passage introduction
A designer’s adventure is never done. There is always something new waiting to be learned, as every artistic creation is a voyage into the unknown. Every great work starts from a small journey. For me, every project not only leads me into unfamiliar territory, but allows me to re-envision my own familiar surroundings from a new perspective, an another way of seeing the landscape of Graphic Design. I invite you to take this passage with me and find out how I made my way through each project, despite all the obstacles. Each of the final work came from some starting place, passed by check points, and finally arrived at a destination: this book. Each completed piece of work is a milestone, an indication of how far I’ve come.

a new face for vanity fair opportunity
strategy
In today’s marketplace it is relatively easy to find brands that are either dead or don’t have the same impact that they once had. The mission was to identify a brand that no longer speaks to the modern audience and re-imagine it through a new visual identity system with a comprehensive brand experience. I was given the challenge of pushing the brand beyond anything imaginable, as long as it fit the original spirit of the brand.
Vanity Fair was once a popular lingerie company. It stood for beauty and gave a woman confidence through helping her become a object of desire. The women of today are not defined by their sexual appeal but through their accomplishments. Vanity Fair will now be rebranded into VFair, inspiring women to break out of barriers defined by traditional views in order to enhance the outer and inner life of women, for their body, mind and soul.

a solution for the future opportunity
strategy
As a group we chose a single topic to inspire the creation of a series of three books on different aspects of the subject. The content, voice, and design looked and felt cohesive and the books were able to stand on their own. We were pushed by the instructor to expand on a series of principles of design while also incorporating more advanced concepts such as hierarchy, organization, and grid system, as well as the skills of team work.
Our series explored the effects of education on quality of life, “How education affects income”, “How education affects crime and violence” and “How education affects health”. As a group we chose to signature bind our book to look like traditional composition notebooks. We also created a case for the books: a binder wrapped with brown paper bag, just like we were taught in high school.

a healthier generation opportunity
strategy
Society is facing a lot of different social issues, and organizations and movements are being created every day to address them. But, are they successful? The objective was to choose a specific company, organization, or movement that needs help marketing its services in a more appealing way. We were asked to make a thorough assessment of the organization and its market, and begin a process of branding it and giving it a new voice based on the core messages that it communicates. Design solutions needed to be developed in a way that utilized sustainable practice and minimized waste.
Childhood nutrition has become a vital topic lately because of the increasingly number of obese children. But nutrition has a lot of other implications than health. What a kid eats also determines how well her mind functions. That’s why I focused on the company “Brain Fuel”. Their website provides much needed information about this issue. After several weeks of research I gave the company an extreme makeover, making all their content look more kid friendly and simple to digest.

a better world for us opportunity
strategy
To gain a comprehensive understanding of a social issue and create an insightful narrative that can resonate, educate and inspire people it is necessary to go through deep research, analysis, and visual exploration. The mission for this project was to explore how a problem affects society, education, politics, and the environment. I learned that, as a graphic designer, it is very important to know how to synthesize information and communicate visually with the supporting message.
The choice came from a personal experience. I had just been to Brazil, when a bad flood struck several towns there. Hundreds died and thousands had lost their homes. The country felt for them and people formed groups to receive donations and to help reconstruct the destroyed communities. My family drove around to collect donations and assisted with their distribution. We helped so many people and made us feel great. I decided them to work on helping motivate people to volunteer more.

a cinematographic fair opportunity
s t r at e g y
Film directors have the ability to translate words in a script into pictures on a screen. Some produce the most influential films that can touch the bottom of our heart. To create a film festival experience is a great opportunity to get into the mind set of a director and understand the concepts that run through a body of work. The mission was to select a director and films that best represented the director’s visions and to act as a full-service agency, planning an event (location and programming) and designing a complete visual communications campaign, including brand identity, posters, catalog, consumer products and all the relevant ephemera.
For this project I chose Claire Denis, a successful French filmmaker, yet unknown to most of Americans. Denis was born in Paris and raised in colonial Africa. Her experience as a stranger resonate throughout her body of work. She raises major questions about immigration, dislocation, and violence. Every deliverable designed for the festival was tied to the idea of “it’s a futile struggle for an outsider to try to fit in, because of walls people build around themselves and their communities.” The theme not only informed my design decisions but the type of festival I imagined as well.

an immersion into dance opportunity
strategy
Posters are wonderful tools to promote dance festivals because they utilize scale for visual impact. The mission was to design a poster and a fold-out brochure for a festival by a dance company of our choosing. The event had to incorporate multiple performances based on a specific theme, and the brochure should contain background information and include an order form. The solution had to be executed principally through typographic in order to express the theme.
The nature of this project drove me to look for a company that was bold and contemporary. I chose the Deborah Colker Company, a Brazilian troupe noted for athletic, highly photogenic staging on fancy equipment. Their productions typically feature extravagant installations and tackle abstract themes with a scattershot earnestness. I created a poster that fuses words and images into a single impression, thinking of type as an image and using letter forms to express the concept.

a guide for better cooking opportunity
strategy
The home cooking experience is now undergoing dramatic changes in part because cooks are sharing their kitchens through the Internet. Instead of reaching for a cookbook, people are looking at their computer screens to find recipes based on their personal tastes and preferences. With the abundance of culinary content, it is important for a website to distinguish itself by attracting particular consumers. The mission was to design a recipe website with a specific theme and the final design should be presented fully coded in HTML5.
Vegan eating has become so prevalent that it can no longer be ignored. Specialized vegan products have expanded from natural foods stores to mainstream grocers, discount chains, and club stores. To create a website catered specifically to the vegan I used simple and colorful visual information, clean photography, and easy-to-follow instructions. The objective is to showcase how the vegan diet can be delicious, effortless and even fun. The goal is to change the perception of this diet and attract more people to veganism.

a musical interpretation opportunity
strategy
New designers have the tendency to start their design process on the computer, which often limits their creativity. The objective was to explore various ways of looking at type through the use of analog methods without the help of a software, and create an experimental typographic poster that expressed visually the tone and emotional resonance of a chosen song. Ultimately, we were asked to develop the rationale for interpreting a piece of music through typography, imagery and layout, with the consideration that colors and composition are vital to capture the true essence of a song.
I chose the music “Unwritten” by the singer Natasha Bedingfield because it’s one of my favorites. Every time I listen to it I feel very hopeful and empowered. The process to create the poster involved a combination of type and images printed on acetate sheets and swatches of colored cellophane that were then project on to a wall through an old overhead projector. I manually twisted and turned the materials and photographed them in different angles to create unique compositions. The photos ultimately made up the body of the poster.

a safer place for wildlife opportunity
strategy
A graphic design thesis is a final project that is meant to showcase all of the skills that were cultivated over the course of a design program. A thesis project identifies a problem and a single objective. Through comprehensive research, design thinking, and problem solving the thesis delivers solutions that address a problem in a visually compelling manner. The project demonstrates a full range of the graduate student’s design skills, thinking and analysis, as well as the ability to visually communicate a complex topic.
I chose the topic of the exotic pet market and illegal wildlife trafficking because it connects to my passion to Brazilian nature. I did extensive interviews to find out where the gap was in educating Americans on this issue. While researching this, I conducted data collecting and field work. I discovered the market is saturated with an attempts to reach different adult audiences, but people were neglecting our future generations. My thesis aims to reach this children before they become adults and start making wrong decisions.
