THE LAST CHAPTER cedar post senior edition

“Time is a

funny thing,”

ime is a funny thing. Remember the way that you looked at the seniors on the first day of freshman year? They were adults, already grown up with so much figured out. Now, we are those seniors, and I don’t think I speak for just myself when I say that I don’t feel the way I imagined they must have felt. Sometime during my freshman year, I downloaded a countdown app to keep track of how many years, months and days were left in my high school career. It’s surreal to realize that we now are those big seniors to a new pack of nervous freshmen, and that all of that time in between has finally passed. The time that passed between mom jeans being ugly to being cool, or between the first last day of the school year to the last. To me, it seems

to be passing at once infinitely fast and painfully slowly. Maybe it hits you just how fast it goes every now and then. Maybe when you’re watching your friends talk about their futures, or when your mom texts you to check in. Perhaps you feel it when you hear a song you used to love, or when you think about someone you lost. I know I do here and there. And then you blink, and we’re graduating. I don’t have any nostalgic musings to offer about how I really lived in the moment throughout my high school career, or how I’m sad to see it end. More than anything, I’m amazed at the vast amount of moments that have run together to bring us here. To my classmates — we have all the time in the world.

KAYLAUNA FORELL 1ST GENERATION “Applying for scholarships and applications was pretty hard if you don’t know what you are doing, especially when your parents are asking like questions that I didn’t know the answer to. I was pretty influenced by my parents to go to college so I’d say it was pretty important for me too.”

ISAAC BENNETT CULINARY SCHOOL “When I turned fifteen I got my first job in a kitchen not expecting to do anything but dish wash, but then I had the most ambition to grow higher in the restaurant business. I kind of fell in love with cooking.”

CATHERINE BRENNER DUKE IN CHINA “There is an idea out there that says, if the Americans and Chinese can both reach cultural understandings and learn to work together, the whole world will come together due to the enormity of both economies. Opportunities like this don’t come around very often, and I have always wanted to travel and learn about other cultures.”

BRYANNA ELLS AIRFORCE “A lot of my family is in the military so it’s just assumed that if I didn’t go to school I would go into the military. Doing research and looking into especially being a female joining, the airforce seemed the best bet.”

DIDN’T SEE THAT COMING

Things that we didn’t plan on doing in high school but did anyways “So when I cut my hair, at first I was like, ‘I’d never do that’ but then I did it, you know, for the ladies, and they just swooned over me, and they’re just like, ‘oh look at that cutie. Dang, he’s fine’.”

“One thing that I didn’t expect when I was a freshman was becoming a senior so fast, like you look up to the seniors and juniors you had when you were a freshman, and it just seems so… out of reach and unattainable, so it kind of sneaks up on you.”

Alex Christensen

Tanner Kohal

“Back in middle school, I was very antisocial. I definitely admit a lot of people just talk to different people, and I’d say that just meeting with people, talking to them, getting to know them; before middle school I didn’t do that, when here I definitely do that.”

“I guess just coming into high school, thinking I know who I want my friends to be, and then like, people make friends with people that I would’ve totally never seen myself like, being in contact with,I guess. And just kind of expanding my social boundaries.”

Kaitlyn Sawhill

Sierra McNamee “I didn’t think I’d do track, then my junior year I tried that, and I liked it.”

“[I didn’t expect] the homework load. I didn’t expect it to be —I don’t want to say as little— because I think everyone over prepared me if that makes sense. I was expecting to have to write three essays everyday, and I didn’t have to.”

Jarett Mitton

Charlie Wilson

“I guess the only thing that really I didn’t expect was that I found God. I just decided to become a missionary rather than going off and going to college.”

Jacob McKnight

“My freshman year I heard about senioritis, and I didn’t think it was real, but it truly is.”

Micah Curiel

Sacred Spaces

Students give thanks to the places at Sandpoint High School that defined our time here “I love Guthrie’s room behind the middle school. It’s separate from the rest of the high school and it was an awesome environment for me to express myself. I felt like I could zone out or day dream in that room and leave all my worries and problems back in the high school. It was also an awesome place for me to explore art and do crazy things all with Guthrie’s support.”

Allison Kinard Guthrie’s Art Room

“I always feel good when I am in Mrs. Meshcko’s CAD class. She is a fun teacher and it is a good environment for learning as well as she is very accommodating of peoples schedule. I like the class because I have had it all four years of high school and I think that is why I feel safe there; it is familiar.”

Alex Wolff Mrs. Meshcko’s Room

“I can technically say that my safe space is the band room, because that is where I typically hang out or I used to hang out all the time in high school.”

Emily Shevada The Band Room

THE THINGS WE TAKE 17

As we leave onto our next adventure, we will remember our high school lives with the things we take with us KYLE ALMEIDA

MCKENNA BECK “I played club volleyball and I’ve made first team this year, all league since my freshman year. I had to become better at the sport in order to earn those spots on the team and have the trophies is insane to me. I’ll always be thankful for that and the trophies are a reminder of it.”

LAKE WILKS

NOAH HASTINGS

“What reminds me the most of high school is my two State sweatshirts. I met a lot of cool people and also built some of my best friendships through playing a sport.”

This is a photo [that reminds me of high school]. I will keep it close to me because it is all of my boys and I will love them for the rest of my life.

EMMA REED

GARRETT CONNOLLY

HANNAH HURST “I will take a couple of the pieces of art that I have done in Mrs. Guthrie’s class and plan on hanging them in my room in the house that I will pledge to. These pieces will remind me of home and what inspired me to strive toward a major in the art field, architecture.”

“One memorable item that I am taking from high school is my breathing mask that I wear on runs when allergies are really high. This is memorable to me because running has been my passion since I moved here in 2012 and my mask has been to multiple Cross Country and Track meets, and has even been around the world. I hope to keep this mask as long as I can so that I never forget the memories made.”

The item I’ll be taking is my class ring. It’s meaningful to me because it wraps up all the work I’ve done for the past 12 years of school and condenses it into a ring that I can wear as a reminder of not only the highlights but also the obstacles I had to overcome. It’s like I’m accessorizing myself with achievements. I feel like I earned the ring.

“I am bringing my backpack to college because it is very sturdy and it has pins on it that I’ve collected throughout my years in high school.”

JAYDYN ENGEN “I might take my high school senior yearbook to put on my bookshelf in my dorm. It reminds me of all the new and lovely people I made friends with during my short time here. It helps to remind me that while moving on in life may be tough, there are always kind people to share love with.”
