are at with their drinking and drug use. Instead of total abstinence the counsellors support the individuals to minimise the harms caused by drug and alcohol abuse by providing a variety of activities like cooking, artwork, music and dance, watching DVD, storytelling, gardening and sometimes just yarning in a friendly environment and each activity is concluded by a healthy meal. Sessions are held every Wednesday morning from 8am to 12pm at WAPA MAYA Centre, 14 Forrest Circle in South Hedland. For more information about this program please contact Salome Mbenjele on 9138 0300 or email salome.mbenjele@bloodwoodtree.org.au
