Cedar Park Neighbors Newsletter President’s Message: Come Out, Come Out, Wherever You Are! By Monica Allison, CPN President is a time of rejuvenation and Sbeginpring renewal. It’s the time when we can all to come out of our homes, our coats, our boots and our cars. This year is no different. As the flowers and trees begin to bloom, so does our community. April will be a busy month in our park: April 9th, Go West Craft Fest; April 10th, Scholarship Fundraiser; April 16th, Love your Park; April 25th is the election for Cedar Park Neighbors Board of Directors; and April 30th, Tree Planting in and around Cedar Park. May will bring the start of our Jazz season. Our first Jazz concert will be on Friday, May 27th, with Dr. Ketchup, who is always amazing. We will be bringing back the gardening workshops, family play days, park cleanups and planting days, and August 6th will be the centennial celebration of our park. This day will be full of activities for young and old, culminating in a Jazz concert to cap off the day. Last year, Cedar Park Neighbors (CPN) embarked on a conversation regarding Baltimore Avenue. The warmer weather will allow us to bring together neighbors who are interested into work groups to begin discussing next steps. If you have not reviewed the design study, you can do so on our website. Do you know someone who has lived in our neighborhood for years? Someone who has contributed to the quality of life in our community? Would you like to thank a good neighbor on your block that has done something special? Is there a neighbor you want to honor, living or

Introducing the Nominees for CPN Executive Officers and Board of Directors Nominees for CPN Executive Officers President

Second Vice President

Monica Allison, 4900 block, Catharine Street

Naomi Fiordimondo, 5000 block, Catharine Street

I am running for my final term as President of Cedar Park Neighbors. This is my 15th year of residency in the Cedar Park community. My focus this year will be getting feedback and working toward next steps from our Baltimore Ave Conversation which took place throughout 2010; maintaining the renovated Cedar Park; and becoming more of a community liaison with other organizations in our area. This past year as President has been busy and challenging. In the coming year, I will continue working toward a cohesive vision with neighbors regarding the Baltimore Avenue corridor. I will also continue working with other community organizations to create a network where information is disseminated more easily throughout West Philadelphia. Additionally, Cedar Park Neighbors is celebrating its golden anniversary this year and Cedar Park itself will celebrate its centennial in 2011, and I am looking forward to both celebrations during my tenure as president for 2011-12.

I have lived in West Philly for more than a dozen years. Since 2005, I have been an active block captain for the 5000 block of Catharine Street, where I organize clean-ups, host regular meetings and block gatherings, help neighbors in need, encourage Junior Block Captains to get involved, get street signs replaced, organize neighbor-volunteers to maintain and upgrade abandoned and neglected properties, facilitate tree planting and welcome new neighbors. I have served on the CPN Board since 2008 and recently as the First Vice President. I am currently sitting on CPN’s Communications Committee and am active on a number of other neighborhood projects. My husband and I are slowly renovating and repairing the home we share with our three rescue cats and hope to adopt an infant soon.

First Vice President

Michael Froelich, 500 Block, S. 48th Street I moved to Cedar Park in 2008 from Walnut Hill. Originally, I lived in West Philadelphia during the 1990’s, but was restless and moved to the West Coast for almost a decade before realizing what I had given up and moved back. I am a legal aid lawyer at Community Legal Services, co-founder of the West Philly Tool Library and currently sit on the boards of UC Green and Shakespeare in Clark Park. My partner, Susanna, and I are the proud parents of Zora, our two-year-old joyful spitfire of a daughter. I enjoy living in Cedar Park because of the wonderful community of friends that I have made, friends that live just down the block or around the corner. I look forward to continuing to serve on the board in order to promote business and civic activity that helps grow these neighborhood relations.

Secretary

Dorothy Welch Berlind, 500 block, S. 48th Street I have served as the Board’s Secretary for the past several years and will serve another if that is the wish of the membership. I have also served as the Board’s representative on the University City District’s Board of Directors. I am a thirty-six year resident of Cedar Park, recently retired from the University of Pennsylvania. I am originally from New Hampshire and was educated at Barnard College in New York City and at the University of Pennsylvania. I have a grown-up son who is living and working in San Francisco. I find CPN a wonderful and effective organization, and have been happy to be involved. Treasurer

Karen Allen, 4700 block, Warrington Avenue I believe that in order for a community to be viable, its residents must play an active role in the life of that community. I have been active in Cedar Park Neighbors and in the larger University City since moving to the neighborhood in 1982. In addition to my duties as CPN Treasurer, I have worked on the CPN Budget, Zoning, and Bylaws Committees. CPN is currently spearheading many worthwhile projects, such as the Baltimore Avenue Conversation and our continuing efforts in the beautification and reuse of Cedar Park. I’m happy to have had the opportunity to serve on the CPN Board, and I look forward to continuing these and other efforts during the coming year.

Nominees for CPN Board of Directors Algernong Allen, 4800 block, Trinity Place I am the owner/operator of Elena’s Soul Lounge at 4912 Baltimore Avenue, a soul food bar and lounge featuring live entertainment, as well as a real estate investor, and licensed real estate agent with Exit Benchmark Realty. My roots are in Southwest Philadelphia, and I once lived at 49th and Walton Avenue. My wife and I recently bought a home on the 4800 block of Trinity Place and are looking forward to becoming a part of the community as residents with our newborn daughter, Ailey Lynn. I am currently a member of the CPN Board, handled the production and booking of the 2010 Jazz in the Park Series, and participate on the Property Housing Task Force. As a member of the Business community, I am on the Board of the Baltimore Avenue Business Association (BABA) which facilitates communication and planning between businesses along the Avenue. I am also a member of the University City District (UCD) Main Street Promotions Committee, which is responsible for Baltimore Avenue Promotions such as the Dollar Stroll. As a resident, commercial operator, and landlord in Cedar Park, I am particularly interested in the holistic growth and development of the neighborhood in terms of value, vibrancy and quality of life for residents. I feel that balance and representation of the diverse elements of the community should be represented with a respect for history, but a progressive direction toward improvement, inclusive of the best elements of all neighbors, old and new. I would love the opportunity to continue to have a voice in guiding the direction of Cedar Park Neighbors.

Danielle Denk, 500 block, S. 48th Street I would like to continue on the CPN Board to continue to serve our community. As an architect, I bring an understanding of the development of our community from a streetcar suburb to a sustainable urban neighborhood. I feel we are in a period of re-investment, not re-development, and that the challenges presented with this investment take careful consideration of our urban fabric. As a landscape architect, I bring an understanding of our urban landscape. From the dynamic of the Baltimore Avenue Corridor to the nodes created by our triangle parks there exists a vital pedestrian quality which make our neighborhood desirable. Our connection to Center City via rail is a tremendous asset in this day of car culture and makes Cedar Park a sustainable urban enclave. I am co-founder of a group of neighbors working in collaboration to advocate

for a more sustainable West Philadelphia: The West Philadelphia Urban Living Studio. Our current project seeks to establish a trail on the West Shore of the Schuylkill River, with a trail head at Clark Park. Most important, as a mother, I bring my perspective on early childhood education. I believe that access to quality education in our community is the single greatest challenge we face. For this reason, I collaborated with other parents to establish the West Philadelphia Cooperative School. We are a progressive, parent run cooperative preschool serving the neighborhood and have dreams to expand our preschool into a primary school. I share my passion for quality education by Cochairing our Education Committee. We recently began a series of events called “CPN Education Nights” to bring neighbors and educators together to discuss education opportunities in our community.

Sean Dorn, 5000 block, Catharine Street I have lived in Cedar Park since 2000 and live on Catharine Street with my wife, Emily, and our daughter Nora. My wife and I own VIX Emporium at 50th and Baltimore. VIX, besides featuring handmade gifts by local residents, is a co-sponsor of the GO WEST craft fairs at 50th and Baltimore. I am an advocate for a diverse and active commercial corridor on Baltimore Avenue and recently narrated a video for Philadelphia Weekly showcasing some of the fun stuff to do along Baltimore Avenue. I recently served as Second Vice President and helped design and re-launch CPN’s website on a more interactive, user-driven model and also participate on CPN’s Property Housing Task Force.

Meg Ferrigno, 5000 block, Cedar Avenue I have been living and working in community schools in West Philadelphia for the last twoand-one-half years. I moved into the Cedar Park neighborhood in 2009 and began attending visioning meetings for our neighborhood. I have fallen in love with the area and recently purchased a home here and am looking forward to creating a center for non-violence. I am involved at Lea, Huey, Drew and Ucity schools as a Penn employee. As a board member, I would work to establish more gardens on the empty lots to encourage healthy eating, outdoor activity, and general community well-being and beautification. I have been inspired by our visioning as a community and am happy to dedicate my time and energy toward accomplishing our goals. continued on page 6 April 2011

Nominees for CPN Board of Directors, continued from page 5 Laurie Friedman, 4900 block, Larchwood Avenue I have been a resident of Cedar Park since 2006. Since then, I have been involved with the Cedar Park Neighbors Scholarship Committee, helping to raise money and support the youth who are recipients of the scholarship, and later joined the board in 2008. I grew up in the suburban sprawl of Miami, Florida and deeply appreciate the community I have found in Philadelphia. My other passions lie in helping to clean up the neighborhood and supporting one other. Professionally, I am social worker who provides therapy to at risk youth in Southwest Philadelphia and teaches social work at Temple University.

Theresa Manzi, 5000 block, Baltimore Avenue I have served on the Board of Cedar Park Neighbors representing Philadelphia Federal Credit Union since 2008. It has been a very positive experience for me to get to know the community that our branch serves. I also think my board presence has further entwined the partnership between PFCU and CPN. PFCU has proudly been serving the West Philadelphia community since 1988. In addition to CPN, I currently serve on the Young Partners Board for the Community Partnership School in North Philadelphia. Both organizations have been an outlet for me to work in a field I am truly passionate about, education. PFCU is also a big proponent of education as seen in its annual support of the CPN Scholarship Program and the constant commitment to promoting financial literacy to members and the community. It has been my pleasure to be part of the Board for the past three years. I would welcome the opportunity to continue to serve for an additional term.

Laura Raymond, 5000 block, Hazel Avenue I have lived in Cedar Park since 2003. I am an architectural designer with a specialty in sustainable design and energy conservation. My engagement with Cedar Park Neighbors began through the Community Design Collaborative during which I and colleagues worked with CPN on the initial design of the newly renovated Cedar Park. The design was then taken by CPN to the city for funding and final design development. The Cedar Park project was recognized by the Community Design Collaborative as a community success story and in the book edited by John Cary, “The Power of Pro Bono – 40 Stories About Design for the Public Good by Architects and Their Clients.” Currently my business partner, Page 6

CPN Newsletter

Dan Garofalo, and I are building a new singlefamily home in Cedar Park on the 5000 block of Hazel Avenue. Our decision to build in this area comes directly from a love of its spirit and beauty, and a desire to invest locally in our community. Our home represents modern design and function in the context of historic West Philadelphia row homes. We anticipate its completion any day now. My investment in West Philadelphia, specifically the Cedar Park community, represents my intent on supporting Cedar Park in its continuing development of good housing and retail and corridor development, while retaining the spirit and diversity of generations that have made Cedar Park so rich.

Courtney Walton, 4900 block, Walton Avenue I was born in Philadelphia and grew up in West Philadelphia where I attended area public schools until junior high school upon which I attended the Scotland School for Veterans’ Children. I later attended Peirce College, earning a degree in the area Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting and then attended the University of Phoenix where I earned a Masters degree in Business Administration in 2007. My professional career includes four years of accounting in the medical field and almost 9 years of accounting and finance for the City of Philadelphia. In my spare time I operate an online business geared toward natural hair and skin care to help promote a more natural, chemical-free lifestyle. Outside of professional interests, I enjoy traveling, playing volleyball, crocheting, and writing. I have lived in the Cedar Park area for 12 years. During that time, I’ve seen the neighborhood grow into a rare jewel of Philadelphia. The people are warm and welcoming, the businesses are personal and friendly and, walking through, you can’t help notice how green and beautiful our neighborhood has become. As a homeowner, raising my daughter in Cedar Park, I have a vested interest in ensuring the continual growth of our neighborhood and helping to develop and maintain a wonderful environment. I believe I can be a viable resource of information and ideas and would love the opportunity to serve my neighborhood as an ambassador of growth and improvement. Note: Those continuing on the CPN Board whose terms have not yet expired are: Michael Clapper, Lisa Johaningsmeier, Sheri McFarland, Jessica Naugle-McAtamney, Ray Murphy, Sara Nissley, Beverly Rouse and Neil Toensmeier.

Central City Toyota Supports Local Fire Victims (adapted from article published in the Philadelphia Inquirer) entral City Toyota and Ardmore C Toyota donated $5,000 to four families displaced by the devastating fire at Windermere Court Apartments in West Philadelphia. During a luncheon at Central City Toyota on February 19, each family received $1,250 from the dealerships. “Our dealership family was very saddened by this tragedy,” said Central City Toyota Service Manager Jamie Haberle. “Many of our employees immediately looked for ways to help.” Max Paul’s Central City Toyota and Ardmore Toyota have been community fixtures for over four decades, and donating to the victims of the Windermere Court fire continues a tradition of the dealerships giving back to their neighbors.

“We are very proud of our employees and Max Paul and family for getting involved in such a wonderful cause for our neighbors,” said Haberle. “We hope our donation encourages others to give, and we want Windermere Court families to know that help is still available from charitable organizations. If you have been affected by the Windermere Court fire, or if you wish to help, contact Dr. Damone B. Jones, Sr., Senior Pastor at Bible Way Baptist Church at 215-477-0778. Pastor Jones is eager to help families who have not received structured assistance. Central City Toyota is a frequent supporter of Cedar Park Neighbors events such as our annual fair and scholarship fundraiser. We appreciate their ongoing support and laud their response to the victims of the Windermere fire.

Make Plans to be Citizens! he Philadelphia City Planning T Commission’s Citizens Planning Institute (CPI) is now accepting applications for the new and expanded Spring 2011 series of classes for aspiring “citizen planners.” The spring series builds on last November’s very successful pilot course. Class size is limited to 30 participants to ensure lively and interactive learning. The application form and class descriptions are available on the website: citizensplanninginstitute.org. Deadline for application is April 8th. All classes will be held at the Community College of Philadelphia’s Center for Business & Industry at 18th and Callowhill Streets, from 6 to 9 p.m., and include a buffet dinner (included in course fees). One half-day Saturday workshop is part of the “Core Course” and will take place at the Planning Commission offices at 16th and Arch Streets. Course material will include practical tools participants can take back to neighborhood organizations to catalyze positive change. Students completing the three sessions of the Core Course and two Electives will receive a Citizen Planner Certificate of Completion in June.

The CPI’s mission is to empower citizens to take a more effective and active role in shaping the future of their neighborhoods and of Philadelphia, through a greater understanding of city planning and the development process. The CPI is the formal outreach and education arm of the Planning Commission and is connected to the overarching goal of the new comprehensive plan for the City — Philadelphia2035 — which provides a blueprint “plan” to move Philadelphia forward over the next 25 years.
