woodboard house. apartment rennovation lissone, italy

The apartment is located in a 1960s apartment block in the centre of Lissone, Northern Italy. The extreme attention to detail throughout the apartment renovation, together with a carefully considered material selection, creates an accentuation of the natural light entering from outside to create a tranquil ambiance within. Although the concept behind the original layout of the apartment was to a high standard and worked sufficiently asx a functional living unit, it is difficult for occupants to impose their identity on a design that is created for the masses. In addition, there were many imperfections in the dimensions of the apartment due to carelessness during construction. The objective of the renovation was to create an apartment that was more suited to the needs of its occupants, creating a canvas from which they may develop as a family. The redesign of the apartment interior revolved around two intertwining central themes: the influx of natural light, and the freedom of movement. For this purpose, the entire floor plan was redesigned to remove the conventional barriers between each of the rooms, whilst still maintaining their individual functions, to create an open and simplified living space full of conviviality. As a consequence of the renovation, it was also possible to correct the imprecisions that were plaguing the apartment.

Focusing on both light and freedom of movement throughout the redesign, as well as the interactions therein, a number of the interior walls were removed and replaced with a diagonal walkway that keeps both the concept of fluidity constant, whilst creating a meta-physical barrier between the rooms. The diagonal cross-section was built around the structural framework of the apartment, including a number of supporting pillars running vertically through the entire building, to give a sense of order and coherence within. This order and structural conformity is emphasised by the manner in which the walls have been carved into to create bookshelves, counters and cupboards, and relieve the flat from additional clutter. The floor-to-ceiling double doors also belong to this system, and when opened become part of the wall itself, again giving freedom to both movement and light. The materials used throughout the renovation were selected to form a symbiosis of comfort, solidity, agelessness and modernity, whilst maintaining both functionality and personality. This is highlighted in particular by the duality of the handcrafted pieces of furniture and vintage ornaments dotted around the apartment, together with the concrete elements used within the kitchen. The concrete itself, whilst simultaneously both reflecting and enhancing the natural light entering though the balcony doors, confers a solidity, but also emanates an almost natural expression through its imperfect, porous appearance.

fischerei zentrum bodensee

towering tall and uncompromising above the danube in regensburg, the building is a landmark of bavarian culture. rather than merely housing relevant pieces of various cultural and historical merit, the design itself becomes intertwined into the history of bavaria. the structural design of the interior of the building creates a unique pattern within; specifically, the individual butterfly-shaped pillars allow an intricate separation of various displays whilst simultaneously maintaining a semiinteractive open space. the various displays around the museum are divided into a number of different routes that meet together in the centre of a towering open area. additionally, natural light cascades down from the top of the pillars through periodic gaps in the floor, filling the building with unique light patterns. with specific reference to the history of regensburg itself, the museum is envisioned as a cathedral of the new era..

the library, a somewhat tyrannical design, stands in the tempelhof district of berlin as a dark imperial machine of culture. the central cores of the library distribute this sense of power vertically throughout the building; this is most notable towards the higher levels, in which the books are stored, and where the natural light is altered into distinctive and unique directions and patterns. the cores, which have been designed in order to maximise space with remarkable efficiency, are the sole divisions within the design; this results in minimal light obstruction from the outside of the faรงade, whilst also maintaining the panoramic view from within. inside the design, the projection of the surrounding environment onto the triangular-shaped space leads to the perception of a natural square design, highlighting the significance of the relationship of the building with its setting. along the edges of the faรงade, a second circulation works its way upward, giving certain independence to each sector and allowing movement in a calm and scenic fashion.

from a thin strip of desolated land embedded in concrete, a reminder of former times, a new sense of life is created from the ruins. from barren lands that still bare the empty remains of a failed industrial past, a new structure is reborn to absorb the new future to come. a structure that, by embracing the past, demonstrates it is not fearful of the fickle nature of changing trends. a structure that wants to sew back together the land, the land that is so starkly torn apart by both the river and rail line, which in turn provide the landscape with a unique frame. once separated, there is a sense that the two are destined never to meet again, lending us the impression that the surrounding land is split apart indefinitely. the landscape is transformed in a definition of the structure, which acts as a frame immortalising a sequence of portraits of its paths woven by the river and rail line; it is in this way in possession of a strong defence against outside disturbances. the now picturesque environment of the patch of land is a refusal and a refuge to any future urban sprawl, and therefore it is possible to imagine a sense of beauty eternal.

the security of the structure lies in the solidity to its introverted landscape, whilst the uniform repetition brings a sense of order without becoming overly powerful on a human scale. the exasperated rhythm of the walls has a calming effect on the landscape, particularly when coupled with the nearby flowing river. the sense of security is echoed in the service spaces housed within the frame of the structure, which themselves become containers of the basic necessities and amenities of daily life. the main components of the human living spaces become secondary; those that are found to exist within the structure seem to almost be bought to life in ceaseless transformations with time and seasons, and with changing needs and trends. in a society of momentary and forgetful existence, the structure has no sense of time, the strong interaction between the walls and the framed landscape seeks to bring comfort through its solidarity, solidity and strength, guiding social growth through longevity.

WISSENSCHAFT PAVILION berlin

derived from the ancient art of origami. the beauty of the design is found in the ability of the singular, fragile squares to coalesce to form a solid shell; the end result is a shelter for passers-by. As sunlight penetrates the individual components of the design in a unique and ever-changing fashion, the structure teems with life, almost as if alive.

inspired by the airport hangars, in relation of proportions and massivity; the library becomes a linear shell of the complexity of the program inside. a complex three-dimensional structure, generated by the angles of the outside shell, defines the inner spaces into fractals of diffent scales. when the structure meets the facade, it transforms it in a semitrasparent decorative crochet of glass and photovoltaic elements. the core of the building are the enourmous storage spaces. like a solid stone they hang in the center of a feeble-thin structure, where the library climbs on top of it. unique spaces are generated where the two elements meet.

giessen areal housing d端bendorf

the housing block seeks for identity, in a place where the human scale seems to be somehow forgotten. from the austerity of the 120 meters street facade, the building curves itself in three sinuous and elegant inner-courtyards, looking for a new urban motif. it always stays solid, in one piece, generating a complexity that is the mirror of our everyday social life.

within the large masterplan of a former industries area, the project looks for a new living-quarter dimensions. narrowness density and hidden tiny courtyards shape a new pattern of modern housing. swoping maisonette apartments, large one-floor families apartments with terraces and tower-apartments create a great variety of situations to give life to the new village-block.
