CIA agents in deep cover are blabbermouths compared to the members of the Christ Church Search Committee. All I know is that the Committee is working, and that they have begun to interview potential candidates for my job. My constant refrain is, “Get a move on.” That’s not because I’m unhappy. Far from it. I feel privileged to be a part of this parish family. But I do have a strong sense that as a parish, we need to begin writing the next chapter in our corporate history as soon as possible. We can tread water for just so long. We need to move ahead. My prayer is that we can anticipate the calling of a new rector with expectancy and joy, trusting that God has something wonderful in store for us. It will be different, of course, but a good kind of different. In this regard, I find myself harboring a number of hopes and ideas.

1.) First of all, I hope that all of us will soak the arrival of the new priest in prayer. Whenever this occurs, we want this person and his family to have a “soft landing.” Christ Episcopal Church 510 Belknap Place San Antonio, TX 78212
2.) I hope we will all wear our name tags. 3.) A great Bill Frey idea that came Bishop Interim Rector from another plusbill@aol.com parish and I hope we can copy it: each family or individual wrote a one page letter of introduction (Who am I? Where do I fit into Christ Church? etc.) They made an album of these and presented them to the priest. 4.) I hope that we will welcome his gifts, and won’t expect him to be omnicompetent and/or a miracle worker. 5.) And that we will welcome the new family into the whole of our lives, not just the Sunday part. Again let me say what a joy and privilege it is to serve you. Barbara and I are grateful for the opportunity. + Bill Frey

During Director of lunch we will Children’s Ministry brainstorm halletah@ and select fun cecsa.org fellowship events our upper elementary students can experience during the year. These fellowship events are designed to build friendships outside of Sunday School time which will bond the children as they prepare for adolescence and the Youth Ministry. Contact Halleta Heinrich at the church for more information. RSVP to Halleta no later than Friday noon, October 7 at halletah@cecsa.org if your child plans to attend. Friends are always welcome! Let’s Get Ready For “Bethlehem Trail” A Texas Style Children’s Christmas Pageant Song Practice Begins Sunday, October 9 in Children’s Chapel continued on p. 4..
Children’s Ministry continued... Big and Little Tex invite all Christ Church kids to be part of “Bethlehem Trail” this years Children’s Christmas Pageant. Big Tex and Little Tex will narrate this Texas-style celebration of the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. The pageant will be presented Sunday, December 4 during the 10:15 AM church service. We will begin practicing our pageant songs in Children’s Chapel on Sunday, October 9, so make sure children are present each Sunday possible so they will be ready to help present the Christmas story as their Advent gift to our Parish Family on December 4. Our Fifth Graders will star as the main Nativity Characters. Preschool 3 year olds through Kindergarteners will be Little Longhorns, Sheep, Cow Dogs, Ponies, and Ranch Cats who come to worship the Christ Child. First and Second Grade girls will be Cowgirl Angels and First and Second Grade Boys will be Cowboy Stars. Third graders will be Cowboys and Cowgirls. Fourth Graders will be Wranglers who keep the peace among all the visiting animals at the manger. Each
age group will have a special song to help in the telling of the story of the first Christmas from the Gospel of Luke. The whole Parish Family is invited to a Texas Style Barbecue Reception following the pageant. We hope Ya’ll Will Come! Children’s All Saints Celebration Sunday, October 30 During Children’s Chapel at 10:15 AM We will celebrate all the saints in heaven and on earth Sunday, October 30 in Children’s Chapel. On this day before Halloween, we will discover the true Christian meaning of Halloween or “Evening of the Holy Ones”, God’s Saints. Our Happy and Sad Jack-OLanterns will be here to help tell the story of life with Christ as compared
to life without Him. We will learn that all who believe in Jesus and accept Him as Lord are saints of God. Children are encouraged to wear bright, happy, positive costumes in honor of the celebration of the true Christian meaning of Halloween - the Celebration of Saints. All Saints treats will be served in the Tomlin Room of the FMC at the conclusion of our celebration. SAMM Shelter Christmas Gift Project Begins in November Each Sunday School class from nursery through children, and youth through adults will be sponsoring families from the SAMM Shelter in our annual SAMM Shelter Christmas Gift Project. These courageous families are transitioning from homelessness to independent living and have very little disposable income with which to purchase Christmas gifts. Each year the sincere appreciation expressed by each of these families is overwhelming. Ask anyone who
has come to the Christmas Party at Christ Church where these gifts are presented. It has been the highlight of many of our holidays and made our Christmas truly meaningful. Information on these families and a proposed Christmas Gift “Wish List” will be posted in each Sunday School class location. Each class is asked to pray for their sponsored families as the holiday season approaches and sign up to bring a Christmas gift for a member of their sponsored family. It is our hope that the gift you purchase for these families be the most important one of the season. If you have children, please involve them in the purchasing of this special gift. They will learn firsthand that it is more blessed to give than to receive. “Hanging of the Greens” Parish Potluck Coming Sunday, November 27 (First Sunday of Advent) 11:30 AM in the Parish Hall On Sunday November 27, the first Sunday of Advent, it
will be time to “deck the halls” – Parish Hall, that is. Our Parish Hall will be the setting for many holiday events, so it needs our loving touch. A Potluck Lunch will be served with the church providing the main dish of ham and drinks and the Parish Family providing the sides. (See your potluck assignment below.) We will hang greenery and decorate the Parish Chrismon tree and a children’s tree as Christmas carols play to get us into the holiday spirit. *Please bring a Pot Luck offering to the church kitchen ready to serve at cold or room temperature before 10:15 AM service: Last Name Beginning With A – C Breads and Rolls D – M Desserts N – Z Sides and Salads

“New Beginnings” DNow Weekend Watching an inspirational Friday night movie while indulging in wonderful snacks, popcorn, and tropical sorbets, giggling (and sometimes screaming!) while experiencing the midair thrills of Fiesta Texas, singing praises with an awesome youth band from Lubbock, listening to an inspirational Young Life leader from Houston, spending the night with church friends at host homes, and sharing scriptures and prayer needs with peers under the guidance of caring small group leaders - these were the ingredients of our first ever Disciple Now (DNow) weekend for the Youth of Christ Episcopal Church. Held the weekend of August 12th – 14th, DNow kicked off the “New Beginnings” of our Youth Ministry year for 6th – 12th grade students, and was designed to start the year with fun, good fellowship, scriptural guidance, and a charge for discipleship in our students’ daily routines. Twenty-five of our Christ Church youth spent Friday,
Saturday, and Sunday with their “Brothers and Sisters in Christ” (B.A.S.I.C.), leaving tired, but spiritually strengthened for the year ahead. Our youth gathered at the Christ Church Parish Hall early Friday evening - sleeping bags, suitcases and bibles in hand - undoubtedly wondering what this DNow weekend would bring, but energized for an adventure-filled few days with friends and trusted church Youth leaders. After Clark Niles, our Youth Ministry Consultant, provided a brief welcome, “Chad and the Will Wheel” from Lubbock filled the Parish Hall with spiritual music, as our students locked arms and added their voices in song. Soon, Doug Tigtig, an inspirational Young Life Leader from Houston (coincidentally, a former student of Scott Kitayama) presented a reading from John 4:1-26, interspersed with personal experiences and insights. Next, the Parish Hall was transformed into a theater, as the group en-

joyed wonderful snacks and watched Soul Surfer, the “incredible true story of (a) teen surfer who lost her arm in a shark attack and courageously overcame all odds to become a champion again through her sheer determination and unwavering faith.” Adults and students alike were moved by this inspirational story of a young girl’s courage and steadfast beliefs. As Friday evening’s activities came to an end, the students were divided into their small groups by gender and age range, and they departed for their host homes. These host homes, as well as the small group leaders who led sessions each evening and morning, were the backbone of the DNow weekend. In the small groups, students read a scripture, discussed its meaning to them, and shared prayer needs or concerns. Many thanks go to those who
volunteered their homes and their time to serve in these important roles. After a night of late-hours fellowship and sleeping bags, the students started Saturday morning at their host homes with breakfast, conducted their second small group gathering, and departed for a fun day at
Fiesta Texas. Touring Fiesta Texas for the bulk of the day, the students experienced the thrills of their favorite rides, which thankfully included the chance to cool off on this hot August day in the Fiesta Texas Water Park. The entire DNow group, including the band members, chaperones, and small group leaders, gathered to eat lunch, toured a bit more, and returned to their host homes for a welcome rest and the chance to clean up prior to the evening’s activities. Returning to the church for a Saturday night spaghetti dinner, the students gathered in the Carriage House for
music, another inspirational presentation by Doug Tigtig, and a jam session with the band. Small group discussions followed back at the host homes before a welcome night’s rest after a full day of activity. Sunday began early with a final small group devotional and farewell from the host
homes. Then, it was back to Christ Church for tacos, fruit, and sweet rolls, and a Closing Celebration in the Carriage House. With families in attendance, “Chad and the Will Wheel”, Doug Tigtig, and Clark Niles led the DNow students in a final DNow worship service. Students, parents, and siblings shared in heartfelt singing of praise songs, with students again swaying arm-in-arm, filled with the warmth of the weekend’s events. Following recognition in the Sunday Christ Episcopal Church ser-
vice, students rejoined their families, buoyed by DNow insights and fellowship for the “New Beginnings” of their school year. As we head into fall, all students in grades 6 through 12 are encouraged to “Come See What’s Happening in The Carriage House”. Join your B.A.S.I.C. friends for: • Sunday mornings, with music, fellowship, and worship beginning at 9:15 AM • Wednesday evenings from 6:30 - 8:00 PM (dinner at 6:00) for music, fellowship, and worship. Starting September 14th, we will look at “The Blessing”, as will other areas of the church. by Nancy Wright DNow was a great kick-off for us. Thanks to all who helped. If you were at the Rally Sunday you probably gave us your current contact information, if not please drop in on Sunday 9:15 hour for music, fellowship and teaching, and fill out a release and contact form. What is the release for, you might ask. The youth calendar this fall has some outings on the first Wednesday of each continued on p. 9..

Fall Sunday School Dietrich Bonhoeffer left the dangers of Nazi Germany in 1939 to come to New York City at the urgings of friends and colleagues. After arriving he soon realized he had made a mistake. A couple of dozen or so days later he returned to his homeland, regardless of the consequence, realizing that he had to be with the Confessing Church and to try to free Germany of the fascist blight. While in New York he heard many sermons, most of which fell far short of a true explication of the Bible text. In his diary entries he reflected on these sermons. One particular disappointment was chronicled on Sunday the 2nd of July, 1939, commenting on a radio sermon delivered by the Rev. Gorkmann of Park Avenue Church. Bonhoeffer said of it: No text, no echo of the Christian proclamation. Rather a disappointment….The Americans speak so much about freedom in their sermons. Freedom as a possession is a doubtful thing for a church; freedom must be under compulsion of a necessity. Freedom for the church comes from the necessity of the Word of God. Otherwise it becomes arbitrariness and
ends in a great many new ties. Whether the church in America is really “free,” I doubt. They are lonely Sundays over here. Only the Word makes a true community. (Metaxas, Eric. Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy, pp. 342-343) He heard another sermon by American philosopher William James at Rockefeller’s Riverside Church and wrote that it was “quite unbearable.” He went on to say that, the whole thing was a respectable, self-indulgent, self-satisfied religious celebration. This sort of idolatrous religion stirs up the flesh which is accustomed to being kept in check by the word of God. Such sermons make for libertinism, egotism, indifference. Do people not know that one can get on as well, even better, without “religion?” (Metaxas, p. 333) These incisive comments give us today, 72 years later, fare warning of the importance of God’s Word in relationship to our surrounding culture. Either we are shaped by the Word of God or by the culture. A key sentence is that “only the Word makes a true community.” Another is that true “freedom” comes from God’s Word. At Christ Church one of our Core Values is that we are
Bible-based: “we receive the Bible as God’s inspired Word and our ultimate authority.” In our pulpit there is John Barrett Asst. Rector a small plaque johnb@cecsa.org that says, “Sir, we would see Jesus,” a passage from John 12 when Greeks came wishing to see Jesus. It reminds the preacher of preaching in a way that is Christ-centered and brings the congregation into the presence of the Living God. And it hinges into the necessity of getting into the Word of God and understanding its life-changing authority over the church. As we rally ourselves this fall into another season of walking the journey of faith, I encourage us all to grow in our understanding of the Bible and its amazing grace-filled authority over our lives. I want to exhort us to see that the Bible, both in preaching and in studying which draws, us into deeper Communion with the Lord and each other. And I would like to remind us to discern the “freedom” that the world offers versus the “Freedom” that Jesus offers. One way to do this is to not continued on p. 11..

only come to worship, but to hear a Christ-centered, Bible based sermon that influence you in a deep way. (If we preachers do not live up to that standard, please set us straight!) Another way is to come to Sunday School. The adults will be studying the Epistle to the Hebrews in two venues, each with its own excellent teacher—Bill Frey in the Parish Hall and Scott Rose in the Conference Room. No doubt, you will come to see the value of the
Bible in your life as the very Word of God, through which He speaks to us in a convicting and transforming way. For the word of God is alive and active.
