The Rules of Attraction 25th Anniversary
I chose to promote the Bret Easton Ellis novel ahead of its 25th anniversary next year as I wanted to create some interesting typographical posters with the intention of extending those designs into an appropriate conceptual range. I chose 10 quotes from the book which gave me enough material to explore visually as a starting point. The focus of this brief was for me to get the message of the novel across as it was intended and not to glamourise it because of the sexual content. To show the characters as the terrible people they are, humorously with type.

I was inspired by the sex issue of Wallpaper* magazine, in which they encouraged designers to find the tart in type by creating cards that visually exploited the potential of type as image.

As I was pleased with the results of my typographic posters I wanted to extend these designs onto other appropriate media that would strengthen my concept. There’s a theme of disposability within the novel, relative to both the characters and the life they lead; and as fast food is also a prominent feature I decided that alongside my typographic posters that I would create my own fast food packaging using the designs on the posters. These were transferable onto media relative to the novel such as bookmarks.

I made a decision and found a way of having the posters within the fast food packaging, as I wanted the result to resemble a meal. The fold that I chose for the posters was intentional as it is supposed to represent a drug wrap due to the large consumption of drugs within the novel.

The completed range consists of the binding for the book, the fast food packaging, a bookmark and a poster all packaged within a brown paper bag to resemble a meal. There are variations on the design of the contents of the meal as there are 10 typographic designs in total that are transferable onto the packaging and book binding.

The special edition package would be available for free when you buy the 25th anniversary version of the book as a promotion and so would be advertised within all major book retailers.
