Art & Community Clubs are a great opportunity to learn more about your favorite art medium as well as develop friendships and a sense of community. Once you are a member of Cedarhurst you can participate in our clubs and affinity groups for no additional membership fee. Club meetings are at Shrode Art Center unless otherwise noted. Please explain why you wish to receive a scholarship on one page or less and return it with your completed class registration form. There are no refunds on class fees unless the class has been cancelled. Refunds will be made if a replacement can be found to fill your place in the class or you provide a replacement.

Classes of the Shrode Art Center are designed for and open to beginning students unless otherwise stated. High school students may enroll in adult classes. Friends of Cedarhurst receive a 20% discount on Spring class fees. (Excludes Specialty Workshops) Some classes are limited in number of students; registrations taken in order received with payment. Deadlines are set to allow instructors time to get materials ordered/prepared for beginning of class. ISBE C.EU. credits available.

Bring your favorite beverage and paint a picture with Debbie Wilson as she shows you step-by-step how to paint a beautiful masterpiece that you can take home that evening! This fun-spirited adult atmosphere is a great way to spend an evening being creative. Students will learn the basics of watercolor and mixed media. Drawing is not required, outlines are available if you wish to use. All supplies will be provided. Introduction to Woodcarving Saturday, April 1

Time: 10:30 am to 1:30 pm Instructor: Dave Gulley Class Fee: $25 Material Fee: $10 (includes wood blank and use of instructor’s carving tools.) Beginning and intermediate students will learn how to do a relief carving of dogwood flowers in bass wood. The instructor will also discuss ideas about carving tools and basic carving techniques. Students should plan to bring a sack lunch. 4


Take Better Photos! Saturday, June 3, 10:30 am - 4:30 pm Sunday, June 4, 1:30 pm - 4:30 pm

Instructor: David Hammond Class fee: $75 | Cedarhurst Members take 20% OFF! Enjoy the beautiful grounds at Cedarhurst photographing sculpture, architecture, and nature with professional photographer David Hammond. Bring your own camera and learn how to approach different subject matter using the tools you own. Photography tips on creating successful compositions, ‘rule of thirds’, and exceptions to ‘the rule’, will all be covered. Students will be given a “photo challenge” to complete in the sculpture park which they will share and discuss with the class. Framing, matting and presenting images in a professional manner will be addressed. This weekend workshop will have something to offer all skill levels, beginning to advanced.

Clay Masks! FAMILY CLAY WORKSHOP

Saturday, April 1 Time: 1:30 pm - 4:30 pm Instructor: Carrie Gibbs Class fee: $25 per participant (children 4-12 years old: $10 each) Creating decorative masks out of clay is a fun and unique way to learn the basics in clay. Learn the foundational clay techniques (slab, pinch and coil) while forming a human or animal-like face. The workshop fee includes clay, glazes and kiln firings. Finished pieces will be ready for pick-up two weeks after class. Additional materials such as yarn, beads and raffia, can be added after the piece is fired to create hair, beards, jewelry, etc.


Saturday, April 8 Time: 10:30 am - 2:30 pm Instructor: Eric Gockel Class fee: $75 | Cedarhurst Members take 20% OFF! (materials included) Beginning to intermediate students welcome! Learn how to cut sheets of glass into smaller shapes to create unique and original designs. The basics of glass fusing, project design, melting properties, and kiln firing methods will be discussed. More experienced students will be guided on an individual basis. Finished glass projects will be ready to pick-up two weeks after the workshop.

Polymer Clay Beaded Necklace Meets 3 Tuesdays: April 18, April 25, May 2 Time: 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm Instructor: David Mason Class fee: $35 Material fee: $10 (pay to instructor day of workshop). Learn how to create colorful beads with polymer clay to use in the design of a necklace. Marbleizing, Jelly Roll and Mirror-image are a few of the techniques that will be taught. The clay beads will be fired during class (275 degrees for approx. 20 minutes) which allows the beads to maintain their desired shape after modeling. The students will then learn how to drill a hole through the beads to create space for the cord in the necklace they design. 6


Stained Glass Meets 6 Mondays: April 3 – May 8 Time: 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm Instructor: David Mason Class Fee: $85 | Cedarhurst Members take 20% OFF! Beginning to advanced students will learn the copper foil method of stained glass to create beautiful stained glass panels (approx. 12”x12”). Patterns will be available for students or they can design their own. Tool kit available for beginning students - $50. Supplies available for purchase from instructor as needed for more experienced students. Advanced students will be guided on an individual basis focusing on more complex windows or lampshades.

Mosaic Glass Workshop Friday, May 5 Time: 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm Instructor: David Mason Class fee: $25 Cedarhurst Members take 20% OFF! Materials fee: $5 (pay to instructor day of workshop) Students will learn how to cut sheets of glass into small pieces and adhere them to a clear glass panel in a beautiful pattern or picture. Pieces will be finished with grout and ready to take home that evening.

Quilt Tote Basket:

Saturday, March 25 This large tote basket measures 17” x 8” x 12” tall and is designed to hold a full size quilt.

Tomato Harvesting Basket: Saturday, April 29 This large round basket has side handles and is great for storage and gathering. The base is 10” in diameter and 12” tall.

Garden Pole Basket:

Saturday, May 20 A unique design great for gathering in the garden or outdoor work. The basket is attached to a long wooden pole that is sharpened on one end so it can be stuck in the ground. It is then ready to hold the things you collect. (If a student does not complete their basket by the end of the day Saturday they can return on a Thursday evening “Basketeer Club Meeting” to work individually with the instructor to complete their project.) *Basket Workshop Work Kit: It is helpful for students to bring dozen clip clothespins, towel, small plastic washtub, pencil and scissors. 8

private lessons are $45 per hour due to material costs. Private art lessons are offered at Shrode Art Center for those who prefer working one-on-one and to help accommodate your busy schedule. Lessons can be tailored to your specific area of interest and allows a beginner or more advanced artist to develop the skills and techniques they want to hone and perfect. Private Lesson Refund Policy: There are no refunds on private lessons. Lessons can be rescheduled with no charge if you contact the Shrode Art Center one week prior to the originally scheduled date.

Oil Painting Saturday, May 13 • Time: 9:00 am - 3:00 pm Instructor: Wheat Jackson Class fee: $75 | Cedarhurst Members take 20% OFF! (includes all materials) Beginning and intermediate students will learn how to paint wet-on-wet style while mimicking the instructor’s finished painting. Techniques and helpful tips will be shared, including how to paint light reflections in glass objects. Students should plan to bring a sack lunch.

Introduction to Printmaking Meets 3 Tuesdays: March 28 – April 11 Time: 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm Instructor: Jessica McDermott Class fee: $60 | Cedarhurst Members take 20% OFF! (includes all printing materials and paper) Come learn the basics of linoleum block Printmaking and how to create beautiful images in black and white as well as full color. Carving techniques will be demonstrated and discussions on creating an interesting composition will be covered. Students will have time to create multiple prints during class and experiment with new techniques. More experienced students may be guided on an individual basis.

Quilting 101 2 Thursday evenings: April 13 & 20

Time: 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm Instructor: Doris Troutt Class fee: $40 Materials fee: $15 (pay to instructor day of workshop) Let’s start at the very beginning with Quilting 101! Students will learn how to cut fabric and sew basic quilt blocks. We will learn how to create half square triangles and the flying geese block among others. The second evening students will learn how to trim and assemble their quilt blocks. The instructor will provide all fabric for students. An additional supply list can be found on our website or will be given upon registration. Students will need to bring their sewing machines.

Dynamic Charcoal Drawing Saturday, May 6

Time: 10:30 am - 3:30 pm Instructor: Dr. Michael Faris Class fee: $30 (all materials included- paper, charcoal, etc.) This is an introductory class in the use of charcoal to create dynamic drawings of tools (pliers, wrench, hammer, etc.) Artist/Educator Dr. Michael Faris will share with students how to use various types of charcoal, erasers, and composition techniques that will aid in the creation of a successful 15”x 20” drawing. Each student will need to bring a tool to draw. All other materials will be provided by the instructor, students should bring a sack lunch.


Wet-Felting a Floral Scarf Saturday, March 25

Time: 10:30 am - 2:30 pm Instructor: Andrea LeBeau Class fee: $75 (all materials included) In this one day workshop students will learn how to create a beautiful floral patterned scarf with wool and silk. This unique Nuno technique is similar to painting with wool on silk and is LeBeau’s signature process. All fiber and materials will be provided by the instructor. Please bring your own sewing kits (needle, thread, scissors, etc.) and a sack lunch. Tie-Dye Workshop Sunday, April 2

Time: 1:30 pm - 4:30 pm Instructor: Carrie Gibbs Class fee: $20 (includes all materials) Tie-dye is a way of creating patterns of color by folding, tying, stitching, crumpling or otherwise preparing the fabric to inhibit the flow of the dye into the folds of the fabric. Surprise in the unfolding is part of what makes tie-dye an exciting and interesting art form for children, adults, friends and family. Wear old clothes and shoes since the dye we are working with is permanent. Each student can bring two T-shirts and one additional item, i.e. pair of socks, baby onesie, bandanna, etc.
