The new color coded student parking arrangements are officially in place with the start of the new school year. With the year fresh upon the students, many are asking questions like, “What will happen if I have late arrival?” and “What if people are aggressively protecting ‘their’ spot?” The new parking system is aimed at packing as many students in the main lot as possible to save time and fill spots that are usually vacant due to absences. With the purchase of a gold pass, students are almost guaranteed a parking spot, due to access to all three parking lots (given time). So at the very least, be smart with your time and keep an open mind to the bustle and you’ll see yourself loving, (well, enjoying) the new system.

ing students what their education means in the long run. In his spare time, Albertson operates the Albertson family ranch that he lives on and devotes his time to the high school and all of the LPOSD staff.

His long standing roots and devotion in the school district, as well as the community prove that Tom Albertson is the best match for the long standing tradition of SHS excellence.

The new district standards proved to be very challenging for the student council in finding a location for the homecoming dance. Because the district holds a requirement that the venue has to be in city limits and hold at least 600 students, the student council has decided to hold the homecoming dance in the SHS Commons. Student Leaders understand that this might not be the most ideal venue, but they are planning to make the best of it. Knowing that the venue is free, student council is planning on spending money on decorations and a DJ. Before the dance there are many festivities such event as dressup week, powderpuff, and the homecoming football game. So don’t forget that homecoming week is on Monday, September 22nd, so mark your calendar!

Caroline Suppiger Junior Lifestyle Editor Summer in Sandpoint brought upon several unpredictable weather occurrences for residents as thunderstorms were more impactful than expected. On July 23 and August 2, Sandpoint was met with two large thunder and lightning storms this summer that left many families without power. Northern Lights Electric reported at the height of the storm on July 23, 12,000 customers were without electricity. For some people, the power outage lasted for over a week. Garfield Bay was one of the hardest hit areas by the storm. Northern Lights counted over 30 broken power poles. It is estimated that the five minutes of heavy storm cost Northern Lights Electric over $1 million. The second storm on August 2, seemed to hit city residents harder than the previous storm. The storm took down trees all over Sandpoint including a tree that fell on and broke the fence around the Sandpoint High School track. In the Lake Pend Oreille School district, Sandpoint High School had the most significant damage. Around the high school approximately 30 trees fell, most being on or around the track and nearby fence. All repairs will be completed by mid September. The track alone will cost $50,000 to repair, most of which is covered by insurance. Within the school district, the roof of a district storage building was damaged along with Farmin Stidwell’s roof and fence. The estimated total cost of the storm is around $73,000, with $65,000 of it being paid by insurance.

Students and staff help ALS research Sadie Nitcy News Editor As buckets of cold, frigid water continue to be poured over both celebrity icons and local Sandpoint High School students alike, the latest summer “trend” has brought a noble cause to the forefront helping fund research for Lou Gehrig’s disease. Many students participated in the ice bucket challenge over the summer. For some, the challenge brought upon new education about the disease, while others were merely reminded. “I already knew what ALS was before I heard about the challenge, because one of my

teammate’s dad has it. It’s a really horrible sickness and I think it’s great that it has been brought to attention to the whole world,” senior Corinne Ariss said. The focus of the challenge is to get people to accept and pass it along to other selected beings with a 24-hour time gap. If they do not accept, the hope is that they will donate to the ALS Association. YouTube, Instagram, Twitter and Facebook have provided the outlets for the challenge’s success. “This gives people all over the awareness of this serious disease, and an opportunity to impact the future. ALS is now known throughout the world,

who does the challenge donates, I still think it is very important to raise awareness. It’s definitely trending and now I can’t think of anyone who hasn’t done it,” Ariss said.

Dolphin Tale 2 Sept. 12 - Rated PG The sequel to Dolphin Tale should hit the theaters with a splash. The team that came together to save the dolphin, Winter, reunites to find Winter a companion to live with. Without seeing the first movie, the sequal looks like an hour and a half of inspirition and an overall uplifting tale. And really, who can resist those cute dolphins? This Is Where I Leave You Sept. 19 - Rated R It’s a Jason Bateman and Tina Fey movie, you can’t go wrong. After his father dies, Bateman’s character, Judd, and his three siblings are grounded for a week to the house they grew up in. This comedy, underneath all of the laughs, highlights the unpredictable aspects of life and accepting the changes that inevitably come.

The Maze Runner Sept. 19 - Rated PG-13 Based on the trailer alone, this movie looks intense. Dylan O’ Brien, yet another reason to see this movie, wakes up not knowing who he is, trapped near a terrifying maze. O’Brien’s character, Thomas, tries to outsmart the maze in a movie looks like a thrill ride of twists and turns at every corner, literally.

q: What was your

favorite aspect/ experience while you were there? a: I enjoyed getting to know the soccer culture because it is so different in Europe. Also, getting to meet different girls from around the U.S. was really amazing. q: Is this something you wish to continue doing in your future? a: Oh yeah. Definitely.

Always take notes; writing things down will help your brain to remember them.

1

Make flashcards! Use them for studying and memorization.

2

Don’t cram. Study in short intervals throughout the week leading up to your test or quiz.

3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10

Keep notes in a binder/notebook; try to avoid loose paper. Spend time on the things you don’t know; try not to stress over what you do know. When you get the test, answer the questions you know first, and then go back to the ones you are stuck on. Use mnemonic devices to help remember things in quirky ways. Don’t study in the same place; your brain will remember more if it is associated with different places. Have someone quiz you, or quiz yourself.

Sleep on it. The brain processes new memories while you sleep, effectively storing the information you just studied.
