the state is not able to provide our certified staff (teachers, librarians, counselors and administration) with any funding for instruction. Our parents and community businesses have been extremely generous with donations to help support the learning of our students. If you are able to assist with a donation or specific classroom need, it would be greatly appreciated and money well spent. Huntsville High School continues to maintain high standards of excellence; we achieved a 97% graduation rate for Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). Huntsville High School is committed to continuous improvement and has developed plans to address the deficits in proficiency rates for our special education and black subgroups in reading and math. The A+ College Ready Initiative experienced its second successful year at HHS. Last spring HHS administered 747 Advanced Placement tests (AP). Of those tests 430 received a qualifying score of 3 or better (statistically above the national average). We anticipate administering nearly 1000 AP tests next spring. Students earning a qualifying score may receive college credit before graduating from high school. If you are interested in more information about the Advanced Placement program for your child, please speak to your counselor for specific details. Parents, thank you for your continued support. Please encourage your students to arrive on time in the morning and come prepared ready to engage in classroom learning. Parental involvement makes the difference in a student’s success. If you or your student need anything throughout the school year, please feel free to contact me. Please know that we are here to assist you and will do what we can to help. I look forward to continued success and improvement for the 2011-2012 year. GO BIG RED!!

From Principal Leslie Esneault

From The President’s Desk

Welcome to the 2011-2012 school year at Huntsville High School. I hope that your students are in a routine and have formed good study habits to help ensure academic success. With more than one month of classes already finished, students have become familiar with the standards and expectations of their teachers. I am proud of our student body, faculty and staff; together they work hard every day to make Huntsville High School the very best! I am hopeful that most of you were able to meet with your students’ teachers at our annual PTSA Open House on August 23, 2011. Thank you to all the parents who attended this evening event. It was a huge success.

Thank you to all of the HHS Family for a wonderful start to the 2011-2012 school year! Welcome to all new and returning students, faculty and friends.

Once again the teachers and staff have been asked to do their jobs without the state allocated resources. During a normal school year, teachers were provided with classroom money for supplies and instructional resources. Because of proration, HHS PTSA NEWSLETTER FALL 2011

As HHS parents, teachers, students, administration and staff, we each have an amazing opportunity to be active in developing our young people as they prepare to lead our city, our nation and our world into the future. Each day, HHS students are preparing to be the leaders of tomorrow and we must equip them appropriately. Not only must they learn specific skills and information, but they must also learn to lead active and balanced lives in order to respond successfully to rapidly changing workplace and environmental demands. Most of them will work in jobs and fields that are either rapidly changing or do not yet exist. All of us are needed to keep our students and Huntsville High School strong. 1

PTSA Your PTSA is our school’s ‘booster club’, uniting all parents, teachers, students, administration and staff to benefit Huntsville High School. As you probably know, this year’s local, state and federal funding is again limited or unavailable, and we face ongoing times of decreasing funding. Because of your generosity, this year we increased our start-up amount given to teachers from $60 to $75. With your help, we hope to be able to grant specific teacher requests and address unmet needs at HHS. Your PTSA also works to improve all students’ access to technology, helps care for our campus grounds, publishes the PTSA newsletter— going digital this year!!, produces the student directory and so much more. Here are a few of the latest PTSA activities: • Registration Day without schedule distribution was still a great success—special thanks to our Administration and Staff and Martha Sharp coordinating with Susanne Bagwell and PTSA volunteers. • Open House (thank you Kari Smith, 1st VP, Programs and our clubs and organizations who participated) provided information from our Principal, Leslie Esneault, entertainment by Show Choirs and Theater Department and then, parents followed student’s full class schedules and met their teachers.

PTSA committees where you want to be involved. Our goal is 100% PTSA membership – we need at least one member representing each student at HHS. This year so far, we have over 1740 students enrolled. To date, we have over 1450 PTSA members, so we need your help if you have not yet joined PTSA. We are fortunate to have an outstanding administration, faculty and staff at HHS and PTSA is proud to support their efforts for our students and our school. I wish each of you a smooth and successful school year. I would love to hear your great ideas for HHS and pass along your desire to volunteer on one of our PTSA committees. Go Big Red! Respectfully and thankfully, Lisa Miller, PTSA President lmillerhsv@comcast.net

Student Council Officers

Reflections

Over the summer, the Student Council officers and members selected at the end of the school year met several times to plan the homecoming activities and other school projects. A delegation will be helping Athens High School at the Southern Association of Student Councils Conference in October. This is the first time this conference has returned to North Alabama since HHS sponsored it in the early 1970s. Attendees will be able to participate in leadership workshops, network with other Student Council members from across the Southeast, and co-host an evening at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center. The conference will provide the members with a chance to build their teamwork skills as they take part in a scavenger hunt through downtown Athens. Those participating expect to bring back valuable knowledge. The following students will serve as 2011- 2012 Student Council members.

Students are invited to interpret “Diversity Means…” through dance choreography, film, literature, musical composition, photography, and visual arts. The HHS deadline is Nov. 2. A $500 scholarship will be awarded to one Alabama senior. Entry forms and rules are available in an orange binder on the HHS guidance counter or download your own at http://www.ptareflections.org/cs/student_entry_form (those are underbars in the web address). Contact Beverly Ellison, 533-3411, for more information. For ideas, take a look at last year’s three HHS winners, whose entries are featured in the attendance hall showcase!

FCCLA is also taking a Fashion Field Trip to NYC to explore fashion as a career, going to the Garment Tenement Museum, FIT, Parson’s School of Design, a Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Exhibit and Mood Fabrics as well as experiencing Sample Sales, a Fashion Showroom (TBA; in years past, we went to Tracy Reese, Tommy Hilfiger and Rafealla) and will be able to shop some on 5th Avenue, Soho and Chinatown.

Every Fall, Huntsville High AFJROTC cadets travel to Bear Creek to enjoy a weekend of adventure and fun, but this year the Corps went on a new adventure. The Corps went to Camp Maranatha in Scottsboro, Alabama on September 24, 2011. Maranatha differs from Bear Creek in that the courses are much more rigorous. The Leadership Reaction Course (LRC) there is, “Scary”, compared to Bear Creek’s, according to Vice Commander Faye Barry. Maranatha might sound intimidating, but it is a weekend of fun and excitement for the entire AL-941 Corps. What is a Drill Team? Drill Team is a precision extracurricular activity in which Cadets march in formation in step, command in front of Commissioned Officers, and show off their skills in armed and unarmed exhibition drill. The Drill Team of Huntsville High is, “The Best Drill Team In Northern Alabama!” as Chief Daniel exclaims. A Drill Competition on October 29, 2011, in Batesville, Mississippi is the team’s next challenge and they intend on, “Bringing home trophies” Drill Team Commander Chelsie Crossen states.

POWDERPUFF FOOTBALL After a slow start with registration and limited field access for practices, 110+ girls signed up to play powderpuff football this year. All of the t-shirts had a big pink ribbon on the back in support of Breast Cancer Month. Weather issues resulted in many rescheduled games but players and coaches stayed enthusiastic. This program allows large participation by the girls and is completely a charity event. The girls have a great time each year. Hope everyone was able to come support the teams

Interact Club The Interact Club of Huntsville High is an extension of the Rotary Club of Huntsville. Our students are involved in numerous service projects. Some of the area events we are involved in include the Special Olympics Track and Field, Special Olympics Bowling and Basketball, Life South and Red Cross Blood Drives, and Fishing Rodeos for area elementary and special needs students. In the last two years, the Interact Club and Psychology classes of Huntsville High have partnered together and sponsored families at Huntsville High who have needed assistance during the holiday season. It is so wonderful to see our students open their hearts and give to someone with greater needs. Like everything else it takes funds to operate an organization that helps so many others. We would like to continue doing all of our projects and maybe adding a few extra. Any help or donations from outside sources would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Tina Jones (Interact Sponsor)

The Fellowship of Christian Athletes The Fellowship of Christian Athletes meets every Wednesday morning at 7:00 in the small gym or lecture hall. We have a great time of fellowship as we share and worship the Lord together. We enjoy testimonies from various community speakers, as well as students and faculty from within Huntsville High School. We share breakfast and have wonderful time together. Please join us, and for more information see Mrs. Doss in room 219.

Health and Safety The Health and Safety Committee this year will strive to bring information to the students and parents through assemblies, classroom discussions and panther postings. For the Freshman class, we had Mrs. Candy Stephenson and Dr. Tim Howard speak to the students regarding risky behavior and the dangers and life altering effects from using drugs and alcohol. We will focus on the Health Classes for the Sophomores, bringing them a variety of topics pertinent to their health and safety. We will focus on Prom Promise and have a speaker for the Junior and Senior class sometime before Spring Break or Prom. Information has been delivered to the parents of our students through the counselors and Panther Postings. We wish all Huntsville High Students and safe and healthy year.

Hunter’s Hotline The question for the freshman class and parents might be “What is Hunter’s Hotline?” Hunter’s Hotline was established at HHS in the fall of 2004. It is named in memory of Hunter Stephenson. The Hotline is a dedicated phone line that is only monitored by our two resource officers at HHS. The caller will hear a prerecorded message and can leave their information. There is no caller ID and it is not necessary for the caller to identify themselves. This is not used for emergencies. The purpose for the Hotline is to give HHS students, their parents and anyone else in the community an anonymous way to report any dangerous or potentially dangerous activity, any illegal activity or anything of concern regarding the safety and well-being of our students. Our resource officers keep every call confidential. They have reported that the Hotline “works” and that it is not only used by our school but also by others who do not have such a tool for their students. Again, please remember that this is not used for emergencies - it is only a recording.

HHS Swim & Dive Team The HHS Swim and Dive Team is off to a great start. There are 55 swimmers and 13 divers that have made the team. The swim team is being led by Coach Paige Brown, assisted by Travis Pinnix. The dive team is being led by Coach Steve Hall, assisted by Donald Overbeek. Greg Taylor and Tina Jones are the new faculty representatives. The team would like to thank Kat Brennan for all her years with us; you will be missed! Booster members include Meg McCarthy as President, Holly Holder as Vice President, Diane Smith as Treasurer, and Sandra Parsons as Secretary. Congratulations to Sean McCarthy, Devon Parsons (swimming) and Ryan Petroff HHS PTSA NEWSLETTER FALL 2011

(diving) who were selected as our 2011 team captains. Also, congratulations to Harrison Hudson, Anna Beth Weakly (swimming) and Ben King (diving) who were selected as the team’s spirit captains. The season kicked off on Thursday September 29th at Alabama A&M where the Panthers competed with Sparkman and Westminster. The remaining schedule can be found on the team’s website at: www.hhspantherswimanddive. com. The high school state meet will be at Auburn University on December 2-3 for state qualifiers. Please come to the Natatorium and support the HHS Swim and Dive Team at the City Championship on Nov 8th and the North Alabama championship on Nov 18th!

The Student Activities Committee The Student Activities Committee welcomes input from students and parents on ideas in helping plan student activities. We have brainstormed and come up with some ideas for activities that encourage student involvement while also having FUN! Employers and College Admissions like to see that students are involved in school. Clubs may be just the right fit for students to become involved. There are lists of Huntsville High School clubs on the HHS website under Extracurricular and Student Council tabs. Parents may need to partner with students to help identify groups to which he or she shares a common interest. Then encourage the student to take the big step of getting involved with the group. When students are not busy with clubs or sports, attending a school event is a great way to show school spirit and support. The students notice when someone comes out to support them. It is fun to watch friends and classmates play in a game and perform in a play. Most of these activities require fundraising efforts. People realize this and are willing to donate in some way. Students need to be a part of the fundraising effort. Community service can be a part of fundraising and shows not only does a student care about the school but also about the neighborhood. Please read Panther Postings! It is the best way to be aware of the happenings at HHS. Parents can see what the various clubs and sports are doing. Fundraising efforts are also promoted. Theatre Department The Theater Department is having one of the most exciting seasons to date. We recently received rave reviews on the children’s musical How I Became a Pirate. Kids of all ages visited- and most were dressed as pirates! We are currently working on The Paper Bag Christmas. Adapted by Mike Chappell from the Kevin Milne novel (a descendant of Winnie The Pooh’s A.A. Milne), the HHS stage production will be the national premiere. Mr. Milne will be flying in from Portland, OR to see the show on Friday, Dec. 2. Over 93 students recently auditioned and 43 have been cast in this touching story. Set in 1980, The Paper Bag Christmas follows the story of two boys who volunteer at a children’s cancer ward during the holidays. Of the many patients they meet, one in particular captures their hearts: a young girl, so disfigured from surgeries that she wears a paper bag to hide her face. “It’s a story of the true meaning of Christmas; how giving is better than receiving” says Mr. Chappell. “I’m honored that Kevin (Milne) asked me to write the adaptation” Tickets will be on sale soon at www.hhspanthertheater.com. Show dates are: Thurs, Dec. 1 and Friday, Dec. 2 @ 7:30 pm.; and Sunday, Dec. 4 @ 2:00 pm. Tickets are $8 for students, senior citizens and military; $10 adults. The Drama Booster Club will be hosting a “dessert and coffee Meet-n-Greet” with the author on Friday, December 2. Tickets to this event are $15 and include dessert and the play. We are proudly donating portions of the proceeds to Huntsville Hospital’s St. Jude’s Clinic. Get ready for a hilarious romp through the world of Alfred Hitchcock as we present The 39 Steps with guest director, John Michael Chappell, HHS class of 2008. John Michael has been seen in such HHS shows as “Kenicke” in Grease; “Gaston” in Beauty and the Beast; and “Thenardier” in Les Miserables. A senior musical theater major, he will cut his directing chops with HHS students on The 39 Steps, The play will be presented Feb. 2, 3 and 4. For the spring musical, we will bring to the stage Rogers and Hammerstein’s timeless classic, Oklahoma! Auditions are open to all HHS students and will be held Monday, January 9 and Tuesday, January 10. beginning at 3:30 pm. Call Backs will be held Thursday, January 12 @ 3:30 pm. There will be a HOW TO AUDITION workshop on Wednesday, November 16 @ 3:30 in the auditorium. This workshop is open to any HHS student interested in audition tips, with special emphasis on auditioning for Oklahoma!

The Paper Bag Christmas is a novel written by Portland, OR author Kevin A. Milne. It is the heartwarming story of Molar and Aaron Alan, two young boys who meet a very different kind of “Santa Claus” at the local mall. It turns out that this ‘Santa” is really Dr. Kristoffer K. Ringle, M.D. – a pediatric oncologist. When he sees what the Alan boys want for Christmas, he tells them that he needs their help at the hospital and, in return, they will “receive a gift far better than anything on their list.” At the hospital the boys dress as elves and meet children/teens battling cancer and other illnesses. Their job? To find out what each child wants for Christmas. In meeting the kids on the ward, they befriend two teens who are especially interesting: Madhu, an Indian boy who doesn’t believe in Christmas and Katrina, a girl so disfigured from her surgeries that she wears a paper bag over her face. Molar, as an adult, serves as the narrator of the tale and takes us back in time to hear his story. In his words: Sadly, only a lucky few will ever encounter the likes of a real Christmas and the lasting joy it brings. Fewer still are lucky enough to know firsthand about the paper bag. I am one of the lucky ones.” I read Kevin’s book last December. I don’t recall anyone giving me the book, nor do I remember ever purchasing it. It was just ‘there”…in my den. As I finished the book that night, I was moved to tears. A former student of mine, Melissa Shuford Thomason, had a little boy – close in age to the kids in the novel- battling stage IV neuroblastoma. I couldn’t help but think of Evan as I considered Kevin’s beautiful story. Throughout the reading of the book, I kept thinking “this would be a great play”. When I finished, I said out loud: “this HAS to be a play!” I went to my laptop and looked up Kevin Milne’s website. I emailed him to let him know how much the book had touched me. And then, on a whim, I mentioned that I thought it should be adapted into a play. I told him that I was a high school drama teacher and invited him to visit our theater website to see the work I’d done….and then I typed “I’d love to help with this if you ever decided to look into it. Think of the fundraising opportunities that could be available if other groups had access to the script.” I received an email from Kevin the next day: Hi Mike, thanks for your note! I’m so glad you enjoyed The Paper Bag Christmas. I’ve had others also suggest that it should be turned into a holiday play, or even a musical, but I haven’t found the right person to make that a reality. And unfortunately, I wouldn’t know where to begin on such a project. But I checked out your website, and it looks like your drama department has some serious talent. If you or your department wanted to make it into a play, I would be thrilled… And for the past year, I’ve worked on adapting Kevin’s story into a stage production. I’ve enlisted the help of Amy Pugh Patel, a former student of mine who is also a drama director- and best friends with Melissa Thomason. We have decided to sponsor Huntsville Hospital’s St. Jude’s clinic and raise awareness of childhood cancer in our community. The HHS Thespian Troup #2936 has chosen childhood cancer as their philanthropy this year and will adopt kids at St. Jude’s in Huntsville as “angels” for Christmas. My friend’s son, ten year old Evan Thomason, passed away on September 22 after a five year battle with cancer. I am dedicating this script to him with lost of love – and pride in a warrior who faced a giant with bravery and courage. Over 90 students auditioned for The Paper Bag Christmas a couple of weeks ago. We have cast 43 students, many of these are first timers to the stage. I am thrilled with their passion, their talent and their willingness to share in this project We will run the show Thursday, December 1 and Friday, December 2 @ 7:30 pm. (Friday we will host Kevin Milne and his wife as they fly in from Portland to join us. At 6:30 pm we will have a dessert and coffee “meet –n- greet” with Kevin) and Sunday, December 4 @ 2:00 pm. There will be no Saturday show (it’s the SEC championship for Heaven sake!) Tickets are $8 for students/seniors/military; $10 adults. The dessert and coffee ‘meet –n-greet” is $15 and includes the show. I hope the Huntsville High School community will embrace this production as a way of starting the holiday celebrations with the true meaning of the season.
