Welcome to the 2013-2014 Academic School Year! We are thrilled that you are a part of our community of Parents, Students, Teachers and All Administration that work to make Huntsville High the best it can be. The overall purpose of PTSA is to make every child’s potential a reality by engaging families and communities We advocate for ALL children. At HHS, we are a PTSA, with the “S” standing for “STUDENT”. At the high school level, students take a more active leadership role in contributing to the school, and we, as a PTSA, are able to help develop that potential. It is very, very fulfilling to see these kids grow in their abilities over the four years they are at HHS! At the Registration assemblies in August, the most repeated message from faculty AND students was for kids to “Get Involved”. With Something. Anything. They know that being involved leads to a higher rate of success. And, as parents, we all want our children to succeed. I encourage all parents to “Get Involved” with Something, Anything that supports your child, their school, their academics, their activities, their social life, their interests. Let them know you are still there for them! I hope you will join the PTSA if you have not already. This Newsletter is just one of the many services we provide for the HHS community and in it, you will find many ways to Get Involved. If there are questions we can help you with regarding Huntsville High, PTSA, or ways to support our school, please do not hesitate to contact us. Together, we make a great team! Have a wonderful year and Go Big Red! Warm Regards, Amy Harbarger, PTSA President harbargd@bellsouth.net

“Believe, Dream, Inspire” Reflections 2013-2014 The National PTA Reflections Program is one of the largest student arts recognition programs in the country. This year, students are invited to interpret “Believe, Dream, Inspire” theme. The categories are dance choreography, film, literature, musical composition, photography, special artist, and visual arts. A $500 scholarship will be awarded to one Alabama senior. The Huntsville High School deadline is Thursday, November 7. Forms and information are available in an orange 3-ring binder on the HHS guidance counter or download from the HHS website under PTSA-Forms - http://www.huntsvillehigh.org/?PageName=%27OrganizationPage %27&OrganizationID=%2724949%27 . An orange crate is also on the counter to receive entries. Contact Beverly Ellison, 533-3411, kandbellison@gmail.com, for questions. Huntsville High has done well with Reflections in recent years. Last year, we had 6 entries, all city winners, with 1 state winner and 1 competing at the national level. The entries included one film production, one literature, one music, two photography, and one visual arts. Max Moseley, HHS’ literature winner, also received the $500 Yvonne Balentine scholarship, which is a companion to Reflections. All six HHS students were honored at a reception on April 4, 2013, at the Huntsville Art League (HAL) on L&N Drive. Our students’ works were featured at the HAL gallery the entire month of April. Many people dropped by to enjoy Huntsville High’s artistry. We are very proud of our Huntsville High School students!

The PTA® Reflections Program is designed to enhance rather than replace a quality arts education. It provides opportunities for students to express themselves and to receive positive recognition for their artistic efforts. It is an annual program for students, preschool through grade 12.

Delta Tri Sigma will be holding its annual fundraiser "The Beauty Walk" on December 5th. This is a new time of year and I hope you will encourage your daughters to be a part of it. This year the proceeds will be given to St Jude's for research for leukemia in Lindsey Wintzinger's name. As many of you know Lindsey, a former HHS volleyball standout, was diagnosed with leukemia right before she was to start her sophomore year at Auburn. This is one way we can support Lindsey in her battle against leukemia and the other young people who will be diagnosed it in the future. We will also sponsor a balloon release at homecoming and donate $100.00 to a charity chosen by the members. Delta Tri Sigma will cook lunch for the new teachers at HHS in Octobe and cook and serve lunch at the Senior Citizen Salvation Army Christmas party on Dec. 19.

Technology Committee

Recently the PTSA Technology Committee helped Mrs. Britton’s multimedia design students purchase a new Nikon DSLR camera. The students in this class will use the camera to gain experience working with RAW images in Photoshop CS6. The class prepares students for the Adobe Certified Associate test, which will be taken in the spring. The test is an industry certification that helps students validate their knowledge in Photoshop and gain working knowledge which translates to employment skills and a great resume addition. Last year was the first time Huntsville High students were able to take the test, thanks to PTSA donations. Through the course, students can prepare for the test and compete in state digital design competitions. They cover the basics of graphic design, color, logos, and photo editing. If you would like more information about Multimedia Design, please contact Kim Britton.

PTSA Student Activities Committee has become PTSA Student Relations Committee ! Over the past few years, HHS PTSA, Administration, Student Council and Faculty and Student Leaders have intentionally worked together to help expand the role of students in PTSA and to support student leadership development. This process has been very rewarding for PTSA and for those working with our outstanding students in all groups. The continued growth of the InterClub Council (ICC) indicates that student groups are taking a more active role in HHS and sharing relevant information with each other. With the Student Relations Committee, PTSA hopes to continue to respond to the current and future needs of HHS students. Your PTSA would like to thank all who have been involved in helping build this great relationship and we are looking forward to another year of working together. Because our work with HHS students has shifted from planning activities for students to developing strong working relationships with student groups, PTSA is better able to understand student concerns and respond to student needs. The committee name has been changed to Student Relations to reflect this relationship. Lisa Miller will serve as Chair of this Committee for the 2013-2014 school year. If you have questions or ideas, please feel free to contact Lisa at lmillerhsv@comcast.net

HCS has worked with senior students to allow them a campus tour in the past. We will continue this process. Please make sure your seniors are aware of the following guidelines. Seniors may have up to one day excused for a college visit. The parent of the senior must make the request in writing on the HHS College Day Form in advance of the visit. The College Day Form is available in the HHS attendance office. The senior must have an appointment with the college he/she is visiting so that the student can obtain necessary documentation to show he/she visited the admissions office. Upon the school receipt of documentation, the absence may be excused. Documentation of the visit must be received by the HHS attendance office within three days of the absence. Students may make up work missed for this excused absence. Students may not be excused on days they are required to participate in state mandated testing. If you have a student who is visiting a campus that will require more than one day of absence, the absence must be approved by the HCS central office prior to the trip. Forward these requests to the principal, and he will seek approval through the HCS Assistant Superintendent. Please allow two weeks for this approval.
