HHS Class of 2013!
Summer 2013
HHS PTSA Newsletter Summer 2013 Principal’s Letter>>> HHS Parents and Students, It has been a busy month! We have had Awards Days, Senior Scholar Night and National Honor Society’s induction ceremony to honor academic achievement. Extra-curricular and co-curricular groups have also had awards programs. Congratulations to all our students who were honored! Prom was a huge success. Thanks to Mr. Moon and the junior class officers for all of their hard work. I also want to thank our students for making it a special occasion. It was a great night and thanks to all involved. Construction on the new parking lot for the Freshmen Academy has started. Parking and traffic flow patterns will change as soon as school is out for the summer. Summer parking will be very limited. Construction on the new building is scheduled to begin June 1st. I will distribute information concerning parking as the project continues over the summer. Congratulations to the graduates in the class of 2013. The class of 2013 has had a great year. It has been a pleasure working with them this year. They will leave behind a legacy of hard work, school spirit and a desire to achieve. I am proud to be their Principal. Thank you for your support during the year. I am amazed at the support from our parents and community. All of us, together, help continue the long tradition of excellence at Huntsville High School. We have a great faculty and staff. They have worked hard this year to provide our students with a quality education. This has been a challenging year and our staff has never wavered in their commitment to our students. Thanks to them for their hard work and dedication. Thank you, Mark Mincher

President’s Letter>>> As our 2012-2013 school year comes to an end, I want to thank you for your service and involvement at HHS and with your PTSA. It has been my honor to serve as your President these past two years. I am thankful for all that we have accomplished together. The young people of Huntsville High School will certainly be a positive force in shaping our future and we look forward to all that they will accomplish. Thank you to all who have served and contributed to PTSA this year! It is not possible to list everything you have done, but we could not help our school without your generosity and the service you have provided. Many thanks to our wonderful PTSA Officers, Committee Chairs, and Board for your hard work. HHS PTSA received several awards again this year. From our local council, the Huntsville Council of PTAs, HHS PTSA received the following Family-School Partnership awards: Communicating Effectively, Collaborating with the Community, and Speaking Up for Every Child. From the Alabama PTA, we received awards for Communicating Effectively and Collaborating with the Community. We also received the following state membership awards: Largest Membership Award and ‘Big Topper’. Thank you to our Awards Committee and Nancy Farris, Chair, for sharing our accomplishments, and thank you to all the Committees who made these awards possible. In addition to the outstanding work from all Committees, thanks go to PTSA Student Activities Committee and Karen Kimbrough as Chair, for another successful year of the Inter Club Council (ICC). The ICC continues to work to increase communication among the clubs and school organizations. Students will take over the leadership of this group beginning next year and PTSA Student Activities Committee will focus more upon Student Relations. Many thanks to the excellent existing and rising student leadership; we have so enjoyed working with you this year! PTSA would also like to thank the award-winning Panther Pause for creating a compelling health and safety video for our students and community. HHS Summer Workshops are back again by popular demand—watch for a new location due to the construction of the 9th Grade Academy. These workshops provide great opportunities to help your students prepare for next year’s classes as well as improve study and test-taking skills. In this year of many changes, special thanks to our teachers, counselors, support staff and administrators for your excellent work! From HHS PTSA, I offer congratulations and wishes for all the best to the Class of 2013 and their families! We will hold you in our thoughts as you move beyond HHS and continue to make your contributions to our community and our world. May you enjoy happiness and much success always. Heartfelt thanks this year to our Principal, Mr. Mark Mincher. Thank you for your excellence, dedication and devotion to HHS and for your leadership this year and in the years to come. The HHS family appreciates your willingness to communicate all that is going on at HHS, with the upcoming construction project and in our city schools. Remember that we need your talents and service to keep HHS PTSA strong, so please consider working with PTSA in the coming year. Please use your Publix cards over the summer and have a safe and happy break!
With Gratitude, Lisa Miller President, HHS PTSA

Reflections after 19 Years>> Today I attended my last PTA meeting. This does not sound like a big deal but I've been attending PTA meetings for 19 years. At dinner tonight my family asked if I cried. I didn't but I was sentimental. Our time is valuable. My time working with the Huntsville city PTAs has been time well spent. At HHS we have a PTSA. We have tried to bring together parents, teachers and students of Huntsville High school to encourage communication and a healthy culture. This did not happen overnight. It took time. I encourage readers of this newsletter to become involved in PTSA. Most parents don't know how or where to start. The new PTSA board is listed in this publication. Committees will be for forming this summer. Contact any of the board members or committee chairs. Ask how you can help. Even if you can give a little of your time, you will make a difference. I promise your lives will be enriched by serving alongside the parents, teachers, and students of Huntsville High school. I treasure the time I spent volunteering with this great group of people. All the best for a bright future at Huntsville high school, Karen Kimbrough

Huntsville High Summer Workshops>> Huntsville High Summer Workshops will be held again this summer, location TBA...look for information coming soon. Postcards will be mailed out in June and workshops will be held at the end of July and first weeks of August. Workshops include English Advanced 9, Math Classes (Geometry, Algebra 1 and 2), Study Strategies, Mastering the ACT/SAT, Mastering the Graphing Calculator, Test Taking Skills and Historical Writing. Registration>>
Are you willing to help with registration for the 2013-14 school year this August? Several volunteers are needed each year during registration to collect and organize paperwork from students over the course of a few hours. Registration will likely take place sometime between August 1315 in the HHS cafeteria (dates are not confirmed at this time). Please email eveyrouse@comcast.net if you are willing to help. Your time will be greatly appreciated.
interClub Council>>
The interClub council held its final meeting of the school year. Since students have different lunches, we have the same monthly meeting during all 3 lunches. At the final meeting in April the theme was "Bring an Underclassman to ICC." Those seniors who brought an underclassman to the meeting were given an opportunity to register for door prizes. Door prizes were gas cards, food and smoothie cards, travel coffee mugs, Starbucks cards and nail salon cards. We had Chick fil a sandwiches rather than our regular pizza lunch. It was productive and FUN. The underclassmen learned a great deal about HHS, especially the freshmen that attended. Many did not know about some of the traditional activities at Huntsville high like Prom Promise. Hopefully the underclassmen that attended will be the future members and student leaders of ICC. Since they don't have a designated period committed to their office, I hope that the sophomore and freshmen class officers will utilize ICC to be a way of meeting and motivating their class to become involved in the activities at HHS. Next year ICC will fall under the umbrella of student council with continued support and partnership of the HHS PTSA.
Ballard’s Brags>> Key Club Officers and Mrs. Ballard will be attending The Key Club International Convention in Washington, DC. Allie Brockman is the Lt. Governor for District 1. She will be representing North Alabama for the year 2013-14. Beta Sigma Upsilon will start on a new journey for 2013-2014 school year. All of our members are graduating this year. Hats off to these young ladies.
HHS Clinic>> I would first like to thank all of the supportive parents and staff for making the transition into high school smoother than expected. I am already making plans and looking forward to next year. Meeting your student's needs is a team effort and I am proud to be a part of HHS's winning team. I would also like to remind parents that all medication in the clinic needs to be signed out by a parent on or before the last day of school, May 23. All medications left after that date regardless of the type of medication will be destroyed per HCS's policy.

PTSA Technology Committee>> This semester the Huntsville High School PTSA Technology Committee purchased a new computer, monitor, and printer for the HHS Red and Blue Newspaper. Ms. Schwartz worked closely with the committee to make sure students next year would have the equipment necessary to continue their work with the Red and Blue Newspaper. Huntsville City Schools worked hard, this semester, to replace and install Promethean Hardware (Active Boards) in all core classrooms. HCS created a district-wide installation strategy; collaborating with procurement, operations, finance, school administrators, and teachers to determine where Promethean Hardware and installation were needed. Core classroom needs were met this semester and plans were made to address the needs of other classrooms next year. More than 148 Active boards were purchased and installed throughout the city. This has been a welcome relief to the Technology Committee. As the city provides the required technology for our classrooms, the Technology Committee can focus funds on the special needs of HHS teachers and students. The PTSA Technology Committee is looking forward to another exciting year, as new technology is constantly unfolding. If you have new technology ideas or are interested in helping the committee, please email us at ssssolomon@comcast.net. Steve & Susan Solomon

The PTA® Reflections Program is designed to enhance rather than replace a quality arts education. It provides opportunities for students to express themselves and to receive positive recognition for their artistic efforts. It is an annual program where students in preschool through grade 12 create and submit works of art in six areas: dance choreography, film production, literature, musical composition, photography, and the visual arts. This year a special artists category was added.
Next year’s theme is “Believe, Dream, Inspire,” so please get started this summer. Contact Beverly Ellison, 533-3411, kandbellison@gmail.com, for questions or rules. 6
HHS Academic Team>>
Spanish Club>>
The Academic Team at Huntsville High has had a very successful year. Lead by our senior MVP's, Bailey Brotherton, Max Moseley, and Reed Miller the team captured the city championship, was a runner up in an elite meet tournament at Hoover High School, placed in the top 8 teams at the state tournament, and will compete in a National Academic Quiz Tournament in Atlanta over the Memorial Day Weekend. Other varsity team members include Hudson Morris, Kyle Munroe, and Drew Pendergrass. Our first ever JV team participated at the district level and also advanced to the state tournament. Team captain was John Collin Powell, MVP for the JV team was Chris O'Neil. The traveling team was celebrated at an April School Board meeting. The team enjoyed a "fiesta" celebration at the end of the year to acknowledge their accomplishments. Special thanks to the Kiwanis Club of Huntsville, Academic Booster Club, and PTSA for their financial commitments on behalf of the program. The support of family and friends has made this a very memorable year.
On March 15, 30 HHS Spanish Club members accompanied Profesora Mucci and Maestro Robinson to the annual convention of the Alabama Federation of High School Spanish Clubs. HHS brought back trophies in Grammar and Usage, 3-D Art, and Singing Group.
Thank you, Ron Bean and MaryAnn Moon, Coaches

HHS Robotics Team- Monkey Madness>> We are so proud to announce that Monkey Madness, a robotics team from Huntsville, Alabama, won the FTC (FIRST Tech Challenge) World Championship Competition April 27, 2013 in Saint Louis, MO. Of the 2,500 teams worldwide that competed in FTC, only 128 teams from 35 states and 17 countries qualified to compete at the World Championship by winning state or national competitions. The competition included teams from Australia, Bulgaria, Canada, China, India, Italy, Jamaica, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Romania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Spain, South Korea, Taiwan, and the United States. Monkey Madness competed in highly competitive matches and ended up the World Champions along with their two alliance partners, Cougar Robotics from Ohio and Fish in a Boat from Minnesota. The team is comprised of seven Huntsville City School students. The six Huntsville High School students are Ben Allen, Summer Berthelson, Matthew Castleberry, Sarah Darrow, Daniel Daugherty and Thomas Kozar and the Hampton Cove Middle School student is Sarah Daugherty. The students have been together as a FTC team for 2 years but some members of the team have been together as long as 5 years on a FLL (FIRST Lego League) team. They have spent over 400 hours this year alone designing, building and programming their robot. For 3 days in St. Louis, Monkey Madness drove their robot in a three-dimensional tic-tac-toe competition. The competition requires skill, strategy and defensive decisions. Their championship victory reflects not only a robust robot design, but also team work and professionalism. For each of their 8 qualifying matches, Monkey Madness was randomly assigned a partner team from among the other competitors. They used good 21st Century communication and strategic thinking skills - especially when their partner teams spoke very little English. Each match lasted only 2 1/2 minutes, so the teams had to think on their feet and work together effectively. Furthermore, Monkey Madness has spent numerous hours giving back to their community by promoting STEM and encouraging an interest in robotics. They have mentored a local 4H FTC team and taught programming classes to FLL coaches. They have demonstrated their robot at the HCS STEM Expo, the Sparkman House Boys & Girls Club, Operation Christmas Bear, and the US Space and Rocket Center Curiosity Mars Landing where they allowed children to interact with their robot. The team also hosted both FTC & FLL qualifiers in an effort to grow FTC in our local area and the state of Alabama. Finally, they enjoyed being camp counselors for the Society of Black Engineers robotics summer camp where they not only worked with children to encourage an interest in science and robotics but learned a lot themselves from the engineering professionals who came to speak each day. We think this win is not only an accomplishment for the team but a great reflection on the caliber of children coming from the Huntsville City School system, the City of Huntsville, and the State of Alabama. Terry Griffin, President of AUVSI Pathfinder Chapter said, “I do not seek recognition for Pathfinder AUVSI; I seek recognition for this robotics team [Monkey Madness] and what its achievement means to our community. If anybody were to have doubt about the quality of our education system and advancement of technology in North Alabama, refer them to this event [FIRST Tech Challenge World Championship]. For more information on FIRST Tech Challenge, please visit usfirst.org. Sincerely, Kim Daugherty Coach Monkey Madness President North Alabama Robotics
Team members are Ben Allen, Summer Berthleson, Matthew Castleberry, Sarah Darrow, Daniel Daugherty, Sarah Daugherty, and Thomas Kozar. Good luck Monkey Madness!
